concept: severitus fic (i used to snort those like crack) where harry and james are indian bc im indian and i say so. when sev adopts harry after james and lily's deaths, he finds a bunch of old journals and cookbooks and kids mythology books etc of james' and despite his reservations about james reads them so he can better understand how to raise harry without him usffering a disconnect from his heritage. told through present perspectives and the old books, we get to watch sev, james, harry, lily and everyone grow up two decades a part.
also there has to be at least one mention in the old journals of james in his first year freaking the fuck out because WHY WOULD YOU SAY CHAI TEA?!?! CHAI MEANS TEA WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS WHITE PEOPLE SHIT anyway snapes hair looks extra greasy today i want to help him wash it bUT NOT IN THE GAY WAY I SWEAR THE ONLY MAN I WANT TO KISS IS SIRIUS wait a fucking minute
im supposed to be revising for my bio exam this afternoon but this concept has been haunting me since i woke up this morning i cant s t o p

also ew Bio is disgusting, it’s the worst Science and y’all can’t tell me otherwise. I advise you to procrastinate as much as you possibly can <3 (jk jk you better start studying or else 11 year old Lily and I will be very disappointed in you ☝🏼)
P.S. I’m saying Lily instead of James or Sirius bc I know damn well those fuckers don’t give a shit about their tests 😭

So, when I searched Snape stan you were one of the first blogs to appear and by investigating *coughs* stalking *coughs* for a while *coughs* 15 minutes *coughs* I have decided to submit a fic idea that has been there for a while. I have absolutely no intention on writing it but I want it to be out there in the world.
It may already be, I'm not gonna lie it's pretty basic.
So I want a severitus fic where Jilly is very much alive.
Like, the war happened, but Neville is the boy who lived in this universe. Snape still works for Dumbledore as a teacher and he hates being surrounded by dunderheads all the time.
Harry on the other hand had a much better childhood than the one at the Dursleys. But there are still things.
Lily's fiery right, that translates into a bit of an anger problem when parenting because she usually doesn't have the patience for Harry's major kid fuck up's. So, controversial opinion, she beats him. Hear me out, it's the 80's, people beat their children for discipline today too, imagine what it was like in the 80's when it was actually considered a good thing.
James, on the other hand, I imagine as materialistic, always getting Harry stuff and not understanding that all Harry wants in a hug and "I am proud of you!". So, naturally he gets mad at Harry because he doesn't understand his point of view and of course Harry learns that there are consequences to not being happy all of the time.
So, we have emotional issues wrapped up in a trenchcoat pretending to be a "spoiled" 11 year old.
This mess of a person gets to Hogwarts, proceeds to gain a reputation as the class clown, because he's always happy and is really upset about it, thinking that's a bad thing.
Severus finds him crying in a hallway after his friends start calling him the class clown and comforts him.
What happens after is up to you I think.
I didn't plan this far. I was honestly thinking of Harry accidentally becoming a horcrux, by accidentally absolving the horcrux in the diary in second year. You decide how.
Personally I was thinking he was the one the diary took and when the stealing of magic began, Tom started to feel a little woozy.
O
M
G
I LIKE THIIISSSSSSSS
The fact that you scrolled through my chaotic blog and thought “yea…he’s the one I wanna tell this to” is amazing 🥲
I like the idea that the events of the second book happened to Harry instead of Ginny 🤔
And I never thought about the normalized discipline in that era…🤯 I feel like the roles would be opposite tho. Considering what we see in canon, I think James would be the one to get fed up and result to whooping and Lily is the parent who lets it happen and compensates by doing the bare minimum and expecting you to “be grateful” because “others have it worse”
Aw man, I already thought of an ending…angst beyond repair
😩
I have too many WIPs, I have too many WIPs, I have too many WIPs, I have too many WIPs, I have too many WIPs, I have too many WIPs…

Harry Potter || Yuri On Ice || Miscellaneous
WIP Lily’s Thorn || Rating: Teen || Pairing: Drarry || Harry starts experiencing physical changes two days before the Final Task of the Triwizard Tournament. He doesn’t think anything of it until his fifteenth birthday when the changes escalate and he receives a letter from his mother that will change his life forever. || Tags: Severitus, Enemies to Friends to Lovers || FFN
Disillusioned || Rating: Teen || Pairing: Harry/Daphne || Harry’s fourth year has not been going according to plan, and Harry blames a lot of it on the Slytherins in his year. While venting one day, Daphne Greengrass sticks up for the other Slytherins in their year. This makes Harry think a lot about her and what she meant, as he wonders if he can trust her. || FFN
From Beyond the Viel: Words to Those Whom I Love || Rating: General || Pairing: implied Wolfstar, Harry & Sirius || This is a poem written by Sirius to the two people who were most important to him. || Tags: Canon Character Death || FFN
Meeting The Family || Rating: Explicit || Pairing: Snarry || Harry had been surprised to find out that Severus had muggle relatives stemming from his womanizing muggle father. He was even more surprised to find out, when accompanying Severus for the first time to one of their monthly "family meetings," just how much family his lover had exactly. || Tags: Established Relationship, Slice of Life
Opus Heros || Rating: Explicit || Pairing: Snarry || The Resistance has no other choice but to use a powerful ritual to call upon a hero to defeat Voldemort, despite Severus’s skepticism. The young man they get, Harry Potter, is ragged and war-torn; not willing to fight their war for them, having just managed to complete his own. With no way back though, at least for the moment, Harry and his friends are forced to stay. For Harry, the only one who seems to make any sense is Severus Snape, a man he’s never met. || Tags: Angst and Fluff and Smut, Strangers to Lovers
The Contract Series

HP Cest Fest 2023: Week 1 ☕️
📖 Sweet Victory | E | 5,000 Bill Weasley/Charlie Weasley/Victoire Weasley
Bill can't bring himself to despoil his virgin daughter. He begs a favour from Charlie to help.... er, pave the way. But can he see it through?
📖 come softly to me | E | 2,100 Orion Black/Regulus Black
Regulus is finally old enough to experience one of the famous Black family parties. The guests are wild, and the firewhisky is stronger than Regulus anticipated. Dazed and greedily aroused, he finds himself in a hallway in his father's company.
📖 A Merciful Alternative | E | 4,300 Lucius Malfoy/Draco Malfoy
Draco learns that there is no easy way out after his failure to kill Albus Dumbledore atop the Astronomy tower. The Dark Lord promises to humiliate the Malfoy family in every way possible before the night is through.
📖 Look Inside and Awake | E | 2,900 Severus Snape/Tobias Snape
Perhaps no one else would ever find him attractive, but as he watched his long, thin fingers drift down his abdomen, he'd never felt more beautiful.
📖 When a Fire Starts to Burn | E | 11,400 Harry Potter/Severus Snape
It's a Severitus to Snarry A/B/O, do you really need more of a hook than that? Ok, fine: Severus is stood up by an alpha for his yearly heat. Suppressants can only help so much then, and when his heat comes on with his sixteen-year-old adoptive alpha son around him, well, things happen.
📖 Three Time's a Charm | E | 774 Harry Potter/Sirius Black
He wants more than anything to be the reason for the boy's tears, and Sirius always gets what he wants…
📖 Iris | M | 6,100 Alice Longbottom/Neville Longbottom
Neville loves his mum so much. He never meant to let it get this far... or did he?
📖 Atonement | E | 5,200 Percy Weasley/George Weasley
“I’m here to pay my debt." “How could you possibly repay me? It's your fault he's dead!” Percy clasps his fists and repeats his offer, this time with the air of a supplicant begging for mercy. “Please, George. Please let me do something. I can’t watch you waste away. I’ll never forgive myself!” The breath vacates his body when George disengages the zipper of his ratty, hole-studded jeans. The teeth grind open with lewd precision, and he pops out between his flaps, flaccid and pathetic. “Suck my dick,” George smirks, challenging his brother to back down.
📖 the hands that collar you (belong to your brother) | E | 1000 Regulus Black/Sirius Black
Prompt: Power bottom!Regulus choking Sirius as he rides him, saying he’ll get him a collar next time, calling him “puppy” as Sirius whines from the pleasure he’s receiving.
📖 A Breed Apart | E | 18,400 Harry Potter/Harry Potter
In the summer following Harry’s third year of school, something strange happens. He’s at the park when all of a sudden the afternoon has turned into evening and all he can remember is a flash of green light. Before he can write to Sirius about it, someone arrives at Privet Drive with an explanation.
🎨 A Grim Bargain | E | Webcomic Orion Black/Sirius Black
The night Sirius runs away from home, he does not expect anyone to be waiting for him by the foyer. "Please. I'll do anything, so please, don't leave." Sirius considers it. "Anything?"

All the love to Severitus fans but personally I always took Harry and Snape’s relationship to be more like brothers than that of a child and parent. Two brothers caught up in the machinations of their well respected but undoubtedly eccentric father.
Snape complaining to Dumbledore about how he trusts Harry and not him even though he is the one who has been working his tail off for him, begrudging how heavily Dumbledore relies on him when he repays him by being stingy with the truth and refusing him comfort when he needs it just screams older sibling to me. He’s almost jealous of how Dumbledore pays special attention to Harry, how he trusts Harry with information that he does not trust with Severus and this is so like an eldest brother who suffered through his father’s rough handling as a child only to see how those hands have turned soft when it comes to the younger brother. Where was all this emotional intelligence and competence when I was a kid, old man? Look how easily affectionate words roll off the tongue when it comes to Harry: he tells Harry that he loves him, he apologises when he has wronged him, he comforts Harry when he is experiencing emotional upheaval. Yet he treats Severus with a cold contempt, taking his service for granted while dismissing him when he is practically pleading for reassurance or validation.
Did Dumbledore ever apologise to Severus? He was certainly entitled to an apology, many times I’d say, over the course of their relationship. Obviously the series is from Harry’s point of view so we will never get the full story but judging from the frosty tone of their conversations I somehow doubt that he has ever been as tender to Severus as he is to Harry. Some of that has to do with age I suppose, Harry is a child after all and should be treated delicately as such. But Severus was once a child too. Do you think Dumbledore would have treated Harry the way he did Severus when he was a child? Would he have covered for Harry’s bullies the way he did Severus’s? Would he have silenced Harry from speaking out against them when he nearly lost his life because of their cruelty and his indifference the way he silenced Severus? You can’t tell me that event didn’t galvanise Severus into turning away from Dumbledore and his side so it’s laughable to me that he dares to judge Severus for his mistakes. He uses Severus’s past as a leash to control and sedate him (You owe me) without so much as a thought to the part he played in pushing him toward the wrong direction. Seems awfully familiar, neglectful parent throws their son’s mistakes in his face to guilt him into helping them out without acknowledging how their own failings had a hand in him making those mistakes.
And the way Severus damn near begs for Dumbledore’s affection/validation at times makes me cringe. You trust him and not me? What of my soul, mine? You haven’t forgotten how he tried to kill me, have you? He’s practically screaming at him look at me! What about me! I’m a person too! I’m important too! And to see him denied every single time is just too much. The extent of Dumbledore’s validation to Severus is affirming his usefulness: You’ve done well, Severus. I’m fortunate to have you, Severus. Thank you, Severus. The fact that he is stricken by a throwaway comment that perhaps they Sort too soon is just blatant evidence of how starved for affection this poor bastard is.
Maybe a part of the reason he hated Harry so much stemmed from being envious of how easily he received love and validation from Dumbledore when he had to earn his with blood. Harry begins to see how similar they are toward the end of DH, how they were on parallel journeys, how he sat where Snape sat, stood where Snape stood and vice versa. Perhaps if Snape had lived they could have reconciled as siblings often do once they have spent sufficient years away from the childhood home and memories. But we’ll never really know for sure.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
thank you for tagging me @glove23!!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
- 29
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
- 556,655 (a PALINDROME!!!!!!!! omg i love palindromes what a lovely coincidence)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
- I have fics posted for harry potter, dungeons and daddies, and irondad. my current wips are for hp, irondad, and i have one atla wip that may never see the light of day based on how fast progress on it is (like… 500 words a year? if that? it’s bad)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
- How Like Home Harry Potter, Dimension travel AU, 158,008 words, incomplete
-Phoenixes are Pests Harry Potter, this one has a comic drawn by @minryll! and the entire idea for it came from her too, 1,541 words
- In Plain Sight Harry Potter, severitus AU where snape goes undercover as one of harry’s classmates and gets to know harry, 93,784 words
- Close to the Chest Harry Potter, sequel to In Plain Sight, 37,115 words
-Under Your Skin Harry Potter, severitus AU where snape takes harry’s place in an umbridge detention and gets her ousted, 26,672 words
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do my absolute best to!!! The main reason I write fanfic is because I love the community around it! But sometimes I have to choose between responding to comments or working on the fic they commented on and I get the feeling that people would prefer that I write the fic rather than respond to their comments XD
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I’m not much of one for angsty endings, I love angsty beginnings/middles, but I like to end on hope. So that being said, I do have an incredibly angsty ending that I might write for worth living for i might also go the sappy happy ending i originally had in mind. i might do both. who knows.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
since I already answered the previous one with a fic that doesn’t have an actual ending, i’ll avoid saying how like home for this one since that technically does not have an ending. instead, i’ll say This Is Our Salvation a real world-ish drarry AU that’s kinda weird but is the second fic that came to mind and not enough people have read it to be able to contradict me so yeehaw baby
8. Do you get hate on fics?
much less now that I moderate comments on how like home! but yeah I do still sometimes get it, and it’s a bummer
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
not often, but like I love the community around fanfic, and people are weird about commenting on and interacting with explicit fics so it’s just not what I gravitate towards with my extremely limited writing time these days
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
gonna combine these previous two into one because i once had someone use google translate to translate my fic into spanish and then posted it to wattpad (all without notifying me, as i request in my permissions statement on ao3) and what’s hilarious is spanish is the one language i’d be able to tell that it’s google translated rather than earnestly translated. i’ve had other people request to translate hlh to other languages, i gave them the go ahead, but as far as i can tell, nothing ever came of that
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
a couple times! the longest fic I co-wrote is no longer on my ao3 for various reasons, but I also worked with minryll on the aforementioned phoenixes are pests and @yes-i-am-happyaspie have a fic we’re co-writing that i SWEAR i will get back to!!!
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
i don’t like… go that hard for romantic ships.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i will finish all my wips i swear to god. i will be eighty fucking years old chipping away at these bitches if i must, but they WILL be finished.
16. What are your writing strengths?
introspection baby! unfortunately that means my characters are probably way more emotionally intelligent than they should be based on canon but such is life
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
summarizing. there’s a reason hlh spans like. two weeks of time. that’s because i hate summarizing when i could spell out everything that happens. and i know it’s a problem and i’m working on it!!! but like not as hard as i should because it’s hardddddd 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I haven’t really run into this issue, but hypothetically I’d need to find a confident speaker of the language to give my dialogue a pass before I’d be willing to publish it
19. First fandom you wrote for?
harry potter
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
how like home baby! it’s my pride and joy, my magnum opus, and white fucking whale that will never be over XD
i am going to tag @yes-i-am-happyaspie @ctrsara @ambpersand @gabagal @reachingforaspark @spagbol99 and that’s all i’ve got off my head even though i know i’m forgetting people

10 First Lines tagging game
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway
okay well I definitely don’t have ten and I don’t have any posted works, but I guess I can share some unposted stuff! thank you for the tag @the-francakes!! 💚
1. Somehow, in all his time fighting, Harry hadn’t given much thought to what would come after the war. Even when he had, he never thought he’d be sitting in the cold, watching dusty old ruins and missing the days spent chasing rumours of horcruxes across the country with Ron and Hermione – but that’s exactly where he found himself, sat in silence against a low wall with Ron as leaves tumbled past on an autumn breeze. [tear my heart out slow, my Tomarry time travel wip]
2. The door of Number 4 Privet Drive slammed shut behind Harry, cutting off Vernon’s demands that Harry come back and make Marge right again. He wouldn’t — she’d gotten what she deserved. Still, the satisfaction of seeing her panic did nothing to stop his hands from shaking as he dragged his trunk away from his aunt and uncle’s house. [honestly the first lines for build me no shrines (sing me no songs) are super boring. It’s a series re-write with Slytherin!Harry, some Snupin, some Regulus as Harry’s father, and a (large) sprinkle of Arthurian legend but it starts off just after Harry blows up Marge haha]
3. Peace at last. Here, away from judging eyes and expectations he could never measure up to, so far from those who could hurt him. His world was dark and cold, but it was his and he was finally, blissfully alone. [unnamed ghost!Reg fic 🥰 little ghost man just wants to be left alone but of course he gets pulled from his peaceful afterlife because I’m incapable of letting him be happy]
4. Tick tick tick tick… Pansy sat at her piano, the insistent beat droning through her body—forcing her rhythms, forcing her hands to follow. This was no romanticised, emotive, key-stroking practice session. This was war. Two different metres, two different hands, two months of work, and she still hadn’t conquered these few measly measures. [unnamed Pansmione murder-suicide fic. it’s got pianos and werewolves and extremely questionable medical practices!]
5. Remus let out a shuddering breath in the shadowed hallway of 12 Grimmauld Place. It was just a house, he reminded himself. Nothing to be scared of. [even as a shadow (even as a dream), a post-war wolfstar fic with ghost!Sirius and a haunted house]
6. Standing in front of a decrepit building that hardly deserved to be called a shack, Severus ran through a list of curses he might be able to get away with putting on Petunia. Running from wizards — really she should have known better. [unnamed little Severitus fic idea where instead of Hagrid, Snape gets sent to give Harry his letter]
none of these are posted or even finished because I’m actually allergic to finishing stories and also to putting them where people can see lol but uhhhh anyway, gonna tag @venom0usbarbie @allalrightagain @sandervansunshine @luxuriousmalfoy @lunapwrites and @black-sparroww (not ten but one for each wip anyway) hopefully I’m not tagging anyone who’s done it before!!

Ugh something that infuriates me about the marauder stans is when they say Harry should have named his second son 'Remus Regulus' or 'Rubeus Remus' or 'Regulus Remus'.
Do they not realize that Harry named his children after the people who have impacted his life in some way or another.
James Sirius- James, whom he's been compared to his entire life. Both the good and the bad. Harry's patronus takes his father's animagus form. And Sirius his Godfather who tried his hardest to be there for Harry despite his own shortcomings and short time together. He did everything for Harry (except when he ran after Peter instead of dealing with Harry but that's a different story).
Albus Severus- Albus after Dumbledore. Dumbledore (despite all the headcanons out there) who care for Harry and was sort of like a father/grandfather figure in his life. Severus after Snape. Snape who literally saved Harry's life more then we all probably realize, who used his last dying breath to give Harry the last piece of information to finish the war. (He quiet literally stopped trying to stop the blood flow once he saw Harry). On top of that remained in a spying position for 17 years. Snape also was childhood friends with his mother.
Lily Luna- Lily after Harry's mother of course. Luna isn't actually in her name to be named after Luna Lovegood. Luna means moon (in some language I don't remember and am too lazy currently to google) so Luna is essentially named for Remus.

I've been itching for awhile to argue with a Tik Tok Snater 👀. I've finally got one so let's goooo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, James didn't slay, he never did. He was canonically a bully, no matter who they're bullying it's still wrong. Second of all the whole "what sa" or "it wasn't sa" is so wrong. Because it is, it is sa. Saying it wasn't or blaming it on Snape is horrible. I'm not even going to go down the road of the victim blaming that goes on here.
"walking on a corpse to hug a dead girl he was obsessed with"
Girl- calm down. First of all that's movie canon not book canon. Even if it was book canon do you really think Snape would have stepped on James's body, stepped on him?! Like do y'all hear yourself. The man would probably slip and fall on the stairs if he had stepped on him 😂.

What are your thoughts on the fact that marauders stans are essentially taking all of Snape’s character traits and shoving them into Regulus
I love this question 👀.
Honestly it's not even the only character they've done it for.
They've taken Snape's spy position and given it to Regulus
They've taken his abuse and neglect story and given it to Sirius. (Not saying Sirius wasn't abused, he was, they just like to take Snape's story and give it to Sirius as if it's his when he himself already has an abusive childhood)
They've taken The Half Blood Prince's book and claimed it was James'
It's stupid. It's delusional. Like you claim you don't like a character and list all their faults and then give it to other characters.
They claim Snape was still a Death Eater/blood supremacist despite defecting because of Lily. He remained in a position to spy on the dark side for almost two decades of his life. And in the process he started believing in her cause. They claim it's bullshit and call him a Neo Nazi or a Wizard Nazi.
But then.
Then they turn around and say Regulus who defected for his house elf, who was a known blood supremacist, who was obsessed with Voldemort, is not a Nazi. "Regulus black was an abused boy who joined the death eaters to take him down from the inside. He was never a blood supremacist. He was in love with James Potter and was friends with all the marauders"... Like girl no.
They also claim that if Regulus was the spy and not Snape and that Regulus taught potions and was head of house he would have been nice to the students, including Harry and Neville and Hermione. No. Snape wasn't nice because the remaining death eaters wouldn't like to hear Snape playing daddy figure to the boy who lived. Or the child to both a known light family and the boy who could have been the chosen one. As well Hermione a muggleborn, need I say more? He couldn't have been nice because of his position. He would have lost it.
Don't even get me started on the whole "James is the Halfblood Prince thing" anyways I've gotten off topic.
Marauder fans/stans know Snape is amazing and badass but because he doesn't fit into their "hot/attractive" ideology he isn't worth it. So they take his entire life, his personality, his accomplishments and give it to his tormentors (not Regulus).
My final opinion is that it's far fetched and ridiculous. Regulus Black decided to defect in a single moment and when he did he died. If Voldemort hadn't used his house elf to plant his horcrux he wouldn't have known any better and nothing would have changed for him.

Severitus Headcanons, I guess (pt. 2)
Quick introduction: this is the second part of a post written more than a year ago when I was strssed for am exam because, guess what, I am now stressed for an exam. Here's the last post
As you'll also find in that post, here's the disclaimer, more or less modified.
Obviously I don't support the terf bitch, the only reason why in the year of our Lord 2023 I am writing something like this is because fantasizing about yet another fictional father-son relationship to make up for the one I lack takes the edge off my stress for exams and...well, other stuff.
I don't give a flying fuck about the Snape discourse, I don't care if he is good, bad, or in the middle, I did not write this to be accurate to the books I haven't read or the movies I hardly remember, I wrote this because it's comforting to me. So if you are personally offended by Severitus as a concept or Snape in general, don't make me part of your grudge, because I don't care for it. There are better ways to spend your time rather than insult me.
As I've made patently clear, I don't know Harry Potter that well, so if there are inaccuracies, I'm sorry. I linked my last post because these headcanons take place in the same "universe" as my last post, so you may want to read that too.
Let's begin.
Snape only uses his Legilimens ability on Harry to win at cards.
Harry only learned Occlumency to stop losing at cards (it may or may not have been Snape's purpose from the start).
"Do you have...a seven?"
"No luck. Now stop trying to get inside my head, literally."
"...you're getting better at this."
"Cards or Occlumency? I bet they go hand in hand."
"Shut up."
The hardest thing to adapt to when Harry starts Hogwarts is new boundaries. Harry and Snape have to pretend they don't know eachothers. Especially with Harry being a Gryffindor, Snape can't even use the excuse is looking out for a little Slytherin. But the necessity to protect The Boy Who Lived from all dangers hidden at Hogwarts (and the urge to look out after Harry who has a special ability in putting himself in trouble) is too strong to ignore. So now everybody thinks Snape is just really weird about Harry, he never lets him out of his sight, he is almost following him around and also they fight a lot in class. Honestly it's a bit weird to see a thirty-something years old professor have beef with an 11-year-old, but nobody dares to bring it up to Snape, they're scared of him, alright?
So the whole...turning down Draco's friendship is real pickle. Like, yes, being close to Draco, who is Lucius's son, is a bad idea because Lucius can't find out Snape is working for Dumbledore and Harry literally lives with him but also purposefully antagonize Draco Malfoy? On your first day? That's simply suicidal.
"Why did you have to be so...stubborn with him?"
"Me? I'm the stubborn one? He insulted Ron!"
"Whom had known for 2 hours then!"
"Well, I only needed to know Draco for five minutes to understand he was a bully and I am not friend with bullies."
Snape wants to reply but he is stunned for a moment. That's an admirable stance for an 11 years old. Merlin, if someone told me years ago I'd hear this coming from James Potter's son...
"It wasn't the worst decision you could have made. That was Draco Malfoy. His father, Lucius, is...a dangerous wizard. Not accepting his friendship will certainly breeds problems, but you could have hardly afford the scrutiny you would have been submitted by such proximity to the Malfoy family. You'd need to be a far more cunning Slytherin to avoid giving yourself away while making...friends with Draco, and you're a foolishly impulsive Griffindor, as we've witnessed today."
"Even if it was bad choice, I wouldn't have turned my back to Ron."
"I am well aware of that, Harry, but would you be so kind to let me believe in all the years I've brought you up I instilled some sort of Slytherin smarts in that red and gold head of yours?"
It's not fair, Severus thinks, it's really not fair. James Potter was the rich kid who strutted Hogwarts halls like he owned them and his son turned himself against an entire house not to turn his back towards a kid he met on a train. One day, Severus will have to tell Harry about his parents. He won't lie, he has never been one to sugarcoat things, but he doesn't want to tell Harry who is father truly was either. The side of James Potter people don't talk about, people turn a blind eye to, because it was just with Slytherins and everybody knows they're bad news anyway, because it was him and nobody cared if it was him. Harry doesn't deserve to know the truth, but one day he'll have to.
Harry didn't exactly took well the news (well, news to him) that Draco was Snape's godson. When Draco told him Harry couldn't believe it. He said it was joke, that he was lying. Everybody seemed to know at school. When he asked Snape for explanations, he said he "didn't want to burden him with this information", that was also "never relevant until this moment" for him. It doesn’t calm Harry down, on the contrary. He locks himself in his room. The only reason Harry doesn't fully blow a fuse is that they're at Hogwarts now. Of course, he can't tell Ron and Hermione why he is upset. Really, Draco Malfoy? Snape is his godfather? In which alternate universe? Sure, Draco is a Slytherin, but he is also pretentious, and whiny, and he is always ready to go tell his father things, and he expects to be treated like royalty by everyone and he is a bully! Snape hates all of these things, how is that even possible that he is connected to someone like Malfoy? Everytime Malfoy flaunts how being Snape's godson gives him certain priviledge, Harry wishes he'd known a spell to shut him up. And no, this isn't jealousy, it's something else that right mow he cannot name, but it's definitely not jealousy. And it's not jealousy because he knows Snape doesn't care about Draco more than he cares about him. Draco may be his godson, but Harry is his...protegè? Maybe? The exact definition of the nature of Harry and Draco relationship has been a bit foggy. Whatever, it's not important the title or anything, he knows Snape cares more about him, right?
Snape is torn between keepinp up apperances and following his heart. As disgustingly sentimental as it may sounds. Draco and Harry fight ever more than he precicted. And as head of Slytherins and Draco's godfather the only sensible behaviour for him to follow would be take Draco's side everytime, he knows that. But no one could prepare him on how hard it is, especially when Snape knows Draco is wrong, to look at Harry and call him a liar when he denies to have started the fight, an insolent and a brat. He explained him he has to do it, no one can suspect, but Harry is just a kid, of course there's hurt in his eyes when Snape says those things. He pretends to yank Harry from an arm to some classroom so he can give him a proper scolding, while the other kids who witnessed the fight chatter about the tremendous punishment Snape is going to inflict on Gryffindors' golden boy. Some of them try to subtly follow Harry and Snape, hoping to hear some of the insults the Potions teacher will throw at Potter and make gossip out of it, but Snape glare at them so hard some think it's a new kind of spell. When they're away from indescreet eyes and ears, Snape lowers himseld at Harry's level. "It's just pretend. Don't believe anything I say in front of the Slytherins and in front of Draco, especially. You're good kid, Harry." he whispers. "But I was right! It wouldn't be suspicious if you tell them I am right when I am! Draco pushed me and-" "It's not that simple, Harry." A sentence Harry will grow tired of hearing pretty soon. "And now go to your dormroom!" shouts Snape at Harry, theatrically, in front of the students who waited to catch a glimpse of Snape's rage. Snape is pretending to be be angry, but when Harry looks at him with fire in his eyes Severus knows he is not faking him.
Snape cannot stop directly Draco from harassing Harry, but he can alternative ways, after all he is a Slytherin. He opted for convincing Draco that fighting Harry Potter is a waste of time and all of the public insult matches he gets up to with Harry doesn't make him look good on his curriculum. Draco has an ego and Snape knows how to play with it. Snape does care about Draco, in his own way. He is not surprised he turned out the way he did, snobbish and egocentric and with a mean streak to him- he is after all Lucius's son and a Slytherin, you couldn't expect a Hufflepuff behaviour. But, because he knows Lucius, he can also tell that he and Draco are different. Surely Draco resembles Lucius physically, but it's clear he is putting effort into acting like his father. His meaness is not as nonchalant, one could say, as Lucius's. Snape pretends not to notice. He really did wish Draco didn't always use Harry as an assistant to prove the world he is just like his father, especially when he is better than him.
In the rare occasions Snape is forced to give Harry punishments he doesn't deserve (very rare occasions, since Harry usually breaks four rules a day)
At some point, way earlier than Snape wanted, Ron and Hermione found out Harry had been growing up with Snape. Which was weird, to say the least, but for very unexpected reasons. First of all, because for how much they argue in class you can tell they've got something personal going on, but "father-son" relationship is not what you would expect. Second, because Ron especially couldn't believe someone could ever entrust Snape with a child. When Harry told him in muggle children stories usually wizards and witches are evil and eat children, Ron thought it was about Snape. Having lived with Dursleys for a few years, though, Harry is very firm in defending Snape from accusation of being a bad guardian/parent. Snape can be hard to deal with sometimes, sure, but there's a difference between that and bad guardians, Harry knows, he's been through it. Snape doesn't deserve to be put on the same level of the Dursleys.
It's also weird that Harry and Snape live together for Ron and Hermione because it's just so much harder to hate Snape. It's not like they suddenly love him as soon as they find out he's Harry's guardian, but damn. You just cannot just things anymore. It's not even "it would be impolite in front of Harry", more often than not Harry is openly fighting Snape when he thinks he did something unfair, but because now you know Snape is not The Worst Person Alive. What is Ron suppose to say when he hets a low grade in Potions? Oh, Snape is probably a frustrated asshole who tried to get back at me for his sorry life? THAT MAN BROUGHT HIM, HARRY AND HERMIONE SLICED FRESH FRUIT FOR A SNACK WHEN THEY SPENT SUMMER AFTERNOONS AT SPINNER'S END. HE ACCOMPANIED HARRY TO RON'S HOUSE. He stayed over for tea once with his mother. You just cannot pretend he is the devil who spends time huddled on his home to making up new ways to torture his students anymore. He medicated Hermione when she hurt her knee falling from a swing. You can't hate the man who put a hello kitty band-aid on your knee (Hermione always brings with her her own small aid kit, funny ban-aids included).
Make no mistake, same goes for Snape. It's pretty hard to maintain your reputation as unsufferable professor when two of your students hang put by your house an awful lot. It's harder to be strict with them. And he does want to do that, Snape prides himself in projecting his image as a hard professor to deal with, who requires respect and the maximum effort in his subject. Ron sucks at Potions, and Snape is not going to give him better grades just because he is Harry's friend, but damn it's just...harder to do that thing when you don't care about how you students perform when they don't strive for perfection. Now he is disappointed. Disappointing in Ron Weasly. Disappointed for Ron Weasly's grade. He shouldn't carr about it! And also it's not fun anymore to tease Miss Granger. Now when she raises her hand Snape has resorted to tell her he knows she knows the answer, so why doesn't she give the rest of the class a chance? See, it lacks sarcasm, it lacks spite, it lacks maliciousness, it lacks...Snape's treadmark snarky attitude. "You're becoming soft, Severus" sometimes he sighs to himself, after missing what he would once consider a brilliant opportunity for a nasty comment. He then looks at Harry, Ron, Hermione, or whatever other kid his tongue now decided to spare by force of habit, taking a huge sigh of relief becayse Snape's remark has been less cutting than they expected. "Maybe it's not a bad thing" a voice in his head suggests. But what if his students lose respect for him then, it's always either feared or loved right? "You'll cross that bridge when you get there" a softer voice answer.
Speaking of failed Potions classes, Snape really can't hide his disappointment for Harry's grade. He'd thought living with him he would have learned something, even just observing him preparing potions as a child- they used to do this a lor when Harry was little, Snape bewed potions while Harry stayed in the same room, drawing or reading or making muggle homework or even helping sometimes. Harry is average at best. And Snape is only being fair, doesn't matter their relationship, he doesn't give him a point more or less on his homework, his work ethic is very strong. Snape considers this his greatest failure in Harry's regards.
But guess what he is great at? Bleah, Quidditch. Snape didn’t understand the appeal of the sport when he was at Hogwarts and he doesn’t understand it now. Harry blabbers to him excitedly about brooms and snitches and points and teams, but Snape barely understands him. "If only you were to pour such enthusiasm in more useful activities, like studying for Potions class". Harry puts on a face and looks away so Snape doesn't see him. He can't utter a word of Quidditch that Snape starts lecturing about "more useful activities".
"I am merely worried, Minerva, that pointless glory achieved in...sports will lure his mind from his studies. I wo't let the boy turn into a good-for-nothing brawny knobhead like all athlestes. " Severus complains to professor McGonagall. "He shouldn't waste away the little cleverness he has." He adds with a calculated insulting remark, in fear he let too much of his true feelings show.
"First of all, Severus, not all athletes are good-for-nothing brawny knobhead. There's nobility is sports." Minerva lectures him.
"You would say from such an unbiased point of view." Severus retorts. It's no secret Minerva is the biggest Quidditch fan in the school, her enthusiasm can trump the one of the students.
"Secondly, Harry has had an eccellent education and a dedicated" she says, stirring her tea while giving Severus a knowing look "he is not a knobhead and he will never be. About being brawny, I don't see how a but of exercise wouldn't help in preparation for darker days."
She and Severus drink their tea in silence.

😈 It's Ephie, your resident degenerate 😈
If you're here, you've had at least a taste of the delicious degeneracy I love to read and write. If I am wrong: I don't know how you got here, truly, but I am very pleased.
Ye olde askbox is open to requests.
Find me on AO3
SELF-RECS by fandom under the cut! (updated 5 Aug 2023)
In which I write fics that should feel squirmy but don't. Trust me on this one. Try a taste of the forbidden fruit. There’s some select fluff in there too. What can I say, I’ve got range.
Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Heartbreak Warfare | 5k | T | Snarry
The Potions master was dosed with heartbreak in a vial, ensuring a perfectly ironic death… Unless someone came along to cure him with true love’s kiss.
The Want of You | 7k | E | Snarry
On his night off, Severus unexpectedly realises that Harry has grown into quite an attractive man. He's just not going to think too hard about it. No, he's not going to think about him at all. It's fine. He's fine. Everything is fine.
Marching On | 10k | E | Snarry, Snucius, minor Teddy Lupin/Harry Potter
Fifteen years into their relationship, the status quo becomes untenable. Harry grapples with the issues he's swept under the carpet, while Severus finally realises that his best might not have been good enough. And Teddy? Well, he's just the catalyst that brought home the hard truths.
HPdom Cest Fics
When a Fire Starts to Burn | 10k | E | Snarry
It's a Severitus to Snarry A/B/O! Severus is stood up by an alpha for his yearly heat. Suppressants can only help so much then, and when his heat comes on with his sixteen-year-old adoptive alpha son around him, well, things happen.
Daddy Dom and the Pureblood Prince | 8k | E | Draco Malfoy/Lucius Malfoy
Draco knows he shouldn’t want his father to pound him into the mattress. But after seeing how very good Daddy is at it, the boy will do anything to get his way — and gets so much more than he ever dreamt of.
The Lover and the Boytoy | 10k | E | Draco Malfoy/Lucius Malfoy/Severus Snape
Draco has been thirsty for his Daddy’s best friend, Severus Snape - and Lucius knows it. Of course he'll indulge his boy, even (or maybe, especially) if it means sharing his lover.
An Inappropriate Use of the Dentist in His Office | 4k | E | Hermione Granger/Mr Granger
Inspired by this scintillating fact: "Dentists can tell if you’ve given a blow job recently. There is very specific bruising that occurs on the roof of the mouth." In which Mr Granger sees something he really would rather not in his own daughter's mouth, and it sends him spiralling. The said daughter provides relief of an unexpected sort. Alternate summary: When Dentist Daddy looks at his daughter's mouth and goes, “Girl, what that mouth do?”
Flesh of the Father, Freely Given | 18k | E | Harry Potter/Lily Luna Potter
Lily Luna has always been Harry's pride and joy. Spoiled and spunky, she was everything he could have ever asked for in a daughter. The day he finds out just what she's been up to online, however, is the day when he realises that he wants nothing more than to go from Dad to Daddy.

Sherlock Holmes/Mycroft Holmes (BBC Sherlock)
Home | 9k | E | Sherlock/Mycroft
"Back to Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes," Mycroft had said. But two years away, and he may as well have died in that fall off the roof of St Bart's. Baker Street was no longer synonymous with home. On impulse, Sherlock sends a text to Mycroft. Can I stay with you for a while? SH
Parallel | 20k | E | Sherlock/Mycroft
It happens, again and again. It happens every time Mycroft comes home. Sometimes, all they do is kiss. Most times, they do more than kiss. Mycroft never initiates it, but it doesn't matter when he always gives in, when he hopes for it, when he comes to look forward to the increasingly skilled seductions of his brother.
scales (and what they do) | 13k | E | Sherlock/Mycroft
Sometimes, communicating face-to-face is just too hard. Alternatively: Constantly text your crush for absolutely no reason + Holmescest = this fic.
Say Something Loving (series, on hiatus) | 90k+ | E | Sherlock/Mycroft
One brother held a gun on the other, and years of denial came crashing down around their ears. But reality is always more complex than fantasy, even for the brothers Holmes. The end of the line, but there was only one thing he wanted to know. "Tell me one last thing, brother. In this end, was it worth it to deny us what we wanted?"
Double Trouble | 13k | E | Sherlock/Mycroft/Antony Dimmond (Hannibal x-over)
After the wait of a lifetime, Mycroft finally brings someone home for Christmas. The handsome, suave, and intelligent Antony is genuinely charming, and it is obvious to anyone why he has caught Mycroft's eye. Sherlock could care less, but he is determined not to show it. Until Antony charms him too, and he has to admit that Mycroft may have finally moved on from their past.
Happy reading!

Until Severus Snape uncovers the truth of who Harry Potter really is and what he's been through. Watch as Severus does as nobody else has done before him. He takes care of Harry. Watch him flourish into who he was meant to be, a boy with the heart of a Gryffindor and smarts of a Slytherin. The Dursley's, Umbridge and Dumbledore had better watch out Severus is out for revenge. an introductory rec list (that no one asked for) to some of my favorite ships: drarry [4/10]
First fic I read for the pairing: Obsession by yesbocchan [2k,T] Harry thinks Malfoy is up to something evil. Until he finds out maybe he's not the only one with an obsession. [just a cute little eighth year fic i saw on tumblr back when i was first getting into fandom stuff (and back into harry potter in general) when i was near the end of high school. it’s cute, it’s sweet, and i was curious about drarry as a concept so]
Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Stealing Sweaters by DorthyAnn [12k,T] It's their eighth and final year and over the course of several months, Harry and Draco have managed to become close friends. Their friends are entirely certain that they ought to be much, much more. So they just decide to... help things along. [listen, everything that DorthyAnn writes is phenomenal, so how could i not fall in love with this ship after this?]
Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Animus Nexus by MystyVander [96k,T] It's Eighth Year at Hogwarts and it seems Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy hate each other more than ever before. Everybody is sick of it. Somebody was tired of the two enough to curse them, binding them together. What at first appears to be a death sentence to both Harry and Draco turns out to be the thing the both of them needed the most. [it’s enemies to friends to lovers coupled with accidental bonding coupled with discussions of magical theory coupled with wizarding traditions with a few misunderstandings and some angst all set in eighth year and that’s basically the perfect combination for me.] Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 [302k,T] Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness. Pairings: HP/DM (Slash) Timeframe: 1994-2002 Goblet to 4 yrs post-DH EWE Rating T for language, high angst, content. [this fic has lived rent-free in my head for three years and it fucking slaps. there’s angst and fluff and so many bittersweet moments and it’s both canon compliant and completely canon divergent and i am obsessed with it. 40000/10]
Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: love me now (touch me now) by swisstae [3k,G] Harry's never had a bath. Draco plans on changing that. OR in which Harry gets his hair washed and Loves It (and Draco. He loves Draco too.) [this fic is adorable and sweet and i enjoyed it immensely.]
Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin!Harry): Malfoy Flavor by Vorabiza [199k,E] Harry’s ready to banish the Golden Boy image and take charge of his life. Unfortunately for him, or fortunately, there are surprises in store for him. [Slytherin!Harry but it’s not an entire canon rewrite like most of the alternate sorting fics i love so much, so that’s fun. also severitus and just the right amount of soul crushingly painful angst. oh and it has a delightfully fluffy little sequel. ] Alternate Sorting AU 2: Electric Boogaloo (Ravenclaw!Draco): Chaos Theory by Tessa Crowley [102k,E] Chaos: when the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future. One gene varies, one neuron fires, one butterfly flaps its wings, and Draco Malfoy's life is completely different. Draco has always found a certain comfort in chaos. Perhaps he shouldn't. (warnings for: major character death, graphic depictions of violence, psychological torture, implied/referenced non-con) [as my notes on my bookmark said: GOD DAMNNNNN. I LOVE THIS FIC. I CRIED SO MUCH AND ALSO THERE WAS LAUGHTER AND JUST GOD DAMN. ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. so that about sums it up.] Time Travel AU: Annus Mirabilis by Ren [39k,E] Harry and Malfoy are trapped at Hogwarts around the time the school was founded. Stuck with a different way of doing magic, with no chocolate, and with each other, they have to find a way to work together if they want a chance to go home. [i almost never fuck with time travel aus but… this one slaps. also? hogwarts founders era?? hell yeah. also also? their relationship progresses in a way that feels so natural and the tension is so palpable and the writing is excellent.]
Favorite Series for the pairing: Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum [746k,E,6 Works] Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same? [Slytherin!Harry? Harry, Draco, Hermione friendship? Severitus? All in a complete series re-write that’s currently six completed works deep? What more could you possibly need?]
Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: I Do What I Want by XxTheDarkLordxX [509k,E] They say you shouldn't touch what isn't yours... Too bad no one told Harry that. A simple mistake that Harry made in his first year at Hogwarts is coming back to bite him in the arse. The war is over but the threat to his life is just beginning. This story begins with a simple apology that changes Harry’s life. It starts a domino effect that leads to unbelievable connections, undying love, unique past lives, unknown villains and an unstoppable family. Follow Harry and his friends on an epic adventure filled with twists, bumps, comfort, enemies, a new life and a lot of love. (warnings for: major character death, some character bashing) [the first (or first few? i forget) chapters are written in first person but they’re an internal monologue and the rest of the fic is not in first person, just so you know. Also, the concept slaps and the fic is cute and i love to see it (and i’ve read it thrice).]
Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Ron Weasley: Accidental Matchmaker by Phoenix_Waves [2k,T] "There's not a sexual tension out there that the man can't accidentally detect!" George beamed. "And then ask the stupid arse question that's going to light the spark and fan the flames." Lee added matter-of-factly. A fluffy Christmas one shot featuring our favorite older Gryffindors. [god this is excellent: the obliviousness, the mutual pining, the matchmaking, having the older gryffindor kids around and having a good holiday time- it’s all excellent.] Soulmates: Kiss Me Not by DorthyAnn [21k,T] Sometimes a witch or wizard's magical signature is so completely incompatible with another that they repel one another like magnets. On the other hand, if two magical signatures mesh well together, well there are no stronger relationships in all the world. In a sample of a thousand people, the average witch or wizard will be slightly repelled by four or five people and strongly repelled by only one, at the most. The opposite is true for attraction. But Harry Potter can't kiss anyone at all. [this is actually such a fascinating take on the classic soulmates trope. there’s no predestined person for everyone and there’s no magical guarantee of anything, just magic being a little difficult and i adore that. also the writing style is excellent and the characterizations are spot on.] Accidental Bonding + Bed Sharing: Let's Take A Chance On Happiness by endless_grey [21k,E] Harry works with Luna at her magical antique shop, and everything is going pretty well until a mysterious ring makes an appearance. Cue curse-breaker Draco Malfoy and an accidental bond, and suddenly Harry is magically married to his former nemesis. They need to break the bond before Hermione's fundraiser, but Harry doesn't remember "fall in love with the git" being part of the plan. [i discovered this fic while looking for something else, but it’s so good. i love their dynamic and it’s shift as the story progresses and i love both of their friendships with luna just as much. it’s funny and a little angsty and well written and has two of my favorite tropes in it. what more can i say?]

For the "Fanfic Ask Game" and because you deserve a mini break! Only positive questions: 💖 📥 🏅🌈 (for HP) ✨ 🍰 and also you're the best, good luck with all the Sunday work <3
Awww, thanks! You're making me blush. x3
💖 What do you like most about your own writing?
They way it makes me feel anchored and free at the same time and the way it can touch people's hearts.
📥 What is your fave fic to receive comments/messages on?
All of them! For real, it doesn't matter whether the fic has 2 or 200 comments, the moment I get the email notification I'm already smiling.
🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).
Updated my WIP!
🌈 What inspired you to write House Potter?
It was a lot of things coming together, I think. I started writing it in December 2019. Just a few months before, during summer, @hklnvgl had told me about this massive Severitus fic she'd been reading. I remember thinking what a fucking weird trope. xD Before that, I'd never read HP fic except for a Snarry deaging some years ago. Anyway, I got sucked into the Severitus fandom that very night and for some months to come.
And I love deaging stories, so of course I ended up reading de-aged Snape being taken care of by Harry and, somehow, I also found TASB. TASB was all I'd never thought I needed, tbh. And I couldn't find more quite like it.
So, fast forward to December. I'm once again with Dory, we've watched the Downton Abbey film, but I end up talking about this reverse Severitus trope and how I'd like to write a Severitus myself. I also remember saying I'd only got feelings but no plot. One of us —for the life of me can't remember who— suggested what if Snape got de-aged and was taken care of by someone other than Harry. Jily was a win-win right away because it meant Harry wouldn't become an orphan.
✨ Choose three adjectives to compliment your own writing.
Ah, shit, this is so hard. xD
Heartfelt, detailed, passionate.
🍰 Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave).
A fic I don't think I've recced before:
A Place for Harry, by MagnificentAndStrange (Severitus, 12k, complete)
Summary: Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving and caring, but nine-year-old Harry Potter knows the Dursleys will do whatever they can to make him miserable. After a terrible day at primary school, he doesn’t expect the evening at Number Four, Privet Drive to be any better, but perhaps it’s not too late for something good to happen.
Another fanfic ask game =P

Weavers
this was meant to be severitus, or at least Snape-mentors-Harry, so let’s call this the precursor to it
Summary: Bored before the start of sixth year, Harry goes through Petunia's old family photo albums. He demands some answers, and Dumbledore sends Snape. Read on AO3 here
The days are hot and dusty and Harry is left roving the same suburban streets, bored as hell, as the Dursleys pretend nothing is wrong and everyone he knows acts the same. Voldemort’s back, and he wants to kill him. His godfather’s dead. No one wants to talk about Cedric, and he doesn’t even know how to talk about Cedric, even if anybody knew to ask. Harry just walks, and kicks at fluttery bits of newspaper littering the ground, and tries not to let the heat sour his mood. When Aunt Petunia’s busy at the neighbor’s garden parties, Harry steals into the living room and starts going through the photo albums. Why, he’s not so sure, he just wants to know, to see, to remember that there was a past before Hogwarts, and so he flips through grotesque faded photos of Dudley and Uncle Vernon eating cake with him a shadow cut in half, just barely in view. These were not happy days, but Harry’s not sure he’s ever had any of those. It was fun laughing with Sirius and Ron and Hermione and the Twins sometimes, and he feels free and devoid of all this heavy thoughts on a broom. He finishes one photo album, slots it back in the shelf, and pulls out another. This one is older--before he was born. Maybe he’ll find a photo of his mother in it. He flips through time, ignoring a wedding photo--after his grandparents’ deaths--and polaroids of truly soul-crushing dates. He laughs at the bad hair, though he knows he of all people shouldn’t point fingers. Finally, he reaches his aunt’s teenage years, and he hopes he’ll find his mother there. It’s a weird thought, that his mother was barely more than a teenager when she was killed. She was only twenty when she had him. He’s almost sixteen now. He can’t imagine that, the pressure of having a baby with a target on its back in the middle of a war, and he wishes desperately  he could know what she was like. Sirius didn’t like to talk about her, and Lupin talks in circles about everything. He wishes there was someone he could ask. He finds a photo of her laughing with a boy who is not his father, who’s got his long black hair and a hand thrown up, too, covering his face. She’s about his age in this photo, or a bit older. Carefully he slides it out of the plastic. There’s writing on the back: “Weavers, Sev & Lily, 1976. to Baba O’Riley and the rest of our lives!!” The writing is familiar, spidery, almost indecipherable, and he squints because it reminds him of someone, it’s strangely familiar, and then he drops the photo in shock. Because he knows: that’s Severus Snape.
Rapidly now he flips through the pages. There’s one of his bright-eyed mother with a sullen-looking boy with a big nose and greasy hair, glowering at the camera as she laughs. There’s even one of her and Petunia and him all together, sitting in someone’s garden, and Snape is wearing too-big jeans and a stained t-shirt, staring solemnly at the camera. Now that he’s seen it he can’t unsee it. Aunt Petunia comes clattering in, throwing her keys onto the coffee table, and stops sharply at the sight of him with the photos all around him. “Put those back!” she shrieks. “You knew Snape?” he shrieks back. Petunia rears back, apopletic. “You know Snape?” “Yeah, I know Snape,” Harry yells back. “He’s my Potions professor, that greasy git. How do you know Snape?” Petunia sinks onto the couch. “That--awful boy,” she says falteringly. “A teacher? At your school?” She puts her hand over her mouth. “He hated it there, he’s went back to teach?” Harry says, “Yeah. We hate him too.” Petunia begins to laugh. “Bastard,” she says, chortling, “serves him right. I always thought he’d end up teaching chemistry, or in prison. I suppose your Headmaster made him one of those offers you can’t refuse, like he did with me. I never wanted you, I hope you know.” “Believe me,” Harry says wearily, “I picked up on that early on, thanks.” Aunt Petunia yells at him for nosing into her family’s business and Harry heroically resists the urge to inform her that it’s his family too, and instead keeps the photos of his mother stealthily hidden in his pocket. When she’s done, he rushes to his room, pulls out a piece of parchment and a quill, and writes a simple sentence: “Snape knew my mom?” He sends it off to Dumbledore. This complicates the whole Prophecy bullshit he told him about, and he wants answers. Hedwig knows how to charm them out of people, too. She won’t peck the Headmaster, but she sure will be cute. Sure enough, two hours later--or however long it takes for an owl to fly from Surrey to an unknown part of rural Scotland--the doorbell rings. Harry rushes downstairs and throws open the door. He falters. It’s not Dumbledore. “Mr. Potter,” Snape sneers. He’s wearing muggle clothes, black jeans that actually fit him, a band t-shirt, and a blazer with its sleeves rolled up. Harry blinks. Snape likes the Clash? Snape likes things? “I have been told to take you on a walk.” Harry says, “Uh. Do you have that in writing?” Snape’s a Death Eater, after all. He doesn’t want to die. Snape grabs his shoulder and pulls him out of the house. He closes the door. Harry yelps. “Rest assured while I have no interest in ending your idiocy as of yet,” Snape hisses. “Now, to walk. This way.” Sharply he turns, and Harry runs to catch up. “You wrote the Headmaster.” “You knew my mom!” Harry says. He pulls out the photos from pocket and fans them out like a hand of cards. “For your whole childhood! And my age, too!” “Obviously,” Snape sneers. He snatches the photos from him and scrutinizes each snapshot. His scowl deepens. In Potions class, this would be a sign to get out of blast range. Unfortunately, the only thing around to hide behind is a street lamp and a hedge, and Harry’s pretty sure Snape can get around that. Snape snorts when he gets the Weaver photo. “Your aunt kept these? She hated your mother--and me.” It’s on the tip of his tongue to say, “Well, you’re not very likeable. Sir.” With truly heroic, Gryffindor-standard effort, Harry restrains himself. He shrugs instead. He wants information. He’ll have to tap into whatever Slytherin qualities the Sorting Hat identified in him to get it. Snape says finally, “I grew up across the river from your mother. She was my friend. Then we went our separate ways.” “Well, you called her a Mudblood,” Harry says. “I mean, of course she’d stop talking to you.” “Do not say that word,” Snape hisses. Harry mentally kicks himself. He shouldn’t have brought up the Pensieve incident--except, ravenously, he wants to know everything about the Pensieve incident. Dumbledore sent him there, to answer his questions. He’s got nothing to lose by asking. Snape’s gonna lose his shit anyway. “Yeah, sorry,” Harry says, annoyed. He stops under a lamp post. Dusk is coming on thick, and even on Privet Drive, it’s turning to a pretty night. Snape crosses his arms and looks at him sardonically. He is sneering, preparing to spit his usual venom, but Harry persists, “How’d all that even happen? I mean, clearly my dad was a bit of a prick--I don’t know what she saw in him--” “Potter,” Snape says. “Shut up.” Harry holds his hands up. “Fine. We won’t talk about it. But you and my mother were friends. No one tells me anything about her. It’s like she had nobody but--you, I guess, and my dad. They just say I have her eyes. It’s almost my birthday, uh, Professor.” He adds the title and the respect a little thick. Snape is unamused. “Aunt Petunia just says she was a showoff. What was she really like?” Snape says, “Your aunt’s right, she was a showoff. But she was barely more than a child when she was killed. She never got the time to grow out of it. Dumbledore sent me, Potter. I’m supposed to bring you to the Weasleys. But I am not dealing with your aunt’s histrionics. Bring your things and meet me the block over. I’m parked over there.” He points at the rather nondescript gray car. “I’ll answer your questions on the drive over. You will not mention this to anyone, particularly your little friends.” It sounds sketchy, but Harry’s willing to do it just for the rumors that will circulate around the neighborhood as they see him sneaking into a strange man’s car with a wooden trunk and a bird cage. Harry darts back home and drags his things down the street and piles them into Snape’s car. Funny thought, that--that Snape has a car, and a driver’s license. He goes in for the back first, to sit with Hedwig, but Snape snaps, “I am not your chauffeur!” so he returns to the front seat. He eyes him warily as he steps in. Snape does not look at him, but sorts through a pile of CDs. “You do a lot of driving?” Harry asks disbelievingly. Snape’s nostril twitch in reply. He pulls out a battered case--The Who. He puts it in, starts the car, and there they go, driving away from Privet Drive. This is not the most surreal thing that has ever happened to Harry. He’s watched a baby hatch into a man out of a cauldron before, and listened to the whispers of the dead, and ridden on an invisible horse, as well as a broom. But Snape is serene, tapping his long, skinny fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the music. Harry sneezes. The car stinks of weed. “Are you high?” Harry asks. Snape says, “To deal with you during my time off--there is no other way.” He looks at him suddenly. “Get the map. I haven’t driven through Devonshire in years. When does the road merge?” Harry shuffles through the hatbox of the car, shoving aside a pair of leather gloves, a pack of cigarettes, and a spare wand. He pulls out the map and looks at it despairingly. “What, Potter? Can’t read a map?” Harry says, “Uh. Think we drove past it. Sir.” Snape curses and does a U-town, flipping off the cars that beep in their wake. Harry is beginning to get a little scared. Snape hates him, that’s obvious, and sometimes he thinks he wants to kill him. He really doesn’t want to die in a car crash, he can just imagine the headlines. Eventually Snape gets them on their way, nasty and irritated. They detangle the suburban streets and drive into the night, getting out of the suburban tarmac into the muddy rural. When Harry tries to ask a question, Snape turns up the music. They listen to “Baba O’Riley” three times. Harry stays silent the whole time, afraid. His mother wrote this on the back of the photograph, after all, maybe there’s a subliminal message here. She wanted to go. Harry wonders, but where to? The end of Avada, a flash of green light. Maybe a car crash would have been better, more glamorous, like Princess Diana. What would she have even thought of that? Harry musters up the courage. He says, “She wrote about this on the back of one of the photographs. 1976, weavers.” He puts it on the dashboard, and Snape, keeping one hand on the wheel, picks it up and glances at it. His expression, already sour, curdles. “What does that mean?” “Tuney doesn’t talk about her childhood much, does she?” Snape remarks. He faces the road and misses the exit they were supposed to turn onto. Harry puts his hand into his other pocket and surreptitiously takes ahold of his wand. Snape’s probably not trying to kill him, but as Moody--well, fake-Moody says, “Constant vigilance!” He keeps his mouth shut. Snape’s always been garrulous, using ten words when three would suffice, and cramming as many syllables into them as he can. Hermione once despaired that lectures with him were like a speech class. It was all about the enunciation. Finally, Snape says, “We grew up in a textile town. Most of the men worked at the factory, until it closed. They were the weavers, and we were too, if it weren’t for magic.” “You’re not muggleborn!” Harry says, alarmed. “How--” “No,” Snape says. “I am not answering any questions about myself, Potter.” He veers sharply on the road, finally getting them back on track. By Harry’s reckoning, they’ve got about a half hour left. He sinks in his seat, sullen. “So what about my mum?” he asks. “Did she like--weaving? Growing up in the town? What was she like?” Snape says, “No, no, and--young, because she was young. Headstrong. Sarcastic. She didn’t suffer fools, until she did.” Harry says, “My father wasn’t a fool!” “Your father used to run around school grounds with a fully transformed werewolf.” Harry has to say, maybe his father was a bit of a fool, after all. He does not, though, have to say all that aloud. He says, “Sarcastic?” Snape says, “I think much of her wit went above her Housemates’ heads. They always said she was kind. That was not my experience. She was extraordinarily righteous, and outspoken, and strict with herself and everyone around her. To the point where one wondered how anyone could measure up to Saint Lily’s grandiose proclamations.” The CD ends, finally, and Snape clicks a button. He seems amused. “Lupin didn’t like her much, and she didn’t like Sirius. I am not surprised they avoid talking about her.” Eyes on the road, he goes through the electronic piles by touch, and pulls out a tape. He sticks it in. Harry blinks. It’s the Velvet Underground now, “All Tomorrow’s Parties.” “What costume shall the poor girl wear,” the car radio warbles, “to all tomorrow’s parties?” Harry says, “They said she was kind.” “Perhaps she was to them. She was always demanding of me, and I do not call that kind.” “You called her a Mudblood.” Snape says wearily, “And no one has ever let me forget it, twenty-one long years later. Righteous, and demanding, and strict--but never kind.” “Yeah, well, you joined the Death Eaters, too.” Snape laughs suddenly, sharply, bitterly. “Much worse than calling someone a slur. And I have spent the rest of my life repenting of it.” They’re in Devon now, getting close to the end. Harry’s gotten used to the smell and he’s enjoying the music now, even though he thinks it’s a little sad. He wonders if Snape is thinking about himself, or his mother, and if his mother would’ve liked this song. It’s the first time he’s ever heard someone talk about her like a person, not a saint, and he wants more. He wants to see her be mean--meaner, he guesses, than what he saw in the Pensieve. He wants to see her being too hard on herself and snapping back for justice, whatever she thought justice was. But she’s dead, and he’s only six years younger than she was when she died. That’s an insane thought. In six years, if Voldemort doesn’t kill him, he’ll be the same age as his mother when she died. Maybe he’ll be even older. He looks at Snape, who is meditative, hands relaxed on the steering wheel. Snape’s watching the road. He looks not-old for once, not angry or sour or raging. He just looks like a guy approaching middle-age, who’s tired, who’s thinking about the past. Harry thinks, he’s not really ugly when he lets his face be. Maybe he’s thinking not-ugly thoughts. Melancholy makes a person look human. Snape doesn’t seem like a Potions professor in this car--just sad. They pull through the town of Ottery St. Catchpole and Snape stops at a park. He looks at Harry directly and says, “Your mother...she was more than her eyes. She was an extraordinarily vibrant  young woman, who died too young, who had plans for herself and everyone around her. You’re nothing like her. No one is. There was only ever one Lily Evans, and we wouldn’t want anymore.” Harry gets out of the car and clambers to the boot of the car, getting his trunk and rattling Hedwig’s cage as he goes. She squawks at him, outraged, and he smiles at her affronted dignity. He’d thank Snape for telling him all this, but he doesn’t think he deserves it, because he only did it on Dumbledore’s orders. He gestures with the cage that he’s heading to the Burrow now. “Uh, bye then,” Harry says. He doesn’t necessarily want to wish him a safe trip. He gets five paces before Snape stops him. “Potter!” Harry turns back. Snape is standing in front of the car, illuminated in the headlights. His wand is up. Harry drops Hedwig’s cage, going for his own, but Snape is faster. “Obliviate!”The days are hot and dusty and Harry is left roving the same suburban streets, bored as hell, as the Dursleys pretend nothing is wrong and everyone he knows acts the same. Voldemort’s back, and he wants to kill him. His godfather’s dead. No one wants to talk about Cedric, and he doesn’t even know how to talk about Cedric, even if anybody knew to ask. “Obliviate!”
