I wanna know what the calling feels like.

I can't remember if it was ever described in canon minecraft diaries but holy shit it is talked about so much, especially regarding Laurance.

I feel like there's definitely some sort of pain involved, whether it be emotional or physical. There's some need to kill the one you protect with your life, so pain is necessary, especially in Laurance's case.

He loves Aphmau so much, yet is forced to leave because HE. HAS. TO. KILL. HER.

I feel like it burns. I think Shadow Knights and fire are so related. Sasha was literally reborn from lava. I know that they are for the most part "undead," but look at Laurance. He never died. He was transformed in a different way. And Alexis (for the time that she was an SK).

I want to be able to sympathize with Laurance, and Sasha, and other Shadow Knights who haven't answered the calling. I want to know why Vincent went through with it.

I want to know more about Zenix, one of the youngest SK's we've met, and the kind of pressure it puts on a teen. The kind of headspace you have to be in to rationalize murder, especially when you're that young and impulsive.

I could literally talk about Shadow Knights for hours, they are such an intriguing part of Minecraft Diaries.

Good Morning council it’s been a while

I wanted to talk more specifically about what happens to certain SK characters after Shad’s eventual death, as well as the difference between premature and full shadow knights. i never really got around to this so i figured now is as good a time as any.

Ok first and foremost, full SKs:

I know some of you had liked the idea of full SKs dropping dead once and for all after Shad’s death, and at first I did too. But then I got to thinking. Technically speaking, they’d already earned their immortality. Yes the rest of their SK abilities were lost, but I like to think they remain immortal, a final gift of sorts from Shad due to their loyalty. Only issues? Well first off, they’re immortal, not invisible. They can still die, they just don’t age. Second, unlike PMSKs, they don’t have half a soul. They have no soul. They’re essentially walking husks of their former selves. They’re basically zombies, wandering the earth aimlessly, with one goal. Finishing their task. For most, like Gene, their task is fulfilling Shad’s wishes. Ie, killing Aphmau and her gang. So, if you were to approach them they’d be extremely aggressive, even if you had nothing to do with Aphmau. These guys would eventually need to be rounded up, they’re too dangerous to be left alone.

As for the few full SKs that weren’t loyal to Shad, (Vincent, Zenix, and Sasha) they’d also be husks, but they’d be non violent (Zenix… for the most part). I’m sure the Phoenix Alliance would probably try to find a cure for them, though I’m sure that’s unlikely.

Then we have the 2 PMSKs that actually died and were resurrected, Vylad and my oc Eseryt (i’m counting her bc she’s canon is my rewrite). Now the only reason they aren’t walking husks is because they never gained their immortality and thus still have the other half of their souls. Only thing is, half a soul has a tough time piloting a body alone. And so, they remain motionless and cold. Not dead, but comatose. Though they’re minds are very aware, moving a million miles a minute, panicking probably. They can very faintly hear and feel the things around them, but it’s muffled and far away. Eventually Eseryt is awoken by being given Kul’Zak’s relic (i’m sorry it’s not vylad 😬), the reason this works is because A) Eseryt is Kul’Zak’s incarnation and B) that relic contained a fragment of Zak’s soul, which was then bestowed upon Es. She’s awake, but less of herself, though not much less of a person, she now has more soul than most SKs.

Now Vylad is different. In order to wake him they needed to travel to the Yggdrasil Forest and convince the elder and council to left them have a sapling. This was very hard to do. The only real reason they eventually gave in was because these people had just vanquished the one thing that was a threat to all of them. Anyway, a ritual is preformed and Vylad awakens, also less of himself. He goes on to live a semi normal life, but one night while in a bout of sleeplessness, he unknowingly admits to Garroth that he wishes they wouldn’t have wasted the sapling on him and that he wished they would’ve just killed him. This absolutely shatters Garroth.

And on that cheery note! Laurance!

Now Laury is different. Not only was he premature, but he also never actually died. He was just transformed. Meaning, his body never needed to be resurrected. In the beginning he falls unconscious just like the others, but eventually he wakes up on his own. Though it is a slow process, taking weeks maybe even months for him to get back on his feet. When he first wakes he doesn’t know what’s happening. He’s feverish and scared and barely conscious. Eventually the fever leaves him and he’s left feeling like less of himself. More numb than usual. And he has to come to terms with the fact that he can hardly see or walk, that he’ll never guard again, and that his closest friends the past couple of years are both on their deathbeds and no one knows how to save them (he wakes up quite a bit before vylad and es). His only solis is that he’s finally with Aph and Garroth again, and he can finally meet his daughter.

You know you keep acting this feral about Gene and it's gonna be pretty obvious who you are, Foot Anon. I'm just saying.

Anyways for Skinny Jeans size L, I'm just gonna get this out of the way, MCD Gene is bisexual and you can pry this headcanon from my cold dead blood encrusted hands. Before the whole Shadow Knight thing, he was flirting with basically anyone. Dante didn't see if because he was really careful to make sure his brother didn't know what was going on with him.

In fact, Gene hid a lot from his brother. He knew that Dante saw him as a role model, and despite being the worst role model ever of all time, he at least tried to hide his nefarious behaviors from his younger brother. It didn't always work, but Gene got very good at climbing in and out of windows, he was an incredibly fast runner, and he was very very good at lying his way out of sticky situations.

All of this made it easy to become the head guard. He barely even tried. Gene is always looking for a challenge. He does stupid dangerous shit because life is so boring, so monotonous, he has to find some way of making it entertaining. And he has the magic to literally fuck with people's memories, why not have fun with it?

This is why he doesn't actually mind being a shadow knight too much. He didn't fight the calling because he was waiting for an excuse, and he pushed Dante to his breaking point because he wanted a challenger that would be motivated enough to finally beat him. Might as well make it interesting and make it his own brother, amirite? Gene likes the extra power because it means he can explore more fucked up ideas, but it does have the downside of making things even easier for him than they were.

Gene is the strongest out of all the Shadow Knights. You will not be changing my mind about this. While Gene and Zenix fight a lot, half the time they don't even finish the fight because Zenix is clearly losing and Gene spares him, largely to piss him off. Gene likes fighting Zenix because Zenix is one of the few people who makes Gene's mostly still heart start beating, he makes him feel a rush of life and adrenaline, he loves fighting for his life so much.

Like I said in my SK headcanons post, I think Sasha is one of Gene's favorite people. After so much lying, killing, and manipulating, it's hard for him to connect with people. Hell, he actively fucked around with Sasha's memories, but she doesn't hold much ill will towards him for it honestly. Neither one of them care much about it in the grand scheme of things, and more often than not Gene will think of Sasha very fondly. When she escapes from the Nether, he actually kind of misses her and their long talks.

Gene and Sasha fucked, is what I'm saying.

Small Character Dump for my fic

As of Chapter 8

THE JURY

Zane is still a little fucker. He is still power hungry, and insanely manipulative. However, he is now the second youngest in the Jury, meaning he has a MASSIVE chip on his shoulder. Also, he earned the position of High Priest by studying, and is the YOUNGEST in the cities HISTORY to gain it. Meaning manz is smart as fuck. I need more studious Zane in my life.

The Upper Four (Ivan, Jeffory, Janus, Katelyn) have been in the jury together for a few years now, so they are all basically siblings. Granted, they mainly hate each other, but they are brothers in arms. Only they can fuck each other over.

Zero is essentially Ivans minion. The boy never leaves his side unless he is specifically ordered to. And he is near emotionless. Idk why but I lowkey love this unfeeling bastard.

The Lower Four (Zero, Ruby, Lilian, Clas) are extremely separated from each other. Where the Upper Four are the siblings who hate each other with a burning passion, the Lower Four are essentially the cousins that play nice at family gatherings only to never speak once they go home.

The Jury really is just hanging on by a thread. Sometimes the Jury is a tight nit band of soldiers who would get along great, but others are this close to imploding on themselves and possibly causing a civil war. This jury is the latter.

Basically every single Juror has some form of trauma, the majority of it being religious. They literally were separated from society for a few months and forced to take in magical abilities their bodies weren't supposed to have. And O'khasis is a HEAVILY religious city.

THE SHADOW KNIGHTS

Gene has Delfina and Zenix under his command in the General Army, yet they both constantly threaten his authority. By that, I mean they are the only two who will OUTRIGHT call him a dumbass in front of everyone. Usually it doesn't end well.

Zenix is for some reason eternally in his teenage dirtbag phase in the worst way possible. He always has an attitude, and is basically a chihuahua: way to loud for way to long despite his size. He is actually really smart, but if you try to give the solution to world hunger via a string of fuck yous and death threats, no one will listen. They'll just be annoyed.

Vylad and Laurence are probably the most caring of the main Shadow Knights I have in here. And the saddest. They have their ways of not giving in to the idea of taking revenge on the Surface, meaning they constantly carry a sense of guilt.

Ok but like genuinely, Laurences arc to becoming a SK is fascinating? And I honestly really like it? I feel like if you take out "Aphmau was his reason for not loosing his sanity", he'd still have the fortitude to not give in and maintain his sanity. He'd just be extremely broken.

Also Laurence gets to keep his long orange hair because I say so. One of these men need to take one for the team and have hair longer than their shoulders.

For some reason, once I started looking more into the backstories for the SKs, I forgot that they all had died and Shad gave them their revenge arcs. I forgot just how much angst this group had. Whoops.

Also Sasha and Laurence knew each other and i completely forgot?? H O W ???

MS Aphmau friendship dynamics are so special to me.

• Garroth and Aaron - SLEEPOVERS

You know how at sleepovers typically you gossip with your friends about stuff that’s going on? Yeah that’s them. They talk SHIT!! Ein? Shit talk. Michi? Shit talk. Ivy in Highschool? SHIT. TALK. And they do all of this over movies and lots of food. Sometimes if the gossip is REAL good they’ll kick Aphmau/Laurance & Zane (depends on where it is) out of the house. Is Aaron shit talking kinda out of character? Maybe. But that’s what makes this a fun idea. The scary, quiet, werewolf guy is shit talking.

Aaron has been tempted to put a pillow over Garroths face when he snores really loud though.

• Aphmau and Lucinda - Magic Users

The goddess descendant and a witch? This screams magic. Before Starlight Aphmau was always interested in magic, so she would go over to Lucinda’s and watch her work when allowed since she found the process so fascinating and Lucinda has no issue with it! Most of her magic fails drive people away so knowing that someone who has definitely fallen victim to these magic fails still comes back to watch her? And is INTERESTED in it?? Amazing honestly.

• Dante and Sasha - Brother/Sister from another Mother

Very random I know but LISTEN- Both of them spent a huge amount of time with Gene and Zenix. Dante ofc growing up with Gene. Zenix being one of Genes best friends, I’m sure Dante has spent a good amount of time with Zenix too. Sasha met Zenix and Gene a little after the first few days of Highschool, and thus blossomed their friendship (and the SK’s). So both of them had the opportunity to talk about Gene and Zenix, mainly about their day-to-day lives with them. Usually they’re discussing this as Gene and Zenix are fighting, and eventually Sasha and Dante will sneak off to coffee together or something. But due to their personalities, when they’re hanging out it’s basically like Sasha’s watching a child. She’s preventing Dante from going up and talking to every pretty girl he sees and occasionally has to stop him from going to Build A Bear or other fun store. Not that she doesn’t want to go but they literally should not be wasting so much money on things they do not need.

Shadow Knight Talk

God I have got to come up with a better name shadow knights is so freaking edgy

SKs are really confusing in the series when it comes to design. It’s suggested that full SKs have permanently red eyes, but the only ones that’s actually true for are Zenix and Vincent. Gene, Sasha, and Zane never change eye color, and Vylad and Laurance seem to transform the same way, even though Laurance is a halfing (my own name for an incomplete SK) and Vylad seems to be a full SK (pretty cold and logical throughout the series, compared to mystreet)

So here’s my take on them!

In my version Shadow Knights prey on those who fear death. While they’re technically dead during the ritual, those being transformed have a “light at the end of the tunnel” moment where they can choose to pass on or accept the transformation. This fear can obviously have a variety of motivations behind it. It could be a “hey wait I wasn’t done being evil yet”, or an “I still have so much of the world to see”, or even a “there are still people that need me”, but either way, that unwillingness to accept fate, that denial, is a key motif in my shadow knights.

You don’t need to kill to become a full SK, just return to the nether and declare loyalty to their cause. The issue is that being a shadow knight is the ultimate self fulfilling prophecy. Even if they manage to escape the nether Halfings eventually become unstable and lash out at those around them, which either causes them to be rejected by their communities or isolate themselves to keep others safe. This isolation of course only makes things worse, they’re still effectively human, they need human connection for healthy functioning. The depression and self-loathing eventually reaches a point where they’ll do anything to feel like they have a purpose. And guess who’s waiting in the nether to give them that purpose?

SKs don’t lose their emotions like it’s suggested in the series (honestly they didn’t follow that rule anyways) but they gain conscious control of their SK form. Also the fact that they’ve rejected all their past relationships and are choosing to follow a shadow army kind of makes them act differently on its own.

I think I’ll do some differences between full SKs and halfings (duller red eyes for full SKs and maybe a darker armor design) but I want to keep things simple. Halflings have their natural eye color until they enter their shadow knight form, where they turn red. Full SKs have permanently red eyes, though they brighten when they enter their SK form. There are items similar to concealment stones in my story, so full SKs can hide their eye color relatively easily. All SKs, full or halfing, are forced into their SK form in the nether, though halflings are able to keep control while in the nether.

Also I just kind of got bored with the veiny eye look of the series’s shadow knight forms, especially with Laurance. It always looked weird with his freckles, they just layered on top of each other really weird. So I thought it’d be fun to give each SK their own unique eye markings.

Zane

*note Zane is very different in my story and gets a redemption, so if anything goes severely against canon that’s on purpose.

Our newest shadow knight, and second youngest physically. After being put in limbo in Irene’s dimension, he is found when the SKs come to retrieve Aaron. Sensing the weakness in Zane, they transform and imprison him. During one of Laurance and Zenix’s raids on the SK fortress Laurance frees the imprisoned halfings, though he doesn’t know Zane is in that group. Zane manages to avoid recapture and escape the nether.

He doesn’t have the best emotional control, thanks to the years spent with Garte, so he snaps and at least partially enters his form frequently, though it usually doesn’t last long.

His facial markings don’t extend to his scar, the tissue damage effectively blocks the magic flow to that area. His other eye gets a marking that mirrors his scar.

Laurance

Aw yeah, my boy.

Laurance sacrifices himself in the nether to make sure Aphra and Candenza could escape. He’s rescued by Ungurth, wyverns can naturally dimension hop, but he uses up his life force making sure Laurance survives the jump. The corruption from the jump destroys Ungurth and blinds Laurance, but otherwise Laurance seems unchanged until season 2, where all the stress first causes him to start slipping, eventually culminating in a big fight with Aphra and Garroth where he nearly snaps at them, and after talking with Vincent, realizes he needs to leave to keep them safe.

In season 3 he is in a tenuous alliance with Zenix in taking down the SKs, though this eventually fails and Laurance is forced to escape back to Phoenix Drop.

Along with Aaron, Laurance’s potential as a host for Shad was recognized, so both of them are targeted throughout season 2. This makes Laurance’s symptoms much worse than the typical halfing.

His markings incorporate his three freckles, as well as two stripes that frame his eyes

Vincent

Oldest character physically, and after Zenix has spent the longest time as a shadow knight. Vincent was turned a long time ago, and was a high ranking knight loyal to Shad. One day he was sent out of the nether on a mission. I don’t have it super well thought out but at some point Vincent fell in love while out of the nether and defected against Shad, living with his lover until their death. After that, Vincent swore to protect humanity from Shad in any way he could.

Not a ton of story behind his markings, but damn he looks cool

Sasha

Honestly her whole backstory needs some reworking, but overall I think she begins the series loyal to Shad but questioning his methods. She’s very active in helping her fellow SKs but often uses her own methods and frequently goes against orders. When she guides Laurance to the nether in season 2 she refuses to go in, both fearing repercussions and knowing she’d be more useful on the outside. But she is grateful to Laurance for freeing her, and says she owes him a favor, setting up a possible defection.

I don’t have her death planned out, but I imagine it was something very tragic, hence her tear-shaped markings. She was also described as doll-like in the series, so I tried to make her look sweet in an unnerving way

Gene

His backstory largely follows canon, make contact with the shadow knight, gets executed, goes through the SK ritual, all that jazz. Honestly Gene’s just not that deep of a character, he’s a power hungry guy and his loyalty to Shad never wavers.

I wanted his stripes simple but sharp, and I like that they look the most like the og series, kind of highlights the fact that gene is your standard Shadow Knight

Zenix

Youngest physically, only about 16, but a very old shadow knight, one of the earliest. Zenix was a tragic character at the beginning, he was only a kid when he was forcibly transformed. But it’s been so long it almost doesn’t matter anymore. All Zenix wants now is power. While originally loyal to Shad, he defected a long time ago, seeing Shad as weak. Now he only serves himself.

Design-wise, I wanted to contrast his monstrous actions with a soft, boyish face. His markings were softly inspired by jester stripes, again keeping a childish influence

Thinking about my rewrite:

All of the Shadow Knights (including ex-SK Laurance) know how to make their own clothes.

-Gene taught Zenix and Laurance how to make their own clothes. In fact, it’s one of the few things Laurance doesn’t regret learning/doing as his time as a Shadow Knight.

-Sasha already knew how to make her own clothes prior to joining. Of course, she ended up learning and picks up on some of Gene’s techniques.

-Sasha and Zenix ended up being the ones teaching Vylad how to make their own clothing.

-Not a SK, but thanks to Gene, Dante does know how make his own clothes and eventually he ended up teaching Travis as well.

I like to headcanon JO9 transformations prioritizes different proficiencies depending on the individual: strength and speed for Katelyn, agility for Ivy, strength and tankiness for Garroth, tankiness for Jeffory, magicks and speed for Lillian, strength for Janus. I don’t want Zane’s transformation to be a JO9 form .. I think it’s kind of silly for a priest to have an official battle form. instead it’s his homebrewed relic-magicks transformation he devised as a last resort

Shadow knight forms enhance strength based on the individuals emotions, kind of depends on how much the Shadow Lord likes you and/or how loyal you are to him (Laurance is not loyal at all but Shad likes the cut of his jib.
