#Star Wars ep viii

Text
I've had a bit of downtime lately so I watched, on a bunch of consecutive evenings, Star Wars Episodes I-VIII. I left out Ep. IX because that's the only one I don't have the DVD of, because after seeing it in theaters I refused to spend any more money on that travesty of a finale.
And you know what? I've decided that the Skywalker Saga works pretty okay as an octet, thank you very much, with a sequel duology instead of a sequel trilogy. Certainly Ep. VIII leaves a lot of things unresolved, but hey, Kylo Ren and Finn each cathartically managed to get rid of their oppressors (Snoke and Phasma respectively); Luke reached a satisfying end to his arc (I'm still very much in the Luke's Character Development Is Perfectly Consistent Through Ep. VIII camp); the rebellion is properly reborn and ready to fight; Kylo and Rey have formed a sort of close yin/yang relationship that maybe actually somehow represents a "balance to the Force", whatever that ever was supposed to mean. Maybe -- and especially since the first two trilogies formed such a neat arc ending in unqualified triumph for the good side only for us to see that the clouds soon gathered again -- maybe the most mature and sensible way to the end the saga is inconclusively in terms of whether light or dark wins the conflict, because that's the way our actual universe really works. (Oh, and Princess Leia just dies offscreen soon after the ending of Ep. VIII, in her Carrie Fisher persona. It kind of says so in the credits!)
This is imperfect, but it has to be better than acknowledging the irredeemably-written story handed to us for the finale episode. I will stubbornly refuse to accept it as canon. I hereby decree that The Last Jedi is The Last Film in the main series.

List of Star Wars Medias
navigating star wars is tricky and complex but here's everything (mostly) in order based off of the timeline. some of the medias overlap.
Prequel Trilogy Era (Galactic Republic)
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars: The Clone Wars [the movie]
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Szn. 1 - Szn. 7 Ep. 9)
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Szn. 7 Ep. 10 - Szn. 7 Ep. 12) [you don't have to watch ROTS before you watch these last episodes ^^ it's just what fits better on the timeline]
transition era from prequel trilogy era to original trilogy era (galactic empire/rebellion)
Tales of the Jedi [takes place in different times throughout the prequel era (everything above) so the order of watching this show doesn't matter but it's best to watch it after the clone wars most likely]
Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Star Wars: Rebels
Andor [season 1 takes place same time as rebels season 1, 5 BBY]
Original Trilogy Era (Galactic Empire/Rebellion)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
transition era from original trilogy era to sequel trilogy era (new republic)
The Mandalorian (Szn. 1 - Szn. 2)
The Book of Boba Fett (Szn. 1)
Ahsoka [takes place after mando s2 and close proximity to mando s3]
The Mandalorian (Szn. 3)
Sequel Trilogy (New Republic)
Star Wars: Resistance [overlaps with the sequel movies so i suggest you watch the movies first before starting this]
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Extra, but not necessary
Star Wars Visions [no specific timeline. highly recommend]
Star Wars: Clone Wars [the 2d cartoon show, not the 3d. not necessary to watch. takes place during clone wars, obvs]
Star Wars: Droids [takes place after the bad batch and before the solo movie]
The Star Wars Holiday Special [takes place after a new hope and before empire strikes back]
Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure [takes place after empire strikes back and before return of the jedi]
Ewoks: The Battle for Endor [takes place after empire strikes back and before return of the jedi]
The Ewoks [takes place after empire strikes back and before return of the jedi]
Important things to note:
"BBY" stands for "before battle of yavin". "ABY" stands for "after battle of yavin". like B.C. and A.D., it's how the star wars universe counts their years for some reason. 0 BBY takes place during Episode IV: A New Hope, where the battle of yavin literally happened.
prequel trilogy was widely hated when it came out, mostly by toxic dudebros. the fandom HAS healed, and now it's regarded well and favorited often. sequel trilogy is widely hated and continues that way, for some reason. original trilogy is loved.
there ARE inconsistencies within the media. some media will contradict others and it's just something you gotta accept.
legends is a non-canon thing. idk anything about it but if you hear anything about legends, it's not canon to the storyline, though it's useful to pull resources and concepts from.
some people may or may not switch up the order of things based off of the years going off of BBY and ABY, and that's fine. this is just the list i use that i think is easiest to follow.
following up on the point above ^^ some of the clone wars episodes are out of order, timeline wise, but that doesn’t affect watching experience or anything. if you want to find the episodes in timeline order, i’m sure a bit of research will get you a list easily.
enjoy!

1, 6, 7, 8, 12 20, 23 for Star Wars asks part two.
1. which era do you find most compelling?
Prequels/TCW. I really love all the political intrigue, the environments, the characters, the muddled moralities.
6. which canon event do you most disagree with/dislike?
Does... all of episode IX count? I don't outright hate the sequels. I think they had really great concepts and characters. Unpopular opinion but I loved Ep VIII. But they fumbled, they squandered so hard. Like, just make a cohesive story, have a plan going in, ffs how hard is it?
7. what is your favorite fan art/work?
I don't think they are active on here anymore but I love the work of @fluseicsspacechaos so very much. @gimyohan is not on tumblr anymore at least under that name, but was intrumental in helping me learn to draw digitally. I'm also a huge fan of the ol Imperial Pin Up calendar by @pileofsith
8. if you found out you were force sensitive, would you want to become a jedi?
Hmmmm... I don't think I would excel as a Jedi. I'm a very passion-driven person. I channel my outrage at environmental destruction and social injustice into a positive thing through my career and outreach. Like, hell yeah we should all be mad about this, now lets turn that anger into action! There was an environmental crisis half a world away from me and I was given the opportunity to help so I immediately booked plane tickets and called my partner afterwards without like, any hesitation whatsoever. I just don't really like the idea of the Jedi bureacracy or title stopping me from helping someone. That's why I like Quinlan Vos so much.
12. would you rather fight a space battle or a ground battle?
Ground battle. I get motion sick so easily, but if I could manage it then low-atmosphere aerial
20. what’s your weapon of choice?
Electrowhip and blaster combo, gotta go all out with the space western aesthetic
23. what’s the most ridiculous thing in the star wars series to you?
Almost every planet being single biome, 1 or 2 sentient races with almost completely uniform culture across the entire planet. Especially the cultural uniformity.
Thanks for the ask!!

Hi, I’m Ellie, I’m autistic, Star Wars is a special interest of mine that recently came back and I have a an addiction to OCs.
So here’s where to find all my Star Wars children, most of whom I love very dearly.
Fair warning though, I have a lot of them:
Ep: I, II, III/Clone Wars
Lora Jinn- Jedi turned princess who never really left the Jedi order. Loyal, but uncertain of the future, she just wants to try her best and keep the balance of her head and heart. MC of my (currently WIP) fic, Natural Order.
CT-4571/ Blaze- A soldier in the aptly named Clone Wars. Wants to be so much more than a soldier.
Minerva Gage- a tragic and deceived Jedi turned Sith, wants to be at Vader and the Emperor’s side.
Ep: IV, V, VI
Mia Kenobi- My OG Star Wars OC. Daughter of two Jedi, future queen of a planet, a more natural leader than her mother and a fantastic spy for the alliance.
The Years of Peace
Ani Kenobi- Named for her paternal grandfather, Ani wants to be a Jedi like her parents before her, but fate has other ideas.
Ep: VII, VIII, IX
Amara Orden- A badass daughter of a queen and a Clone, who dreams of being a pilot in the resistance.
Ryder Gage- a boy trapped in carbonite for years who never asked to be born to a Sith. Strategy is his calling and he’s a value to the resistance.

Every few days I remind myself I actually paid to go to the cinema and hear “somehow, Palpatine has returned”. I paid for this.
But no I can’t bring myself to like episode VIII because 1. They committed a crime against Luke; 2. This is not to say I liked or disliked this part but the whole cassino arc was pointless to the story and seems to divert the focus of the movie to something unnecessary that consumes too much time, as in, narratively it makes little sense; 3. Rose and Finn as characters, nothing against the actors and they received unjust hate, but the characters are bad and their relationship is bad. 4. I’m sorry if this is crass, but the dark side of the force was showcased as an asshole in imagery.
However I will say I liked the feeling of hopelessness the story had during many points. But, again, ultimately ep VII is just a part of that soulless, corporate, unsubstantially artificial version of Star Wars. VII ticks all the wrong spots that make the sequels bad. The “Rey is nobody” plotline is nice because that’s what they did with Anakin, but the fact that they used “tell, don’t show” and then betrayed the concept in the next film makes it somewhat pathetic in hindsight
these are all fair criticisms and i agree with a majority of them. the casino subplot was very stupid and i think put there to fill screen time. i was always more interested in whatever was going on with rey, kylo, and luke. it was also the beginning of finn’s sidelining which i resent very much. he was probably my fav character in the first movie but disney wanted to appease the racists and just slowly cut him out, which is fucking criminal.
the biggest thing the ST suffers from is having no set idea. there was so vision to follow. and to be fair, the OT had this as well. george lucas didn’t originally make luke and leia siblings, and vader being anakin wasn’t something he thought of until making ep 5, but there was still a sense of love and passion behind it. the PT was always building up to anakin’s fall which is probably why i like it more. but the making of the ST kept having this weird cat and mouse “i’m adding this” “well i’m taking it out” “i’m retconning this” that makes it largely ridiculous. i wanted so badly to like it more than i did but they failed so utterly at making a good story.

Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in March
We’re about to enter the final month of the first quarter of 2023. Crazy! In addition to Holi (March 8), Daylight Savings Time (March 12), St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), Ramadan (from March 22 to April 21) and Women’s History Month (March 1-31) here is what’s on my radar:
Movies:
Scream VI
I wasn’t that impressed with last year’s Scream (let’s call it Scream 5 as I hate this recent trend of sequels that have the same name as the original), but I’m cautiously optimistic that this new one will be better, in which the characters leave Woodsboro for NYC. My prediction is this will not be as good as Scream 1 and 2, but will be better than Friday the 13th Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan. Opens 3/10.
Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman
Documentarian Morgan Neville (his doc Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was my #1 Doc of 2018) goes to Dublin following David Letterman joining U2′s Bono and The Edge on a concert performance in their home city. Sounds like the best episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman that never aired on Netflix: An icon interviewing icons in their city directed by an icon! Doc premieres on 3/17 on Disney+.
A Good Person
Zach Braff proved he was much more than an actor trying to direct with his excellent Garden State in 2004. Since then his directing has been hit or miss, but I’m hopeful about this new drama starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman opening 3/24.
Spinning Gold
Timothy Scott Bogart, the son of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart, wrote and directed this biopic about his dad. Even if this doesn’t live up to the premise, I’m sure the depiction of Kiss, Donna Summer and the Village People on this label is going to be interesting. Limited release on March 31.
Music:
The Smile Europe Live Recordings 2022
Last year’s debut album A Light for Attracting Attention from The Smile (the side project of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood) was my #1 Album of 2022. Now the band is releasing a limited edition live EP. Vinyl release on 3/10.
Lana Del Rey Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd
The 9th album from LDR is almost here. I out and out loved her albums Ultraviolence and Norman Fucking Rockwell! Here’s hoping this new album lives up to those masterpieces. Digital drops 3/10 and physical drops 3/24.
U2 Songs of Surrender
We haven’t had a new studio album from U2 since 2017. This new album is the band re-recording and re-interpreting 40 of their songs. While it’s not new music, I am exciting to hear how this group of 40+ years is going to re-do some of their songs. Album drops 3/17.
TV:
The Mandalorian (Disney+)
I was a big fan of the first two seasons of this Star Wars TV series that takes place 5 years after Episode 6 ( I named it my #3 TV Show of 2020). Season 3 premieres on 3/1.
Ted Lasso (Apple TV+)
The sports comedy with Jason Sudeikis as an American coach to a U.K. soccer team lived up to the hype! Season 3 premieres on 3/15.
Lucky Hank (AMC)
Last month when I covered Hasty Pudding Theatrical of Harvard University’s Man of the Year ceremony for Bob Odenkirk at the press conference, he mentioned that he enjoys mixing it up, i.e. doing a comedy after a drama. If anyone can do that it’s Mr. Odenkirk. Last year was the series finale of Better Call Saul (which I named my #1 TV Show of 2022). Now Odenkirk is returning to AMC, the home of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, for this lighter series (or perhaps I should say lighter than Better Call Saul) about an English professor at an underfunded college who has a midlife crisis of sorts. Series premieres on 3/19.
Film Festivals:
Boston Underground Film Festival
Boston’s film festival celebrating genre film is back. I’ve had the pleasure of covering this film festival since 2016! Fest returns to the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from 3/22 to 3/26.
Awards Season:
Awards season is slowly winding down this month with WGA Awards on 3/5 and Academy Awards on 3/12.
In a Category all their own:
Shamrock Shakes!!!
youtube
I look forward to going to McDonalds every March for these minty shakes!

"True enemy" is the latest Star Wars The Last Jedi poster by Rory Kurtz, featuring Reylo of course. And now I'm just realizing, when Ben felt Rey's hand on his thigh, he let go the pretorian guard's weapon he was holding and sneaked his hand back to do the same to her. Interesting.

now with the re-hype of star wars and all with the teaser for IX coming out, i think it’s important to let people theorise and have fun no matter what your own ideas or wishes are. with that said though, i’ve seen some pretty stupid reasonings for having rey be completely unrelated to anyone that i’d like to just give my take on, and also to share why i see so much more set-up and pay off in having her be related to a specific someone, if you look at it as a saga.
i think the first thing we should get clear about is what is the intention and role of this film that is coming out in december? well, after watching celebration and literally every interview with the producer and director they’ve always highlighted how they know this is the last installment of a nine movie saga (or three trilogies). i could paraphrase and link vids, but i’m sure you can just look up any interview for “rise of skywalker” and find that kathleen and jj abrams bring this up literally every time. this shows that they’re aware it needs to be a good send off and a fitting end of not only one movie, but more importantly a whole story stretching over 40 years. keep that in mind.
now i’ll answer to the critiques of rey as a relative of someone we know.
something that is always mentioned is that TLJ “confirmed” something about her origin... but it didn’t, it merely waved the question aside (not that surprising seeing as though rian johnson had his interest on mainly the kylo/rey dynamic). even the director himself said it wasn’t anything final, and that he made that choice to challenge the character of rey. furthermore, it was in the context of a very manipulative scene with kylo ren, someone who’s not seen as very trustworhty nor loyal and even has a motive to get rey on his side at that moment. that he’s the one to disclose the information that “rey’s a nobody” makes it even harder to believe and lying to the MC about family is an occurring theme in star wars (obi-wan to luke). another thing is just that wording... that is a way of speech used to tell that someone’s below, not worthy or irrelevant. her parents were losers who didn’t want to care for their child--- nobody or nobodies. something to realise is that the “info” (if it’s even true) that is given about her parents is minimal and might not exclude that her heritage is connected to someone we know. all in all, the first argument i’d like to rebuke is that they’d have to retcon rey’s identity -- there is nothing to retcon since nothing was c o n f i r m e d.
will making rey connected to someone by blood ruin her character, her strength? definitely not! and not for the reasons you think. people claim that fans want her related to someone cause she’s not enough by herself. as a matter of fact fans want her related to someone because that actually creates a red thread in the nine-piece story that is the skywalker saga, and makes her a more relevant and a better character because she has importance and a place in it. on the other hand if rey is a complete stranger with force powers who just happens to stumble into this family soap opera and solve their issues, that makes her bland and really just a deus ex-machina, a plot device and not a character. it isn’t about “inheriting powers and strength” which people assume, but it is about relevance and continuity. p o e t r y.
riding on my previous point this also proves that what people think is an important character to have - someone who came from nothing and got good on their own merit and not by last name - is not needed to be filled by rey. to be honest, i’m shocked people need this at all. people should know they’re watching the skywalker saga, ONE story within the huge universe of star wars. that doesn’t mean there aren’t other stories that involve other characters completely urrelated to each other, hell even this saga has obi-wan kenobi and mace windu who worked their way up to where they are. we have freaking finn and poe in the new trilogy!!! why this hysteria over rey being a complete stranger when we have so many good examples already, and when it gives nothing to the story if she is? there is only one film left of this unique saga, but many other star wars stories can be created later to fill this need of “no blood ties”. (even if i still don’t see this need when it’s woven into everything already!)
my last point will obviously refer to george lucas and his love for reoccurring beats and poetry that rhymes. if i may say so it’s the essence of the skywalker saga. i’m not going to say star wars, but this saga. the greatest set-up and pay off for this 40 year old story is to make rey a kenobi, because it captures everything perfectly -- reconciliation, redemption, surprise, love, dark, light so on. we start off this saga with obi-wan and his master, seeing him become a better jedi with his own hard work. he then witnesses the demise of his mentor, a story beat that’s been repeated with luke and rey. obi-wan goes on to join the jedi order and become very set in his ways, and a master to anakin, thus beginning the long skywalker-kenobi history. when anakin turns to the dark side kenobi sees it that he’s failed him and also himself - making him go into exile. that most probably would shake anyone’s previously held values. he feels guilty and reconnects with another skywalker - luke. he starts mentoring luke to prepare to fight the evil that obi-wan probably sees himself partially responsible for creating. luke saves vader/anakin and gets his reconciliation that way, but obi-wan doesn’t truly reconcile with anakin. many decades later we have the new protagonist called rey who seeks to find her identity, belonging and... reconciliation. at the same time as characters progress, there are still story beats being (reverse) repeated, this time the focus of the story switched from a skywalker to a kenobi. finding out her identity will give her the idea of what she has to do to reconcile with herself and lead her to the belonging she seeks, it’s all connected. now if rey discovers she is a kenobi it’ll lead her to ben solo-skywalker, and if she manages to turn him around to the light it will give way for poetic justice in the skywalker (/kenobi) saga. in her discovery that her forefather led a very lonely life and that the strict jedi codes could have lead to the fall of skywalker in the first place and failure for obi-wan would be enlightening to her character seeing as though she has the tendency to be overly independent and by herself. this could make her more open and realise that it’s important to have people around you and be open to love, attachments and that family / legacy don’t have to be the same.
