Finding out that buy and large what people mean when they say "it's dangerous to reheat rice!!" is that if rice is held at a tepid temperature for an extended period of time it tends to grow cultures that can cause food poisoning. A fact that is true about pretty much everything.

HOLD UP. It's some creature they know absolutely nothing about beyond that it's probably what has been driving whole planets to madness. It could be toxic upon contact. It could have some hidden defense mechanism that won't trigger until touched. Etc., etc., etc. But Jim Kirk just grabs the unknown thing barehanded? Without a single hesitation? Because it lands on Spock?? True love is real and I am reeling!

Alan Becker Analysis: Hazard's Mysteries (Or Maybe I'm Overthinking???)
Tumblr media
Ok so unlike this last post about Victim and Glasses Guy / "Agent", this isn't really me bringing anything solid onto the table (well besides one or two things). This is just me overanalysing random shit that frankly is likely irrelevant.
Anyways this post is about Bathroom Sign Guy aka Hazard aka Warning aka Sign, the gray pictogram mercenary from Animator vs. Animation VI, and why he might have a deeper role (prob doesn't).
Part 1 - The Overthinking of Minor Details
Ok this is the part where I'm 100% convinced I'm just talking stupid shit due to rewatching the episodes too many times, but eh.
Let's start off with something... relatively normal actually, which I saw pointed out by others. When Chosen attacks the mers with lightning, Hazard has this shit happen to him:
Tumblr media
This is... frankly weird and idk what it means. When Wanted first came out, this and his movement made me think Hazard was a robot, but since then I started believing he's just a normal stick figure like the others. Besides, this whole series is on a computer so everyone besides the Animator is an AI lol.
So if he's not a robot, perhaps Hazard is connected to technology, and thus taking away the ship's energy took away his? That's the only other thing I can think of.
The second one was actually told to me by a friend, and tbh even in this whole post this might be the biggest stretch, but I still think this is worth bringing up. When Orange and Chosen return to the Outernet, Hazard is seen looking... somewhere.
Tumblr media
(btw agent looks so stupid here lmfao)
The most likely answer is that he is simply looking around, like Agent and Primal - the cave drawing - are seen doing like immediately afterwards. But my friend did point out that it could easily look like Hazard is looking up - in which case, he could've possibly noticed Chosen and Orange, and then chose to not tell the other mercenaries until Agent notices them and thus forces Haz to intervene. Likely just huge overthinking of a one-off scene, but still.
The last one from Wanted is this shot of the Mercenaries in the elevator.
Tumblr media
In this scene, Hazard briefly looks at Ballista - the pixel gremlin - and then proceeds to look away when the little guy stares back at him. Is it most likely them just finding the awkward elevator silence uncomfortable? Probably yea, but it could also be a sign of Hazard and Ballista having a rocky relationship - we see Ballista is pretty aggressive, so maybe Hazard is nervous around such a batshit crazy dude?
In "The Box", the first Hazard scene worth talking about is the first of his reactions to Victim's torture of Chosen.
Tumblr media
We know he is a mercenary and a villain, so it should be expected that he's a cruel bastard, but still, falling asleep while watching torture is just another level. What kind of shit did Hazard see, or do himself, that he finds Victim's actions purely boring?
...and yet, just a few moments more later, Hazard has an actual reaction to Victim pulling out a lasso.
Tumblr media
Now, the three dots - and thus, Hazard's silence of a reaction - could mean anything. Maybe he's still bored, just awake now. Maybe he's curious to see what will happen. Maybe he has actual standards. But it's still interesting to see that Victim's lasso got a reaction out of Hazard (meanwhile Ballista just crosses his arms, prob in curiosity or impatience, while Primal stays completely still - I'll get to their personalities later).
Similarly, Victim ordering Agent to clone him also gets a small reaction out of Hazard, his head jumping a little (I don't know how else to call it).
Tumblr media
This time, it's definitely just shock/curiosity/surprise that Vic is doing something new, and/or that the Box lets you clone people, but still worth pointing out.
A long time later, we finally get something worthy of note from Hazard, that I actually find interesting. While the other mercs are too busy looking through Chosen's memories, Hazard notices Orange returning.
Tumblr media
I feel like this was actually an intentional choice. Like, why make all the mercs focused on Chosen's memories, excluding only one of them - and it's not even the most important mercenary that's the big bad's right hand? Also, why is Hazard so far away from the other mercenaries? While I consider this whole section of the post just major overthinking, this one moment specifically is actually pretty sus to me.
Now, to close off this section, there is Haz's reaction to Super Orange.
Tumblr media
Mainly, how he and Victim are the only ones who are inarguably scared/panicking. Primal just leans in like "de fuk", Ballista flinches once and then watches in silence, while Agent double checks on both the small and large monitor. Primal and Agent are confused, Ballista is shocked(? idk how to call it), but Hazard and Vic are the only ones with a true "OH SHIT" reaction. What this means? Idk, again this whole section is just overthinking things.
Thankfully we can leave the part where I talk meaningless shit and get into the parts that hopefully actually have a point.
Part 2 - Hazard and His (Lack of) Personality
Another part I noticed since Wanted first dropped (part of the reason why I first thought Haz was a robot) was that, compared to the other mercs, he has so little personality... which might be intentional.
I mean, Agent. He also doesn't showcase a lot of himself, but we still see that he's cool, calm, loyal to Victim, kind of a taunting asshole who plays with his victims instead of instantly getting serious, and despite it all, not unbreakable - He panicked when Chosen attacked him with the iceberg, and he was caught off-guard by Super Orange like everyone else.
Ballista probably has the most personality out of everyone. His body language shows emotion pretty much all the time: most specifically, anger. Whether it's his fighting style, his pose, or walk cycle, Ballista is pissed off 24/7. It's implied it even makes his co-workers nervous. At the same time, the grin he flashes when jumping off the ship in Wanted shows he enjoys his job.
Primal is second only to Hazard in lack of personality, but there's definitely still something there. Mainly, is that he's a very fight-focused person that is basically an empty shell outside it. He's so ready to fuck up a rhino in Wanted, and sharpens his spear for another hunt while bored, but outside of fighting Orange?... he's pretty dull. Only a bit more emotional than Hazard. He seems like a Kraven-type character who just wants to hunt the biggest prey possible, while having zero life outside it. Also he has a Hulk-style form which reduces him to an animal sapience-wise.
Hazard, though? He uhh... he wants to get Chosen, is very focused on completing the job, and that's kinda it. He's such a blank it feels intentional. Perhaps he has his own goals and is hiding them?
Part 3 - He's Either Holding Back or He's Fucking Useless
Yea not gonna sugarcoat this. There has to be some sort of big reveal of Hazard's true power in later episodes, or this dude's so weak it's laughable to think he's supposed to be a threat.
I mean, Agent has a toolbar that makes him a Mini-Animator, and he can pause anything and anyone. Ballista can shapeshift his body and pull weapons out of his ass. Primal has a stronger form that can pick up a rhino without difficulty, and he probably has more.
Hazard?
Tumblr media
He, uh... is good at dodging. He also has this one Shock Sign that killed a bird. Yeah.
Ngl if this is all Hazard has then it's impossible for me to see him as a threat on par with the other mercs, or even Victim. Hell, I wouldn't even be able to see him as above the Stick Gang in strength, with how slow Orange was in that scene compared to his fights in the AvM Shorts.
So yeah, on top of possibly hiding his true personality/hidden motives, Hazard was most likely holding back heavily in Wanted, which only makes him more mysterious.
Part 4 - The End
So, this is kinda it. Was Part 1 all overthinking, or did I get a few things right? Is Hazard actually hiding something, or does he only show little personality because none of his scenes let him show off anything? Is he holding back his true strength, or is he actually weak?
Frankly idk, but I am excited to see where things go with this guy, as he has tons of potential.

Deliciously fucked up way for Team Prime to find out about the supernatural: Have a fae show up in one of the kid's homes. False Artifact preying on Raf's baby/toddler siblings, a Pooka replacing the pet dog at Miko's, or a Kobold decides Jack's place is nice enough to stay. The kids have a feeling something is up but the bots think it's just nothing.
Until they find an old school packet with info that eeriely matches the signs in their respective home. Miko's Pooka Hunting goes a bit awry so Bulkhead ends up seeing her get chased outside the house by something that definitely isn't a dog. Raf barely got one sibling away from being eaten by a False Artifact. Arcee might've damaged the house to grab Jack as he accidentally spook a Kobold.
Cue concerned bot noises upon seeing the packets. I don't think they like the idea of children eating fae in their charges' homes.
Ahhh, this went in a different direction.
Warning: off-screen character death (age-related and car accident), dubcon/noncon body modifications, and underage drinking
Now the Darby household does have a Kobold. It's been following them (and the lineage) for a very long time. Generation after generation, parent to child as the unspoken agreement is held with family traditions, superstitions, and practices that have been ingrained into family lore.
If there's one thing June absolutely misses about her ex-husband, it's his family. While June hadn't cut ties with her own blood, her own kin (even her own parents) never spent time in one place for too long. They welcomed into their home. Treated her well with food and warmth and taught her their traditions as she married a son of theirs.
It's an unfortunate fact of life that time comes for all. Oma survived years of hardship by war and reconstruction, without her beloved husband, and the deaths of her own dwindling family, she died peacefully in her sleep during a visit to see a toddling Jack. His parents, though...
When the call came that his parents were killed in a massive pile-up on the freeway, their lives came crashing down.
Grief manifests in so many ways. June cherishes what was left behind. She uses the quilts and recipes and leaves out a portion of dinner for the 'spirit of the hearth.' Her husband, however, drowned himself inside the hospital; unable to come home and look at the reminders, refusing to do anything with it.
Their divorce comes and it's... amicable. The man who was once her husband stares back with a frozen heart, shrouded by his own grief, and he offers to leave them the house as well. June declines and searches for warmer shadows.
The house is sold. June and Jack move on, and the Kobold follows them.
June is a Darby child, and her son follows her as well. Memories are cherished by them. (Faithfully. Hungrily.) And June dutifully attends to her once-husband's family's traditions: leaving dusty corners, a few dirty plates in the sink, grease on the stove, and many, little things that keep the home running. He may try to escape them, but she won't deny their son the same happiness and joy in it.
Jack was too young to remember his family's faces outside of photos and portraits, but there is a lullaby that follows his dreams, crooning over his head and chasing away his nightmares.
For the longest time, he thought the extra dinner plate was for Oma because it's the same dishes and sweets she once ate, even to this day. Jack was quick to hunt for tidbits about them, and always attributed missing left shoes, misplaced kitchen pens, tipping empty glasses during holidays, and creaking floorboards at night as her mischief. I'm still here, it said. I won't leave.
Jack grew up with the same quilts that consumed him, produce that never spoils (the milk might, but it's easy to make cheese from sour milk), and all the little things that made a house a cozy home.
Much like her own family, June and Jack moved frequently as well. Pests were never a problem for them, nor were mold or leaks. They were strangely lucky in that regard.
The Esquivel home does have Others in their vicinity. It's due to the unknown actions of their youngest member. One day when Raf was far younger and playing hide-and-seek with his siblings and neighborhood kids, Raf came across a pitiful, little creature in a drying puddle.
It flopped and croaked, squirming and clawing at the edges of the barely wet concrete of the patio. Scales flaking in dull, resplendent hues, and its side bleeding a sluggish black ooze. It wasn't a fish. Fish had no arms or torsos, nor had his older brother's books on marine life had anything about fish with two tails. Or fish that scream hard enough to make his nose bleed and cry oily marbles that plink on the ground.
To this day, Raf doesn't know what compelled him to step closer but he did. He saw the strange eyes, blinded and pulsing with veins. Later he'll find out about nictitating membranes, but at the moment it was strange to see how a little, blind not-fish stared back at him, mewling something that skittered across his senses and he tasted blood at the back of his throat.
Mama Esquivel was livid over his son's wet jacket and then concerned when he showed the deep bite on his hand and how his nose continued to bleed.
The birdbath in their backyard does get visitors. Raf rises with the sun to watch strange fish-like creatures splash around the small fountain, singing beautifully to coax birds to eat them whole. His sisters think there's a hawk or an owl nearby that hunting down the smaller birds. Raf knows better. He leaves them lizards and newts, dead rats and mice from traps, and leftover meat and nopales that he can carefully sneak away. Much like corvids, they leave him those oily-slick marbles (pearls), carved sea glass that store whalesong, and beautifully intact shells that contain the noise of a howling tempest and the sea at its most furious.
He knows because they explained it to him. Safety, they said as Raf learns to invoke a flashflood and charm to remain inconspicuous and he understands.
"I wish I knew what you're saying to me," a boy told a small fae that was dropped by a red-tailed hawk, far away from any source of water to return home. Its laughter was the sounds of a babbling brook, the river rushing into the ocean's arms. It asked its savior what was the boon he wished for, and the child unknowingly answered. < Wish granted, little Mudman. > And it savagely bit his hand to share their blood for water touched everything and anything, and who else but the fae could bestow the gift of language of any tongue?
Just because Miko is far from Japan, that doesn't mean she doesn't have something attached to her. And of course, it's a cat.
At first, she thought a feral cat lost a match with a cactus or a porcupine and had recently escaped a trap based on all the pins and dragging tail, but not at all. Much to her amazement, it's fast on its paws. Far more agile and durable, she has seen the creature slash massive cacti and easily jump from the ground to rooftops.
The host family she stays at isn't as boring and straight-laced as she once thought. They do enjoy making homemade brews and other fermented goods. They allow the kids to sample it, but only on the weekends and after a good meal.
She gets a little information from her host family. It's a Catcus Cat - a mythical beast; something that isn't real.
Miko leaves a shallow bowl of her own efforts at making mead and other alcoholic beverages, and the Catcus Cat seems to take a liking to the fruitier and sweet drinks.
The Catcus Cat follows her to the Autobot base. Even when she was riding with Jack and Arcee, she was able to spy the beast racing alongside them in the sand, easily keeping pace.
It allows her to pet it occasionally. Purring as it keeps its spines flat and soft, still prickly but leaving no damage. But it prefers chasing games, so Miko cobbled a fishing rod with pieces of raw meat to play 'Fetch' and got a laser to watch it scramble up solid walls and scale cliffsides.
Unlike the Darby's Kobold and Raf's aquatic visitors, the Catcus Cat had interactions with the Autobots. Particularly Arcee and Bumblebee. They enjoy racing in the high-noon sun and dark empty roads at night. It comes along because very few can truly challenge them. And the Autobots think it's a baseline Earth animal. A charming one, even if its yowls are thundering.
Out of all the Autobots, it's Arcee that figured out something is off. Unlike Miko's inability to hide a new car and the Esquivel's already full garage, Arcee can fit comfortably in the Darby's garage. June even partitioned out an area for the Autobot to transform and scavenged large bean bags and thick body pillows as a makeshift bed.
June often works and Jack is either at Knockout Burger or the base after school, so Arcee has no idea how there are fresh meals, hot and ready on the stove as well as how the Pits her pillow nest is fluffed and straightened when there's no one at home!
Arcee thinks there's some sort of weird intruder in their house that likes being domestic, and it drives her nuts that June and Jack are completely nonchalant over the fact.
She's definitely not happy hearing it's been happening for over a decade, and no she doesn't believe it's the ghost of a dearly departed relative!

I adore ghost files but I really do not like the concept of doing home haunts of random viewers.
it's fun to believe, it's fun to explore houses pretending there's ghosts there, but using a random stranger's accounts of their experience with the supernatural in their home is super icky to me. they don't know this person. they could be experiencing serious symptoms from being slowly poisoned in their home by gas or black mold or something. they could have a psychological condition that causes hallucinations or paranoia. things like that could be going untreated bc they keep being reaffirmed that there's ghosts in their house. or they could be making it all up to use watcher as a jumping off point for internet fame or whatever.
it's extremely uncomfortable watching them pretend like those aren't options and potentially just broadcast someone's disorder or symptoms as a funny mystery.
in general they don't address the reality of the source of so many ghost sightings enough. it's not always the wind or animals outside. sometimes it's mold, sometimes it's schizophrenia, sometimes it's sleep paralysis etc. pretending those things don't exist is the reason so many people don't/didn't get the treatment they need. I get that the show is supposed to he entertainment, but there are topics that come with a certain responsibility too.

Hello hi hi hey!! I have to tell you how incredible all your art is and how every trigun au you share and develop makes my brain go brrr like a microwave on high (ELDRITCH PLANE AU TRANSLUCENT VASH HDFHGNVFD YOUR MINDDD)
BUT I to specifically gush about your recent orcawood art becausE I have been a longtime fandom lurker but have been actually maybe planning a fic after some decade(s?) of just reading, so have been quietly collecting any and all orcawoods for inspiration; but your wonderful art and au juiced me up with like +9999 points BECAUSE my story is a similar flavour of wildlife hospital!!! A couple of key differences and heavily informed by my love of speculative biology and my own involvement in wildlife rehab- but my GOD seeing such wonderful art and ideas so close to what's been souping around in my head is like jumper cables to the figurative nipples of my fic motivation.
Please please share any further thoughts you have around your wonderful au because it very much catalyses mine lol. And if I may humbly request borrowing Vash In Red Crocs for my story (if it does end up getting written) because oh my god you are so right and the image will not leave my head it's so him
AAHH THANK YOU SM!!! im very flattered my orcawood stuff is giving you motivation to write!! best of luck with that!! <3
since a lot of people have been asking for more orcawood, i have been trying to sketch some stuff. im not making any promises but MAYBE there will be more orcawood sooner than for mermay
also trying to remember some of the stuff ive been brainstorming when i was elbow deep in this au.. i have the terrible habit of never writing anything down and hoping i wont forget
it makes me cackle how much people love the red crocs! it was such a last minute addition bc vash NEEDED to wear something red in his work outfit and i felt like a red shirt wouldnt fit a marine wildlife center... and thus the red crocs were born
but yeah by all means let his legendary workplace drip spread far and wide!!

Super indulgent headcanon but Boost definitely likes cats, specifically hairless cats.
If he had one he'd always be dressing it up in clothes that match him and his car.
He'd probably name them something like Dr.Purrsuit or Nitrous.

Soma goes to Agni asking for something that clearly would require an adult or money or whatever.. Agni is like "..Ask your mother, Prince" and thus Soma is SWEATING... W-Which one???? Sebastian or Mey...
Actually, I think that would be an effortless decision! While Mey Rin puts her foot down when need be—she won’t let the prince go gallivanting off if doing so would put him in harm’s way—she’s the type of mum who cheerfully buys him that large bag of candy he begged for at the sweet shop, or lets him throw a sleepover at the townhouse for the other Kuro kids on a whim. Sebastian, on the other hand, is easily the strictest of Soma’s three parents, regardless of her pronouns at any given moment.
“I wouldn’t have to play disciplinarian this often if the two of you didn’t coddle him so much!” she scolds her partners.
Therefore, if Soma wants to take O!Ciel on an impromptu elephant ride through the grounds (they won’t crush any fences this time, he promises!), he’s infinitely more likely to wheedle maternal permission out of Mey…hopefully far out of demonic earshot. 😉

listen I know I already wrote a fic with the concept, but we need more of The Fire Nation loves Azula fics. the fact I had to make the tag on ao3 speaks for itself smh. the nick bio indicates that the fire nation adores Azula! and of course they do— she’s a prodigy who bends blue fire and super cool.
the fire nation loves Zuko is out, the fire nation loves Azula is in.

I'm almost done talking tonight I swear & I really do hate to bring up the Avatar comics but I only do it to talk about how much I love Kiyi conceptually despite hating what they chose to do with her (nothing). Like, the thing about Azula & Zuko is that they're hardwired not to view love or familial or sibling dynamics in a normal way. And you just throw this poor kid into the mix like "hey btw you have two siblings & also they've already got this whole super messed up obsessive codependent rivalry going on with each other welcome to the family!" Like, they're all three going to be SO jealous of each other & the relationship the other two have with each other & insecure & either hostile or uber-protective toward each other depending on the circumstances. I'm literally obsessed with the 3 of them IDK how the comics missed out on such an obviously insane trio sibling dynamic & how fun it could be if you let them all be characters instead of uncomfortable tropes but I'm having the time of my life writing them myself
