ID: a Facebook post by Em Jay:
“Do any of you remember when I was posting about the recent scientific revelation that Cheddar Man was actually very dark-skinned and how pale skin is soooo much of a newer phenomenon (according to studies, pale skin began appearing in the human genome roughly 4,000 years ago as opposed to the previous assumption of 40,000 years ago) than originally surmised? A new genome sequencing study adds the famous 'Otzi the Iceman' to the list of incorrectly reconstructed (referring to the long-haired, pale-skinned rendering of him found in the Italian museum next to his real remains) ancient humans, as it has been revealed he was dark skinned and balding! The initial discovery of Otzi the Iceman in 1991 (on the Italian side of the Italian/Austrian border) was of enormous import for the scientific community for several reasons; Otzi is the oldest 'wet mummy' yet found and the clothes and equipment he was unearthed with are incomprehensibly unique as no other organic material from the Copper Age has survived. He also became popular for his 61 tattoos, which are the oldest preserved tattoos known to date. I absolutely love studies/revelations like this because (borrowing a lovely sentiment from co-author of the study Johannes Krause) they truly reflect our own biases in assuming what a person from that time looked like, and to use my own words, challenges many of us to re- examine the appearance of our ancient human ancestors in general. "The Iceman's new genome also reveals he had male-pattern baldness and much darker skin than artistic representations suggest. Genes conferring light skin tones didn't become prevalent until 4,000 to 3,000 years ago when early farmers started eating plant-based diets and didn't get as much vitamin D from fish and meat as hunter-gathers did, Krause says.
“As Ötzi and other ancient people's DNA illustrate, the skin color genetic changes took thousands of years to become commonplace in Europe. 'People that lived in Europe between 40,000 years ago and 8,000 years ago were as dark as people in Africa, which makes a lot of sense because [Africa is] where humans came from," he says. "We have always imagined that [Europeans] became light-skinned much faster. But now it seems that this happened actually quite late in human history!" (excerpt in quotations from Science News article by Tina Hesman Seay) Below are photos of Otzi, the first taken in 1991 shortly after he was discovered by 2 hikers, his naturally mummified body after he was carefully unearthed from the ice and his incorrect/false rendering with pale skin of 2011, and I hope to return to add a correct/more accurate rendering of him if/when a new one is made!”
Photos show 1) a pair of light-skinned, brown-haired hikers with brown beards, dressed in very 1980s clothing, with the exposed body of Otzi in situ in the ice where they found his body; 2) two photographs of Otzi’s preserved body from the top and back, 3) a close-up photo of Otzi’s preserved hand 4) an inaccurate reconstruction of Otzi in life, showing him as a light-skinned white man.

This is why I hate all those people who say stuff like “I would trust my child with a drag queen”. No one should trust a drag queen who wants to preform his act in front of minors.
A registered child sex offender has been charged after police learned he had been teaching dance to children in violation of his conditions.
Dwight Evan Chisolm, 31, a lifetime registrant of the Wisconsin sex offender registry, appeared in court on Monday. Local NBC 26 referred to Chisolm with “she/her” pronouns, and stated he was facing one count of working with children as a child sex offender and two counts of bail jumping, but, according to the Brown County inmate directory, Chisolm is specifically being held on charges of “intentionally photographing a minor without consent” as a condition release violation.
Chisolm, who is a transgender drag queen known by the name “Sno Wight,” was initially convicted in 2011 on charges of sexually assaulting a child and sentenced to three years in prison in Brown County.
Tumblr media
Upon his release in 2015, Chisolm was listed in official records as homeless and was therefore ordered to report his whereabouts to authorities on a weekly basis. But two years later, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections lost contact with Chisolm, who had stopped making the mandatory weekly declarations of his location. For the following year and a half, authorities were unable to locate him.
In December of 2018, the state’s District Attorney’s office charged Chisolm with failure to provide information as a sex offender and a judge signed a warrant for his arrest.
The next year, Chisolm was again arrested for sexual offenses involving a minor.
In September of 2019, he was charged with child enticement and sexual intercourse with a child after allegedly abusing a 17-year-old boy he groomed online through both the popular gay hookup app Grindr and Snapchat. According to court records, the victim had informed Chisolm of his age, and Chisholm had claimed to be 22 years old, despite actually being 27.
The teen told authorities he had twice met up with Chisolm, with whom he performed sexual acts in the garage of a property on Green Bay’s east side, which is listed as Chisolm’s residence. The property is located across the street from Green Bay East High School.
Tumblr media
Now, Chisolm is once again in police custody after law enforcement learned that he had been volunteering at Wolves Cave Studio in Green Bay where he had been teaching dance using the monikers “Coach Sno” and “Sno Wight.”
Local news reported that the owner of the studio confirmed that Chisolm had been volunteering there, but declined to be named. The owner told NBC 26 that she had been unaware of Chisolm’s history of sexually abusing minors and, because he was not a paid employee, had not thought to perform a background check.
Chisolm is currently being held at the Brown County Main Jail on a $5,000 bond ahead of a May 18 preliminary hearing.
Chisolm operates two Facebook profiles under the name “Sno Wight” where he can be seen advertising his dance classes for boys and girls aged 6 to 19. The promotional image contains photos of young girls in suggestive poses.
On both profiles, Chisolm has posted videos of children performing drag.
One video shared by the sex offender features a 13-year-old boy who was recently discovered to have performed at a party sponsored by an app designed for adult gay men seeking sex, called Jack’d. The child, Kingston Wells, performs under the name Ally Marc Jacobs and is being mentored by a gay porn model. Wells has sparked controversy on social media for frequently performing in adult venues.
On TikTok, Chisolm posts videos of himself that are mainly centered around his drag shows, which he both organizes and participates in, as well as his trans activism.
In one video, he can be seen dancing on a stage at an unspecified bar, wearing a long blonde wig. The event was part of a series of festivities associated with Pride Alive, an LGBT organization which was promoted by the Human Rights Campaign. In photos uploaded to the group’s Facebook page, children can be seen attending drag shows and handing money to the adult performers.
Another video of Chisolm available on his TikTok profile shows him appearing to threaten anyone who uses “the wrong pronouns” to address him. He has also shared a video wherein he twerks in his underwear, which is captioned: “It doesn’t matter what’s between my legs, I’m still a woman.”
In a series of videos posted in December last year, Chisolm rails against “black people discriminating against the LGBT community.”
“I don’t tolerate discrimination. I don’t tolerate hate. You will accept me and love me for who I am. All I do is bleed love and grace. It is you who make me the monster, it is you who make me angry,” Chisolm threatens. “I am a very loving and caring person, but when it comes to discrimination, I will spit in your motherf*cking face, b*tch.” Also at that time, Chisolm complained about being excluded from the LGBT community, saying he was “ripped to pieces” and “thrown to the wolves to be eaten alive.”
“In my own community I am excluded from things… a lot of people think I’m supposed to shut up and be swept under the rug,” he says. This he blames on on his history of sexual offenses, which Chisolm describes as “bumps in my past” that he is made to “suffer for every single day.”
According to court records, Chisolm attempted to be removed from the sex offender registry in 2021, but the motion was denied.
One month after he filed the request, he performed drag at the Tarlton Theater to commemorate the Trans Day of Remembrance as part of a troupe called Divaluscious. Photos shared to Chisolm’s Facebook account show him holding a transgender pride flag while standing outside of the building. For his advocacy, he was given a platform and interviewed on ABC 2.
Tumblr media
Drag performances and transgenderism are historically intertwined, with the designer of the transgender pride flag himself having attended such shows before claiming to be a woman and a lesbian.
As Reduxx has previously reported, Navy veteran Robert Hogge admitted to committing fetish burglaries, an offense that involves the theft of women’s underwear, and wrote disturbing erotic fiction on themes of age regression, body swapping, and children who do not age.

After Bud Light’s “ill-fated marketing campaign” that featured a transgender woman, it appears that Smirnoff, a brand of vodka produced by the British company Diageo, has made a failed attempt to keep its partnership with Texan drag queen and transgender-identifying woman Maxine St. James LaQueene quiet.
In September 2022, LaQueene expressed his excitement in joining Smirnoff’s “Show Up Show Off” drag competition through an Instagram post. Although the partnership did not make headlines at the time, the performer caused a stir at the Texas Capitol last week, taking center stage on various news sites.
LaQueene, among other protesters, began to chant during a legislative vote on a bill, SB 14, that would ban transgender surgery for kids under the age of 18. After Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, a Republican, demanded they be removed, a photo was snapped of LaQueene bent over while in custody, displaying a clear view of his backside and genitals to bystanders.
Detransitioner and activist Oli London made the connection between Smirnoff and LaQueene through a series of tweets last Friday, sharing images from the House floor as well as the original image of their partnership announcement.
“Hey @SmirnoffUS why do you have a brand partnership with this Drag Queen?” the tweet began. “He exposed his genitals while teens were present in an unlawful insurrection in Texas. He also posts disturbing fetish images of his genitals online. Is this who you want to be the face of your brand?”
In an email to Fox News Digital after London’s discovery, Smirnoff confirmed its partnership with LaQueene for a promotional campaign in 2022, but claimed he “is not currently a Smirnoff partner, and does not currently have any contract with Smirnoff.”
“Smirnoff’s partnership with LaQueene proves that Bud Light isn’t the only beer company with left-wing activists in their marketing department,” Joseph Backholm, senior fellow for biblical worldview and strategic engagement at Family Research Council, told The Washington Stand. “Their attempt to distance themselves from LaQueene proves the boycott against Bud Light has scared other companies.”
Despite their alleged partnership being annulled, London continued to post about Smirnoff’s relationship with LaQueene and revealed a promotional video featuring the drag queen in full costume. In the same tweet, he wrote, “Radical Trans Activist who exposed his testicles in front of teens in the Texas State House has a long-term paid brand partnership with @SmirnoffUS. Will the brand continue to pay this man or drop him as ambassador immediately?”
As repercussions of the events at the Texas Capitol continue to unravel, LaQueene was quick to defend himself. He claimed to have been attacked by conservatives for flashing bystanders, and asserted that he “did not consent” for a photo to be taken. LaQueene also claimed that flashing bystanders was simply “an accident” and he is “completely speechless.”
“People like Dylan Mulvaney and LaQueene need Jesus and therapy, not social status and influence,” Backholm concluded. “Corporate America may be slow to learn this lesson, but the market is helping them understand.”

Homophobia and absolutely no gaydar (Dracula related)
I had to remove someone from my Horror Comics Facebook group for some blatant homophobia.    I guess they (yet again) forgot who created that group...
They also went in a weird tangent about how straight Count Dracula is...  Apparently pissed off because I mentioned that Marvel's Dracula is confirmed as pan now. Many literary experts believe the character of Renfield was a reflection of Stoker's guilt for being attracted to Henry Irving (The actor who inspired Dracula's look in the novel).      The German production of Frank Wildhorn's Dracula the musical had grooms beside brides.     The 1936 film Daughter of Dracula was as gay as it could be despite the Hayes code.   It was so gay that a night club was opened in San Francisco named Dracula's Daughter in honor of the non-straight nature of that movie.  The song "Fresh Blood" in Dracula the musical has Dracula literally announce he wants Jonathan Harker and Mina. "You and your Mina, you'll live forever..."    Dracula was also interested in a man in Boom Comics Dracula: In the Company of Monsters (2011) where he stalked the male protagonist the way he does women in most films.    Steven Moffat's Dracula is bisexual. Dario Argento's Dracula (2012) was bisexual, according to the director.       There is a deleted scene from 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula indicating that Renfield thought Dracula would be his lover but he "Lost him to that pretty woman."    The 2004 Dracula the musical has "The master's song reprise" where Dracula is literally inches from kissing Renfield on the mouth.    Jerry Dandridge (who was confirmed as secretly being Dracula in the Fright Night 1985 novelization) had a live-in male "companion" in the original movie.     Marvel's Dracula is not the only one that had male and female lovers.    I can't imagine being THAT oblivious and having that low of a gaydar as to think Dracula was ever straight...       It reminds me of when I was in an Anne Rice fan group on Yahoo back in the 90s and a Louis fan couldn't accept that Anne Rice's vampires aren't straight.   I got an angry caplocked "MY PRINCE CHARMING IS STRAIGHT!!!" in response to a post where I pointed out that Lestat and Louis were lovers...  Universal Studios forbid scenes of Bela Lugosi biting men because they felt the character was already "too gay".  But yeah, sure, buddy, you go and convince yourself Dracula was straight this whole time.    Wait until he finds out about Carmilla. Or Dracula's son being bi in Castlevania (Netflix series).

Twitter censorship of Donald Trump, is it a violation of the “free speech” principle and democracy?
Hey guys! This week on my Digital Communities thread, I’ll be writing regarding political engagements on social media – more specifically, Twitter’s censorship of Donald Trump. Does banning Donald Trump violate the First Amendment of the Constitution regarding free speech?
This post will investigate whether or not this controversial figure should exercise their freedom of speech. It is important to explore the implications of Twitter's censorship on the political engagement of Donald Trump and the public sphere.
Before the Storm: Trump’s Uproar on Twitter
Trump made his debut appearance on Twitter on the 4th of May 2009 – a bland tweet to remind his followers to tune in the show Late Night with David Letterman as he was the show guest. As per all important figures, the start of their presence on social media were usually handled by their hired staff. But once Trump learned to voice his opinion on the platform, his Twitter insanity started in 2011 where he encapsulates his true persona for the rest of the world to see.
Trump was notoriously acknowledged on Twitter for his constant targeting of celebrity drama at the start of 2011 (Singer & Emerson, 2018). Back in 2012 when the Twilight lead actors broke up, Trump was fully invested in their relationship as shown on his Twitter account below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to The Economist (2021), Trump had tweeted over 46,000 times up until the start of 2021. Even when you purposely avoid his account on Twitter, the 45th U.S. President will take it as a challenge to creep up into your feed. Nobody tweets more than Donald J. Trump, not even a person going through the five stages of grief.
Trump’s Twitter Ban
Tumblr media
On the 8th of January 2021, Trump was suspended on multiple social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch and TikTok – but this post will focus on his Twitter ban. Twitter staff had banned his account and over 70,000 accounts for spreading acts of far-right extremism (Romano 2021).
The tweet that got him permanently suspended is his support for Capitol rioters who infiltrated the United States Capitol on the 6th of January 2021. The riot started due to Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was not legitimate when Biden won. According to Duignan (2021), the rioters smashed the windows and vandalised the offices in the capitol to show their rage against the election.
Does banning Trump Violate the Freedom of Speech?
Many audiences have debated whether it is fair or not to suspend Trump from his audiences following the incident, some claiming that it violates the First Amendment regarding the freedom of speech.
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”.
In simpler words, the First Amendment ensures you the freedom to speak without any consequences from the government. In my opinion, banning Trump on Twitter does not violate the freedom of speech because Twitter, or any other social platforms are not the government. The First Amendment has no leverage on whether or not these social media platforms must allow everyone to use them. Twitter is owned by a company which in turn makes it a private property with the privilege of making their own regulations on what people can do on their site.
Deplatforming Donald Trump and its kind
So, what is the rationale of banning Trump in the first place anyway?
All of these events that went down which resulted in the ban of Donald Trump and thousands of other far-right accounts on Twitter unveil one simple fact: kicking people off social media isn’t about free speech, it’s about deplatforming extremist communities from mainstream Internet spaces to decrease their influence and take away their ability to recruit violent behaviour as shown by the Capitol attack. Demonstrating zero tolerance towards bad behaviour by banning people off social media sets a reminder to everyone to just behave better online. One of the examples of how deplatforming helped reduce hate speech online is when Reddit banned multiple infamous subreddits in 2015 (Romano 2021). In 2017, a study done on the communities on Reddit showed a decreased amount of hate speech when the platform is regulated and is restrictive in allowing toxic spaces on their platform.
However, deplatforming does not fully cleanse the online public sphere from hate speech. These extremists will find a way, a different platform that is less restrictive and much laxer to continue their “prophecies”. It’s the very existence of these alternate channels that proves that free speech still exists and is not violated.
The Conclusion
To conclude this week’s topic, Trump’s evolution on Twitter in the end got him banned from the platform. It is important to recognise that deplatforming does not violate free speech, but it is an effort done by responsible tech companies to eradicate forms of hate speech, violence and extremism. Whether or not my opinion is correct, it is ultimately my opinion, and it is ultimately up to Tumblr to rationalise if I am allowed to spread my intervention on their platform.

The notion of building fences along portions of Finland's long border with Russia seems to have wide support, but Helsingin Sanomat reports that's not the case.
One of the few who are highly critical about the plans is researcher Jussi Laine from the Karelian Institute, according to the paper (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
Border fences and walls are expensive and they do not serve the purpose for which they are built, Laine noted. According to the researcher, if there is a will to cross it, people will figure out a way.
"People will get past the fences no matter the method," Laine tells HS, adding that those determined to cross will only find more dangerous methods and fall into the hands of smugglers and traffickers.
Therefore, building barriers could endanger people's lives and end up supporting organised crime, according to Laine.
"I'm not saying that Finland's border fence is completely useless, but I consider the disadvantages to be significantly greater than the benefits claimed," he says.
Stubb: Mistakes were made while PM
Former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb published a YouTube video in which he reflects on Finland's post-Cold war failures regarding Russia, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) writes.
In the video, the veteran politician admits he made four such mistakes while in office.
"I was wrong about visa freedom for Russians, Nord Stream, Rosatom, and about not being able to promote Finland's Nato membership as Prime Minister," Stubb says in the video.
Visa freedom did not genuinely improve Russo-Finnish relations and Nord Stream should never have been built, according to the former PM. He also adds that more could have been done to enhance Finland's nuclear energy sector. However, not advancing Nato membership while in office is perhaps one of Stubb's biggest regrets, the paper explains.
The longtime National Coalition Party politician Stubb served in multiple offices throughout his career including as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2008–2011 and Prime Minister in 2014–2015. He also served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Europe in 2011–2014 and member of the European Parliament 2004–2008.
"In politics, it is very difficult to admit your mistakes, because mistakes are not allowed. Still, many politicians, myself included, make mistakes," Stubb says.
Outstanding Young Person of the Year
The Junior Chamber International in Finland nominated Social media cleaning sensation Auri Kananen as one of this year's Outstanding Young Person of the Year title, Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun)reports.
This places her and two others in the broader international programme, Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP), which recognises young people who excel in their chosen fields or represent the best attributes of the world's young people.
Kananen has drawn a huge international following with cleaning videos she posts on the social media platform TikTok. The 28-year-old began cleaning people's homes for free while filming the process, a couple of years ago.
"Everything happened by accident. A couple of years ago, I started posting my own cleaning videos on Tiktok. Through that, I was contacted by a single parent of three children whose husband had committed suicide. She asked for help. Then, one weekend, I went to clean her house and uploaded a video on the subject to Facebook, where I told her story. The video got 13 million views," the social media star explains.
The 'queen of cleaning' has raised awareness about mental health as well as inspired appreciation for cleaners' work, which landed her the nomination, according to the paper.

'I blew the whistle on Meta, now I won't work again'
Arturo Bejar
By Zoe Kleinman, Tom Gerken & Liv McMahon
BBC News
A former senior staff member at Meta said Instagram is not doing enough to protect teens from sexual harassment.
Arturo Béjar, who is testifying in front of the US Congress on Tuesday, said he thinks whistleblowing means he will never work in the industry again.
He worked for Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, between 2009 and 2015, and again from 2019 to 2021.
Meta said it had brought in “over 30 tools” to support a safe environment for teens online.
Mr Béjar said that part of his job was working to help better protect people online. He thought that things were going in the right direction before he left the company in 2015. However, he first realised that there was a problem with it – when he saw his daughter’s experience of Instagram.
Speaking to the BBC in an exclusive UK interview, he said “shortly after she went on Instagram, she started getting unwanted sexual advances – misogyny, harassment at 14.”
He said: “When we would talk about this… it turns out that all of her friends were experiencing the same. I was shocked. She said there was nothing [she] could do, because [she] had no option to report it.”
Getty Images
Mr Béjar hopes that discussing his experience and that of his daughter in US Congress will help give lawmakers the information they need to take action.
“We’re in a very extraordinary time where there’s consensus across the political spectrum about the urgency and necessity of passing legislation that protects our kids, all of our kids,” he said.
He said it would be “easy” for Meta to implement a button specifically to let teens flag messages as sexual advances.
‘No transparency’
“I can speak first hand about how easy it is to build a button and a counter,” Mr Béjar said.
“I believe that the reason that they’re not doing this is because there’s no transparency about the harms that teenagers are experiencing on Instagram.
“And that’s why I’m coming forward right now… this is my retirement from technology.”
Currently, people can report Instagram messages for a range of reasons, including for containing “sexual exploitation or solicitation”.
A Meta spokesperson told the BBC it has created several features to protect teens online, such as implementing anonymous notifications of potentially hurtful content.
“Every day countless people inside and outside of Meta are working on how to help keep young people safe online,” they said.
“Working with parents and experts, we have also introduced over 30 tools to support teens and their families in having safe, positive experiences online.”
In 2021, Instagram introduced measures including making under-16 user accounts private by default and only letting older users message teens who followed them.
‘The least that we can do’
Mr Béjar, who was director of engineering at Facebook and responsible for its “protect and care team”, said tools implemented by Instagram didn’t go far enough, and were instead a “placebo for press and regulators”.
“They’re not based on the data of what people are experiencing,” he said.
“What you would expect to be able to ask them on this is, what percentage of teens experienced unwanted sexual advances?
“If you go into [Instagram] messages, I could not find any option that says: this is an unwanted advance.”
Getty Images
According to the whistleblower, building a button that teens feel comfortable pressing is “the least that we can do”, because he claims the “report” button on Instagram may be underused.
“Research we did in 2011 shows that 13-year-olds are uncomfortable with the word report, because they worry that they will get themselves or somebody else in trouble,” he said.
“Imagine you’re a 13-year-old, and you get an unwanted sexual advance – how uncomfortable that is, how intense that experience is, and there’s nothing that they can use to say: ‘can you please help me with this?’
“If that button was available, then there would be data about who’s initiating those contacts.”
Meeting with Mosseri
Mr Béjar said he gathered information about this and went to “the top people” at Meta, including Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, to discuss his concerns in 2021.
“I came out of that meeting feeling like Adam completely understood the issue, to the point where we talked about how you would design that button,” he said.
“But I was not sure whether they were going to act on it.”
He claimed that internal statistics showed one-in-eight 13 to 15-year-olds had experienced an unwanted sexual advance on Instagram within a week.
The BBC has seen documents which show Mr Béjar flagged this statistic to Mr Mosseri.
“I deeply felt that they had a responsibility now,” he said.
“I asked Adam in an email… what should be an acceptable number or percentage of 13 to 15-year-olds who receive an unwanted sexual advance?
“Social media should not be a place where a kid receives those kinds of things.”
Hundreds of lawsuits
Meta, and other social media companies, are facing lawsuits in the US over the impact of social media platforms on teen mental health.
In October, dozens of US states filed a lawsuit arguing Meta had misled the public over risks of social media use and had contributed to a youth mental health crisis.
Getty Images
At the time, a spokesperson for Meta said: “We’re disappointed that instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create clear, age-appropriate standards for the many apps teens use, the attorneys general have chosen this path.”
It followed an investigation in 2021 by several state prosecutors, after whistleblower Frances Haugen testified in the US that Meta knew its products could harm children.
Ms Haugen’s testimony followed a 2021 Wall Street Journal report leaking internal studies from the firm which it said showed teenagers blamed Instagram for increased levels of anxiety and depression.
Instagram published a lengthy blog defending its research in response to the report, and said it focused “on a limited set of findings and casts them in a negative light”.
“The research actually demonstrated that many teens we heard from feel that using Instagram helps them when they are struggling with the kinds of hard moments and issues teenagers have always faced,” Pratiti Raychoudhury, vice president and head of research at Meta said at the time.

8090 Jasper Lau partner takes charge of major banks
Rise 8090 provides insight into how billionaire money is playing an increasing role in venture capital. Family offices — the private investment firms of the wealthy — have more than doubled their share of venture capital deals in the past decade, and provisions are set to increase even more, according to research from SVB Capital and Campden Wealth published this year. Since early 2021, he has bet 8,090 on more than a dozen healthcare, energy and finance startups, most of them in the United States. He is a major investor in artificial intelligence company Luminous Computing, along with Bill Gates and Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick. Luminous raised $105 million in a Series A round in March, with plans to double the size of its engineering team. With about $200 million in assets, 8090 is a small company but it stands out as a competitor to major Wall Street banks in attracting ultra-rich families. attributed to him:AP “Jasper was the first person to bet on me when I started Luminous,” said Marcus Gomez, CEO of Santa Clara, California, which received about $30 million from 8,090. Problem, it’s one of my first phone calls, and it almost always has a solution.” Lau partially took a break from working on YouTube. As a high school student in 2011, Lau added FiscalNote Holdings founder Tim Huang as a Facebook friend after finding footage on the video platform of the award-winning entrepreneur. The couple spoke and kept in touch. Before starting 8090, Lau helped oversee early stage investments in FiscalNote that he said returned more than 200 percent. Hwang later introduced Lau to Kerem Ozmen, who through his family’s investment firm provided some funding for the $180 million purchase of FiscalNote’s CQ Roll Call media business from The Economist Group in 2018. While FiscalNote shares have fallen since it began trading in August after its merger with Duddell Street Acquisition Corp, the 8090 posted a 62 percent gain on an $18 million convertible bond maturing in July, Lau said. With recession fears mounting, Lau is confident his company’s small size and wealthy backers give it an edge, even if some tech entrepreneurs may prefer taking money from giants like Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz that have survived previous recessions. While the 8090 would normally raise capital on a deal-by-deal basis, it is now finalizing a fund focused on tech founders and increasingly focused on debt transactions as startups avoid separating from equity in this year’s recession. “One might think things are slowing down, but they are accelerating,” Lau said. “Our ability to be agile and fast on our feet at 8,090 gives us an advantage over other venture capital firms that have to go through a lot of bureaucracy.” loading After initially focusing on the younger members of billionaire families, the 8090 now also works with the older generations on their venture investments as well as other areas, such as philanthropy. The company, which has a few employees in Los Angeles and New York, may be seeking more super-rich supporters in the world, but they have to meet specific criteria. “It’s really about finding culturally appropriate families that will be long-term partners with us,” Lau said. “We want families who can actually add more color to what we’ve already put on our canvas.” Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Alphabetics - Supernova
Hey! First song of the month! Every Sunday, as I mentioned on the previous post, will have a song made in Costa Rica, in celebration of our independence day.
This week's track is called 'Supernova' by the dance-punk band 'Alphabetics'. So, what about these guys?
About the band
Alphabetics, as said already, is a dance-punk band from Costa Rica, formed in 2011 by:
Jhavier Sánchez (guitar and keyboards), Bryan Rothschild (bass), Alejandro Pacheco (guitar and vocals) and, Alexandro Baviera (drums).
Alejandro Pacheco, known as 'Pana' is also the singer of the band 'Polär' (which I realized a while ago and everything clicked with my thought of "hey, Polär sounds kinda like Alphabetics but in Spanish."
In 2012, they released their first EP, titled 'Selfdestructive', which gained traction as its tracks 'Frutista' and 'Bistek' became popular. 'Bistek' was actually the intro for the now disappeared 'Canal 9' show 'Untitled'. On the other hand, 'Frutista' was featured on TV and radio, and catapulted the band to the spotlight.
On 2015, they released their first feature length album 'Animal Planets', which also contains some well known songs like '25', 'Paint Paint Paint' and of course, 'Supernova'.
The band has played at several Costarican festivals such as Rock Fest, Festival Imperial and Holi One Colour Festival; as well as international festivals like Culture Collide (US), Canadian Music Festival Toronto (CA), , Boiler Room (US) and Red Gorilla (US).
They have also played with national bands like VOODOO, 424, Percance and República Fortuna, but also Panteón Rococó (MX), Cultura Profética (PR) and Bersuit Vergarabat (ARG).
The bassist, Bryan Roth, was supposedly leaving alphabetics, however it seems that either he didn't leave, or it was just a hiatus.
But what about 'Supernova' itself?
About the song
'Supernova' starts with a rhythm that can sound a bit ambiguous on its own. Could be on 4/4 or could be on 6/8, however it's clearly revealed seconds later that it definitely is a 4 to the floor, with a disco vibe, but also Pana's raspy and powerful vocals, which contrast with the music in a really cool way and mark that very specific Alphabetics vibe.
You can hear how the song's energy fluctuates and has high and low points, the storm of winter and the sunshine and peace of spring, just to return to the lightning and power and end on a dry, decisive note.
Supernova was also featured on a Sofar Sounds Session, what an honor!
Any meaning?
Its lyrics describe, at least for me, how a guy does everything he can for a significant other, even if it seems like they don't appreciate it much.
But they realize about that effort and act surprised, which itches the guy a bit, and he therefore tells them to "not look at him with those eyes" as if he was mad that the person acts as if that's not a repetitive behaviour that benefits them.
Go follow Alphabetics on instagram, facebook and twitter. Their website seems to be down right now, but you can always check it on the wayback machine. I also found an old tumblr blog they had, so cool!
You can of course listen to them on spotify and youtube!

Hello fellow Tumblrs, it's good to be back.
I first had my Tumblr account waaaay back in the early 2010s (2011 or 2012), but I ended up deleting my account in 2016, since I barely was on here and because I never really got the hang of it, as I remember just mindlessly scrolling down and refreshing my dashboard, liking and reblogging posts that weren't really of my interest.
But now, six years later, I got this urge to rejoin Tumblr, however, I was still hesitant to come back, since a lot of people on the Internet have been saying how "Tumblr is dead" ever since they've introduced new policies on December 2018, much to a lot of people's dismay and many have left as a result.
On the other hand, you've got people saying, "Yeah, Tumblr's not like it used to, but it's got a more mature, tight-knit community now, if you know where to look."
Nevertheless, I still wasn't convinced to rejoin, as I feared Tumblr were to shut down soon. I thought Tumblr would receive a similar fate like what happened to Vine (2013-2017) and Yahoo! Answers (2005-2021).
However, I read this article from The New Yorker where Jeff D'Onofrio (Tumblr's current CEO) said that "forty-eight percent of [Tumblr's] active users and sixty-one percent of its new ones are Generation Z," which is the target demographic that Facebook (Meta) and Instagram are concerned losing, and I'd include TikTok as well. Facebook is estimated to lose its teen-age users by almost half in the next two years, according to the Facebook Papers, The New Yorker mentions. So, there's a lot of competition.
"[Tumblr's] the periphery of the Internet. Nothing important is happening there." – Karina Tipismana, The New Yorker.
"[D'Onofrio] is pursuing individual campaigns with streaming giants, such as Disney, Netflix, and Amazon, which see opportunity in the site's thriving enclaves of various fandoms." – Kyle Chayka for The New Yorker
After reading that article, it doesn't look like Tumblr is dying, on the contrary, I'd say it's going through a rebirth of sorts, if the growing statistics Jeff said are true and if his business deals with the streaming giants go as planned. So, the likelihood of Tumblr shutting down is very unlikely.
So yeah, this is what made me come back – not because of the influx of Generation Z – but because Tumblr is still very much alive and has potential. As Karina Tipismana, the interviewee from The New Yorker article, said, "People say stuff like, 'I wish we could still use Tumblr.' It's there, it's there!"
But who knows, anything can happen, for better or for worse (right, 2020?), so I'm not setting my expectations too high here. We'll see how it goes. Regardless, I'm very excited to be back.
BTW, for those who are interested in reading The New Yorker article I read, here it is:

the sad truth about oppa homeless style
and the unfathomable evil that is reddit
last year my followers and i began an investigation into the origin of oppa homeless style and we quickly discovered that there appears to only exists one single screenshot of the mythical tumblr post:
Tumblr media
the screenshot was posted to imgur on the 1st of march, 2014, and appeared on /r/thatHappened/ in a thread titled ‘Fedora’d villain shames woman for giving to the homeless’
to further our investigation, @swordcats contacted the reddit user who had posted the thread. the user responded, saying they believe they “found it on 4chan”, adding that it was “probably fake”
Tumblr media
we still had hope that it could be a real tumblr post, but this confirmed our suspicion that it was possible the story was never posted to tumblr to begin with.
we then tried everything we could think of to find any mention of oppa homeless style that predates the imgur upload, but nothing showed up
we even tried carbon dating the post by the shade of blue in the screenshot
this didn’t help us find oppa homeless style, but by comparing it to older posts we were at least able to determined that the screenshot could have been taken around the time of the imgur upload
an anon later messaged me and suggested we should take a look at the post history of reddit user MechaMew2
as the anon noted, they were a frequent contributor to /r/thatHappened/
here are some of the tumblr stories they’ve posted:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
after posting 10 different MechaMew2 screenshots to my blog, i was contacted by fellow detective @bluesidefanclub who had done their own investigation
and the findings were devastating...
ALL of these screenshots are fake. all of the posts that arent a screenshotted reblog are his own posts, evidenced by the little x’s on the bottom of some of the screenshots, which used to be tumblrs old delete button. i looked through his ENTIRE post history and every single one of them that isnt a screenshot of a reblog has the delete button on them. none of the posts that are screenshots of reblogs have the x on the bottom, though, so i tried searching for them. ive been on tumblr since 2011 and never saw any of them, even the ones that seemed viral. i searched key phrases from every single one and wasnt able to find any of the originals, and the only images of them that come up are the ones that were posted to imgur and reddit. this especially makes no sense for the “AAAA IT BURNS IT BURNS” post because (according to the screenshot) it had at least 83k notes at the time of screenshotting. so he probably just edited those with inspect element.
MechaMew2 has also been a frequent submitter to r/fatlogic were they post similarly ridiculous stories intended to make fat people look bad:
Tumblrina gets triggered by nephew; Hides his homework under the couch so it can't hurt her anymore (3rd of october, 2014)
Tumblr media
Fat-shaming Barbie gets told off at the gym (31st of october, 2014)
Tumblr media
nowadays MechaMew2 is mostly fabricating fake facebook stories about pitbulls (they’re a frequent poster to r/banpitbulls)
Diapered pit bull named Naruto escapes through a window. Catch him and win dinner at Chili's. (3rd of november, 2020)
Tumblr media
Family cancels their Christmas; Sends the money to Trump (30th of november, 2020)
Tumblr media
of all the tumblr screenshots, @bluesidefanclub was only able to find one real post (which still showed the url of the person who reblogged it)
in a last ditch effort @bluesidefanclub:
searched for oppa homeless style on google, every major image hosting site (photobucket, flickr, imgur, etc) and also did reverse image lookup on about ten different sites, and each came back with the imgur result from march 2014 being the earliest upload. i searched every visible tag on the post up to the end and found nothing, and searched twitter for “oppa homeless style” pre-dating the imgur upload and couldn’t find anything explicitly pointing to the tumblr post.
so yes...  i think we must finally accept that oppa homeless style was never a real tumblr post
oppa homeless style was made by a redditor whose passion in life is to make fake screenshots of fake tumblr stories for fake internet points
as connoisseur of fake tumblr story i expected to be devastated by this news, but really it has only made oppa homeless style even funnier

Snapchat?
Snapchat is an American multimedia instant messaging app and service developed by Snap Inc., originally Snapchat Inc. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients. The app has evolved from originally focusing on person-to-person photo sharing to presently featuring users' "Stories" of 24 hours of chronological content, along with "Discover", letting brands show ad-supported short-form content. It also allows users to keep photos in the "my eyes only" which lets them keep their photos in a password-protected space. It has also reportedly incorporated limited use of end-to-end encryption, with plans to broaden its use in the future.
Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown,[7] former students at Stanford University. It has become known for representing a new, mobile-first direction for social media, and places significant emphasis on users interacting with virtual stickers and augmented reality objects. As of July 2021, Snapchat had 293 million daily active users, a 23% growth over a year.[8] On average more than four billion Snaps are sent each day.[9] Snapchat is popular among the younger generations, particularly those below the age of 16, leading to many privacy concerns for parents.
According to documents and deposition statements, Reggie Brown brought the idea for a disappearing pictures application to Evan Spiegel because Spiegel had prior business experience. Brown and Spiegel then pulled in Bobby Murphy, who had experience coding. The three worked closely together for several months and launched Snapchat as "Picaboo" on the iOS operating system on July 8, 2011.[10][11] Reggie Brown was ousted from the company months after it was launched.[12][13]
The app was relaunched as Snapchat in September 2011, and the team focused on usability and technical aspects, rather than branding efforts.[14] One exception was the decision to keep a mascot designed by Brown, "Ghostface Chillah", named after Ghostface Killah of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.[14]
On May 8, 2012, Reggie Brown sent an email to Evan Spiegel during their senior year at Stanford, in which he offered to re-negotiate his equitable share regarding ownership of the company. Lawyers for Snapchat responded by insisting that he had never had any creative connection to the product. The attorneys also accused Brown of committing fraud against Spiegel and Murphy by falsely claiming to be a product inventor. On behalf of their clients, the law firm concluded that Reggie Brown had made no contributions of value or worth, and was therefore entitled to a share of nothing.[15][16] In September 2014, Brown settled with Spiegel and Murphy for $157.5 million[17] and was credited as one of the original authors of Snapchat.[7][18][19]
In their first blog post, dated May 9, 2012, CEO Evan Spiegel described the company's mission: "Snapchat isn’t about capturing the traditional Kodak moment. It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion—not just what appears to be pretty or perfect."[20] He presented Snapchat as the solution to stresses caused by the longevity of personal information on social media, evidenced by "emergency detagging of Facebook photos before job interviews and photoshopping blemishes out of candid shots before they hit the internet.
As of May 2012, 25 Snapchat images were being sent per second[22] and, as of November 2012, users had shared over one billion photos on the Snapchat iOS app, with 20 million photos being shared per day.[22][23] That same month, Spiegel cited problems with user base scalability as the reason why Snapchat was experiencing some difficulties delivering its images, known as "snaps", in real time.[22] Snapchat was released as an Android app on October 29, 2012.[22]
In June 2013, Snapchat version 5.0, dubbed "Banquo", was released for iOS. The updated version introduced several speed and design enhancements, including swipe navigation, double-tap to reply, an improved friend finder, and in-app profiles.[24] The name is a reference to the ghostly hero from Shakespeare's Macbeth, a character in the play who is ultimately seen to be victorious over evil.[25] Also in June 2013, Snapchat introduced Snapkidz for users under 13 years of age. Snapkidz was part of the original Snapchat application and was activated when the user provided a date of birth to verify his/her age. Snapkidz allowed children to take snaps and draw on them, but they could not send snaps to other users and could only save snaps locally on the device being used.[26]
According to Snapchat's published statistics, as of May 2015, the app's users were sending 2 billion videos per day, reaching 6 billion by November.[27] By 2016, Snapchat had hit 10 billion daily video views.[28] In May 2016, Snapchat raised $1.81 billion in equity offering, suggesting strong investor interest in the company.[29] By May 31, 2016, the app had almost 10 million daily active users in the United Kingdom.[30] In February 2017, Snapchat had 160 million daily active users,[31][32] growing to 166 million in May.[33][34]
Investel Capital Corp., a Canadian company, sued Snapchat for infringement on its geofiltering patent in 2016.[35][36] They were seeking "monetary compensation and an order that would prohibit California-based Snapchat from infringing on its patent in the future."
In September 2016, Snapchat Inc. was renamed Snap Inc. to coincide with the introduction of the company's first hardware product, Spectacles—smartglasses with a built-in camera that can record 10 seconds of video at a time.[38] On February 20, 2017, Spectacles became available for purchase online.[39]
Snapchat announced a redesign in November 2017,[40] which proved controversial with many of its followers. CNBC's Ingrid Angulo listed some of the reasons why many disliked the update, citing that sending a snap and re-watching stories was more complicated, stories and incoming snaps were now listed on the same page, and that the Discover page now included featured and sponsored content.[41] A tweet sent by Kylie Jenner in February 2018, which criticized the redesign of the Snapchat app,[42] reportedly caused Snap Inc. to lose more than $1.3 billion in market value.[43][44] Over 1.2 million people signed a Change.org petition asking the company to remove the new app update.[45]
In December 2019, App Annie announced Snapchat to be the 5th most downloaded mobile app of the decade. The data includes figures for iOS downloads starting from 2010 and Android downloads starting from 2012.[46] Snapchat acquired AI Factory, a computer vision startup, in January 2020 to give a boost to its video capabilities.[47]
In November 2020, Snapchat announced it would pay a total of $1 million a day to users who post viral videos. The company has not stated the criteria for a video to be considered viral or how many people the payout would be split between. The promotion, called Snapchat Spotlight, is intended to run until the end of the year, although the company indicated it will continue if it's successful.

Yeah so this is obviously some transphobic bullshit on its own, and normally I’d just block the op[1] and move on, but something stuck with me. “Tumblr [...] is a primarily female space”? That doesn’t seem right.
Unfortunately it’s not exactly easy to find demographic statistics including gender for Tumblr, since the site doesn’t ask for that information upon signing up, and there aren’t really any site-wide polls with reliable information. This report states that: “Tumblr does not ask for gender information when a user signs up. Furthermore, although it does ask for user age, no independent verification is done, and Tumblr believes that the age information is unreliable. Therefore, it is a challenge to create ground truth labels” (Large-scale Gender/Age Prediction of Tumblr Users, Zhang et. al., 2015).
Tumblr media
(Source: “Percentage of U.S. internet users who use Tumblr as of 3rd quarter 2020, by gender,” Statista)
As you can see in the above graph, around the same number of Americans who identify as male use the site as those identifying as female, according to this particular online panel with over 2000 respondents above the age of 15.[2] Web traffic from the US only makes up a little under half of the total accounts on Tumblr (a little over 47% as of Jan 2021 according to SimilarWeb), but it’s by far the largest percentage (the second-greatest percentage of traffic comes from the UK, accounting for only a little over 5.6% of the total hits); the remaining approximate 52% is scattered between 251 countries.[3] Because of this significant gap, I think it’s safe to say that the US data can safely act as a rough stand-in for the total demographic makeup.[4]
Tumblr media
(Source: Quantcast report on Tumblr demographics, 2011)
The Quantcast analysis, once again, only reviews US data, and is fallible, but in this report we can clearly see that male-identified users constitute a slight majority.[5] An article from the Pew Research Center again supports the argument that Tumblr users are approximately equal in terms of gender,[6] stating that, “Unlike other social media platforms, Tumblr users are equally divided between men and women. Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest all are more popular among women; men are slightly more likely than women to use Twitter” (5 facts about Tumblr, pewresearch.org, 2013). This also opposes the claim in the original post that “most other social media” is male-dominated in terms of percentage of users.[7] (A similar report from Business Insider in 2015 also supports my argument.)
And finally, an article from TechJury once again corroborates the idea that the gender demographic makeup of Tumblr is approximately split evenly: “According to a survey from January of 2019, 27% of canvassed male internet users from the US stated that they are using, or have used Tumblr. [...] Tumblr gender statistics from January also found that 14% of female internet users from the US are familiar with Tumblr” (TechJury.net, Statista).
Anyway, I don’t have a good way to wrap this all up, but in conclusion: I don’t think the actual statistics support your claim that Tumblr is a “primarily female space,” so even setting aside the transphobic bullshit of the rest of the post... yeah, you’re wrong.
[1] Which I did anyway, I just also screenshotted the post and went hunting for more information. [2] Age demographics are an entirely different beast. [3] All of which contribute individually between 0-5% of the total traffic. [4] Which, let me remind you, does not exist. We do not have those data. [5] These data are from 10 years ago, mind; a more recent Quantcast report from 2013, allegedly surveying a representation of the entire website, found a 56-44% divide in favor of female-identified users. [6] Excluding those who don’t identify as either male or female, but that’s a topic for a different post. [7] In terms of loudness or prolificacy, that’s another story.

SO, WHAT DO WE KNOW about them, these vocal second-home owners? They worked hard for everything they own. They are clear on this. Their critics, they believe, are often motivated by jealousy. “I’m certainly not ‘rich.’ I’ve worked for my entire life to have the properties I own,” wrote one group member. Like many mountain communities, the Gunnison Valley attracts a motley mix of younger residents — seasonal public-land employees, ski bums who work the lifts, river guides, college graduates who stick around. “Irresponsible, non-tax-paying, bored children who will never plant roots here successfully,” one Facebook comment called them. In early April, a second-home owner from Oklahoma City, described “local adult skateboarders and bikers” picking up donated food at a food pantry in Crested Butte. “These takers need to pony up or get out,” she wrote. “Sadly,” another replied, “there are many entitled ‘takers’ here.”
In a phone interview, Moran dissected the implications of the word “rich.” Describing the second-home owners as such was a tactic employed by the media to “divide people by social strata,” he told me. I pointed out Gunnison County’s housing shortage to Moran, who, from 2008-2011, was an advisor of the private equity firm Lone Star Funds — the biggest buyer of distressed mortgage securities in the world after the 2008 financial crisis. After the crash, the firm acquired billions in bad mortgages and aggressively foreclosed on thousands of homes, according to The New York Times. I asked Moran if, compared to locals who struggle to pay rent, people who own two or more properties should be considered wealthy. “I think that’s wrong,” he replied.
Over the summer, I obtained access to the Facebook group. Beneath the anger at the County Commission and the exasperation with the local newspapers and adult skateboarders, a deeper grievance burned, one that was expressed consistently in the group. “Our money supports all of the people in the valley,” wrote one man. “Where is the appreciation and gratitude for the decades of generosity?” wrote another. According to the second-home owners, Gunnison County’s economic survival and most of its residents’ livelihoods depend on their economic contributions and continued goodwill. Their donations prop up the local nonprofits. Their broken derailleurs keep the bike shops open. In late April, Moran sent an angry message to a local server who had criticized the second-home owners, posting his note to the GV2H Facebook group as well. Moran, who had apparently left the server a large tip, called her comments “a betrayal of the good people who have been gracious to you.” Around that time, there was talk on the Facebook group of compiling a list of locals they considered ungrateful. “People who rely on others for their livelihoods should not bite the hand that feeds them,” wrote one second-home owner.
The list, which was posted on Facebook, became known as the Rogues Gallery. It named 14 people described as “folks who oppose GV2H.” The list, which was later deleted, included a local pastor and an artist. Sometimes it noted where someone worked and what they did. Repercussions were hinted at. “One of those big mouths is slinging drinks for tips — I’ll be sure to leave her a little tip — ‘Maybe don’t run your mouth so much on social media when you depend on those people to help pay your bills,’ ” one Facebook commenter wrote.
Amber Thompson, a longtime server at Crested Butte restaurants, was not in the Rogues Gallery, but was mentioned later as a possible addition after several online arguments with Moran and others from the GV2H Facebook group. She gets especially mad, she told me, when a second-home owner cites a big tip as evidence of their authority and value. As a server, she said, her job is simply to deliver food. The demand for gratitude, the resentment when they don’t receive it: “It’s a way to intimidate people, to make them bow down, and I just won’t do it.”
The first name on the Rogues Gallery was Ramgoolam, and he, too, declined to back down. His offence was a Facebook post in which he asked why Gunnison County residents were incapable of making their own political decisions — a thinly veiled critique of the super PAC, which Moran had registered in May. Shortly after learning about the Rogues Gallery, Ramgoolam wrote another Facebook post, thanking the community for its support during the pandemic. It included a picture of him in a red bandanna, carrying a Captain America shield. He intended it as defiance.
“I think (the super PAC) spits in the face of the relationship we have with our neighbors in this valley,” Ramgoolam said. “Whether you are a primary homeowner or a second-home owner, you respect people’s opinions and everyone is welcome to the table, but to overpower everyone at the table and try to take all the chairs for yourself is just wrong.”
For many in the Facebook group, opinionated locals interfered with their ability to relax and enjoy the Gunnison Valley. Fun, after all, is what brings them to Crested Butte. But fun was hard to come by in 2020. People were irate when the county declared a mask mandate on June 8. “We come to decompress, to relax, to regenerate!” one person wrote. “That’s a pressure we don’t need! Or don’t WANT, which isn’t a crime either!”
This came to a head when local demonstrations were held, prompted by George Floyd’s killing by Minneapolis police. One of them took place on June 27, in Crested Butte. After a short rally, a crowd proceeded up main street, led by the Brothers of Brass, a funk band from Denver. Demonstrators then lay on the blacktop for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the time that Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck. Many diners, who were sitting at outdoor patios on either side of the march, paused their meals for the duration. But on the Facebook group, indignation bubbled up. “People come to the Valley to relax and enjoy nature,” wrote one commenter. “This is made impossible when ‘protesters’ are bused in for a photo-op (not to mention pollution, noise, aggravation, and trash).” Several other commenters also insinuated outside influence. (Other than the band, there is no evidence that the protesters were not primarily local.) The Crested Butte Town Council’s subsequent decision to paint “Black Lives Matter” on the main street prompted another wave of irritation. “Crested Butte has clearly forgotten why people (tourists or second homers) like going to the mountains. It’s about escaping the craziness and the BS of the cities,” one of the second-home owners wrote. A few others announced that they would no longer go downtown.
This hostility came as no surprise to Elizabeth Cobbins, the lead organizer of the Gunnison Black Lives Matter demonstration. The second-home owners come to their vacation properties to “escape the real world,” she said. They forget, she told me, that the valley is more than a ski destination. It includes a college that is home to many students of color, and a sizable Hispanic community. The second-home owners feel their opinions matter because of their economic contributions, which, Cobbins said, are important, but, “the people who serve them live here, too, and they live here for the whole year.”

Anyone remember Lick's restaurants?
Final post from this location, the interiors of the former Lick's restaurant.
Let's start from the beginning, from what I have heard there used to be a Beaver Lumber at this corner intersection which closed down and was demolished in 1984.
I'm not sure when the plaza and the two restaurants were built but the has a very 80s or 90s architectural style to it, so I would guess not long after the Beaver Lumber was built.
According to a Hamilton Spectator article from 2013 the first Lick's opened as an Ice Cream parlour in Downtown Oakville, which is interesting since this former Lick's which I visited was also in Oakville, just in a different location.  In 1984 the store was becoming a chain with many more restaurants opening between then and 2009 and at its peak, Lick's Homeburgers had 30 locations throughout Southern Ontario.  The company began to suffer after the 2008 financial crisis at the same time receiving growing competition from gourmet burger chains such as The Works.  In the 2000s they also switched from serving fresh burgers to a more generic frozen style burger that can still be found in stores today.  Several stores began closing starting in 2012 and by 2017 there were only two locations remaining, on in Parry Sound and another in Toronto.  I looked at some of the reviews from these Lick's restaurants and they were not by any mean s favourable, receiving an average of 2.5/5 stars.  My own experience having eaten at the Parry Sound location as recently as a year or two ago is not dissimilar to this.  After this Lick's location closed down sometime between 2011 and 2014 it became another chain restaurant known as Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries, this is an American owned chain restaurant and operated until May of 2016.  Then in July of 2016 Gazebo Burgers & Grill opened, it's weird because looking through their Facebook page it seems as thought when they first opened they had the same design as the former restaurant but with different branding and a slightly different menu.  I am not sure if Gazebo bought all of the decor and furniture from the Hwy 55 owner when they opened or if it was the same owner the whole time.  The restaurant had a 1950s theme with pink and teal colours and 50's decor throughout!  Then in October 2019 they reopened the restaurant with a slightly updated look, going for a slightly more modern look (as seen in the photos) mixed with the same 50s decor from before.  On November 1st the restaurant closed down with plans to reopen at a later date.
At the end of June 2021 the plaza, the Taco Bell and Gazebo buildings were torn down to allow for road widening at the intersection.
