Every September, my friend Marc Hong, a professor at Louisville Seminary, hosts Psalmtember. He invites you to join in, too!
Think "Inktober," but in September and with a spiritual focus — and with any art form welcome, from drawing to poetry to photography and beyond. There's also no pressure to create something for every day — do as many or as few as you like.
Here's Marc's description of this artistic event:
Each year, I love to spend a month making art inspired by the Psalms. There are 30 days in September, meaning that I can evenly divide up the 150 Psalms into 5 sets of 30. So, if I do this for 5 years, I will have made art with all of the Psalms.
Join me! The prompt list is in the image [as well as below the readmore]. But other words may stand out to you! Or you may try to make art that represents the wholeness of the Psalm.
I encourage you to read the text of the whole Psalm each day, consider what emotions it stirs up in you, choose a medium that speaks to you, and make some art! Folks have painted, used ink, drawn with colored pencils, taken photographs, written haikus, and much more. Choose what stirs delight in you!

Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart
1 My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands;
2 For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.

Embracing the Fruit of the Spirit:
Cultivating Christlike Character
Introduction:
Embark on a transformative journey through the fruit of the Spirit as we explore the qualities that reflect the character of Christ. Join us on this enriching exploration of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, and discover how they can shape our lives and relationships.
Scripture Passage: Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

Commentary:
In Galatians 5, Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit as evidence of a life surrendered to Christ. These qualities—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—flow from a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit and reflect the character of Christ Himself.
In John 15, Jesus uses the analogy of the vine and branches to illustrate the importance of abiding in Him to bear fruit. He emphasizes the intimate connection between abiding in His love and producing fruit that glorifies the Father.
Colossians 3 calls believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving as the Lord has forgiven us. These virtues are essential for maintaining unity in the body of Christ.
In 2 Peter 1, believers are encouraged to make every effort to add to their faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. These qualities ensure that we will be effective and productive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Love:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - The characteristics of love as described by Paul.
John 13:34-35 - Jesus commands his disciples to love one another as He has loved them.
1 John 4:7-12 - Believers are called to love one another because love comes from God.
Joy:
Psalm 16:11 - In God's presence is fullness of joy.
Nehemiah 8:10 - The joy of the Lord is our strength.
John 15:11 - Jesus desires His joy to be in us, and for our joy to be complete.
Peace:
Isaiah 26:3 - God promises perfect peace to those whose minds are steadfast.
Romans 5:1 - Through faith in Jesus, we have peace with God.
Philippians 4:6-7 - God's peace guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Patience:
Ecclesiastes 7:8 - Patience is better than pride.
Romans 12:12 - Believers are called to be patient in affliction.
James 5:7-8 - Be patient and stand firm, for the Lord's coming is near.
Kindness:
Ephesians 4:32 - Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other.
Proverbs 19:22 - What is desired in a man is kindness.
Colossians 3:12 - As God's chosen people, clothe yourselves with kindness.
Goodness:
Psalm 23:6 - Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.
Romans 12:21 - Overcome evil with good.
Titus 2:14 - Christ gave himself for us to redeem us and purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
Faithfulness:
1 Corinthians 4:2 - Faithfulness is required of stewards.
2 Timothy 2:13 - God remains faithful even when we are faithless.
Revelation 2:10 - Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown.
Gentleness:
Proverbs 15:1 - A gentle answer turns away wrath.
Galatians 6:1 - Restore others gently when they are caught in sin.
1 Peter 3:15 - In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.
Self-Control:
Proverbs 25:28 - A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
1 Corinthians 9:25 - Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
Titus 2:11-12 - For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.

Help us to cultivate these virtues daily, empowering us to love as you love, to bring joy wherever we go, and to walk in peace amidst life's storms. May our lives bear witness to your transformative power and bring glory to your name. Amen.

1 (Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite.) I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

25 The merciful can see Your mercy. The just can see Your justice.
26 The pure can see Your purity. But You appear perverse to those who are evil.
27 You save afflicted people, but You bring down the high and mighty.
28 Shaddai, You light my lamp and make my darkness bright!
29 With Your help I can escape from my enemies. With You I can leap over any wall!
30 Shaddai is perfect in Her ways, and all Her promises prove true. She protects all who take refuge in Her.
31 Who is our Rock, save God?
32 Shaddai girds me with strength and makes my way secure.
33 She sets my feet securely on the heights, as if I were a deer.
34 She teaches me how to bear conflict and how to bend what is strong.
35 She shields me with salvation, and Her right hand holds me up. Her gentleness has made me strong!
36 She has made a wide place for my steps, so that I do not slip...
49 For this I will praise You among the nations, Shaddai. I will sing glad songs to glorify Your name!

Line Upon Line Lesson 027: Blessing and Deceit
Genesis 27:41 - So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
Why was Esau so intent on obtaining Isaac’s blessing? Why did his mother Rebekah encourage him to obtain it using deceitful means? What was so significant about this blessing that Esau was seeking to kill Jacob for stealing from him?
Let’s read together Genesis 25:24-28.
Isaac and Rebekah had fraternal twins - Esau and Jacob. Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob as the two grew up. Isaac and Rebekah should have loved their children equally. Their favoritism played a role into the eventual strife between Esau and Jacob.
Let’s read together Genesis 17:18-21; Genesis 21:8-14; Numbers 3:12-13; and Deuteronomy 21:15-17.
God established a divine birthright after making a covenant with Abraham. Isaac was designated the son of promise, even though Ishmael was technically Abraham’s firstborn son.
The firstborn son was given a double portion of his father’s inheritance. The firstborn also was given the responsibility of the priesthood for the family.
Let’s read together Genesis 25:23, 29-34; Genesis 26:34-35; Galatians 5:16-21; and Hebrews 12:15-17.
If the birthright was so important, why did Esau sell it to Jacob for a pot of stew? Esau lived for the here and now. It seems he would rather gratify his flesh immediately then dwell upon spiritual things.
Esau would not die if he skipped a meal. Yet he saw his birthright as less valuable than a bowl of stew.
Esau’s lack of spirituality is further evident when you examine who he chose to marry. Esau married two Hittite women, causing grief to his parents.
Why did Jacob take advantage of Esau in this situation? Rebekah remembered the prophecy God gave her before her children were born. She was intent on making sure Jacob obtained that birthright by any means necessary. She must have influenced Jacob to desire Esau’s birthright.
Let’s read together Obadiah 1:10-11 and 1 John 3:15.
Esau was only interested in the temporal benefits of Isaac’s blessing. This is why he wanted to kill his brother. The priesthood had no value for him.
Let read together Psalm 27:14; Psalm 37:34; and Isaiah 41:30.
Jacob’s deceitful actions had consequences. He had to run away from home to flee his brother’s wrath. Little did he know, Jacob would never see his mother again. Jacob should have waited on God instead of taking matters into his own hands.
May we learn from the mistakes of Esau and Jacob.

1 I waited, waited for יהוה; And He inclined to me, and heard my cry.
2 And He drew me Out of the pit of destruction, Out of the muddy clay, And He set my feet upon a rock, He is establishing my steps.
3 Then He put a new song in my mouth; Praise to our Elohim; Many do see it and fear, And trust in יהוה.
4 Blessed is that man who has made יהוה his trust, And has not turned to the proud, And those turning aside to falsehood.
5 O יהוה my Elohim, many are the wonders Which You have done, and Your purposes toward us; There is no one to compare with You; I declare and speak: They are too many to be numbered.
6 Slaughtering and meal offering You did not desire; You have opened my ears; Burnt offering and sin offering You did not ask for.
7 Then I said, “See, I have come; In the scroll of the Book it is prescribed for me.
8 I have delighted to do Your pleasure, O my Elohim, And Your Torah is within my hearta.”
9 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness, In the great assembly; See, I do not restrain my lips, O יהוה, You know.
10 I did not conceal Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your trustworthiness and Your deliverance; I did not hide Your kindness and Your truth From the great assembly.
11 Do not withhold Your compassion from me, O יהוה; Let Your kindness and Your truth always watch over me.
12 For evils without number have surrounded me; My crookednesses have overtaken me, And I have been unable to see; They became more than the hairs of my head; And my heart has failed me.
13 Be pleased, O יהוה, to deliver me; O יהוה, hasten to help me!
14 Let those who seek to destroy my life Be ashamed and abashed altogether; Let those who are desiring my evil Be driven back and put to shame.
15 Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” Be appalled at their own shame.

Psalm 37
(King James Version)
37 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4 Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
12 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.
13 The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.
15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.
16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the Lord upholdeth the righteous.
18 The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.
19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.
22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.
28 For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.
30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

1 (To the chief Musician, A Psalm or Song of David.) Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.
2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

FREEDOM FROM THE PAST
We are entering a new season in 2023 of a fresh start! We are in a divinely appointed time of refreshing and restoring:
"So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame" (Joel 2:25-26).
This is a new day in which you may boldly declare, "Old things have passed away!" (see Isaiah 48:6-7).
GOD FORGETS YOUR PAST
Through our repentance, God always makes a way to free us from our past. We take this encouragement to heart -- not letting our past failures keep us from experiencing our future victories!
We remember this vital promise:
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:1-2 KJV).
The Lord has already lavished us with abundant, extravagant forgiveness and grace to empower us to leave behind:
every single past sin and failure, which includes -- the days of regret,
doubt and fear,
the many missed opportunities and failed relationships,
the seasons of backsliding and passivity,
the detours of the works of the flesh.
As we believe His Word of forgiveness and set our heart to seek the Lord, we will find overwhelming grace and mercies for each day (see Jeremiah 29:12-13).
AFFIRMATIONS
I never give up.
I ask, seek, and knock (Matthew 7:7) until I understand and implement God’s purpose for my life.
I never give in again to a mindset of guilt and failure (see Hebrews 10:35).
I was created to carry His glory and presence into a lost and dying world.
God has confidence in me. (see Deuteronomy 28:13).
I am His choice (see Ephesians 2:10), chosen for "such a time as this" (Esther 4:14).
GOD REDEEMS YOUR WOUNDS
Truly, it was by the stripes of Jesus Christ that we were healed (see Isaiah 53:5).
Even the wounds that we have suffered will become great avenues of healing. Since we are healed from our wounds -- then we receive grace for healing others! We bring Christ's healing and comfort to others in the areas in which we ourselves have been afflicted (see 1 Thessalonians 5:11).
GOD BRINGS BREAKTHROUGH
God is even now releasing divine favor to us for accomplishing great exploits for His glory. In Psalm 84:11 (NLT), we learn how He lavishes His blessings of grace and glory:
"For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right."
Matthew 7:8 AMP -- "For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, the door will be opened."
Even if you have not had revelation of God's CALLING on your life, do not lose heart! God is saying, "Try again!" It is time to regroup and try again, knowing that failure is never God's plan (see Jeremiah 29:11). You will see doors open that were closed to you previously. God is granting breakthrough.
You experience the overwhelming love and favor of God as you leave the past behind and boldly take hold of the your Christ calling and begin bearing fruit that remains for His Kingdom.
