i am ENTIRELY convinced that miss TSwift woke up one morning in 2014, watched entire 2013,14 motogp seasons, then had a vision for what 2015 and beyond would look like, said ok i can work with that and wrote 1989 about rosquez
You already have all you had to do was stay on rosquez playlist and i love you it's perfect and yes! New bonus tracks are perfect for them!! but consider this this love as a rosquez reunion song, also like new romantics is so them sneaking around i mean the entire album is them!!
one thing about me is that i have a disease where i will listen to any given tswift song and be like omg! just like ______ character literally every time so i am FULLY on board here.... i will say i have largely assigned 1989 to other little fake people that live rent free in my noggin so i see them mainly as a RED, SPEAK NOW, or MIDNIGHTS couple.... like red/speak now have this insane undercurrent of being in your early twenties in a slightly toxic relationship with a guy that a. you are obsessed with and b. is slightly too old for you. which DID happen to my buddy marc.... and midnights is all about admitting HEY maybe i am ALSO lowkey fucked in the head (as they both areeee lol). this is also why i enjoy the 1989 songs from the vault for rosquez bc the PR statute of limitations passed and ms swift was like. okay this relationship was INSANE.... otherwise it is largely a lil too polished/glamorous for rosquez's specific swag... though i DO like this love for them! it fits! but YEAH! all of these albums are about emotionally devastating breakups. their rosquez slay.

So, what's your ultimate Taylor album ranking (TV bonus tracks included)?
Oh gosh that’s so hard! The thing is I have a few songs on every album that I love so so much that ranking the albums low that have some of my favorite songs feels so hard. I’m putting my reasoning here
Folklore
I literally like every song on folklore and have listened to it from start to finish multiple times. It’s a great hiking in the woods album and the storytelling is so great.
Red (TV)
I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for Red. It’s the only Taylor Swift tour I went to and I played the CD in my car a ton in my first real person job. All too well has always been a favorite song of mine but the 10 minute version is just insanely good!
Reputation
Until I watched the concert on Netflix I only really knew 2 reputation songs but seeing them performed I was blown away. It was also such a risk of an album, with a totally different sound and style and now I’m just super into it. I can’t wait for Rep TV
Evermore
There are just some songs on evermore than are SO DAMN GOOD. Tolerate it is one of my faves, especially seeing her perform it in concert. I love happiness, no body no crime, champagne problems. There are som skips for me so that’s why it’s lower
1989 (TV)
The original 1989 would have been lower on this list. I do LOVE blank space. I think it’s absolutely brilliant way of flipping that harmful narrative on its head and I just laugh whenever I hear it at it’s brilliance. Style and Out of the Woods are great, shake it off is fun. But THE VAULT TRACKS! Is it over now? Now that we don’t talk! I’ve always loved a good evisceration and these “if she has blue eyes I will surmise that you’ll probably date her” “Now that we don’t talk I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock, or like to go on a mega yacht, with important men who think important thoughts”. These were only left in the vault because Harry Styles fans would’ve been awful at the time
Debut
I love so many songs on debut! I first listened to Tim McGraw in freshman year of college on our going out playlist. Should’ve said no is so great, tied together with a smile, cold as you! Can’t wait for debut tv
Midnights
I embarrassingly only started listening to midnights semi recently, and love would’ve could’ve should’ve, you’re on your own kid, karma, vigilante shit, Bejeweled. I need to sit with it more and I think it’ll move up higher
Speak Now
I’m obsessed with Dear John. Like being that young and being able to point right at the psychological flaws of a grown man is impressive as hell
“You’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who ‘don’t understand’/ I’ll look back in regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can”
“All the girls that you've run dry have tired lifeless eyes/‘Cause you burned them out”
Fearless
It’s hard putting fearless this low because I love so many songs on it but they don’t pierce my soul as much as other albums
Lover
I’m probably being unfair to lover, im coming around to it more watching her eras tour performances
That was way more than you needed to know! Do yours now!

At this point, the newer rerecords have the vibe of aiming to complete the mission to me with the sprinkle of added fun looking back on the era. There's nothing wrong with this, I just think this is why I'm in the same boat where the amount of time I play the rerecorded og/deluxe tracks on repeat gets shorter and shorter. It just doesn't feel like she went to the emotional places she went to with Red on the others. I think Fearless had the benefit of being the first, so I didn't have anything to compare it to, but if it came out now, I think I might feel the same.
This time, I just have a small playlist of the vault tracks and the songs from 1989 that were already being played right before release to break up the 5 songs I really really want to hear so I don't get sick of them. Unfortunately, most of the new album doesn't make me feel the way I do when I listen to the original from 2014, but that's okay. Not every rerecording can hit you perfectly!
I generally agree that the mission statement of the re-records seems to have somewhat shifted from "faithfully recreate the originals as closely as possible" (which I think Fearless TV has done the best job at) to "closely honour the originals while making subjective artistic improvements and reinterpretations where deemed necessary" (which I think Speak Now and 1989 TV falls into the category of).

In preparation for ttpd release, I started to listen to your playlist of Taylor's songs in writing order and I love it so far! It really gives me an entirely new way of looking at the songs and the connections between them, so big thank you for your work on it!
I just have a few questions that I'd like to know as I'm listening (I'm on early fearless rn):
how did you order tracks that don't have a clear order? (iirc, a lot of the late albums we don't really know besides some earlier/later tracks). Is it based on vibes, or just completely arbitrary?
Also, how did you deal with songs that some time to write (like Innocent taking a few months, or her coming back to finish change after winning her first big award)? Is it the beginning date, or finishing it, or maybe somewhere in the middle?
Thanks a lot in advance <3
songs that took a while to write: i’ll put the all dates i know she worked on it— like, begin again is in there twice, because i’m fairly confident in both dates, but change is only when she finished it, because i have no idea when she started it. i also don’t put the same song over and over again, like all too well is only in there once even though we know of at least three drafts, because it would just be listening to the same song over and over. with innocent specifically, i took the six months quote as it taking her six months to get in the headspace to write it, not like she was picking it up and putting it down, so i only put it in once.
songs that i don’t know the order of: short answer, i put my best guess. it’s normally easier to figure out when she recorded a song, or at least what songs she recorded around the same time, so like, a lot of lover is just broken up by producer/studio credits (though i am fairly confident about the back half).
and then with folklore and evermore, it’s much easier to figure out the order than the dates— every artist has a different way they answer “tell me what it was like making this song” and aaron’s go to is “it was right before this song and right after this other song” which is so helpful— so like, folklore especially, i’m pretty confident that that’s the general order of stuff, even though i only really know cardigans date.
but, here are the stretches i’m not super confident about
* a lot of the first half of speak now is speculative, but not really in long stretches? but haunted, foolish one, superman, last kiss, timeless, and never grow up can all easily jump around the year (though, i’d put money on never grow up being written in early september 2009. not a lot of money, but like, still money. like $5). and then like, the speak now vault tracks in general are speculative, she did like no promo for it so who knows)
* wildest dreams-wonderland: all of these songs were recorded in october/november 2013, but we don’t know the exact order (wildest dreams is first because selena gomez said she was there when it was written and her schedule just doesn’t align with taylor’s that fall, blank space was likely written in late october based on candids matching studio stuff, the last three are just alphabetical order)
* look what you made me do-this is why we can’t have nice things: this is mostly just based on how long her hair was in the making of a songs
* cruel summer-soon you’ll get better: cruel summer is early cause she said she was just jamming with jack and annie and the song kinda fell into their laps so that sounds like she wasn’t intensely writing so i put it early, she teased daylight lyrics somewhere in the summer i believe so i put that pretty early, but aside from that like. these probably weren’t even recorded in a block they could literally be wherever
* i forgot that you existed-all of the girls: same proudcers, she said she started working intensely on the album right after tour ended and idk what else she was recording in november, so like. all recorded at the same time, guessing that it’s pretty early in the recording process, but that exact order of the tracks can change, and where they fall in the album too
* august-mirrorball: most of the jack stuff was done before aaron came in, but idk the exact order of these specific ones
* invisible string-betty: mostly circumstancial— like, epiphany is the first track taylor brought to aaron instead of the other way around, so i put it towards the end, stuff like that
* gold rush-no body no crime: all recorded in late september, but written beforehand, no idea in what order
* maroon-dear reader(/question-you’re losing me): again, all recorded within like a month of each other, no idea in what order besides question probably being in late november and youre losing me on december 5
* lavander haze-karma: pretty sure they were all written in early 2022, not totally sure in what order, beyond bigger than the whole sky being in march, snow on the beach probably being in april, and karma probably being last

some assorted music opinions under the cut given im not using twitter anymore yes you will have to contend with this regularly from now on (or as regularly as I listen to new music which isn't all that much)
alright let's get the big one out of the way
speak now taylor's version
i generally support the rerecordings as the statement that they are and I don't expect her or the records to sound the same (i think that's a foolish thing) but the production on this one sounds a little off to me particularly in the most punchy songs like haunted and enchanted (I like that she sounds audibly older though) the only song I'm disappointed by is back to december which somehow lost some of the magic I cannot however even begin to pinpoint why
vault tracks rank (better than fearless, much worse than red's btw)
When emma falls in love (lyrics are a bit cringe but it's a banger)
I can see you (originally my favourite rapidly becoming overplayed tho)
Electric touch (it's fine but it fades out of my memory the minute it stops playing)
castles crumbling (fine lyrics, okay melody, what a way to misuse Hayley Williams)
timeless/foolish one (they're okay but they're definitely not my style the refrain from timeless chafes at me and the whole concept of foolish one is too silly for me to battle against my dislike of its repetitiveness. They're passive listens)Su
surrender by maggie rogers
the story with this album is that I put one song in my anthony/penelope fic playlist (it is what it is) and became so obsessed with it I had to look into more and the album it is off of was actually great! it was very nostalgic sounding to me I sank into it and I was like this could've played in the princess' diaries and I wouldn't know a thing. really liked it. her vocals are very nice to listen to and I have done so repeatedly which is the highest praise an album can get from me. anyway some semblance of a ranking after a half assed listen but you gotta know it's not very trustworthy
begging for rain (THEE ballad sorry)
that's where I am (2000s ANTHEM????? the vibes are immaculate when every teen girl I looked up to on TV was a little grunge)
Want want (SO close to number 2 it's also a fucking banger)
overdrive (a good opener! it nails down the vibe early and contains some sonic (?) themes/devices that reoccur during the album and does them best (I'm thinking of the ahhs))
anywhere with you (this one is also very vibey it went into one of my character playlists right away)
horses (my second favourite ballad I enjoy the simplicity)
shatter (one of my favourite choruses this one's even more retro)
symphony (I rlly like the rickety synth (???) in the back. idk what it is it only strikes me as metallic in nature)
honey (I love the chorus verses are meh I like the instrumental)
be cool (this one is very retro but it sort of stagnates until the end which I like lots. I think it may be the interrupted synth throughout it all which bothers me some)
different kind of world (I enjoy the switch up it is simply not my fave)
I've got a friend (the only one I don't entirely like the verses are okay the chorus and the ending is so... did you write this on a ukulele)
assorted random releases
grl gvng by xg (ate up aespa. sorry.)
bite me by enhypen (good for a bg song the spoken bit is always jarring and a little cringe though)
seven by jungkook (I did not like it the mv SLAPS though)
super shy by new jeans (I liked this better than the other release but not more than ditto)
vampire by olivia rodrigo (very nice and singable loved the twilight vibes in the mv)
paradise calling by birdy (I KNEW she was gonna go retro with the album at some point it was the hair loved it obviously I've loved every release from portraits this one is very fun)
francesca by hozier (it's like he made this for 2016 me)
unknown/nth by hozier (in contrast this one's too flat to keep my attention long I know I'll like it when I get invested in the lyrics but I can't spare the focus now)
I haven't listened to the exo album or any NCT song lately nor anything from the Barbie soundtrack....... hopefully later?

Music Tag
Shuffle your ‘on repeat’ playlist and post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people! (sorry. i am sleeby) (if you would like to do it off the back of this and tag me as having tagged you please do)
Tagged by @goldenaltar
Try Jesus - Elle King (we're going to see The Chicks in November and she's opening for them so I was like 'got to get my pre-concert studying done' and then promptly started listening to Come Get Your Wife on repeat with very little else in between. almost the entire album is on here)
Rainmaker - Bruce Springsteen (every month or two I get gut-punch obsessed with one particular Springsteen song. This month's is Rainmaker)
Ohio - Elle King (see above)
Bummin' Cigarettes - Maren Morris (good song. it's a good song guys)
You and Me On the Rock - Brandi Carlile (okay this one's from the state of disrepair playlist)
Any Other Way - Bruce Springsteen (this cover just slaps)
Sugar - Maren Morris (I retroactively added this to the Lips Like Sugarcane playlist when I started listening to the album. That is not why it's on here just a fun fact)
Small Town Saturday Night - Hal Ketchum ("Bobby told Lucy the world ain't round / drops off sharp at the edge of town / 'Lucy you know this world must be flat / 'cause when people leave town they never come back'". lyrics i sing with intense relish)
Timeless - Taylor Swift (is it my favourite Speak Now vault song? no. is it somehow the one i've played most anyway? yes.)
The Bones - Maren Morris (yeah. this is also state of disrepair)

hihihi! I finally listened to the whole of speak now (taylor's version) so here's my rating!
_
🎶
-
Speak Now (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift
• Mine - Perfect
10/10, "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter" SO GOOD, the rhythm is just so danceable and her voice sounds so good!
• Sparks Fly - Amazing
9/10, Such a fun song, it just radiates love and romance, the drums and the guitar is so good.
• Back To December - Perfect
🥇10/10, So emotional, makes me want to scream it in the car, the story behind this song is so special and sweet, I love it.
• Speak Now - Great
9/10, Album title track, so iconic and such a fun listen every time.
• Dear John - Perfect
10/10, I scream this song. It doesn't have as much emotion compared to the original but what can you do? It's such an incredible and moving song.
• Mean - Good
6/10, I like this song, it makes me feel better about stuff, it's just kinda generic that's all but it's still on my playlist because I still really like it.
• The Story Of Us - Amazing
9/10, The "next chapter" and "the end" is like iconic but kinda corny at the same time. This is a banger though, I love the intro. "I've never heard silence quite this loud" is such a good transition into the chorus.
• Never Grow Up - Perfect
10/10, Just because I relate to it so much. The lyrics and the rhythm is so sweet, gives me "Slipping Through My Fingers" vibe.
• Enchanted - Perfect
🥈10/10, So magical, such a sweet song and really lovely lyrics. THE BRIDGEEEEE, THE BACKING VOCALS?!?! That beautiful siren song is so majestic, genuinely.
• Better Than Revenge - Perfect
9/10, I HAD to knock off a point for the lyric change, RIP the mattress line. It also noticeably has less emotion than the original and with a song like "Better Than Revenge", I need that anger! I still love it nonetheless.
• Innocent - Perfect
10/10, The reason she wrote this song is so courteous and so mature, especially that she was 19 when she wrote this. Truly incredible.
• Haunted - Perfect
9/10, I'm so sorry but point knocked off for having less emotion than the original. The original sounded panicked and desperate, this re-record just is missing that. Of course, I still love love love this song and I love the beat and everything. The vocals are incredible in this song.
• Last Kiss - Perfect
9/10, AGAIN knocking off a point because WHERE IS THE SHAKY BREATH?!?! It was such a little detail but it added SO much and I miss it. A devastating song that makes me question everything, which I think was the goal.
• Long Live - Perfect
10/10, So beautifully feminine and a great victory song. A banger to be honest, I really love it.
• Ours - Great
7/10, I like it, it's a very pleasant and chill song, it just doesn't stand out to me much compared to the other very strong songs.
• Superman - Amazing
8/10, A very cute song and a bop, love the beat, I love when Taylor includes a lot of drums.
• Electric Touch (Vault Track) - Perfect
10/10, FALLOUT BOY!!!! This collab is so good and I love it so much.
• When Emma Falls In Love (Vault Track) - Amazing
9/10, Speculated that it's about Emma Stone, this is such a cute song to make about one of your friends. I think it really reflects Taylor's character and it's a very sweet thing to do, especially because this song is so nice.
• I Can See You (Vault Track) - Perfect
10/10, Such a fun song, I love the music video. Great beat, great rhythm, great lyrics.
• Castles Crumbling (Vault Track) - Perfect
🥉10/10, The lyrics?! Wow, they're so powerful. I've seen people say this song reminds them of Eren Yeager and I must agree, and that's a compliment in itself. Taylor has embodied the notion of a hero becoming the villain and that's very moving, especially if she felt this way when she was 19.
• Foolish One (Vault Track) - Amazing
9/10, Damn it was kinda hard to listen to (in a good way), sad realisation song. I feel like it resonates with a lot of people and potentially me.
• Timeless (Vault Track) - Perfect
10/10, The metaphor is so nice, I love how she relates things to one another. It's really nice and this is a lovely song.
-
->🥇My 1st favourite
->🥈My 2nd favourite
->🥉My 3rd favourite
please for the love of god, do not attack me for my opinions

Bungie Weekly Update - 9/13/18
This week at Bungie, we prepare for our Last Wish. We’re deep into week two of Forsaken. Many of you have finished your hunt and served justice to Uldren. That was just the beginning. The bravest Guardians have already visited the Dreaming City and begun to uncover its secrets. Tomorrow, fireteams will make their first attempts at defeating our latest raid, Last Wish.
youtube
As with every raid, we will be watching the streams and cheering you on. The completion of the raid is not even the endcap of what the Dreaming City has to offer. There are many more mysteries to uncover once the final boss has been slain.
Raid Rewards
Last week, we showed you a preview of the new raid World First title belts. For more details, see our official rules. That’s not the only thing we have lined up for the most hardcore raiders to immortalize their accomplishment—the World First team is also guaranteed to all receive the One Thousand Voices Exotic, which is a rare drop from the final encounter.
If you think you may have finished first, make sure you loot the final chest after defeating the final encounter to ensure both your rewards.
After that, return to Orbit to finish the activity.
In addition to the extra rewards for the World First team, any player who beats the raid within the first 24 hours will receive the “Wish Ascended” emblem.
Tumblr media
That’s not all! Any player who beats the Last Wish before 10 AM PDT on Tuesday September 18, 2018 will have access to a personalized Last Wish raid jacket available for purchase through the Bungie Rewards program. Players who would like to participate in this offer need to make sure they complete the raid, claim the in-game Triumph, and then claim the code on the Bungie Rewards page BEFORE the weekly reset. You will have until September 30 to use the code to make the purchase.
Tumblr media
There are many more secrets to uncover in the raid and ways to showcase your accomplishments to other Guardians in Destiny 2. We’re excited for the race to begin and can’t wait to see who comes out on top.
Pumping Iron
Not into raiding? That’s OK. Lord Saladin returns next week to challenge you in the ways of Iron Banner! Things may feel a bit different for Guardians returning to the fray. For the first time in Destiny 2 multiplayer, your Power will matter.  You are now in an arms race with the Guardians you face off against, so make sure to equip your most powerful gear.
Game Mode: Control
Begins: Tuesday, September 18
Ends: Tuesday, September 25
Enabling Power advantages is not the only change coming to Iron Banner. Lord Saladin will present seven weekly bounties for you to complete. Each bounty rewards you with an Iron Banner-themed reward, and two of these bounties in particular grant powerful rewards. There are no exceptions: All Iron Banner-themed weapons and armor have the chance to be rewarded when bounties are completed.
The original Iron Lord will also be offering armor for direct purchase, as well as two weapons with unique rolls per event. You can gain access to purchase these items by completing their associated bounties.
Tumblr media
If you have tokens left over from Season 3, these may be redeemed in Season 4 for reputation packages. As with bounties, all Iron Banner-themed weapons and armor may be earned through reputation packages from Lord Saladin. To wrap up rewards, post-match drops are also returning to Iron Banner. Both Crucible and Iron Banner rewards will drop at match completion.
Tumblr media
Coming with Iron Banner at 10 AM PDT on 9/18, a reprised Crucible map will also become available. This map will be instantly available in Crucible playlists for all Destiny 2 players. Owners of Forsaken will also gain access to this map in private matches. We will reveal the map on Monday, so stay tuned to all of our social channels for a preview.
Beautiful Things
At Bungie, we strive to build beautiful worlds, and Forsaken is no exception. From the Tangled Shore to the Dreaming City, the weapons, armor, and characters are all meticulously crafted by our talented artists. We have a few of their favorites to share here, and each link below will take you to their portfolios, which offer more of their inspiring creations.

Aaron Wehrmeister
Dima Goryainov
Joseph Biwald
Ken Osuna
Ethan Scheu
Kevin Whitmeyer

Madison Parker
Ryan Gitter
Rosa Lee
Tyler Bartley
Roderick Weise
If you enjoyed this art gallery, check back next week. We will be featuring artists from our partner High Moon Studios.
Bounty Hunters
It’s about time for another Bungie Bounty. Instead of just doing one, we thought we would place several bounties on players from all around the globe. We are going to run several bounties on different players each week. They will span across all three platforms and feature players from regions around the world. Some will be playing Crucible, others will be playing Gambit.
The rules are the same. Find the targets during the two-hour blocks their bounty is active, and defeat them. If you win, you will be rewarded the "Sign of Mutual Combat" emblem.
We plan on running bounties from September 17 through October 21, 2018. We will keep you updated with weekly schedules. Here is who is up next week.
Tumblr media
Euro Gamers
It’s time for another outbound journey. For the second year in a row, we have an away team prepping to attend
EGX
in Birmingham, UK. We can’t wait to have another chance to meet Guardians from Europe!
Destiny 2: Forsaken
will have a stand on site with a chance to play Gambit or the Warden of Nothing Strike. The loot for all players will be a code to earn our event attendance emblem - you know, the ones you see available for auction online.
Here’s when you can expect to find us:
Developer Meet and Greets
Virgin Media, Destiny 2: Forsaken Stand
Friday, 21 September, 5:15 PM UK
Saturday, 22 September, 11 AM UK

Destiny 2 Hotfixes 2.0.2 and 2.0.2.1This week, we deployed Hotfixes 2.0.2 and 2.0.2.1 to players in Destiny 2. Cumulatively, these updates resolved a number of issues discovered post-launch with the sandbox and economy of Destiny 2: Forsaken, as well as provided rewards to players who completed challenges after the erroneous weekly reset on Saturday, September 8.
To see the full patch notes for these releases, players should follow the links below:
Destiny 2 Hotfix 2.0.2
Destiny 2 Hotfix 2.0.2.1
Additionally, following today’s Hotfix 2.0.2.1, some players may observe bizarre behavior in their Director screen. Affected players are encouraged to close their Destiny 2 application and relaunch. Players who continue to be affected should try clearing their console cache.

Prime and Powerful
Over the past week, we have observed confusion from players regarding the differences between powerful gear and Prime Engrams. Listed below is information that we expect will define these loot sources more clearly.
Powerful Gear
Awarded to players directly for completing eligible activities, challenges, bounties, etc. These will list “Powerful Gear” as the reward in their tooltip and can be pursued deterministically.
Provides gear as soon as it drops; does not need to be decrypted by a Cryptarch.
Provides a boost based on the player’s current best Power level.
Prime Engrams
Require the Prime Attunement buff that players receive from achieving character level 50 and speaking to Master Rahool in the Tower.
Can be earned randomly by defeating challenging enemies or by completing Crucible matches.
Prime Attunement will enter a cooldown when a Prime Engram is awarded. This cooldown will reset over time, and players may then earn another Prime Engram.
Appear in the player’s engram inventory when they are obtained; they must be decrypted by a Cryptarch.
Provide a boost based on the player’s current best Power level.
Also regarding Prime Engrams: Since the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken, we have become aware of an exploit that negatively impacts a player’s ability to earn Prime Engrams over time. After monitoring player concerns, we would like to once again state that players earning Prime Engrams under normal gameplay conditions should not expect to see the negative effects of this exploit. Happy hunting.
Gambit Suspensions and DisconnectsSince the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken, we have become aware of issues causing exceptional load times and disconnects in the Gambit playlist. To mitigate erroneous restrictions due to these issues, quitter penalties in the Gambit playlist have been temporarily disabled.
For information on the resolution of this issue when it is available, please stay tuned to our News page.
Destiny 2: Forsaken Known Issues
In addition to the items listed above, Destiny Player Support is tracking the latest issues reported by players on the #Help forum. Provided below is a brief overview of the latest known issues in Destiny 2: Forsaken.
Offering to the Oracle: We are investigating issues retaining the Offering to the Oracle in inventories. To avoid this, players should log into all characters in Destiny 2, or log into the Destiny Companion app, before acquiring the item. Players should also make sure their consumable inventory is not full.
WANTED: Combustor Valus Bounty: We are investigating an issue where some players in a fireteam don’t receive credit for killing the Combustor Valus and then can’t replay the adventure.
Various Trophies/Achievements: We are investigating issues with some trophies and achievements not unlocking for new players.
Crucible Kill Feed: We are investigating an issue where players can’t see their Crucible kill feed. Players may want to clear the console cache for a possible workaround.
HDR Issues: We are monitoring reports where players who use HDR are having issues.
Crucible Drops: We are investigating an issue where some players do not receive any loot drops for completing Crucible matches.
Hawthorne Clan Bounties: We are investigating an issue where Hawthorne doesn’t update her daily clan bounties.
Traveler’s Chosen Sidearm and Other Starting Weapons: We are investigating an issue where the Traveler’s Chosen Sidearm and other starting weapons cannot be dismantled or stored in the vault. Players are encouraged to not retrieve the Sidearm, as it will remain in their Kinetic weapon slot until a fix is deployed. Additionally, new players should reach the Farm before using a character boost so their weapons don't remain in their inventory.
For the latest known issues as soon as they are available, players should visit our Forsaken Vital Information and Known Issues list.

hey there everyone!! i’m zoe ( she / her, 20 & cst ) and i’m playing joan markov, eighteen year old daughter of of nike. she’s got a playlist and a pinterest  ---  as well as some general info under the cut. please feel free to hmu here or on discord if you want to plot!!
Tumblr media
joan never had much a need to think about greek mythology; she had friends growing up who were obsessed with the ancient histories, who devoured tales of greek monsters or roman legions or egyptian pharaohs and norse heroes  ---  but joan simply never had time for stuff like that. she’d been raised a loose mix orthodox catholic and roman catholic, due to being raised by her grandparents, but neither were first generation immigrants themselves; they never pushed the faith on joan. she had vague notions of a christian god and too much on her own plate to bother thinking of others. had she, it wouldn’t have been a leap to picture nike as the mother who’d left her on her father’s doorstep, a few weeks before the rising major league baseball star saw his shoulder ruined forever and his future deemed over before it began. he ran away from his failures and his daughter both, leaving them at his parents doorstep before rushing out east, good riddance. joan didn’t even see birthday cards from him ‘til she was seven, and that was fine. by seven she was already deeply in love with gymnastics, and a few years after that saw her tearing up track and cross country both. she was a phenom with enough energy that she felt like she had to burn the candle at both ends. she didn’t know what she’d do, otherwise. her grandparents wondered if it’d be a problem with her school, this excess of movement, but with how easily joan honed it on her own they didn’t question it too hard. all her winning felt incidental. she loved the harmony she found in her body when she was lost in the physical pleasure of pushing her limits, become better and better until she was the best, and only had herself to beat. when the judges’ have eyes only for her, when the finish line is the only thing in sight, she felt unstoppable. though joan’s father had turned tail and run years ago, she saw a lot of his sister and her husband and their kids, always coming by her grandparents’ and to joan’s meets. she never felt like she was missing much, with her father only a vague shadow on the edge of her life. she knew what was wrong with him  ---  it didn’t leave much room for her to question the whereabouts of her mother. when she was fifteen, she started to do really well in cross country. she was winning an award or medal at nearly every meet, and it came to a head after three wins in a row; her and her team were staying overnight in some small town in-between the meet and home,  and joan and the three girls she was rooming with were heading out to grab dinner with some people from the boys’ cross country team. they were outside a waffle house when joan suddenly found herself faced with  ...  well, a monster. she threw the medal still around her neck at the things eyes, aimed a sweeping high-vault kick for its chest, and ran back inside to hide out. it was a waffle house, so no one inside seemed fazed, but joan couldn’t shake the encounter. nor could she shake the sudden influx of other monstrous creatures lurking at the edge of her vision. they were outside her gym when saturday gymnastics practice wrapped, waiting in the woods behind the newest cross country route, seen running alongside the bus to team meets or her grandpa’s car when he was driving her to a competition. she tried, but she couldn’t outrun them, not really. a student teacher saw her trying to throw her change of clothes at them before practice, one day, and then joan had answers she’d never asked for. sure, it explained things. but joan thought she was better off not knowing.
once she knew, she knew. apparently, this changed things for joan’s mother, who had been hoping she could stave off her daughter finding out her true parentage for a little longer  ---  forever, if she had things her way. a few weeks after that student teacher helped joan decapitate a monster with a sword they’d pulled out of nowhere, joan swore, she had the most awful dream and a face to put with the idea of her mother. it was nice, for all of five minutes. and then it wasn’t anymore. joan had never wondered or worried about her mother so this payoff was not worth what it cost her. suddenly this woman was speaking to her, voice a familiar combination of tough, and proud, and sad, that she’d only heard in coaches before. the things she was saying with it weren’t at all what she’d have expected from her mom should she ever find the woman. apparently, joan had been intended as a gift to her father, and him running off after ruining his winning-career to boot was an insult to the highest degree for a goddess of victory. nike hung her head and held out her hands like there was nothing she could do. but there was a fierce glint to her eyes; and joan wondered when she woke if her mother had wanted to do anything else, or if it was just something to say to weaken the bite of a rule she’d created herself. one minute, joan was the most shining star anyone in her town had ever seen. and the next her own mother was placing a dream-curse on her  ---  as goddess mandated penance for the sins of her father, joan would be a child of victory who would win no more. it had pretty instantanous results. she was falling off the beam, sliding across the mat, leading face first into the uneven bars. she’d run a few minutes and find her feet so bloody and bruised it hurt to stand; she’d try to power through and find everything in her path working to trip her. she even sucked at her meager monster fighting attempts; her thrown objects missed by a mile and any hand to hand combat was a joke. it was hard to even buy time to run the other way. it was hard to even stay on her teams, never mind lead them. another dream gave her the path to a place for people like her  ---  confirmation with the student teacher told her it was real, and worth a shot. she was no longer an assured champion and was liable to get herself killed in her current state. monsters no longer looked at her as a formidable opponent, and with that went her last shred of protection. she told her grandparents and was relieved that the old catholics took the news so easily. it wasn’t hard for them to imagine their son messing up his daughter’s life so severely without even being present; it wasn’t hard for them to assign heavenly blame to all the changes in joan. they loved her, and they’d talk when they could, but the three of them agreed camp half blood was the best course of action for her. a month after she turned fifteen, she packed up a beat up suitcase filled with old running shorts and worn out shoes, sweatshirts and t-shirts bearing the logos of meets and competitions, all the things she felt like a liar wearing, and followed the poetic path her father had laid for her straight to new york. she kind of hates her mom for not trying harder. it seemed like such a bullheaded, sore-loser thing to do  ---  surely the goddess could tell that joan was as far from her father as she could get? joan had lost some, sure, had injuries that laid her up for a few weeks and seemed frightening. she’d still loved her family during those scares. she’d never run away. joan never deserved the curse now resting on her shoulders. and yet, her mother seemed to have taken some pleasure in the act of revenge. someone should have told her that joan’s father would have been pleased to see his daughter’s every victory snatched from her, too.
when joan first arrived at camp, she’d have been the first to admit she was a little pissed off at the world. before finding out what she was, who her mother was  ...  how much of a raging bitch her mother was  ...  joan had been pretty level-headed, pretty calm. she was still as excitable as ever, prone to bursts of energy she needed to act on then and there, but she’d always been driven by tasks more than anything, and powered by passion above all. she loved her body, the things it could do, the records she could break. she loved her family; her aunt and uncle, her cousins, her grandparents. for being there when her father wasn’t and looking after her so much she scarcely minded his stubborn absence.   she was a force to be reckoned with, sure, but more a mountain than a tidal wave  ---  stable and ancient over wild and vicious. the camp never saw a mountain in joan markov. when she arrived, fifteen and angry, fifteen and furious, lost and broken and ruined, she was ready to fight anything that stepped foot in her path. this seemed decent questing energy for a girl with something to prove  ...  until the realization of her curse fell across the camp like the best piece of gossip in months. joan could try and try and try and still find failure waiting for her. she trained for hours with a sword and could only land a hit one out of every ten attempts. she did fine on a punching bag, but give her a person and it was like her fists slid right off their skin. she was part of the home-front when disaster and tragedy swept the world of half-bloods and monsters she was suddenly faced with. she hated that she was sidelined because of her father’s cowardice, hated her mother even more for not knowing the man well enough to see that this curse did nothing to him, nothing at all. it felt cruel to live among heroes when she was just the tossed aside daughter of victory destined to lose forever, or until something more powerful and more benevolent than her mother stepped in and fixed her. clearly, she was broken without either of her passions to guide her, when she was so ruined she couldn’t find anything else to fill her time and take her energy. joan was as task driven as ever, but now that she knew she was destined to lose at any task she tried, she had no need to play it cool or calm. she turned herself into a wildcard, filled with passion and surging strength and no permanent outlet. let her quite strength fall away,  replaced by defensively sharp wit and challenge laced in every word, futile though she knew those challenges were.   she was decent at constructing battle strategies, for she still knew how to win  --- she was just incapable, literally, of doing it herself. she helped others with their quests and went on one minor one herself, as the brains only, when in the years before she’d known she would have been the star. it was fine. she was fine, with things. after all, it was fine for a fifteen year old to rage at the world and search for a cure that would never come. but joan was grown now, as useless as ever, and that was  ---  fine. in any case, she turned herself into the sort of person no one ever thought to question. even if she knew she could never win again, there was no reason people had to see that in the slope of her shoulders or the jut of her chin. since she’d long lost any invincibility she’d had in battle, she’d have it in spades standing still.

Vagrant Queen Star Adriyan Rae Discusses the Season Finale and Behind the Scenes
Adriyan Rae is the Vagrant Queen in SyFy's hit series based on Vault Comic's story Vagrant Queen.
It was divine intervention that led Adriyan Rae into a career in film. She attended the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and became a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist, before moving to Atlanta where she found her passion for performance. She landed her first role in Burning Sands, an independent feature that was produced by Netflix. You can catch her in roles on Donald Glover's Atlanta, BET's American Soul, and Hulu's Light as a Feather.
But lately, she's been playing a child-queen-turned-outlaw on the run from a galactic government as Elida Al-Feyr in SyFy's Vagrant Queen.
Credit: Diana Ragland
Maggie Lovitt (ML): How have things been going with quarantine?
Adriyan Rae (AR): Quarantine, for me, wasn’t really much of a difference. I am very much a person who is in my house all the time. It was just that all my favorite stores were shut down and they still are. It was just converting to home workouts that was the most difficult.
ML: Have you been bingeing any TV shows?
AR: Yes, prior to the last week I’ve been bingeing Avatar: The Last Airbender for the fifth time. Which I just absolutely love. It’s so deep. Since March I’ve watched Succession, The Outsider, and Killing Eve. I’m waiting for the last episode of that.
ML: Oh yeah! I think the finale is this week, isn’t it? I’ve lost track of when shows come out.
AR: I’ve been a part of the Black Lives Matter movement for the past week, so I haven’t really been watching much TV. I’ve been researching and fighting the good fight.
ML: So have you been out protesting?
AR: I have indeed.
ML: You went to school for Medical Laboratory Scientist, how did you get into acting?
AR: And Physician Assistant Studies. I got into acting by divine intervention. I swore I was going to be a surgeon since I was like five. I went to school for science and I was doing great and loved it. I graduated and I went to Atlanta, which is the black entertainment capital. While there, I was like, “Alright I want to sing.” In the midst of trying to get on with singing, I met with Epic Records and things like that.
I was introduced to acting on a video set. Where they were like, “Do you want to be the lead (in the music video)?” I was like, “Uh, I don’t know. No.” They told me I just had to act like this was my boyfriend and I was like “Alright!” I tried it and they told me I was pretty good at it and suggested I try acting. Literally, everything just aligned. I found a mentor who taught me Stanislavski and Stella Adler methods. And trained me in the fundamentals. And then I got on set and I was like, “Oh! This is what it’s like to be at work and have it not feel like work. To really love your job.”
youtube
ML: And then to jump into Vagrant Queen which is such a huge role. What was the audition process like?
AR: The audition process was a self-tape which is really cool. I love doing self-tapes. I got the audition and I was like “Oh! This is cool. It’s comedy, action, and drama. It’s like Guardians of the Galaxy!” I remember we got feedback pretty fast. I had just done another audition and I got an email and I swore it was going to be for that audition. But my manager was like, “No it’s for Vagrant Queen! Wow. They must really like you.” They had some notes, so we redid the take with the notes. And I remember not really liking that tape that much. I cried. I was like, “I really loved that one and now I’m not going to book it.” But then four days later I got an email that said I had booked the role.
ML: That’s amazing that you found out so quickly!
AR: Hollywood is a fast yes and a slow no.
ML: With the role of Elida, how much of your portrayal is comic-based and how much is a collaboration between you and the showrunner?
AR: Initially, with my audition, it was based on what I had available. I had the pilot and I had the comic book. It was really cool, because Jem (Garrard) merged the worlds really well. Because she merged it and I had the visual of what the world looked like, it was really easy. Once I was on set I really relied on Jem. I had built Elida from child all the way to the present, because I also had to play teen Elida. Everything from her favorite colors and foods. What she’s eating right now. What she used to love. All those things I’ve built. So I would talk to Jem and make sure that’s what she wanted and what was in the comic, because she loves the comic. That’s more so how we made the character and her arc.
ML: Were there any challenges during filming you weren’t expecting?
AR: Heck yeah! I was in South Africa, which was completely different than my normal life. I had never been outside of the country before. It was a challenge because of the time difference with family being so far away. It was a challenge of learning stunts. I did like 98% of my stunts.
Sometimes with the schedule, we’d have six-day work weeks. So we were working for six days a week, twelve hours a day. It seems like you’d have twelve hours, but that’s really seven hours to yourself for sleeping and showering. Sometimes you have to figure out if you can just eat at another time. You have to study and work out. It’s a lot of that. That was the challenge. Working that schedule. And making sure I had time for my mental health, for Elida, for stunts, for personal development, and working on auditions that were still coming in. Juggling it all was the challenge.
ML: What is your process for getting into character as Elida?
AR: Are you an actor as well?
ML: Yes!
AR: Then you’ll understand. By episode three or four it was really easy to jump into Elida. When I first got on set, there were those first day set jitters. Music is my sanity. So I started listening to music. Empowering music. That’s what really helped me get ready for Elida. It really set the tone for her confidence and abilities. It got me out of my head of being scared or worried. Elida doesn’t worry about that stuff. I would start my day off with eating my food, listening to my music. Then when I had to get my ears put on I’d take my music off, but once they were dry I put it right back in. Journaling also really helped me.
ML: Did you have a playlist for Elida?
AR: I have a playlist for every character I test for.
ML: I do the same thing!
AR: It’s really helpful. Especially when you’re testing. It’s just so hectic. You get there and there’s other people there and you’re like, “Wait, what are they doing here? I thought they liked me.” It’s a lot so it helps me focus on who I was trying to be.
Credit: SyFy's “Vagrant Queen”
ML: Looking online, I found that Vagrant Queen has a really solid fanbase. I asked some fans about their burning questions.
AR: Oh, I love them!
ML: Their number one question was about this burgeoning relationship between Elida and Amae. At the time of this interview, they just shared their first kiss. So, what can fans expect from that relationship in the finale?
AR: Some wild things happen in the finale. What’s coming is a possible strengthening of their bond. They both know where they’re at now. They both know exactly who they love, who they care about, and what’s important. They’re both in a good space. That is a trying time for interpersonal relationships to thrive.
ML: There have been several betrayals and twists with Elida's allies and close friends. How do you approach these emotional scenes?
AR: I approach them as human as possible. I take out the themes of Vagrant Queen. Take it out of being in space or about a monarchy. I make it as human as possible. It became more about “How does betrayal feel? What does betrayal look like? What are the different layers of feeling betrayal? What are the different layers of actual betrayal?” Since many of them are happening. I just went from there and really allowed those to be natural reactions to what was happening. I thought that would resonate the most, as it resonated most with me.
ML: Focusing more on the human emotions, rather than the epic space drama.
AR: Exactly! If you focus on, “My loyalists did this.” It’s not going to resonate as much as, “My father figure did this.”
ML: Do you enjoy shooting the fight scenes?
AR: Oh, I love it! Literally my team would be like, “It’s an action day!” I love the fight scenes. It’s so invigorating and cool to learn these choreos and see how they come out on screen. With this last episode, we worked so hard. With a lot of the fights, I didn’t have time to learn. With the karaoke fight, I had learned that in five or ten minutes. The port fight I learned in probably a half-hour. With the finale fight, I had like a week. I got to practice with Paul (du Toit) and really worked it out. It’s awesome, I love it.
ML: Do you have a favorite location or planet that they visited this season?
AR: I loved the aesthetic of the dunes. It was absolutely beautiful. It was hectic to shoot it because it was sand dunes. It can be really windy. It was a desert so it was hot and it was cold. But aesthetically it was beautiful. I really love the Winnie. It was an actual ship with an upper and lower deck. I used to hang out in my room and kick people out of my room.
ML: Speaking of rooms, what’s something you always have to have in your trailer?
AR: A candle. It’s so weird, but I always have to have a candle. I always have to have tomatoes. I have tomatoes on every set.
ML: Is that your go-to snack?
AR: Yes! Tomatoes and vinegar. It would be like one o’clock and I’d be hungry and they’d be like, “Do you want your tomatoes?”
ML: Well, that is a perfect segway into catering. I’ve always said I got into acting for the catering.
AR: Isn’t it great? You get to try something new. And I don’t feel bad for wasting if I don’t like it.
ML: What’s the best meal you’ve had on the set of Vagrant Queen?
AR: I didn’t really eat much at catering. I had a snack pack. I was in so many scenes and our schedule was so fast, I hardly had time to walk over to catering. They got me this snack pack that would go with me to each scene. I’d probably say chips were my favorite snack. In Cape Town, they have these different flavors of Lays chips. They had this chili flavor that was my favorite.
ML: What is something you always have to make sure you have with you on set?
AR: I have this book of Elida. That is like my Bible. It is with me everywhere I go. I always have to have that and my Air Pods. It’s her journey, I mark her out. It has everything she loves and doesn’t love. If there’s a scene where some food pops up that’s blue, but she hates blue food. I don’t want to miss that. It’s written down in my book. I need that so I can hit that beat and to incorporate that nuance. I can’t go anywhere without that book. The crew used to find my book and move it. I’d be like, “Someone has lost my book!” My blue book was a big thing.
ML: Did you come across any restaurants in Cape Town that you loved?
AR: Elida is vegetarian, so when I’m filming I’m vegetarian. It changed the restaurants that were available for me. Cape Town is known for their barbecue and really good meats. But they had great restaurants like Nü. I ordered from them a lot. They also had Nobu, which was right by the water and they had fresh food. It’s hard to find vegetarian sushi.
ML: So you’re very method when it comes to Elida.
AR: It’s a balance of being method, but being able to come out of it. When there’s episodes like five or six where she’s going through tumultuous emotions of loss with people dying, I have to be able to come out of that when I go home.
ML: Before we wrap up, what can you tease about Elida’s own personal journey in the finale?
AR: Elida finally finds her voice and shuts up other people.
You can watch the full season of Vagrant Queen on SyFy. Be sure to follow Adriyan on Twitter and Instagram.

A brief guide to cybersecurity basics
Last Monday, I got an email from Spotify saying that somebody in Brazil had logged into my account.
I checked. Sure enough: A stranger was using my Spotify to listen to Michael Jackson. I told Spotify to “sign me out everywhere” — but I didn't change my password.
On Wednesday, it happened again. At 2 a.m., I got another email from Spotify. This time, my sneaky Brazilian friend was listening to Prince. And they apparently liked the looks of one of my playlists (“Funk Is Its Own Reward”), because they'd been listening to that too.
I signed out everywhere again, and this time I changed my password. And I made a resolution.
You see, I've done a poor job of implementing modern online security measures. Yes, I have my critical financial accounts locked down with two-factor authentification, etc., but mostly I'm sloppy when it comes to cybersecurity.
For example, I re-use passwords. I still use passwords from thirty years ago for low-security situations (such as signing up for a wine club or a business loyalty program). And while I've begun creating strong (yet easy to remember) passwords for more important accounts, these passwords all follow a pattern and they're not randomized. Worst of all, I maintain a 20-year-old plain text document in which I store all of my sensitive personal information.
This is dumb. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.
I know it's dumb, but I've never bothered to make changes — until now. Now, for a variety of reasons, I feel like it's time for me to make my digital life a little more secure. I spent several hours over the weekend locking things down. Here's how.
A Brief Guide to Cybersecurity
Co-incidentally, the very same day that my Spotify account was being used to stream Prince's greatest hits in Brazil, a Reddit user named /u/ACheetoBandito posted a guide to cybersecurity in /r/fatFIRE. How convenient!
“Cybersecurity is a critical component of financial security, but rarely discussed in personal finance circles,” /u/ACheetoBandito wrote. “Note that cybersecurity practitioners disagree over best practices for personal cybersecurity. This is my perspective, as I have some expertise in the area.”
I won't reproduce the entire post here — you should definitely go read it, if this subject is important to you — but I will list the bullet-point summary along with some of my own thoughts. Our orange-fingered friend recommends that anyone concerned about cybersecurity take the following steps:
Get at least two hardware-based security keys. My pal Robert Farrington (from The College Investor) uses the YubiKey. Google offers its Titan Security Key. (I ordered the YubiKey 5c nano because of its minimal form factor.)
Set up a secret private email account. Your private email address should not be linked in any way to your public email, and the address should be given to no one. (I already have many public email accounts, but I didn't have a private address. I do now.)
Turn on Advanced Protection for both your public and private gmail accounts. Advanced Protection is a free security add-on from Google. Link this to the security keys you acquired in step one. (I haven't set this up because my security keys won't arrive until this afternoon.)
Set up a password manager. Which password manager you choose is up to you. The key is to pick one that you'll use. It's best if this app supports your new security keys for authentification. (I'll cover a few options in the next section of this article.)
Generate new passwords for all accounts. Manually create memorable passwords for your email addresses, your computers (and mobile devices), and for the password manager itself. All other passwords should be strong passwords generated randomly by the password manager.
Associate critical accounts with your new private email address. This will include financial accounts, such as your banks, brokerages, and credit cards. But it could include other accounts too. (I'll use my private email address for core services related to this website, for instance.)
Turn on added security measures for all accounts. Available features will vary from provider to provider, but generally speaking you should be able to activate two-factor authentification (with the security keys, whenever possible) and login alerts.
Turn on text/email alerts for financial accounts. You may also want to turn on alerts for changes to your credit score and/or credit report.
Activate security measures on your mobile devices. Your phone should be locked by a strong authorization measure. And each of your individual financial apps should be locked down with a password and any other possible security measures.
/u/ACheetoBandito recommends some additional, optional security measures. (And that entire Reddit discussion thread is filled with great security tips.)
You might want to freeze your credit (although, if you do, remember that you'll occasionally need to un-freeze your credit to make financial transactions). Some folks will want to encrypt their phones and hard drives. And if you're very concerned about security, purchase a cheap Chromebook and use this as the only device on which you perform financial transactions. (Believe it or not, I'm taking this last optional step. It makes sense to me — and it may be a chance for me to move beyond Quicken.)
Exploring the Best Password Managers
Okay, great! I've ordered a new $150 Chromebook and two hardware-based security keys. I've set up a brand-new, top-secret email address, which I'll connect to any account that needs added security. But I still haven't tackled the weakest point in the process: my text document filled with passwords.
Part of the problem is complacency. My system is simple and I like it. But another part of the problem is analysis paralysis. There are a lot of password managers out there, and I have no idea how to differentiate between them, to figure out which one is right for me and my needs.
For help, I asked my Facebook friends to list the best password managers. I downloaded and installed each of their suggestions, then I jotted down some initial impressions.
LastPass: 16 votes (2 from tech nerds) — LastPass was by far the most popular password manager among my Facebook friends. People love it. I installed it and poked around, and it seems…okay. The interface is a little clunky and the feature set seems adequate (but not robust). The app uses the easy-to-understand “vault” metaphor, which I like. LastPass is free (with premium options available for added cost).
1Password: 7 votes (4 from tech nerds) — This app has similar features to Bitwarden or LastPass. The interface is nice enough, and it seems to provide security alerts. 1Password costs $36/year.
Bitwarden: 4 votes (2 from tech nerds) — Bitwarden has a simple, easy-to-understand interface. It uses the same “vault” metaphor that products like LastPass and 1Password use. It's a strong contender to become the tool I use. Bitwarden is free. For $10 per year, you can add premium security features.
KeePass: 2 votes — KeePass is a free Open Source password manager. There are KeePass installs available for all major computer and mobile operating systems. If you're a Linux nut (or an Open Source advocate), this might be a good choice. I don't like its limited functionality and its terrible interface. KeePass is free.
Dashlane: 2 votes — Of all the password managers I looked at, Dashlane has the nicest interface and the most features. Like many of these tools, it uses the “vault” metaphor, but it allows you to store more things in this vault than other tools do. (You can store ID info — driver license, passport — for instance. There's also a spot to store receipts.) Dashlane has a free basic option but most folks will want the $60/year premium option. (There's also a $120/year option that includes credit monitoring and ID theft insurance.)
Blur: 1 vote — Blur is different than most password managers. It quite literally tries to blur your online identity. It prevents web browsers from tracking you, masks email addresses and credit cards and phone numbers, and (or course) manages passwords. I want some features that Blur doesn't have — and don't want some of the features it does have. Blur costs a minimum of $39/year but that price can become much higher.
Apple Keychain: 1 vote — Keychain has been Apple's built-in password manager since 1999. As such, it's freely available on Apple devices. Most Mac and iOS folks use Keychain without even realizing it. It's not really robust enough to do anything other than store passwords, so I didn't give it serious consideration. Keychain is free and comes installed on Apple products.
Let me be clear: I made only a cursory examination of these password managers. I didn't dive deep. If I tried to compare every feature of every password manager, I'd never choose. I'd get locked into analysis paralysis again. So, I gave each a quick once-over and made a decision based on gut and intuition.
Of these tools, two stood out: Bitwarden and Dashlane. Both sport nice interfaces and plenty of features. Both tools offer free versions, but I'd want to upgrade to a paid premium plan in order to gain access to two-factor authentification (using my new hardware security keys) and security monitoring. This is where Bitwarden has a big advantage. It's only $10 per year. To get the same features, Dashlane is $60/year.
But here's the thing.
I started actually using both of these tools at the same time, entering my website passwords one by one. I stopped after entering ten sites into each. It was clear that I vastly preferred using Dashlane to Bitwarden. It just works in a way that makes sense to me. (Your experience might be different.) So, for a little while at least, I'm going to use Dashlane as my password manager.
The Problem with Passwords
My primary motive for using a password manager is to get my sensitive information out of a plain text document and into something more secure. But I have a secondary motive: I want to improve the strength of my passwords.
When I started using the internet — back in the 1980s, before the advent of the World Wide Web — I didn't spare a thought for password strength. The first password I created (in 1989) was simply the name of my friend who let me use his computer to access the local Bulletin Board Systems. I used that password for years on everything from email accounts to bank sites. I still consider it my “low security” password for things that aren't critical.
I have maybe eight or ten passwords like this: short, simple passwords that I've used in dozens of locations. For the past five years, I've tried to move to unique passwords for each site, passwords that follow a pattern. While these are an improvement, they're still not great. Like I say, they follow a pattern. And while they contain letters, numbers, and symbols, they're all relatively short.
As you might expect, my sloppy password protocol has created something of a security nightmare. Here's a screenshot from the Google Password Checkup tool for one of my accounts.
I get similar results for all of my Google accounts. Yikes.
Plus, there's the problem of account sharing.
Kim and I share a Netflix account. And an Amazon account. And a Hulu account. And an iTunes account. In fact, we probably share twenty or thirty accounts. She and I use the same easy-to-remember password for all of these sign-ins. While none of these accounts are super sensitive, what we're doing is still a poor idea.
So, I want to begin moving toward more secure passwords — even for the accounts I share with Kim.
The good news is that most password managers — including Dashlane — will auto-generate randomized passwords for you. Or I could try something similar to the idea suggested in this XKCD comic:
The trouble, of course, is that each place has different requirements for passwords. Some require numbers. Some require symbols. Some say no symbols. And so on. I don't know of any sites that would let me use four random common words for a password!
For now, I'm going to take a three-pronged approach:
I'll manually create long (but memorable) passwords for my most critical accounts. This is the XKCD method.
For the accounts I share with Kim — Netflix, etcetera — I'll create new, memorable passwords that follow a pattern.
For everything else, I'll let my password manager generate random passwords.
This seems like a good balance between usability and security. Every password will be different. Only the ones I share with Kim will be short; all others will be long. And most of my new passwords will be random gibberish.
Final Thoughts on Cybersecurity
In this short video from Tech Insider, a former National Security Agency security expert shares his top five tips for protecting yourself online.
youtube
You'll note that these are similar to the Reddit cybersecurity guide I posted earlier in this article. Here are the steps he says to take to keep yourself safe:
Enable two-factor authentification whenever possible.
Don't use the same password everywhere.
Keep your operating system (and software) up to date.
Be careful with what you post to social media.
Do not share personal information unless you're certain you're dealing with a trusted company or person.
I won't pretend that the steps I'm taking will protect me completely. But my new system is certainly an upgrade from what I've been doing for the past 20+ years — which was, as I've mentioned, dumb dumb dumb.
And I have to confess: I like the idea of restricting my online financial life to one computer — the new $150 Chromebook. I'm not sure if this is actually doable, but I'm going to give it a go. If this works, then I may see if I can find a money-management tool that I like for the machine. Maybe then I can finally leave Quicken 2007 for Mac behind!
What have I missed? What steps have you taken to protect your online accounts? Which do you feel is the best password manager? How do you create memorable, secure passwords? How do you handle shared accounts? Help other GRS readers — and me! — develop better online security practices.

Week Of October 23, 2017.
The latest album by Alex Cameron, Forced Witness, is absolutely incredible.  I don’t see a situation where this does not end up in my top 10 list for 2017.  I have been listening to it non-stop since I first listened to it on 10/26 (8 times over 3 days, and 6 times on 10/27 alone – I know because I counted).  The album is an absolute masterpiece.  Every single song on the album is catchy, with impossibly infectious melodies.  The lyrics are borderline ridiculous and very funny.  You can hear a TON of classic influences in the music – pop, synth pop, classic rock, dark indie pop, Bruce, The Killers, New Order, among others.  Anyone influenced by ONE of these things is bound to make solid music.  Combine so many of those together and you get a classic album like Forced Witness.  And there are some guest appearances that will knock your socks off, particularly Angel Olsen on “Stranger’s Kiss.”  No lie, I thought it was Gaga singing when I first heard it (this is a complement). Do yourself a favor and run to your local record store and buy Forced Witness by Alex Cameron IMMEDIATELY.  You will not regret it.
One of my favorite bands ever is a band called The Gaslight Anthem.  To say that they changed and saved my life would be a complete understatement.  They’ve been on a hiatus for the past 2+ years, but thankfully their main songwriter, Brian Fallon, is still making music.  This past week he announced his second solo album, Sleepwalkers, due out on February 9.  The first single is “Forget Me Not” and I think it’s AWESOME.  I absolutely love it.  The lyrics are very relatable, and it’s easy to sing along to. If you’re familiar with any of Brian Fallon’s work (which you should be), then I think you’ll probably like this song.
Margo Price is one of my favorite singers right now, and she’s also an incredible songwriting.  Her voice absolutely soars.  Here’s an interesting article about her that was in the NY Times a couple of weeks ago:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/12/arts/music/margo-price-all-american-made.html.  Her new album, All American Made, is out now on Third Man Records, and is definitely a no-brainer in terms of albums that you should listen to.  Like her previous album, the fantastic Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, it was recorded in Memphis.  However, All American Made was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, whereas Midwest Farmer’s Daughter was recorded at Sun. Neither of the albums suffer from the different studios, and I think it’s really cool that she’s recorded her albums in Memphis.  It’s a great city with a TON of musical history.  It’s my favorite musical town in Tennessee, and I’ve been to a few of them.
Speaking of Margo Price, you should be on the lookout for her album Live At The Hamilton.  Although it was technically only available to members of Third Man Records’ vault club (of which I am not a member), you can find it online and a reasonable price (of which I did).  I love the album, and I think you will too.  Obviously, Margo Price has a one of a kind voice.  You can hear it on her albums.  The live recording is no exception.  Plus, Live At The Hamilton was recorded in DC on November 9, 2016, the day after a significant event occurred in America.  The recording really captures the mood at the show.  You can hear it and you can feel it.  But it’s also therapeutic.
I give props to those that were in attendance and to those that were performing for Live At The Hamilton.  I was supposed to see her in Philly the next night (November 10), but was not feeling up for it.  I had tickets but chose not to go.  It didn’t seem right to be at a show.  I also canceled the show I was supposed to go to on November 9 in Philly (Drive-By Truckers) for the same reason.  I had tickets but chose not to go.  Sometimes things happen that not even music can help you with.  For me, those things are very rare, but unfortunately do happen on occasion.
Anyways – bottom line. Make sure you track down Live At The Hamilton.  You are smart enough to be able to find one online.  And of course you will need her new album, All American Made.
A few other things you should probably now:
DMB has been on a year-long hiatus from touring. That’s bad news, as they are undoubtedly one of the best live bands ever.  However, there are a TON of live shows that have been professionally recorded and are readily available.  That number will increase by one with their annual holiday release, from the Gorge 2016. This actually was their last show before their hiatus, and the setlist is pretty solid, including “The Idea Of You” (an extremely underrated song), “The Stone” opener, Joe Lawlor guesting on “Rhyme & Reason” (this guy ALWAYS tears it up on guitar!), and my favorite DMB song, “Lie In Our Graves”.  And to top it all off, the show takes place at the Gorge, absolutely one of (if not THE) best live venues.
A bunch of Tom Waits albums are going to be reissued on vinyl.  How many? Try his ENTIRE catalog on ANTI-, all of which were remastered by him and his wife.  None of these albums are bad and all of them should be owned by you: Mule Variations, Glitter & Doom, Blood Money, Alice, Real Gone, and Bad As Me.  Real Gone is also going to be released in a remixed version.  I read online that the box sex Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards will be reissued next year.  If that’s true, that is amazing news, because it’s nearly impossible to find right now (unless you want to spend $430 dollars on Discogs  Ha!). With the exception of Orphans, which doesn’t have an official release date, all of the ANTI- albums will be released in November and December this year. That’s great timing, because Tom Waits makes great music for the cold weather.
The Killers are reissuing a few albums on vinyl later this year, including the tough to find (and underrated) Day & Age, as well as Direct Hits, Sam’s Town, and Saw Dust.
Here is a list of some of the music I’ve been listening to the past week.  Format: musician – album title, or musician – “song title” (album title).

I hope all of you have a great Halloween.  I recently put together a playlist for Halloween and I think it is really solid. I put in a lot of time making sure the songs flowed in the right order.  That’s really important to me.  Here is a link to the playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/joementa/playlist/41z2zrMaRe0Yp3howyjfvU?si=F8kAlBgI.  You can read some of the notes about it right here: http://joementa.tumblr.com/post/166842162133/happy-halloween-2017.  Remember to listen to plenty of Misfits and Danzig this week!  Have a great Halloween!
