On May 20, 2009, almost five years ago now... Our town lost a lovely young girl in a terrible auto accident. She was just days away from her graduation from Central Catholic HS and a promising future. In the days that followed the accident, I began to realize that my own angel had decided that I should help this family, who I had never met, by making them "memory books". My angel was insisting that this happen... she would not take "no" for an answer. I cannot even begin to explain how it came to me to know what she wanted me to do, but it was exceptionally clear and I just knew. How do you negotiate or plea bargain with an angel? If you knew my angel, then you would know that you just don't... period. So I hesitantly made four "memory books" and packaged them with ribbons and love. Driving to this family's home, I was still being challenged by my rather insistent angel. I wanted to turn around and head for home. I could not do this. By now, her angelic voice had become very loud. Feeling nervous and anxious and way, way out of my comfort zone, I knocked on their door, thinking "This family is going to think that I am crazy".... heck, I thought I WAS crazy! What happened next was so amazing... they welcomed me and we instantly connected in a way only parents who have lost a child can. We now share an unbroken bond and friendship, some five years later. I am so grateful and blessed and surprised that I actually listened to the voice within and took that chance... The reason I share this story with you tonight is twofold... First, to remind you that those we have loved and lost never, ever leave us. They stay by our side and if we still ourselves, we can almost hear them. Listen with your heart... the messages are crystal clear. The second is, not to "blow my own horn", but to share with you how rewarding it can be to step outside your comfort zone to make a difference. It can be unnerving and scary, but if you expect nothing in return, it can be immeasurably rewarding and life changing. It seems as if we talk a lot about paying it forward, but most of us, although well intended, never grasp at the chance to do it. The ripple effect of kindness is unending and exceptionally moving... and, who knows, you just may make a new lifelong friend. This is my "sundae sermon"... ~ dle ~
