This took me a little bit to do!
Do they count as flower pieces? I don’t know- they only contain dandelions, and even then- stylised ones.
I’m not sure what triggered this, but I had an urge to draw the Union Leaders like this. I tried to emulate the Art nouveau style- especially with the very thick outlines, and the curvy circular motif. Half way through I realised that it looked like stations of awakenings, but It was too late to change anything, and I still really liked it.
For those interested, I’ve done a lot more flower-related pieces: -Dark Road Students -Xehanort and Eraqus -Master of Masters and Luxu -Foretellers -Lauriam and Strelitzia -Siax -Lost Trio -Wayfinder Trio -Seasalt Trio -Destinty Trio

Happy Saturday, Clue Crew! I want to talk about the art displayed, next to Nancy Drew’s bed (as seen in Alibi in Ashes). I’ve already discussed (in a previous post) how Alphonse Mucha is featured, quite prominently, in several of the ND games. At a glance, one might think the three, framed posters, on the yellow wall, are his work. However, they were done by a contemporary of Mucha, named Paul Berthon. Like Mucha, Berthon worked in the Art Nouveau style, which is why it is easy confuse their pieces!
Paul Berthon…was a French artist who produced primarily posters and lithographs… Berthon studied as a painter in Villefranche-sur-Saône before moving to Paris… His study of the decorative arts influenced his print making, influencing the strong lines and natural details that guided his art. The vast majority of Berthon's lithographed posters did not include advertisements and were meant to stand on their own.
Tumblr media
The piece on the far left, of Nancy’s wall, is a print named The Salon de Cent (Salon of the One Hundred). If you are unfamiliar what “the Salon” is, in reference to art history, it was:
…the official art exhibition of the French Academy of Fine Arts (Academie des Beaux-Arts) in Paris. First held in 1667, its name stems from its location at the Salon Carre in the Louvre. For almost 150 years…the Salon was the most prestigious annual or biannual art event in the world.
The aforementioned print, was advertising Salon des Cent, which was a commercial art exhibition in Paris, based at 31 Rue Bonaparte.
The Salon sold color posters, prints and reproductions of artwork to the general public at reasonable prices. The Salon held exhibitions until 1900. Many of the posters advertising Salon des Cent exhibitions have themselves become collectors’ items.
Tumblr media
The middle poster of Nancy’s Art Nouveau collection, is another advertisement, for violin lessons (Leçons de Violin).
Tumblr media
The last poster of the trio is L’Ermitage.
L’Ermitage was a monthly, literary review that was published in Paris, France between 1890 and 1907.
The publication came under new management in 1896 during which time the literary review was reorganized. Subjects included in the magazine expanded beyond poetry and plays to also include that of the visual arts. With the expansion of subjects, the editors decided to commission Art Nouveau illustrations to grace the covers…
Art Nouveau reflects the ideals and desires of Paris at the end of the nineteenth century, which include happiness and indulgence in life and beauty without all the turmoil and problems of the newly industrialized world. In this piece, Berthon uses a woman with long, flowing hair and flowers as a symbol of beauty and purity. The print consists of just four colors in addition to the black ink.
L’Ermitage was included in the Les Maitre de L’Affiches series, or Masters of the Poster. This series was originally offered as a subscription for collectors, in which a different poster was mailed out monthly and which could be bound together at the end of the year. L’Ermitage was mailed out in 1900 as plate 227 of the series. These posters were greatly appealing due to their smaller, more manageable size, and the high quality of printing materials. The original larger posters usually had to be rolled up to store and were printed with a lesser quality ink.
A lithograph copy of L’Ermitage is currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California, the United States.
Tumblr media
That does it, for the posters, on the yellow wall! But you’ll notice a canvas, prettily centered over Nancy’s bed. This is the very recognizable Almond Blossom, by the one and only, Vincent van Gogh.
Tumblr media
You’ll see that the piece, in ASH, is a mirrored image, of van Gogh’s original. I can only assume this was done for copyright purposes, but that’s just conjecture.
Vincent loved nature. Blossoming trees, like in the painting Almond Blossom, were one of his favourite subjects to paint. He painted a number of variations on the theme: ranging from a small flowering sprig in a glass to lavishly blossoming trees.
Almond trees flower early in spring. The tree therefore marks the arrival of spring and the start of new life. And that was very appropriate in this case, as Vincent didn’t paint this work for just any old reason…
The painting was a gift for Vincent’s newborn nephew. The boy was born on 31 January 1890, and Theo and his wife Jo named him Vincent, after his uncle. Van Gogh was delighted to hear the news: ‘It does me, too, more good and gives me more pleasure than I could express in words’.
The painting became a treasured possession as soon as Vincent presented it to Theo and Jo as a gift. At first, it hung prominently above the piano in Theo and Jo’s living room. Later, once Jo had moved to Bussum following Theo’s death, the work hung in her and her son Vincent’s bedroom.
Following the death of Vincent and Theo, all of Vincent’s paintings passed into Jo’s hands. She sold a number of works during her lifetime, but Almond Blossom was so precious to Jo and her son that it was never to be sold. And that’s why to this very day, it is on display at the Van Gogh Museum.
For Van Gogh, painting Almond Blossom signified a new start. At the time, he had already been at an asylum in Saint-Rémy for almost ten months. Due to an attack of his illness, Vincent had not worked for weeks. He was now allowed back outside to paint, surrounded by nature.
Vincent worked hard, but that cost him dearly. Once he had completed the painting at the end of February, he had an attack that lasted for two months; his longest ever crisis. Once he had recovered, a new disappointment awaited: Vincent had missed his beloved flowering season.
‘If I’d been able to continue working, […] I would have done others of the trees in blossom. Now the trees in blossom are almost finished, […] I have no luck’.
Vincent chose an unusual perspective for Almond Blossom. He painted the branches from below and very close up. It is as if you are lying on your back on the grass, looking up at the branches above you, so that you can no longer see the entire tree. Vincent had seen this approach in Japanese printmaking and was inspired by it. These prints often zoom in on details from nature, and the image was sometimes cropped.
The subject itself also feels very Japanese, as blossom played a significant role in Japanese printmaking.
There you have it! I hope this information helps you appreciate ASH and Nancy’s room, a little more. I know I really appreciate the art, featured in the Nancy Drew games. I think it’s part of why I went into art history, to begin with! I owe a lot, to these games.
That is all. Happy scrolling.

2, 30, 45!
2. Who are you favorite Hetalia artists?
I followed kyuhu on Instagram long before I got back into Hetalia, so it was a joy to discover they're also on Tumblr! I also adore rod1832's work. I am a big fan of art nouveau and decorative artwork, and seeing their fairy tale series reminded me just how much I adore being an illustrator and I wish my work had similar precision and cleanliness. It makes me want to work on my compositional skills, understanding of color, and linework skills. There's a lot of other artists I enjoy, but these two were the first to come to mind!
30. BroTP? Headcanons?
Hmhmhmmmmhm I wanna write a fic where the Bad Friends Trio go to Medieval Times. Like, the restaurant,,, tournament,,, situation,,, thing in America. I haven't been since I was like 13 or 14 but I think they'd have fun. Gilbert would be an ass & jeer at the knights, especially in nationverse. Francis wins the tiara they usually give out to teenage girls Because He's Pretty and I want him to get the tiara. They all buy swords. This has been on my fic ideas list for a little bit now.
45. Most iconic canon line?
Unfortunately the dub was my first exposure to the show and I need to go back through the webcomics and sub. I also haven't watched the dub in a moment (shivers in fear... Todd Haberkorn)
Two lines that are iconic to me personally are:
"Is this a painting of your boyfriend or girlfriend or gender neutral chibi thing?"
My two friends who used to co-admin a Hetalia instagram account with me circa 2014-2017 (Deleted 2021) have a new discord server and funnily enough we're one dude, one gal, and one enby, so our server nicknames are "boyfriend," "girlfriend," and "gender neutral chibi thing." I'm gender neutral chibi thing.
"Spoiler alert, I want to pet cats. Want to pet cats. I want to pet kitties." - Greece (Beautiful World)
I've literally been quoting this for years now every time I'm hunting down one of my cats with a desire to pet and annoy them

my art haul from Artist Alley at MCM London :
The trio of witches ! By Hannah Alexander @hannahalexanderartwork
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loooooove Art Nouveau. I bought the Laudna print first, then came back later to complete the Witches triptyque !
Imogen ! by @onesmolhurts
Tumblr media
Look at those freckles !! HOT
Keyleth !! by none other than the wonderful Kit Buss herself, who was very busy all weekend I'm sure, but whom we managed to talk to on Friday just before closure. She was so nice !!!
Tumblr media
Keyleth looks like a little bit menacing and a whole lot sexy here, I love it, like she could ask me to follow her in a frozen land and I would be like "yes ma'am"
Another trio of witches, but this time under the menacing light of Ruidus ! by @caitmayart
Tumblr media
I remember seeing this piece here on Tumblr, and when I was passing by the booth I was COMPELLED to buy it, it's so beautiful !
And last but not least, this absolutely beautiful version of Laudna by Maggie Mikan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Story time : originally, I was going to bring my copy of The World of Critical Role for Marisha to sign, but when I bought this art on Friday, I changed my mind and decided to get it sign instead. And so after the autograph, 'no thoughts heads empty' me went by Artist Alley again, and showed it to the artist, who was amazed. We took one minute to scream over it together, and then they took a photo of me holding the signed art (yup that's me !)
Now, to get all of that wonderful art framed...

For #FroggyFriday:
Tumblr media
Frog trio in amber colored glass by René Lalique (French, 1860-1945), d. 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm); likely originally a button or stickpin, a guilded brass mount was later added to make it a brooch. Walters Art Museum
Lalique was one of the finest jewelers of the Art Nouveau period, but his movement into mainly glassworks was concurrent with the rise of Art Deco; this piece from 1911 is a good example of this transitional period in design.
Here is an even earlier example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frog necklace by Lalique, c. 1902-3, 18k gold, diamond, enamel, and glass. Private collection.
Although this fabulous frog necklace is still from within the Art Nouveau period, these chunky square frogs seem like precursors to the later Art Deco aesthetic, as well as Lalique's own shift from jewelry to art glass. As noted in the 2008 exhibition catalog for Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique, "Lalique's final designs in jewelry incorporated glass as the major element in repeating patterns of abstracted forms such as frogs" (p. 46; Lalique's frog necklace is cat.152, photo on p. 49).
BTW, that whole catalog is full of photos of amazing pieces, with lots of animal motifs! #BookRecommendation:

neon: roulette - gold suit with black and red concentric paneling. circular chestplate with the wheel motif. weapon is a staff with the wheelhead on top, which she spins to charge her finisher. makes a piano slide noise during transformation.
keiwa: bingo - silver with black grid pattern. chestplate is bingo grid, which charges with placements as he does more damage until he gets bingo (finisher charge). weapon is bingo gatlinger with ball projectiles.

Chaos trio (or buttercups) season 9 designs!!
I have quite a lot details in those, but I guess I can't really explain it in English
All that I can say is that their designs were inspired by the architecture styles and then swapped between buttercups. Mumbo's style is modern (or art nouveau), Scar's - classicism and Grian's - constructivism (while originally: Mumbo - constructivism, Scar - modern, Grian - classicism)
Maybe one day I'll make a version with original styles:>

come onto facebook: everyone posts memes (not even good memes, either, they’re all so crass and cheesy that making fun of them is easier than shooting fish in a barrel), or people are too staunch in their beliefs for their own good—and i learn nothing because it all too often has far too much zeal and not enough fact, plus it makes 0 sense or worse: it’s all rehashed from twitter and tumblr anyway. plus, i can’t post an opinion or a pic of myself without my dad going behind my back and turning it into gossip. reminds me of how a nursing home or the change station in the women’s bathroom smells. reminds me of the question “when are you going to find work?” asked in a patronizing tone. reminds me of all the times i’d be next to someone and they’re obviously disgusted by my presence even though they don’t say it out loud. i don’t get anything out of it other than feeling bad about myself.
come onto instagram: actual artists??? stories are actually fun. everyone is realizing how dumb reels are and thus, they’re turning to pix again. alex skolnick and i have it going on (!!!)—the man makes me feel good about myself and he’s always overjoyed to see me, of course i want to be around him all the time. jeff becerra of possessed and i are kinda buddies now? people on there actually genuinely enjoy my company without question and i can be vulnerable without worrying about hearing “are you okay???” ad infinitum. i encounter really amazing people, too, like alex and the rest of testament + his trio, joey and krista belladonna, rob cavestany of death angel, frank and charlie, glenn hughes (yes, THAT glenn hughes), blondie (yes, THAT blondie), and a bunch of others and i want to actually hug these people. and i’m actually looking forward to my art nouveau challenge in a couple of weeks on there whereas facebook may as well have just shrugged at the prompts.

Judo, 2004
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Make your holiday season bright by creating SHEEPY Christmas cards with me in just 15 minutes!
Here is number three in our series of watercolor Christmas card tutorials for 2023. We'll be uploading a new tutorial every day in November, and they will all be quick, simple and easy-to-do so you can fit them into spare moments or sit down with the kids or grandkids to enjoy a happy time together getting in the festive mood.
Christmas Card number 3 is a trio of woolly sheep, and if you have a bit longer than 15 minutes you can keep your sheep warm with some woolly scarves too!
Today I'm using a 5x7" piece of 100% cotton hot pressed paper by Meeden (scroll down for a discount code) but any watercolor paper that's at least 140lb will be fine. The smoother surface of hot pressed paper is lovely to paint on and it gives a different effect from the more commonly used cold pressed paper, and if you aren't familiar with hot press I really do suggest that you experiment it.
