so it seems some of the ,, bad parts of the developing fandom are due to the fact some people seem to think touchstarved is an otome game. like not otome-adjacent which the creators definitely meant (they mention enjoyers of otome games may enjoy this one in the trailer description, but that's it), but these people are upset about the gayness and the pronouns and the fact it's more of a self-insert because they are judging it by otome standards. comments on an otome reddit thread complain that the cgs won't feature the mc due to their faceless nature. i was confused by this since i'm a huge fan of the arcana, a game where we NEVER see the mc, not even their hands. then i recalled other otome games where the love interests are kissing and holding a skinny pretty girl and i was like oh.

It is said to be 'removed' from the now story. Do you happen to know the reason for its removal? And do you happen to know about the scene that unlocked this cg? I am sooo curious but can't find the source or reason anywhere

This is something I actually, genuinely don't know. My best guess from the setting is that this is somewhere near the Palace fountain, and - well - that's it XD

I've seen an Asra sprite here and there from the extremely early version of the game with the same outfit, and I'm guessing this was the CG to go with it? (later to be replaced by the fountain cg we have now?) but that's just a guess, I could be very wrong :')

If somebody knows more I would LOVE to hear it, I'm pretty curious now too!!

Sooooo I’ve screen recorded the new tale on dorian (besides the paid scenes because babes I’m broke and my coins mean nothing here…😎🥲)

It’s through Google drive because of the file size. You’re all free to grab screenshots and share it and everything. This is so all you guys don’t have to download the app. Enjoy XD (yes. That’s sarcasm. Nothing really to enjoy here…🥲)

My Thoughts: (Slight Spoilers)

Gonna start off with saying it’s not as bad as I had expected, but also not great. Not for what it is.

The writing feels lacking and dry.

The characters feel very OOC- especially Asra. Very cold and rude and just not him.

The MC is just written as kinda dumb again.

The storyline is confusing and kind of hard to follow. Like I actually do not understand why this sequence of events happened.

It feels like it’s rushed, yet also spends an ungodly amount of time on filler scenes.

The lack of music makes a difference. And makes it less redeemable or even enjoyable.

THEY MISGENDERED THE MAGICIAN FOR THE WHOLE THING!

The whole thing is anticlimactic for what it was.

The ending was unclear.

The normally free CG (for tales) was behind a paywall.

And apparently all the scenes you unlock, you only unlock once and have to re unlock every time you play.

The game was still a little slow (technologically speaking). And as you can see, some characters sprites weren’t even fully there.

It feels like they just tried to shove things together and call it a story. It didn’t feel planned out at all. It felt like reading fan fiction. Not that fanfic is wrong, but you can often feel each authors own spin on thing. And it just generally lacks the arcana vibes. Now yes, it’s only one? original Arcana writer doing this with others, but still. It’s not that great. Definitely a bit above the other stuff on dorian, but nowhere near the level of the arcana or fictif.

That’s my general thoughts on it, but I’m bound to have more.

A/N: I think like many Gilbert fans, this CG just really struck me. I do not read the Japanese app so I only had the vaguest idea of what is happening but I don't think that matters too much. This is just hoping to capture a feeling, more than plot.

Gilbert x Reader

Word Count: 380

Your arms encircle his waist like the glowing rings of some distant planet. Your cheek presses against the supple darkness of his cloak, above his shoulder blade while your heart burns with the wild yearning to somehow slide right through the material and sink into that intangible coolness of his very essence. The sumptuous black fur of his collar brushes wispy kisses against the skin of your forehead, soft and luxurious. You wonder if his lips would feel as decadent.

He does not move away. His tall, lean body is still, although his blood rushes through his veins with the flare of emotion the press of your arms has ignited.

Is this possible? Are you really embracing him, holding him as close as the protective night sky does its beloved moon? The shadow of a smile crosses his beautiful lips.

He now knows you have missed him.

His expression softens, the sharp lines of his face melting into the radiance of starshine. It is a face schooled at wearing a mask of cutting smiles and one watchful red eye that flickers with a flame of dangerous intelligence, with the diamond glaze of resolve. But as he looks at you over his shoulder, that eye is full of rose-red, petal-soft tenderness. You who reached in, past the thorny brambles of uncertainty, to warm him with the sunshine of your affection, the gently curling tendrils of acceptance and understanding making their way between heavy stones and cracking the carefully constructed walls around his heart.

They crumble with every passing moment he is held in your arms until he finally turns, his fingers in their soft black leather catching your chin, tipping your face up so he can see you, drinking in the sight of you the way a believer would an effigy of the divine.

Your lips part, his name escaping your heart, riding the soft exhale of breath from your lungs.

He is surrounded by rubble, encircled by the dust of his defenses as they disintegrate. The sound of “Gilbert” whispered so delicately has undone him. He bends, a willow in the wind, enfolding you within the velvet shadows of his arms and captures your mouth with his, giving you a taste of cool, intoxicating ambrosia.

You sink into his arms, a soul chosen to enter Elysium by way of Gilbert’s immaculate kiss.

re: your arcana post - i literally don't even go here but i live for drama.... if you were ever to do a video essay or even just a write up in a post about the situation.... i want to know what happened, can't resist 👀👀

oh my goodd it's so eerie to explain it to someone who wasn't involved but this silly little mobile dating sim was just an initial passion project from a small team of employees of an indie game developer that was basically given six weeks to turn in something completely self-indulgent and it quickly got a backing on kickstarter around 2016-2017? beyond that it was quite a classic case of a project becoming more famous than its creators expected and it turns into a bit of a mess bc of their lack of experience. and by that i mean they got very close to the fans, and that's bound to open a can of worms. they used to make weekly q&as and you can't imagine what an exciting event that was, oh my god literally everyone was in a discord server losing their shit bc the devs had opened the askbox and we could ask the stupidest questions in the world about their characters and they would answer bc frankly they were very funny and the characters were all like... established in a funny enough way that it was so easy to make good jokes about them.

and i think what makes it very interesting is that the fandom was actually pretty small, but it felt HUGE. those q&as seemed like the most viral posts you could run into when you logged on tumblr but really most of them had a couple thousand notes at best, even when the arcana was at its most popular. it was literally like living in a small village where everybody knew EVERYBODY. if you posted something, high chance everyone in the fandom would see and reblog. it was like a hive mind.

also part of the reason why it felt so huge was bc everyone was churning out fan content like CRAZY, i don't think there was ever any fandom i've personally been in where i've seen so many people create so much damn stuff and frankly i think it's one of its strongest features. idk what it is about this game but everytime i revisit it inspires me so much, suddenly i wanna pick up my tablet after months, i wanna try writing again, etc. it's just wonderful at urging you to create and i have no idea how one even achieves that.

but yea the fandom slowly disappeared partly due to controversies, some of the creators were found to have been into some questionable stuff back in their not so olden days and they stepped away from the limelight, afterwards i believe a lot of the team stepped away from the game altogether. but it was weird because the controversies were constant, not just towards the creators but also within the fandom itself 💀 and given the huge volume of them they of course ranged from reasonable criticism especially regarding the representation of the characters of color, or the absurd microtransaction to stuff like 'his eyes are drawn bigger in this cg so the artists wanted to make him look like a child so this game caters to pedos actually' dkjgdkfj i saw some CRAZY takes and the bad faith criticism definitely overshadowed the reasonable voices in my opinion, it was not balanced at all. they stopped doing the q&as, the posts they made on their official tumblr became way more sanitized, and actually in a way so did some aspects of the game, and little by little it grew quieter.

and now it's... silent. but it's so near and dear to my heart, i think it's an absolutely wonderful game and what i love about it the most is how much it inspires people to create. and i think the reason why is bc unlike in many games like this (at least i think, i'm not sure cause i haven't played many) your character doesn't just suddenly meet every love interests. they have a connection to some of the love interests and a past they don't remember so it's very interesting to peel those layers back, BUT because it's your character the story stays quite vague about the past. so it's incredibly fun to speculate, to create a backstory, etc! that's i think one of my favorite things about it and it's not a coincidence that arcana went on to inspire some fans to venture into the visual novel genre as creators themselves.

and yea overall it just felt like a close positive community (well. mostly really, we are talking about a fandom on tumblr here so) and a super creative and inspiring one. the jokes were super fun, the art was top notch, the writing was also good. so yea i kinda miss it and it's sad to see how empty it seems now? like i see people from 2020 onward go 'ohh i just discovered this game' and i'm like... MY SWEET SUMMER CHILD... YOU HAVE NO IDEA.... YOU HAD TO BE THERE.... and ig i didn't really answer your question bc i kind of glossed over the drama but i went through the whole phenomenon bc i think it was. really interesting to witness 🫡

On the whole Dorian thing...

I have... I’m gonna say mixed feelings at best.

On the one hand, companies and properties change hands all the time. This isn’t new in the least, and yeah, sometimes it concerns things that have become near and dear to me. One of my favorite anime is called ‘Full Metal Panic!’, and through the years, in both animated and manga form, it has been handled by many different people and companies. With every change there’s always been some trepidation because the characters and the story are really important to me, and I want them to be handled in the best way possible, because I love them so much. So far, despite running into issues that has left that fandom with years between updates to finish the animated portion of the story, the faith that it would be handled as it should be has been thankfully repaid.

So with this experience, I honestly wasn’t too bothered to learn about Dorian having more tales added to the Arcana. But, that being said, I’m also skeptical as well. I will admit that most of this skepticism has come from basically the salty attitudes of everyone else in the fandom. There’s very few people I actually interact with in the fandom, even a little bit, because so many of them feel like they already decided anything else that comes out for it will be shit, and have their heels dug in about certain aspects of the game and its characters, and I honestly have no energy to deal with that drama when I’m just trying to enjoy myself. Sorry my dudes, but it’s true.

I do have my hopes that those fans who have been taken under the mantle of ‘ambassadors’ will do their part to keep the characters and any new content that comes out true to who they are without bias, but that’s also a factor on why I’m a little on edge as well. Also, like many out there, I’m admittedly not thrilled about needing yet another app on my devices to get more content. I don’t believe that’s a good decision, but I understand why they still made it. Dorian is a company, and the best way to draw more attention to other properties is by having more people download the app and look through their stuff. I get it, but that doesn’t mean I like it.

Still, I will give them a chance to prove themselves. It may sound like a foolish leap of faith, but as a fan in general of many things, Dorian will be given the opportunity to put their best foot forward. At the very least, they do still have Gabriella doing the CGs for them, so maybe that’s a hint things won’t be as bad as the rest of the fandom has already decided it will be. The worst that can happen is that the new stuff is shit, and all of us uninstall the app and pretend it doesn’t exist. It’ll be sad, but that’s the truth of it. My only hope is that if the new tales that come out are good, and if they are quality tales, that maybe Dorian will reconsider and also have them available on the Arcana app at some point in the future, if for no other reason than the fact that it would be nice to have everything in one place.

Whats wrong with the arcana fandom? Did something happens?!

So it’s a long story that I’m frankly too exhausted to go into detail with but essentially

Nix Hydra paired with Dorian, an extremely sketchy app akin to Episode. They have a tos that basically rips off people who write stories using the app.

For months we begged them to not, and they responded by getting very aggressive and not very respectful towards their fans.

Now they’re finally releasing the new content they promised would come on Dorian- starting with an Asra tale.

It is. Not very good. Not only is it not very romantic, there’s several issues both in terms of story telling and bugs.

- Despite the reader being ga, it is tagged as #straight.

- similarly, they he/him the magician (who is they/them)

- instead of coin scenes, now you have paid choices so to get the good ending and the new cg you have to pay.

- these choices don’t save, so every time you replay you have to buy every good choice again.

- my friend had a bug where Asra’s sprite kept trying to physically leave the screen, like Monika but instead of trying to break through to the player he was trying to get the fuck out of there.
