16th January
St Sigebert’s Day/ Old Twelfth Night
Tumblr media
Source: UCANR website
Today is St Sigebert’s Day. Sigebert was another Anglo-Saxon king who renounced his throne in favour of the monastic life. However, when the fearsome pagan king of Mercia, Penda, attacked Sigebert’s former realm of East Anglia, his ex-subjects persuaded him to come out of retirement in order to save them from the pagan’s wrath. Remaining true to his vows, Sigebert agreed to resume his throne, but insisted he be armed with a wooden sword and so avoid taking a human life in battle. Unfortunately for the pacific Sigebert and his East Anglians, Penda’s Mercians destroyed his army, conferring immediate martyrdom on the holy king, as well as sainthood.
Today is also Old Twelfth Night, being the last night of Christmas according to the old calendar. For that reason apple wassailing continued on the night of the 16th for over 200 years after the date of Epiphany Eve moved to 5th January. On this night men would gather by firelight in orchards to toast the apple trees with cider and to wish the spirits of the trees a Happy New Year and exhort them to allow their trees a bountiful late summer harvest. A typical verse sung by the wassailers was:
Old Apple Tree we wassail thee and hope that thou wilt bear,
For Lord doth know where we shall be till apples come another year.
Although the Old Twelfth Night wassailing tradition died out in the early twentieth century, it was revived in the 1980s and enthusiastic wassailing now takes place in the orchards of Much Marcle near Ledbury in Hereford and Worcester; Norton Fitzwarren outside Taunton in Somerset and Carhampton, also in Somerset. Amazingly, the revivals were sponsored and funded by cider makers Westons, and Taunton Cider.

Apple Harvest Day with the Fentons!
The apple harvest has finally arrived. Danny and his parents agreed that today they are going to spend the day at the apple orchard. It’s one of Danny’s favorite things to do with his family. The smell of the apple trees, the feeling of having picked your own, the falling leaves and brisk air that fill the day. It’s the best!
They pull into the parking lot and get out of the Fenton RV. It's a busy day: plenty of kids running about with their parents and cars pulling in and out of the parking lot of the orchard. Despite that, Danny’s practically ready to sprint into the orchard. Jazz, despite her contained nature, looks like she is about ready to do the same, so Danny bumps her, nearly knocking her over. “Race ya!” he shouts. And he takes off!
She follows in her boots, with her scarf trailing partially behind her. “Hey, no fair!” she takes off running after him, her boots slapping the pavement, her scarf partially trailing behind her. Jack and Maddie wonder if they should stop them as they watch all the cars pulling in and out, before deciding ultimately that Jazz should lighten up a little and that Danny, despite being a bit reckless at times, is the fun she needs to have sometimes. Cars shouldn’t drive fast in parking lots with kids anyway.
Danny feels his pride surge as he beats his sister in a totally fair race into the orchard grounds. She’s trailing, about 50 meters behind him, his parents a bit further behind but not much. He laughs, and he is excited! It’s time! Time to pick some apples finally! Definitely gonna harvest some pumpkins! And maybe some apple cider donuts. By that, Danny means, of course he’s getting apple cider donuts! You don’t go to an orchard and not get cider donuts! Apple cider donuts! Donuts!!!
Did he mention the donuts?
Jazz finally catches up to him. “You know, that wasn’t fair.”
“Sorry sis, I still beat you!” Danny is trying to not let his pride show, but oh he can’t help it. Ok, maybe it isn’t so much pride as it is excitement. Jazz lets it go either way.
“So,” following up, “where are we going first?” Danny says, pointing to the three paths they have: the one on the left going to the shop, the one in the middle going to the apples, and the one on the right going to the pumpkin patch and corn field, which, by the way, has a maze! Hehe, get it? Maze ?
Maddie says, “Well, we’re here to pick, so why don’t we go to the shop quickly, see what they have, and go from there.”
Danny can’t say that’s the one he was hoping for but he can’t blame her either for that. It’s donut time then!
They all enter the building. Autumn decor and furniture for sale surrounds the entire front area of the shop, before it leads into their bakery and apple section. Danny gazes past all the useless decor and sprints towards the bakery! He is almost in heaven, spying all the sweets, the fritters, the syrup, the pies, and of course… just, oh god, he is thinking with his stomach! Danny runs past the autumn themed furniture, and to the table.
YES!
He picks up a 12 pack of HIS APPLE CIDER DONUTS!
He is in heaven now.
Turning back to his family, who have only barely made it past the entrance, he calls out, “I got what I need!”
Jazz shakes her head with a smile. Danny sticks his tongue out at her. She rolls her eyes. Danny, clearly annoyed, goes “Oh, come on!” He opens the box and starts shoving donuts into his mouth. “You’re gonna eat them too.” Jazz shakes her head at his muffled sentence, but she can’t argue that either.
Jack and Maddie make their way to the checkout desk to see instructions for picking apples. Danny hears his mom say something. She almost seems concerned. He starts walking towards the desk, his mouth full of donuts still. As he finally reaches his mom and dad, he sees it .
“We want everyone to have the best experience possible at our lovely orchard! For everyone to experience the beautiful look of a full apple tree! Therefore, we are NOT a ‘pick your own’ orchard!”
Danny’s eye twitches. The donut falls out of his mouth. It splats – it just fucking splats on the floor, like his heart!
He can feel the tears beginning to form behind his eyelids. He wanted to… he just wanted to… he just wanted to harvest some apples.
Danny looks at the cashier, who looks just as dead inside as any other customer service worker. He asks, “You guys aren’t pick your own?” The cashier is visibly distressed, as if she has had this conversation maybe 50 different times today. She winces and just nods, whispering a silent “yeah.”
Danny shoves another donut into his mouth, his 5th of the dozen, and begins unraveling and leaves the area to go sit in a corner. He needs to be alone for a bit.
“Well, that sucks,” Jazz says. Jack and Maddie turn towards her. Jazz continues, “No really, that sucks! What kind of capitalist bullshit is this!? Whose brilliant idea was this? To open up the place as an apple orchard and basically sell the experience of the apple orchard without giving people the experience of the apple orchard?”
Jack and Maddie look at the poor cashier, who doesn’t look like she is scared of Jazz – oh no, not at all. Instead, she looks like she is using every ounce of strength in her to not start ranting with Jazz about how much she hates this place, its policies, her bosses, how she’s being forced to work on the weekend, and have the same damn conversation 50 times per hour, that absolutely no damn human on Earth has ever wanted nor asked to have!
Jazz throws her arms out, her disgusted look exposing itself across her face. “And this sign has the audacity to tell me that it wants to offer me the best experience an apple orchard has to offer!? By having me walk past all the apples and having them taunt me by not being allowed to pick them!?”
Danny watches from the sanctuary that is his corner the exchange between his sister and the cashier. He kinda laughs, while eating more donuts. The cashier practically turns into a skeleton with the level of dread she has for her job. Wait… no she actually did. Danny sets the donut down and rubs his eyes, and takes in that she in fact just turned into a fucking skeleton! The bones rattle as it begins hollering and screaming about how it wants to harvest apples and all the goodies the orchard has to offer, but it can only scream and not talk.
You need a tongue to speak.
The skeleton begins screaming louder in sheer agony from this realization. It grabs the cash register, ripping it out from its slot, and shoves it across the desk, pushing everything on it, all the pencils and items sitting on the cashier desk to the floor. It turns around and then pulls the display case of the special autumn decor to the floor. It looks at the apples and wails, and starts marching towards them, trying to keep its balance. It walks right past Jazz, Maddie, and Jack, who just watch as it idly marches by.
Danny gives his family a “‘da fuck?” look from the corner he took shelter in, like if they should do something. They know he has his powers now, all of them do. Jack and Maddie give him a “I don’t know look,” and just continue watching the skeleton shriek and go on a rampage against the orchard's stock. Danny probably should do something, but he has to admit, he’s enjoying this. Serves money grubbing capitalists like Mr. Krabs right!
The skeleton summons a big sledge hammer, knocking the apples to the floor. It points and screams at one that fell on the floor. It’s obvious it’s mocking it, pretending that apple is the boss who put her up to have that damn conversation every fucking minute of every fucking day! It finishes its rant, before taking another big swing and smashing it.
It moves its way down the store further, vandalizing every piece of sellable furniture and clothes it can find.
Danny gets up, begins walking toward the bakery section once again, and then snags 1, no he grabs 2, nope sorry, Imean… wait, um… oh my… 7, yes, he takes 7 dozen donut packs and walks towards the alternative exit. As he passes his family, he tells them “I’ve seen enough. Imma go enjoy myself at the car.”
And he walks out.
Jazz raises an eyebrow as she watches the door close after her little brother, and she asks, “Did Danny just steal 8 packs of donuts?”
“Yup,” Maddie says.
The skeleton is still screaming and rampaging in the background.
“Can you blame him?” Jazz asks.
“Nah, I agree. I’ve seen enough too.”
“Shouldn’t we do something?” Jack asks
They hear a window shatter, along with the cracking of wood. Guess it made it to the front entrance.
Jazz responds, “I think the skeleton’s got it handled.”
Maddie mehs it out of there. Jazz does too. Then Jack. They go back to the car and find 3 empty donut packages outside the RV. Jazz’s face floods with concern and goes to open the back door and finds Danny has opened yet another donut packet and is eating one half asleep on the RV’s couch!
4 packages of donuts. He’s eaten 4 packages of donuts, and is still eating them… This boy is gonna get himself killed one day and she’s gonna be the one to clean up his mess. She begins walking towards Danny but is stopped by their mom. “Jazz dear,” Maddie whispers, as if she had read her mind, “leave him be. He’s had a hard day.”
Jazz exclaims, “What about the woman who turned into a skeleton just now? You know, just disintegrated because of her job?”
Maddie sighs. “Retail will do that to you, sweetie.”
They hear screams as they pull the RV out of the parking spot.

Caught in the cross-fire: A tale of my doll from Muzaffarabad
In First Person Hafsa Masoodi* In the tumultuous cradle of Neelum Valley, where mountains stood like sentinels between Indian and Pakistani administered territories, as a little girl, I had dreams as large as the apple orchards that framed my world. My father, a school teacher, was a wanderer by necessity. He frequently journeyed to Muzaffarabad along a perilous road shadowed by cross-fire…

If you own a pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or really any other fall activity it is NOT acceptable to build a shitty corn maze. Either make a good one that you can get lost in or dont bother.
I get making it easier for little kids but I say they need to develop the ability to choose the right direction purely based on vibes (and how to run from creepy noises in the dark)
- a person who believes the best part about fall is corn mazes and is tired of the *vast* range in quality
