In a dimly lit room, you sat at a shabby old desk belonging to your predecessor. The room seemed cramped and suffocating, as if the bare walls were getting closer and closer the longer you stayed there in your chair. You stared at the screen of an overloaded old computer, your eyes wide open and your forehead furrowed thoughtfull, the table littered with all the papers from a new case, scattered in a chaotic arrangement while the coffee in the cup next to it has long since become cold, ignored and forgotten.
Your hands clinging to the mouse, sweaty and shaking, the cursor on the screen frantically darting over various tabs and icons as you desperately tried to get anything done amid the pressure, stress and sleepless nights of the last few weeks. Your breathing was heavy and shallow, but your chest was still falling quickly and in an irregular rhythm. The air around you thick and the pressure within it palpable, as if invisible hands were constricting your throat.
"Hey, y/n. Are you okay?" A bright, feminine voice asked, her fitting figure standing in front of your desk. Your eyelids flickered as you lifted your head, the thoughts in your head swirling wildly as you tried to keep control of them and yourself. But the only thing you wanted at that moment was to go back to the blade and relieve yourself, even though you had already been clean for three months and had promised yourself never to fall back into this addiction.
"Y-yeah, everything is fine," you lied in a broken and raspy voice, the desk lamp next to you flickering dimly as the room filled with a muffled, monotone sound that seemed to penetrate through your ears and lodge in your head. "Are you sure? You look pale and you are sweating. Do you have a fever?"
The pressure inside you grew with your colleague's questioning, heavy like an unbearable weight that rested on your shoulders and pulled you further and further to the ground. Every second that the blonde's eyes were on you seemed like an eternity, and the pressure inside, mixed with a deep panic, felt like a bubbling volcano, ready to erupt and consume everything around you. "You know what? I feel sick. I am going to go home and rest."
ᕚ---ᕘ
As soon as you got home, you quickly ran to the bathroom and looked for a brand new disposable razor, which you had disassembled in seconds. The world around you blurred into a diffuse mist of colors and shadows as you sat down on the bed and violently tore your jacket down. Your heartbeat was pounding in your ears and your gaze was blank, fixated on the cold silver between your fingers. Your hands shook as you placed the blade spasmodically against your thin skin, fighting the inner storm to hurt yourself and destroy the promise you gave Amelia.
There was an ominous silence around you, broken only by the dull thumping of your own pulse. Your body was heavy, bound by an invisible chain, your legs rooted to the ground. Your face marked by fear and desperation, but also relief as you pulled the blade through and a thin line of blood appeared on the cut. It helped you release the pressure you were holding inside, pouring out the stress of the days.
It was a moment of liberation that no one understood. Another cut brought you repeated relief and at the feeling of burning and escaping emotions, you closed your eyes as you tilted your head back and took a deep breath. In your trance, you didn't even hear how the front door closed and your girlfriend checked on you in every room. "Y/n? My love, where are you?" Amelia called but you did not hear her, the environment around you seemed unreal and vague.
Amelia had come home after your colleague called her and told her about the incident that had happened at work. She was worried that you really were not feeling well, leaving you go home alone in case something happened to you, so to be on the safe side she had called the emergency contact number listed in your file to make sure you were not alone and someone could look after you when you got home. "Elizabeth called me and said that you-" she stopped perplexed in her tracks, her jaw hanging low as she spotted you, bloody razor just inches away from your wrist.
Close to it, there were cuts, angry red blood dripping down onto your thigh. "Hey, what are you doing there? Put that down, please" she demanded softly, mostly out of fright and shock. You looked down at the ground, refusing to meet her gaze as she dropped her bag on the floor and immediately made her way to the bathroom to grab some bandages. Amelia returned with a small, wet rag, which she gently placed over your wrist and pressed firmly onto it. There was not much bleeding, she did not have to worry about serious injuries, however tears threatened to fall. The brunette was scared- terrified for you.
"Why?" she asked sniffling, not showing the slightest bit of anger in her voice. You looked up nervously, your shiny and relieved eyes meeting her sad hazel brown ones. She ran her fingers delicately through your strands of hair before her hand came to rest on your cheek, her thumb lightly stroking your cheekbone. "You were clean. Why did you do that, darling?"
„I just needed to escape the harsh and bleak reality. Life recently got so rough and I felt like I may burst,“ you began to speak and she pulled you into her chest by the back of your head. Amelia kissed your hair, ran her hand through it and gently rocked you from left to right. Her chin rested on your skull, her eyes closed to calm her racing heart. She was not mad at you, never could be. She herself knew what it was like to fight an addiction; it took her several attempts to be sober for a good three years. "I am sorry, Am."
"It is okay. Please only answer one question," you nodded your head, still hidden in her chest and held by her. "If you could kill yourself right now, would you?" You quickly jumped and tore yourself away from her, your eyes wide at the shocking question. Placing your hands on her thighs, you gently rubbed her knees and looked deep into her eyes. "No, because suicide means that you have given up on yourself. And I am not going to do that. I just had to let the pressure go because I did not see any other option."

Behind The Curtain - Amelia Shepherd/Reader (Grey’s Anatomy)
request: Could you do a oneshot with Amelia Shepard where they both work at the hospital and are secretly dating. One day Arizona or Meredith or somebody catches them making out and then teases them about it the rest of the day. You're writing is fantastic! Thanks for reading this :) - anon
a/n: these are from my old tumblr thefandomwritings from back in 2018 ! re-vamped and re-purposed!! hope u enjoy and forgive the 2018 me style writing
Tumblr media
Keeping your relationship with Amelia secret had been pretty easy for the two of you.
Whilst you were rarely seen venturing further than paediatrics ward, Amelia was similarly tied down to Neuro, being a neurosurgeon, and to whatever various tasks kept her occupied elsewhere in the hospital. Therefore there was never any need to cover anything up about your long-term relationship.
It had begun as a late night fling, early on in your careers at Seattle Grace - you had both finished a shift at the same time and walked into each other as you were buying a coffee.
She smiled sleepily, her eyes bleary as she gripped the coffee cup, “Y/L/N, right?”
You nodded at the correct name, and also in recognition of the woman in front of you, “Amelia.”
“Coffee? At this late hour?” She smirked, a twinkle growing in her eyes.
You couldn’t help but let out a laugh, “I could say the same for you.”
Amelia shrugged and started walking at your side, “I won’t get any sleep any time soon anway, what’s your excuse?” She raised an eyebrow as the two of your left the cafeteria.
“Same.” You shrugged, before turning back to face her and fully reigstering the look in her eyes. You took a slight risk, hoping it was the correct one, “Want to come back to mine? We can talk about how shit life is and commiserate together?”
“I’m less of a talker, more of a do-er.” She caught your expression of a raised eyebrow and shook her head, “Not like that!”
“Hey, we can do whatever you want to do.” You laughed, “I can make us more coffee at home? Stronger coffee.”
“Okay. I’d like that.”
You were fortunate really because whenever you were around one another your love was probably too obvious and your relationship was something that you felt didn't need to be known by everyone yet. So, the longer it could be kept a secret, the better. There would be no complaints of favouritism in surgery and no teasing during late night shifts, it was just straight up easier.
And while normally the distance between your areas of expertise was in your favour, sometimes, on the rare occasion, the paediatrics and brain surgery teams would collaborate. It was at time like these that it was much more difficult to keep your hands off each other.
The day had started with Arizona rushing towards you, a stressed look on her face reserved for only the worst cases. "We have a nine year old girl coming in with serious unspecified head injuries. I've paged Lady Shepherd so she is on her way up, you'll be following the case with me." She rushed out, no time to pause.
"Wait, I... Lady Sheph- Amelia is being given the case?" You asked, your heart hammering slightly once you heard the name.
"She is our in-house neurosurgeon so, yes. She is. Do you have a problem with that Y/L/N?" The woman quirked an eyebrow up at you, giving you one of her looks that you could hardly ever interpret so you just stuttered away.
"N-no, not at all. That's fine, it's great. Good for her." You stumbled through some random words that didn't even really make sense in the situation before you were interrupted by your girlfriend walking through the doors.
There was just something about her in authority and her scrubs that turned you on and that was why you were better off separated. So you found yourself relatively lucky to not be included in the team that went into surgery.
You avoided the viewing platform. But even when you were stuck outside doing paperwork you still found yourself too distracted, your mind wandering off too many times, thinking of what you would do to the woman once you were in the safety of your own apartment.
It was going to be a long day.
You had waited until the surgery was finished until you snuck into a call room. Amelia had been walking past when you attempted to (subtly) pull her into the  room with you. You immediately closed the door and pinned her up against it, making an attempt to lock the door before Amelia flipped the tables and pushed you against the wall. The look in her eyes immediately brought back memories of how your relationship had initially begun.
"What are you smiling about?" She asked, pulling back with a confused look on her face.
Leaning forward, you kissed her nose and hummed slightly, "I love you, is all."
The smile remained on your face as you leant slowly in. Your lips connected and the kiss only became more passionate as the pent up frustration of long, hard days and not seeing each other as much as you needed to built up. You weren't even in there to hook up like you always used to, you just need to be close and be together.(Although, shirts were beginning to be unbuttoned...)
You were vaguely aware of footsteps approaching but you were too caught up with Amelia and had just assumed they had passed. That was until you heard a small gasp coming from the doorway.
Amelia and you pulled away from each other as quickly as you could, your girlfriend stumbling back and almost falling over had it not been for you grabbing her waist and wrapping your arms around her to prevent the fall.
Once she was secure you turned your head back to whoever had interrupted with a smile that was as innocent as you could make it before clearing your throat, "Arizona... Hey."
"Well, I was not expecting this...” A small grin spread across her lips and she let out a gleeful laugh, “Actually, you know what I kind of was. Y/N's been acting strange." Arizona smiled with an evil twinkle in her eye, "I can't believe you guys haven't told me!" You quickly shushed her before pulling her into the call room and closing the door behind her. "I love you guys but at least buy me dinner first..." She joked, earning a light slap on the arm from you.
"What are you doing?" You asked, running your hand through your hair and starting to fidget.
Arizona paused, "I was going to take a nap... in the call room. Because that's what-"
Your girlfriend looked at her watch and shrugged at you, "Look at the time, I've got to go." Amelia, spoke up from the corner, sliding out the door without another word.
You went to walk after her but turned to Arizona who was still standing there with a smile on her face, "You scared my girlfriend away." You pouted.
Arizona just wrapped her arms around you and rocked you side to side, "I'm so proud of you!"
"Shut up."
"But you're both so cute."
"Shut up!" You pushed her slightly, laughing.
"And you've finally found someo-"
You gave her one last look before opening the door, "Okay, I'm leaving now!" You said, walking out.
"Love you." She yelled after your disappearing body.
"Love you too." You yelled back before adding on, "And don't you dare tell anyone!”
--------------------------------
"Y/N," You jokingly rolled your eyes when confronted with Arizona leaning on the nurse desk with a big smile on her face. You prepared yourself for the teasing that was inevitably about to come and pretended to be more interested in the paperwork in front of you. The teasing over the past week had been neverending, "Listen, I know I've been making fun of you and your girlfriend all day and I just wanted to let you know that I support you 100%. I promise that I won't let anyone know of your little secret, okay?" You visibly relaxed and looked back up at her.
You smiled, putting your hand over hers, "You know, you didn't need to tell me that. I trusted you from the beginning but thank you all the same."
She nodded and went to leave before turning back to you, "By the way, I've given your girlfriend a little gift - you may want to go up and say hi. She's in the nursery."
Confused, you frowned slightly but didn't question it as you nodded and made your way to the other side of the ward, where all the newborns are kept.
You stepped in front of the window looking into the nursery and felt your heart skip a beat to see Amelia cradling one of the babies. She caught your eye and her eyes twinkled slightly as she looked down at the baby in her arms. You sighed blissfully and stepped into the room.
"Are you terrorizing the children?" You asked, looking around at the other 3 cribs, each holding a tiny, delicate baby. You stepped closer to Amelia, putting an arm around her lower back and looking down at the baby.
"They're our kids without any home, or parents." Amelia whispered, rocking the baby slightly before shifting the pink blanket to cover her head and little waving hand that had fallen out when she was trying to reach up to your girlfriend. "I kind of thought you were just going to end the sentence at, 'they're our kids' and then you would have a lot of explaining to do."
"Surprise!" She sarcastically cheered before one last rock of the baby. Between the two of you, you managed to safely get her back into her cot and tucked up in her blanket before sneaking out the door.
You both stood in each other's embrace for a while, just soaking in each other's love and company.
"Y'know, maybe it's good that people know about us - especially Arizona." You mumble, longingly staring at the bundles left in the nursery, "if it gets us perks like getting to cuddle cute babies during work then I'm so up for coming out to everyone." You joked.
Amelia just nodded, "Me too." You looked up, slightly surprised as it hadn't really been something you had discussed yet. "Hey, you want to stay at mine and get chinese tonight?"
"Do you have the house to yourself?" You asked with surprise, since these are the only times you get to stay round and even then it is like a military mission. "No, it's a full house tonight. I'm introducing you to them."
"Babe, you realise I know your friends and they know me. We're part of the same friendship group."
"I know, but I get to introduce you as my girlfriend." She grinned and began walking back down the corridor, back to work before yelling over her shoulder, "Plus I get to show them pictures of our children!"

Survive
Alex Karev x Sister!Reader
Summary: After many years, Alex meets his little sister again under unexpected circumstances
Word count: 1.5k
Warnings: angst, accident, injuries, medically innacurate
Note: English isn’t my firs language, so I’m sorry if (when) you found mistakes.
Tumblr media
It was hard to figure out Alex. If someone, she knew that the best from all. She was the closest to him, until they were separated to different foster family. That event unutterably shattered them. They were each other’s last promise of safety. That was ripped away from them, and there was nothing they could've done in order to stop that. Neither of them wanted a normal family if that meant that they have to go separate ways. But they had no voice in the matter. Was life ever fair though?
She wanted to be there for him, help him through his first heartbreak, celebrate his graduation with him. She wanted to cry on movies to have Alex laugh at her and maybe sometimes make him waffles.
At first they tried to keep in close touch, but the new forced family didn’t like their continous communication. So it was cut shortly.  The only thing that helped them stay a bit connected was their last name.
Alex didn’t talk about his sister. Not in his personal life, nor in the hospital. Although these two sometimes interwined. His sister was ripped away from him and that was something he couldn’t really process since then. And even if he wanted to talk about her to his friends and collegues, even then he couldn’t because he hadn’t heard about her since. Above that it was many years ago so he thought she wouldn’t even want to hear from him. They both believed this crap. So life went on and neither of them tried to find the other.
✦✧✦✧    ✦✧✦✧    ✦✧✦✧    ✦✧✦✧
The ambulance just rolled in with another case for the Grey- Sloan Memorial Hospital. The paramedics opened the door and immidiately started talking and informing the medical team about the patient and her injuries. Car accident. Fast tachycardia. Internal bleeding. Head and chest injuries. Severe fractures. Collapsed lung. Based on the shared informations it was clear to Owen, Meredith and Pierce that the female on the gurney, in her mid 20s was deep in the woods. They found out that her identity is yet unknown but the scene investigators were going to inform them based on the ID found in the wreck as soon as possible.
The team of three wheeled the patient into the ER and their number was increasing with other nurses and doctors. They were in need of more hands.
„Somebody page Shepherd!” was heard the instruction.
„Okay honey, what’s your name? Can you hear me?”- asked Price while focusing on the stetoscope’s sound. She never got an answer. The girl was out again by the end of the question. The entire room was in a rush, trying to work against time and minimalise the damage what the woman’s body’s suffered.
„We need a chest tube, now!”- and with that Owen got to it.
A nurse suddenly rushed into the room with Amelia who already started to assess the injured person’s condition.
„We have a name, age, blood type…”
As soon as the nurse took in the reaction to her past sentence she realised it would’ve been better if she doesn’t share the information before the surgery. Everyone froze when they heard what was the name. Meredith looked up, and locked her eyes with Owen’s, frowning. Y/N Karev. Karev. That couldn’t be. It must be accidental.
The medical team had to recover, she didn’t have much time. They did the urgent examinations, and headed to the OR, quickly. Even though they didn’t know for sure that Y/N was indeed a relative of Alex or not, they felt some sort of extra pressure, what they had to shut out as the OR door closed.
Some time later in the OR there was so much blood and there was still so much to do. They started doubt if they could stop the bleeding and get to the next task in time. Pierce was worried about Y/N’s heart. Didn’t know if it could take such a pressure for too long. They have to get back if she stabilised a bit. Although Amelia’s stopped the bleeding in the brain, she wanted another scan just to be sure. After some argument between the doctors they decided to close her up and let her rest a bit in the ICU.
Let her rest. But who is she? Meredith although was tired, but had to find Alex. She'd hoped that it’s some kind of misunderstanding. She walked on the long hallway of the hospital, her eyes were scanning the area, she wanted to find Karev. Since it was dark outside, maybe he has finished with his shift and took off with Jo already. No, that wouldn’t be great.
Suddenly at one of the corners they bumped into each other, she'd found Alex.
„What?” - He instantly knew something'd bothered Mer. By how she carried herself, and the look on her face.
„You look like you just saw a ghost.” He meant this as a joke, but his friend didn’t reacted to it like that.
She didn’t want to have this conversation in the middle of the hallway, hell, she didn't want to have this conversation at all, but she couldn’t hold the question in anymore.
„You don’t have a sister who I don’t know about, right?”- she asked desperately.
Alex was staring at his friend. He was expecting almost everything just not this. Why would she ask something like this?
„Wha– what are you talking about?” he was now panicking. Why would she asked something like this in the middle of her shift. It didn’t make sence.
„We just had a surgery on a girl. Her name’s Y/N. With your last name. She isn’t…”
And that was the moment when she knew she didn’t need Karev to answer her question anymore. He already did with his reaction.
He couldn’t think for a moment. He felt like the entire hospital started spinning, while his stomach was growing smaller.
„Where is she?” He felt like his heart was beating almost against his skin tissues while displacing his lungs and ribs out of the way.
„She is in the ICU for now, but Alex…” – he didn’t hear what she said after, because he started sprinting to the stairs leading to the named place. No, this couldn’t be. Sometimes he played with the thought what’d it be like to see her again, to talk to her for the first time in years. He was sure he would be nervous, yes. But he was confident to say that he wouldn’t have thought in his worst nightmare that their reunion would be something like this.
At the nurse station he got the direction to the asked patient’s room. He stepped through the sliding door, and there was no doubt anymore. He was in his sister’s hospital room.
Inside the room there were still nurses adjusting the machines and take her last vitals, but slowly they’d finished for now.
He couldn’t believe what he'd seen. She was so broken. At the first sight he noticed her head was shaved and bandaged. She was attached to a ventilator, covered in bruises and scratches. In his deep thoughts he didn’t even realise that the nurses’d left as well as Meredith was already by his side.
He had to sit down, or else his legs were going to give out.
He didn’t have to ask. He could see that Y/N’s situation was pretty bad. But he wanted to know the details. All of them. Whats up with her brain, how are her organs and limbs and how was and is their oxygen supply? How bad was the bleeding, how many more surgery will be necessary? How many bones were fractured? And who the fuck did this to her? He couldn’t decide which one to ask first if he was going to find his voice.
The doctor and friend standing beside him knew that he would want answers to his unasked questions. So she started to listing out loud what had happened before and during the life saving surgery. Told him who are his sister’s doctors, in case he wanted to get some more info. He had found out that one of the most concerning injuries affected her brain heavily.
Meredith knew exactly how does it feel to watch somebody you love on life support. Hear the ventilator do its job. And even if it’s part of their everyday life as a doctor, it doesn’t prepare them for the case when its not a person whom they know nothing about. She knew there was nothing she could say or do that’d make this easier for him. So she just stroked Alex’s shoulder to let him know that she was there for him, whatever was going to happen and assured him that later she’d send Amelia in, to inform him with the specific details. With that, she left the room.
Alex didn’t know what’d happened to her since he wasn’t a part of her life anymore. He didn’t know why she was in Seattle, hell he didn’t even know if she was going to make it. But he knew for sure that he was going to stay by her side and there isn’t anyone who could debar that this time.
He wouldn’t admit but he was afraid all along that there would be silence after everyone left him alone with his sister. But there wasn’t. He heard the late night traffic of the city, the sirens from the surrounding streets, the machines in the room, and his sobs as well. Even if he only wanted to hear his little sister’s voice.

Even though Amelia is oftentimes busy with her work, being the self proclaimed best neurosurgeon, she still makes time for her girlfriend, who unlike her, doesn’t have such a mess of a schedule. However, she just came to the realization that date nights haven’t happened in a while. She really hasn’t properly seen Y/N in a while.
Which is why, after arriving back home, Amelia’s first mission is to find Y/N. She goes up the stairs, towards their shared bedroom, still wearing her scrubs. She frowns as she steps into the room. No one is there. It’s dark and the bed is messy, which indicates Y/N has been there recently.
The sound of water hits her ears. Amelia knocks on the door opposite of their bedroom, trying to open it, but it’s mocked. “Y/N?” She calls out, growing worried at the silence coming from the other side. “Are you okay in there?” There’s slight humor to her voice, but it’s only there to mask her anxiety.
A quiet yeah comes from the other side of the door, but it doesn’t ease Amelia.
“You think you could open the door for me?” It takes a while, but eventually Amelia can hear the soft clink of the lock. She opens the door carefully, only peeking her head in first. When she sees fully clothes Y/N sitting under the running shower, she steps in the room fully, closing the door behind her so the warmth of the water wouldn’t escape. “What are you doing?” She has a gentle smile on her face as she kneels near Y/N. She recognizes the look in her eyes.
“I think I’m getting sick.” She whispers. Water droplets are getting all over her eyes and mouth, but she doesn’t seem to care.
“Sick?” Amelia shuts the shower off, getting no reaction from Y/N. She sets the back of her hand to her girlfriend’s wet forehead. “You don’t feel warm.” She states quietly.
Y/N hums. Her hands are hidden in the sleeves of the hoodie she’s wearing. It’s oversized, one of her favorites, mostly because it’s technically Amelia’s hoodie. Her eyes are unfocused, so she rarely blinks, only when water slides over her eyes.
“Maybe getting out of the wet clothes would help?” Amelia’s tone makes the sentence sound like a question, but it’s more of a request, as she is already helping Y/N up before she has a chance to answer. She leads her into the bedroom, not caring about the trail of water dripping to the floors. “I’m going to get you some clothes, okay?”
Amelia starts looking through their wardrobe, picking the coziest looking clothes for the both of them. She helps Y/N out of the wet clothes and into the clean ones before she changes out of her scrubs.
“Have you eaten today?” She’s pretty sure she already knows the answer, and it worries her, since she had a ten hour shift today. Y/N shakes her head, confirming Amelia’s fears. “Okay, I’m going to order us some food.”
After leading Y/N to the bed, she picks up her phone and orders the food that’ll arrive to their house the quickest. She sets her phone back down, making sure it’s not silenced so she’ll hear when their food arrives.
She sits down next to Y/N, leaning her bad against the backboard, she pulls Y/N’s back into her chest. “Can you tell me how you’re feeling?” Amelia pulls the covers over them before wrapping her arms around Y/N.
She sighs, slowly leaning the side of her head against Amelia’s. “I don’t know.” She whispers, her voice slightly wobbly. “I don’t feel anything but I’m feeling everything at the same time. It’s like I’m stuck in a hole and I can’t scream for help.” Taking a shaky breath, her voice turns almost too quiet for Amelia to hear, “it feels like it doesn’t matter if I’m dead or alive.”
“Maybe we could go meet up with a psychotherapist together tomorrow?”
Y/N hesitates. Asking for, or receiving help has never been something she can do easily. “I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.”
“But it is.” Amelia states in a way that leaves no room for arguments. “Mental health needs to be always taken seriously.”
Emotions mull through Y/N’s body. She feels guilty and bad for letting Amelia see, for making her worry, that’s not what she wants. She feels like going to psychotherapy would mame it worse, it’d solidify the fact there’s something wrong with her.
Amelia’s embrace turns tighter, bringing Y/N back to the present. Her hands have started shaking, she didn’t notice. “You don’t have to decide now.” Amelia whispers into her ear. “We’ll think and talk about later, okay?” Y/N nods, letting herself relax for now as she lays on her girlfriend, and tries to forget her worries.

It Will Get Better (Grey's Anatomy)
Grey's Anatomy
It wasn't that bad. That's what you told yourself each time. But as the excuses start piling up, Amelia Shepherd can't deny what's in front of her any longer and tries to convince you that it was bad enough to finally do something.
Warnings: Domestic Violence/Abuse
Requested = Yes
Y/L/N = Your Last Name
WOW it has been a hot second. A very hot second. A burning second. Maybe I'm back? I'm so sorry to all the other requests that I just haven't gotten to but I'm going to try to make an effort to write more again.
Tumblr media
Sometimes you felt stupid.
Here you were, a well accomplished and respected surgeon with a soaring career, yet you just couldn't seem to leave.
Sometimes, you would stop and wonder why you couldn't.
Because you loved him.
Because he loved you.
Sometimes you would convince yourself that you would leave. That when night came and he fell asleep, you'd pack a bag and walk out the door. Of course, that never happened, because each time, you'd convince yourself that it was your fault.
You upset him. You shouldn't have picked a fight with him. You deserved what he did to you.
That he was a good man. That he was going to change.
That he loved you.
After an especially rough night, you woke up groaning. Your body was on fire, resisting every move you made. Aching, you managed to get yourself to the bathroom and in the mirror, you examined the damage.
"Shit..." You cursed softly as your fingers traced the blaring purple splotch along your cheek.
This was going to be difficult to cover.
Sighing, you rinsed your face off with cold water and wiped it dry before pulling out your makeup bag. The bruise was already vibrant and you knew that make up wouldn't make it completely disappear. But you were hoping that between the light and the angle, you could make it work.
It was a routine you were all too familiar with.
~~~
"Y/L/N!"
You turned around, looking up from your patient's chart to see a grinning Amelia Shepherd walking towards you.
"Just the person I was looking for," Amelia grinned, her smile infectious.
Amelia Shepherd was the first person you met when you first started working at Grey Sloan after transferring from your previous hospital. She quickly became the first friend that you made too. Realistically, you trusted Amelia with your life.
"I feel like I haven't seen you around much," Amelia commented. "We should do something on a day off, I need some Y/N time."
You chuckled and agreed despite knowing that you would never spend time with your colleagues outside of work because he would never let you.
"What can I do for you?" You asked and began walking towards the nurse's station. Your body still protested every movement though and you couldn't help but let out a soft groan.
Amelia eyed you carefully but let it slide, "I just need a consult."
You nodded and she pulled up the scans, eyes still trained on your expression for any kind of sign of discomfort.
As you carefully examined the scans on Amelia's tablet, you could feel her gaze trained on your face and you felt yourself staring harder at the tablet than necessary.
However, just when you thought you could get away with it, Amelia spoke up before you could open your mouth.
"What happened there?" Amelia softly asked, her hand reaching to your cheek.
You instinctively flinched and Amelia's hand paused before she lowered it.
"Y/N?"
You blushed, "Don't worry about it Amelia, I'm just clumsy and slipped. I hit my face against the table."
Amelia, of course, was not convinced but she sensed the anxiety in your body and let it slide.
"You would let me know if something was wrong right?" Amelia quietly asked and you nodded before forcing a smile on your face.
"Of course I would."
You felt sick lying to Amelia through your smiling teeth but there was a heavy weight in your stomach that made you do it.
He loved you.
~~~
You made a conscious effort to avoid Amelia after that close call. It hurt your heart to do so but you couldn't risk it. You took longer routes to get to places in the hospital when you could. You avoided break rooms that she was in.
Amelia knew you were avoiding her too. She let you have your space for a while but when it became clear that you weren't going to let up any time soon, she began to try to reach out to you.
It was one missed call. Then two. Then you stopped answering texts. You contemplated blocking her altogether but couldn't bring yourself to do it.
One evening after a long shift, you let yourself melt into the comfort of your couch, your partner watching the Seahawks game next to you.
Your phone sounded and you glanced at your screen to see a text message from Amelia. Sighing, you closed your phone and turned it face down on the coffee table.
But it didn't stop.
A series of text messages resulted in a series of dings but as you were reaching out to grab your phone to silence it, your partner's arm pushed past you and ripped your phone off the coffee table.
"What the fuck is so important that it's interrupting the game," He grumbled and looked at the screen. "Amelia?"
"My coworker," You quickly responded. "She's probably just asking about a patient."
He eyed you and you thought you were going to get away with it until his glare hardened.
"Prove it."
You gulped knowing that Amelia's text messages weren't about a patient. Your heart raced as you stumbled for an excuse but your hesitation was more than enough for him to lash out at you.
You weren't sure how long it would have lasted had your pager not gone off. Maybe the whole night for all you knew. Mumbling that you needed to be more transparent with him, he backed off, leaving you to pick yourself up off the floor.
Your body screamed in protest as you gathered yourself as quickly as possible before rushing off to the hospital. A massive trauma had come in and they needed all hands on deck. On your way out, you managed to pop two Advils into your mouth before grabbing your bag.
As you drove to the hospital, your mind raced with excuses to explain the growing bruises on your skin. You knew that in the moment, the hospital would be too busy to question the blotches but the aftermath would be an interrogation.
~~~
Exhausted and burning, you had finally made it through all the surgeries and now all the patients were in recovery. As you closed your eyes, you let yourself relax into the couch in the break room, a steaming cup of tea in your hands.
You felt someone sit down next to you and you didn't need to open your eyes to confirm it was Amelia.
"Let me guess, you fell again?" Amelia spoke softly and you knew it wasn't actually a question.
She knew.
You couldn't bring yourself to say anything. To lie and deny what she knew. To tell the truth and confirm what she knew. You felt your throat tingle as a lump formed and a tear silently escaped your closed eyes.
"You don't need to keep doing this," Amelia said and gently placed her hand on your arm.
You still didn't respond and Amelia took the cup out of your hands before placing it on the table with a soft clink.
"Y/N, look at me," She said but your eyes remained closed.
"Y/N."
Reluctantly, you opened your eyes even though one was beginning to swell shut.
"You deserve better," Amelia spoke with conviction, her gaze focused on your eyes. "It's not your fault, it was never your fault."
You swallowed and shook your head softly, "I can't."
"Yes you can," Amelia said. "You can. I will be here the entire time but you just have to trust me. It will get better if you just trust me on this one."
"He loves me." You replied but your voice quivered.
Amelia's heart broke at your words, "Y/N, this isn't love. Love doesn't hurt like this."
The singular tear that had slipped through your eyes seemed to have been an invitation for the others to follow as your body began to shake with each sob.
Slowly, Amelia wrapped an arm around your shoulders and pulled you close to her side before stroking your hair.
"I promise Y/N, it will get better," She whispered. "You deserve so much better."
You closed your eyes again and took a deep breath as the tears kept dripping down your cheeks.
"Okay," You mumbled back. "I trust you."
The Meeting | Amelia Shepherd x Teen!Reader
Requested by anonymous
Amelia held her coffee in one hand as she used the other to throw her purse on her shoulder. She stepped out of her car and slammed the car door shut. She double clicked the lock button on her key and walked across the parking lot. She neared the door with the paper sign taped onto it, bold black letters written in sharpie "NA MEETING"
Amelia finished her coffee and tossed the cup into the trash. She grabbed the door handle, pulling it open, but she froze when she noticed an unconscious body on the ground in front of the bench pushed up against the wall.
"Hey," Amelia nudged the unconscious body with her foot. "You alive there, buddy?"
"Sadly." The person spoke making Amelia scoot back a little.
"I'm hoping you're here for the meeting." Amelia said as they pushed themselves up and off the ground. She scanned their face finally able to see more than their back. She frowned noticing it was a young girl, no older a teenager. "Wow, you're a baby." Amelia blurted out.
"And you're ancient." The girl snapped back with a look of disgust.
"Ouch." Amelia lightly chuckled. "I'm sorry. I just didn't expect you to be so young."
"Yeah, well." The girl shrugged laying down on the bench.
"Are you here for the NA meeting?" Amelia asked.
The girl looked up at her for a second before letting out a sigh and closing her eye, "I don't know."
"You new to these things?" Amelia asked pushing her legs off the bench to make room for herself.
"I saw the sigh a few days ago. Been trying to find the courage to go in there." The girl explained leaning back. "I almost made it to the room yesterday, but then this old guy saw me before I could go in and he just looked at me like, like I was this sad little beat up puppy."
"You do look like one." Amelia said making the girl glare at her. "I'm kidding." She laughed. "But that's how people are always gonna look at you. You have to ignore it or you'll never make it to a meeting."
"It's annoying." The girl rolled her eyes.
"Well, it's how it is. It's kinda like a punishment for being an addict." Amelia shrugged. The girl sighed and fidgeted with her fingers. "What's your name?"
"y/n." She answered.
"I'm Amelia." Amelia told her. "Would you like to walk in with me?"
"I don't know." y/n shrugged with a frown.
"How old are you?" Amelia asked.
"Sixteen." y/n said.
"You live with your parents?" Amelia questioned.
"Not anymore." y/n said. "They kicked me out almost a year ago."
"I'm sorry." Amelia sighed.
"It's fine. I'm not missing much other than her boyfriends she brings home, and the cold food she'd bring home from her job." y/n shrugged.
"You're a bitter one aren't you?" Amelia chuckled. "How about you come to this meeting with me and then we can go grab some food? My treat." Amelia offered.
"I could use some food, so deal." y/n said standing up and walking to the door. "Can we go somewhere with pancakes? I can never afford them."
"I could go for pancakes." Amelia nodded following her into the building.
Hearts and Choices
Pairing: Amelia Shepherd x Reader
Summary: You were offered by Yang a position that will help further your career in Cardiothoracic instead of your old specialty Plastic Surgery. However, this could mean leaving Amelia behind.
Warning: Abandonment issues (?), (idk if there’s more, but if you think so just tell me so I can add them)
Words: 1.4k
When I was offered to be the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Switzerland, as Yang would be the next Klausmann’s Director of Surgery and Head of Surgical Research, she needed my expertise and helped her manage the load. I wanted to accept it immediately, knowing this would be a big step in my career in Cardiothoracic. However, I need to talk to Amelia. I don’t want to leave her after Meredith is gone, and just last month, Maggie did too. I know how she is when the people close to her are leaving.
I met her when Addie brought me to Seattle Grace. I was with her in Seaside moonlighting. They said she did work at the seaside before, but I hadn’t caught her as she was leaving and going to Seattle to stay with her brother. We weren’t together then, just shameless flirting and almost kissing ‘til Addison interrupted us. We reconnected when Cormac and I transferred with Cristina’s arrangement for him to be Head of Peds and I Head of Cardio but become Head of Plastics instead, as apparently Maggie and Winston are in Cardio now, so I have to find a job. Thankfully, I’m triple certified in plastics before transferring my speciality to become a surgeon in Cardiothoracic. Anyway, before I bore you with my achievements from a young age. Let’s return to my big problem about telling the woman I love about my job offer.
I had just finished my surgery when I saw her about to berate Yasuda as I heard the Kid may have dropped an instrument. I know that intern has been sleeping in on-call rooms, and I wonder what her story is about, but I don’t think the kid needs a lecture. So I had to interrupt.
“Hey, Dr Yasuda and Dr Shepherd. Can I talk to you for a minute?” I said to her and pushed her to a supply room before she could reply. I gave Yasuda a look, and she nodded in appreciation. “Okay, what’s going on, babe? I saw you about to embarrass the intern in front of many nurses and probably her patients.” I asked. She was just looking at the floor and exhausted for the day. “Hey, Amy. Talk to me, babe.” I approached her and raised her head so she could look at me. “I know about the offer,” she said, trying not to look and maintain eye contact. “Oh, okay. Well, first off, why did you look at my emails? That's kinda shitty as my privacy is – “ “I didn't mean to. It was just there in front of me when I asked to use your laptop when you were in the shower,” she interrupted. “Well, you should have just showered with me, you know, and we wouldn’t have this problem,” I said, and I could see that she was hiding a smile. I held her hands and kissed them to get her to calm down. I spoke, “I was going to tell you about it later when we get home, as I don’t want to keep this a secret from you. I love you, Amelia and I want your opinion about it as it would be a huge step for my career.” “Do you want it? Are you planning to take it?” she asked. “Truthfully, it is a very tempting offer and a huge one for me, babe. I was supposed to be here for the head of Cardio, but because Maggie and Winston happened, I had to give that up and become head of Plastics.” I said. “So you are taking it,” she said as she let go of my hand and sat on the floor, trying to settle her feeling and not wanting her tears to fall. I sighed. I followed and sat near her, taking her in my arms and letting her feel me.
“I love you, Amelia. I have never loved someone so unique and complex that each waking moment I have with you is never dull and always unpredictable. When I came back here, you were with Link and also very pregnant, and I know you were happy, so I never disturbed you even when my feelings for you grew so much in the years that I finally know you. Then did you know how much it was killing me to see you being proposed to by Link on that beach? God, I thought my heart would stop, and that’s coming from a world-class cardiothoracic surgeon who knows it is a rare feat, so I left for three months. I went to see Yang and told her my predicament. I helped her in Klausmann, and I tried and tried to forget about my feelings for you, but I can’t. I told her that I had to go home. Home, even though I’m not sure where that was until I saw you performing that flawless operation on David. You were my home even if I wasn’t yours. It was always the wrong timing for us. I didn’t realise that you met Kai and, I guess, gotten to know them, and maybe you love them, but I just let it be.” “Uhmm, excuse me, but you weren’t so available yourself. You were hooking up with the new Plastics surgeon. I thought you didn’t want to do with me. I never expected that you also have feelings for me.” she said. “I know I wasn’t a saint, Amy. I am human too, and I needed people, and I hooked up with people, but you, on the other hand, were always in a relationship, so I didn’t do anything not until after a few months when I saw you in the backyard when Kai left you. I consoled you but kept my distance because I didn’t want to be your rebound.” “You are not my rebound. How many times do I have to tell you that.” “I know, Amy. I know. I just want to tell you that these past few months of being with you are never enough, Babe. I love you so much a-” “But you’re leaving. That’s what people say before they abandon me.” she interrupted again. “God, woman, let me finish.” I held her closer as if she’d run away and said,” I love you so much, and I love my job too. However, after many relationships on your part and flings from mine, I realised that I want it just to be you, and so I told Cristina that I have to talk to you about this, and here we are.” “You’re going to leave me, aren’t you? Just tell me already. Stop my suffering.” she said and hugged me tight.
“You don’t listen, huh? I love you, and I will always choose you, Amy. I’m accepting the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery but not in Zurich. I’ll be accepting it here. I will tell Yang she can offer it to Ndugu even though he shouldn’t leave the hospital. That guy is amazing with his techniques, and Maggie taught him well.” I said. “You're not leaving. You are not leaving?” she said, surprised. “I’m not leaving, baby, but I want to explore the options of having Klausmann and Grey Sloan partner, especially with Cardiothoracic research. Cristina owes me some favours. Maybe she and I can talk about it as well as Teddy. Though I have to talk to Winston and maybe persuade him not to leave and instead be my co-chief.” I said out loud. “Thank you, and I love you. I do.” She said, kissing me passionately as if we didn’t need air to breathe.
We got interrupted when someone walked in, “seriously, you two? Not again.” Addison said. Amelia and I laughed, and I said, amused, “Why is it always you, Addie?” “I don’t know, and I hate you two.” She said and left the room. I got up carrying Amelia with me. I settled her down and said, “We’ll be okay, love. I love you, and I’m staying.”
After the missed opportunities of being with the woman I love, I don’t think I’ll ever leave now that I have the taste of it. I love her and Scout and my profession, so I guess I made the right choice.
Amelia Shepherd x Reader 403 words
A fluffy, short imagine of waking up to a sunny morning and Amelia laying on your chest.
It was early in the morning and the sun was rising, its golden rays spilling into your room through the blinds that you had forgotten to close. Your eyes fell on the pools of discarded clothes thrown onto the floor and a smile softly pulled at the corners of your lips as you recalled the memories from last night.
Your gaze diverted to the figure sleeping on your chest; her dark brown hair messy as you threaded your fingers through it, the skin of her back bare as you drew patterns across the warm surface with a light finger, and her blue eyes shut as she hummed at the feeling. You pressed a kiss to the top of Amelia's head and, unbeknown to you, a smile - more like a grin - made its way onto her pink lips.
"What would you like for breakfast?" You whispered, your breath tickling the shell of her ear and she curled her head into you.
"Pancakes," she mumbled, barley audible, her voice heavy with sleep.
"Pancakes?" You felt Amelia nod her head. "Hmm yeah that's a good choice," you hummed as the smell of the sweet batter filled your senses.
Just as you were beginning to sit up, you felt the pressure of Amelia on top of you increase, trapping you under her weight. You let out a laugh as you returned back to your earlier position.
"How am I meant to make pancakes if you won't let me leave the bed, hm?" You questioned teasingly as she pressed into you further.
"No, just a few more minutes," she pleaded and you rolled your eyes as you wrapped her in your arms.
The steady thumping of your heartbeat sounded under Amelia's ear and, she would never tell you but, it was her favourite sound. She had fallen asleep to the music of your heart beating far too many times to count, and it was the first thing she searched for when she woke up. It brought her comfort, that essential organ beating healthily, to know that you were still breathing, still alive.
The sun warming her face, your fingers through her hair, your hands on her skin, her head on your chest, was always the best way to wake up in her opinion. She had waited a long time for this, peace.
"Alright, I'm hungry," was the last thing she heard before she was pushed off - almost peaceful.
Hello :) Any chance for Amelia X reader(surgeon) fluff ,anything pls ? Amelia deserves better :((
Flirting
Paring: Amelia Shepherd x reader
Summary: In which y/n is flirting with Amelia, but she dosn't notice it.
A/N: I fucking hate it. I didn't have any idea for this, so it's just it. Let's hope that the next one is gonna be better (ノ_・、)
Tumblr media
You were one of the best surgeons at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. And you have liked Amelia since you first met her. She was nice, smart, and beautiful. But you were too scared to tell her. You knew about her past lovers; you didn't even know if she wanted to start a new relationship, so you kept your feelings to yourself. But your feelings started growing more and more, so you made the decision to try with little steps.
"Hey Amelia," you greet her when you walk into lockers.
"Hey, y/n," she smiled at me. "Have you had any cool surgeries today?" she asked, closing her locker.
"Heart transplant."
"And that's interesting. Maybe I'm going to come and watch you?" She asked, which surprised me.
"Really?" I asked, too happy. "I mean, sure. You can come." She smiled at me and walked out of the locker room. On her way out, she passed Maggie, who gave her a soft smile as a greeting.
"Did you just?" Maggie asked, smiling broadly.
"Shut it," you say while putting your shirt on. "I want to take small steps with her."
"So you're just going to flirt with her?" the girl asked.
"Too loud, Maggie, too loud," you say. You then left the locker room, completely ignoring her question.
Tumblr media
As she said, Amelia came.
Through the whole storm, you had a good mood. You even winked at her a few times.
"Sooo," you started when you met her after. "Wanna grab some lunch?" you asked.
"Sure," Amy smiled at you, which you returned as you stared as you made your way to the cafeteria.
"We never really talk a lot; why have you asked me to lunch now?" she asked.
"I just really like you, you know?" you answered, looking straight ahead. "We don't have a lot of time at work to talk either."
"Ah, okay. You're a good friend, you know y/n?" you nooded.
But at this moment, you didn't know if Amelia wasn't feeling the same for you or if she was just being dumb. You felt dumb. And kind of embarrassed because you just told her that you really liked her. Everyone who knew about your crush on Amy was saying that she was feeling the same.
Tumblr media
"She did what?" Maggie asked with her eyes wide open while I was reviewing one of my patients' charts.
"She said that I'm a good friend. After I say that I like her!" I repeat, I am taking a sip of my coffee. "Maybe I wasn't obvious about it?"
"You said you liked her, just after you asked her to go to lunch with you! Is she dumb or something?"
"Don't talk about her like that, please." Maggie rolled her eyes.
"If she's dumb, then it's my turn," she said, then drank her coffee and started walking away. I followed her for a bit.
"Your turn to what?" I asked, and at the same time, my pager went on. I sighed.
"You'll see."
Tumblr media
It was finally the end of my shift. I changed into my normal clothes and locked my locker, and to my surprise, I saw Amelia outside the room. This time, I tried to ignore her. I didn't say 'hello' or smile at her; I just packed my things into my bag and tried to leave.
"You were flirting with me, right?" she asked, making me stop. I took a deep breath.
"I was, Amy. But forget about it," I answered calmly as I approached the doors. Then Amelia laughed, making me stop again.
"I was so dumb," she said, grabbing my wrist.
"Amelia–"
"I really like you too, y/n. More than just a friend." She said it suddenly, leaving a moment of silence between us. I didn't wait after this. I turned around, leaning her against the locker, and then kissed her. She started kissing me back, making me feel satisfied. The kisses grew more passionate as we got closer and closer.
"Dinner. Tonight," Amy suggested, breaking the kiss.
"Sounds good," I answered, kissing her again when I heard the doors open. I grabbed my bag and headed for the door, giving her a wink.
"Text me later, Amy."
I thought that I was getting better | Amelia Shepherd | Grey's Anatomy
Tumblr media
At first it was like an itch, just a little itch in the back of her mind, but Amelia was all to familiar with the feeling. It always intensified when she was stressed, overworked, or burnt out. Sometimes it grew for no apparent reason at all. But no matter what, the itch was always there and it was never going away.
Despite how much she worked on herself, and no matter the high opinions her peers, colleagues, and friends held, she would would always see herself as the junkie who was craving just one more hit, pill, or line. Most of the time she could get over herself, pour her focus and attention away from those thoughts and that itch but as she sat here, staring at the number of one of her old dealers on the bathroom wall, she felt like she had to scratch that incessant itch stronger than ever.
She knew how easy it could be to get pretty much whatever she wanted. One text and maybe half an hour of patiences could send years of hard work spiralling down the sink. It would be so easy, too easy. Amelia turned and grabbed the sink which hadn't been cleaned in what looked like weeks. She focused on her breathing, trying to distract herself but even she knew it was for naught. All of her thoughts were on that phone number, so much so she did not heard the creak of the door opening and (Y/N) walking in.
She approached as calmly as she could. It was clear that Amelia wasn't doing so good but (Y/N) was nevern the best in emotional situations; surgeons don't need good bedside manner.
"You good?" (Y/N) said, instantly wincing at her words. It was very clear that Amelia was not doing very good at all.
It did bring out a sarcastic chuckle though as she loosened her grip on the sink and lifted her head to make eye contact through the mirror. “I thought that I was getting better.”
"At what?"
"At this." Amelia gestured to herself. "At life, at coping, at not wasting every second on drugs or booze, or whatever substance i could find. But one look at my dealer's number and I'm practically drooling like a dog."
"Did you call?"
"What?" Amelia said, watching as (Y/N) pointed to the number on the stall wall. "No, but I wanted to. God do I still want to."
"Progress isn't linear. Sometimes you have ups, sometimes downs but it is progress nonetheless. Before, you would've called that number with no hesitation, but you didn't. That's progress and it is something to be proud of."
"But I wanted too."
"Then that's something to work towards, but that ain't going to happen here. Let's get out of here and you can continue your self lathing where temptation isnt near."
Amelia, still looking at (Y/N) in the mirror, raised her eyebrow as if to say Really? You're making a joke now? but she followed nonetheless. Even with (Y/N)'s poorly timed jokes, anywhere with her was better than here.
Baby Shepherd - Part 7 - Jo Wilson x Shepherd!Sister!Reader
Summary: All of your siblings have children, now that Amelia and Link have Scout. After Jo spends some time with a baby left at Station 19, the two of you begin to think about adoption. Then patient Val Ashton is admitted with an abdominal pregnancy.
A/n: yes it took me over a year but I rewatched season 17 of Grey's Anatomy, cried a lot, and finished this.
"Hey, heard you caught an interesting case... well, a non-COVID case anyway."
Jo gave you a weak smile, thinking for a moment before she decided something.
"Come with me."
///
"This is Luna... she was growing on her mom's liver. Her mom is the patient you heard about." Jo explained, smiling softly as your eyes widened.
"She's so small... but she's a survivor." You stated, pausing as you realised.
"She can't see her mother, can she?" You already knew the answer, but you asked anyway, seeing how sad Jo looked.
"Val really wants to see her too."
"I'm going to go see Val..." You concluded, heading out of the NICU and across the hospital.
///
Everything had gone so quickly. One moment, your wife was trying to take Luna to see her mother before her surgery, and then, Luna's mother had coded. Jo ran the code for an hour, but you both knew she was gone. Val died never knowing her baby, never getting to hold her, or comfort her over more than a video call.
Luna's surgery went well, she was strong, but now she had lost her mother, and her father signed away his parental rights almost immediately. Jo had told you what he had texted to Val, a good luck and a baby emoji.
"She deserves parents who love her. Val loved her, even if her father didn't care that she existed... it sucks, when parents who love us get taken away so early..." you trailed off, the memories of your own father, or lack thereof, since he had died such a long time ago.
///
"Would you be mad at me if I quit surgery... and became an OB/GYN resident instead?" Jo enquired, rolling over in bed to face you, nuzzling into your bare shoulder.
"Well, it's not like Grey Sloan has a rubbish OB/GYN program, you'd get to work with Carina DeLuca... and you'd get to work with Addison, since I'm trying to persuade her to visit post-pandemic, if we ever get there. Plus, I think the residents were getting confused with the amount of Shepherds on the OR board... it wasn't as bad when Derek was here, since it was him and Amelia in neuro, and I was cardio. But now it's cardio, neuro and general surgery... now OB/GYN... like Nancy..."
Jo was silent for a moment as you trailed off, letting out a quiet hum before you spoke again.
"Yeah, Carina and Addison first, I think Nancy and Kathleen are still in shock over our wedding."
"Probably shocked to see you happy... but I love happy on you." Jo replied, grinning as you quickly leaned your head over to kiss her nose.
"I love how happy looks on you too... we're going to be okay. Even when everything sucks, you've got me, and you will always have me." Comforting your wife, you brought her hand up to your mouth to kiss, before she shifted so she could lean over and kiss you properly.
///
"DeLuca deserves a proper funeral. Not a memorial in a car park." Jo murmured, feeling you squeeze her hand as the two of you stood together, leaning into each other and trying to fight back tears as you listened to Andrew's residency application video. How he grew up stealing his older sister's game of Operation.
You were quiet during the drive back from the memorial, confusing your wife for a moment before you finally broke the silence.
"Can we- um... I want a game of Operation, at our place. For any children, doesn't have to be ours, since all my siblings have children... there's even one trying with medical school at the moment but, I-"
"Yes. I will order a game of Operation when we get home." Jo nodded, needing the joy and understanding where you were coming from immediately.
///
"How's Luna doing?" You enquired as Jo walked into the ER, making a beeline towards you as you waited for the incoming patient you were paged down to the ER for.
"She is a genius! She reacts to her name, even though Hayes doesn't seem to think so..." Jo replied, grinning at the thought of Luna, which made you smile in response.
"I'll go up to see her later- the traumas are here!"
///
"Hello, my darling wife, hello, Luna! How are we doing today?" Jo cheered, despite the fact that she was carrying OB/GYN textbooks in her arms, the scene of you stood with Luna in the NICU brightening her day.
"Well, Doctor Shepherd, Luna seems to be doing well according to Hayes, but Luna and I were having a nice chat about animals. I think she reacted when I talked about a giraffe!" you paused to glance down at Luna with a soft smile, "you talk to Bailey yet about OB?"
"Not yet. I know Webber gave me everything to say but... what do you want to watch for movie night tonight?" Jo chewed her lip, her gaze fully on Luna as you hummed.
"Madagascar?"
///
"So, Jo's changing from surgery to OB, hoping you could give her some tips, with your extensive extraordinary qualifications... we're... we're doing okay? Does Henry know how to play Operation?" you were sat by the window, looking out onto a world void of people until hands wrapped around your waist. Your wife's chin resting on your shoulder as you talked with Addison.
"Is that Addison? Can you ask her if I can ask her questions? Carina's going back to Italy for a month... she's getting married though so she's coming back!"
///
"Your mum was Val. We loved Val. You are Luna, and you have a family here. Every time I step into an OR, I think about your mum, and you, and my wife. My wife thinks about you too. Every movie night for a while now, there has been a giraffe. One day you'll get to watch those movies, Luna, I know it."
You smiled as you stood in the NICU doorway, listening to Jo talk to Luna, who smiled as she spoke to the baby girl.
///
Jo was much more tense after she met Luna's legal guardian assigned from CPS, then every time since seeing Carmen Delgato with Luna as each week went. As Hayes put it, social worker, not a parent.
"She deserves parents who love her, not a social worker who sees her as a box to tick on a list." You whispered, having snuck into the NICU to check up on Luna, not realising that Hayes had overheard.
"I'm surprised you two Shepherd haven't put the paperwork through to become her legal parents yet."
"My wife told me about how the social worker wasn't allowing that operation... we're working on it, had to get Jo's background check cleared, and they started looking at my family too. My dad was murdered before I was born, it traumatised my family... they're being thorough." You shrugged off the look on Hayes' face, keeping your gaze on Luna instead.
"All my siblings have children, Jo and I only really started thinking about children after Jo attached to this baby left at Station 19, but it was during DeLuca's memorial that I realised... anyway, we're fighting for Luna, and... we were going to move after the wedding but the pandemic... anyway, we're also looking at moving. Jo wanted to try get Link to foster until we can get the legal stuff sorted, but it's moving faster with both of us than it would if it was just Jo alone trying to get parental rights." You explained, letting out a sigh as Hayes nodded.
///
"Have you spoken to your sisters or your mother about Luna?"
"Nancy will probably try analyse her case, Kathleen will say we're not ready, Liz will be supportive, Amelia is struggling with Link and Scout. She adores them both but she's struggling. Addison is struggling with the pandemic because Jake just works on model trains, and Henry plays videogames at every waking hour. My mother... I think she was concerned at first but I think she worries we'll struggle without help... but there's a vaccine, and we're doctors who understand how to take care of Luna's needs. Besides, my sisters can get their updates from the rare Instagram photo of Luna's hand or foot or something... Luna's our daughter, I'm not listening to them talk about a baby negatively."
///
"Y/n! You're Amelia's sister! Do you know what ring she'd like?" Jo summoned you into a patient room where Luna was staying, revealing Link and three engagement rings.
"Uh... um... right, engagement ring for Amelia... why did you get three? You kept receipts right? You don't need three of them!" you pointed out, leaving Link to nod, closing the boxes and hurrying out after asking the two of you to wish him luck.
"Jo... I don't think Amelia will say yes."
"Oh poop! Merry Christmas everyone..." Jo murmured, her eyes full of panic as you sighed, nodding nervously.
///
You smiled as Jo paced around on the phone, thanking whoever was on the line informing you that the adoption of Luna had been approved.
"She tell you she sold her hospital shares yet?" You enquired, leaving Bailey to pause.
"What's with that face? Bad price?"
"I still have my shares but... it's more the person my wife sold her shares to..." You trailed off, smiling at how you referred to Jo as your wife, and accepting the kiss that Jo gave you as she sat on the picnic bench with you and Bailey.
"Maybe I should just let the person who bought them tell you..." Jo paused, turning the phone around as it began to ring with a video call.
"Miranda! Did you hear the good news?"
Bailey's face fell as Tom Koracick was revealed to now have shares in the ownership of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
"Shepherd. Tell me you didn't. I offered you both character references!" Bailey hissed, whilst Jo hurriedly hung up the call, and the two of you hurried away as Bailey glared.
///
"Welcome home... welcome home Luna, and my darling wife!" Jo smiled, looking around the apartment that was once Jackson's, but the two of you had purchased from him for your family to grow up in.
"I found the Operation game!" You declared with a grin, revealing the box as Jo rolled her eyes playfully.
"I thought you were looking for cutlery!"
Tumblr media
Summary: Amelia Shepherd meets a talented young medical student who wants to learn from her. A close relationship develops between the two of you, with Amelia not only sharing her medical expertise, but also acting as a mentor and friend while you help Amelia regain confidence in herself after botching a surgery that she actually knows by heart.
ᕚ---ᕘ
Amelia Shepherd hurried through the busy hallways of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, her gown flapping behind her as she was summoned to a consultation. Her mind was whirling as she prepared to tend to a new patient when suddenly a gentle voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
"Excuse me, Dr. Shepherd? Would you have a moment for me?" you asked and Amelia turned around, a young woman with a backpack over her shoulder and a stack of books under her arm catching her eye. Your eyes sparkled at her, and the neurosurgeon could immediately see the glint of curiosity in them.
"Of course," Amelia spoke and smiled. She tilted her head to the side and slipped her hands into her coat pockets before continuing. "How can I help you? Are you hurt?"
You stepped closer and held out your hand. "No. My name is y/n y/l/n. I am a medical student interning and I heard that you are one of the best surgeons here. I would really like to learn from you."
Amelia's smile deepened as she saw the determination in your expression. "It's nice to meet you, y/n. And of course I'm happy to help you. What exactly do you want to learn?" she asked and you beamed with joy, keeping pace with her as she continued walking, signaling you with a hand signal to follow her. "Anything you can teach me! I admire your work and want to learn as much as I can from you."
The brunette felt a wave of warmth in her heart. It had been a long time since someone had so enthusiastically asked to be her mentor. Far too long. "Well then let's get started." she said, leading you through the corridors of the hospital to the consultation she was needed for.
In the following days, Amelia and you spent a lot of time together. She showed you the different departments of the hospital, explained complex medical cases and even let you watch some operations. As you worked together, you began to get to know each other better, and Amelia became more and more impressed by your intelligence, ambition, quick wit, and kindness.
One day, while you were taking a break together in the cafeteria, you turned to Amelia with a shy smile. "Could I perhaps ask you for a favor, Dr. Shepherd?"
Amelia nodded and placed a hand on your shoulder while fishing for her fork with the other hand. "Of course, y/n. What's wrong?"
You hesitated for a moment before continuing nervously. "Well, I recently heard about a scholarship available for promising young doctors like myself, but the application process is quite demanding. I was wondering if you could perhaps write me a recommendation?"
Amelia smiled softly and nodded. "Of course I will, y/n. I'm sure you're an excellent candidate. I'm happy to support you and hope to see you here permanently as a medical student." She answered and you beamed with gratitude and relief, barely able to contain your joy. "Thank you, Dr. Shepherd. You have no idea how much this means to me."
"From now on it's Amelia, not Dr. Shepherd." She interrupted and as she continued to smile at you, she couldn't help but feel warm and fulfilled. In you she saw not only a talented young medical student, but also a friend and a possible successor. And she looked forward to supporting you on your journey, just as so many others had supported her when she was an aspiring doctor herself.
ᕚ---ᕘ
The news of your successful acceptance into the prestigious Grey Sloan scholarship spread like wildfire through the hospital, and Amelia couldn't help but beam with pride as she prepared to teach you everything she knew.
When you came to see her in person the next day, Amelia could hardly contain her excitement. “Congratulations, y/n!” she shouted, walking the last few centimeters towards you to pull you into a strong hug.
You grinned widely with joy and returned the hug as you laid your head on her chest and she planted a kiss on the top of your head. "Thank you, Amelia! I couldn't be happier!"
Amelia stepped back and regarded you with a beaming gaze as she wrapped an arm around your shoulder, leading you with her. "You deserve it, y/n. I knew from the beginning that you would make it."
The two of you walked up to a meeting room before you started talking about the future and how you would work together. You were excited to finally have the opportunity to develop the full extent of your knowledge and skills, and the neurosurgeon promised to support you every step of the way.
In the weeks and months that followed, an even closer friendship developed between the two of you. You continued to spend a lot of time together, both in and out of the hospital, sharing your thoughts, fears, and dreams.
Amelia was impressed by your eagerness and insatiable desire to learn and grow. She recognized that you were not only a talented aspiring doctor, but also a remarkable young woman with a strong moral compass and a warm heart.
As a mentor and friend, she stood by you when you needed support, be it with difficult medical cases that she assigned to you or with personal challenges. She encouraged you to do your best and never give up, no matter how big the obstacles might be.
And while Amelia helped you grow professionally and personally, she also found comfort and inspiration in your close friendship and enthusiasm. Together you went through ups and downs, but through your mutual support and affection, you grew stronger and closer together.
For Amelia, you were not just a student or a colleague, but an important companion on her own path, and she was grateful for the chance to have you on her path. Because in you she not only found a mental heir, but also a friend for life. She was able to lean on you especially in the difficult times, like during the time of her brother's death.
She had thrown herself back into work immediately after the funeral without taking a few days off, and now she was standing in front of the mirror in the relaxation room at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, staring at hersel. Her eyes shone uncertainty and self-doubt as she reflected on the events of the last few weeks.
An operation gone wrong. A patient who had suffered. And above all, the agonizing realization that she, an experienced surgeon, had made a mistake. A mistake that could have been avoided. A mistake that haunted her and shook her confidence in her own abilities.
Since her brother's tragic death, Amelia had struggled with grief. She had thrown herself into work to distract herself and numb the pain, but somewhere deep inside her doubt continued to gnaw at her. You had been a constant source of support and comfort during this dark time. As her young student and friend, you had not only supported Amelia with medical matters, but also served as an emotional support, encouraging her and reminding her that she was not alone.
There was a knock on the door that took her out of her thoughts and you walked in, a worried look on your face. "Amelia, how are you?" You asked softly, stepping closer. The brunette sighed and turned to you, her eyes dark with pain. "I'm sorry, y/n. I failed. I should have been more careful, I should have been better."
You moved closer to her and put a hand on her shoulder from behind, giving it a tight squeeze. "Am, everyone makes mistakes sometimes. You're only human." You spoke but she shook her head at your statement, unable to overcome the self-blame that tormented her. "But I should have known, y/n. I should have known better."
You looked at Amelia seriously and then lowered your voice to a very soft, quiet whisper. "Amelia, I know you are going through a difficult time. But I want you to remember who you are. You are an incredibly talented and passionate neurosurgeon. You have helped so many people and saved so many lives. Mistakes don't define your entire career."
Your words slowly penetrated Amelia's veil of self-doubt. She raised her eyes to meet yours, but you nudged her to look back in the mirror. When she had done this, you spread her legs with a light kick of your foot and placed one arm after the other on her hips. "Say it, Amelia."
"I am a superhero, let me fly." She whispered and you made the gesture with your hand that warned her to repeat the sentence. You had her repeat it several times until she realized which reflection she was looking into. "Just one strong and combative personality can make mistakes and still shine as much as you do in your Superman pose."
"Thank you, y/n. It means a lot to me." She spoke much stronger and you smiled softly. "We all need a reminder of who we really are sometimes. You are not alone, and I am here to help you remember."
Amelia threw her arms around you before getting back to work with you. Slowly but surely, Amelia began to regain her confidence in herself. With your support and your regular forcing to pose as Superman whenever she had self-doubts again, she overcame them and returned to her true passion: healing and helping people.
Amelia's journey has not been easy, and there have been many challenges and setbacks along the way. But with your continued support, she found herself back, strengthened by your friendship and unwavering confidence in her.
No Truth In It - Amelia Shepherd/Reader (Grey’s Anatomy)
request: I love your stories!!!! Could you do one with Amelia Shepherd where she and the reader decide to be in a fake relationship for whatever reason you'd like and then eventually it turns into a real relationship? If you do, thank you so much in advance!!! - anon
a/n: these are from my old tumblr thefandomwritings from back in 2018 ! re-vamped and re-purposed!! hope u enjoy and forgive the 2018 me style writing
Tumblr media
Your day had started as a relatively normal day at the hospital. In some ways and in some people's opinions it may not have been normal at all but of course, it had to be taken in perspective.
But you were sure that in anyone's opinion what happened next was somewhat absurd.
The sound of hurried footsteps slowly drew your attention away from the chart you were holding and onto Amelia, power marching down the corridor looking frazzled and slightly panicky. Upon spotting you she smiled and dragged you away from the nurses you had been standing near and whispered, "You have to pretend to be my girlfriend."
"Excuse me?" You asked, taking time to actually look at the woman in front of you, quickly checking for any signs of her needing medical assistance. Surely she needed medical assistance.
She just smiled innocently at you, leaving you feeling ever so slightly bewildered.
"My ex is- you just have to trust me.” She rambled on, still in a bit of a frenzy. “Pretend we're in love."
"I-"
She looked behind you, before interrupting your attempts at making sense of any of this with one demand. "Kiss me."
"I’m sorry... what?" Before you could do, think, or say anything else, Amelia had pulled on the lapels of your coat and brought your body as close to hers as she could. She held your gaze for a few moments and you returned a slightly startled look before she cocked her head to the side slightly. You frowned, nodding a little. Sometimes it was just easier to go along with Amelia’s plans than question them.
Her eyes softened and she smiled, slowly moving forward and brushing your lips with her own. Your hands almost instinctively moved to her waist and hers were cupping your chin, keeping you close to her.
"Ahem, Amelia?" A feminine voice brought you back down to reality and you quickly parted from your colleague, taking a step back and clearing your throat. "Amelia Shepherd!"
"Oh, Joanne... Hi." You watched as she smiled at the woman, a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes making you curious about what was going on (and even more confused in general).
Joanne plowed on, "How are things? What are you up to now? How is the whole rehab thing going?" Asking one question after another. You found that you couldn't help but glare at this Joanne woman for asking such an invasive question and so you took a protective step towards Amelia way more quickly than you had previously stepped away from her. "Oh, and who is this?" She went on to ask, pointing at you but making a point of not looking at you.
Amelia glanced at you and smiled, "This is Y/N. She's my, uh, my girlfriend." You hesitated, sending her another alaramed look before smiling and nodding, eventually deciding that - fuck it - if the only way to be Amelia's girlfriend was through this weird situation of making a possible ex jealous (if that’s what was going on?) then you might as well go for it.
"Oh. Right, you moved on quick." Joanne laughed at her own comment. You felt Amelia tense up next to you and quickly held her back by wrapping an arm around her waist and holding her close to you. She glanced at you and softened again, taking a deep breath. "Well, I must admit that the real reason I came to seek you out today was to give you this."
The woman rummaged in her bag for a few moments, giving you time to properly look at her. It struck you that she really didn't seem like Amelia's type but maybe that was just wishful thinking. After all, the woman standing there was nothing like you and you wanted, more than anything, to be at least somewhat close to being Amelia's type.
Eventually, Joanne found what she was looking for and plucked out a deep pink envelope with a small sigh of satisfaction. She smiled, with a little glint in her eye, as she handed it over to Amelia.
There was an awful silence as Amelia realised what it was, "A wedding invitation?"
"Yes, Josh and I are getting married-" She beamed.
"Wow." Amelia quietly mused but still Joanne carried on, loving the sound of her own voice way too much.
"And I thought you would just love to stop by on my big day... As long as you don't suddenly confess you're still in love with me." She laughed again at her own comment. Your eyes widened at this strange woman and this weird encounter and at the fact that your assumptions had been correct.
"Great."
"Don't worry darling, you're more than welcome to bring a guest. Maybe your roommate or something. Although promise to keep that ghastly woman away from my family. You know they weren't big fans of your friends."
Amelia scoffed, "Sorry, what?" You could see how uncomfortable she was in this situation and to try and make it better, you did the only thing you could think of doing: Make this woman as jealous as you could.
"I'm sure Amelia would love to come but I'm afraid she's...” Your mouth had opened before your brain had decided on something to say, shit. Come on brain! “I'm- we're going house hunting." Okay, so maybe you weren't so great at this whole improv thing.
"Oh?"
You gulped and nodded, "Yes, I-" Amelia brightened up next to you, a cunning smile setting on her face.
"Y/N, surely we can put that on hold until next weekend? We wouldn't want to miss Joanne's wedding, of all things." Joanne tilted her head and let out an unimpressed little laugh.
"You mean, you're bringing her?" She finally looked directly at you, only to scoff and shake her head.
Amelia took hold of your hand again and brought it up to her lips, kissing your skin gently, "Of course."
You frowned, not intending to get yourself this deep in Amelia's dating drama, "You are?" You asked, trying to subtly shake your head.
"Yes. Maybe we can get some inspiration for our wedding." She beamed at you.
Joanne's smile quickly faded and she nodded, "Oh... well. That's just lovely. Marvellous, amazing." She muttered, evidently already hating your guts. "Anyway, I really should get going. I look forward to seeing you there, although if house hunting is planned I really wouldn't want you to miss out."
Amelia fake gasped and shook her head, "Oh, of course not. We're excited, right?" She squeezed your hand and you sighed.
"So excited." You said as sarcastically as you could. Standing next to each other and watching Joanne leave instantly made you feel better. You shuddered slightly and, once again, took a step away from Amelia, "What a vile woman." You muttered, picking your patient's chart back up and trying to focus - stop thinking about the kiss.
"I moved on fast? I moved on fast? She's the one that's getting married for fuck's sake!" Amelia ranted, frustratedly pacing beside you. You rolled your eyes and just grunted in response, trying to pretend your charts were more interesting.
"Mhmm."
"And the way she talked about my friends? Referring to them like that? Fuck you, Joanne." The fuming woman next to you stuck both her middle fingers up in the direction Joanne had left in.
"You do realise, she's gone?" You smiled, finally giving in and leaving your chart to the side.
"Well, I know that." She grumbled and pouted slightly. You both stood in silence for a few seconds, side by side, until Amelia perked up slightly, "But hey, we can show her what's what at her wedding, right? We can prepare. It'll be great-"
You shook your head and turned to face her, "Woah, no. We- I am not going to that wedding." The look on Amelia's face almost made you take it immediately back but then you remembered Joanne was a real life nightmare stuck in a human body, "Oh, come on, I don't know the woman! I don't want to know the woman. She sucks. What the hell were you doing dating her?"
"I know, okay? But firstly, I just want to say thank you for what you just did for me and also-"
"No, we're not going to the wedding. All right? I refuse." You firmly stood your ground, avoiding eye contact with Amelia.
"Why not?"
"Because!"
"Because?" She prompted, shuffling closer to you as she tried to catch your eye, "Hey, besides, I want to show off my girlfriend." You could see her grin slightly in the corner of your eye and you laughed, turning to her once again.
"You don't have a girlfriend!" Whilst there was a tiny ounce of hurt in her eyes, she pushed up her chin and raised an eyebrow.
"Come on! We're going. For me?” She tried again, but you stood firm. No way were you going to this wedding. “And you know, as your boss, I could always fire you if you say no." She smirked and started walking back down the corridor, the same way she had come.
You gasped slightly, "Amelia!"
"What, I'm just saying? Just think, there is bound to be a buffet. Free food?" She wriggled her eyebrows excitedly. You hid your laugh with a scoff and just shook your head. "See you for the wedding, gorgeous. I'll pick you up at 3:00." She shouted over her shoulder before rounding the corner and disappearing from sight.
Time to look for a wedding outfit then.
xxxxxxxxxxxx
"I hate you."
"You love me."
You sighed and crossed your arms over your chest, slouching in your chair, "There's no free buffet."
Amelia scoffed and nodded, "Which is great news." She took another swig at her water, finishing the glass.
"What? No." You shook your head like a small kid, "No, it's not. I've been here for 4 hours and it's the only thing I came for."
"Uh, it's great because it means it's a shit wedding. Everyone knows a great wedding has some kind of buffet." She smiled to herself before biting her lip and looking at your side profile. Even whilst you were sulking she had to admit you were cute, "And besides, I thought you came for my beauty and great skills of persuasion."
You hummed sarcastically, "Maybe the first one, definitely not the second." Amelia tried to hide her grin. Even if you were being sarcastic she still couldn't help the light blush creep onto her cheeks or a butterfly here and there in her stomach. She let the comfortable silence linger as she enjoyed the idea of being in a real relationship with you. The silence came to an end when she spotted a waiter carrying around slices of wedding cake, she called him down and took two slices.
"No free buffet but free cake is still good." She inched her chair closer to you, offering the cake as a symbol of peace. You gratefully took the cake and kissed Amelia's cheek.
Amelia sighed and looked at you in wonder, another great idea soon coming to her. She inched even closer to you and whispered in your ear.
"Hey, Joanne's looking, you gotta kiss me."
You frowned, looking around you, "What? Wher-"
Before you could finish, Amelia softly took your chin in her hand and turned your head to face her, "Hey, I don't make the rules." She softened her voice and slowly leant in, capturing every single feeling and memory that the kiss sparked. For a while, the two of you were in ignorant bliss, just using the excuse of making an ex jealous to move closer.
“Is she still there?” You asked, only inches away from Amelia.
“Let me check.” She looked over your shoulder behind you, and allowed a small frown to form before nodding, “Damn it, she is.”
“Oh, really?” You raised an eyebrow and Amelia shrugged, nodding.
“She’s walking over right now,” She looked back to you, “So we should probably kiss again. Only to make her jealous.”
You smiled, “You dated her for a while, right?” Amelia moved back slightly and slowly nodded, “Does she have a twin?”
She hesitates, clearly confused, “No, why?”
A small grin spread out onto your lips and you nodded over Amelia’s shoulder to the bride, her ex. “Just that I’m pretty sure she’s over there, not watching us.” You shrugged, “I wonder who you saw...” You make a show of looking over your shoulder, knowing that there she was never there to begin with.
“Okay, I’ve been rumbled.” Amelia admits and you turn back around to see her profusely blushing.
You lightly squeeze her hand, “If I’d have thought of using that as an excuse, I would have a long time ago.”
She smiled warmly at you and pressed a kiss to your cheek, “You don’t need an excuse.”
Eventually you pulled slightly away, Amelia's hand still on your thigh, keeping you close. You took a minute just to look at the woman opposite you, really look at her, and to try and remember what this all felt like. It felt like home, like comfort. "Look, it's getting late. Shall I take you home?”
Amelia nodded, gathering her things, “God, I hate weddings.”
"Especially the ones without a buffet." You looked around at all the people trying to make conversation with the strangers next to them as you walked out of the building, desperately trying to avoid being caught by Joanne (which you were successful in).
Amelia looked down at the floor and linked arms with you, "I liked this one a little bit.”
"You did?"
"You made it more bearable."
"I try." You smiled, before moving your arm out from Amelia's and putting it on her lower back, "Come on, let's get you home."
"Mm, you're going to make such a great wife." She teased, getting into the car and shutting the door behind her.
The car ride back had been quick and full of comfortable silence. The radio had been on quietly and you had found yourself just humming along with Amelia next to you, staring at you every now and then.
It became worse once you had arrived at hers. The car ride silence was much more comfortable than this current torture anyway. You hated dating etiquette, especially when you weren't actually dating.
"So, thanks for being my fake partner." Amelia awkwardly smiled, getting her keys out and shuffling her feet as you both stood outside her doorway.
You nodded, "Any time."
She took a deep breath, turned to open the door before turning back to you and shooting you yet another awkward smile, with a little nervous laugh added in this time, "Couldn't have done it without you."
"Yeah, it's been a pleasure." You took a breath to say something, anything. Just so this wouldn't end but you came out with nothing. And all Amelia could add was another filler.
"Yes, good fun."
"Mhmm..." Even worse that all you could add was a noise. Why did brains fail to find the words to say when you needed them most? You were a doctor, for god's sake, you constantly worked under high pressure yet couldn't find a singular appropriate word to say.
You almost praised the lord when Amelia finally jumped the gun and said what you were hoping she would say from the very beginning of the night.
"Do you want to come in?" She hesitated but continued nevertheless, "I can put some coffee on and we can make out for a while." She asked as if it was the most innocent thing in the world. You let a grin spread on your face and let out relieved laugh.
"Now, that's what I'm talking about." You moved closer to her as she excitedly turned round to unlock her front door, "Obviously I'm only doing this as your fake girlfriend." You joked, still unable to cope without being awkward.
Amelia turned round again, standing in her hallway and shook her head, "Nope. Just as us, no fakeness about it." She took your hand to pull you in, and swiftly shut the door behind you.
"That definitely works for me." You nodded before rushing forward back into Amelia's arms for more than just an ex-girlfriend. This was for you, this was what you had wanted all along.
Hail Mary
Amelia Shepherd x yn!little sister
Tumblr media
• You're the youngest of the Shepherd's and you are an addict like Amelia. You disappear on a bender for three weeks and you finally show up on Derek's door step where you find yourself in the middle of your own intervention.•
___
It was the middle of the night and you stumbled up the stairs to your brother's mansion, hastily shoving a key in the door and heading inside.
"Oh, thank god!"
Before you could even process anything you found yourself wrapped up in your sister's arms
"Melia, loosen up!" You groaned as you pushed her away from you and finally took in your surroundings.
Derek, Meredith, Maggie, Cristina, Addison, and your girlfriend Arizona all sat around the living room area with varying looks of concern written on their faces.
"Oh, no. Absolutely not." You refused.
You turned on your heel and stormed back towards the door but not before Amelia could block you.
"Get out of my way."
"No, you're not leaving! I know exactly what happens when you leave here because I've been through this. You're going to sit your ass on that couch and you're going to talk to us because we love you and we refuse to lose you!" Amelia argued.
With a glare and a huff you dropped your bag on the floor and headed to the couch to suffer through this talk with one thing on your mind:
When could you get your next fix?
___
A/N: if y'all would like a longer and more in depth part two, comment and let me know!
Addison walks towards the break room, hoping to find Amelia there before it’s too late. She walks into the room, luckily seeing the youngest Shepherd sitting on the couch, coffee in hand, talking with Maggie Pierce. “Amelia, could I talk to you for a minute?” She says right away, skipping the pleasantries.
With a look, Amelia stands up. “Sure.” She chuckles quietly, slightly nervous. “What’s up?” She asks after Maggie leaves to room for the two.
“I called Doctor Y/L/N here to help me with a patient of mine, she’s arriving today.” She tells, trying to gauge what Amelia’s thoughts are about seeing her ex again. “I wanted to tell you before she’s here.”
“Okay, thanks for telling me.” And with that Amelia leaves the room. Addison sighs, rubbing her forehead. Suddenly she isn’t too sure if she did the right thing, but she really needs Y/N here, she’s the best in her field. She just has to hope everything goes smoothly.
“Addison!” Y/N’s voice calls out excitedly.
The red head turns around to see her doctor friend walking towards her with a bright smile. “Hey, stranger.” Addison laughs, meeting her half way to hug her. “I’m so glad to finally see you. How was the world?” She pulls away, her hands on Y/N’s shoulders to see how much she has changed over the years.
“The world was good.” Y/N decided to leave the practice in Los Angeles to join the Doctors Without Borders, traveling all over the world with them. “How’s Seattle? I didn’t think you’d come back here.” She looks around the hospital. This isn’t her first time in Grey Sloan Memorial, but it has been a long time since she was last here.
“Seattle is good. You know I go where babies need me, and this baby needs us both.” She nods her head forward, so they start walking. “The baby is two months old and his heart is incredibly weak. He won’t survive without a donor heart, but getting a heart that small will take too much time.”
“That’s where I come in.”
“That’s where you come in.” Addison smiles, she missed working with her. “His heart could become strong enough, if you fixed the veins around it.” They walk into a room full of pictures of the baby’s heart and veins.
Y/N looks through the pictures, at times picking one of them up to see it closer. The heart is compromised, and the baby won’t survive long if they do nothing, but the surgery Addison is talking about is incredibly risky. Fortunately, Y/N is a risk taker.
“I can do it,” she states, “but I’m gonna need a lot of help. His vitals need to be monitored closely.”
Letting out a sigh of relief, Addison nods. “I’ll get you anything you need.” She pauses for a moment, contemplating on saying anything. “Amelia is here, you know? Incase you wanted to talk to her.”
“Oh.” Y/N clears her throat, cleaning up the pictures into a neat pile so she wouldn’t have to look at Addison staring at her. “I didn’t know that.” She mumbles.
The now silent and tense atmosphere of the room makes Addison question whether she made the right decision. Amelia is one of the most important people in her life, she’s her sister, but she also cares about Y/N a lot. Their relationship didn’t really end on the best terms, mostly because of Amelia’s addiction, but the relationship itself was good. They both were happiest Addison has ever seen when they were together.
“I’ll make a surgery plan and then get back to you, okay?” Y/N states, not waiting for Addison to answer as she leaves the room.
Her mind is all over the place, which makes her walk through the hallways with less attention than usually, though she does greet the familiar faces going past her. However, she doesn’t notice the person walking right towards her with the same state of mind. So, they crash into each other.
All the pictures Y/N was holding fly to the floor. “Shit, I’m sorry.” She grumbles, kneeling down to gather them.
“Y/N?”
The familiar voice makes her head snap up. Amelia is standing over her, an indescribable look on her face. The exes stare at each other in silence, both unsure what to do. They both knew of the others presence in the hospital, but they didn’t think they’d bump into each other, at least not yet.
Her breath hitches as she looks over Amelia’s face. As much as she doesn’t like admitting it, she missed her. “Amy.” With a mumble, Y/N stands up, dusting off her scrubs.
“Amelia, no one calls me Amy anymore.” She says with a small smile. Y/N just nods, putting it to her mind. “I haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Yeah.”
Amelia scratches the back of her neck. “So, Addison called you.”
“She did.” The pictures are starting to crease in her grip. “There’s a..baby, obviously, uhm, and she needed help.” She clears her throat, looking around for an exit. “I actually have to make a surgery plan for tomorrow, so, I’ll see you around, I guess.”
Going to walk past Amelia, she stops once a hand takes hold of her arm. “Could we talk? Just the two of us, later today.”
The ask makes Y/N hesitant, but the way Amelia is looking at her makes her give in. “Okay.”
“Awesome,” a smile spreads on Amelia’s face, “coffee, after work?”
“I’ll see you then.” She lets go and Y/N walks away, Amelia’s eyes never leaving her back.
Amelia paces around the lobby of the hospital, her mind racing a mile a minute. She has always considered Y/N her biggest love, maybe even soulmate, if she truly believes in them. Seeing her again has brought the feelings back to the surface and she isn’t sure what to do with them.
Her thoughts come to a halt when she notices Y/N walking towards her. Instead of her scrubs, she’s now wearing her everyday clothes. She looks just as beautiful as she did all those years ago. And she decides to tell her so, “you look beautiful.” Y/N hums with a slight smile, her cheeks turn warm, but she pays no mind to it. “There’s a small cafe down the street.”
“Let’s go then.” As they walk side by side, Y/N bites the inside of her cheek, looking down at the pavement. The silence is uncomfortable and they desperately want to break it, but neither of them know what’s appropriate to say in a situation like this. “How have you been?” Y/N decodes to ask, glancing at Amelia.
“Better. A lot better actually. I’ve been sober for a long time, though it’s still hard sometimes. I got two new sisters, sort of,” she chuckles, “Meredith and Maggie. And I’m the head of neuro department.”
“I heard about Derek. I’m sorry.”
“Yeah.” Amelia sighs. “It’s okay.” She opens the door of the cafe for Y/N before stepping inside herself. At the counter, they order their coffees, and when it comes time to pay, Amelia pushes Y/N’s hand away from the machine. “My treat.” She pays both of their coffees.
“You didn’t have to.”
“I wanted to.” They move to the other side pf the counter to wait for their coffees. “It’s the least I can do after,” she pauses, “everything.”
“It wasn’t completely your fault.” She looks away from her. “You were going through a tough time.”
“That’s no excuse. I hurt you and drove away one of the best things in my life.”
Being one of the best things in her life sounds like an exaggeration, but the sincerity in Amelia’s eyes makes her believe she really means it. “You’re also important to me.” Before the conversation van keep on going, the barista shouts their names. They take their coffees and find a quiet corner place to sit.
“So, what have you been doing all there years?”
“I moved around with Doctors Without Borders.” Y/N sips her drink. “Also studied a bit on the side.”
“And your love life?”
If Amelia was anything, she was blunt. If she wanted know something, she’d ask, Y/N usually liked her unfiltered talk. “Love life, huh?” She giggles with a shake of her head. “There were some flings and one time things, you know, to release stress I suppose. But nothing that stayed.” Amelia listens intently while she drinks her coffee. “And you?”
She shrugs. “There was Link and Kai, but just like every relationship I have had, they ended with someone’s heart broken.” Amelia has a grin on her face. She has already gotten over the past two relationships, but it’s still disheartening to have failed relationships.
“Hm, you’ll find your person.”
“Maybe,” Amelia keeps eye contact with Y/N, “I really hope so.”
Looking down, Y/N taps the mug in front of her with her nails, all the feelings around them getting overwhelming. “Listen,” she changes the subject, “could you be in the surgery tomorrow? I need someone to monitor her brain activity, and you are the best there is.” She lifts her head to give Amelia a teasing look. “Or at least you used to be. Have you gotten worse over the years?”
“Worse? Do you know who you’re talking to? I’m better than ever.” Amelia answers to the teasing look with a challenging look of her own. “What I’m hearing is, you need my help because you aren’t in the best shape.” Her elbows are leaning against the table.
“Oh, wow.” Y/N crosses her arms. “Your ego is still sky high.”
Amelia laughs, which Y/N giggle as well.
The surgery has been going on for six hours already, and the whole room is tense. Amelia and Addison are monitoring the baby’s health, while Y/N is rerouting the veins near the heart. The surgery is already nearing its end, but there’s still things to do.
Y/N lets out a sigh, shaking her hand to ease the pain in her wrist. It has stayed on one position for a long time. She can feel multiple pairs of eyes on the side of her head, there’s an audience in the viewing room. This is an once in a lifetime surgery after all. Double checking everything she has done, Y/N lifts her head to her friends. “Are his vitals good?” The two nod. “Alright, we’re ready to close.” She says shakily, not ready to relax just yet. But she can feel the relief coursing through the room.
The sutures closing the opening on the baby’s chest don’t take long, as the wound isn’t as big as on an adult. The moment the last suture is on its place, people in the viewing room start cheering, so do the doctors in the operation room. Addison and one other doctor take the baby to NICU, not before thanking Y/N though.
Walking out of the room, Y/N slumps down to a chair, taking off her scrub cap. Amelia sits down next to her. “Watching you work is seriously magnificent.”
Y/N laughs, “you’re being dramatic.”
“I’m not!” Amelia throws her arm around Y/N’s shoulders, giving her a side hug. “You’re incredibly and I love you.” Y/N turns to look at her. “Give me another chance? Go on a date with me?”
“Okay.”
“Yeah?” Amelia grins widely.
“Yeah.” Y/N smiles too, her heart beating a hundred miles. She isn’t sure if it’s from the surgery she just did, or the fact that Amelia is looking at her like she’s the only person she cares about.
Amelia nods, feeling like she just won the lottery. “I’ll pick you up at eight, wear something pretty.” She kisses her cheek before walking off, going straight to Addison to tell the good news.
“I’ve been riding motorcycles forever,” Y/N’s friend had said.
“We won’t go on the highway,” Y/N’s friend had said.
“It’s perfectly safe,” Y/N’s friend had said.
And yet he had angered another motorcyclist on the road who had intentionally bumped into them, sending her friend (who sat in front) flying. The motorcycle skidded to the side, into a ditch, and Y/N found herself half-underneath the motorcycle. Her right leg was crushed by it while the handle had snapped and was now stabbing Y/N square in the chest.
Looking up at the rich blue sky, Y/N’s first thought was: ‘Shit’. Not only was she in an immeasurable amount of pain, but she had no clue where her friend was and the guy who had hit them had sped away. Thankfully, her phone had been in her left pocket and hadn’t fallen very far. It was still within arms reach, and Y/N managed to grab it and dial 911.
“911, what is your emergency?” The responder on the other line asked.
Y/N explained that she was involved in a motorcycle accident with a friend and told them they needed an ambulance at the road they were at. Once the responder told her not to move, Y/N insisted that she knew that, seeing as her mom — the famous Dr. Addison Montgomery — was a world-class doctor. The responder offered to stay on the line with her, but Y/N said it was alright. She had to call her mom and tell her she was coming, after-all.
“Chris?!” Y/N yelled, calling for her friend. When he didn’t answer, she cursed under her breath.
Y/N dialed her mother’s number and, after a few rings, she picked up. “Hey, kiddo. I just finished a surgery. What’s up?” Addison said.
“Hey, mom. You know how Chris took me out on his motorcycle today?” Y/N began, figuring that there was no beating around the bush.
“Yes . . .” Addison answered, trailing off and sounding a little worried.
“We got into an accident. Another motorcyclist crashed into us. Don’t worry—I already called an ambulance,” Y/N was quick to explain.
“Oh my god,” Addison said, gasping. “Are you and your friend okay?”
At Y/Ns hesitation, Addison let out a sigh.
————————————
Minutes later, Addison got off the phone and headed towards the nurse’s station, rubbing her forehead.
“Everything alright?” Mark asked as he and Derek approached. Other attendings and surgeons (Richard, Bailey, Meredith, Amelia, Lincoln, Owen, Teddy, and Jo) were nearby.
Addison planted her hands on the counter and shook her head, looking down. “Y/N was riding on a motorcycle with her friend and they got into a crash,” she said, her voice quiet.
“Is she okay?” Amelia asked, walking over to Addison and trying to comfort her.
Addison shook her head. “She said she was hurt. A lot,” she answered, trying to control her tears.
Amelia hugged Addison tightly and the rest turned away, giving her some privacy.
“Let’s meet Y/N in the ER,” Bailey advised the group, before leading them there. Amelia and Addison followed behind.
When they got to the ER, Levi and Taryn were wheeling Y/N in but Owen soon toon over. “She has a penetrating wound to the chest from the motorcycle’s handle. Her right leg was also pinned underneath the motorcycle. Stats are okay,” Levi told Owen, before joining Taryn in rolling in the gurney that carried Chris.
“He was unconscious at the crash and has an open wound to the head. Stats are good,” Taryn reported about Chris.
Knowing that Addison needed Amelia and not her ex-husband, Derek jumped to take Chris.
“Schmitt and Helm are with Shepherd. Pierce and Lincoln are with me,” Owen ordered, before pushing Y/N into the Trauma 2 room.
The rest crowded outside Y/N’s room, Amelia, Addison, and Mark pressed up against the window. “She’ll be okay,” Amelia assured Addison, rubbing the redhead’s arm.
They watched as Maggie assessed her chest, Link assessed her leg, and Webber assessed any other injuries. After a few moments, Owen poked his head out of the room. “There’s a lac on her head. Not sure if it’s just a cut or if she hit her head. Shepherd, can you . . .?” He said.
Amelia glanced at Mark. “Stay with her,” she said, and it wasn’t a question, before following Owen back inside.
Addison’s eyes fixated on her ex-sister-in-law, nearly pressing her nose to the glass. She watched as Amelia shined a light in her daughter’s eyes and instructed her to follow simple commands. When Amelia looked up and smiled at her, Addison let herself relax.
After talking to Owen, Amelia came back out. “Maggie is going with Y/N into surgery to remove the bike handle and then Link will have to do a surgery to repair the broken bones in her leg,” she reported, placing her hands on Addison’s shoulders to brace the redhead.
Addison stiffened, shaking her head. Logically, she knew that Y/N would have had to have surgery for the bike handle, but she hadn’t been thinking like a doctor since the second she heard Y/N’s voice over the phone. “Surgery . . .” Addison echoed, trailing off into a slight daze until Y/N was being wheeled out in the hallway.
“Y/N,” she said, gravitating towards her daughter and brushing the hair out of her face.
Although in pain, Y/N managed a smile as she saw her mother was worrying. “‘M okay,” she slurred slightly, from the blood loss and shock.
Addison smiled warmly, masking her fear. “I know,” she said. “I’ll be right by your side the moment you wake up.”
Y/N nodded a bit, and then Owen resumed pushing her on the gurney.
Addison watched until they passed through the doors. Amelia put an arm around her. “I’ll sit with you in the waiting room,” she said.
Amelia guided her towards the seats, with Mark following. The other doctors either prepared to scrub in or, if they could, joined Addison in the waiting room. Amelia sat next to her and Mark sat across from them.
For a while, Addison was silent, too deep in her own thoughts to talk. Amelia, Mark, and a couple others made small talk, but Addison didn’t look up from the floor until Derek joined them.
“Chris is fine, he’s asking about Y/N. Did they take her into surgery already?” Derek asked as he went to sit next to Mark, who nodded.
Addison looked up at her ex-husband and squeezed Amelia’s hand, who squeezed back. “He’s alright?” She asked, just to confirm.
Derek nodded, giving her his usual charming smile. “Y/N will do great,” he assured her.
Addison glanced towards the doors, tapping her foot. “I know,” she murmured, but didn’t sound convinced and didn’t bother to try and fool anyone. “It’s just . . . Two major surgeries. God, she must have been so scared, in so much pain and all alone.” She started tearing up just imagining that, and Amelia gave her a hug.
“Y/N handled it greatly, though, even if she was in pain. She called an ambulance, she called you. She got herself and Chris to safety,” Amelia reminded her, smiling.
“I should call Jake. He and Henry should know what happened,” Addison said.
Knowing that Addison already had enough on her plate with an injured daughter in surgery, Amelia pulled out her phone. “I got it,” she said, before dialing Jake’s phone number.
After a lengthy conversation, Amelia hung up. “Everyone is wishing Y/N well and wants updates. Jake, Henry, Sam, Naomi, Violet, Charlotte . . . you name ‘em,” she said.
Addison smiled, remembering the family she built in L.A. By now, a couple hours had passed. Doctors came and went, Amelia stayed at her side, and Derek and Mark only left if they got paged on an emergency. “Can someone get an update?” Addison requested of the group.
Mark nodded and stood up. “You got it,” he said.
He returned a few minutes later, wearing his usual bright and proud smile. “Pierce successfully removed the handle and Lincoln has already started repairing her bones,” he said.
Addison nodded, smiling and wiping away some stray tears. She shifted a bit in her seat uncomfortably. “I think I’m going go wait in her room,” she said, before standing up.
Amelia, Mark, and Derek all stood up with her. “You guys don’t need to come with me, you have surgeries and work,” Addison said.
“Excuse you, I want to wait for my niece,” Amelia said, and they both shared a smile and a laugh, before walking to the Nurse’s station.
“I second that,” Mark added, following her.
That left Addison and Derek, who turned to face each other. “I’d like to wait for her,” he said, putting his hands into his pockets.
“Are you sure?” Addison asked, not wanting it to be awkward.
Derek nodded. Together, they followed Mark and Amelia to the room that Pierce and Lincoln would be taking Y/N to. When they got there, Addison and Amelia sat on the opposite sides of the currently empty bed and Mark and Derek sat next to them, For the next few hours,  the only movements where either Mark or Derek going on coffee runs, getting snacks, or answering pages.
After what felt like eternity, they brightened up to Y/N being wheeled in. Addison watched anxiously as they transferred her to the bed and got her hooked up to the monitors. When they left, Link stayed behind.
“The surgery went very well. She’s going to need lots of recovery and physical therapy, but I know you’ve been waiting a while, so we can go over that later,” Link said.
“Thank you,” Addison said, before turning full attention to her daughter.
As Link stepped outside, Amelia followed. She wanted to thank him personally for helping out her niece and then went to get an update on Chris, who was staying for overnight observation.
It took a bit for Y/N to wake up from the general anesthesia, but Addison and Amelia were at her side the entire times. Mark and Derek came and went, Link and Maggie checked in, and the other doctors visited. Jake even flew down with Henry and get well soon wishes from the doctors back in L.A.
As terrified as Addison had been, she was just glad that her daughter was alright and was recovering. Trips to Seattle never failed to be anything but interesting, and all Addison (or anyone, really) could do was hope that nothing would top this trip in the ones they were sure to go on in the future.
