I actually like how Devon Giehl’s description of Callum in 5x08 is a lot more nuanced than what many people have concluded: for starters it’s not just about Rayla, and it’s not just about Dark Magic.
Sure, Rayla may have been the catalyst, and Dark Magic may have been the result, but the Callum’s “dark side” doesn’t just come out when Rayla is in danger, and it had already come out by the time he used Dark Magic.
It comes out in situations when things rapidly spiral out of control, and it comes out when he feels his back is against the wall and he has to force the situation back into something he can handle.
Second (and more importantly), this isn’t unique to Callum: everyone has a darker nature that they don’t fully understand or even like, but part of growing up is realizing you will become this person from time to time. This is also true for the other main characters—Rayla lies and abandons Callum for the sake of a revenge quest, Ezran lashes out at Runaan’s arrow, and Soren can be casually cruel.
What Callum goes through this season is an inversion of his journey leading to learning the Sky Arcanum. If connecting to the Sky was about realizing the depths of his potential, connecting to the Ocean was about realizing that he doesn’t fully know or understand those depths and that those depths can drag him to a pretty dark place. Now, the tail end of the series will be about Callum reconciling both of these conflicting sides of him.

Thoughts about Callum's magic use in s4/s5 that aren't a proper meta but series of parallels/lil connections
First off is Callum casting aspiro frigis, one of my favourite spells we've seen before, but we've never seen him cast it before! I'm also intrigued by the size difference between his and Viren's casting of it, since while we've seen Viren make smaller (3x08, 3x09) they're both assisted by primal stones (the one in Callum's sky staff, the OG primal stone for Viren) so Callum's not being big enough to completely encompass the banther didn't make sense to me? However, given that Viren is aided by the primal stone and the relic staff (which is absolutely juiced with something wild), that difference would make more sense.
We also get to see more combat spells this season from Callum, which is exciting, as his previous one in S4 was just fulminus, so it's nice to see more variety (aspiro frigis, the angulus arrow spell, the lightning fist spell). Callum using the lightning spell with his bare hand given that if it didn't pan out / he got nicked even slightly he'd be corrupted is especially insane of him, but hey - you messed with his girl. Gotta pay the price.
I was also pleased/impressed with the misdirected Fulminus spell in 5x08, as it makes it clear Callum was aiming to kill Finnegrin with that bad boy, to be perfectly honest. Also fun to see him use primal magic without his staff for once, as his greatest asset is still that he can do magic without said external source like a primal stone or staff, relying here instead on his inner arcanum and the fierce storm raging around them. (And more sky magic during storms, please!)
It seems that Callum has prioritized memorizing combat spells as opposed to other kinds of spells, which makes sense - in a combat situation, you don't want to be pausing to check your spellbook. However, we still see him check his book to find spells, the same way he did in S4.
I think this is a very sweet sign of growth, as in arc 1 he didn't need to check as he only had around 4-5 spells he knew, but now there's so many he wants to verify / look for them when in doubt. (Probably smart, as messing up a spell or doing the rune the wrong way could have tricky consequences? Ficlets when). Not that he always knew his magic (or remembered his own words) perfectly, either ("She might've called me a fool" / "Who told you that?" "You did") bless his soul.
Can't wait to see what Ocean magic he gets to add to his repertoire next season, and how it'll be utilized in the future!

Jeremy Carver didn't get the respect he deserves in that pollsnatural writers poll. I need to remind y'all who was doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it came to early destiel. Jeremy Carver wrote (or, was credited as the writer) for the following:
3x11 "Mystery Spot" - not a destiel ep, just a banger 👍
4x03 "In the Beginning" - aka the first hint of Cas being sympathetic to Dean. 3 episodes into Cas's existence Jeremy Carver was asking the big questions, like what would it look like if Dean and Cas stared all soulfully into one another's eyes??? I MEAN,
4x20 "The Rapture" - the Jimmy Novak episode. Gave us Dean's tranquil fishing dream, Cas's note-passing interruption. Gave us all the conflict of Dean witnessing Jimmy Novak in place of Cas. Gave us that mic drop "I learned my lesson while I was away, Dean. I serve Heaven, I don't serve man. And I certainly don't serve you" hell of a walk-off line.
5x03 "Free to Be You and Me" - do I even need to expand on this one??? "I need your help because you are the ONLY one who will help me," Thelma and Louise quote, Bert and Ernie quote, "you are not gonna die a virgin," the Raphael confrontation, etc etc Dean tells Cas it's the happiest he's been in years!!!
5x08 "Changing Channels" - another classic episode that's great even without the undercurrent of destiel. But undercurrent there is. One of the recurring themes of the episode is Dean being worried about what Gabriel's doing to Cas. Plus, helloooo, "pretty boy angel" Jeremy Carver's horniness for Misha CAME THROUGH.
5x18 "Point of No Return" - do you all not remember "last person who looked at me like that, I got laid" do you all not remember "I gave EVERYTHING for you, and this is what you give to me????" do you all not remember "what the hell happened to him? / "me"???? And a sidenote: do you all not remember Cas carving a banishing sigil into HIS OWN CHEST?????? Again I say, Jeremy Carver's crush on Misha CAME THROUGH.
8x01 "We Need To Talk About Kevin" - I'm pretty sure at this point JC became showrunner, so there was a ~shift in the blatancy of destiel in his writing, but still. This ep is the start of the Purgatory flashbacks, the first peek at Dean's guilt over Cas not making it out with him.
8x23 "Sacrifice" - the 'ET goes home" bar scene, the dozens and dozens of pages worth of meta about cupid and the arrows and the two dudes falling in love in front of Dean and Cas.
9x01 "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here" - Dean's "please, man, I need you here" prayer to Cas, which miiiight be the first time he prays to Cas seriously. Their v. soft phone call sometime after where Dean is just as worried for Cas as Cas is for him. Plus, hey-o, would it be a Carver episode without objectifying Misha in some way? This is the ep with the infamous laundry scene, of Cas shucking off his clothes in a very poignant loss-of-identity horny way.
9x23 "Do You Believe in Miracles?" - uh, ever heard of "to save Dean Winchester. That was your goal, right? I mean, you draped yourself in the flag of heaven but ultimately it was all about saving one man" which is pretty much a Castiel thesis statement dropped casually as dialogue.
10x01 "Black" - okay, picture this, Cas is depressed and lying wantonly atop a bed, clad only in a robe that's open juuuust wide enough his chest peeks through. To Sam, he wistfully admits "I miss him" as they tiptoe around the subject of Dean. Fanfic, you say? No, Jeremy Carver.
10x23 "Brother's Keeper" - there's a deleted scene of Cas showing up in Dean's dream, bloody and beat up, introduced by the bartender as Dean's "admirer." Not to mention! Winchester Derangement Syndrome. Not to further mention!! Shattered at the altar of Winchester.
11x01 "Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire" - gonna let this gif speak for itself:

Some more canon-Chenford thoughts...
So whether or not it seemed like Tim and Lucy deciding to take the next step was too fast, or too slow, or was missing some steps, I think it's worth realizing that they really are only at the beginning of their journey as a couple.
What we got in the winter finale, essentially, was them admitting that everything up until now, all these moments - which we also saw and read into - were indeed real and true feelings that they were developing for one another. (Yay!) But it still left a lot of open questions.
I've been thinking a lot about my previous OTP Olicity (I know there is some overlap in the fandoms and if not you can skip the next bit but I think you'll be able to follow). 4x22/5x01 for Chenford was 2x23 for Olicity. We have the pretending to be a couple/in love, except it's not actually pretend and is the catalyst for more. And then 5x08/5x09 parallels 3x01 for Olicity, when Oliver asks Felicity out on a date. I wasn't watching Arrow live at the time but thinking back on it, that also seemed kind of out of the blue. We knew Felicity had feelings/a crush and we suspected that Oliver did too - but nothing had been confirmed out loud. (So kind of a reversed Tim and Lucy situation.)
The date was when we finally got to hear them speak out loud about how they felt and when they started feeling that way. But Olicity's first date went horribly wrong. They didn't have their explosive, life or death, all-in moment (and first time) until much later in the season. And it was a few episodes after that (following circumstances that kept them apart) before they could ride off into the sunset.
And even later on once they were together, there were still challenges and obstacles they had to overcome which only strengthened their relationship. (I won't discuss the whole break up and getting back together because I honestly think that with Chenford taking 5 seasons to get together, we luckily won't have to suffer through that.)
Anyway, I guess that Tim and Lucy taking that next step didn't happen quite how I pictured it, but on the other hand it hasn't completely happened yet and I'm hopeful that we have many more moments to look forward to, now that we know the show has committed to them:
I want that first awkward date where they don't know what to talk about because they've spent hours and hours riding together and talking about everything. I want them to clear the air about all the miscommunications that caused them to think that the other one wasn't interested. I want them to admit when they first started thinking of the other in a romantic way. Hopefully we get their first "real" kiss (c'mon Tim!).
Maybe the date doesn't end well, or maybe it ends very well.
But regardless, I think (hope) there will be a key moment in a later episode when they realize just how much is on the line for them career wise if they truly want to be together. Maybe Tim takes a step back for her own good and Lucy gets mad at him for making decisions for her. Here's where I can picture a huge explosive fight turning into their all-in love confession /explosive first time!
And they'll have to decide what to do at work and if they keep their relationship a secret. Then there's the whole issue of Lucy's UC career and how Tim feels about that. And then they'll have to navigate just normal couple things, like how they build their lives together despite their differences in personality, how they see their futures...down the line, discussing moving in together, marriage, kids. I think there can be some really rich story lines for them even once they are officially dating.
This got long! But I think, bottom-line, we are really only at the beginning of their story and I think there is some great potential for all the things we want and were hoping for in their journey to still happen, not to mention some pleasant surprises we may not see coming.
And as always there is A03 to turn for when we're looking for more (just in this post alone there are a few ideas for fics I have)! Thoughts are always welcome :)

The Hōzen Through The Seasons
1x01 || It's a Hozen and in Buddhism, it symbolizes reconnecting.
1x05 || And you gave me this. I mean, it's an arrowhead.
2x02 || And my brother gave me that when he came back from the dead. Said it was a Hozen...some Buddhist thing that symbolizes reconnecting.
2x07 || It has a Buddhist inscription on one side. It reminded me of my father.
5x08 || It's called a Hozen. It symbolizes reconnecting...It's a very thoughtful gesture from your amazingly loving sister.
7x01 || It’s a symbol of re-connection. Oliver gave it to Thea and she gave it to me before she left. As long as you have this, I will always be able to find you.

Felicity Smoak Is One Brave Precious Badass Cupcake! #32
As we all know Felicity is a precious badass cupcake! I figure it can’t hurt to look at the many acts of bravery she has performed because let’s face it - our girl rocks!
Arrow 5x05 - So many feels for Felicity in this episode she clearly still loves Oliver, I think it hurt to hear Oliver encourage her to move on...the pain was never far from her face in 5a and these gifs show it so well!
Arrow 5x06 - The physical distance between Felicity and the man she loves when she needed him most, I know it was self-imposed but it still hurts
Arrow 5x08 - Not going to lie, did not love this episode but even the alternate reality Felicity was amazing
Arrow 5x09 - While awkward, Felicity held her own with Oliver’s date, poor woman never really stood a chance
Arrow 5x09 - Felicity’s sass was on clear display between the line below and asking why don’t guys listen?
FELICITY SMOAK IS AMAZING.
Thanks to those who made the gifs.

in reference to what i mean in this post bc now i'm just thinking about meta as a structured debate it'd go like (arrows for 'rebuttals')
I see Callum as more focused on the greater good because he left Harrow in 1x03 in order to help return the egg → That's one of the reasons I see Callum as selectively loyal to just Rayla and Ezran in the manner / have never posited that Harrow was part of his 'inner circle'. He cares about the greater good but will ultimately put Ez and/or Rayla above it when push comes to shove, and he knew the castle wasn't a safe place for the egg or his brother.
Building on that idea of Callum's loyalty being tethered to Ezran, in 1x06 Callum is willing to leave Ezran under the ice to retrieve the egg, even if he's worried, showing he is willing to put the mission and the egg's safety first. → I view that interaction as one Callum reluctantly participates in given the fact he 1) is stopped by Rayla from going after Ezran, 2) has to be convinced not to, and 3) doesn't settle down until Rayla points out they have to stay up on the surface in order to be able to pull Ezran out.
Unlike Viren (pre-5x09) and Claudia, Callum is disgusted and put off by dark magic, showing that he has a different view of dark magic than they do. → I agree that Callum has a different view of dark magic than either Viren or Claudia do - he's not using it for power (Viren), appearances, or casual uses (Claudia), but that just emphasizes his choice to use it, which from 2x07 onwards always felt very "I know something is Wrong and I will do it anyway," as while we can understand and rationalize his decision in 5x08 as 'not that bad', he is clearly fucked up over it and does view as something bad. He just did it anyway, which in some ways makes it all worse.
For both cases, information and specific examples are being offered to explain the interpretations. If someone does view Harrow as having been in Callum's inner circle, than an interpretation of Callum being more globally focused makes sense, but if you're like me and you don't view Harrow and Callum's dynamic that way, then you're probably going to lean more towards Callum not only being selectively loyal but prioritizing that loyalty, etc etc. Understanding where people diverge and then respecting it accordingly by being able to provide well thought out, consistent examples for either (or both) interpretations for a character is not only a great way to gear up a brain for more analysis, but can also help you greatly develop worlds, stories, and characters of your own.
