I will say, while I wish we got even more development for her, Keiko Randa is one of my very favorite Monsterverse characters now alongside Lee Shaw, Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson in K:SI), and Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Herny in GvsK). Mari Yamamoto has incredible presence and gravitas in her performance that makes her memorable even when the script could be giving her more to work with.

Titan History: Kong
Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.
Apologies for the lack of communication in recent weeks, Monarch has been hard at work collecting data and collaborating with global governments through the most recent Titan crisis, including the disposal of deceased Titan remains and the best course of action to take with Godzilla in his new resting place.
That said, today's communication will be going over a Titan who has been surging in popularity across the globe over the past few years; the undisputed king of the Hollow Earth, Kong.

Monarch Database File: Kong
Monarch Designation: Titanus Kong
Height: 337 feet
Weight: Unknown
Nature: Unknown
Behavioural Classification: Protector
-----
Until recently, Kong was believed to be the last of his kind. Born during a climactic final battle between his parents and a horde of Skullcrawlers (ravenous amphibian predators on Skull Island), Kong grew up in an isolated world filled with danger at every angle. Growing up to become the guardian deity of Skull Island, Kong was held in great reverence by the native Iwi tribe that lived on the island. His species, designated Apus giganticus, were also known protectors of the Iwi, fighting off the Skullcrawlers and other threats until their last breath.
During his centuries on the island, Kong fought a variety of creatures, from the Mire Squad and Sirenjaws to other Titans such as the mysterious Kraken or night-bringer Camazotz. However, in 2021, a storm generated by Monster Zero fused with the perpetual storm surrounding Skull Island and plunged it into chaos. Three years later, in 2024, Kong was removed from the island as the key to a daring plan to uncover a Hollow Earth energy source to stop Godzilla. The two alpha Titans clashed twice before setting aside their differences to take down Apex Cybernetics' rogue superweapon, Mechagodzilla.
Currently, Kong now resides in the Hollow Earth alongside a newly-freed tribe of his speices, an orange ape-like Titan which he seems to have adopted as a son, and the ancient ice Titan Shimo.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Monarch officials reviewing recovered footage of Kong from the doomed 1973 expedition to Skull Island, circa. 2019)
While Kong's exact origins are unknown, research conducted within the Iwi settlement appears to place his birth somewhere in the 17th Century, making him perhaps the youngest Titan on record. However, his entangled history with Monarch began much later, in 1973.
In a time where Monarch was on its last legs and facing the possibility of being shut down, founding figure William Randa and geological advisor Houston Brooks lobbied to piggyback on a Landsat expedition to Skull Island. With a military escort courtesy of the Sky Devils squadron, the team dropped seismic charges on the island to map the bedrock beneath the surface. Unknown to them at the time, their charges awakened the Skullcrawlers living in thermal vents beneath the island and incurred Kong's wrath.
Kong swiftly destroyed the Sky Devils' helicopters, leaving the survivors split into two groups. One, including Brooks, encountered the Iwi and stranded WW2 pilot Hank Marlow, where they learned about Kong and his history with the Skullcrawlers. A second, including Randa, embarked on a mission of revenge driven by Colonel Preston Packard.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Kong battling the remnants of the Sky Devil squadron after being lured into a napalm trap, circa. 1973)
After being lured into a napalm trap by Packard, Kong was initially helpless to battle the recently awakened Skull Devil, the last of the adult Skullcrawlers that had a hand in wiping out his family centuries prior. Recovering quickly, the two beasts engaged in a brutal encounter. Following some assistance from the expedition survivors, Kong triumphed by tearing out the Skull Devil's innards, avenging his parents in the process.
His next major sighting occured in 1993, but without a Monarch presence on Skull Island at the time, this is pending investigation. According to witnesses, Kong did battle with a large underwater Titan (designated 'Kraken'), after being coaxed to the island's coast by Annie, a young girl stranded on the island for years with a strange dog-like beast as a companion. After exchanging many blows, Kong ultimately killed the Titan by tearing its body in half.
In 1995, Aaron Brooks (Houston's son) led an unauthorized expedition to Skull Island, as he felt unsatisfied with leaving protection against the Skullcrawlers to Kong alone. During their stay, mythographer Walter Riccio experienced vivid visions of Kong's origins, under the influence of an Iwi medicinal drink. When Riccio destroyed the wall to the Iwi village, Kong stepped in to vanquish the Mother Longlegs swarm that seized their chance and killed Riccio before communing with Aaron and the Iwi.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Artistic rendition of Kong tearing the "Kraken" Titan in two, based off eyewitness testimony, circa. 1993)
In the following decades, Kong was largely left to his own devices as the island's guardian. Though Monarch teams briefly assisted him in 2015 with a crisis involving the unknown organisation Janos Biotech and the island's Snarehunter population, and Kong himself kept a horde of Skullcrawlers that attempted to leave the island in response to Monster Zero's 'alpha call' in 2019, no major events really transpired between 1995 and 2021.
In 2021, as mentioned previously, Skull Island was plunged into chaos when one of Monster Zero's residual storms merged with the storm system surrounding Skull Island. When darkness fell, the bat Titan Camazotz emerged and battled Kong for dominion over the island. Thanks to a daring pilot triggering a sonic boom to disorient Camazotz, Kong was able to prevail, though he was ultimately unable to save his home.
Three years later, and the artificial habitat Monarch built for Kong was unable to hold him much longer. He was reluctantly taken to the sea and transported to Antarctica's Outpost 32 (now rebuilt as a Hollow Earth station), though not without attracting Godzilla, who destroyed the naval fleet transporting him and almost drowned the ape. Following the acquisition of an axe left in the Hollow Earth by his ancestors, Kong and Godzilla clashed again in Hong Kong. While Godzilla prevailed through sheer power, Kong refused to submit to his rule.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Kong leaping onto Godzilla's back from a building after staging an ambush, circa. 2024)
After being revived by an exploding H.E.A.V, Kong jumped in to stop Mechagodzilla from executing his organic counterpart. Setting aside their differences, the two Titans teamed up to take down the mecha. A blast from Godzilla's atomic breath charged up Kong's axe, and he was able to deal the finishing blow by hacking Mechagodzilla to pieces and holding its severed head in triumph. The two Titans regarded each other one more time before parting ways.
Which brings us to the present. While much of what transpired is still being compiled to our databanks, it is known that Kong returned to the surface on three different occassions. The first was to have an infected tooth removed at a Monarch facility, the second was in Egypt to coerce Godzilla into assisting him, and the third was a two-on-two battle in Brazil between Kong and Godzilla, and Shimo and the "Skar King", evil ruler of the Kong tribe in Hollow Earth.
-----
And there you go! An up-to-date account of Kong's history in the modern world, intertwined with Monarch from the 1970's. Currently, Kong is enjoying life down in the Hollow Earth, and as the world should do, this is where we leave Kong's story be, until the world needs him again.
Until next time,
Monarch: After Dark

The First Gods Oneshot
You mentioned you would be interested in reading it, so I'm happy to announce that I've started to work on the informed!Monarch oneshot, under the tentative title of "The First Gods," in what I think I'll call the Symbiosis timeline. It's still rough and in its first draft stages, but here's a preliminary snippet:
---
Colonel Preston Packard sat down on the crate in front of William Randa, and pulled out a pistol.
“You are going to tell me everything I don't know…”
He aimed the pistol at the scientist, who had gone very still.
“...or I'm gonna blow your head off.”
  Randa sighed.
“Better to tell everyone at once. Let’s go down to your men?”
The colonel’s eyes narrowed dangerously, but he nodded. Keeping Randa at gunpoint, Packard walked them both down the grassy slope towards the shore of the river, where the other survivors were waiting.
“Everyone, on me! The scientist has got some explaining to do!”
The survivors gathered into a rough semicircle around Randa and Packard. Randa turned, looking at the assembled group.
  “Monsters exist.”
  “No shit,” Packard deadpanned.
“I work for an organization called Monarch. Monarch was founded with the original purpose of studying Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, MUTOs, but that mission changed when we found out why humanity was really here.”
“What do you mean?” the colonel asked. Randa smiled, but there was no warmth in his expression.
“Humanity’s not the masters of the planet. We never have been. The only reason our species isn’t extinct, the only reason we’ve been allowed to grow this much, is that the Queen of the Monsters thinks we’re cute, and convinced the King to get all of the other ones to avoid us if possible.”
  Packard snorted.
“Oh, and she told you this herself, did she?”
Randa slowly rolled up his left sleeve, revealing a thin sliver of something embedded in his arm, glowing blue. He tapped it twice, and the glow pulsed before dark vein-like spider web patterns began to ever-so-slowly grow from it under his skin.
“Yes, Colonel. When we found an ancient temple in China and accidentally woke her up, she did in fact tell us. Ever since then, Monarch’s purpose changed: We’re the go-betweens. We’re the diplomats between humanity and the Titans, beings so far above us they might as well be gods.”
Packard sneered incredulously, glancing around at his men.
  “You hear this shit?”
Randa smiled sadly and sighed, drawing the colonel’s angry eyes back to him.
“Why don’t we get the ‘proof’ bit out of the way, so I can talk without needing to try and convince you of every little thing I say. Go ahead, unload that whole gun at me.”
Preston Packard’s face twisted, then six gunshots rang out, rapid-fire.
And six deformed disks of metal dropped to the ground, the bullets flattened against a shield of shimmering blue-green light that twisted around Randa’s body. The soldiers’ eyes went wide with shock.
“There are benefits to regularly interacting with Titans, Colonel. Believe me now?”
---
“The true purpose of this expedition was to determine why the two Titan rulers of this island had gone silent. We’ve been trying to get through the storm for years to find out, since none of the other Titans capable of ferrying us here would make the time to take us. They think of checkups in terms of decades and centuries, not weeks and years. And seeing who we ran into, I think I know why this place went silent.”
“Oh?” Mason Weaver asked, still partly in shock from the crash earlier in the day. San Lin, James Conrad, Hank Marlow, and Houston Brooks were all sitting there on the riverbank as Randa brought them up to speed on what he’d previously told the military folk.
“Yes. You see, that Kong that brought down our helicopters? That was a child.”
  Dead silence.
Randa could see the moment the implications sank in for each and every one of his listeners. He could almost imagine the thoughts of those who hadn’t been in the know: ‘Oh God, they get BIGGER?’
“Well, more a teenager, I suppose. But anyways, I’m fairly sure that Kong is the child of the two Titans we were looking for, and that he was orphaned before they could teach him about Monarch. The bombing’s a bit of a ritual, you see. While we were using it for a seismic survey this time as well, it’s usually to flush up a bunch of skullcrawlers for the Kongs to exterminate. Those damn lizards hide down there in the tunnels, and can get pretty nasty if their population’s not kept under control,” he continued.
“Wait wait wait,” Mason Weaver interrupted. “Why did you keep these… these Titans a secret? Why? You’ve known about them for years! The people deserve to know!”
  Randa smiled sadly.
“Miss Weaver, as a photojournalist you may not believe in the saying, but for the vast majority of humanity, ignorance is indeed bliss.”
  Predictably, she scoffed. Randa continued.
“The existence of Titans, just the fact that they’re real, has been enough to drive people insane. We’ve been working on the issue — we’re publishing children’s books that encourage the idea that monsters and humans can coexist, we’re pushing the ideas of open-mindedness and tolerance further and further in every culture, and we’ve partnered with just about every government around the globe to set up secret emergency procedures just in case. But the world just isn’t ready yet. Maybe in a few decades, but not yet.”
“‘Tolerance’ may be a bit difficult for the colonel,” Conrad cut in, keeping his voice low. “He’s determined to get revenge for his men.”
  Randa smiled, unworried.
“I called for backup when I activated my shield. The Queen will have felt it, and will have sent someone to pick us up — Monarch has agreements regarding favors and emergencies. A few more hours, and whoever it is should be here. A day at the latest, if the only ones available are aquatic. If the colonel’s truly that stubborn, recommend setting a trap, it should delay him long enough.”
 ---
(Whether the shield is tech derived from studying the Titans with their permission, or something more spiritual that Mothra granted to Randa is left ambiguous for now. The story will quickly move away from Skull Island to the wider world, showing Monarch's new ideals through a series of snippets.)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
---
OHOHO! I like what I'm seeing so far and looking forward to the rest once it's ready, thanks so much for sharing! Merry Christmas!

Where In The World Is Phryne Fisher?
This week Phryne finds herself in Dayton, Ohio!
Dayton thinks of itself as the Birthplace of Aviation since the Wright Brothers invented and tested their first planes here (Yes, we all know that Kitty Hawk claims first in flight, but the work was done here, near the sight of current day Wright-Patterson Airforce Base). The Wright Brothers weren't the only great inventors in Dayton. We also boast about Charles Kettering, who invented the electric starter for automobiles, and many others.
Tumblr media
Phryne stands between the Wright Brothers' hats on a bench outside The Engineers' Club. It was founded in 1914 by Charles Kettering and Colonel Edward Deeds to foster innovation through the sharing of ideas, guest speakers and more. We doubt the very female Phryne could have been a member at the beginning, but perhaps she could have been a guest of their most famous member, Orville Wright, at one of the lectures.
Tumblr media
She definitely wanted to spend time at The Dayton Woman's Club, home to a 100+ year-old non-profit group devoted to empowering women and strengthening the community.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever the art-lover, Phryne drops by the Dayton Art Institute looking for a Margaret Preston. Unfortunately, there are no Margaret Preston's in the museum. But she did enjoy the many exhibits and having her picture taken with Leo the Lion, who guards the property.
Tumblr media
Liberty Tower is a beautiful Art Deco building in Dayton, so Phryne stopped by, mainly to check that her money was safe in the vault.
Tumblr media
Is that Bert and Cec outside the tower?
Tumblr media
Another Building in Downtown Dayton that caught Phryne's attention currently is home to AT&T. (Hey, they haven't made the center of the earth explode yet!)
Tumblr media
Phryne also couldn't resist stopping in The Packard Museum to look at the latest models on the showroom floor. She does like shiny things. Perhaps Dot would like a new race car?
Tumblr media
Phryne was crunched for time, but she couldn't turn down an invitation to Hawthorne Hill from Orville Wright. They had much to talk about at the Wright Brothers' Mansion.

Looking back at the start of the Kong: Skull Island movie, I remembered how Packard talked about the story of Icarus:
[Preston's squad flies through a storm]
Preston Packard : And remember the story of Icarus, whose father gave him wings of wax. Warned him not to fly too close to the sun. But the exhilaration was too great. So he flew higher and higher, until the sun melted his wings, and he fell into the sea. The US Army is not an irresponsible father. So they gave us wings of hot Pennsylvania steel, guaranteed not to melt.
And I was a bit baffled, back in that scene, because that was not what I had taken from the Icarus myth at all – Icarus died because he didn’t listen (to a responsible father, who did what he could and warned him) and got so cocky to think the laws of nature wouldn’t be able to touch or influence him – as if he could soar above them, instead of knowing his place.
Now I wonder if that’s actually a very clever hint to how Packard ends up during the course of the movie – he didn’t listen when people tried to tell him Kong is not the threat, didn’t listen when people tried to warn and save him, and ultimately died because he thought he could fight Kong (or nature) and do something he’s clearly not supposed and able to do.
Packard became Icarus.
And I think that’s actually freaking clever.
