2011, April.
16 years old.
There was always this thing between you and being late everywhere. No one around you ever understood how someone so extremely meticulous had such a flaw.
And on that tuesday in april, as usual, you arrived at school fifteen minutes after the hour your first class started. But something differed from your messy routine. Despite the fact that you consistently arrive at this time, you had never witnessed any anomaly where another student coincided with you.
Until that tuesday in april.
You were walking along, calm. You were already late, two minutes or so wouldn't prevent a reprimand from the teachers. But this girl was running as if she was escaping from a dog that wanted to bite her. She looked so anxious and desperate that you instantly realized that it was, quite possibly, the first time she was late for school.
She stopped in front of the entrance, thinking about something, nervous. She was probably worried about being scolded. At that moment she noticed the presence of someone else.
You hadn't noticed that you had stopped to look at her, that you were no longer moving.
Four minutes more or four minutes less, you were still late.
At the time you couldn't tell why, but you wanted to help her.
She turned her head towards you, you both looked at each other somewhat embarrassed. That's when you first heard her voice.
"Do you think I'll be punished for coming at this hour?"
2014, November.
19 years old.
Nayeon. Im Nayeon.
That time you walked her to the classroom, so that she would be calmer, and as children who see everything simpler do, she started to see you as a friend.
She always saw everything simpler than you.
She began by greeting you in the hallways, talking to you if she saw you alone, accompanying you home since you lived far away. Until one day you realized that you were inseparable. Nayeon knew everything about you, and you knew everything about her.
And if your secrets are kept with one person, you go wherever that person is.
So you decided to take the entrance exam and apply to the same university. Hence, all year long you were having study meetings where you sometimes took mock tests.
On the calendar it read the third thursday in November. That was it. Possibly if this didn't work out and you ended up at different universities you would still see each other, but it would be more complicated. You just wanted to always be by each other's side.
"y/n" your friend mentioned your name with that restlessness that always bloomed inside her moments before something big happened.
You turned to look at her. Her brown hair slicked back, held back by a white headband, dressed in her perfectly groomed uniform, nothing out of place. Her eyes, her big brown eyes, crystallized, filled with tears.
You became alarmed, approaching her in strides, taking her face in your fingertips and lifting it so that your pupils found each other.
"What's wrong, Nayeonie?" You asked in alarm, with concern "It's okay, yes? We studied a lot, we prepared for this every second we could, you'll do well, you always do well, you're brillia-"
"Promise me you'll always be by my side." She asked desperately, cutting off your inspirational speech.
"Of course I will, Nayeon."
"No, y/n" she raised her hands towards yours to hold them "promise me that no matter what happens today or any time in our lives, you're not going to leave me, because I know I won't, and I've never been so afraid of losing someone."
Actually, no one was ever afraid of losing you before.
As you held each other, and your surprised eyes blended with her teary ones, the promise was already made. A friend is a light, the place you go when all you know is darkness. A friend is someone you can trust, who will always be there for you. And you are her best friend.
"I promise." You affirmed, smiling.
"Swear it for what's most important to you." She demanded in a somewhat threatening tone, standing on her tiptoes, pressing her index finger to your chest accusingly and with a defiant look.
"I swear on all the memories we have together," you repeated "I will never leave you."
2018, June.
22 years old.
If someone were to ask you for three warnings before talking to Nayeon for the first time, they would be:
Im Nayeon is very loud.
Im Nayeon requires a lot of attention.
Im Nayeon always gets what she wants.
You have proof for the last one. As she wanted to go to the same college as you, she got that.
You were in your third year of college life, on a friday. She had insisted that she wanted to come to this party thrown by some older kids.
The whole damn student body was on the sixth floor of the dorm building, going in and out of room 302.
Damn Korea and its lack of fraternities. Y'all could be at a huge house with the Kappa Kappa Somethings, not this.
You were sober. Since you're not good with alcohol you avoid drinking too much. Not that you like the bitter taste of it either.
You're used to sweet things in your life, like Coca Cola, your mother's orange cake, the scent of azaleas in your grandmother's backyard, and Nayeon.
For her, well, she was completely intoxicated. With cheap beer coursing through her veins.
When she got drunk it was impossible to stop her, her energy levels rose drastically. It made you happy to see her in such a state, she was the life of the party.
You were standing on the sidelines, but seeing your favorite person having so much fun, you felt you had to be part of the moment. Moving your body subtly to the sound of the music, marking the rhythm with every step you took, you slipped through the crowd, appearing next to Nayeon.
The moment she saw you, she began to dance with you. Her hands rested on your shoulders without stopping moving, giving you a glance at times, accompanied by that smile she has when she is secure of herself. With each beat you moved closer to each other. Her palms began to move up the expanse of your neck, resting on the back of your neck, causing you to wrap your arms around her waist to make the position less uncomfortable. Your faces so close that your noses delicately caressed the other's, you both knew the song that was playing and sang every word of it with vigor.
You looked at each other creating a tension between you that to be cut you would have to bring a chainsaw. You had always thought Nayeon was attractive, you're not blind, but you had never looked at her the way you were doing at that moment. You never wanted to kiss her the way you did while dancing at that party full of sweaty, stupid people.
Her eyes scanned every faction of yours, her hand slid from the back of your neck to your cheek. Your grip on her waist firming even more, if that was even possible. She finally stopped to look at your lips, like you look at a plate of food after you haven't had breakfast, lunch or even a snack. Like you look at the lips of the person you've most wanted to kiss since you were sixteen.
But you were not that person for Nayeon.
She moved quickly, turning on her heels, her back towards you. She continued dancing, but now with another friend she had made in a subject in her undergrad. You came back to reality, your mind again recognizing the place and situation you were in, and what had just happened.
You needed to go to the bathroom.
You walked away and after splashing a lot of water on your face and taking a couple of deep breaths, you went back to where the people were. You didn't know what to do, as going with Nayeon was not an option, and your other friends were nowhere in sight. You went to get a beer, your first of the night, and simply leaned against a wall to drink it.
You felt a hand on your shoulder and when you turned your head to see who it was, you found Mina, an exchange student from Japan that you usually sit with in one of your classes. She greeted you and stood chatting with you.
Mina was a shy girl, but she had always been comfortable with you. Nayeon says you have the vibe of a friendly and warm person, so people feel at ease around you.
You would never have thought that you would create such a nice atmosphere that Mina would dare to interrupt one of your sentences by kissing you. Holding onto your neck with a delicate touch and resting her weight on your hand laying on her back.
Breaking away, you gave her a shy little smile, and she gave you an equal one. But yours disappeared as soon as you looked to your side and found your best friend witnessing everything, with a serious expression. And then she simply walked away, leaving the party.
You didn't follow her. You don't know if you should have followed her, maybe you should've, but at that moment you just thought that it wasn't the right thing to do to Mina to just run after the person you had almost kissed before her.
A while later you accepted it, that friday you actually wanted to kiss Nayeon.
2018, December.
23 years old.
After that party, you two didn't speak to each other for two days, but you couldn't resist not being glued together all the time, so you eventually pretended that night never happened and that's surely the one thing you two could never deign to talk about.
Everything was fine for a while, and you never thought that you might have feelings for your friend. Even with the events of that night, it never crossed your mind. It wasn't until christmas of that same year that those doubts awoke in you.
Neither of you were able to spend the holidays with your family, so you decided to spend it together with a few other friends.
Nayeon had said she wanted to introduce someone to you.
And that's when it was.
At a table in a fairly cheap restaurant near campus, surrounded by the people you loved on christmas day. On a tuesday, just like the day you met.
It was then that you realized you had feelings for Nayeon. In the worst way anyone can find out they love someone.
When Nayeon introduced Hyunwoo that night, you gave him your three warnings about her, as if you were giving her away.
The next morning you began the most abrupt detoxification process anyone has ever undertaken.
The night before you realized that you loved her and at the same time that you had just lost her. That morning you'd have to start getting over her.
2021, March.
25 years old.
You're not good at organizing meetings, you've never been, Nayeon takes care of that. But at her engagement celebration, she couldn't be the one in charge of the plans.
Luckily there's Jihyo, who took care of everything, and you just had to send a message to a group chat.
Last night Hyunwoo proposed to your best friend and she accepted. So today, on a wednesday, at her apartment, all her friends gathered to congratulate her.
You weren't over her, how do you get over Im Nayeon, really? You knew everything about her, but not that, not what you needed to know most.
Every day since you realized what was going on inside you about her, the feeling only continued to increase, you found in every moment and action something new about Nayeon that you had noticed before, but now it made your heart race.
And you hated Hyunwoo for being all that was right for her. You hated him because he deserved her, and because he was what she deserved. You hated him because he was indeed going to marry her, and you have no argument to tell your friend not to.
The dinner continued quietly, you chatted about various topics, ate delicious food, had a good time, and above all, drank a lot. As always, not you. You were fresh, fully conscious.
Finally everyone left and only Nayeon and you were left to sleep at her place. You were preparing her bed, as she was in no condition to do it on her own, when you heard her footsteps. You turned around and she was leaning against the door frame. You gave her a smile and continued to put the sheets on. Only a few seconds passed before you felt her arms around your waist and the warmth of her body embrace you. You took a big breath of air to calm the wave of emotions that appeared at the contact, but you couldn't stop your skin from bristling when she kissed the back of your neck softly.
"Nayeon, what are you doing?"
"I love you." She suddenly blurted out.
"I love you too." You replied bringing your hand to one of hers to give her a small caress.
"No, y/n," She inhaled deeply and brought her head up to rest it on your shoulder "I love you." She repeated "As in I'm in love with you."
You've been waiting for years for that, those exact words that came from her lips. You've been waiting years for her to confirm that what you feel is reciprocated. But there you had it, what you've wanted for so long, and it feels sour, bitter. It feels wrong.
"I'll put a mattress down and then you can go to sleep, I'll find some comfortable clothes for you to wear." You took her arms, pulled them away from your torso and began to walk out of the room with quick steps.
"y/n" she called out to you, but you didn't stop "y/n!"
"What?" you stopped moving roughly.
"Aren't you going to say anything?"
"What do you want me to say, Nayeon?" You faced your body to hers "That I'm in love with you too, is that what you want to hear?" your tone was an angry and overwhelmed one "Yes, that's right, I'm in love with you too."
Something inside you felt lighter after saying those words. She finally knew, you had said it, you had let her know that you didn't just see her as your best friend. It felt liberating, but at the same time it felt bad.
"But it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter anymore." You brought your hands to your face, rubbing your temples out of frustration.
"It does matter, y/n, why wouldn't it?" She moved closer to you and tried to touch your face, but you wouldn't let her.
"Because this is not the time you should have told me." You explained, tears appeared "I've been in love with you for years, but I never told you because I felt it wasn't correct because you were with someone else, but then you go and just choose the day after you got engaged to tell me."
You looked into her eyes, those that could lead you to do the most stupid things for her, the ones that always told you the things she didn't know how to say in words, your home, your safe place, the source of your adoration for Nayeon. You looked into her eyes, for the first time, with disappointment.
"If you say you love me as I love you, I will give up everything, y/n, I have always been willing to give up everything for you."
Nayeon always saw everything simpler than you. Her solutions were always the obvious, what you would do based on what you desire, but you analyzed everything more thoroughly, counting the consequences and everything that could go west. At the time, perhaps, she saw you as the love of her life, but for you, in front of you, stood an unfortunate crush from which you would never emerge unscathed.
"Not like this, Nayeon." You shook your head "Not when you got engaged to someone else last night." She crossed her arms and turned away, as if she didn't want to listen to you anymore "Not when you could have told me this three years ago, but you're only doing it now because you feel like you're running out of time and it scares you." You knew her feelings were maybe honest, but not the reasons why she was letting them out "Not when you only seem to love me when you're drunk."
Finally she turned her face to you again and you could see that it was full of teardrops. Any other time you would have run to her, wiped away her crying, kissed her forehead, and done everything you could to make her feel well. Any other time, you would have given her everything she wanted. But that wednesday in march you decided to put yourself before her.
"I'd better go, I don't think it's the right thing for me to sleep here." You announced and left her room, heading for the living room, where you had your things.
She followed you without saying a word, used to the fact that the very act of existing made you weak before her and led you to do everything to please her. You took some of your belongings that were scattered in different places and then your backpack. When you were in front of the door, that's when she realized that you were serious, that this time you wouldn't do what she asked you.
"You promised me you would never leave me." She remembered in a vain attempt to stop you.
"I'm not leaving you, Nayeon, but we both need time away from each other."
2022, January.
26 years old.
Those chaotic moments before you get married bring out your true yearnings, and that's why so many people run away from their weddings.
It's also why you shouldn't get married, to never have that epiphany where you realize that the person waiting for you at the altar is the last thing you want in the world.
Nayeon had ten months, almost a year, to realize that it was you who should be waiting for her to join her for life. Instead she spent all that time arranging a wedding and convincing herself that you were just a whim, that she didn't really love you like she thought she did.
Right there, she was moments away from walking down the aisle, and it all came crashing into her head, a long list of everything she denied all that time.
First of all, she loved you, more than she had ever loved anyone, more than she ever loved Hyunwoo. She has loved you for years.
Second, you loved her too.
Third, she wanted to spend the rest of her life with you and not Hyunwoo.
Fourth, she would have to give Hyunwoo a very big and expensive gift to apologize for this.
Fifth, she was not getting married that saturday in january.
Sixth, she wasted a year convincing you to be the maid of honor at the wedding of the love of your life. Geez.
And finally, seventh, she spent atrocities on a wedding she was about to ditch.
Nayeon stood up suddenly, startling the stylist who was arranging her hair. With an expression of despair in her eyes.
"y/n" she muttered, the poor hairstylist not understanding what she was talking about "y/n!" she repeated shouting this time, alerting everyone in the room "I need to find y/n" she explained.
"Nayeon, it's only a few minutes away, y/n must be positioning herself with the other bridesmaids." Replied her mother who was with her.
She ran out of the room she was in, even with how hard it was to run in her wedding dress. She reached where the bridesmaids were, which luckily was not a place visible to those present at the celebration, as they hadn't taken their place yet.
"Nayeon?" spoke Chaeyoung alerted upon seeing the bride, drawing the attention of all the others "What the fuck are you doing here!?" She asked in a whisper-yell.
"y/n" she repeated breathlessly "call y/n" she demanded.
"y/n is not here, she went out." Jeongyeon warned.
"What do you mean she went out? Where did she go? It's my wedding day and she dares to do whatever the hell she wants" She spoke confused and exhausted.
"She went to the backyard." Added the same girl.
Her friends were about to start asking her questions, but they couldn't, because the moment she knew where y/n was, the girl started running again, as fast as she could.
She really wasn't very fast.
She came outside and saw you, you were standing on the side of the fountain, watching the water fall, smoking. You were the most ethereal thing she had ever seen in her life and she instantly thought about how she never stopped to appreciate your beauty since knowing she loved you.
"y/n" She said for like the eleventh time that day, to which you looked at her.
"What are you doing here? The ceremony is about to start." You threw away your cigarette and walked toward her swiftly.
"It's not like you're where you need to be either." She alluded that you weren't getting ready with her other friends "Let's go."
She took your hand, directing you towards a gate at the back of the place that led to the street.
"What are you doing?" You asked as you stopped her.
"Let's go." She grabbed you again and tried to walk.
"Nayeon, stop it, what are you doing?" You reiterated.
"We're going to be happy together for the rest of our lives." She explained simply, holding you again.
"Nayeon." You took a step back, letting out a sigh.
"No." She stopped you now "Nayeon nothing." She said seriously "I'm not drunk, or delirious. Is this an impulse? Yes, it is, but it's the most honest impulse I've had in my twenty-six years of life."
She took a few steps toward you and put her hand behind your head, causing you to bend down a little, so that you could rest your forehead with hers.
"I love you, quite possibly since our third year of college." She confessed "When I told you the first time I let you go, I understood your point of view, I understood I did things wrong," she assumed "this time maybe I'm doing things wrong again, but I'm not going to let you reject me and leave like that time."
She raised her other arm to throw it softly, in an adoring way around your neck so she could catch you in a kiss, your first kiss. You didn't deny it, you didn't pull away, there was no point in doing that. You discovered that her lips were another of your weaknesses, of which all included her.
"y/n" she said yet again once the kiss was broken "we're going to leave this wedding, we're going to make sweet love, and then you're going to help me figure out how to apologize to Hyunwoo." You laughed, somewhat bitterly, as you felt bad for the man "And after that we're going to love each other forever, yes?"
"Yes."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
—O—O—
the image of nayeon running around with her wedding dress out of breath is actually so pathetic😭

George Harrison and Paul McCartney in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1990s; photos by/© Paul (?), ITV/Shutterstock, Leslie Bryce, Jim Marshall, Linda McCartney, and a screenshot from The Beatles Anthology.
Happy birthday to Paul!
Q: “You met Paul first.” George Harrison: “Yeah, Paul went to school with me. I met him when I was about twelve years old. So I had this guitar, the one I just talked about, and Paul had a trumpet for some reason. His father, in his earlier days, had been involved in a little dance band. He was a piano player. So there was a lot of music in Paul's house too. But [then] we started hanging out together.” - WNEW-FM, 1987
“George put on do-do-do-do [sings the signature riff] which is very much a part of the song [‘And I Love Her’]. Y’know, the opening riff. That, to me, made a stunning difference to the song and whenever I play the song now, I remember the moment George came up with it. That song would not be the same without it.” - Paul McCartney, MOJO, November 2011
“Paul always writes nice melodies.” - George Harrison, Scene and Heard, 8 October 1969
“‘The thing about Paul,’ George says, ‘is that apart from the personal problem of it all, he’s having a wonderful time. He’s going riding and he’s got horses and he’s got a farm in Scotland and he’s happier with his family. And I can dig that.’” - early 1970s; The Blacklisted Journalist, 2001
“I’ve always preferred Paul’s good melodies to his screaming rock & roll tunes. The tune I thought was sensational on the London Town album was ‘I’m Carrying.’” - George Harrison, Rolling Stone, 19 April 1979
“[N]ow we don’t have any problems whatsoever as far as being people is concerned, and it’s quite nice to see him. But I don’t know about being in a band with him, how that would work out. It’s like, we all have our own tunes to do. And my problem was that it would always be very difficult to get in on the act, because Paul was very pushy in that respect. When he succumbed to playing on one of your tunes, he’d always do good. But you’d have to do fifty-nine of Paul’s songs before he’d even listen to one of yours. So, in that respect, it would be very difficult to ever play with him. But, you know, we’re cool as far as being pals goes.” - George Harrison, Rolling Stone, 19 April 1979
“But we do, actually, we do get on. […] I still love him, and it doesn't matter, I’m going to continue my friendship with him regardless of his attitude, because I don’t have time to screw around anymore, you know.” - George Harrison, The Midday Show, February 1988
“Actually, I love Paul, he’s my mate, and it doesn’t matter what they say in the papers, they’re not gonna get much mileage out of that one.” - George Harrison (regarding the media’s claim of a feud between Harrison and McCartney at the San Remo Festival in 1988), Aspel & Company, 5 March 1988
“There’s always a place in my heart for Paul… and Linda.” - George Harrison, Musician, March 1990
Q: “Does Paul still piss you off (tell us the truth)” george_harrison_live: “Scan not a friend with a microscopic glass — You know his faults — Then let his foibles pass.” george_harrison_live: “Old Victorian Proverb.” george_harrison_live: “I'm sure there's enough about me that pisses him off, but I think we have now grown old enough to realize” george_harrison_live: “that we're both pretty damn cute!” - Yahoo web chat, 15 February 2001 (x)

“I am ready for my next assignment,” a beaming Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had declared at a People’s Action Party (PAP) convention last November.
“I am all in, heart and soul,” he said, adding that he has been working hard to get ready for what would be the “biggest responsibility” of his career – to take over the baton from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as Singapore’s next leader.
Now, the assignment has come as Mr Lee announced his retirement on Monday (Apr 15).
Mr Wong will officially take over the leadership reins on May 15, when he becomes Singapore's fourth Prime Minister.
RISE THROUGH THE RANKS
The 51-year-old entered politics in 2011 after being elected as a Member of Parliament in West Coast GRC. He was given his first political office two weeks after the election – as Minister of State for education and defence.
In the 2015 General Election, Mr Wong moved to contest in the new Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, where he has been anchor minister ever since.
By then, he had risen steadily through the ranks with positions in various ministries, including the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth where he was appointed acting minister in 2012 and made full minister two years later.
After the elections in 2015, he moved to head the Ministry of National Development where he stayed on until July 2020.
In 2020, Mr Wong was tasked to co-chair Singapore’s multi-ministry COVID-19 task force with then-Health Minister Gan Kim Yong.   Together with Mr Gan, and later, new Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, he helmed the country’s pandemic response and fronted key announcements at frequently held press conferences.
Political observers later said that it was Mr Wong’s steady leadership style during COVID-19, clear explanation of policies and grasp of details that put him in pole position to take over as the country’s next leader when Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat took himself out of the running for the top job in April 2021.
Mr Heng, then 60, had cited his age as the reason and that he would have “too short a runway” should he become Prime Minister after the pandemic.
Mr Wong, who was then Education Minister, took over the Finance Ministry from Mr Heng in the ensuing Cabinet reshuffle, providing the first hint of his frontrunner position given how the high-profile finance portfolio has traditionally been helmed by PAP heavyweights.
Questions about political succession were finally laid to rest in April 2022 when Mr Wong was named as the leader of the PAP’s fourth-generation, or 4G, team.   Two months later, he was promoted to Deputy Prime Minister in another Cabinet reshuffle, while holding on to his finance portfolio.
Since cementing his standing as Singapore’s next Prime Minister, Mr Wong has fronted major speeches, such as delivering the keynote speech at the May Day Rally last year in place of Mr Lee.
He has also launched the Forward Singapore exercise, which provided a glimpse of how he and the 4G team intends to take the country forward.
A CIVIL SERVANT AND GUITAR LOVER
Prior to entering politics, Mr Wong was a civil servant for 14 years.
He began his career at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1997 before moving on to other roles in the finance and health ministries.
Mr Wong became principal private secretary to the Prime Minister in 2005.
In 2008, he joined the Energy Market Authority as deputy chief executive and was promoted to chief executive in 2009.
Two years later, he stepped down from the post to enter politics as the youngest of five candidates tipped to form the core of the PAP’s 4G leadership.
The Straits Times reported previously that Mr Wong had resigned from the public sector to enter politics, a year short before reaching 15 years of service. Administrative Service officers were eligible for pension after 15 years of service.
“It was a loss, but it was not something that factored into my consideration at the time,” he had said.
On the personal front, Mr Wong grew up in what he described as an “ordinary family” in the Marine Parade HDB estate.
His late father was born in China’s Hainan Island, went to Malaysia as a young boy before moving to Singapore to work in a sales job.
His mother was a teacher. Describing her as a disciplinarian both in school and at home, Mr Wong has spoken highly of his mother in several interviews and public speeches for managing to teach while caring for him and his brother.
Mr Wong is an alumnus of Haig Boys’ Primary where his mother taught. In his teens, he attended Tanjong Katong Secondary School, which he chose because it was near his home, and later on, Victoria Junior College.
He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds a master’s in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
Outside of work, Mr Wong, who is married to Ms Loo Tze Lui, is known to be an avid music lover and skilled guitar player.
His love for the guitar goes back to when his father gave him his first guitar at the age of eight. He spent his weekends borrowing guitar books from the old Marine Parade library and when he got a government scholarship to study in the United States, he made sure to bring his guitar along.
Mr Wong has said that playing the guitar helps him to destress and unwind.
The incoming Prime Minister has posted several videos of him strumming his six string, including an acoustic rendition of American pop star Taylor Swift’s hit song Love Story as a tribute to educators on Teachers’ Day last year.

Back to the "start" [early days 2009-2012]
My college story [pre-diagnosis]: In 2009, I graduated high school. Transfered into the local community college for biology.
Fall 2009: The first semester went great, though I struggled with the History of Western Civilization. That's probably because of unmedicated ADHD and having listened to Western Civ most of my HS experience. That's also when I started reading Glee fanfiction, so I'd often read that instead of study.
Spring 2010: much the same. The vicious combo of Chemistry I, Calc I, and Intro to Literature kicked my butt. However, Western Civ II was amazing.
Summer 2010 [diaster begins] My advisor said the only way I could graduate on time was if I took Calc II and Chem II in the summer. BOY, she screwed me over in so many ways. A D in the Chem II -4 credits [transferable, but have to retake; and F in Calc II -5 credits]. Tanked my GPA and was a sign of something more going on.
I couldn't remember things, I was tired in the morning, and alert in the evening. I could eat a lot without gaining weight, but still feel hungry and awful. I was both high-energy and exhausted. Later, my first Endocrinlogist and my high school anatomy teacher described it as being on uppers and downers at the same time. Or having the gas and break going and spinning in circles burning yourself out.
I continued on with school because I didn't really know what was happening. I was barely 19 and have since learned that both ADHD and LADA can cause issues with mind and body communication.
Fall 2010: I took Bio, Anatomy, U.S. History, and Intro to Psych.
The time of day really impacted how I was doing. I got an A on my first Bio exam at 9 am. Then I proceeded to fail the next 3. U.S. History I couldn't retain the information, disliked it in the first place, and also had it earlier in the day. Anatomy and Psychology were later in the day so I could pass them.
In late October 2010 my dad noticed I had a puffy neck when going to visit relatives. He told my mom to take me to the ER. I had am EKG that had showed concerning results especially witj my heart rate being above 160. They told me I needed to see an endocrinologist. My dad set me up with his. The worst bedside manner known [well probably not] to man, but he saved my life.
Because I could get medicated, I withdrew from two of my classes for medical reasons and managed to pass the other two [no idea how tbh]. I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease with a severe Hyperthyroid and Goider that was impacting my breathing. I was on drugs every 2-4 hours. Then I got my blood drawn, and right before I drank a juice box because it's all I had at the time.
My blood sugar was 512 mg/dl, and my A1C was 11. Type 2 runs in my family, so there was an assumption that that's what it was. I was put on novolog 70/30, but two weeks later, he sent me for antibody testing. 10 days before US Thanksgiving 2011, I got the call that I am Type 1 insulin dependent.
I was immediately taken off the 70/30 and placed on Levemir and Novolog. Relatively high doses as having two autoimmune conditions at once on fire seemed to make my body more resistant to go below 170 ever.
My then endocrinologist said my thyroid was making everything worse, including my airway. Radio active iodine wouldn't shrink it enough. So, I was scheduled for a total Thyroidectomy on April 6, 2011.
Ironically, the area I struggled the most to learn while sick was anatomy, I had to withdraw from Anatomy II 3 different times while in treatment [and once post].
Following the total Thyroidectomy on April 6, 2011, my blood sugar stabilized with low imsulin. I was slowly lowered from 20 levemir twice a day, down to 18 levemir once a day. I was only taking 1-2 units per meal where, before, I was taking 5-7 depending on the carbs. My ratio was still 1:15. My endocrinologist wanted to start me on this "new GLP-1 RA, Victoza" and said he suspected I am LADA, not just Type 1. This means I might have a little pancreatic function left, and using Victoza might foster that insulin sustaining. Taking Victoza allowed me to stop taking fast acting insulin and my A1C was still in the non diabetic range.
I returned in Fall 2011 to continue my degree and was doing really well, primarily getting A's with an occasional B. Unfortunately, with the F and D on my final grades, my GPA was on the lower side, so I had to do really well to get that up. I was very lucky that I was in a guaranteed admissions program from high school that lowered the requirements [though they'd gone up in that time]. So I just needed more than a 2.75 [non-program needed 3.0].
I was able to get it up to 3.93 before I graduated and was able to transfer to a 4-year college.
To be continued...

Meeting Strangers - General Timeline
While there is a general masterpost for Meeting Strangers//Spiegelbilder with stories I’m working on, I needed a somewhat simple timetine that covers the major milestones, so here we go. I’ll be adding links to posted chapters and/or WIP posts to the single events. Things with * are currently worked on most and likely to be posted next. There’s a lot of unrelated oneshots to be found in the other masterpost, that are not linked to these major milestones and thus not listed here.
You can find all posted chapters on AO3 here. General rambling and WIPs on tumblr under this tag. Edits for characters/places/scenes found here.

Today we remember the passing of James Garner who Died: July 19, 2014  in Los Angeles, California
Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928 in Denver, Oklahoma (now a part of Norman, Oklahoma). His parents were Weldon Warren Bumgarner, a widower, and Mildred Scott (Meek), who died five years after his birth. His older brothers were Jack Garner (1926–2011) and Charles Bumgarner (1924-1984), a school administrator. His family was Methodist. After their mother's death, Garner and his brothers were sent to live with relatives. Garner was reunited with his family in 1934, when Weldon remarried.
Garner's father remarried several times. Garner came to hate one of his stepmothers, Wilma, who beat all three boys (especially him). He said that his stepmother also punished him by forcing him to wear a dress in public. When he was 14 years old, he fought with her, knocking her down and choking her to keep her from killing him in retaliation. She left the family and never returned. His brother Jack later commented, "She was a damn no-good woman". Garner's last stepmother was Grace, whom he said he loved and called "Mama Grace", and felt that she was more of a mother to him than anyone else had been.
After the war, Garner joined his father in Los Angeles and enrolled at Hollywood High School, where he was voted the most popular student. A high school gym teacher recommended him for a job modeling Jantzen bathing suits. It paid well ($25 an hour), but in his first interview for the Archives of American Television, he said he hated modeling; he soon quit and returned to Norman. He played football and basketball at Norman High School, and competed on the track and golf teams. However, he dropped out in his senior year. In a 1976 Good Housekeeping magazine interview, he admitted, "I was a terrible student and I never actually graduated from high school, but I got my diploma in the Army."
Shortly after his father's marriage to Wilma broke up, his father moved to Los Angeles, leaving Garner and his brothers in Norman. After working at several jobs he disliked, Garner worked as a merchant mariner in the United States Merchant Marine at age 16 near the end of World War II. He liked the work and his shipmates, but he suffered from chronic seasickness.
Garner enlisted in the California Army National Guard, serving his first 7 months in California. He then went to Korea for 14 months, as a rifleman in the 5th Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War, then part of the 24th Infantry Division. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand by shrapnel from a mortar round, and the second time in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dived into a foxhole. Garner received the Purple Heart in Korea for the first wound. He qualified for a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: "As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy"), but he did not actually receive it until 1983, 32 years after the event.
In 1954, Paul Gregory, a friend whom Garner had met while attending Hollywood High School, persuaded Garner to take a nonspeaking role in the Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, where he was able to study Henry Fonda night after night. During the week of Garner's death, TCM broadcast most of his movies, introduced by Robert Osborne, who said that Fonda's gentle, sincere persona rubbed off on Garner, greatly to Garner's benefit.
Garner subsequently moved to television commercials and eventually to television roles. In 1955, Garner was considered for the lead role in the Western series Cheyenne, but that role went to Clint Walker because the casting director could not reach Garner in time (according to Garner's autobiography). Garner wound up playing an Army officer in the 1955 Cheyenne pilot titled "Mountain Fortress." His first film appearances were in The Girl He Left Behind and Toward the Unknown in 1956.
In 1957, he had a supporting role in the TV anthology series episode on Conflict entitled "Man from 1997," portraying Maureen (Gloria Talbott)'s brother "Red"; the show stars Jacques Sernas as Johnny Vlakos and Charlie Ruggles as elderly Mr. Boyne, a librarian from 1997, and involved a 1997 Almanac that was mistakenly left in the past by Boyne and found by Johnny in a bookstore. The series' producer Roy Huggins noted in his Archive of American Television interview that he subsequently cast Garner as the lead in Maverick due to his comedic facial expressions while playing scenes in "Man from 1997" that were not originally written to be comical. He changed his last name from Bumgarner to Garner after the studio had credited him as "James Garner" without permission. He then legally changed it upon the birth of his first child, when he decided she had too many names.
Nominated for 15 Emmy Awards during his television career, Garner received the award in 1977 as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (The Rockford Files) and in 1987 as executive producer of Promise. For his contribution to the film and television industry, Garner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 1990, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame that same year. In February 2005, he received the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role that year, for The Notebook. When Morgan Freeman won that prize for his work in Million Dollar Baby, Freeman led the audience in a sing-along of the original Maverick theme song, written by David Buttolph and Paul Francis Webster.
Garner was a strong Democratic Party supporter. From 1982, Garner gave at least $29,000 to Federal campaigns, of which over $24,000 was to Democratic Party candidates, including Dennis Kucinich (for Congress in 2002), Dick Gephardt, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, and various Democratic committees and groups.
On August 28, 1963, Garner was one of several celebrities to join Martin Luther King Jr. in the "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom". In his autobiography, Garner recalled sitting in the third row listening to King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
For his role in the 1985 CBS miniseries Space, the character's party affiliation was changed from Republican as in the book to reflect Garner's personal views. Garner said, "My wife would leave me if I played a Republican."
There was an effort by California Democratic party leaders, led by state Senator Herschel Rosenthal, to persuade Garner to seek the Democratic nomination for Governor of California in the 1990 election. However, future United States Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein received the nomination instead, losing to Republican Pete Wilson in the election
Garner was married to Lois Josephine Fleischman Clarke, whom he met at a party in 1956. They married 14 days later on August 17, 1956. "We went to dinner every night for 14 nights. I was just absolutely nuts about her. I spent $77 on our honeymoon, and it about broke me." According to Garner, "Marriage is like the Army; everyone complains, but you'd be surprised at the large number of people who re-enlist." His wife was Jewish.
When Garner and Clarke married, her daughter Kim from a previous marriage was seven years old and recovering from polio. Garner had one daughter with Lois: Greta "Gigi" Garner. In an interview in Good Housekeeping with Garner, his wife, and two daughters, conducted at their home, and published in March 1976, Gigi's age was given as 18 and Kim's as 27.
In 1970, Garner and his wife briefly lived separately for three months. In late 1979, Garner again separated from his wife (around the time The Rockford Files stopped filming), splitting his time between living in Canada and "a rented house in the Valley". The two resumed living together in September 1981, and remained married for the rest of his life. Garner said that the separations were not caused by marital problems, instead stating that he simply needed to spend time alone in order to recover from the stress of acting. Garner died less than a month before their 58th wedding anniversary.
Garner's knees became a chronic problem during the filming of The Rockford Files in the 1970s, with "six or seven knee operations during that time". In 2000, he underwent knee replacement surgery for both of them.
On April 22, 1988, Garner had quintuple bypass heart surgery. Though he recovered rapidly, he was advised to stop smoking. Garner quit smoking 17 years later.
Garner underwent surgery on May 11, 2008, following a severe stroke he had suffered two days earlier. His prognosis was reported to be "very positive". Garner was a private and introverted man, according to family and friends, On July 19, 2014, police and rescue personnel were summoned to Garner's Los Angeles-area home, where they found the actor dead at the age of 86. He had suffered a "massive" heart attack caused by coronary artery disease. He had been in poor health since his stroke in 2008.
Longtime friends Tom Selleck (who worked with Garner on The Rockford Files), Sally Field (who worked with Garner in Murphy's Romance) and Clint Eastwood (who guest-starred with Garner on Maverick and starred in Space Cowboys) reflected on his death. Selleck said, "Jim was a mentor to me and a friend, and I will miss him." Field said, "My heart just broke. There are few people on this planet I have adored as much as Jimmy Garner. I cherish every moment I spent with him and relive them over and over in my head. He was a diamond." Eastwood said, "Garner opened the door for people like Steve McQueen and myself."

We’ve Got A File On You: Win Butler
In a year when a lot of our plans have been on hold, Win Butler has been busy. In April, the Arcade Fire ringleader let us know that the band had been working on music shortly before lockdown, and then he let us hear some of it. Last week, on the night of the election, the band debuted a new song called “Generation A.” Apparently, Butler was one of the people who found quarantine more inspiring than suffocating. Just a couple weeks ago, he amended his previous hints with the update that he’s written “two or three” Arcade Fire albums thanks to having to stay still all year long.
It seems like there’ll be a whole lot of new Arcade Fire goings-on to parse sometime on the horizon, but that isn’t the reason Butler and I got on the phone one recent October afternoon. Butler’s not quite ready to talk about forthcoming music yet, aside from saying this era of writing gives him flashbacks to that which preceded The Suburbs and promising “The new shit is about some of the best shit we’ve ever done” as we say goodbye.
In the meantime, there have been some milestones this year: The Suburbs turned 10; Butler turned 40. There is, of course, a whole lot of rich Arcade Fire history between their early ’00s origins and now. There are too many high-profile collabs to dig through, too many pop culture crossovers to cover, in just one conversation. But before Arcade Fire’s next chapter begins, while we both had a moment of quiet at home in the year 2020, Butler and I took some time to dig back through highlights and surprises from across his career.
Appearing In Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020)
How did this happen?
WIN BUTLER: They were filming in New Orleans. I’m kind of the exact age where Bill & Ted really has a soft spot in my worldview. [Laughs] That was just like, yeah, of course I want to be in the Future Council. That’s the part I was born to play. No, it’s funny, it was just one of these random things that come through the email. Usually, it’s, “Nope, nope, nope, nope.” But this was, “Tell me when, tell me where, I’ll be there.” It was on soundstages. When we were filming it, Tommy Lee from Mötley Crüe was back there, and he sort of disappeared at some point. I got to bring my son, who’s six. He was hanging out and we were talking to Keanu about Canada and punk bands back in the day. It was a pretty sweet hang. It was a bright spot in 2020, let me put it that way.
You say you get these emails — is that random stuff they want Arcade Fire to do, or there’ve been other cameos you turned down?
BUTLER: Oh, no, it’s mostly random licensing or stuff that goes to the junk box. But every once in a while, it’s like, “Hey, that sounds like a nice way to spend the day.” I started out in film. I went to Sarah Lawrence College in New York around 2000. I had really wanted to go to film school, and I could never get in. [Laughs] Initially, the song “The Suburbs” was an idea I had for a film and it seemed easier to make a song than a film.
The Suburbs (2010)
That was a convenient segue. The Suburbs just turned 10. I was wondering if you have gone back and revisited it much amidst that anniversary.
BUTLER: The whole experience of Funeral was such a rollercoaster. We were on the road so long. We didn’t have much of a break going into the second record. For The Suburbs, Régine and I — I don’t think we saw anyone for a year straight before we even started demoing or anything for that record.
It was a time in my life… I don’t know, I was in my late twenties, and there were all these details of my childhood in Houston. You know, I moved to Canada when I was 19. [Houston] almost felt like this other life I had. I would close my eyes and imagine riding my bike through town and trying to find the edges of my memory. There was kind of all this emotion that came up through that, and I wanted to capture it. It’s funny, as a songwriter, most of the time I feel like my mind is living in the near future. You’re listening for these little signals in the air. This was almost inhabiting the emotional space of these memories but thinking about it as the future.
When you say it like that, I’m curious if the album feels different to you now that you’re a father yourself and another 10 years down the line. Like another layer to that refracted youth, sort of?
BUTLER: Totally. In a way, I feel like the last year has been a parallel to that year before The Suburbs. Then I was kind of a hermit by choice, and this has more been the world conspiring to make me a hermit, but it has been a really introspective. In a sense, the material that we’ve been working on feels the same way, this hybrid of your emotional landscape and the future.
It’s almost seasonal, like a trade wind that blows in once in a while. I remember we played with Neil Young when he was still doing the Bridge School Benefit and hearing him sing “Old Man” as an old man, almost like he wrote the song when he was 22 to sing when he was 80. I think there’s an element on that Suburbs record that’s like that as well.
Winning The Grammy For Album Of The Year (2011)
Obviously that was a huge turning point for Arcade Fire because you won the Grammy the following year. As a suburban indie fan at the time, I had no real grasp on how big certain bands were. From where I was, it was pretty trippy that you guys won that.
BUTLER: I mean, tell me about it. It was definitely pretty trippy.
There are very, very early moments of you guys getting linked up with some iconic artists. Arcade Fire got plenty of respect from the beginning. But at the same time, the Grammys is something different. That’s a moment of mainstream insurgency. Ten years on, you’re one of the big indie bands of your generation, but also one of the only rock bands to get to that level in recent times.
BUTLER: I don’t know it was the best record that year, but it was definitely the best record nominated that year. I mean, we were up against a Lady Gaga remix record and like, Katy Perry. We weren’t up against a great Eminem record, we were up against a not-that-great Eminem record. In a certain sense, I was like, “Well, I think we should win.” [Laughs] I think we had the best record.
I remember in high school Radiohead and Björk were the two [new artists I loved]. I bought The Bends the day it came out, I bought Homogenic the day it came out. And then everything else I listened to was artists that had broken up 20 years earlier. I remember watching the Grammys the year OK Computer was nominated and it didn’t win, and I was just like, “Oh, that thing must not mean anything then.” I remember Dylan won, and it’s a really great Dylan record, but objectively OK Computer was the best record. So if that didn’t win, then what the hell does that thing mean? After that, I didn’t think about the Grammys that much. It wasn’t on my list of my dreams of my career and what I could accomplish and what I wanted to do.
For me, I was looking more at a band like the Cure or New Order, these bands that were really just artistic entities but you would hear them at a pharmacy once in a while. Like, I’d hear “Bizarre Love Triangle” come on in the pharmacy in Houston and just be like, “Is this from outer space? What the fuck is this?” My dreams for our band was to do for other people what those bands did for me, which was just throw me a fucking lifeline. Because I was just like, “What is this world, and where are my people, and how can I feel OK existing?” My grandfather played in big bands and played with Louis Armstrong, and he bought me a guitar when I was 15. I held on to that thing — if I didn’t have that I don’t think I would’ve made it out of high school. It literally saved my life. I don’t think I could exist without that.
For me, the Grammy thing was strangely moving. Even up until the moment we won, I just felt like an interloper. Even when we won, people looked at us like aliens. Like, “Who? What?” You know, I’m a competitive person. It was really exciting. Cool, awesome, the universe makes sense for one second. It’s interesting, I didn’t expect it to mean anything until we won, and then it meant something.
David Bowie (2005, 2013, Throughout)
I alluded to this earlier but: The Grammys were like an industry stamp of approval. From the beginning, however, you guys were embraced by a lot of elder artists — particularly artists who were influences on the band. One I wanted to talk about was David Bowie. He was a very early supporter; you performed together in 2005, which turned into a live EP. Then he shows up on “Reflektor” in 2013. Somewhere around 2015, you talked about how you’d come to regard him as this professor-type character in your life. He came to your first New York show, right?
BUTLER: Our first headlining show, when we played at the Bowery, Bowie and David Byrne came to that show.
Wow, no pressure huh.
BUTLER: It sort of set the table. Like, “Well, I guess this is how it’s going to be right out of the gate.” [Laughs] It’s funny, I have a photo of David in my studio that I look at when I’m working sometimes. It’s just him in a dressing room with one of those kind of Hollywood mirrors behind him. He really… I don’t know, he felt some sort of spiritual connection with us. It wasn’t like he wanted anything from us. I just think he wanted to say, “Hey guys, you’re going on the right path, keep going.”
I was emailing him over all those years. I don’t know if you have anyone close to you that’s died and you go back and read those emails, it’s really these strange digital fragments of someone you care about. After he sang on “Reflektor,” Régine and I bought him a painting in Haiti as a thank you gift. We were supposed to mail it to him and we got busy and forgot about it, and in the interim he passed. I knew he wasn’t well, but I didn’t know he was dying. Maybe a couple months later I remembered the painting and I dug it out and it was a painting of a black star. A voodoo painting of a black star with rays coming out of it.
I didn’t know anything about his record being Blackstar or anything like that. Now it’s on the wall of my bedroom. Shit like that sometimes happens in my life. I take it for what it is. I don’t know exactly what that means and I just feel grateful… I don’t know man. Even just how inspiring, what he put into his art even in death. He’s someone I think about at least on a weekly basis.
Backing Up Mick Jagger On SNL (2012), Playing With The Rolling Stones (2013)
Obviously that was an ongoing relationship, and you’ve worked with David Byrne too, and you referenced playing with Neil Young. Still: Being onstage with the Rolling Stones seems particularly daunting.
BUTLER: We were Mick’s backing band on SNL. SNL is maybe one of my favorite American institutions. I don’t know if it’s the Canadian thing since Lorne [Michaels] is Canadian. The first time we did it, it was just like, “This dude is my friend.” I don’t know if Lorne’s kids like Arcade Fire or something. But I was in New York randomly and he was like, “Mick’s doing a thing,” and I said, “We do a pretty amazing cover of ‘The Last Time,’” and he said “Come on down, let’s do it.” Then we’re Mick’s backing band. I don’t know, pretty fucking cool.
What is Mick Jagger like to work with?
BUTLER: Mick is like: As soon as the light goes on, he’s a different person. When he turns it on, it’s like this muscle memory — like if you were with the greatest ballet dancer ever, and you say go and this energy comes out of him that is so practiced. It’s someone who’s an absolute master, after practicing something for decades and decades and decades. That was pretty amazing to see. You’re chatting with someone, we’re at the piano and we’re talking about an arrangement, “OK, let’s do a run,” and then, “Boom! Shit!” There he is.
It’s this other level. I feel like people at that level, music’s not something they’re fucking around with. [Laughs] Music is a spirit. You hear something, and if it strikes a chord with you, it connects something at your deepest core. People like that, when you see them do their thing, it really is this other plane. It’s not this show thing. It’s more of a possession. You can hear it in the music.
I feel like I’ve listened to more music during COVID than any time since I was like, 18. I had this moment when I was listening to these amazing records from the 1950s. You can hear the room. It’s almost like audio VR — you can hear the drummer here and the bass player over here. There’s a sense of space, particularly to that older music. It’s a snapshot. If you hear “La Bamba,” right now, that is what it is. It’s a spirit captured on vinyl, on a piece of tape. It’s alive within that.
With people like Mick, they’re a little bit closer to the spirit of rock ’n’ roll — a literal spirit, not a figurative spirit. Bowie was the same. When he played with us in Central Park, the second he hit the stage he’s illuminated. You’re like, “Oh, shit, that’s what it is.” He’s a human when you’re talking to him and as soon as he’s in it, he’s touched by another thing.
SNL (2007-Present)
I’m glad you brought SNL up, because you’ve been on it a bunch of times, but you’re also one of the musical acts they’ve brought into skits. Like, they actually wrote a game show around you. How does that work? Did they write that sketch with you guys, or you walked in and they’re like, “Hey, by the way…”
BUTLER: I can’t remember, I think we’ve been six or seven times. We’ve been there for a couple different casts at this point. The Lonely Island dudes, those are so my dudes. In another life, I would’ve been in Lonely Island, that would’ve been my dream to just fuck around with my friends; when we were first writing music we were kinda joking around because you’re too insecure to try. A lot of times [at SNL], we’ve played for the staff when we’re there, because you get so fired up to play one or two songs and you’re playing live so your endorphins are running so we just sort of keep playing afterwards. I feel like they appreciate that, it kinda feels like you’re on the same team or something.
I was backstage at SNL once last year, and it is pretty crazy to see it all from the inside like that.
BUTLER: It’s so crazy. They write it all that fucking week, and then to see the differences between the dress rehearsal and the live show. They do a little meeting in Lorne’s office. They’ve done the dress rehearsal and it’s still this tiny office and every cameraman and every cast member is crammed in this little office and Lorne’s like, “Make it a blue light instead of a green light at minute 23, and change this word to this word, I don’t think that’s funny, change that, OK, go,” and everyone’s got pencils writing this down. It’s still fucking that. And you know, it hits and misses sometimes, but they’re doing it.
How long did you have to work on your De Niro impression for that skit?
BUTLER: It’s actually more of a Billy Baldwin impersonation, but it seemed to work for De Niro as well. [Laughs] My only real impression is I can look exactly like Billy Baldwin if I want to. If there’s any casting directors reading this and you need a Billy Baldwin impersonator, I’m your man.
LCD Soundsystem’s Goodbye Show (2011)
You’re the one who ended up serendipitously coining the title of the live album.
BUTLER: [Laughs] That is true. That was genuine. He was being a little talky.
I moved to New York before I moved to Montreal, and I would go to the city and go to shows and I didn’t see one fucking thing that was good in the whole year. I was like, “Wait, I thought New York was the shit, where is it?” All I saw was bad, very industry bands. I couldn’t find anything, I wasn’t cool enough to figure out what was going on. There’s very few bands that I really think of, like bands of my generation where I heard them and thought “These are my people.” For me it was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD, and Wolf Parade. When I heard those bands, I thought, “These are my fellow pilgrims.” It was art, DIY, no bullshit, just trying to make something great that communicates to people. It’s real and emotional.
James is really just one of us. He’s just such a great engineer and really into the way things sound and really passionate about details. It’s rare to meet people like that. James was working with us when Bowie came in, when we were in Electric Lady. James had never met Bowie before. The first 7” he ever bought was “Fame.” We’re in this studio, and the last time Bowie was there he had cut “Fame” with John Lennon, in the same studio. We were all like, “This is the right place to be.”
James is just a man after my own heart. We did a tour with them on Neon Bible. We were playing to a thousand people in Salt Like City and I was like, “Man, in a couple years a lot more people are going to wish they were at this show.” What a fucking great live band.
Scoring Her (2013)
What kind of headspace did you have to get into for this vs. making an album?
BUTLER: Spike [Jonze] came to a bunch of our early shows on Funeral. The second I met him he was just immediately one of my best friends. He thinks about the world the same way. Even though we work in different mediums he was someone I knew I’d be working with in some capacity. I was visiting LA and I was staying with Spike just randomly one time, in the early days of him working on the script for Her. I was reading the script and immediately thinking about how it could sound, and I was like, “Well, we should fucking do the score to this movie.”
When you’re working on a record, it’s so rigid, what works on a song and what doesn’t work on a song. It can be so limiting in a way. Within the band, there’s so many different talents and color palettes and things people bring to the table, so it was cool to do something where the boss is the picture. It doesn’t matter how anyone feels about a piece, if it’s working for Spike, if it’s working in harmony with the picture, that’s what the boss is — the emotionality of the picture. It’s not about you, it’s in service to this bigger thing. It was a cool opportunity for all of us to use different aspects of things we do, and to work with Owen [Pallett], who had done a lot of strings on our records. It uses a totally different part of your brain.
Do you want to do more of that kind of work, or was it this specific story from Spike that spoke to you?
BUTLER: I can say pretty confidently that I’ll work with Spike in the future. It definitely takes a lot of energy. It’s definitely something I’m interested in, but I feel like while I’ve got the juice it’s good to spend as much energy writing songs as we can. It’s pretty fucking hard to make a record, believe it or not.
Future’s “Might As Well” Sampling “Owl” From Her(2017)
Are you a big Future fan?
BUTLER: I love Future. There’s something in the rhythm of the thing he does that actually reminds me of some music from Haiti, in this really deep, subtle way I can’t put my finger on. There’s something almost mystical in the way he sounds, and I thought that was really cool that they sampled that soundtrack. His shit does sound like the future still. I think it’s pretty special.
The Reach Of ”Wake Up” (2004-Present)
This song has had this big pop-culture reach over the years. U2 used it as their walk-on music in the ‘00s. It was used in the trailer for another Spike movie, Where The Wild Things Are. Macy Gray and John Legend both covered it. Microsoft ripped it off for a commercial. It was used in a commercial for LA’s bid for the Olympics.
BUTLER: That Microsoft money went to Haiti, by the way. They did rip it off. [Laughs] Thank you Microsoft.
As far as I know that’s far from an exhaustive list, too. It’s just one of those songs that’s gone out and become a part of the atmosphere. Even a lot of big bands don’t necessarily have a song like that. What do you think it is about “Wake Up” that’s registered in so many different contexts?
BUTLER: From the time we wrote that song to now, the biggest difference in my life is I’ve traveled the world and I’ve been able to play music in all these different cultures and feel the ways different countries feel music. Not only listening to the music in other countries but seeing how they feel the music I play.
I remember around The Suburbs we played in rural Haiti. It was our first time playing in a place where nobody in the audience had any of the reference points of the music we played. We were playing in the mountains, there were people walking in barefoot to the concert. We were playing these songs we had been touring the world with, and the energy from the crowd was so different. The things they responded to, the things they felt, it actually fundamentally changed the way I heard my own music. It made me start to think about music not just from my own perspective but culturally how people hear it and feel it.
I think the one thing that kind of transcends everything across all cultures is melody. Régine was playing that melody on piano in our rehearsal room. I hear it like it was yesterday. It was like, “That’s the shit.” [Laughs] Being present and being in the room, hearing something and really giving yourself to it, just singing that shit like it really meant it and feeling the power of that melody and trying to push it until it breaks. That’s something I think about, just how great it is to have people to play music with. To say it like you mean it.
I remember singing that song in Montreal, in these lofts. Most of our early fans, the first time we played that song, they were like “Fuck this shit, I want the acoustic shit.” People were so negative. I remember a lot of early fans didn’t come to our shows after that because we were suddenly screaming at the top of our lungs and playing electric guitars. It was like, “Everyone here hates this, that means we must be going in the right direction.” [Laughs] But yeah, don’t be discouraged if people hate something. It doesn’t mean shit.

#DegrassiOnThisDay
Lately I’ve been wanting to do a Degrassi re-watch, but I always struggle with where to start. Do I start with a recent season like S13, or should I go all the way back to Degrassi Junior High or TNG Season 1? Then today I was thinking about making a #DegrassiOnThisDay Twitter thread to share what episodes premiered on this date and how long ago. This got me thinking that I could also watch the episodes that premiered on this day. It would be a fun way to re-watch random episodes throughout the year from all different eras of Degrassi. I made a calendar of what episodes premiered when, and I thought I’d share it in case anyone else wants to participate.
How to read this:
Each date indicates which episodes premiered on that day and also the year (e.g. KODS Episode 108 premiered on January 2, 1983 and TNG Episode 609 and 610 premiered on January 2, 2007).
I used short form for each ‘era’ of Degrassi
KODS = The Kids of Degrassi Street
DJH – Degrassi Junior High
DH = Degrassi High
TNG = Degrassi: The Next Generation
DNC = Degrassi Next Class
For each episode, I indicated the very first date it aired. Most of the time this is also the Canadian airdate, but some episodes did premiere in the US first and in those cases I called this out. However Australia airing DNC S2 first is not included
For DNC, I indicated both the Netflix release date and the Family Channel TV premiere, so the episodes are spread out more
I also included the airdates of some of the Degrassi documentaries/specials from over the years

i turn 29 next week (and i am trying to be ok with it lol) so im having an internal review of the past 10 years. LONG POST ALERT
2011 (18-19) - i had a nervous breakdown in march and things were really terrible all year. i dont think i was ever the same after this. (but then - are you ever the same after anything?) i had graduated from high school in 2010 and had no plans or direction for the future really, and things were difficult at home, with my gran dying in march as well, which was my first real bereavement. i was quite lonely as everyone had gone to uni apart from me. i basically spent my time at home, going to appointments, and dodging inpatient care. my mum took time off work to make sure i didnt kill myself, and i think this is the only reason i didnt get commited. i met ben in the summer on tumblr. we were both in a bad place mentally and i was dating someone else (ana, for the drama fans), but he was always very kind to me during the worst year of my life. (the worst year SO FAR!) i may be wrong on the timing here, but 2011 or 2012 was the year my mum was first diagnosed with early stage breast cancer.
2012 (19-20) - i did one final a-level (i ended up with A*AAEU LOOOL) from my bedroom still shaky, but improved enough to go to uni in september to study english literature & linguistics. once there i decided studying literature was an absolute waste of time and not something i’d enjoy anyway so changed to full linguistics. this was something of a rough year too - i hated uni at first and there were a lot of tearful phonecalls home, absolutely hated it. it was the first time i’d been away from home for longer than a few nights. but i stuck it out and managed to get to a point where i didnt exactly enjoy it, but was not crying the entire time, and i was completing all the work anyway. i was still very depressed and anxious the majority of the time, so not a great year.
2013 (20-21) still at uni! in april, I let ben visit me in person for the first time, after months of increasingly intense communications. it went well and very soon afterwards i suspected we’d probably be in it for the long haul. in september i moved out of dorms to a tall and skinny and wildly 70s house in lewes, and the uni experience DRASTICALLY improved. i hate change, so i was still very anxious after moving there, but after i got used to it i really grew to love the town, and i still miss it now. i’d move back in a heartbeat, but it’s probably never going to happen. (coastal, so a bad idea already, and insanely expensive). i was still kind of nuts but slowly improving i think - the lows weren’t as bad as they’d been before.
2014-2015. (21-23) I’m pressing these two together because honestly not much changed. still at uni. did my dissertation on gendered differences in computer-medicated communications. got a 2:1 for the degree. graduated. i was really proud of myself for this, because uni was incredibly difficult to get through, and i managed it. in 2014 i fell in love with a doll (lottie dolls) in a local lewes store (wickle), googled them, and discovered the whole online doll world. i was really inspired to start painting dolls myself, and started doing this in my spare time at uni. moved back home after uni, and decided to see how viable an option this was for a career. it immediately took off, and thankfully i never had to look for a typical job, because i to this day dont think i could cope with one.
2016 (22-24): continued working on dolls from my parents’ house. i transitioned fairly quickly from painting fashion dolls to making wigs for ball-jointed dolls, and that change was very lucrative for me. ana offered me and ben the opportunity to move in with them, because they didn’t want to live in this house alone (lol). i moved here with ben and ana in june. i was still quite unstable, and there were some quite grim periods involving some nasty self-harm.
2017-9 (24-7): literally cannot remember anything that sticks out from these years lol? basically the same as the previous year - living in worcs with ben and ana, working on doll wigs. started playing chess on a whim. started writing fanfiction again in 2018 after nearly a 10y break. joined discord in 2018 and became friendly with a group of people, some of whom im still friendly w/ today. still unstable, still liable to get very distressed at small shit. i spent the majority of 2019 in (private!! >:() therapy, after i became extremely distressed after ben got a cold, but i dont think it helped much.
2020 (27-8): PANDEMIC BABY! also holy fuck can we believe its been 18 months of this shit like seriously? its gone so fucking fast? i, like a lot of other people, had been half-expecting a pandemic for years, so it was not really a shock to me when it happened. i also have OCD so i was already doing everything advised except for masking. basically stopped going outside in 2020, but other than that had a pretty decent time of it hanging out with ben and ana the entire time. as a quite solitary person, it didnt hit me particularly hard, and i think if anything my mental health improved during this period lol. mum’s cancer came back in august, but the doctors believe they got it all (again), and she has the all-clear for now.
2021: (28-9) hello :) here we are! ben proposed in march and i said no! (no sorry not funny i said yes.) slowly but surely improved at chess - now i am quite good. got a second job working for li/chess. passed the anorexia torch to my sister, who is (as of right now) in hospital for it.
at 19: i was frightened, depressed, extremely anxious - so anxious i couldnt eat, most of the time - had little identity outside of mental illness. hobbies were mostly: tumblr, painting, piano.
at (nearly) 29: i am less frightened and less anxious and less depressed. i feel like a real person now. hobbies now: chess, piano, dolls, dioramas, miniatures, ben, tumblr, writing, writing fanfiction specifically. (lol.)
if i have regrets - i regret letting my own insecurities dictate so much of my life. this is still something i am struggling with now - and i hate that it is. i regret letting so many friendships fall by the wayside - or even not giving them a chance - bc of my inability to open up to other people and let them in. i regret letting my own hatred of my body stop me making connections with people. i regret that, because i have done it in the past, but i also still do it, so this is something i need to work on fast so i dont lose any more time to this. i regret spending so much time focusing on everything i hate/d rather than focusing on my capability and potential for joy, fun, humour, learning, skill.
my hopes for the next ten years: marry ben (sooner rather than later, 2023 i hope.), become better at chess (maybe get a title). make new friendships - this is important to me. maybe have an affair for japes. (this is a joke i swear). make peace with my body and my physicality. become better at everything i already do. maybe pick up some more skills on the way, but i dont know what they are yet. pick up relationships that ive dropped in gutters somewhere. become more financially responsible.

Americans less positive about civil liberties: AP-NORC poll (AP) Ten years after the 9/11 attacks, Americans were reasonably positive about the state of their rights and liberties. Today, after 20 years, not as much. Far fewer people now say the government is doing a good job protecting rights including the freedom of speech, the right to vote, the right to bear arms and others. For example, the poll finds that 45% of Americans now say they think the U.S. government is doing a good job defending freedom of speech, compared with 32% who say it’s doing a poor job and 23% who say neither. The share saying the government is doing a good job is down from 71% in 2011 and from 59% in 2015. Dee Geddes, 73, a retiree in Chamberlain, South Dakota, said she was frustrated at the government’s apparent lack of ability to safeguard the amount of private information available, especially online. “It bothers me when I can go on the internet and find pretty much anything about anybody. It makes me feel sort of naked,” said Geddes. About half now say the government is doing a good job protecting freedom of religion, compared with three-quarters who said the same in 2011.
20 years later, fallout from toxic WTC dust cloud grows (AP) The dust cloud caught Carl Sadler near the East River, turning his clothes and hair white as he looked for a way out of Manhattan after escaping from his office at the World Trade Center. Gray powder billowed through the open windows and terrace door of Mariama James’ downtown apartment, settling, inches thick in places, into her rugs and children’s bedroom furniture. Barbara Burnette, a police detective, spat the soot from her mouth and throat for weeks as she worked on the burning rubble pile without a protective mask. Today, all three are among more than 111,000 people enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program, which gives free medical care to people with health problems potentially linked to the dust. Two decades after the twin towers’ collapse, people are still coming forward to report illnesses that might be related to the attacks.
US producer prices jump an unprecedented 8.3% in August (AP) Inflation at the wholesale level climbed 8.3% last month from August 2020, the biggest annual gain since the Labor Department started calculating the 12-month number in 2010. Inflation has been stirring as the economy recovers from last year’s brief but intense coronavirus recession. Supply chain bottlenecks and a shortage of workers have pushed prices higher. Food prices were up 2.9% last month after falling in July. Over the past year, wholesale food prices have climbed 12.7%, including surges of 59.2% for beef and 43.5% for shortening and cooking oil. Energy prices rose 0.4% from July and are up 32.3% over the past year.
Wigged out: A Venezuelan spymaster’s life on the lam (AP) Wigs, a fake moustache, plastic surgery and a new safe house every three months—these are just some of the tools of deception authorities in Spain believe a former Venezuelan spymaster relied on to evade capture on a U.S. warrant for narcoterrorism. The two-year manhunt for Gen. Hugo Carvajal ended Thursday night when police raided a rundown apartment in a quiet Madrid neighborhood where they found the fugitive in a back room holding a sharp knife in what they described as a last desperate attempt to evade arrest. Nicknamed “El Pollo” (“The Chicken”), Carvajal has been a thorn in the side of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration since 2014, when he was arrested in Aruba on a U.S. warrant only to go free after President Nicolás Maduro’s government pressured the small Dutch Caribbean island to release him. While on the lam, he was rumored to be in Portugal, then a hideout in the Caribbean. The reality was much simpler: The 61-year-old had never left Madrid. His last hideout was a mere 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the headquarters of the National Police.
Denmark lifts all coronavirus restrictions and celebrates ‘a whole new era’ (Washington Post) Some countries are setting records for daily covid-19 infections. Others are pursuing sweeping rules to mandate vaccination. But in Denmark, something like normal life has resumed. After nearly 550 days, the Scandinavian country has lifted the last of its domestic pandemic-era restrictions, declaring that the coronavirus is no longer a “critical threat to society.” Denmark appears to be the first European Union member to issue such a declaration, potentially providing a glimpse into the future of the bloc’s recovery—or serving as a cautionary tale of a nation that moved too quickly. The country’s leaders have pointed to its high vaccination rates—among the best in the world, with nearly 75 percent of residents fully immunized—as evidence that the step is justified.
Russia begins major military drills with Belarus after moves toward closer integration (Washington Post) Russia and Belarus began a massive week-long military exercise on NATO’s borders Friday after President Vladimir Putin and Belarus’s leader agreed on a new effort toward integrating the nations, including creating a “single defense space.” The Zapad 2021 exercise, involving 200,000 personnel, has NATO members and other neighboring countries on edge, echoing worries this spring over an unannounced Russian military buildup near Ukraine. The Zapad (meaning West) exercise is held regularly, but this iteration comes as Russian relations with NATO are increasingly fraught.
Pope Francis to visit impoverished Roma quarter in Slovakia (AP) Pope Francis is paying a visit next week to a neighborhood in Slovakia most Slovaks would not even think about going, which until recently even the police would avoid after dark. Francis will make the visit to the Roma community in the Lunik IX quarter of Slovakia’s second largest city of Kosice one of the highlights of his pilgrimage to “the heart of Europe.” Francis will be the first pontiff to meet the most socially excluded minority group in Slovakia. A fitting place to go for the “pope of the peripheries,” Lunik XI is the biggest of about 600 shabby, segregated settlements where the poorest 20% of the country’s 400,000 Roma live. Most lack basics such as running water or sewage systems, gas or electricity. “It’s a huge honor for us,” said Lunik IX mayor Marcel Sana, who has been a local resident since he was 2. “Even if he says just a few words, his presence will be a big boost for all those living here, the socially disadvantaged and poor people who need such support.”
Fleeing China, Hong Kongers flock to Britain (Los Angeles Times) He has no job, he’s still grappling with English and the climate is often cold and wet, but Dennis Chan is still grateful to be setting up his life in Britain. The 34-year-old arrived in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, alone in April after quitting his job as a cargo officer for Cathay Pacific airlines in Hong Kong. He had never set foot in Britain before. But he also felt he didn’t recognize his own homeland any longer amid China’s relentless crackdown on political dissent and civic freedoms. After Beijing imposed a sweeping new national security law on Hong Kong in July of last year, he felt an urgency to leave. Within two months of making the British National Overseas visa available in January, the British government received 34,000 applications. It estimates that about 300,000 people could take up the offer within five years; others say the figure could wind up being closer to 500,000. For many new arrivals like Chan, who is still living in a rented room and finding his bearings, the transition has not been easy. Although Britain boasts a well-established Chinese community, many of the Hong Kongers who have immigrated in recent months have found it difficult to land a job and make connections, especially in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. They miss—or even fear for—loved ones left behind, and they sometimes feel the sting of racism here in the land that ruled Hong Kong for 156 years as part of its globe-straddling empire.
Lebanon gets a new government after 13 months of collapse (Washington Post) Lebanon finally got a new government Friday, after 13 months of tortuous negotiations that left the country leaderless and paralyzed during the worst economic and financial collapse in its history. The formation of the new cabinet, headed by billionaire tycoon Najib Mikati and seemingly supported by almost all factions, means the country will be able to get down to the business of steering its way out of the crisis, which has wiped billions of dollars from the banking system and impoverished millions. Mikati, the new prime minister and one of the country’s wealthiest men, seemed to fight back tears as he delivered his inaugural speech, describing the problems of parents who cannot afford to feed their children, send them to school or find medicine to treat them when they are sick. But given the country’s kleptocratic system of government, there are few reasons to believe that Mikati’s administration will be capable of undertaking the radical reforms that are essential if Lebanon is to climb out of its depression, analysts say.
