Alterhuman Review: No I Am a Wolf
Tumblr media
Author: A.M. Lang
Illustrator: Patricia Dishmon-Caraballo
Publication Date: January 2022
Official Book summary:
George can’t be bothered with mundane human tasks; he is a wolf. Wolves and kids have many differences but they also have some things in common. Embrace your child’s wild side with this cute story plus animal facts.
So, we've been aware of this children's book for about half a year now. Upon first seeing it, we feared this might be a Johnny The Walrus by Matt Walsh situation. (That is, a thinly-veiled transphobic dig at the existence of transgender people, that accidentally also hits the alterhuman community due to its content, wrapped in the guise of a children's picture book.) But after gathering up courage hope, we finally bought a copy not to long ago. This book is NOT anything like Johnny The Walrus by Matt Walsh. No transphobia here and this book is also accidentally very alterhuman affirming as well.
The book consists of 21 illustrations with text. With each turn of the page the reader sees the left page showing George (the book's character) as a boy having to do ordinary human boy things (brush teeth, put on clothing, bathing, etc.) with text telling George to do said task, while the right page shows a wolf in George's place along with an affirmation "No, I am a Wolf" (usually, several scenes are instead in the positive, "Yes, I am a Wolf") along with additional text saying what a wolf would or would not do. The book ends with George being told: “Good night, my little wolf.”
While the author likely meant to create a cute children’s book showing a child imagining himself as an animal in the way that is common and normal among children, the book also happens to be very alterhuman. As someone who lives with a full phantom body, the illustration of a wolf stuck in situations doing everyday human things, like brushing your teeth, certainly felt very “yeah it be like that.” So, in summary, cute children’s book that is accidentally very alterhuman and is not transphobic at all! Yay!

Static image version of a previously posted video. All images are ALT text, but I shall also paste the text here:
COMMUNITY PSA: A reminder that those who identify physically as nonhuman are welcome and have always, and will always, be a part of the therian, alterhuman, nonhuman, otherkin, and similar communities, and can use ANY of these labels.
Whether their reason for identifying this way is spiritual, due to delusions, trauma, mental health, conditions such as lycanthropy or zoanthropy or is similar to the notion of "this is my body, and I am nonhuman, therefore my body is nonhuman" is their business and theirs alone.
People outside of the communities will always find a way to dislike us, and trying to cater to them by putting down other members of these groups will never make them fully accept us. Playing into the "Us vs Them" mindset only pushes the community apart.
All I hear when I see videos and comments from fellow therians, nonhumans, otherkin and alterhumans talking about these identities being ONLY non-physical is, "well, we OBVIOUSLY don't identify physically as animals/etc. We're not like those CRAZY people!"
Which is not only ableist but paints those who do identify physically in a bad light, whatever their reason may be. Delusions and mental illnesses that may cause them does not mean the identity of that individual is fake or wrong. So treat others nicely, even if you may not understand.
Not only that but delusions and the mental illnesses that cause them do not always equate to distressing or bad. Unlearn the idea that such things are an indicator of something being wrong and so has to be fixed because that mindset hurts many who live unbothered lives with them.
All of my accounts will always be safe spaces for those who have physical nonhuman and alterhuman identities. Just as they will be a safe space for those whose identity is non-physical. The only one who can decide what and who you are is yourself.
Stay true to yourself! Ignore, report and block the haters! Your happiness is more important than their ideas of you!

nobody move i just had a revelation.
so, you know the Bailey School Kids books, right? the series about a bunch of children speculating on whether or not the seemingly innocuous grown-ups around them may actually be mythical creatures/wizards/undead/what have you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’ve seen that post joking about how the supposedly secret monster people in the books are just very obviously queer, but i just realized another interpretation: these books are just about nonhumans. i’m one of the weird grown-ups in this book series.
all this time, i was reading about werewolves and vampires and aliens living under the guise of humans, when i was the creature in human form all along!!
(ps: if you’re nonhuman, put what the title of your book in this series would be in the tags. mine would be ‘wasp-cats don’t write fanfiction’)

tw: unreality (probably), reality checking (more like double book keeping I guess but???)
how do I get more comfortable with the existence of nonhumans who say they can physically shift but aren't delusional?
like. I know it's unfair, but every time I see someone be like "I am a werewolf and I'm not a clinical lycanthrope, I do not see this as a delusion", my mind automatically screams P-SHIFTER P-SHIFTER NO NO BAD!!!
I don't want that! I know it's fucking unfair, but I just... have such a hard time to get comfortable with this - for a lot of reasons actually, but mainly it's 1) I am 0% spiritual so I just. ya know, science says it's impossible and I believe in science so, how??? (<- rethorical question btw, having an explanation or not should not influence how I react to the mere existence of other beings) and 2) I SO DESPERATELY want to believe that shapeshifting exists, I so desperately want my shapeshifting abilities and if I accept that it exists (because people say that it happens to them) but I can't do it... that would be a fucking catastrophe for my mental health.
I know I should just accept them and don't get me wrong, I don't harrass anyone, I mainly just avoid these beings. but it's so hard and I feel horrible for being so judgy but I just... I don't know.
like, I believe people's experiences. if someone tells me "I can physically shift into a horse" then cool, I believe that's exactly what you're experiencing, I believe that it's absolutely real to you and I WANT to believe it's real (=visible, proveable, anything) to other people too but I just... have such a hard time. my brain either wrongfully accuses them of being a harmful cult-y p-shifter or thinks that they probably have delusions and just aren't aware of them.
Again, I know that's harmful thinking and I want to change that!
every time I catch myself thinking something like the above, I actively correct myself in my head but I can't just fully accept and believe it.
I don't know what to do about this, it's really stressing me out and making me feel bad on various levels... if anyone has an idea how to get over this, please please help :(

Having to live in a world where your religion/spirituality is only seen as a weird cringe online thing that no one actually realizes is a spiritual belief and thinks is just "identifying with a character" or making jokes about it sucks and if you try to talk about it people just call it discourse or say you're not letting people have fun (and their fun is making fun of a spiritual belief or misunderstanding the belief because of just how many people co-opted our terms). I just wish I'd be able to say I'm otherkin(d) and alterhuman and people to take it seriously and not think I'm any more or less delusional than they'd think of any other religious person, as well as for it to not be misunderstood. I don't mind if people don't know what it means, but I really hate how people just think it's like, a Tumblr/Twitter/TikTok thing where people relate to a character or bash people for stuff and getting into discourse or doing dangerous stuff. I don't know how to word all this well but...yeah. Just thinking about it. Because of how it's been conflated online, even if you try to explain, people don't understand that yes, it's a genuine spiritual movement, and no, people aren't just having fun, they co-opted religious/spiritual terms which is just as serious and important as with any religious/spirituality. People will say, well, language changes and words change, but you wouldn't say that about terms from other religions or spiritualities being used wrong or improperly.

I've made a few posts talking about things in the nonhuman and alterhuman communities recently, mostly just brief looks into them, so I thought I would share this one.
The info may not be all that much, and could easily be expanded upon, but I did my best for a simple bit of info for certain things.
All pictures have ALT text included, but I shall post the text also here, under a cut, cause it's a bit long, lol
Nonhuman as an identity: To identify as not human either fully or partially. (hate/trolls will be reported and deleted)
Reminder: These are all personal identities and why someone identifies as nonhuman and what term someone decides to use for themself is exclusively their business. In the end it is what makes the most sense to the individual and not up to others. Now, onto some of the communities that are included under the nonhuman identity:
Otherkin: from the term "otherkind" - an identity which typically encompasses being wholly or partially a nonhuman entity. Usually understood to cover those who identify as mythical creatures and other fantastical things. Also covers those that fall outside of beings and creatures.
Examples of non-being or creature based identities: Conceptkin: an identity where one identifies as a concept such as the concept of night or fire. Objectkin: and identity where one identifies as an object. Songkin: an identity where one identifies as a song.
Examples of being and creature based identities: Therianthropy: usually shortened to therian - where one identifies AS a nonhuman animal. Some will say that this term refers to only earthen animals, living or extinct, but it has never only encompassed earthly animals. The community's language came from those who identify as werecreatures. Theriomythic: an alternate identity term for one who identifies in some intrinsic was as a mythical creature. Paleotherian: an identity term for one who identifies as a now extinct earthly animal, like a dinosaur or mammoth.
Cladotherian or Cladokin: an identity term for one who does not identify as a distinct species, but a broader identity encompassing an entire genus or larger grouping. Cladomythic: an identity term for one who identifies as a group (clade) of animalistic mythical creatures.
Fictionkin: an identity term that covers all things fictional. For those who identify as something fictional like characters, animals, species, objects, etc. These can be from books, shows, video games, etc, but not always! Original fictional characters and such are also possible.
There are many other identities that fall under the nonhuman umbrella which is why it's important to do your own research to figure out if a certain term works for you. All these identities share the trait of being involuntary. You cannot choose to be therian, otherkin, or the other mentioned identities.
While the already mentioned identities are involuntary, there are some identities that fall under being voluntary. Otherlink: an identity where one voluntarily identifies as nonhuman. Copinglink: an identity where one voluntarily identifies as nonhuman to copes with things such as trauma, stress, etc.
A lot of people may also say that it is impossible to become a therian, otherkin, etc. While the identity is involuntary, things like trauma and neurodivergence can cause an individual to take on a nonhuman identity when they had not had one previously.
Most will usually see people explain that these identities are spiritual or psychological, but these are only some of the ways that individuals may experience them. Some other experiences of nonhumanity: Symbolic Metaphorical Ancestral Physical (Yes this is an actual reason for some and they are just as much a part of the community as anyone else. Physical and Ancestral nonhumans are part of the community's history and some of its founders.)
For those looking for more information, and community places, here are some places to check out! Werelist Nonhuman National Park Alterhuman Archive The Chimera's Library. The above are forums and archives of information on the community. Most archived information is thanks to who-is-page, liongoatsnake and frameacloud on tumblr.
While this is a brief look into the nonhuman identity that I could share, I do hope it has been helpful in some way. Remember to be true to yourself, and don't let anyone tell you how to feel. Ignore, report, delete and block the haters!
Yeen out~

The stack of papers on the board have the symbol for therianthropy, which is made of the Greek letters theta and delta interlaced. The papers say, “Therian survey! Let’s hear from your voice!” The canine psychopomp named Page Shepard (@who-is-page) explains, “It’s separate from our otherkin survey!” The chimera, named House of Chimeras (@liongoatsnake), holds up a pencil with their snake tail, and says, “For our book on alterhumans!” The dragon named Orion Scribner (@frameacloud) is me, I drew this illustration. We are writing a book about alterhumans, and you can be part of it! We want to hear from therianthropes in particular for this part: the Therian Community Survey, which asks about your theriotypes, experiences, and how you personally define therianthropy. It’s about ten minutes long, open to anyone physically at least eighteen years old who identifies with the label “therianthrope.” One response per physical body, please.
>>> SURVEY LINK <<<
This survey will close on April 7, 2024. The data collected from this survey will be used for research purposes. Any identifying information that participants submit will be made anonymous or removed. Please join our mailing list to get notifications of updates, more surveys, and other events related to our book in progress about alterhumans!
