Where did the time go. There were 44 years between the age I was when the 2 photos were taken. To top it off, I am now a couple years older then the older photo. In the years in between so much happened, I traveled and lived 2 times in Southeast Asia, I graduated from college, came out twice (first as gay then as non-binary), was friends with many people with AIDS and lost far too many, I worked in public health for nearly 3 decades, I faced disability and chronic pain, I created a huge DVD, Blu-ray & 4K Blu-ray UHD Library, I’ve been a photographer for 44 years, I am a nerd and a geek, I fell in love with a wonderful man and spent 7 eventful years as his partner, I also continued the love of nature that started well before I was 18 and continued until now and into the future, I saw progress in the struggle for equality for everyone disenfranchised but I also saw setbacks and yet communities rebounded, protested, organized and kept striving for an equal and just future. Right now students are preparing to graduate from high schools, colleges and universities what challenges will they face? I certainly wish them well and encourage them to never lose their commitment to make the world a better place and to hold on to the things that bring you joy. I would never have survived this long if I wasn’t kind to my inner child and remembered to enjoy life, music, nature and being silly now and then. One more thing - travel - see new places - live in a different country - celebrate other cultures - you won’t regret it! in this picture Trey ( George) and his wife Alex has gone to India to see all of the Muslim art and the Taj Mahal. They traveled across India by train sometimes with so many people in a car you couldn’t move. Once they arrived Trey called me and I said how is your trip going he replied Great but it’s so hot I’ve never been this hot. I replied can’t you find a place to swim a watering hole or spring. There was silence on the other end then a laugh so hard he could barely speak and the he said Mom if we wanted to catch Hepatitis A,B,C,D and other diseases we would swim so no we will just manage. Such was his remarkable way to adapt on his travels. He wanted to immerse himself in whatever culture and place he happened to be in at the time. I am sure you entered Heaven the same way. #gonetoosoon #wanderlust #afulllife #mysweetboy #loveyouforever #fashiononashoestring (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-uVTNCjZmp/?igshid=1q1rg8z6149bd

This year feels like a big year.  I know that all years matter but I have really been deep in thought about the next steps for my life.  I have had great times and heartbreaking times.  The lifelong relationship I was in did not turn out to be much at all.  I am putting thought into the milestones that I still want to experience.  Having a creative outlet in my life has definitely brought me joy.  I have a few high dollar items on my wish list that I am putting a great deal of thought into but I am holding off on all big purchases until I finish a project and complete my life list.  I am less than a month away from some big days.
I am asking myself what I really want to accomplish.

My life has been very full lately. I'm still settling in the shift of a new job, new goals, same friends and new energy. I have neglected past priorities to make room for new ones which can be unsettling and made me anxious. But I'm thankful more growth and boundless opportunities. Through it all I am so grateful to have amazing friends that inspire and support me to no end. Hug a Friend today, we need each other. #zenfullychic #hugafriend #Afulllife #instalove #support #growth #love #gratitude #priortizeyou #friends #staychic #begoodtoyou #justbreathe #opportunity #thanksforthelove #thatNewNew #feelgood #lookgood (at Los Angeles, California)

A Full Life  (continued)
Frank Johnston
May 17, 2017
At age seven I made my First Holy Communion in the Chapel of the girls’ convent school I attended for three years.  I was so acutely aware of the solemnity of the occasion that I was afraid to reach forward and move my candle back from Our Lady’s statue.  It was not until all the congratulations and photo taking was finished that I confessed to Mother Basil about my anxiety of my candle setting fire to Our Lady’s statue, and then the chapel and the school.  She extinguished the candle.  The official photo of the group shows me forcing a smile alongside my younger brother Ray, Joan Healey (lifetime friend of both Jeanne and I),  Iris Trezise and Margaret Emery.  Both Iris and Margaret would later become related by marriage through my sister Maureen and Jeanne’s brother John McKenna.
By this time, I had almost recovered from polio which I contracted at age five during an epidemic.  Many were not so lucky, such as Iris who was permanently crippled by it.  I may have been cured because my doctor believed in a controversial massage treatment espoused by the Australian nurse Elizabeth Kenny know as “Sister Kenny.”
My first recollection of receiving corporal punishment was when I was about six years old.  My elder sister, Maureen, Ray and I crept home after exploring forbidden territory—the nearby banks of the Yarra River.  Dad was waiting for us at home, visible over the top of the fence. Maureen was spared the razor strop but Ray and I were not so lucky.  I think I must have sneaked off to the river bank often, despite the punishment.  When I visited the spot fifty years later with Mum, I reverted unconsciously to picking up and sucking sour grass on seeing its little yellow flower.
I can also remember as a small boy Mum scrubbing my knees unmercifully in the bath until they were pink.  I tried to keep them hidden in the suds but to no avail.  I now believe my knees were not dirty but suntanned as I wore short paints and long socks as all Australian boys did in those days until about age fourteen.
Another fetish of my mother concerned the family bowels.  She bought some sennapods at the chemist shop (pharmacy) and brought them out on Friday night.  She lined up about three tall glasses, each half filled with the foul smelling pods, and tipped boiling water over them.  Next morning we had to drink every drop.  She would enquire the next day if we had done “whiz-bang” as she believed in the value of a good purge weekly.
Early in life I had got into radio and often shared the headphone with my brother Ray when there was a play on.  I built a portable radio with a speaker and mounted it in a small suitcase.  I also built a high fidelity AM receiver which was very heavy because of its massive transformers.  I remember being interested in radio almost from the cradle, when radio was first becoming popular in Australia.  A highlight when I was a boy was listening to the description of the test cricket from England.  The commentators got the score by telegraph and made up the rest.  Each time a wicket fell a song called “Rickety Katie” would be played.  The whole family gathered around the radio set fully focusing on it as though it was alive!
From the radio, both Jeanne and I learnt the “silly” songs of our youth. They keep us laughing these days as we recall them at appropriate times like when talking to the fish in our pool in the rain garden as we sing:
“Down in the meadow of the Inky-pinky pooh,
Swam three little fishes and a Mummy fish too!
‘Swim,’ said the Mummy fish, ‘Swim if you can.’
And they swam and they swam all over the dam.”
