Thriving: Rebirth

Beginning of Chapter Eight—

Warren got the last of the mask tubing plugged into its ports on his black form suit when he entered the shuttle bay. He looked up as the top of the capsule lifted and Thrive climbed out, a thick hooded cloak settling around his feet as he came to a harsh halt facing the door.

Warren froze. The coldness in Thrive's stony stare, his darkened brow, chilled him to the bone and sent his heart into palpitations. He'd been on the receiving end of that stare far too many times.

"I thought Osillo was—"

Thrive brought a finger to his lips and Warren's jaw snapped shut. Thrive ducked into the capsule again and Warren followed, willing himself to keep his back straight and his spine intact.

End of Chapter Eight—

"…But they're right there," Guetry said. "Are they sure?"

"They saw the ships leave with their own eyes."

Osillo seemed agitated, their leg bouncing beside the console with increased vigor. Warren noticed this but said nothing.

"If they're sure they saw the Morrite ships leaving," Emnophene said, trailing off as she didn't appear to have a follow-up to that thought.

"Are these the Emmuli…?" Warren asked low enough that the bridge wouldn't hear.

"No," Thrive said tightly through the comm. "We've been betrayed."

Warren's stomach fell into his boots. "…[redacted]."
