Goats, Crows and The Flood
Or why Crowley turns the goats into crows in the Job minisode
If you're reading that and thinking "eh, what's the Flood got to do with it?" then read on. It wasn't done just so Crowley got to change his name. It's never as simple as that. C'mon now, this is the GOmens AU, I'm not going to write a meta about something like this and not give you at least three if not four layers as to why, now, am I? Certainly not, and this one won't be any different.
Tumblr media
Recently I picked up a book that has been sitting for far too long on a pile near my kitchen that needs sorting through called Parallel Myths* and in it is a section on Flood myths. (It's got lots of other good bits as well, but the Flood myths are what I want to talk about here.) The Flood is a wide-spread myth, with stories all around the world from India, to the Greek myths, to the Incas and Aztecs and in North America as well.
There are four stories that include crows as messengers who are sent to look out for land. The first is our familiar bible story. Oh, did you miss that bit? Yeah, I know, you keep getting told about the dove that represents the holy spirit that came back with the olive branch. Why would they want to tell you about a dirty old crow? And why is that crow dirty anyway? Ah, hold that thought...we'll come back to that shortly.
Tumblr media
Another very famous story that include a crow being sent out to look for land after a great Flood is in the epic story of Gilgamesh. While on a journey Gilgamesh meets an old man named Utnaptishtim who tells the hero how he survived a great flood by building a boat after being warned by the gods to do so, and then floating for several days before coming to rest on a mountain top. At first he sent out a dove, but the dove returned. Then he sent out a swallow, but the swallow returned also, so he knew there was no land yet. But the third bird he sent out was a crow, and it didn't come back, so Utnaptishtim knew it was finally safe to leave.
There are also crows mentioned in two North American Flood myths, with the Cree and the Algonquin, and in both stories they are also sent to look out for land.
So why am I telling you this? Because of this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is, as we know, is a bit of a play on words, but it establishes the association between the ungulate offspring and the human offspring when we run into the next occurrence of the innocent being killed on the Almighty's fickle whim in the Job minisode in S2. And we know our favourite demon is just not going to take that lying down that without some kind of protest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So after delivering his open monologue to the goats, which gives an insight into himself, then being confronted by Aziraphale, and revealing he has a permit, from the Almighty Herself, no less, he turns Job's goats into crows.
(And if you've missed the bit about why the goats, and not the sheep, which the archangels kept going on about, its because sheep were seen as more "Christian" as the rams were considered faithful to their ewes, as good followers should be, but goats were observed to just do it with any-nanny, with no sense of commitment, if you get what I mean, so they were considered more "demonic" in nature.)
Tumblr media
The bible seems to have a bit of a love-hate relationship with birds. On hand they can be used for food or sacrifices, on the other hand they are metaphorical demons! There is an association made between "birds of the air" and demons, waiting to pick off the weak (of thought) and young before they can be enfolded into the "safety" of the church.
Even the noble eagle is frowned upon in a way, as it eats carrion, or rotting meat. And that is something ravens and crows are known to do as well. This eating of dead animals, and humans on the field on the ancient battlefield, led crows to be associated with death and the afterlife, and by extension, transformation from one form to another.
(I can't help thinking at this point about the Sandman's assistant crow helper that travels between worlds, but also I've written a couple of metas about both Crowley and the Bentley being facilitators for the crossing of thresholds between different worlds.)
If you've ever had a close association with a crow or two- and I have, over several years, they can be wily opponents! - you come to respect their intelligence and adaptability, no matter how they might be frustrating you! **
The raven is also mentioned in the Book of Job 38:41
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
We didn't hear this line delivered to Job during the minisode, though we certainly heard some of the other lines from verses 38 and 39 that come before and after it. God is in the middle of telling Job about the universe, the earth and the creatures upon it, and how She looks after them. The line Jimbriel speaks about the morning stars all singing together is Job 38:7, for example. Just before mentioning this loathsome bird, She mentions that most noble of animals, the lion. But look, She also cares about ugly croaking raven fledglings that seem to get kicked out of the nest as soon as they can fly. How do they fend for themselves? It is seen as the mercy of God that she provides for each of the creatures of the Earth, both the lion and the raven. (Well, there's some interesting metaphorical links riiiight there...I hope I don't need to spell them out....)
So where are we? We've gone from a crow being a messenger for Noah, to kids/goats from the Flood scene in S1E3, to demon-associated goats being transformed into demon-associated crows in the Job minisode in S2E2, just before Job's human kids are saved from destruction by being transformed into geckos - which is also a significant symbolic creature for resurrection (which I explain in another meta.)
You know, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we loop back for a longer look at the Flood in S3. Kids, crows, a transformative experience...
Va-va-voom, here we come!

**I know there are corvids all around the world, and they can be shy, important birds in the ecosystem but here in Australia they can also be big bullies who know they are bigger than the other birds and throw their weight around accordingly and then do gross stuff like dirty up the backyard bird bath by finding discarded sandwiches and dog bones or even Lego blocks and drop them in to "soften" them for later consumption and just leave a filthy mess there for everybird else. yyyiikkk.

"One Piece is the best shonen manga"
(remember: 60 second hot takes are by their nature not nuanced, they are strong opinions presented confidently. Art is not objective.)
SCRIPT
People like to debate this a lot, but One Piece is the best shounen manga of all time, and it's not even close, and I'll tell you why.
It has the battle hype, the powerups, the training arcs, and epic multi-layered confrontations between heroes and shadowy villains. It has the high stakes and the My Friends Are My Power nakama cheese, the victories snatched from the jaws of defeat, the grand adventure to exotic locations, it has all of that.
But none of the others - not Bleach, not Dragon Ball, not Shaman King, not Hunter x Hunter, not My Hero Academia, not Yu Yu Hakusho or Soul Eater or Fairy Tail or Naruto or Boruto or Demon Slayer, or Flame of Recca (if you're really old), have ever left me weeping like a grieving father for a cartoony little sheep's headed boat, which wills itself back to life from critical damage to rescue the Straw Hats in a desperate hour, and whose final dying wish, as the wear and tear has finally become too much, is that it could carry its beloved crew just... one more mile across the sea.

Ents and Hobbits...er....
Treants - Unlike elves and dwarfs, who have a bit of plausible deniability from folklore and mythology, treants are explicitly taken from the works of Tolkien. To the point that there was a need for a legally distinct name for them, as "ent" is owned and copyrighted. What is lost in these translations is, I think, the good part of ents. They are basically a sort of giant (I believe ent is derived from eotan) that shepherd trees like sheep until they become almost indistinguishable from them. Most iterations of treants play them out as simply human-like trees.
Treants are a race of giants, but ones mostly ambivalent to the cosmological order. While it would be tempting to have them play a role like Silvanus or Leshy, this ambivalence is in itself a little intriguing. They have no positive or negative relationships with others, save that they treat their "flocks" with care. They are slow, but not dimwitted, keeping to themselves. During their long periods of dormancy they hear the whispers from Mother Earth. Whether they pay her mind or not is anyone's guess. Treants come from her, having stone-like bones and mud-like blood. As time goes on, their curly hair tangles and becomes infested with lichen and algae, and the lines in their skin run deep, making them appear tree-like.
Halflings - Or, let's be frank, hobbits. Hobbits are in the same boat as ents, see above. In the world of Middle Earth, hobbits are most often likened to humans. However, in terms of their origins and general nature, they seem to fit the bill of elves and fairies more. Elves are derived from the "high" mythology and epic sagas that Tolkien so loved, while hobbits/halflings are derived from "low" folklore. The idea of another race of people, generally smaller than us, living beneath the Earth, invisible to most, is ubiquitous across Western Europe. And heck, even the world.
Does this make halflings fairies? Sort of. I would consider the the fairy version of the penguin or ostrich. They lost many of the fantastical qualities that define fairies in favor of living shorter but more productive material lives. This meshes well with the innate luck that halflings tend to possess, and the fact that the original monster manual calls leprechauns "a species of halfling with strong pixie strain".
Where does that place them in this setting? Well, halflings are just that: small and overlooked. People are broadly sure that there must be halflings cities and villages somewhere, but even their closest neighbors have never seen them in person. Unless the halflings themselves invited them in. It's not invisibility like true fairies possess, rather a sort of wide-spread inconspicuousness. Those that live far away might even consider them a tall-tale until one shows up in their tavern one day.

Warnings include: graphic depictions of injury, brief sheep slaughtering (for survival only), spoilers for EPIC: The Cyclops Saga
~~~
Leo gets together a convoy before he dares to enter the cave the Lotus Eaters had told him about. He takes Raph and Don, of course, as his second-in-command and strategist. With them, he takes Honeycutt, a secondary strategist from a magical culture Leo has never encountered, Michael, a man with metal fused permanently to his head, and a small handful of other soldiers Leo had fought beside and trusted greatly. They make it quickly to the beach, docking the boats. Don goes to round up the listed soldiers from the names Leo gives him.
Honeycutt, tattooed arms folded to his chest as he stared at the cave with piercing green eyes, grunts. "Captain," he says. "I understand that we are running out of supplies, but I don't think here is where we should stop to stock up."
"You have concerns?" Leo asks, turning to his long-time friend.
"Hmm," Honeycutt growls lowly. "Many," he replies, scratching his cheek. "But none that would warrant us turning to find somewhere else when we don't know how far away the next opportunity might be."
Leo nods. "I understand. We'll be careful," he assures his friend. "I'm prepared for it to be a trap."
Honeycutt nods back. "Very well," he replies.
"Captain!" Raph shouts a little ways away from on top of a hill, "We're ready!"
So, Leo grabs an unlit torch and steps up to the front of the convoy. "Be on guard, gentlemen! We don't know what we're walking into." The small convoy nod to him with agreeing noises.
Leo turns, lights the torch in his hand off the one Don holds out to him, and proceeds inside the cave without hesitation. My lady, he prays, watch over us, please. He feels a little warmer in response.
As they travel further inside the cave, Leo begins to hear bleating and baying from sheep. He tilts his head, trying to follow the noise. "Raph, Don, split up," he directs.
His brother immediately split off in different directions. The crew divides themselves among themselves and follows the three royals closely. The bleating gets louder the further Leo goes. He carefully walks forward, inching towards the noise as lightly as he can.
Finally, his torch finds a sudden drop, and the bleating grows the loudest. Kneeling down, Leo holds the torch closer to the shadows and smiles. "Over here!" he calls to the other convoy members.
Don and Raph are both at his side in seconds. Don grins wide as his eyes land on the massive amounts of rams and ovine. "Look at all the food!" he cries, spotting the sheep meat already strung up to be stored. "Look at all these sheep!" He turns back to Leo. "I can't believe this cave has all this for us to keep!"
"I've got to hand it to you both," Raph replies, crossing his arms over his chest with a satisfied smirk. "This is quite the treat." He takes a mental count with bright eyes. "There are enough sheep here to feed the entire fleet." He leans over and snags one, dragging it up and drawing his knife. He kills it quickly, blood pouring from the new slit in its throat. The panicked bleating stops with a disgusting gurgle. "They're perfect to store and eat while we travel," Raph reports, dragging the dead animal up the cliff and dropping it to let it finish draining out on the ground out of the way of the convoy as they begin to reach down and gather the sheep to take with them.
Blood pools in the dirt. Don looks away uncomfortably, and Leo gently sets a hand on his shoulder, trying to be comforting. If they didn't need this for survival, he'd be perfectly happy to leave the sheep be. Speaking of, actually-
Leo makes a debating noise, taking his hand back and crossing his arms. "It's almost too perfect, too good to be true." He looks around, spotting deep darkness in the back. Given the lack of light, he feels safe enough to assume that it's the end of the cave. "Why would the Lotus-eaters pass up on all this food?"
"Who are you?" demands a new voice from behind them.
The entire convoy freezes as Leo whips around. Some 100 feet above them, red and ugly, stares a single eye pinned on them. In the darkness, it's all the convoy can see. There's a shocked gasp from Leo's side that could honestly come from either of his brothers.
Leo swallows. My Lady, protect us, he prays again, and the warm feeling returns. "Hey, there!" he calls, thanking the gods that his voice doesn't shake. "We're just travelers."
The single eye flickers down to wear the ram continues bleeding out into the dirt. It narrows.
"We come in peace," Leo finishes lamely, stepping back, hands subtly reaching out to cover both his brothers.
The eye flickers back up to Leo. "You killed my sheep," it accuses. "My favorite sheep."
Shit, Leo thinks, blinking in pure terror.
"What gives you the right to deal a pain so deep?" It snarls, "Time to drink your blood over where you stand. Your life is now in my hands. Before I'm done, you will learn that it is not fun to take. You came to my home to steal, but now you'll become my meal. A fair trade, I think, to take from you like you took from me."
Leo steps up immediately. "There's been a misunderstanding!" he calls. "We never came here to steal!" Gods, they had been sent into a trap, hadn't they? He looks at the dead ovine on the floor. "But now that I see we've caused you pain and damage, maybe we can make a deal?" He prays that this works; they all could be dead otherwise. "I'll give you our finest treasure, so long as we leave alive! You can keep the world's best-tasting wine!"
The eye slackens, becoming softer. "Wine?" it asks.
Leo holds out a hand without looking back. "Don, your flask," he commands quietly.
Don immediately unlatches the emergency flask from his waist and hands it over without fuss, eyes wide and frightened.
Leo holds out the flask, uncapping it to let the aroma air out the open space. While the beast is focused on the smell, Leo quickly and quietly takes the lotus he took from Don earlier and crushes it in his hand, slipping it into the drink. "Have a drink!" he offers. "One sip, and you'll understand the power that's in your hands. A wine so fresh, you'll never long for human flesh again! Then, we shall be on our way; no bloodshed required today." He smiles nervously. "A trade, you see? A gift from you and a gift from me."
A giant hand descends from the shadows, fingers twisted and calloused. It holds out its hand with an expectant stare. Leo swallows back the undignified noise that wants to escape his lips. He gives the flash to the hand. Thick fingers pinch the flask carefully, and the hand disappears back into the darkness. Quietly, he demands, "Tell half of the men to return to the fleet."
Raph immediately turns and gives the command as a loud swallow echoes against the rock.
"Ah," the eye sighs. "I'd like to thank you," it says. "Stranger, what's your name?"
And Leo, taught by years of assassination attempts by rival kingdoms and the occasional mystic, knows better than to give out his name like that. "My name is Nobody," he replies swiftly as Don and Raph both look to protest. "Nobody," he repeats.
Something creaks from beneath the giant eye, a sharp-toothed and crooked smile glints in the shadow. "Nobody," it agrees. "For your gift, I've one to reply."
Leo chuckles nervously. "I'm so glad we see the same outcome," he replies hesitantly.
"Yes," the eye rumbles. "You shall be the final man to die."
A bolt of fear shoots Leo directly through the heart. "What?" he whispers.
Then the shadows move, and out steps the ugliest creature Leo has ever seen. It snarls, rearing back its fists. Without thinking, Leo shoves both his brothers down as the fist swings in the spaces their heads had just been.
"Watch out!"
I saw some people making some candy versions of their characters and I suddenly wanted to do the same with Wally. This was a lot of fun! Coloring the gummy body and the cotton candy was a bit of a thing, heheh. But I really liked coming up with the different candies to replace his normal anatomy with.
You can buy him as a sticker here!
Sumerian Mythology - The earliest deities of ancient Mesopotamia (31)
The legend of the Sumerian Flood that destroyed humans
In Sumerian mythology, it was the gods who sent the deluge. Humans were created to shoulder the work of the gods, but when they were overly arrogant, the flood was sent.
The Sumerian version of the Legend of the Flood, which survives today, is a clay tablet dating from the Babylonian period in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, and was excavated in the city of Nippur.
Only about a quarter of the story survives, so there is much that we do not know, but it is thought to be almost identical to the "great flood" described in the Akkadian "Epic of Atra-Hasis" and the "Epic of Gilgamesh".
The outline is as follows:
The first part deals with the creation of man and the animals and the founding of the first 5 cities Eridu, Bad-tibira, Larak, Sippar, and Shuruppak. After that the gods have decided to send a flood to destroy the human species. However, the god Enki ( Ref1) secretly warns the ruler of Shuruppak, Ziusudra, to build a large boat to save the mankind. King Ziusudra was also a priest, a modest man who feared and respected the gods.
it is describing the flood. Soon after, the terrible storm raged for seven days, "the huge boat had been tossed about on the great waters," then The god Utu (the sun god: Ref2) appeared and shone his light on the heavens and the earth. And Ziusudra opens a window, prostrates himself, and sacrifices an ox and a sheep. Ziusudra is prostrating himself before An (Sky: Ref3) and Enlil (Breath of the Lord: Ref4), who give him "breath eternal" and take him to dwell in Dilmun. The remainder of the poem is lost.
シュメール神話~古代メソポタミア最古の神々(31)
シュメールの大洪水伝説〜人間を滅ぼす大洪水
シュメール神話では、大洪水を送るのは神々であった。人間は神々の労働を肩代わりするためにつくられたが、その人間たちが傲慢であったときに大洪水が送られた。
現在残っているシュメール語版『大洪水伝説』は前二千年紀前半のバビロニア時代に書かれた粘土版で、ニップル市から出土した。
物語全体の四分の一ぐらいしか残っていないので、わからない部分も多いが、アッカド語で書かれた『アトラ・ハシース叙事詩』や『ギルガメッシュ叙情詩』の中で語られている「大洪水」とほぼ同じと考えられている。
概要は以下の通り:
第1部では、人間と動物の創造と、最初の5都市エリドゥ、バドティビラ、ララク、シッパル、シュルパックの建設が記されている。その後、神々は人間の種を滅ぼすために大洪水を起こすことを決定した。しかし、エンキ神(参照1)は人間を救うため、シュルッパクの支配者ジウスドラに大きな船を作るように密かに警告する。ジウスドラ王は神官でもあり、神々を恐れ敬う、慎み深い人間であった。
やがて、恐ろしい嵐が7日間続き、「大船は大海原に翻弄されていた」が、ウトゥ神(太陽神:参照2)が現れ、天と地に光を放った。ジウスドラは窓を開けてひれ伏し、神々に牛と羊を生け贄に捧げた。ジウスドラはアン神(天:参照3)とエンリル神」(主の息吹:参照4)の前にひれ伏し、アンは彼に「永遠の息」を与え、彼をディルムンの地に住まわせる。この詩の残りの部分は失われている。
Finally realized why I like Ocean’s Eleven so much (beyond the obvious): it’s a fucking retelling of the Argonautica? And not only that - it’s not a ‘let’s use tried-and-tested tropes so the audience loves it’ story, it’s a deliberate retelling of the Argonautica. Harry Brown, the screenwriter of the original 1960 movie, was a Harvard-educated poet who also retold the Iliad as a Western in his novel The Stars In Their Courses. And all those elements I love in the Argonautica (so much I wrote my thesis on it) are on glorious display in Ocean’s Eleven.
Like this story works well because of two things: one, we feel immediate empathy for the hero who wants a righteous revenge (Jason wants his throne back, Danny wants to ruin the man who ‘stole’ his wife) and two we are enchanted by the weird cast of characters our hero needs to accomplish his goal and how everything just comes together as a team effort. Because, unlike other epic stories, the Argonautica is based on the ‘helpers’ blueprint: the hero is a regular guy who won’t and can’t succeed alone, but his kindness, daring and bravery ensure he’s got the support of a cast of powerful friends and allies.
In fact, those friends and helpers are mostly way more powerful than the down-on-his-luck, lost-his-kingdom, went-to-jail Danny/Jason type: like Danny’s handpicked professionals, Jason’s original crew was 100% specialized, talented and bizarre, and included not only Herakles himself, but several other demi-gods, a guy who kept Apollo as his personal slave, a wind-eater, a famous ship-builder, the only man who ever wielded a two-headed axe, the Minotaur’s brother, Odysseus’ dad, Helen’s brother and a lot of other fantastical characters.
(You might recognize this as that kind of fairy tale that goes, Lonely orphan looks for adventure, meets big man who’s trying to drink a river. Do it like this, the orphan says; the man does it and is so grateful it works, he decides to go with the boy. In the next village, they meet a tall man who’s trying to harness the wind. Do it like this...By the end, the orphan reaches the evil magician’s palace with a crew of weirdo strongmen who help him free a princess.)
Tess, of course, is our Medea, a woman who’s supposed to be loyal to the ‘evil king’ but is instead drawn to the hero. And Brown even managed a beautiful rewriting of the most gruesome part of the Greek myth: as Danny and his men are escaping, it’s fake money they blow up and leave behind to trick Terry and his men, and not the dismembered body of an innocent victim.
Finally, it’s also fitting that Danny’s target is not some random bank, but the richest casino of the most golden city in the US, since Jason's target is also the Las Vegas of his time: the overt subtext of the Argonautica is that the Caucasus region is full of gold, which is so abundant in rivers any sheep wading one will get its wool coated with it (this is what the Golden Fleece is, and yes, there is a grain of truth to this old legend).
I don’t know. To me and many others, what’s so appealing here is that most heroes don’t need us - but this one does. Jason would have been killed in some boating accident had he left on his own, and Danny Ocean would have remained a sad ex-con without his friends. There is a lot to like in the kind of story that’s not ‘Here is the Chosen One, the Heroest of Heroes, look at him do his thing’ but rather ‘Let’s help this unfortunate idiot make his dreams come true’.
