Picture this: Dragons using their caves to age cheese. Dragon Cheesemakers!!

The dragon coiled his enormous body, completely blocking the entrance of the tunnel that lead to the caves.

“No,” he snarled, smoke pluming from his nose.

The cheesemonger pinched the bridge of her own nose. “Look, I explained this to you at the start,” she tried once more. “I make cheese.”

“Yes,” the agreed, nodding his scaly head.

“Then I bring the cheese here.”

“Yes.”

“Then you store all the cheese in your cave, keeping it at the perfect temperature and humidity.”

“Yes.” He sounded particularly proud of this part.

“And then when the cheese has ripened,” she concluded. “I come to pick the cheese up again.”

A thunderous scowl clouded his maw. “No.”

“But that’s how it works!” she cried in exasperation. “I make the cheese, you store the cheese, I sell the cheese, I make more cheese!” She peered up at him. “You do realise I cannot bring you new cheese until I have sold this cheese.”

The dragon considered this for a moment. “Ah, but what if—” he began. “What if you go and make more cheese. And bring me the cheese. And I put it in my cave, with the rest of the hoard. And then I keep it there forever.”

“No,” she said flatly.

It was remarkable how much a dragon could look like it had just swallowed a lemon.

“You can’t keep cheese forever,” she insisted. “It will spoil and go bad!”

“You said it would get better and better!” the dragon roared indignantly. “And I take good care of them! With the air flow and the humidity and the temperature!”

“And that is great,” she said, trying to smile through her frustration. “But when a cheese is ripe, it’s ripe! Then you should not be kept anymore, it should be eaten.”

The dragon scraped it’s formidable claws against the stony ground and sulked.

“Look…” The cheese mongering business did not tend to require a lot of sweet-talking, but she was making an effort. “I’m sure the cheeses that aged in your cave are the best cheeses people have ever tasted. When they find out how delicious they are they will want us to make loads more. Maybe several caves’ worth!”

The reptilian eyes stared at her with disgruntled, reluctant interest. “Several caves?”

“If we’re lucky! And I could make so much cheese that I could bring you new cheese as soon as I pick up the aged cheese. Your cave would never even be empty!”

This seemed to strike a chord. The dragon lifted his head a little.

“And that would really be much better for the rest of your hoard,” she continued with fresh inspiration. “Because if you leave cheese too long, it might go bad and spoil the cheeses next to it too!”

A nervous ripple went through the beast’s scaly body, but he clearly was not convinced just yet. “But what sort of a hoard is it if I have to give it away,” he complained.

“Well! Cheese is not just any old hoard! It’s a developing creation! And you will have a hoard that is constantly developing too. Constantly changing, but, if we do this right, never shrinking.”

The dragon looked at her solemnly, wavering with uncertainty. Perhaps she shouldn’t hold it against the poor thing, it must be a difficult concept to wrap his head around.

“And I will tell you what,” she said encouragingly. “If business is good, I can start investing in some really good crumbly cheeses. You can keep those in your cave for five whole years!”

“That is quite a long time for humans, is it not?” he said, sounding a little more cheerful.

“Very long. Especially when it comes to cheese. Cheeses that have been aged that long are very expensive.”

In retrospect, she should perhaps have led with that. Gourmand or not, a dragon was still a dragon after all. A glittering, toothy grin appeared on her recalcitrant business partner’s shout and he moved just enough for her to move past him into the mountain.

“Tell me more about this expensive cheese that crumbles.”

She hid a smirk. “If you help me carry some of the current ones out, it would be my pleasure.”

After rereading ATOS again for the billionth + time, the thought struck me that Killer must, to some extent, feel like just a placeholder. He's there because someone else can't be right now and soon as that person/thing is, he has to step back and wait to be a placeholder again and he's convinced himself he's content with that. And wow, that hits some deep emotional rejection fears.

You get it, anon.

Killer acting as a replacement or a fill-in goes back far longer than just the start of the current ATOS fic timeline. It’s been his role since Cross wanted someone he couldn’t have, and though Killer was also feeling bereft of a certain relationship, he knew full well that he was just acting as a substitute when he started hooking up with Cross. It’s been his role even since Nightmare brought him onboard to work for him because at the time, Nightmare needed additional help to achieve his goals while ignoring the suspiciously empty space at his side that should have been filled by his twin—in his eyes, that is. Killer was a distraction, a means to an end even though their relationship wasn’t anything more than professional at that point (or as professional as one can call a flirtatious, 25-year-old skeleton who’s hellbent on breaking his boss’ standoffish demeanor).

And what’s worse for Killer is that he knows what it used to be like to be wanted for who he is, not for what function he could fill as a replacement. He used to have an extremely normal and arguably happy life with his family and friends before that was all taken away. People used to value him for his company, for being himself, which came primary to his expertise as an engineer. He was talented at and praised for his work, but there was always the understanding that Killer—Sans—was overall just a good friend to be around. It’s hard to suddenly lose that value as a person and pretend that nothing’s wrong.

Fortunately for Killer now, he has years of shutting out his emotions. He will be the perfect subordinate who cuts off any emotional attachment with the bite of his knife in battle. No one will ever need be wiser as long as he can continue to stifle his own hurt and hide it behind an easy grin.

Shame that he didn’t take into account what a positive empath’s effect on his soul could have, though

I was also very enamored with the idea of a Love nun ! I came from Mostly WoW RP, which doesn't have much of a pantheon at all, so when I started bopping around the final fantasy world I was amazed by the Twelve. Menphina captured my attention so fast! I love a moon goddess and I love love and I was curious what Love as Worship looks like in a world constantly beset by calamities and final days and summer vacations. The lack of lore around the 12, at first, was a little bit of a bummer but then I realized it just lets me roll around in all the space and make whatever I want! And it means that other people are doing the same thing and I delight in seeing what I and other Menphina-based-character-havers have come up with! How they align and where they differ, figuring out the whys! I have a lot of headcanons about Menphina that sort of only ever live in Odette's backstory. Like her convent and temple, for instance. And the idea that there are problem several temples to Menphina and each of them focuses on a different type of love! Odette's temple and convent focus on couples' and grief counseling. ANYWAY, thank you very much for the kind ask Anon!!!

To be broad without getting too into sad meta but yes to your tags! Ian was still always Ian even in those mania moments and you can see the different in intimacy with Mickey vs. without Mickey and it’s so important.

he was always ian 😭 exactly 😭 his heart was still open and warm and wide 😭 he still loved so deeply and fully 😭 he adored his family, he adored mickey, he adored mandy 😭 he still hurt and wanted and hoped 😭 

so many people look at those seasons and just see the agitation/the rage, the hypersexuality… i mean. shameless zeroed in on that because they’re such obvious symptoms. and real! of course. but there is (in my opinion) way more nuance to be found. he’s still ian - i think cam really paid attention to that and i’m really grateful.

Insanely flattered you like my au ideas oughhhh thank you anon!!! 🥺🥺🥺🥺 the Dealing With Dragons au is SO FUNNY oh my gods like it is absolutely played for comedy and absurdity that i try to present seriously, but much like the book its based off of, there is a major element of feeling stifled by other people's expectations, forced into roles you don't want to be in (both for the protag and the antag in my au), and doing your best to forge your own life, identity, and happiness anyway.

The overall tone is fairly light, the gags mostly played for laughs (Xisuma as an "evil advisor" in the strictest bureaucratic sense is, i think, one of my favorite ideas ive ever come up with actually) but like with pretty much everything i write, there's a genuine core of heart and seriousness that grounds it back to earth and then weaves it all together. Also, its not a one for one au-- i rarely write those if only because its just not. Challenging enough?? For me to write, and doesn't often keep my interest. Instead it pulls from the worldbuilding and different elements of the original (Grian, like Cimorene in the book, is royalty, and neither of them are happy about their lives at the start) while i try to pave a different path that eventually diverges almost entirely from the original.
