If you look up “fun,” it’ll take you right to this thing right here. Exceeding my high expectations, Tim Matheson is even more gorgeous, charming, intelligent, animated, accessible, and fabulous than I could’ve imagined. Don’t think I’ve ever had more fun at 11 in the morning.
Squeezing us in on a busy day of meetings, and a table read for Netflix’s #1 smash, Virgin River, which Tim both stars in, and oft directs, he was relaxed, gave us his full attention, energy, passion, and focus, and, what a treat it was after all these years of adoring him.
We jumped into Animal House, how it went down, how he got it, what almost was, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Peter Reigert, Karen Allen, Mark Metcalf, who, thanks to his extreme kindness, introduced me to Tim, making today possible.
We circled back through this Burbank boys’ start, My Three Sons, Leave it to Beaver, voicing Jonny Quest, the Western years, Bonanza, The Virginian, co-starring with Kurt Russell in The Quest, opposite Henry Fonda, and Lucille Ball in Yours, Mine and Ours, studying at every turn, including a year of Improv, leading to the big stretch, comedy and portraying the good bad boy, working with Landis and then Speilberg and again Belushi in 1941. All the while absorbing and honing his craft, whilst learning from the masters.
We talked The West Wing, composer Snuffy Walden, our 2 degrees, Aaron Sorkin, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Martin Sheen, Tommy Schlamme, the brilliance, professionalism, and frenetic pace.
With our time swiftly waning we touched on This Is Us and landed on VIrgin River, currently readying to roll on Season 5, as I and many binge the just dropped Season 4.
I could’ve talked with Tim all day and still have longed for more. What a great spirit! Such joie de vivre, not to mention ridiculously easy on the eyes, ears, and I suspect, all five senses.
Put it all together- it was FUN! Two thumbs way up.

October reading… This is an awesome read. I first became aware that this existed after reading an excerpt in The Guardian. The description of wild excess and hedonism appealed to me and I thought I’d probably buy a copy. I was only dimly aware of Loaded and I’ve read the NME on very few occasions, and years after James Brown had anything to do with it. I’m always keen to read anything to do with music, mad times or interesting people though. A few days later I saw that James Brown was going to be doing a book launch at Outlaws Yacht Club, so I went along and that’s where I got this. I’ve not finished it yet, and I’ll probably do a full review when I do. October was an extremely busy time. Stories, stories, and more stories, one better than the next, all fantastical! Peter Riegert exceeded my high expectations and that’s an exceedingly tall order.
Somehow 2 hrs and 45 min flew by in an instant, yet at the same time, we got to know so much about Peter, his life, his work, his thoughts, his heart, and his art.
From the Bronx boy playing stickball to marching with Martin, who had a dream, to an underachieving student, teacher, and waiter, Bella Abzug, to improv, War Babies to Peter’s first resume and headshot––hysterical story! From Off-Broadway, a Marx Brother, to Mamet, aligning lives and love with Bette Midler, Mash, Coma, to the game changer, Animal House, how he got it, so many stories from there to here… Bette, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Matheson, John Belushi, Karen Allen, Mark Metcalf, Chilly Scenes of Winter, John Heard, an Academy Award nomination, Crossing Delancey, Amy Irving, the pickle man––a chick magnet, Local Hero, how that came to be, what it meant to him, crazy stories, one of which brought a tear or two to both our eyes. Burt Lancaster, with whom he shared a long ago historical memory, to Tony Soprano and how James Gandolfini allowed Peter a searingly horrifying yet graceful exit from The Sopranos to Succession and the Amazon crime drama he begins filming on Friday.
We hit highlights of Peter’s work, dug deep into the man, and I hope, gained a new friend. As accessible and fun as Animal House’s Boon, as charming and emotional as Crossing Delancey’s Sam, and as savvy, transformative, and thoughtful as Local Hero’s Mac, Peter Riegert is a warm, complex, fiercely talented human whom I’ve adored since first sight, and respect and appreciate even more now. This time with him was a gift. He's a mensch beyond measure. I so needed the laughs and the eggs.
