You did it, you finally blew it all over again. Freezing up in a fight, nearly getting yourself killed. And that is what would have happened had Zoro not jumped in front of you, taking down your opponent with ease. He wasted no time to turn on his heel, facing you. You could make out many different emotions in his expression. A little confusion, a bit of anger, and even some disappointment.

He opened his mouth to say something. To ask you what the hell was wrong with you. To ask why you didn't move, why you didn't pick up your sword and defend yourself as a swordsman should!

But he stopped himself as he saw your face. That frightened look in your eyes, tears of fear welling in the corners, as if you'd seen a ghost.

You hadn't stopped thinking about the incident since it happened. To be a swordsman is to always remain in control of yourself and the blade, to never lash out and lose sight, or else things could go very wrong. And that day, things did very wrong.

You lost control of the blade, nearly gouging out one of your captain's eyes. Your own saving grace was Luffy himself, being able to react fast enough.

You'd never forgive yourself, retiring your blade to the corner of the training room. You haven't touched it since and you never planned on picking it up again. Luffy was alive and well, smiling and hopping from wall to wall like he always did. But he almost lost an eye because of you, that was nothing something you could just let fade away.

Rather than training as you used to, you'd spend your afternoons in the back of the Sunny, leaning against the railings as you looked out at the sights that the Grand Line had to offer. Just anything to take your mind off of the incident even if it was for a brief moment.

"Are you going to talk about what happened or are you just going to continue to sulk by yourself?" The green-haired swordsmen's voice sounded from behind you.

You didn't even answer. Your head fell in shame, in disappointment. You wondered if he was still disappointed in you as well, too afraid to look him in the eye as you recalled his expression after he saved your ass.

Zoro took his place right next to you, letting his back rest against the railing. He folded his arms across his broad chest, letting his head fall slightly, closing his eye.

There was a silence between the two of you. The only sound that could be heard were the high winds from above and the sounds of the waves crashing against the ship from below. It felt like you were waiting forever for him to say something, anything was better than this cruel silence. You had no idea what he was thinking, if his opinion of you had changed, if he had even considered you a friend anymore.

Out of the corner of your eye, you see him move, picking his head up and opening his eye, looking up at the white clouds. "Talk to me, ( y/n )," He began, finally looking at you, "Whatever it is you're feeling, what you're going through right now...just tell me."

Slowly you picked your head up, facing your fear of seeing the disappointment in his gaze. But there was no disappointment, there was no anger. There was worry, there was concern, there was care. Expressions of which you haven't seen much from him. He was always so calm and collected, a man to admire. But the Zoro before you, you had yet to see.

"I feel...lost," You started, looking down at your hands, "I feel like...I don't know who I am anymore. I...I almost hurt...Luffy. I can never forgive myself for that."

"Accidents happen. They happen to all of us. You are not a bad person for making a mistake. You are human," He noted.

You shook your head, "I lashed out. I lost control. And it almost took someone else's life! And then when I stop using my sword, I freeze up and I'm utterly helpless! I'm no better than a fish out of the water! I'm too much of a risk to be a part of this crew. You all have done nothing but care about me...and this is thanks I give you all."

Hot tears ran down your face. You were angry at yourself for all of this. "Everything would just be better if I left―"

"Don't finish that sentence." His voice was firm, "Never say that about yourself. We would not be the same without you. I wouldn't be the same without you. Mistakes happen. It is up to you whether or not you allow it to define who you are. And if you asked me, I know that you are better than that. You're a great swordsman and an even greater person. Never, ever forget that."

His words were warm and comforting. The look in his eye confirmed that he was genuine.

"Thank you for listening to me. I can't even begin to tell you how much it means to me," You thanked him with a small sniffle, wiping away the streams of tears from your face with the back of your hand.

He shrugged his shoulders, "Don't mention it. And ( y/n ), don't rush yourself to pick back up where you left off. Don't feel pressured to pick your sword back up just yet."

"How do you know if I'm going to pick it back up at all?"

He thought for a moment, "Call it a hunch. All you need to do is find yourself and your trust in yourself. Take it easy until then and don't be so hard on yourself, yeah?"

You nodded.

Zoro placed his hand on top of your head, a small smile forming, "I believe in you."

I couldn’t help but use the dragon prince as the show they watch while cuddling because it’s one of my favorites right now and if you’ve watched you should understand my comparisons, if you haven’t watched it I highly recommend, it has such diversity and has the same feel as Avatar the Last Airbender, plus there are a bunch of easter eggs for atla because one of the creators was also a writer and producer on Avatar. Dating Yuta has been a dream come true. He is the sweetest guy I have ever met and it feels like he understands me better than anyone. It’s almost like he can sense when I’m having a bad day because today he suggested that we skip hanging out with our friends to just stay in and watch one of my favorite shows. So, that's exactly what we are doing right now, we’er cuddled up on my bed with a bowl of skittles on my lap watching The Dragon Prince on netflix.

I just really enjoy laying with him and commenting on the little jokes each character makes or judging Viren for being a horrible father. We also like to try and figure out which character reminds us of each other and our friends, that’s the current debate we are having.

“There is no way Toge is Claudia, if anything he’s Zym. Because one, he can’t talk, and two he likes to cause trouble. I don’t think any of our friends are evil enough to be Claudia.” I said completely flabbergasted that he would insinuate that our best friend would be able to do such horrid things to people and animals.

He laughed and said “I wasn’t saying that because I think he’s evil or something, I was saying it because in the first few seasons Claudia is a complete dork, yeah she sucks for doing dark magic but she does dumb stuff as well. Anyway, now that we have Inumaki picked, who would Maki be? I personally think Rayla is an exact copy of her; they would both roll their eyes and slap someone for being an idiot.”

I chuckled at his defense, “I completely agree. Maki is also too stubborn to ask for help when she really needs it. Panda is Ezran, I will not accept any argument, he understands Toge and encourages his dumb behaviors.” I started with no room for argument.  “Also you are Soren, don't try to fight it, that's my final decision and I'm sticking to it.”

“W-what how am I Soren?” My boyfriend looked at me obviously confused by my statement. “I’m not disagreeing, I’m just curious why you think that.”

“Well for one you both use swords to fight. But most importantly, you are both extremely kind in spite of the fact you have both been through a lot. Soren spent years being gaslite by his father into doing horrible things, and when he tried to make his sister see it she also tried to gaslight him. Once he finally realized his family was doing horrible things he made the hard choice to leave them and change for the better. Now I’m not saying you have the same past but I know you struggled and suffered for a while. Having Rika lash out everytime something even came close to threatening you and not understanding it had to have been difficult, but instead of giving up, you decided to keep fighting and try and make it so no one else has to go through what you did.” I pointed out the major similarities between the two swordsmen. “Also I think you are both adorable.”

He just watched amazed by my reasoning, thinking I was just gonna say it was because they both use swords and are dorks, but no it was like I had thought about this alot. “I-i- Wow, you’ve thought about that a lot haven’t you?” he asked with a light blush.

I smiled up at him. “ Yeah I have, you have been through a lot and I'm proud of you for it. Now the most important question, what character am I?” I asked, trying to see his brain work.

“Oh definitely Bait.” He said confidently as I looked at him in shock.

“Excuse me, I just gave a college dissertation level speech on why I think you are a handsome swordsman, and all I get is a toad.” I said sitting up and turning to fully face him.

“Well yeah you are both adorable when you’re grumpy, both love shiny things, and you have a massive sweet tooth.” He said, defending his choice, reaching to try and pull back to lay with him. I begrudgingly layed back down resting my head on his chest, I felt his arm wrap around my shoulders as he placed a kiss to the top of my head. “Now shush, one of your favorite moments is coming up.”

I just nodded and snuggled closer to his side as I turned to watch as general Amya accidentally ruined her own engagement. I always find it funny, like yeah I get wanting to propose in a flashy way but seriously. Amya is a high ranked general who doesn't seem like someone who enjoys random surprises, what else would you expect to happen ambushing her with what look like flaming whips. I chuckled at the scene before closing my eyes, just enjoying the time I get to spend cuddling Yuta. I whispered a quiet “I Love you” as I drifted off to sleep.

Right as I let sleep take over, I heard Yuta respond with his “I love you too” before we both feel asleep to the sounds of dragons, elves, and magic.

You were worried about Felix. Again. Honestly, at this point, when were you not?

He was consistently overworking himself. Which was normal, you had to admit, but he’d been in a bad way recently. His red eyes being brought out by prominent eye bags, his bed left empty and door left ajar late at night when you’d go to visit him. Nights spent tirelessly training and training, the sword never leaving his hand. He had to improve. Every hour spent sleeping, eating, even spent with you, was a waste in his mind. Only if he was swinging a sword at a training dummy or a real partner was an hour worth living. It wasn’t healthy, for him or you. 

And it hurt you. With every swing of his sword, it was as though he was chopping up your heart, breaking it into billions of pieces, smaller with every hit.

It hurt you seeing him exhausted, hardly eating, hardly sleeping. It hurt you seeing him look like a walking corpse. It stung seeing the fresh calluses on his hands from gripping the sword. It stung how he seemed to enjoy his time training more than spending time with you.

This had to stop, you realized. You had to put an end to this, for not only your sake, but mostly for his. You were worried sick. You knew Felix better than anybody, and you could read him cover to cover like a little kid could read a picture book. You knew he wouldn’t stop until he was physically unable to continue, and even then, he’d still try. Stubborn as a mule, that boy was. Obstinate bitch. But he was your obstinate bitch, and you loved him. 

These thoughts led you to the training grounds at 2 in the morning, knowing that’s where you’d find him. Sure enough, there he was, black hair tied up and slicked with sweat, sword buried deep within a training dummy as nobody else was awake to spar with you. As you entered, Felix looked up, his crimson eyes lighting up with recognition.

“Ah, [Y/N],” He began, pulling the sword out of the dummy. You could see how exhausted he was just from studying his face. His eyes were glossy with exhaustion. When was the last time he slept? “Spar with me.”

“What? No. Felix. How long have you been at this?” You asked, furrowing your eyebrows as you came closer. “Do you have any idea what time it is? When was the last time you’ve eaten? Slept? Bathed? Took care of yourself?” The fact that he even had to pause to think about it broke your heart. It was as though you were the training dummy, ripped through the chest by his sword, stuffing spilling out of the gaping hole that was left where your heart was. He was neglecting himself. You weren’t surprised, but still torn all the same.

​​”Those things won’t help me get better.” He said with a scoff, turning away from you to start thrusting his sword at the training dummy once more. You could feel the tears begin to gather in your eyes. Stubborn. Stubborn, stubborn boy. 

“Felix, they will. You can’t get stronger if you keep neglecting yourself. Everybody needs rest, Felix. Even the strongest of swordsmen still take days off to make sure they’re in top condition.” You were right, and he knew that. He just refused to admit it. Too prideful to ever admit he was wrong. He looked up at you, and you could see just how exhausted he was. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out. He just swayed back and forth for a few seconds before his eyes snapped shut and he went toppling to the floor, sword clattering to the ground. 

You rushed forwards, grabbing him before he could hit his head. You were crying now, gently propping his head up in your lap. You vowed to yourself at that moment. The next day, you’d force him to stay in bed. You’d cook for him, run him a nice warm bath, wash his clothes, and you’d keep him 10 feet away from a sword at all times. 

So, lit only by the light of the moon, you carried him back to his room. You laid him in his bed after you’d changed the sheets, tucked him in, closed the blinds and let him sleep for as long as he needed to. You cleaned up his room a bit, washed the pile of dirty clothes that had accumulated on his floor, and then you just waited. 

And wait you did, never once leaving his side even though he was out for hours upon hours upon hours, only leaving to make him some breakfast and use the bathroom. You slept by his side, ate by his side, cried by his side. And once he did finally begin to stir, he had a plate of healthy food beside him and a tall glass of water. He glanced up at you, then back down at the food, then back at you before his eyes narrowed. You were both silent, but the look in his eyes spoke what his mouth would not. Finally, he swung his legs out of bed and got up, reaching for the sword he had hanging on the back of his door. You roughly grabbed his arm and forced him back down into bed, shocking him by your strength. “Felix Hugo Fraldarius. You’re not leaving this damn bed.” Your eyes met his, and as soon as he saw the fire ripping through your eyes, he closed his mouth and sat back. He’d never seen you this intense before, and he could also see the tears brimming in your eyes. 

“(Y/N), I have to train. You know this.” He objected. Stubborn. Stubborn asshole!

“You also need to take care of yourself. Felix, please. You just slept for, like, 12 hours straight. You’ve lost so much weight, you need to bathe, you need to rest. Please. Just for today.” You took his hand, squeezing it ever so softly in your hand, feeling around the calluses on his palm. He opened his mouth to object, but seeing the broken look on your face and the tears streaming down your cheeks, he couldn’t just brush you off and get up. He loved you more than that, even if he hadn’t been acting like it for a while, so wrapped up in his training. You were his soft spot. He let out a sigh, picked up some food, and was able to choke it down. 

Relief flooded through you at that. He was going to eat. Going to rest. Going to recharge and stop taking everything so seriously. You excused yourself to the bathroom under the guise of running him a warm bath to take the ache off his muscles, but the whole time you got the water ready, you were sobbing to yourself. You were still so worried about him. So afraid that he would continue down this path of self destruction. What if something happened to you on the battlefield, and he was left on his own? What would he do? Would he work himself to death like he’d been doing the past few weeks? Felix took his bath as you washed his clothes and when he came out and got dressed, you couldn’t help but wrap him in a tight hug and tackle him down on the bed. 

“Promise me you’ll start taking care of yourself. Please.” You whispered. He closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into his chest. He smelled like himself again, a mix of lavender and spice. Felix sighed, burying his face in your hair. If it hurt you this badly, how could he just continue down this path? 

“I promise. I… I’m sorry.” He whispered. How you brought this prideful, mulish man to apologize to you is beyond me, but you were definitely his soft spot. He cared for you so much he was willing to put down the pride and agree with you for once.

You two laid there for quite a while until you both fell asleep, wrapped in each other’s arms and the comfort of each other’s company. He’d forgotten how nice it felt to have a full belly, a warm bed, and the arms of his lover wrapped around him, keeping him safer than he’d ever felt.

Hey love! Question time: what do u think Aemond is attracted to in a partner? Like what would defo catch his eye (heh pun intended)? And what would he do about it, how do u think he would act when catching feelings for someone and developing a relationship?

I don't imagine that Aemond formulates an ideal partner in his head and looks for that. I think with experience he on the spot filters what he likes and doesn't like, but most of the relationship would develop through forced proximity through something like an arranged marriage. I can go into more detail.

what would catch his eye (first glance):

based on the traits we for sure know Aemond he would ideally want someone who his family approves of, so high social status would immediately catch his eye

deeper into the relationship is where he finds what he truly needs in a partner

what would he do about it:

the idea of Aemond being smooth and highly skilled in everything, but romance appeals to me most (selfishly)

he's one upping some of the best swordsmen in King's Landing (eg. Criston Cole), but would absolutely fumble trying to woo a lady

when catching feelings for someone:

as soon as Aemond realizes he's catching feelings for someone it's a big "oh gosh! oh no! what have i done!", but you'd never spot it underneath that stoic veneer

when his person of interest comes in proximity to him he's ignoring them for dear life

they'd assume he's uninterested except when they'd sneak a glance at him they'd find he's already looking at them

it would happen so often that at some point they both couldn't continue to ignore it

developing a relationship:

I think the fandom has come to the consensus that once Aemond finds the person he loves there's almost nothing he wouldn't do for them. He's an extreme guy.

in terms of actually developing the relationship, aemond would need someone who has the patience and understanding for his intensity and who makes an effort to learn why he acts the way he acts

his own efforts in developing the relationship would feel cold at first, but once he has done some warming up and found someone who gets him it would be a successful relationship

I have to disagree with anon! I think there is good cause for my boy to have major-self esteem issues and bouts of self-loathing. In this essay I will-

Just kidding! But there’s some things that I want to point out. One: he was bullied throughout his entire childhood. Anyone who has been bullied knows that shit will follow you through your whole life, and quite often people with traumatic childhoods hide their pain into adulthood with confidence/coldness (especially Scorpios 😅 he’s a scorpio king through and through).

Next: All of his problems wouldn’t have magically been solved immediately after claiming Vhagar, but the loss of his eye only fuels that. He said it was a fair trade because he gained a dragon, but it’s really not, even if it is the last dragon of the conquest (also, he was a child when he said that, who had no clue the future issues losing an eye would cause him down the line, and wanted to comfort his mother). Losing an eye/having any disability is a big fucking deal in Westeros. It’s a big deal in our world too, don’t get me wrong - but life in Westeros is much crueler than ours. We as readers/viewers sometimes tend to look at this content with a modern lens, which is something we cannot do. In this world, he is lucky to be a prince. He can study and train all he wants, best the greatest swordsmen in all the seven kingdoms, but no matter how incredible he is, all of his potential will always be followed by ‘if only he hadn’t lost that eye’. “Imagine how much greater a warrior he would be if he had both eyes” (even though he beats Cole in the training yard with relative ease). “You have an unmarried son? Oh, but he’s missing an eye” (even though he is very obviously Valyrian and the Valyrians are all certified hotties). I wouldn’t say he’s repulsed by himself, but that the resentment over what happened to him is a big motivator for everything he does and becomes.

It makes perfect sense that he isn’t aware of how handsome he is, but I disagree that he doesn’t think much about how he looks. he is certainly not vain, but he does keep a very tidy appearance. His hair and hands are always clean, his clothes fit him well and he is just extremely well put together, something he probably learned from Alicent (queen of dying on the inside but slaying on the outside). One could argue that he only does this as it is expected of a man of his station, but Aegon exists.

It’s unfortunately realistic for the setting that almost noble ladies would be scared of him. The eyepatch is one thing, but his demeanour is described and shown as quite haunting as an adult (which just makes me EVEN MORE sad because he seemed like a very sweet child). He doesn’t strike me as the kind of man who would make the first move personally either, which would make finding someone to share his life with even more difficult. A lady who is unafraid of him would be rare, and for her to be that way, it’s likely she had been dealt her own cruel hand in life as well (I’m currently writing my own work where this is the case - not trying to self plug but 🤠). Someone who he could melt into in private, share his worst fears and thoughts with, allow them to touch his scars… I feel like he would cherish that greatly and want to protect that part of his life as well as he possibly can.

When he has the confrontation with his brother, where Aegon says he’ll run away so he may have the throne, you can see the cogs turning afterwards. I think he was quite sad in that moment, tormented by the ‘if only’ nature of his life. Yes, he does deserve the throne, but that doesn’t matter. He was not born to rule, Aegon was.

Sorry this was kind of a ramble, but I have a lot of thoughts because he’s such an interesting, beautifully tragic character. Let me know what you think!

Aemond was absolutely bullied throughout his childhood, he was ganged up on by the other boys and I think the only person his age (who we know of) that wasn't mean to him was Helaena.

He had enough gumption, however, to claim the largest dragon in Westeros. To me, that takes no small amount of self-esteem, like "yeah, I deserve this". He received little to no attention/instruction/guidance from his father, instead I believe Cole filled that role. Aemond knows his prowess in sword fighting and carries himself with confidence accordingly. The man has swagger, I don't think by any means he loathes himself. Absolutely he is made to feel as less of a man because he is missing an eye, but literally everything he does is to make up for that (as you said).

As far as his appearance goes, let me explain better. Aemond takes pride in the traits he inherited that define him as a Targaryen. His silver hair, he takes excellent care of and grows long (like "see I am a legitimate heir") He takes care of himself, of course, but he has been given no reason to see himself as a particularly handsome man. Quite the opposite, as I am sure court whispers speak mainly of his missing eye and what horror may lie beneath the eyepatch. But yes, he does slay just like his mama. He is royalty, after all, and (once again) takes a GREAT amount of pride in his heritage (notice the dragon pins he wears on each of his outfits). Which also speaks to a certain amount of self-confidence.

Note also how Aegon is the opposite, he takes no pride in his appearance (the actor actually pointed this out too haha) or his Targaryen ancestry.

There is much nuance to Aemond's character (especially now with the show), and I certainly agree that he may have feelings of self-doubt, frustration, insecurity, but he uses these emotions to fuel himself to do better, train harder, study more...mold himself into the man he perceives his family needs.

hello just wanted 2 drop by and say that over the course of the past month ive marathoned the entirety of rotmhs comic and up to latest novel ch translation and its been Such a fun journey thank u for advocating for it !!! I tend to burn out on rly action-focused stuff but both the comic and the novel have such a unique way of going abt it that I couldnt stop till finishing both,,,, Ik its been said a billion times but it genuinely is one of the funniest stories ive ever read like I was wheeze-laughing in front of my ma over it at points its such a delight<3 And while I adore the comic and cannot wait to see how it handles everything upcoming the novel rly truly stunned me with how emotionally hard-hitting it gets bc yeah its mainly sillay times and cartoon violence and scheming plotting but the little glimpses scattered thruout of how deeply the world was impacted by the war chung myung lived thru and how absolutely vital martial arts are to him and how others r inspired by him(whether thru his own willpower or just beating the hell out of them lol).. its genuinely whiplash-inducing and im in awe of it a bit. Also think its incredible how even tho the cast gets So Large everyone feels so vibrant and refreshing and almost everybody gets their own moment 2 shine and show off how theyre growing or changing their viewpoint (my faves so far have been Baek Cheon(he is like a baby alligator to me I love him sm) and Yoon Jong(his whole thing during the Nanman arc is Incredible) and Yu Yiseol(my favorite girlie in the world whos backstory Gets me sobad) and way more besides but I will digress 4 now...... Anyways! Apologies for the essay but tysm again and feel free to take this as extra testamonials to anyone considering giving rotmhs a shot u shant regret it♡

Hmm, if series count as one? Definitely Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware Novels (are they good? No. But they"re comfort food. And there's like almost 40 of them.), maybe Michael Scott's The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series (i've been wanting to reread those for a while, reread the second one a while ago and remembered how much I just... don't remember the later books) and maybe the Inkworld series because it's on my mind right now. (Or just. The entire Drei Fragezeichen Reihe. That would be entertainment for a quite a while xD)

So. Many. 90% of everything I read as a child/teen was purely by accident because it depended entirely on what our little library stocked xD I think I'll say Lycidas by Christoph Marzi, because that definitely rearranged my brain and I only checked it out because someone had written "read it! It's worth it!" (Or something similar. I actually own that exact copy (thank you, library sales!) but it's in my bedroom and i'm in the living room and i'm lazy) on the first page.

Okay, 1. Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. Fake-medieval setting, complicated borderline toxic gays, intrigues, swordsmen, lords & ladies, Alec and Richard being The Most. 2. the Fetch Phillips series by Luke Arnold. Noir detective meets... the Mirrorworld from Cornelia Funke's Reckless, after the magic... ran out. Just. A classic fantasy world in which magic just stopped working (well. it was stopped. but i'm not going to spoiler.) and how the world deals with both that and the possibility of the magic returning. And 3. ...hm. maybe L.A. Confidential by James Ellroy, a crime thriller set in the 40s, which is so intensely thought through - a bit like the Knives Out movies in the sense that absolutely nothing is by accident. Every word and scene is important, even if you don't realize it at first.

really though i love the way he uses his arm warmers to move the thread and change the needle's direction midair because it implies they're made of something really densely knit, like kevlar, and are armor themselves. not to mention it's just cool as hell

ok but headcanons bc we've basically covered everything canon

so, there are two ways to think about "the heartless duo" who murdered their loved ones: they did it for purely their own gain (or because they were assholes) or because Fuguki put them up to it, and instead of it breaking their trust like killing the cypher division did to Kisame, they just let it become part of their lore. they're cool with it, is what i mean. somehow these two are uniquely evil despite zabuza and kisame's crimes and ameyuri's constant talk of hunting people (not counting fuguki here because it's unclear how many crimes he directly committed and how much anyone knew about them)

i do love the kurirares were giants theory, bc i like a kiri in which everyone is a little monstrous and the islands are haunted by spirits and critters. i have a kushimaru grandma design (though she's not literally her grandma, more like a distant ancestor that's still kicking around due to magic reasons). they're not close but she likes to see him once in awhile.

do i think kushimaru and jinpachi were boyfs. yes. for fun. i think all the swordsmen were dating each other to some degree other than the tiny guys ofc

speaking of tiny guys ameyuri is Pissed Off at how tall kushimaru is and has started fights for no other reason but that. kushimaru thinks it's endearing

ameyuri is also kind of their darling. jinpachi n kushimaru can't stay mad at her.

i kind of think about the swordsmen as ingroup/outgroup, in which fuguki, ameyuri, jinpachi, jinin, kushimaru, and mangetsu to a certain extent were the in group (the ones best suited for kiri's brutality/made it work for them rather than trying to change it) which ostracized to some extent the out group, consisting of zabuza, kisame, juzo, and raiga, who Were Not Cool with how kiri was and eventually left to do their own thing. does that mean i think the in group was purely loyal to kiri? no, they were all working more for their own gain than that of kiri (shizuma's a lot like them in that lol) but it's not like they would willingly move anywhere else.

and to the point, the in group was fairly close with the other members (other than probably fuguki.) they were besties, they were worsties. sometimes they kissed.

and having said that, let's talk about kushimaru's mask and how having a visible scar seems to not be something they do in kiri, they cover that shit up, making me think that a) kushimaru has scars on her face and b) it's a huge deal when he decides to show people. not much kissing done by this one

eating around other people too was a Thing. not that much of a thing, because people acknowledge that you gotta eat even if you're showing your scars, but she just lifted the mask over his lips and that left him completely blind which wasn't all that fun

also i have a crack headcanon that she can only see out of one eye, just because i wanted her to mirror jinpachi

how did he get these scars? getting kidnapped and uh. t&i'd during the hunter nin years. if there was any part of her that was loyal to kiri over herself that died after that event, especially because it trapped him permanently behind a mask in social settings. in protest of this, she shows as much skin as possible, which isn't all that much because kiri is Fucking Cold but still more than 95% of non-hozuki kiri denizens

i don't know what her childhood was like im going to be honest, it could have been any number of things but that's not my area of headcanons

a little bit about kushimaru in my various aus:

in fashion au he's the co-owner of the pirate lolita fashion brand Deeps and wears ouji.

in furry au she's a hybrid of a manta ray and a barn owl (the former because of the vibes, the latter because of the mask-like shape of the face and the overall creepy look this creature pair would produce.) he works at a nightclub with the rest of the swordsmen, the only other one that has a species is jinpachi who's a wobbegong

i want to talk about skater au but that one is so just. brainrot based exclusively that i don't know if i can articulate what's going on there

THEIR PUPPET THING IS HOWEVER VERY INTERESTING their best known one is "sasori of the red sand", a renowned puppet master who went missing when he was around 16. most of the current puppet designs were actually credited to him!! some other users include lady chiyo, an elder who's been a puppet master for many, many years- she's actually the leader of the "puppet brigade", which iirc is what the puppet unit was known as :) finally we have kankuro, he's in the main generation, middle child extraordinaire. he's fun though. love him

the other thing with puppets is that they often are created with poison- so all of the above are very skilled poison experts. depending on the puppet style, they have senbon with poison that shoot at you, trap their users inside of them, are just laced in general, etc. very cool

HIDDEN MIST so they were most likely the starting place the akatsuki, the criminal organization formed mostly of rogue ninja/missing nin (ninjas who abandoned their villages and went rogue or went missing. obviously), and theyre also where the seven swordsmen come from- technically.. there are a lot more than seven, bc of all the inheriting etc etc, but GENERALLY they all have really unique swords and a crazy high reputation :)

Yeah it was known as the "bloody mist" as if you'd like to advance in your ninja career, you must kill every last one of your other classmates for your exam! the other kids who you spent so many years with. so it's a bit... much. high expectations. there was also a lot of drama going on with one of the former mizukages, rumours of him being.. controlled....? oh my. cant say much though :)
