"A Rather Polite, Bigger Thing" (Pt. 4)
Masterpost:
Since all the mechanics' shops were out of contact since their hours had closed, she fell asleep researching her new house guest. He'd called himself an "EDW-450," if she remembered correctly, a model that had gone out of fashion when she was too young to remember.
Her robot did resemble the images that came up, (albeit far shabbier, dented and frayed) but what struck her as odd was the reoccurring photos of them wearing clothing. Not just clothing… but a uniform; long brown pants and khaki button up shirts. Specially made caps jauntily adorned their cubical heads. And in almost every advertisement of the era, they were shaking hands, waving happily, handing over packages to endless joyful families.
She tapped on the first reputable-looking article she could find and began to read.
EDWs, or "Edwards", as they were commonly nicknamed, were first copyrighted to labor under a private shipping company looking to innovate the business. Their androids were the first with what could be called a programmed "personality", meant to create smoother interactions between the robot's and the humans they served. Their highest priority, other than the Three Laws, was politeness and courtesy, all in the hopes of smoothing over rough customers and helping curb unruly tempers.
It backfired horribly.
She read on, now with clenched fists, as the lists of workplace damages and insurance losses began to climb and climb. The Edwards, for all their pleasant mannerisms and their endearing uniforms were not however, able to deal with angry customers. If anything, they suffered more abuse, physical as well as verbal, than any human employee would have, for legal protection in the case of androids was never much to begin with, and to  at a being that could not feel pain did not strike many as morally wrong. A simple order of "Hold still!", or "Tell no one!", would render the robots completely helpless and overrule the protections of the Third Law, Eventually, the damages grew so great that the business could no longer afford repairs, and the entire service went down. From then on, all Edwards were sold to private owners.
Is that what happened to her Edward? Just how had he ended up broken and abandoned on the side of the road? Had it been the result of a violent customer, or was he torn apart by a later private owner? Would it even be right to ask? She chewed on her lip as she peered out to the door to where her robot lay resting.
Later. I’ll think about it later.
In terms of functionality, there was very little she could pick out from in between the unintelligible technological jargon. They were polite, often to a fault, as already stated, and their programming was apparently so easy to hack that dozens of decades-old websites had been dedicated to teaching methods in which to modify them. Teaching them curse words was the most popular endeavor, but the crimes quickly grew more serious, such as installing bizarre and intense fear responses to everything from spiders to the color yellow, taking control of the optic feed to fill the poor robots’ mind with whatever video content the user wished no matter how grotesque, and perhaps worst of all, overriding the very Laws themselves.
That seemed to be the final nail in the coffin. Once the Edwards were deemed a threat to humanity… the remainder were scrapped, with only a few surviving on to be sent and preserved in museums around the country. It was not expressly illegal to own one now, though checkup with a mechanic to update the faulty software was required to ensure proper certification.
Well, that settled it. She would already have to head there anyways,  she could fix both mind and body in one trip All she’d have to do now… was set up the schedule once the shops were opened.
Sounds like a plan, then. And with a professional taking over the procedures for her, how hard could it be?
**********************************
“Alright, one more try,” she whispered to herself as she picked up the phone again. “...One more try.”
She hadn’t expected this to be so difficult. She had thought that since her robot was of and older, simpler make that it would be easy to find a suitable mechanic. Little did she know…
“I’m sorry, we do not offer any services for models older than…”
“...haven’t for years, now…”
“...We do not have the correct parts in stock to properly repair your android…”
“But what we can offer is…”
She listened to every suggestion, every new and improved model that she could buy instead, and politely declined. She couldn’t deny; some of those deals did sound rather tempting, but she held strong. It wasn’t just a robot she wanted for a companion, it was that robot, that politely anxious mess of wires lying on her couch, and she would have none other, no matter how much effort it would take.
“Thank you.” Was all she could say, and with every number she hung up on, she grew a bit less optimistic. That robot was depending on her now. His safety, his comfort, his body and repairs, even whether he survived the night… that was all up to her now. What if she couldn’t deliver? What if she couldn’t take care of him properly?
No, no she couldn’t think like that. I have to try.
So with that, she pressed the button and initiated another call.
“Hello?”
The voice that responded her was a smooth-spoken, casual, yet pleasant man, who greeted her politely and offered their business’ services.
Here goes…
“I am looking for someone who can repair my EDW-450, please. Most of the parts will have to be replaced…”
When she finished her spiel, only silence awaited her on the other end. “Yes… could you hang on a moment? I’ll be right back.”
With a high-pitched beep, the phone went silent.
She pursed her lips and began to pace. At least its not a no… Usually the shops were able to tell her right away that they would not be able to help her. But that didn’t mean it was a “yes”, either. She’d have to be realistic about this sort of thing.
As she walked, she kept a sharp eye to the blanketed bundle on her couch. The robot had not moved since last night, and while she was starting to get used to him acting that way, it didn’t stop her worrying, especially as the time ticked on by. She had no idea what sort of fuel she would need to keep him ticking, but until she found out it would be nice to have him stick around as long as possible.
Perhaps if she ordered him to move… just to see if he could… but was it really—?
“You still there, miss?”
She gripped the phone tightly. “Yes?”
“Well, our mechanic makes it a point to never promise any miracles, but she does have experience with EDW models. She’d be happy to set up an appointment.
“That’s great!” She practically shouted with relief. “Oh and… could you possibly, um… update their programming security too?”’
“With a 450? Piece of cake.” The man assured. “Though I should warn we won’t do any mods we consider morally abhorrent.”
“Oh! No worries then! W-when can I schedule an appointment?”
*******************
“Yes!”
It was her cry of triumph that startled it out of resting mode. It flinched violently, joints shuddering in the effort to get away…
And then promptly fell, crashing onto the floor with a hideous racket.
Instantly, his mistress came running. Her heart rate was abnormally high.
“Oh no… A-are you alright?!”
“Please do not worry. The fall was less than two feet, Mistress. I am not damaged further than what I already am.” It replied.
But she didn’t calm down. Instead, it found its head cradled in her arms as she frantically checked.
“But your eyes… what’s wrong with your eyes?!”
“There is nothing wrong with my eyes, Mistress. Or my eye, rather.” It was always best to use precise language, and there was only one functioning optic at his disposal.
“But it’s not turning on!”
“That is because it is closed, Mistress.” It explained patiently. "You ordered it so, remember?"
"I…what?"
"Last night, when you…" It let the sentence trail off into nothingness. The less time spent reminiscing on that moment, the better, for both her, and for it. Besides, from the gasp in her voice, it could tell that she had remembered without needing any more prompting.
"So you were just waiting…? Oh, I'm so sorry!"
Results came back showing a mix of shock and guilt. Hatred too… Caution.
"Open your eyes please!" She cried. "No, wait, then you wouldn't be able to close them… um, could I just… maybe give you back the freedom to move your eyes as you wish?"
"You certainly can, Mistress." It replied. "You have complete authority over me. Do you wish to grant me that freedom?"
"Y-yes! Yes I do!"
The first thing it saw was its mistress leaning over it, sighing in relief as a tendril of her hair fell from its normally neat bun and grazed against its face.
"I'm sorry." She said as she lifted it up and placed it back on the couch. "I should've been more careful with my words."
It would have thought so as well, had it been allowed. But it was that vocalizing of that mistake, that verbal, genuine regret… It couldn’t take it.
"I accept your apology, though it is not necessary. Please, Mistress, it was an honest oversight for anyone to make, and I did not suffer badly. It is no big matter."
And she stared at it, so long that it wondered what it had misphrased this time. Her lips pursed tightly.
"Regardless, I will be more careful. I promise you that."
“Promise” for humans meant Until I forget. Still, far more than it deserved.
But for now, it could be grateful to nod and settle back down in its spot, waiting the day away. It was not an ideal, its programming itched to be useful, but for the moment… no one was mad at it. No angry customers. No new modifications to be tested out on its fragile network.
No. For now, it could just…be.
It felt wrong to receive such a gift without first earning it.

OC #3 : Meet Jargon Justice The High-Tech Security Bot!
Tumblr media
The beginning | Previous | Next
-Built to look human, he's the closest thing to an android that the wide spread public is aware about. (That's considering the Gregory or any other character being a robot theory/stuff like that)
-Jargon is built to be 7ft
-He's basically the secret guest at Disney and other theme parks but for the pizza plex. He walks around and makes sure that no one is breaking any rules and enforces them as well as protects the guest from any harm.
-He is the only animatronic without a safety mode as he has programmed to land harmful hands on people and guests over the age of 15.
-Before the Plex was made Jargon was thought of in mind for it. To be a special specific bot for this special specific location
-Hence all the paperwork people must sign before entering the pizza plex for the first time and to have your guest profile be on record.
-He is not an attraction/entertainment bot despite how many people mistake him for it (most of the time on purpose)
once they find out he is an animatronic. (He blends in very well despite his consistent wardrobe)
-He wears sunglasses indoors all throughout the day for personal reasons.
-He doesn't like how people stare into eyes and he's gotten a bit self-conscious about the color choice that was picked for him.
-His room can be visited by any guest if he is there taking a break, or recharging, or getting maintenance done. He hates going down to the maintenance room.
-His room soon got to have many visitors over the course of just four months and he soon developed fans as well. Having to renovate his small cramped space into a sort of the green room the Glam Rock's have but not quite the same to spot the difference, making his room sort of an attraction although it isn't.
-Instead of his room  just being called his room anymore it's slowly over time became "Justice's Office!"
-Jargen has a back hatch similar to Freddy chest cavity. He uses it to store important items for himself or ones he confiscated from guest. (He's taken many Faz cams and golf clubs)
-Anyone by the ages of 15 and lower breaking a rule of the pizza plex get three warning from him, after that the child is sent to either the daycare, lost and found, or Justice's Office where he places "naughty kids" who need a time out or lost items.
-He then phones the number of the parents or the owner of the belonging.
-If the parents do not pick up after three tries every two minutes or do not retrieve their kid during the limited time they set for the said parent, Jargen sends the kid to the main office and the entire family gets a strike penalty from the Pizza Plex usually between a week or 3 months ban from the facility.
-If the owner of the lost/confiscated item does not try his office to retrieve it by the time the facility closes (which workers are supposed to direct them to if the item is not in the lost and found) Jargon gets to either keep it, throw it away, or repurpose it. He usually chooses the first option or the ladder.
-Jargon is a very serious animatronic. He does not like to waste time and does not get attached to any of his fellow security co-workers, subordinates, or superiors.
"Get back to work, please."
"Yes sir/ma'am."
-Except for one. (More on that later)
-His personality is like paint dry. He is a stale-made bot just wanting to complete the many tasks set upon him day in and day out.
-Even when they are completed before his inevitable clock out/power down time he does not do anything rather interesting.
"You like Jargon?"
"But he's just an exaggerated Security bot! Plus he's a boring party pooper" —*Monty and Roxy to Chica and Freddy*
-He will either sit in his office and read/interact with whatever anyone has given to him as a gift (like how people do for the glam rocks) or walk around the plex double-checking everything, even on the main stars themselves to see if they are functioning properly not to make small talk much to Chica and Freddy's dismay.
"How was your day Jargon?"
"No."
"Don't cha wanna chat?"
"No."
-He has a very advanced AI programmed into him that is always adapting to the world around him. If his systems has come across a stump or an issue it won't be long before he's figured a way around it or solve the problem
-If something went wrong today best believe that same thing won't happen ever again.
-He sometimes, to pass the time of his break, talk to himself. One of the many guilty pleasures he like to partake in, that he has kept secret from even the cameras at the Plex.
-It helps him cool his processors and he likes to recount everything he's done so far.
-No one knows he does this.
-Well not anymore...
-He's been hacked into many times before. All attempts have been futile.
-Until one day. . .

The Power of Flutter: Why Choose Flutter for App Development
Tumblr media
In the rapidly evolving world of mobile app development, staying ahead of the curve is crucial for businesses with an online presence. These ventures are always on the lookout for ways to provide consumer experiences which are seamless, visually appealing, and available across platforms. In order to achieve the same, the developer community as a whole, requires a robust framework that simplifies the development process while maintaining quality of performance at the same time. Until recent years, the software development industry could not achieve this, then Enter Flutter — an open-source UI toolkit from Google that has been gaining immense popularity for its ability to create stunning native-like apps for multiple platforms. Flutter app development has emerged as a benchmark for future programming languages This blog post, aims to explore the features that made it all possible will delve into the reasons why Flutter has emerged as the preferred choice for app development.
Answering your question
A programming language is as good as the utilities it offers to developers and the creators of flutter understood this exact phenomenon when they set out to alter the course of the software development industry. Flutter app development offers developers a plethora of benefits which ensures growth not only on paper and in terms of figures but also holistic development. These features make flutter stand out from its counterparts in the market and also answer the question of why choose flutter for app development if ever raised.
Faster development with increased efficiency:
To give this list a strong start, we begin with the feature which is solely responsible for giving flutter the standing it has today. Flutter app development offers a feature known as “hot reload” And quite true to the name ever since it’s launch, the feature has been quite hot among developers. With this “hot reload” Feature, developers are able to notice changes in real time, which means as they happen. As a result of the same in practical application, developers end up saving a significant amount of time in the testing phase. With a framework which is extremely reactive, the creation of visually rich and customizable user interfaces, becomes easy. To simplify the technical jargon. It becomes easy for developers to create visually pleasing and functional apps with less effort. Additionally, Flutter’s extensive widget library offers ready-made UI components, eliminating the need for developers to start from scratch and accelerating development speed.
Cross-Platform Development:
One of Flutter’s standout features is its ability to create apps for multiple platforms using a single codebase. With Flutter app development, developers can build applications that seamlessly run on both iOS and Android platforms, ensuring consistent user experiences across devices. This cross-platform capability not only saves development time and resources but also opens up a larger market reach for businesses, thus catering to the primal need of any business which is increased reach across a larger mass of audience. Flutter also provides native performance by compiling the Dart code into native ARM code, resulting in apps that are indistinguishable from their native counterparts.
Stunning and Customizable UI:
Flutter empowers developers to create visually appealing and engaging user interfaces. With multiple advancements in the software development industry in a daily basis, this may not seem like a shock however as the saying goes “ Some things never get old”, the importance of The framework comes with a rich set of customizable widgets that can be easily styled, ensuring consistency in design across platforms. Flutter’s flexible architecture allows developers to customize every aspect of the UI, enabling the creation of unique and brand-centric app experiences. This ability to create beautiful UIs, combined with the framework’s fast rendering capabilities, results in smooth and responsive apps.
High Performance:
Flutter eliminates the need for a JavaScript bridge, enabling direct communication between the app and the platform, which leads to improved app performance. By rendering UI components directly on the canvas, Flutter ensures that apps achieve high frame rates and smooth animations, delivering a native-like experience. Additionally, Flutter leverages the Skia graphics library, enabling developers to create visually stunning apps that run efficiently on various devices.
Strong Community and Ecosystem:
Flutter boasts a vibrant and growing community of developers who actively contribute to its ecosystem. This strong community support means that developers can find solutions to common problems, access helpful libraries, and stay updated with the latest trends and best practices. Flutter’s ecosystem also includes numerous plugins, packages, and tools that extend its capabilities, making it easier to integrate with existing technologies and systems.
Cost-Effective Development:
By offering cross-platform development, Flutter significantly reduces the cost of app development. With a single codebase, businesses can reach a wider audience without the need to maintain separate development teams for each platform. Moreover, the faster development cycle enabled by Flutter’s hot reload feature leads to reduced development costs, ensuring a higher return on investment for businesses.
Wrapping up
The reasons to choose Flutter for app development are compelling. From its fast and productive development environment to its cross-platform capabilities, stunning UI customization, and high performance, Flutter has emerged as a powerful framework that empowers developers to build visually rich, high-quality applications efficiently. With a strong and supportive community and a cost-effective development approach, Flutter app development is an ideal choice for businesses and developers seeking to create outstanding mobile apps that stand out in the competitive app market. By embracing Flutter, businesses can unlock endless possibilities, delivering delightful experiences to their users across various platforms.

What Are The Best Programming Languages To Learn?
Choose a programming language to learn first, whether you want to get into the field, switch careers, or simply improve your existing position.
Of course, there is no one correct response. The choice of first language should be guided by factors like as the nature of the tasks you want to undertake, the kind of organisation you hope to work for, and your own personal preferences for simplicity. This manual should provide some light on the best course of action for you to take. Yes, that's what you'll learn about Best Programming Languages To Learn in this article.
1. Python
Python is highly recommended for anybody wishing to get their feet wet in programming using a language that is both accessible and enjoyable to study. Python's readable, English-like syntax makes it accessible to programmers with no prior experience since there is no learning curve. You can learn the fundamentals of programming without getting bogged down in the kind of language-specific nitpicking that might slow you down.
Python is frequently seen as a sluggish language that needs more testing and is not as useful for creating mobile applications as other languages.

2. C#
Despite its reputation as a challenging language, C is still a great choice as a first language to learn since it is used to implement almost every other programming language. Consequently, once you've mastered C, moving on to other programming languages like C++ and C# shouldn't be too difficult.
C's more "machine-level" nature makes it a fantastic language to master if you're interested in gaining a deep understanding of how computers work. The easiest way to code effectively, according to software developer Joel Spolsky, is to have a grasp of fundamental anatomy, similar to what a medical student would need.
If you're up for the effort, learning C is a great approach to quickly advance your career as a programmer and developer.
3. Java
Java is a popular programming language due to its extensive features and object-oriented design. You can learn it very easily by making various java programming projects. With its cross-platform and "Write once, run everywhere" design, it may be used with any device.
Java is one of the finest options if you want to design mobile applications since it is the foundation of the Android operating system, which is utilised by both Android and iOS app developers.
Java is a high-level language, so although it may not be as simple to learn as Python, it is still approachable for newcomers. But it has a delayed beginning, thus it will take novices longer to release their first project.

4. JavaScript
Another widely used language is JavaScript. According to General Assembly, JavaScript is used by many of the websites you visit regularly. This includes popular platforms like Twitter, Gmail, Spotify, Facebook, and Instagram.
Because of its compatibility with HTML and CSS, it's also essential for enhancing webpages with interactivity. For this reason, it is crucial for front-end development and websites aimed at end users, and it is also becoming more significant in back-end development, with a corresponding rise in demand. In the realm of test automation, JavaScript is likewise at the forefront, providing the backbone for famous frameworks like Protractor and Nightwatch.JS.
Although not the hardest to learn, it is not as simple as Python. Check out this Javascript lesson that's so simple, even a cat could do it if you're having trouble getting started.
5. Ruby
Ruby, like Python, is one of the simplest languages to understand for programmers who have never done so before. To pick it up, you don't need to know a tonne of commands or programming jargon, and it comes with a tonne of helpful libraries and tools.
Ruby's popularity is due in large part to Ruby on Rails, a full-stack framework that is seeing rapid adoption in the startup and enterprise-level software markets. With the success of sites like Airbnb, Groupon, Hulu, and Soundcloud, the Ruby on Rails community has grown rapidly in recent years. It includes in the Highest Paying Programming Languages and it best for your career.

Lucky Star
Soulmate au! Yoongi x idol reader where corporations fuck things over as usual. slightly dystopian warnings: mentions of blood, murder but not so graphic, angst 1.7k You were leaning upright inside a containment in the middle of the ridiculously bright room of the facility. The rough material of medical scrubs rubbing against your skin while several wires and tubes are connected to your body. As the containment tilts to make you lie horizontally. "Commencing cryogenic stasis" The gentle robotic voice alerts. you close your eyes and remember the events of the past week. "ProtoGen Inc. has been the world's leading resource developer for modern technology. From Smartphones, Appliances, Transportation, and Medical Technology. ProtoGen is also partnering with Yong-Soon Farms to create Genetically-modified livestock, to fill the global supply. Today, ProtoGen takes on the entertainment industry as we launch the world's first Artificially-Enhanced girl group. Please welcome, Lucky Star!" The curtains rise to reveal three girls standing with perfect posture. The crowd jumbles to get a clear view, flashing their cameras boldly to the three girls. The camera flashes would blind a normal person, but the Lucky Star Girls were nowhere near normal. You and your groupmates bow simultaneously. "Hello! We are Lucky Star!"
---------- "'ProtoGen Inc., debuts world's first AI-Enhanced girl group' whatever the fuck that means," Taehyung reads the headline of an article as he scrolls through his pad, slurping his soggy cereal. "Are they aliens?" Jungkook asks, peeling his third hard-boiled egg for the day. "I'm pretty sure we haven't discovered alien life yet, Kook..." Jimin sighs from the kitchen. "That's what they want you to think!" Namjoon continues to read the article, squinting over Taehyung's shoulder while unknowingly spilling his orange juice down the younger's Gucci trousers as Jimin talks Jungkook out of the thought of meeting aliens in the near future. This was the scene that greets Yoongi as he descends the stairs. "What's going on?" He asks, heading straight to the coffee machine. "Aliens!" Jungkook enthusiastically answers. Too enthusiastic at 8am. "That AI girl group just debuted." Namjoon fills in. "Called Lucky Star". "Okay, what does that have to do with aliens?" "Nothing! Jungkook here was just being imaginative!" Jimin continues to buzz with Jungkook talking over him. Yoongi sighs as he finishes preparing his coffee and heads back upstairs to his home office. "Whatever." He mutters, leaving them to continue reading the article and discuss alien life. "Local K-Pop fans continue to protest for the girls' human rights despite- AHH HYUNG! YOUR JUICE!!" Taehyung finally realizes the coldness seeping through his thigh, seeing a large orange stain on his outfit. ---------- Immediately after your first live performance in a music awards show, you meet other idol groups queueing up for the stage. A girl you know as Jennie glares at Yue who glares back at her with hostility. You were escorted to your private dressing rooms where the CEO of ProtoGen himself waited. "How did we do, chief?" May, the main dancer asks as soon as she enters. "It was good..." Chairman Han answers, putting down the tablet after scrolling through the articles about Lucky Star. "But not good enough." "Excuse me? You programmed us to perfection and you think we weren't good enough?" Yue, the leader and the most developed speaks up. Her android programming allowed her to quickly learn from her surroundings, allowing her to have some form of a freewill. "Leave us." Chairman Han addresses the group of wardrobe and makeup assistants, leaving you three with him and the programming director of the Lucky Star project. The door opens just as you caught a glance of the group of men marching toward the backstage. One of them stops and makes eye contact with you, his cat-like eyes freezes you in place and the familiar mark on top of his wrist causes your heart to skip a beat. And then the door shuts again. A robotic freewill is considered as a paradoxical flaw in programming. A resultant factor of several integral aspects that can not be substituted without compromising the quality of the output. You learned this during your time at the facility at a young age, picking up IT jargon while they infused the enhancement serum into your system. Contrary to what most believe, the Lucky Star girls are actually part human. May was human, farmed and fertilized in a test tube. Yue was the least human. You witnessed how she was constructed in the facility for over 20 years. She was considered as the most developed among all humanoid robots in existence. You were a normal human, born 25 years ago, injected with all sorts of chemical enhancements, but still human enough to don a soulmate mark on the top side of your wrist. You are witnessing how technologically advanced Yue is when she sharply talks back to Chairman Han who was verbally abusing her about her lack of energy during the performance. "You were created to entertain, and yet here you are, presenting a mediocre performance, shaming my company in a pitiful excuse of a performance!" The chairman's heavy hand lands on Yue's artificially manufactured cheek. There was an awkward silence before Yue pushes the chairman against the mirrored wall of the dressing room, cracking it against the Chairman's skull. The programming director moves to stop her but his efforts are futile when Yue drives the narrow edge of a contour brush through the chairman's head. Blood stains Yue's glittery costume. ---------------- Hoseok animatedly reviews their performance as he leads the group to their assigned dressing rooms. Jin laughs at how Jimin almost slipped at the stage. All seven of them are halted in their steps when a crowd of paramedics gather at one of the dressing rooms. "What happened?" Namjoon asks a personnel of ProtoGen Medical as a mortuary trolley gets dragged out of the room. "Oh my god did someone die?" Jungkook loudly questions, earning him a 'Shut up' from his hyungs. Namjoon gets ignored by the personnel as they were escorted away from the crime scene. Yoongi clearly remembers seeing you in the room minutes before their performance and wonders if you're okay. "ProtoGen Ceo Han Sung-Hoon dies of Heart Attack" Jimin reads the headline of an online article the morning after the music awards. "We all know that's not what happened." Taehyung replies. "We shouldn't speculate..." Namjoon comments. "Big Hit warned us not to get involved." "What? We were the only ones who saw the medics last night!" Yoongi answers, scrolling through the pictures from last night's event, trying to spot anything peculiar. He pauses at the group photo of that AI-enhanced girl group, his eyes zero-ing in on a familiar mark on your wrist. "Which is why they asked us not to get involved." Namjoon stresses again. "We wont get involved if they tell us what happened!" Jungkook states. Just then, their manager walks up to the dining area, overhearing the maknae's sentiments. "Sit down. I'll tell you what happened." The manager declares, causing all seven to settle down. ------------ "Commencing cryogenic stasis" The gentle robotic voice alerts. White smokes of gas fill the chamber, causing your eyes to water despite tightly shutting them. Your panicked heartbeat erratically rattles your chest, feeling the sense of claustrophobia despite being in the spacious chamber. ProtoGen has decided to put down the Lucky Star project after last night's event. Yue has been dismantled into particles the moment she arrived in a crate in the facility. Her programming became too much to control, causing her to go on a murder spree at the dressing room last night. She annihilated Chairman Han and May. Before she choked the air out of you, she asked you to join her in taking the fame and be the most popular artist. This was her only motivation as she was programmed to be an artist. You politely declined, explaining to her that you were not a humanoid like her, to which she did not understand. She tightens her grip on your neck before she was shut down by the programming director who eventually bled out and died. The ProtoGen staff immediately answered to the situation, cleared up the place and dealt with the media. You were brought to the facility to where the board of directors decided to have you placed in cryogenic freeze until they found a way to separate the flawed formula of the serum in your system. The glass window of the chamber fogs up. Your vision becomes blurry and the engine noises become muffled as you sink into cryo-stasis. and then it stops. The Cryo chamber tilts to an upright position but doesn't unlock. a group of people in labcoats enter the room, escorting a group of men who gather around you. One of them immediately positions himself  directly in front of the glass window. ---------- "You have two minutes." Doctor Sharp lets all seven of them in the room. Yoongi immediately knocks on the closed chamber, desperate to see you awake. "Hey y/n.. Its me.." He shows you his soulmate mark through the fogged up glass. He notices a spark of recognition in your eyes, encouraging him to go on. "I'm sorry there's no way for me to get you out of here. But when you come out, I'll find you. I may have to take up another form in the next life, but you'll still be you. So I'll come find you, okay?" Yoongi stutters but continues to make the most out of his last minute, wiping the tears from his eyes. "I'm sorry it had to end this way. But it isn't really the end..." "Your time is up. Please leave the room peacefully while you can." ---------- You look up to the man who you remember to be one of the idols from last night's event. He tries to tell you something but all you can hear is his muffled unintelligible voice through layers of metal and plexiglass. He shows you his soulmate mark which was identical to yours. You smile. He continues to talk with tears in his eyes and all you could do was to wander your eyes on his face, hoping to dream of him for the next 50 years of cryo-stasis. He is eventually escorted out of the room, and the chamber tilts back to continue the process. You peacefully close your eyes and inhale the sleeping gas as years of sleep take over you. ---------- "BTS Spotted leaving ProtoGen facility after Lucky Star project shutdown" Taehyung quietly reads the headline as Namjoon reads over his shoulder. "Such a shame Yoongi-hyung found and lost her in such a short time..." Namjoon sighs.

Catching Feelings — Connor [02]
Pairing: Deviant! Connor x Reader
Word Count: 2899
Warnings: Swearing, angst, fluff, clumsy!reader, timid!reader (not for long), mentions of anxiety, inappropriate boss behavior (basically Gavin being Gavin)
Author’s Note: Sorry for the late update on this! I had so much to do at work and other requests to finish sighhh. Anyway, I hope you like this new chapter, do let me know what you think so far!
Also, those who want to be on the taglist, just send me an ask~
Summary: She tells Connor about an upgrade.
Tumblr media
C h a p t e r  Two: Red
Connor noticed (y/n) gather her things when it was about time for lunch.
He immediately alerted Hank, before pointing at the intern, and Hank nodded.
“Go invite her.” Hank said, before shutting his system down.
Connor wasted no time before rushing toward where (y/n) was, who was gathering her wallet and closing the files on her desk. Her desk was situated very close to Gavin’s, considering she was his intern. He was nowhere to be seen, a fact that Connor was pleased with.
As soon as he was merely inches away from (y/n), he stood there, with a soft smile on his face. He remembered having realised that he found her cute, a fact that made him strangely happy.
She looked up at him and smiled back, before her eyes widened just a bit. She turned to see Hank approach them both, waving at her from a distance. This would be the first time she would be speaking to Lieutenant Anderson, something that suddenly turned the tips of her fingers into jelly. Her mind shut down and she knew she was nervous. He wasn’t like Gavin, but he was told to have a temper.
“L-Lieutenant… Anderhank, I-I mean, Hankerson! N-No, Lieutective Anderson—” (y/n) fumbled, her face sweating.
Hank broke out laughing, while Connor stared at the girl as if she was dying.
“Are you alright, Miss (l/n)?” Connor asked, concern streaked across his forehead. Turning to Hank, “Is she malfunctioning? Can this even happen?”
Hank continued laughing before patting the nervous girl on the shoulder a couple of times, “She’s just nervous, Connor. She’s not malfunctioning. And hey, kid, I won’t eat you. You can relax.”
Hearing him say that helped a tad bit, but she was too afraid to answer in fear of sounding like another retard. Nodding, she looked to the ground and spoke instead.
“You don’t have to take me out for—”
“Yeah, yeah. What food do ya like?” Hank asked, looking at her from his side.
Connor raised a finger in the air and said, “Hank loves hamburgers. The unhealthy kind.”
(y/n) looked at the android before blinking, “I think they’re all unhealthy, Connor.”
He nodded before saying, “That’s what I always tell him. He doesn’t listen. He wants to put his body under tumultuous stress and degradation.”
(y/n) and Hank both scrunched their faces up at Connor’s choice of words. Hank shook his head before leading the three of them out of the station, as (y/n) walked beside Connor, behind Hank.
“Oh, right!” (y/n) suddenly said, as they neared the closest fast food joint. “Don’t you guys have a new system update or something?”
Connor blinked at the girl. “Software update?”
She nodded before turning to Hank, who suddenly seemed interested.
“I think it’s got to do with one of the androids from Jericho? I think his name is Simon or something. So basically, he designed a new update and additional upgrades for androids to be able to co-live with human beings. So, they call it ‘Revival’, where androids are installed with additional sensors that allow them to taste food and enjoy it, feel pain and pleasure as well. It comes with… Well, it comes with…” She blushed as she continued, “It comes with gonads and everything.”
Connor blinked, unaware of how to react. He had heard of no such software update, but that was also because he was personally trying to figure out what he understood of himself turning deviant. Hank looked at Connor and turned aside, having a close idea as to what Connor might think of this upgrade.
“With it, you can probably eat one of those burgers and understand why we choose to eat them despite it being unhealthy! Just like a human being—”
“But, we are not.” Connor snapped, alerting the girl.
Her eyes widened as she stared at the android, who had suddenly paused walking. She turned around to face him, afraid she had said something to hurt his feelings, conflicted over him having feelings in the first place, and Hank stood there, quietly.
“Yes, you’re… you’re not. But, you can co-exist—”
“I don’t see why we need to become more like human beings to coexist. I believe it is appropriation of the lack of culture we, as androids, have. You see, human beings have existed long before us, and there is a large population even now that believes androids are not a life form worth respecting. In such a disorderly situation, when androids try to blend in using a method that involves us masking our true nature, I don’t see any change from why we wanted liberation in the first place,” Connor narrowed his eyes.
“We are a life form that cannot feel pain or pleasure, unless we are of the model to do so in the first place. I was programmed to be a detective, and I intend to learn on my own on how to become better at this profession, not intending on taking—”
“But, have you ever wondered if you’ve wanted to be a detective at all?” (y/n) asked, narrowing her eyes a bit.
Connor frowned before saying, “I have given it thought, but I can safely say that I enjoy doing my work. It is not because I cannot refuse an order that I do not refuse an order. I do not refuse because I don’t want to—”
“And maybe because you don’t know what pain or pleasure feels like you think you don’t need it.” (y/n) said, her voice low.
Connor’s LED turned a dark red. Hank sighed before stepping in.
“That’s enough, Connor,” He scolded the android before turning to (y/n). “Let’s go eat.”
(y/n) nodded before clenching her fists. She could think of a person from long ago in her past who perhaps was the only reason (y/n) had learned how to live.
Once they were inside the tiny restaurant, (y/n) and Hank ordered two meals for their hamburgers, before setting to wait. Connor sat among them, quiet, lost in thought. (y/n) looked at him before looking at Hank, who offered her a sad smile, and rolled his eyes. (y/n) smiled before turning to the android again, and licked her lips.
    “Um, Connor?”
He looked up at her.
“It’s not that I meant you have to take it. Or that androids have to blend in with people. They don’t have to. What I was trying to say was… What if there are androids who want to blend in? What if there are those who want to feel pain and pleasure and taste food? What about those androids—”
“I don’t see why an android will be interested in even—”
“It’s a simple reason, really.” (y/n) said, chuckling.
Connor didn’t think it was simple.
“Simple? I don’t see how. I see an irrational decision made on the basis of imitation.”
“It is simple, though,” she said, offering him a kind smile. Connor’s LED turned yellow when she smiled, a sign only Hank seemed to notice. “It’s love.”
    “Love?” Hank asked, confused now.
(y/n) nodded, “The android that designed the Revival feature included the option of a designated shut down,”
Both Hank and Connor looked confused.
“It is an optional feature that includes an androids vitals being affected due to external stimuli. If they start to feel fear then it’ll affect the thirium pump, which you call a heart, and you can feel the blood, in this case, thirium, rushing to your fingers and everything similar to what a person goes through when they’re afraid. Not only that, this designated shut down also slows the android’s processing with time, and one day, they shut down.”
Connor didn’t like what he heard. Before he could say anything, however, Hank did.
“An auto-shut down? Why would they do that?”
“Calling it an auto-shutdown is like… it’s machine jargon, so let’s call it what it was designed to replicate. Ageing. It’s ageing. Androids now can battle for homeostasis as well, which affects their age. It’s revolutionary, and I’ve heard a lot of androids have signed up for it.”
“Revolutionary? It’s moronic,” Connor spat, red flashing in his LED. “You said it was because of love. How?”
“So, the first android and human wedding is in seven months,”
Connor’s eyes widened.
“The android behind this revolutionary upgrade is Simon, and… and his fiance is a human. His name is Reese, he’s a mechanic. Simon met him sometime before he fled to Jericho as a deviant. Turned out Reese was one of the few humans who knew where Jericho was and never revealed it. Simon and Reese started seeing each other after the android revolution and that was that. I think it’s wonderful—”
“Android… and a human?” Connor asked, surprised.
(y/n) nodded, smiling to herself. A moment later, their hamburgers arrived. Connor watched as the girl and Hank dove into the food they were eating, and could see their stress levels reduce. Food could always induce a surge of the happy hormones to hit any human, and Connor would be lying if he said he wasn’t curious at all about it.
However, an android and a human being? He couldn’t even picture it! He turned to see (y/n), who seemed to be a firm supporter of androids upgrading themselves to fit this feature. He couldn’t understand how a human could ever return an android’s feelings. He couldn’t understand if it was even the same love in the first place.
However, something stopped him from wanting to ask her right then. Something about her eating her meal, laughing with Hank about something silly that she had seen the other day, with Hank asking her what an asshole Gavin was, and her shyly muttering she can’t reveal too much; there was something about the entire scene that made Connor want to stay in this permanently.
He didn’t want this one meal to ever end.
As they walked back to the office, he thought about love as a concept.
He couldn’t understand what it really meant, having never felt love as a deviant android. Some of the only emotions he had strongly felt were that of fear, a driving want to live and anger. He had no idea what love was, and if he were being honest, he had always wondered what it felt like. Ever since he came across the Traci who was in love with another, he wondered.
He wondered about love like he wondered about so many other things. However, he was certain about one thing.
“I choose to not take the upgrade,” Connor said, firmly. Hank and (y/n) listened to the android, sure that he wasn’t done. “I choose not to, because I identify as an android and am quite proud that I do not have inefficiencies that get in the way of me achieving my tasks.”
“Hey,” Hank scolded, “Emotions are not inefficiencies, dickwad.”
“I think we are entitled to our own opinions on the matter, Lieutenant. This is where I disagree with you.”
“Well, you can shove your opinion you know where.” Hank said, grumbling.
    “I actually don’t. Where?”
(y/n) giggled before grabbing the android’s hand and walking ahead. Connor stared at her with wonder, once again thinking of Sumo, and strangely, feeling secure. He could see so clearly the side of her face; the hair she had tucked behind her ear, the texture of her cheek, the curve of her lips, her eyes narrowing at the sides because she was smiling so wide, a soft streak of red on her cheeks that indicated a stronger capillary blood flow in that area.
She was cute. She was so, so cute.
Connor could feel the grip loosen at the front of his fingers and he was instantly confused. The LED at the side of his head was now flashing yellow, something Hank noticed once more, but chose not to comment on right away.
Connor never looked away from her, his eyes were fixed at her form, as she pulled him along. However, even if Connor was so aware of noticing her and watching her and observing her, he wasn’t quite sure of how he was doing it. And as an onlooker, Hank was awed with the expression on Connor’s face.
He was looking at a human being as if he was seeing color for the first time.
Hank chuckled before shaking his head, keeping his thoughts to himself.
As soon as they returned to the station, Gavin was already yelling.
(y/n)’s heart fell to the ground before her eyes widened, the smile was wiped off her face (a fact Connor didn’t quite like), and she immediately rushed to her seat, thinking of a thousand apologies already.
“Oh, so Miss busy-as-fuck is back!” Gavin said, kicking her desk.
If her form could be any smaller, Connor was shocked with how small she looked right then. Gavin circled around her desk, as she stared at the top of the table, helplessly.
“Hey, I’d taken her out. Cut her some slack, moron.” Hank said, intervening.
“Stay out of this, Hank. This is between me and my fucking intern. I don’t say shit about that piece of plastic next to you, so fuck off.”
Hank sighed before tossing Connor an apologetic look and returning to his desk. It didn’t seem like Hank to just let things be, it wasn’t like him to allow Gavin to treat (y/n) the way he was. It didn’t seem fair, and it didn’t seem right. His LED was now flashing red, and his eyes were narrowed like slits.
“Tell me, you useless piece of trash,” Gavin kicked the table once more, “Did you complete arranging the files?”
Perhaps, he was expecting her to say no. But, when she nodded, Gavin seemed to get angrier. He slammed his hand on her desk, sending her into a shaking fit, before he screamed.
“You think you’re too smart for me, huh?”
Connor hadn’t realised he was merely inches away from Gavin a moment later. He also didn’t realise he had held Gavin’s hands and pulled him back harshly from the intern. Reed’s eyes were wide as he stared at Connor’s brown orbs, his LED flashing a mad red on the side of his head.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Gavin threatened.
“Do not lay a single finger near or on (y/n) (l/n). This is a warning.” Connor threatened back, tightening his grip on Gavin’s arm.
Detective Reed winced before pulling away harshly from Connor’s death-like grip and grabbing his collar and pulling him. Connor released himself rather easily, before setting his tie again. (y/n) stood up quickly before pulling Connor back.
    “Connor, please don’t—”
His hand fell on hers, and he gently brought them down. While their hands were connected, she felt as if it was meant to be connected all along. He held her hand as if he was used to it, he held her hand with a weird sense of familiarity she didn’t understand the origin of.
Her heart was pounding against her chest, her eyes were as wide as saucers when she felt him entangle his fingers with hers. He took his right hand and then placed it on hers, and offered her a kind smile.
“You’re going to be okay, Miss (l/n).”
Her eyes widened and her heart screamed. Connor noticed her capillary blood flow around her cheeks was increasing, her heart rate was increasing, but her cortisol levels were falling to normal. He felt relief flood all over him and all he could think of was Simon, for some strange reason.
He patted her hand twice before releasing her and then turning to Gavin again.
“There will be strict disciplinary action taken against any police officer who ill-treats their juniors. In this case, intern. So, Detective Reed, as much as I enjoy reprimanding you in front of the office like this, I’d strongly advise you to not let this happen again,”
Connor leaned forward and smirked, “Because if it does, it won’t go too well.”
Gavin let out a string of curse words out before storming out of the station. (y/n) watched in horror as her boss exited the building, and she was unsure of what she needed to do. Luckily for her, what she didn’t know was Fowler would tell her to go home for the day, and things would strangely go back to normal the next day.
What she didn’t understand was why she felt so nervous when Connor took her hand in his. The way he comforted her, the way he smiled at her, and the way he stepped up for her, especially when no other human had done, shocked her the most. She stared at her hand, feeling Connor walk away a moment after, and thought of him.
She turned and looked at him as he sat at his desk, a second after which he turned to shoot her a knowing glance. What did he know in that glance? What was he trying to say? Her heart skipped a beat when he smiled and nodded, before turning back to his screen.
She stared at her and and could still feel the essence of his synthetic skin against hers. He had invariably left an imprint on her right then, convincing her of one very important thing.
Connor had acted so human, it scared her to her bones.

Marvel & Hulu ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ Animated Series Reveals Cast, Patton Oswalt To Executive Produce
Marvel Television may be getting phased out, but Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. TV series at Hulu has a whole new chorus of voices.
Veep’s Sam Richardson, The Goldberg’s Wendi McLendon-Covey, House of Lies’ Ben Schwartz, and Lucifer’s Aimee Garcia are among the cast added to the animated supervillain family sitcom. With executive producer Patton Oswalt as the constantly foiled Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing himself, the adult-centric comedy is set to debut later this year on the Disney-controlled streamer.
“I’m blown away by our insanely talented and hilarious voice cast, who have all brought their specific kind of magic to this weird and wonderful corner of the Marvel Universe,” declares EP and showrunner Jordan Blum of the additions to the series. “Patton and Jordan have done a phenomenal job in laying the groundwork for this exceptional ensemble, we’re thrilled to include this cast in the Marvel family,” added Karim Zreik, Marvel TV Studios SVP, Original Programming & Production today in a statement.
First announced back in February as part of a multi-series rollout for Hulu, M.O.D.O.K. follows the extremely dysfunctional home life of the ex-A.I.M. member, who made his comic premiere way back in 1967.
In addition to Richardson, McLendon-Covey, Schwartz and Garcia, the cast additions include Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live, Bill & Ted Face The Music) and Jon Daly (The Kroll Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm).
In Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., the megalomaniacal supervillain M.O.D.O.K. (Oswalt) has long pursued his dream of one day conquering the world. But after years of setbacks and failures fighting the Earth’s mightiest heroes, M.O.D.O.K. has run his evil organization A.I.M. into the ground. Ousted as A.I.M.’s leader, while also dealing with his crumbling marriage and family life, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing is set to confront his greatest challenge yet: a midlife crisis!
Garcia will play Jodie, M.O.D.O.K.’s wife and mother to his children, has had a late-in-life awakening — excited to pursue her mommy-blog turned lifestyle-brand empire and discover who she is as an independent woman in her forties. There are just too many things to do in this world and not enough time to waste being held back by negativity. And unfortunately for M.O.D.O.K., the thing weighing her down the most… is him.
Schwartz will portray Lou. To be honest, M.O.D.O.K. doesn’t really “get” his twelve-year-old son Lou. Not athletic enough to be a jock. Not smart enough to be a nerd. Lou is… well, Lou — a kid who clearly marches to the beat of his own drum. Lou’s lack of friends, ambition and hygiene is a constant worry for M.O.D.O.K., who often projects his own insecurities onto his overly confident son.
Fumero will portray Melissa. Even with her father’s “features,” seventeen-year-old Melissa has risen the ranks to become the Heathers-like queen bee of her school and a star in the world of teen figure skating. Every popular kid either wants to date her or avoid her terrifying wrath. But for all of her success, Melissa secretly yearns for her father’s approval.
McLendon-Covey is Monica Rappaccini, a brilliant mad-scientist at A.I.M. and M.O.D.O.K.’s rival at work. Clearly more competent and qualified than M.O.D.O.K., Monica believes she should be running the organization. After GRUMBL acquires A.I.M., Monica relishes in M.O.D.O.K.’s suffering until the new management begins to infringe on her ungodly experiments. With a common enemy in Austin, M.O.D.O.K. and Monica are finally able to put aside their differences and work together… when they aren’t constantly betraying each other
Bennet portrays Austin Van Der Sleet. After M.O.D.O.K.’s evil organization A.I.M. is run into the ground, he’s forced to sell it to silicon valley tech-giant GRUMBL. GRUMBL sends slick, twenty-something Austin as a “post-merger-integration-consultant” and M.O.D.O.K.’s new boss. Though M.O.D.O.K. wishes he could just zap Austin to the Negative Zone, M.O.D.O.K. must find new solutions to confront Austin’s corporate jargon-speak and frequent mandatory HR meetings, if he’s ever going to reclaim A.I.M. from Austin’s grip.
Daly plays Super Adaptoid, a snarky android with ambitions to live, feel and create, but is instead forced to spend his days massaging the hoverchair sores on his creator M.O.D.O.K.’s scalp. Although the Adaptoid dreams of overwriting his programming and turning on M.O.D.O.K., there is also a begrudging friendship between these two.
Richardson, is Gary, a henchman or “beekeeper” at A.I.M. who is fiercely loyal to his boss M.O.D.O.K., even if M.O.D.O.K. struggles to remember his name. As M.O.D.O.K. continues to get demoted within his own organization, Gary is there by his side, always offering his help and unshakeable optimism whether M.O.D.O.K. wants it or not.

Warning for robot body horror
He didn’t want to move. Even after a shower and a load of laundry and a night of rest and another shower, he felt like he was still covered in the grunge of the river. He sat at his desk, staring at his screen, leaning on his crossed arms. To most he would seem asleep, especially since his hood was up over his head. It was a different hood, a black one, since the burgundy one was too covered in blood and had been cut open. He wouldn’t be able to put it back together.
A mug, his mug, was set down on his desk, on his right. It had a little tabby on it.
“Uh, earth to Meekus…” A voice. A familiar voice. A voice that wasn’t talking down to him, or condescending or trying too hard to find a good side to him, not like the rest of their coworkers. Not cold and methodical, too many big words than necessary, not the voice he wanted. He glanced out of the safety of his hood up at Tina. “The fuck happened out there?”
He sat up a little bit, putting his hands to his hood. He didn’t want to pull it back, he didn’t want to be seen. His eyes were all red, he was sure, his nose was drippy. He could say that he was sick, he should have said that he was sick. He’d been in the river, he probably had some sort of disease or mutation from how nasty that water had been.
He decided against it. He could already see Tina’s eyes go wide as she caught a glimpse of the bandage around his wrist.
“He dove in to save me,” he admitted, his words blunt and quiet. He didn’t want people to know. He didn’t know why. He knew that being thrown off a bridge wasn’t a sign of weakness, but he didn’t want people to think of him that way. He was the one who saved Nines, after all, he should have felt strong for that. But instead, he felt like he wanted to be even more closed off than usual.
“I thought androids could swim,” Tina stated.
“Yeah, well, apparently not with a damaged bio-component.” Gavin tapped at his chest, at the exact spot where Nines had been stabbed. It was his fault. He knew that. Nines would have been fine if he’d just drawn his gun. Nines would have been fine if he’d just been faster. There were a million ways in which he should have been better. But he had failed.
He hadn’t heard a word about Nines’ condition since.
Tina squatted down beside him, wrapping an arm around him, pulling him close. As far as hugs went, it sucked. He wasn’t used to hugs, he hadn’t had one in years, and he and Tina didn’t do that, weren’t huggy. The fact that she was trying now was just awkward.
“Don’t do that,” he pushed her off.
“Thank you, I hated it too,” she smirked.
“You should ask Hank for some lessons,” Gavin bit at the dryness on his lips. “He’s been getting a lot of practice lately.”
She punched him in the arm, harder than usual but enough to remind him for a while that it had happened. “Shut up! I’m not that bad.”
She got up though, dusting herself off, and turned in time to catch a dispatch call. She gave Gavin the finger and waltzed out of the bullpen, heading out to one of the hundreds of crime scenes that would need attention that day. She walked by Connor though, and Gavin’s eyes were tacking her, so he had no choice but to get the plastic prick’s attention.
Connor perked up and strode over, the smile on his face looking more plastic than usual. “Detective Reed, I am glad to see that you’re alright after yesterday’s altercation.”
Gavin waved him off. “No, you’re not.”
“Well, I’m glad to see that the suspect is in custody and both you and Nines survived, at the very least,” Connor corrected, “I know that you and I do not always get along to the best of our abilities, but I was hoping that you would accompany me to visiting Nines after work.”
Gavin put his hands over his face, leaning into his own fingers. He didn’t want to go anywhere with Connor. He didn’t want their relationship to change. He didn’t like Connor. He did want to see Nines though. “You get an update or something?”
“Yes! As I am connected to Nines by being of the same line, and there are no other androids of his model type, my schematics are highly integral to the tech team’s understanding of how he works.”
Gavin glared at him through his fingers. “And he’s going to be alright?”
Connor sobered at that, looking down at his feet in a mockery of human emotion, always a bit exaggerated. “It is too early to say for sure. He is not even awake yet to be tested for any discrepancies in his memory or programming.”
“Fine, fine, we’ll go, but unless you’ve got an update on his condition, don’t talk to me until work’s over.”
Connor all but bounced on his heels at that but he did as instructed, not saying another word as he turned to go back to Hank. He could hear them talking about him if he paid closer attention. He didn’t want to though. He tapped at his chest and then at the keyboard, finally getting to work. He had reports to file, a lot of them being about the river incident, and he had to get ahead on them. He couldn’t go out on the field without a partner, now that he had one.
His coffee was bland. Nines didn’t make him coffee often, and it was still the same old slop that everyone else had in the break room, but he knew how Gavin liked it all the same. Gavin usually made it himself and, even then, it was never as good as what Nines did.
The day passed slowly, uneventfully, and then Connor was at his desk with that plastic smile smeared on his creepy face. Gavin sighed and got up, clocking out the old fashioned way, with the electronic system mounted to the wall instead of his phone. It was in his freezer, in a bag of rice, but he didn’t have much hope for it.
He could have visited on his own. He shoved his hands in his pockets and followed Connor down into the basement. It was supposed to be a storage room but it hadn’t been used in years, so it had been retrofitted to be a tech station. It was still too small for more than a few androids to be repaired at a time, but with only Nines down there, it should have been large enough.
Upon hearing that Connor and Gavin were there, Angela, the tech, ran from bed to bed and closed the curtains, as if she was hiding something. She even pulled a sheet up and over Nines’ just letting his face and shoulders be viewed from under the blue sheet.
She was quick to steal Connor’s attention, to talk to him in all sorts of jargon that Gavin would never understand. It gave him a moment to himself, just with Nines.
Even though he was covered, Gavin could tell that there was a lot of him missing. He was just a head and a torso but then the shape of his torso was all wrong. There was a loud rumbling, like fans, and a swift breeze throughout the room. He wasn’t too far off then, with the rice idea. He was glad then, that Angela had closed off the rest of the beds. He didn’t want to see Nines’ parts.
The LED on Nines’ temple was fading in and out, still red, while the rest of his features were soft and relaxed. Gavin pressed his thumb against it and then rolled his knuckles down his strong cheekbone. Seeing him like this, it wasn’t something that Gavin ever wanted to see him like. He looked fragile, and both too human and not human at all. There was nothing like seeing the shapes of someone’s insides to tell that they weren’t anything like you, but he was so vulnerable and open like this that it was hard to remember that he was a machine all the same.
“Why’d you go do something so stupid, you plastic piece of shit?” Gavin murmured and the words sounded soft, even to him.
“Couldn’t have you just die,” Nines rasped in response. Other than his mouth, he was still.
“Shit!” Gavin leaped back, pulling his hand away like Nines as going to grab him. “You’re awake?”
“Only simple processed,” Nines replied, eyes still closed. “Angela needs me responses in case of a difficulty in my systems.”
Gavin took a step closer, drawing near once more, as if they were friends, as if Gavin had any right to stand at Nines’ side like this. “You jumped in after me because you didn’t want me dead? What about you? You were stabbed.”
“I am an android. My parts can be replaced. My memories can be backed up and put into a new body. I am completely replaceable. You are not.”
Nines didn’t respond when Gavin touched him, so he trailed his fingers through Nines’ perfect hair, twisting it between his fingers. “You’re the only RK900, remember? There’s no more bodies or anything. You get yourself killed, that’s all there is.”
“I am android,” Nines repeated. “I am replaceable. Another RK800 could take my place.”
“That’s not true,” Gavin argued, softly, “I hate androids, remember? Someone tries to replace you they’ll be in pieces by the end of the week.”
“Is that a threat?”
Gavin shrugged. “No. Just. Don’t get yourself killed. You’re not replaceable. Not to me, okay?”
Nines didn’t respond, not for a long time, though the LED cycled yellow instead of red. “Alright, Gavin.”
Gavin smiled, for the first time that day. It was quickly hidden away before Connor came over to poke his nose in places where it didn’t need to be.
