4.5th Time’s the Charm

It’s official: four and a half is the amount of rewrites it takes to reach perfection.

Recast Light has now been re-written--not just edited, but re-written--four and a half times. And it’s so much better now. I just finished a scene, from the 4th rewrite, that was pretty convoluted and contrived, but now it’s good and pure and heroic, and just... the platonic form of what that scene always should have been! I love editing.

And now, there’s just one scene left.

Sometimes it is the ‘little things’ that tell the “big story.’ As an example, here, among Confederate prisoners of war taken in the siege of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, are four blacks. Keep in mind, these are POWs. Two of them are listed as “slaves” and two as “free.” “Slaves” in the Confederate army? “Free” blacks in the Confederate Army? What?! They must have been militarily significant to be sent to a POW camp. Slaves sent to a POW camp?! Free blacks sent to a POW camp?! There has to be more to this story.
