Growing Tip: Red Kuri Squash Harvest

The last time I told you about my Squashes, a litlle over three months ago, I was very happy about my growing Red Kuri Squash, and hopeful about my butternuts...

It turns out no butternut squash grew from these beautiful flowers in my Bean and Squash Square, but my Red Kuri Squash got slightly bigger and heavier, and a deeper orange colour over the Summer and the beginning of Autumn. 

I kept watering it regularly, oftener when it was hotter, never directly on the vine (or the fruit), but at its feet. Over time, the vine browned; I kept the squash on it nonetheless. It seemed happy!

And today, I finally cut it from the vine and harvested my first (and only) squash, a beautiful 475-gram/1.05-pound Red Kuri Squash!

Given the proper Adventure growing Squashes has been over the past few years, I am absolutely delighted with my little harvest this year. I have learned, I have been patient and I have persevered, and I have a gorgeous little squash as a reward! 

And, as growing this one has taught me heaps more, perhaps next year’s crop will be even more successful!

Garden Report 23.06.08

I know I was going to give a berry report but right now I am so mad I could spit! I have been struggling with some night marauding creature(s) that has an infinity for digging (not dog like but food searching wild creature). It dug up some of my alpine strawberries ... I plant them back. It returns and digs more and deeper ... I plant them back but not sure what I am dealing with, I refrain from trapping. Now it has returned with spite! not only did it dig up the 150 alpine plants I had, laying them to waste, but also started in on the potatoes! Some not bigger than a quail egg, most tiny little marbles and pin head size. Not just dug up but the plants destroyed.  Ok, one out of two potato patches ruined but then ... Then, THEN (!) the asshat goes to the other end of the garden and destroys the garlic patch! WTF mate! I had about a month more before they could be pulled to cure but now ... Right now, I’m in the mood to kill something that comes into the garden at night to destroy. Calling on St Francis: get your homeboy under control or someone’s going to get whacked!

My veg patch is looking pretty shitty this year. My partner scalped it with the digger way back in January and I did not remulch fast enough, and then slugs killed all my tomato plants and most of my pak choi, carrots and beetroot. I let myself get all moody about that and focused on vehicles instead.

This is sort of a self-shaming post to see what I can spur myself into doing here in June.

I do have a load of young strawberry plants in there sweetening up my cereal each morning, and I have a handful of surviving broccoli plants, leeks and lettuce down the far end.

Never had a leek survive to edible adulthood so let's see what can be done this time.

just so you all know (in case you didn't): you can just pick fruit off trees/vines/bushes (provided they're not on private property and are ripe enough to be picked and you Know they're not, yk, poisonous berries or whatever) and eat them. the most you might have to do is rinse some dirt off with some water and check for rot/bugs (that may have previously gone unnoticed) -- and that's it. nothing else needs to be 'done' to the fruit.

didn't immediately recognise one another. i havent got an exact idea of how they reunited after getting out, but there were tears.

bonded in a very rare and unique way - they got to revel in the newfound joys of real life again. they got to eat delicious food, go on long, unobstructed walks in the real sun, be warmed by it, chew on ice cubes and shiver at the pain, listen to each other's heartbeats, listen to real music, read real books, smell soaps and flowers and sauces. they went to the supermarket together and read all the labels, and bought one of each type of fruit to try between them, and smelled all the candles, and touched all the blankets. spent a lot of time holding hands and kissing and i'm sorry to say, probably having sex, because holy shit, i'm real, you're real, we're real

now live together in ragatha's apartment, after pomni moved out of her small and confusingly-furnished flat.

both of them feel inadequate from time to time. this is resolved by a stern-but-loving talking-to.

sandwich likes pomni very much. pomni doesn't really get cats, but loves sandwich a great deal, and enjoys letting her sleep on her lap.

ragatha is very pleased to see her girls getting along.

ragatha cooks, pomni chops the veg. she often doesn't fuck it up

pomni cleans a lot as a 'thank you for letting me live here, i love you'. she's very much acts of service, ragatha is words & physical touch <3

they watch a lot of movies together. depending on how long they've been stuck, they might have culture to catch up on

ragatha wants to have a house with a garden one day. pomni starts germinating seeds from their fruit & veg like a weird science experiment. ragatha is delighted when she is presented with a baby tomato plant.

clothes are shared. ragatha's are bigger, but most of pomni's are ill-fitting anyway so it can go both ways. ragatha likes to dress pomni up in different outfits and have her do a little fashion show. pomni pretends not to savour the confidence boost.

Sebek

now sebek is someone that needs to be healthy due to his line of work, but that will typically come from meat as it will give him the calories he needs.

bu that doesn't mean he won't adore the food you produce.

like he would even help you in the patch as it can be a good workout depending on how big it would be.

and from experience veg patches can produce a lot of food and since he has a bottomless pit for a stomach he would eat any you don't.

when he first found out about it he thought that it couldn't be that hard to grow one, until he found out how much time you need to put into it.

sometimes he would make a shit ton of sanga's for lunch with the veg you make.

now if he found out someone destroyed it he would not be afraid to beat that mf.

because he loves you more than anything in the world. yes even malleus. so when that happens he would be pissed for you.

and if he sees you crying, whoever did it better start praying to whatever higher power they believe in whether it be a god or law enforcement that they find their body.

or they find a way to get their hearing back after he yells at them.

Malleus

now as he has a flower garden and you a veg garden you both give each other stuff from each other's garden as a way of showing love.

you and him would also spend many dates gardening with each other while talking about whatever comes to mind.

and in my opinion malleus doesn't quite like veg as he is a dragon and they eat meat, but that doesn't mean he won't eat whatever you give him.

now if you ever want to have bigger vegetables you can just ask malleus because he would either use magic if you want but if you don't want to do it that way, he would give you some knowledge on many ways to make them larger.

now if someone were dumb enough to destroy your garden he will have to be held back. and if they made you cry they no longer gonna be living as they have just made the love of his life die.

Leona

now leona hates veggies, it's a well known fact, but for you.

he still won't eat them. plain and simple.

but he will still help in the garden (somewhat)

like buying you equitment if it breaks, getting savannaclaw to help protect it from people, helping with making meals with them.

you know those thing.

now one thing he loves about this is the fact he can get cheka to help you out with it, which in turns keeps him busy and tires cheka out from annoying him.

now if someone were to destroy your garden he will hunt them down himself, and make their life a living hell.

and if that person is from savannaclaw you can bet that that person will no longer be allowed in the dorm as they will be banished.

Allotment update: I've weeded the plot!

After a wet and warm summer, the allotment plot was ridiculously overgrown with weeds. Here's a rather satisfying before and after of the work we've done to get it back to being a usable plot, plus some updates on our current produce...

You may remember from my previous allotment update that the last time I visited our allotment, I was overwhelmed by the size and volume of the weeds. They were half my height and as dense as rainforest (!) – you couldn’t walk through them and the raspberries were growing over the path so really you couldn’t even get into the plot. First lot of strawberries! I've had no time for gardening so far this year, so the veg patch is entirely overgrown... and full of strawberries from last year's planting. There are berries everywhere amongst the grass and clover. Thank you garden.

I’m awfully sorry to be profiting off your misfortune, but as someone with a lot of tactile affection to give, I’ve always struggled with good ways to show my partner Magcargo (his name is Cornelius!) how loved he is and how happy he makes all of us! I keep his blowhole clear of debris and scrape the sides of his foot clean from hardened lava when it creeps up too high, and he seems happy enough, but tales of your woes keeping the Slugma out of your garden has also given me a whole host of new flavors for him to try, and it’s great to have ways to put in the effort and show him he’s appreciated! (And if it’s not uncouth to ask… are there maybe any specific plants you notice the intrusive Slugma like best? No grass-type Pokémon being harmed, of course!)

Oh I don’t mind, every Pokemon has its place, though many feed on plants, specially the ones I’m trying to grow, it’s never a cause for long lasting anger.

The slugma line are actually a real fun little duo, I got no qualms with them even if they chew through my seedlings.

For ease I can suggest fruit and veg that they seem to prefer, seeing as sourcing specific plant matter year round is not always so simple.

Most are not picky eaters, their nature makes them very resourceful and adaptive, and often their high body temperature means they aren’t so focused on taste, more texture.

My poor vegetable patch gets ravaged by them, but they noticeably go for the really leafy greens or higher water content plants, so cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce for sure, they aren’t adverse to the brassicas, so broccoli and kale and the likes. Mushrooms also seem to go down well, though they can be a hit or miss overall. Worth a try though. If your buddy has a sweet tooth try strawberries, never met a Magcargo that doesn’t like em, like a built in love the whole species shares. It’s kind of a weird little thing they all have in common.

Dandelion greens and hosta leaves also go down a treat but are very seasonal. I personally like to grow pea shoots for salads, but they sprout so fast and grow in all seasons, so having a few trays of them growing is a winner. If you have a small space, a window ledge is plenty to grow your own for your buddy. Takes no time for them to get going, and you and your Pokemon can enjoy them together. They only need to sprout so you don’t have to think about feeding them or doing more than putting them in all of a 3-4cm layer of dirt and watering them now and then. Super easy!

But seriously, cucumbers. I hate to admit it but last year I had to buy a few, they wiped my whole crop out almost.

“Yes. Next question.” Mickey answers simply.

“No, let’s circle back. I want an explanation.”

Mickey stares in your eyes for a moment. He’s conjuring up the correct answer.

You’re both lying on the grass in your garden, beer bottles lying to the side of you. You were hosting a small get together with your friends at your house, everyone had left now. Leaving you and Mickey basking in the warm breeze brought by summers in San Diego, even at just gone midnight.

“I have a question.” Mickey finally decides.

“Shoot, my love.” You hum.

“Are we still able to communicate?”

“Hmmmmm. Considering you’re a human and I’m a worm; probably not. However, I think our love transcends those barriers so maybe.”

Mickey nods, taking in what you’ve said. “What if I found a way to become a worm as well, then we could both be worms and we could build a little worm life together.”

You squeeze his hand that is intertwined with yours, “that sounds nice.”

“I know right. Can I ask a question now?” He continues.

“Of course.” You lean up only to take a sip from your beer then lay your head back down amongst the grass.

“Would you rather we be a couple of worms or a couple of butterflies?”

“That’s a tough one.” You declare, “okay give me the facts.”

“We stay together no matter which one we become. But, in one we are worms and the other we are butterflies.” He answers, reaching a hand forward to tuck a stray piece of hair behind your ear.

He leaves his hand on your face, stroking at your cheek absentmindedly.

“Upon first inspection, I would say butterflies because they’re cuter obviously, but now i’m thinking about us living in a cute little vegetable patch as worms. Ooh could it be Bob’s veg patch?” You rant.

“The vegetable patch is wherever you want, baby.” He coos.

You nod in acknowledgment, “okay so we’re in Bob’s bountiful vegetable patch and we’re creating fertile soil so his vegetable’s can flourish as well as just having fun being a worm power couple.”

“Bet the other worms are so jealous,” Mickey chuckles.

“Totally. We’re like the Beyoncé and Jay-Z of worm couples.” You giggle.

Mickey rolls over and cages his arms above your head. He leans down and smushes his lips into yours. It’s kind of sloppy from both ends, and when you pull back breathless there is a string of spit connecting the two of you.

“Should we go inside, wormy?” He asks, rolling back down and pulling you into his chest.

You rest your head on his pec and look up to the moon.

“Five more minutes, wormy?” You tease.

“Fine.” He smiles.

“Why do we end up worms in all of these scenarios?” You ponder.

“I think it’s just testament to the idea that we’ll always find each other.” Mickey affirms.

You hum. “Sounds about right.”
