Although most Mesozoic mammals were rather small, a few different lineages produced some pretty hefty-sized forms – most notably the metatherian Didelphodon, the gondwantherians Adalatherium and Vintana, and the eutriconodont Repenomamus.
And now we've got another one to add to that list.
Patagomaia chainko lived towards the end of the Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago, in what is now Patagonia near the southern tip of South America. Known from some partial leg and hip bones, it was potentially the largest known Mesozoic mammal yet discovered – estimated to have been similar in size to a modern bobcat, roughly 50cm tall at the shoulder (~1'8") and weighing around 14kg (~31lbs).
Distinctive anatomical features of the bones indicate it was an early therian mammal, the group that contains both modern marsupials and placentals, but it can't currently be classified any more specifically than that. Mesozoic therian fossils are very rare in the southern continents, so Patagomaia's presence in late Cretaceous South America adds to their known range and diversity, as well as providing an example of surprisingly large body size for the time.
Without more material it's impossible to tell what Patagomaia's ecology was. I've gone for a fairly generic life appearance here, and while what's known of its joints and muscle attachments doesn't indicate climbing specializations, plenty of unexpected tetrapods still like to get up on tree branches.

Sulestes
Tumblr media
Sulestes was a genus of deltatheroidean mammal from the Cretaceous Period. Its type species is S. karakshi. The known specimens were found in the Bissekty Formation, Kyzyl Kum desert, Uzbekistan. Sulestes was the first and currently only identified metatherian taxon from the Bissekty Formation.
Its autapomorphies include the first premolar's oblique orientation relative to the dentary, an asymmetrical third molar, the presence of a fourth non-vestigial molar, and a double-rooted first premolar.
Sulestes is known from its holotype, a left maxilla fragment, as well as referred specimens. These specimens were originally labelled under "Deltatherus" and "Marsasia" and consist of a right petrosal, right maxilla, two left maxilla fragments, left coronoid process, several right and left dentary fragments, and a few isolated teeth. Sulestes is recovered as the sister taxon to Deltatheroides and Deltatheridium within Deltatheroida.

Working out the brain by going on a Wikipedia deep dive.
Anyway I would like to introduce you all to the Colugo!
Tumblr media
There are two species of these guys, and they’re colloquially known as flying lemurs (despite being gliding mammals, and also not lemurs).
The two species, The Sunda Flying Lemur (The image above), and the Philippine Flying Lemur (the image below) , are the only members of their Family (Cynocephalidae) as well as their Order (Dermoptera).
Tumblr media
Sunda Colugos are found throughout Southeast Asia, in Malaysia, Sabah, Singapore, Indonesia, Bali, and many adjacent islands. The Philippine colugo on the other hand, is only found in the Philippines.
The closest mammals related to them are Primates, and colugos are the sister group of the ANCESTORS of Primates. These ancestors broke off into Plesiadapiformes (the extinct sister group of primates), and modern primates. So in untechnical terms, colugos are the aunt group of us primates!
Despite being placental mammals (mammals with nipples that aren’t marsupials), Colugos reproduce very similar to marsupials! They give birth to their young at a very early stage in development, then fold their long webbed tail into a pseudo pouch to Store their young in. These babies become mature at around 2 to 3 years old.
Tumblr media
Colugos are arboreal, meaning they live in the trees, and their blanket like appearance is due to the webs of skin between their limbs and tail, which allows them to glide from tree to tree. Despite their fuzzy top side, their underbellies are completely hairless, which makes them appear like a naked man kite when gliding.
Tumblr media
Colugos were classified as Vulnerable in 1996, but were reclassified as least concern in 2008. As tree living species, they are particularly vulnerable to deforestation, and their presence is important as they make up 90% of the diet of the endangered Philippine eagle.
Lastly. Baby colugo is his own hammock.

Towards the end of the Cretaceous, about 69 million years ago, the most diverse and numerous mammals in the northern hemisphere were the metatherians, close relatives of modern marsupials.
And Unnuakomys hutchisoni was the most northern-living of all these metatherians.
About the size of a modern mouse, around 10-15cm long (4-6"), and with teeth that suggest it was a shrew-like insectivore, this little metatherian lived in northern Alaska in what's known as the Paaŋaqtat Province – a region with a distinctive population of endemic polar animals. At the time this area was located at an even higher latitude than it is today, around 80-85ºN, but due to a greenhouse climate it was also warmer, with no permanent ice and the average temperatures staying above freezing.
Unnuakomys was by far the most common mammal species in the Paaŋaqtat Province, represented by numerous fossil teeth and a few jaw fragments, and it also seems to have been the only metatherian living in the whole region. This may just be a preservation bias in the fossil record, but it might also indicate that Unnuakomys was uniquely specialized to endure the several months of continuous darkness each winter in its polar woodland environment, while other North American metatherians were restricted to more southerly latitudes.

I made a fantroll, Olixer, and wanted to draw some feralstuck! But Sollux got put into the mix and well... I can't help it, I love making OC x canon babies. (´;ω;`)
More info under the cut!
This is essentially an AU where the candy timeline isn't weird and everyone survived! Olixer is 24 in human years and Sollux is 26. Feralstuck has nothing to do with the AU, it's just always been a favorite AU of mine!

thought id do a little introduction!
my name is Theria, im a member of the home system and very possibly of the basement system ( @ulysses-but-somehow-more-transer ) im fairly new and still very much figuring myself out!
one of the first things we knew about me is that im some type of therian (my name was originally a placeholder that just stuck) and i recently landed on magpie (tho i also feel a certain connection to crows and corvids in general).
i dont know my age, i seem to be some form of child tho. its hard to translate my magpie behaviour into human years. you dont need to be particularly ‘child friendly’ around me, i can handle swears and sex jokes!
i love bugs and posting about them, general therian stuff and shiny things! i also generally share my headmates interests so if uly sent you here you already have things in common with me!
all types of therians, otherkins, otherhearteds, nonhumans, alterhumans etc are welcome here (as are humans lol)
see ya!! :3

They called the Knight Hunters headquarters the Backdrop, because of all it witnessed. A terrible fire, an act of treason, an uprising, the last stand of the vampires. Still there remains a spot on the cobblestone where the dread spell was cast that covered the world in darkness, the arrow biting into the Ancient's flesh too late. A storied history for a storied, and controversial, organization. For a few generations, the Knight Hunters became slack with their protections, their leaders more interested in the decadence of their ranks than ensuring the vampires did not take over once again. Sire Commandant Angelus Vim-Calyx changed that, fighting the corruption inside and out to return the Knight Hunters to their former honorable and trusted state. His son, Aurum Vim-Calyx, continues this "healing" of the organization. But there is still a long way to go - the bribery and backstabbing continues, and some say the current Sire Commandant is not the man his father was...
