Completely and Irrevocably | Eddie Munson x Reader
Prompt: Jealous
Words: 2005
Fandom: Stranger Things
A/N: Could be read as a continuation of [He’s Not My Boyfriend] or as a standalone. I wanted this out sooner, but classes started and my computer sensed stress and started acting weird again. I don’t know how to title fics anymore.
Summary: Eddie was excited to tell you that he finally passed English and was able to graduate when he saw you laughing with one of the basketball players.
-
Eddie couldn’t remember who asked who out first, but it felt more like an amicable decision. He mentioned a movie that just came out which made you want to go out and watch it together as soon as possible. So eager for your date tonight, he almost missed the bell ringing and the teacher calling him.
He felt all eyes on him before they rushed out, not wanting to be in class any longer than necessary. He grabbed his things and made his way over to Ms. O’Donnell’s desk, fingers fidgeting with his rings and his backpack strap. Instead of a disappointed look, there was a smile on her face as she looked up at him.
“Mr. Munson,” she said with a proud shine in her eyes. “Would you like to see your exam score now?”
He shifted his feet and shrugged. “Do I have a choice?”
She chuckled, pulling out a paper out of the stack in front of her before sliding it towards him. “Edward Munson… your hard work finally paid off.”
His eyes widened, picking up his exam gingerly like it was a fragile treasured document found in a dungeon. “What? You’ve got to be shitting me,” he breathed.
Ms. O’Donnell pursed her lips at his language, but decided to let it slide. It was a day to celebrate. “You passed!” she said, leaning back in her chair.
Eddie cleared his throat, feeling himself choke up. “I passed,” he repeated, then shouted, “I passed! I’m graduating!” He started jumping up and down, fighting the strange urge to hug her. “Thank you!”
She shook her head. “It was all you, Eddie. Go now. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Her hand waved in a shooing motion before turning back to her work.
Eddie ran out of the classroom, making his way straight to your locker. You were going to be so stoked once he told you that he’ll be graduating with you. The two of you haven’t been going out for that long, but you didn’t see the harm in discussing the future. You had already applied to a few colleges here in Indiana and a few out of state long before you started dating him. As for him, he wasn’t so sure.
The future of the band was up in the air, with Jeff and Frank waiting to hear from all of the colleges they applied for. He didn’t want to feel petty when he found out that they might move away. Heck, he’d find any way he could to get out of that hellhole they call Hawkins. He just hoped that they’d still be together.
Your melodious cackling echoed through the emptying halls as he neared, shouldering past students that were still lingering nearby. His heart stopped when he saw you leaning against your locker, smiling at one of Jason’s cronies. The ball and laundry basket player laughed at something you said, looking down bashfully for a moment before looking back up with an all too familiar glint of adoration in his eyes.
Eddie’s hands tightened into fists, crumpling the very paper that he once held like a treasured parchment. That guy’s going to college, he heard. He got a sports scholarship along with a few others in varsity. He’d be able to go college with you. At least he had some idea of where his future was headed, unlike Eddie. Of course, it would be someone that you sat with during lunch, the one that’s also a part of your best friend, Chrissy’s, crowd.
“Eddie!” you yelled excitedly, tearing your attention away from the basketball player and into Eddie’s arms.
Eddie held you tightly as he glared at the jock over your shoulder. The other guy’s face fell as he stared at the two of you.
“I’ll see you around,” he called out.
“Huh? Oh, yeah. See you later,” you said, waving at him while your other arm was firmly wrapped around Eddie’s waist.
Eddie stood smugly as the jock banged a fist against the lockers before leaving through the double doors of the school. “Wonder what his problem is,” Eddie muttered sarcastically.
“That was weird,” you agreed obliviously.
“What were you two talking about anyways?”
He kissed your forehead rather aggressively, making you giggle. It melted almost every ounce of jealousy that he was feeling earlier. His arm slid down to your waist as he led you out to the parking lot.
“We were talking about how he had to serve detention by helping the drama club make props because he didn’t think skipping an elective class would get him in major trouble. I was telling him that the drama club’s got pretty cool people and that you were in it for a while. Then, he made a joke about how joining the club was the secret to scoring someone out of his league,” you said, letting him take your backpack and steer you towards his van while you rambled on.
Eddie’s jaw tightened at that last sentence, his irritation coming back. He knew that you were too good for him and he’s been reminded every day of that, but you always told him how wrong the others were, that he was good enough. No one knows him like you and his close friends do and even then, there were certain things that he could tell only to you and vice versa.
“I told him that that was a stupid thing to say. You should join the club because you want to, not to get dates or else you’re wasting everyone’s time. Then, I started talking about how you started Hellfire Club and how the drama teacher lets you host DnD sessions after school in the drama room and how you saved up money to buy the throne you use and –” You took a break to breathe, climbing into the passenger seat with hands reaching for the milk crate of cassette tapes in the back “ – and then he changed the subject and started talking about how Jason met Chrissy and I told him I already knew this story because Chrissy’s my bestie and then you showed up and here we are.”
Eddie hummed noncommittally, taking the tape from your hand and popping it in the player. He could feel you staring at him, trying to figure out what was going through his head. It wasn’t like him to not show any reaction when you talked about your day. He ignored your concern for now, starting up the van and finally getting the hell away from that school.
“Baby?” you asked slowly. “You okay?”
He nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just had a lot on my mind. Uh, I passed English, by the way.”
“Really? Holy shit, congrats, babe! We should do something. Should we get ice cream after the movies?”
“Yeah, sounds good,” he said, sounding a lot more indifferent than he wanted it to be. He could see your shoulders sagging from his lack of enthusiasm, making him feel worse. “Babe, I’m sorry. I’m just… “
“Eddie, you can talk to me,” you said softly, “Please. You did this a couple of times before and I’m getting worried. Nancy said that this happened with her and Jonathan and they almost broke up.”
“Almost? Is everything fine now?”
You nodded. “Yes, because they talked it out. This isn’t also about college, is it? About where we’ll be going after graduation?”
He sighed. “It’s a part of it. A big part of it, actually. Look, I don’t see myself as someone to be pursuing a higher education. Especially not after being a super senior. I doubt I’d be able to feel comfortable getting a normal nine to five job or whatever. Plus, leaving my uncle behind? I spoke about this with him and he’s not ready to move out of here. I just don’t know where I’m going to go and I feel like I’m taking one step forward and two steps back. I finally graduate, but I don’t know what I wanna do while everyone else seems to have an idea, even that stupid jock guy that keeps flirting with you.”
“He wasn’t flirting with me,” you said in confusion.
“Sweetie, he was totally and completely flirting with you. He was enamored with you,” he said, emphasizing ‘enamored’ by stretching it out. “He looks at you the same way as I do.”
“How?”
Eddie sighed again, his thumb fiddling with the ring on his index finger. “Like he’s totally in love with you.”
You hummed, trying to keep your composure, hoping that your frown would cover up the fact that your heart was beating out your chest at the implication of his words. As much as you’d love to jump for joy and sing at the top of your lungs, there was something that you wanted to set straight.
“But, I don’t think the way he looks at me is the same way that you do,” you said. He glanced at you, wanting you to continue. “He’s not in love with me. How can he when he doesn’t even know me? You do, though. You… you see me. I can be my dorky and clumsy self around you. I don’t feel ashamed when the crowds get too much and you’re right beside me to help me deal with it. I sometimes get a little nosy when it comes to other people’s business and you would leave notes for me in your DM notebook whenever I flip through it. You and my best friend get along well and you eased us into playing DnD. Despite all of this, I want to make sure. Really, really, sure, that what you said is true.”
“What part?” he asked, feigning ignorance.
“I want to know that I’m not alone in this and I don’t want to get my hopes up over a slip up.”
“Yeah,” he said softly, looking straight ahead at the road. He was afraid to see your reaction when he confessed. The two of you have never said those four letter words so explicitly and mainly through action. “Completely and irrevocably in love with you.”
Completely and irrevocably, huh? It was a wonder why he failed English twice when you knew that he loved reading and he used that kind of vocabulary all the time in his campaigns. Not to mention that he wrote amazing lyrics for his band. Then again, the assigned reading was never anything by Tolkien or anyone that would appeal to a fantasy nerd like Eddie.
He risked another glance as you reached over to squeeze his arm. He let out a long sigh of relief as you practically leaned into him with a soft look on your face. “You’re not freaked out about it? I know it might be too soon, but –”
“Oh, Eddie,” you stopped him. “‘You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you’. I’ve never loved someone so much as I have you.”
“Really?” He felt his heart soar, knowing that his feelings were fully reciprocated.
You nodded. “Honestly, I don’t have a set goal for the future, either, but what I do hope is that you will be there with me. We can figure it out together.”
“Together. You’re right. Frodo doesn’t leave the Shire alone. Samwise is by his side through it all.”
“Right, and we both had never left the Shire before, so it’ll be an adventure for us. Are we good now?”
Eddie reached over for your hand and kissed your knuckle. “We’re good now.”
“Good, because I’m actually kind of hungry right now, so I was thinking of getting burgers and milkshake first before the movie and –”
He felt silly for ever thinking that you’d just leave him for some jock, all because of his insecurities and the impending unknown once graduation is over. One thing was for certain, as you said, that the two of you would figure things out together, that no matter what happens, you’ll be by each other’s side.
