Arts 102: Blog Post, Weeks 11-12 + Reading Reflection
Week 11:
Week 11 was centered on the completion of project five, which focused on syntax and semantics. For this project, using Adobe InDesign, I created a layout following the class demonstration. Then I would choose an object that was consistent in concept, but different in forms (I chose various candles like a pillar candle, a scented candle, a car jar, and a tea light). Then, I would find images online of the candles, and then describe the specific visual qualities of the candle, such as color, shape, and form. Following the syntax, I would describe the candles Being the quickest project of the year, the main challenge I faced was completing this on time. Additionally, since I was absent for the first class of this week, I learned the demonstrations and started the project on the day it was due. In light of the challenge, I found this to be a great opportunity to see what I would create under pressure of a deadline, giving me the opportunity to experience what a professional graphic designer would.

Week 12:
Week 12 focused on the introduction of the final project- The creation of an ARTS 102 book that documents the projects you had completed over the semester and reflects on your personal growth as a graphic designer and artist. Our Monday class fittingly began at the campus library, where we were introduced to project six, as well as the resources the library has to offer. Additionally, the class explored existing graphic design books to draw examples and inspiration from. I enjoyed looking at all of the successful works, and the books I found that stood out to me were Dutch Posters: A selection by Anthon Beeke (though many of the posters were conventionally unsettling, I found myself to be curiously allured by the unique concepts and edge of the many works), Vas: An Opera in Flatland by Steve Tomasula (the unsettling, human body-focused presentation of the work stood out to me; Additionally, I liked the feature of comic bubbles, which conveyed story-telling) and See Red: Woman’s Workshop (I enjoyed the exploration of feminism in the book, as well as the diverse artistic styles of the work).  Some example images are attached below (books in order as mentioned).

Reading Reflection(292-327):
I found myself surprised by learning about how important having computer-related skills can be for the field of graphic design. Personally, I would not say I am proficient with computer language but have had some prior experience that can be potentially beneficial for me as a foundation for the future(coding classes in high school). Also, I found it interesting that learning graphic design, unlike other creative fields, is most successful with formal education. I found the insight provided by the academic breakdown to be an immensely helpful resource that I can use to reflect on where I am as a student and what I can achieve in the future. I always enjoy looking at other designer's work- Andres Iglesias's ice cream pint stood out to me with its incorporation of humor and honesty, and the river-like pattern and soft texture of Lucas Byrum's Antisurveillance Blanket stood out to me conceptually as well.

December 12, 2020 - Angry workers at a Wistron Infocomm facility manufacturing Apple iPhones in Narasapura, India, destroyed the offices of the factory after not being paid their promised wages. Workers destroyed CCTV cameras throughout the factory and flipped and burned executives’ cars. Police who went to the factory were also attacked. [video]/[video]

Surveillance... panopticon. It was a paranoid conspiracy when we were kids. Cold reality today. Wearing a mask and weird makeup is actually good at confusing security cameras. #artistsoninstagram #surveillance #surveillancecamera #panopticon #personofinterest #cyberpunk #dystopian #antisurveillance #camomakeup #antisurveillancemakeup #masks #grunge #punk #goth #albumcover #fakealbumcover https://www.instagram.com/p/CLHL4XHHEnS/?igshid=qotxatr8up8c

A new piece of sigil art has been added. Meet the second symbol of the Sigilum Mox- The Anti-Surveillance Sigil.
Right now, it's available through Redbubble on a number of products (which, today, also happen to be 20% off when you use the code HOTSTUFF20)- here's the link- GO CLICKY
"This entry in the series is designed NOT to be used as an invisibility or cloaking sigil. In fact, wearing it may make you MORE noticeable rather than less. Instead, this is designed to attract the attention of those watching, confuse and confound their sight, increase feelings of paranoia, fear, and distraction. Best used by placing prints, cameras, or other objects bearing the sigil in full view of whatever may be watching. Or worn to serve as a distraction while others do work they wish to go unnoticed."
As per usual, use where needed, take all of the doses in the bottle without ending the regimen early, share/inscribe where needed and useful (with appropriate crediting), make sure to take with food, and purchase when deeply desired.

‘Face to Anti-Face’
‘Face to Anti-Face’ Sarah Rose 2017 Video (5:58 minutes), and 30 page printed A4 book.
Is privacy no longer a privilege we have in our contexts? Do we lose this as soon as we step outside our front doors?- well... assuming we have it within our homes. Is there a possibility we can regain our private self in invasive public spaces? The guide I have presented will offer you the opportunity to regain your privacy, and your private identity in the age of surveillance culture.Facial Recognition technology is quickly becoming a mainstay of commercial and government surveillance systems. Whilst we must consider the benefits in automation and security, it poses a threat to privacy. Sophisticated algorithms are being used to extract personal information about our gender, age, and mood, to which they can be connected to wider databases. Surveillance and photo-documentation is becoming prevalent more and more in our contemporary contexts, whether it is in public spaces, or online via auto-tagging. So…how can we regain this privacy? Yes, it is as simple as facial modification using makeup and hair styling. This guide will focus on the development of a form of urban camouflage and prevention strategy from face- detection technology, the first step to automated face recognition- if it cannot pick up your face in the first place it cannot further recognize your identity; hence privacy achieved. The technique used in this guide to conceal our identities is called ‘dazzle’, a cubist-inspired camouflage that was used during World War 1, to break a part the visual continuity of naval battleships, concealing its orientation and size from enemy surveillance. Similarly, the dazzle techniques employed in this guide break up the continuity of a face from contemporary surveillance devices, as facial recognition algorithms rely on the identification and spatial relationship of key facial features: tonal contours, and symmetry, which when manipulate create the ‘anti-face’. This guide offers you styling tips on how to achieve this privacy, as well as systematic tutorials, and completed looks. The guide and its information is based off the recommendations made by surveillance artist, Adam Harvey.
The video work accentuates these ideas and acts as a companion didactic resource to concealing our identity and regaining a private sense of self and security. The film documents some of the looks I have suggested in a public context, insitu.
