Hacketteers Headcanons baby!

Abi and Emma

Abi is a tumblrina for sure and posts fan art of various shows there mixed with her ranting about American politics and how she's an anarchist (I headcanon her as a closet anarchist who is very quiet about it in public but on social media she'll just go ham).

Abi draws fan art of a lot of stuff but mostly you'll find Shera fan art there, where they (she/they nonbinary Abi babyyy) usually post Catradora art as well as just Adora (she may or may not have a crush on her because she reminds them of her blonde girlfriend).

Emma is a big influencer and after dating Abi learns that Tumblr still exists?! And then promptly makes an account there where she sends Abi so many dumb jokes as asks (a few of the ask posts get pretty popular).

After Abi gets Emma to watch Shera and Emma realizes Abi has a crush on Adora because she reminds them of her she instantly wants to cosplay. Abi is a little more apprehensive about it but Emma has her dress up as Catra while she dresses as Shera and almost drops Abi while holding her bridal style for a photoshoot.

Emma's blog mainly consists of reblogs from Abi and photos that Emma takes of her everyday life along with some asks she gets in her inbox. Some of her followers found her account and Emma finds it a much better way to interact with her audience.

Abi has turned their girlfriend into a tumblrina now and has no idea what to do about it, especially when that leads to Emma wanting to do way more cosplays, even making TikToks with them.

Abi also streams sometimes, and is usually joined by Dylan and Emma. They typically play Minecraft or, if they have the whole crew, Jackbox.

Emma is pansexual and a trans girl but stealth on most of her socials until one pride month where she fully comes out online.

Abi is autistic as well as Emma, who masks more loudly than she does.

Abi's nonbinary with she/they pronouns and is a lesbian after digging herself out of the comphet.

Kaitlyn

Kaitlyn loves bugs, as a kid they were one of the only things that kept her company when her parents were usually out at work or lecturing her about school.

She starts collecting bug earrings after her grandmother gives a pair of firefly earrings to her on her 16th birthday, which was the day she was finally allowed to get her ears pierced according to her parents.

Kaitlyn grows up loving movies like A Bug's Life and even Antz and Bee Movie. Her and Dylan still watch that while getting high together in present day.

One of her parents was a cop and taught her how to handle guns properly, and upon growing up, learning more about what the police actually do, and already having a bad relationship with her parents, goes hard on her stance against the police. That's why she's such a stickler for gun safety because she's seen enough 'professionals' lack it.

Kaitlyn's style of comedy and joking comes from a combination of her grandfather's dad jokes and her families passive aggressive joking nature. It's how they show their love (debatable whether or not Kaitlyn's parents use it that way though). So when Kaitlyn is really close to someone, like Jacob, she's really biting and sarcastic, but her loved ones know she doesn't mean it. Her tough exterior definitely comes from being rebellious growing up and arguing with her parents.

Kaitlyn one day finds a really small praying mantis right outside her window and decides to keep it, but instead of just sticking it in a bug cage and forgetting about it like she did as a kid, she actually researchs keeping Praying Mantises as pets and makes sure she's following all the advice to a T.

She gets a nice vivarium for her mantis and soon after decides to name it Master Mantis after the praying mantis from Kung Fu Panda, which was one of her favorite movies growing up aside from animated bug movies. She just ends up calling him Master and really enjoys watching him hunt and stalk around the faux grass Kaitlyn had placed in the vivarium.

She also gets a spider and names him Peter after spiderman because I choose to believe she's a Marvel comics enjoyer who loves the Tobey Maguire movies with all her heart. As well as Star Wars. She's a closet nerd.

She's aromantic and sapphic as well!

Has never been allowed an actual pet aside from her bugs so she feels so weird around them, Dylan's cat especially. But after she gets used to Shrodinger, Kaitlyn starts to secretly spoil the hell out of her.

Dylan

Dylan starts streaming himself on Twitch, mostly music related streams where he makes some cursed remix or song combo and shows it to his small but loyal following who then pretend to be upset by it. He also streams himself 'teaching' quantum physics like he's a teacher and the chat is his class (think Professor Lando, talking about wacky things with sarcastic professionalism).

He also streams him and his friends playing games together, typically Minecraft with Abi and Emma, sometimes Max will also join.

I see Dylan as someone who's probably a kid of divorced parents and had to kind of witness the divorce, his mom getting sole custody because his dad was an asshole.

I imagine his mom as a kind of hippie parent as well as a 'crazy cat lady', so Dylan grows up surrounded by cats and loves them a lot. His mom and him look so similar aside from height because he literally towers over her.

She's a very chill parent and has always supported Dylan through his transition and coming out as gay. She will pay for all of it and after announcing that Dylan just bursts into tears and they hug for several minutes after.

His mom divorced Dylan's dad because of how he treated Dylan and his coming out, along with how emotionally abusive he was to her and Dylan.

They're very close and his mom is the one who actually introduces him to weed, letting him smoke with her on his 19th birthday.

Dylan's mom is the type of mom to put up a pride flag outside of their house and have shirts that say 'i love my gay/trans son'.

Dylan goes on Twitter for a day, posts an inconsequential hot take about whatever popular show at the time and disappears for several months only to come back to pissed off people in the replies which amuses him to no end.

Dylan is definitely one of those people who hates Twitter and complains about it but still uses it anyway because he thinks it's funny to shit post.

Probably went to the Area 51 raid specifically to record the event and the idiots involved.

Probably bleaches his hair every once in a while when he's bored and sometimes he may or may not add color to it.

Wears his contacts around other people because he doesn't want them to see him as a nerd but starts caring less when the others fully meet Dylan Dylan and wears his glasses mostly.

Vague posts about his boyfriend and never fully explains who he is aside from some vague allusions.

Has ADHD and frequently fiddles with his fingers and rubs them together as a stim. He wears a fidget ring that Ryan bought for both himself and Dylan to use.

Dylan is a city boy through and through, he didn't know what a trail cam is, he has never lived near the woods in his life.

Dylan kind of named himself after Dylan Sprouse because the name always stuck in his head as a kid, growing up watching Suit Life of Zack and Cody. He's also had people tell him he looks like the lost Sprouse sibling so he mostly does it for shits and giggles until he realizes the name actually makes him feel good.

Dylan gets more tattoos post game, most of them having a theme of freedom with some geometric designs, some involving music as well.

Dylan and Abi celebrate Hanukkah together every year and Dylan always makes Abi wear ugly Hanukkah sweaters. They celebrate at his apartment and have sleepovers where they watch old Christmas movies that Ryan will pick out.

Ryan

Ryan wears nail polish often, usually only black but sometimes he'll paint his middle finger red or purple.

He's autistic and supernatural stuff, usually cryptids are his special interests. He stims in pretty small ways unless he's really excited, the only person ever really seeing his bigger stims being Dylan, Kaitlyn, Sarah and his grandparents. His stims are usually hand flapping or rubbing his hands over his face a lot, which sometimes does cause some stinging. Ryan's sister is autistic as well and frequently mirrors her siblings stims.

Ryan and Kaitlyn bond over being closer to their grandparents over their bio parents. They trade stories about their families and are the only two who truly understand each other's childhood trauma. Ryan is just as good friends with Kaitlyn as Dylan is.

Ryan and Abi make animations together and Ryan will sometimes help Abi out with their fan art when she sends it to him for him to comment on. They bond a lot, especially after she spends a lot of time at Ryan's and Dylan's apartment during the holidays.

Ryan casually uses he/they pronouns and slowly gets into wearing more femme stuff/styles as he becomes more confident after encouragement from his group of friends and his boyfriend. Ryan and Abi bond over their pronouns usually jokingly ('congratulations on the gender' 'nice pronouns ya got there').

Emma sometimes does his makeup, usually involving smeared black or gold eyeshadow, and they wear it pretty much everywhere he goes for the day. Dylan always tells him how handsome he looks in it.

Ryan takes Dylan to all of their favorite places that he's seen people go hunting for cryptids, especially Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It's practically a holiday/vacation spot for Ryan and Dylan (reluctantly (he secretly loves it)) at this point.

Ryan gets into watching people create and sew things onto their clothes and then immediately wants to get a sewing machine and go to town.

He ends up getting one from his grandmother and uses it to sew on patches to a punk battle jacket he's creating.

He gets tattoo sleeves post game, most of them dragons and related creatures, which he had as a hyperfixation growing up, being given a Dragon book by his grandparents.

Ryan's sister Sarah is living with her grandparents and he often goes over, inviting Dylan, to family game nights they've done since he was a kid. They play things like Uno and Monopoly almost all night.

Ryan is such a good big brother to his sister and frequently face times her, and sometimes takes her over to his and Dylan's apartment for a day. She loves Shrodinger much to the cats reluctance. Sarah also really loves Dylan and spends a lot of time with him when she's over at their place.

Ryan knows sign language because of his sister being nonverbal pretty much her whole life. They were both taught by their grandmother growing up, who is deaf and has been for several years.

Ryan has Dylan learn it to, teaching him himself in exchange for Dylan teaching him more about tech like he promised. It's also good to see him use it to try and understand his sister without needing her to write something down which typically overwhelms her.

Ryan is a person who secretly uses Tumblr and follows both Abi and Emma but never posts anything personal so they don't figure out it's him. He'll post some art sometimes and reblog important information that effects their life and the occasional post about his boyfriend, who they vague post about. Usually to gush. He also absolutely reblogs posts about cryptids and a ton of Buzzfeed Unsolved stuff.

Ryan is a very good leader when in a bad situation and typically is looked to for guidance by others around him because of that. He can be kind of blunt sometimes which people see as rude but Ryan knows what he meant.

Despite stepping up as a leader in dire situations, making sure people are okay like he always did with his sister, they're very introverted and avoid a lot of interactions. If your or his life isn't in danger, you might never hear a full sentence from the guy. He's just content to lay by his boyfriend with his headphones in, listening to a podcast or watching an old Unsolved video.

Ryan's love language is mostly actions, doing things for people that they need done or helping them out without being asked. When words and tone fail him, his actions help show others his true feelings.

dylan: still pretty much the same opinion as back then LMAO i did have a more recent convo abt dylan (which def changed some thoughts abt him. esp related to his potential adhd and lack of a filter) but i stilll don't like him, sorry

nick: same thoughts as before honestly. i still think he doesn't deserve abi in the slightest. and his involvement w/ emma's dare still makes me very upset, ESP when the fanbase refuses to acknowledge his involvement in it lol. i dont doubt that racism comes into play w/ nick and his whole lack of a story and such, but i jut. i cant stand him

ok so like. originally seán made a game about the egos that was so successfull that a company that makes movies approached him with an offer to make a movie based on his game

BUT

we all know what seán is doing to these characters now, the anomaly found video and the comics are just the tip of the iceberg. so, let's revamp the actor au!!

(backstory, info about the actors and some headcanons under the cut)

before we properly start: seán is friends with a guy named antony; they started to talk when "jacksepticeye" was created, antony used to help him with some of the editing. so, in this universe, antony was one of the editors along with alice

seán always discussed this story with his editors, and antony was the one that really motivated, gave new stories, reasons, showed how he could make it better, and act better as well!! he's an actor too :]

so, when seán (i'm repeating his name too much sorry) started to change the route of the story and said he wanted something more serious, antony (and a team, ofc) helped him develop Anomaly Found. and for all his help and ideas, seán asked his friend to portray anti from now on. and antony couldn't be more honoured

so, anomaly found happens! seán's chase here like irl. and the comics come out, and much more stuff, etc etc. to give the egos an ending, he decides to make it a movie, but since he couldn't like. act as 5 dudes and at the same time help with production, he decided to hire actors!

and now, some headcanons of this AU for the soul :]

Seán and Antony were the ones to make the auditions, and they both wanted actors that could bring their experiences and thoughts into the characters

bc of that, Elias' german (but not a doctor, that'd be asking too much), George's mute and Patrick's autistic

Elias is very good at acting as Henrik, but he's not like him in the slightest. he's the youngest of the crew and a big jokester

despite that, he loves Henrik to bits! he's always doing lives and videos like "henrik answers your questions" while they're filming

this is Ryan's first big budget movie, and he's kinda nervous about it

different from Chase, he isn't married and honestly hates alcohool. when asked, he usually says "so is anyone interested in being my stacy? aside from the divorce and well. the horrors"

Elias jokes he's much more like initial Chase (he watched all the videos about the egos, even if Seán said it's not necessary bc a lot changed) and Ryan's much more like fanon Henrik

Patrick and Ryan are the most serious of the crew, it's hard to get a smile out of them. that doesn't mean they don't enjoy the movie or their company, ofc!

Antony's a dad! his son plays as Chase's kid bc it was the only kid that wasn't scared of Anti's makeup (and the antiaverage shippers of this universe enjoy this fact a lot)

Oliver and George are the ones who unintentionally spoil the most

Oliver looovees to talk and read about Marvin shipps. he's feeding the marvelsepticeye shippers very well!

Patrick on the other side isn't very happy in joining his shenanigans lol

George is a modern man, he loves his cellphone and his bluetooth earphones, so acting as Jameson (a man from 1920s) was a bit of a challenge to him, but he loves challenges!

he's very vocal about ableism towards mute people. and also very vocal about jj's sexual life

if they ever went to buzzfeed to promote the movie, Patrick would loooove the puppy interviews and George and Elias would loooove the "[x] reads thirst tweets"

when asked if they knew jacksepticeye,

Elias: ofc, who doesn't? i used to watch his videos all the time! what do you mean he's the one behind this

Ryan: i used to watch a bit when i was younger, we're the same age so it was like hanging out with a friend. what do you mean he's the one behind this

Oliver: ooh, i guess so? my siblings used to watch this dude like, all day. he's the one doing this? neat, i guess

Patrick: of course, everytime i mentioned i'm from Ireland people used to be like "omg jacksepticeye's from there!!!", it kinda annoyed me. he's the director????... he didn't hear me, right?

not to be totally predictable, but my character ask is: Ryan Erzahler

First impression - From his character description and the trailer I thought he would be more of a hipster. From his early scenes I liked him, giving relatable social anxiety vibes.

Impression now - I love him! Ryan my beloved! I think he’s the most developed character, we know about his hobbies, family, future plans ect. And I really like his dynamic with Chris. He’s kinda the perfect character for a writer because when there’s not enough in canon it’s hard to connect with them (why I struggle to like Nick) but if theres too much it adds a lot of pressure.

Favorite moment - I love the scene where he and Dylan are walking up to the radio hut and talking. It’s my favourite in their dynamic and I think when Dylan is honest and vulnerable for seemingly the first time all summer Ryan actually starts to fall for him and take him more seriously. His questions about Dylan’s interests in physics seemed very genuine and he even makes some more jokes! I think it’s my second fav moment in the whole game, behind the Laura and Max reunion hug.

Idea for a story - My current the quarry wip now my college au is done is about Ryan, Dylan and Kaitlyn being poly whilst Jacob continues to misread the situation as a love triangle he must intervene in before someone gets hurt. It’s another more lighthearted fic.

Maybe two couples needed his help. Nick and Abi. Kaitlyn and… well, he’d have to figure out who worked best for her and then nudge them in the right direction.

Jacob smiled to himself, his own lingering heartbreak over last summer and Emma already forgotten.

Unpopular opinion - I don’t think Ryan’s rude to or disinterested in the rest of the counselors. He’s coded as neurodivergent and a lot of favs have headcanoned him as autistic specifically. I’ve seen justice smith in other stuff and he’s very expressive, so Ryan’s aloofness isn’t him being a bad actor, it’s a character choice.

Ryan clearly cares about his friends and just isn’t great at expressing it through words. But he throws himself into danger to protect his friends. He’s also very funny in the same kind of dry, sarcastic way Dylan is, he’s just better at being straight (haha) faced when delivering it.

Im not sure how unpopular that opinion actually is though. I’ve seen more people defending Ryan and mentioning seeing hate but I haven’t seen that much negativity against him.

Favorite relationship - Dylan obviously.

Favorite headcanon - Ryan loves studio ghibli films! I could see it being something he hyperfixated on as a kid and him having a bunch of those giant artworks for all his favourite films. Watching them inspired him to learn art and animation.

THE WALTEN FILES: my jumbled notes on my blind run-in with this web series

first off this is gonna be long and unorganized, also this is my second time writing this as i had lost literally half of my progress and im This (imagine two fingers almost touching with a 0.0000000001mm distance between them) close to ripping all of the fucking hair out of my goddamn head. but now this will be extra long and yes, i will lose some accuracy to my first writing but thats okay ill probably edit this a kajillion times over

which brings me to my next tangent; im literally braindumping here. so to have a smidge of organization all afterthoughts, edits and corrections will be boldened, i forgot what im gonna do with italicized text but ill probably bolden it here yeah im pretty sure its for side tangents, separate from Corrections, which are in bold. also theyre for emphasis too.

so in general, this post right here is all of my notes i wrote down on my grid-patterned sticky notes (which i used WAYYYY too much of) about the first 3 uploaded walten files youtube videos transferred onto my handy dandy digital notebook, this b(l)og. yeppers peppers. you know im serious about this shit when i typed probably over like a thousand fucking words including boldened shit, italicized shit and motherfucking links, lost it ALL, and im sitting here re-typing it again.

i feel bad about this but im not gonna trigger warn right here, but this is technically a warning. if you want a list of triggers as to what this post (and the walten files in general) i will link a little list to that here

THE WALTEN FILES - VIDEO #1

clarifying this now, im gonna put some useless shit which i thought was code onto this because even though it was useless it was part of my notes and im physically going to combust if i dont put down every single thing i wrote on my papers. so what i thought was code was in the closed captions, i started writing it down when i got to the second video but came back to my first videos notes to include them. i wrote down the first letter to every word that was capitalized in the closed captions, which i had on as a default because number one i knew going into this id need them because most web horror things like args and cryptic shit like that has some of the most crucial shits in the closed captions. number two i am autistic and have auditory processing issues and have most closed captioning on as a default if theyre available.

i then jotted, in parenthesis of course, the names of the animatronics when they were listed in the animation section of the video; bon aka the blue bunny, sha aka the sheep one, boozoo aka the clown<3 honk<33, and banny aka the purpled eyelashed up one who is also a bunny btw. also i got boozoo the clown and boozoo the mustache guy confused because apparently the clowns name is billy???? but they named “boozoo” in bons sleepover and showed the clown? idk maybe im an idiot and theyre the same or just an idiot and theyre different or a super mega (matt and ryan?!?!??) idiot in general which is probably the case

i started drawing little stars to write down things i thought would be super important or to 100% look at again. the first subject of this pointy torture was the part of the video where at 3:00, i marked it down to make sure to reverse the audio as it was most definitely a weird audio that has that signature warp-y effect that makes sure you KNOW its in reverse. i then listened back to it Very carefully (still got it wrong) and got this: “you finally start to remember. that old doll. they will look out for you soon” im also pretty sure i heard “sophie” at the end of that audio but im not entirely sure and dont remember and i dont wanna go back to check lmfao but anyways it didnt matter because i was wrong anyway. after i had finished all 3 walten files i watched the film theory video on the walten files (which didnt cover all 3 but was dece.) out of curiosity and to hear matpats signature silly little voice explain some stuff i already knew, and click some shit in my brain that i couldve thought up of if i was a bit more... i dont know honestly. anyways yeah so the actual audio is “you finally start to remember. that old day. they will look out for you soon.” so yeah. day, not doll.

i then wrote down “sarah evelyn”, the name on the bons sleepover animation (i dont remember if she created it or animated it or whatnot) and scribbled will she matter? under her name. turns out no, as i didnt see her name in the rest of the series, let alone the first video. this is also a great time to mention how matpat theory helped me realize that the walten files are collections of videos, uploaded onto youtube by anthony. (i already knew about anthony as he signed his name in the descriptions of the youtube videos, making me categorize this overall web series more into an arg type genre.) but yes, the tapes, recorded “irl” footage, animated clips, vhs tape recordings and other audio-visual content is all collected and labeled the walten files, as i had mistaken each video to be a tape. stupid me. alrighty, onward!

i jotted down with an arrow that; sophie was a nightguard? she was wearing the uniform explained in tape 2 i dont know why but i went back into my video 1 notes after i had watched video 2. organization purposes. i guess.??

i then paused the video when the screen flickered a date, the beginning of video footage dated 10/10/1982 (Brian Stells?) god my little genius ass assuming the videographer was brian stells, based on the id card i saw earlier.

i then wrote down what text i saw on the dead, mangled, bloody body in the purple security suit; “i cant feel anything” “he thought i was her” then drew a little arrow pointing to; thought brian was sophie? or ashley? i also starred the name Brian Stells this is totally out of order LMFAOOOOOOOO also i wrote down ashley because, again, my little pea brain went back on my video 1 notes after watching video 2. but yep thats all i wrote for The Walten Files 1 - Company Introductory Tape

Wednesday 29 September 2021 – Construction has begun on the £13m redevelopment of the V&A Museum of Childhood, the iconic Grade II* listed site in Bethnal Green, marking a critical milestone in the most ambitious transformation of the museum in its history. A place to play, create, debate and design for tomorrow, this beloved institution is being reimagined into the UK’s premier national museum entirely dedicated to children. Designed with and for 0–14-year-olds, a new name for the museum – Young V&A – is unveiled today, reflecting its new mission to inspire young people with the creative ingenuity of design, to empower educators and to act as a leader in child-centred museum practice.

Director of the V&A, Tristram Hunt, said: “Young people’s lives have been dramatically altered by the pandemic, yet they have adapted and enriched the soul of the nation in extraordinary ways – from a rainbow campaign honouring the NHS to Sky Brown’s skateboarding achievements for Team GB. A world-class museum that nurtures curiosity, experimentation and celebrates play, Young V&A will be a global champion for children’s creativity in all its forms. This vital investment – working to counter the ongoing effects of Covid-19 on young people’s access to creative education, collaborative play, and artistic inspiration – is more urgent than ever. I am delighted we are one step closer to reopening the museum’s doors in 2023.”

New renders revealed today illustrate the latest designs by AOC Architecture for an entirely new visitor experience. The plans include three new galleries Play, Imagine and Design, interactive collection displays drawing on the full scope of the V&A collections, a suite of dedicated workshops for learning, an in-gallery design studio for visitors, and a redesigned visitor experience including a new café and shop.

A host of new acquisitions announced today demonstrate the power of creativity to shape and improve lives, foregrounding Young V&A’s engagement with the social and environmental issues facing young generations, and its inclusive and child-centred approach to programming. Highlights include:

• A skateboard owned by Tokyo 2020 medallist Sky Brown. At 13 years old, Sky is the youngest professional skateboarder in the world and Britain’s youngest-ever Olympics athlete.

• A selection of garments by sustainable fashion designer, humanitarian and artist, Bethany Williams from her Spring / Summer 2021 ‘All Our Children’ collection (2020), featuring illustrations that shine a light on families from the Magpie Project – an east London-based grassroots organisation that supports women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness – and silhouettes inspired by the V&A’s National Childhood Collection.

• The world’s most affordable multi-grip prosthetic arm – The Hero Arm. Designed for children and adults, The Hero Arm challenges traditional notions of prosthetics, presenting disabilities as superpowers with an empowering, multi-functional and affordable design.

• A selection of linocut ‘Woodism’ prints, a moving project between father and son –Sonny and eight-year-old Woody who is autistic. Sonny turns Woody’s unique phrases and way of viewing the world into linocut prints. The creative process gives both a chance to connect as they work together on designs and has given Woody a newfound confidence.

Sky Brown said: “When kids skate, they forget about what they might be struggling through, and just think about happiness. I hope that when people see me, the smallest girl, doing the highest trick, that they think they can do anything, too. I’m so excited that my skateboard will go on show at Young V&A and love the idea of a museum that only exists to inspire young people and help them discover their superpowers. The sky is the limit!”

A new home for the National Childhood Collection

Work completed earlier this year on cataloguing, conserving and packing objects from the National Childhood Collection, previously stored below ground at the museum, and will now move to V&A East Storehouse, which opens in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2024. The collection comprises over 33,000 objects from miniature dolls house furniture to a four-metre-high sixteenth century Italian Marionette theatre. Its relocation enables almost half of Young V&A’s back-of-house space to be repurposed into the new learning workshops and new spaces for conservation and exhibition preparation.

Architectural Update

De Matos Ryan architects were appointed in early 2018 to develop full base build design, including structural changes, heritage restoration, lighting and acoustic upgrades and delivery of a new suite of new workshop spaces. Construction is now underway with handover of the site to Quinn London contractors in August 2021. In parallel, AOC Architecture – the design team responsible for the fit-out – are completing final detailed drawings for construction tender in early autumn.

Creative education spaces for hands-on making and performance will play a key role in Young V&A’s new galleries, from an amphitheatre-style stage in Imagine, to a free-play construction area within Play, and a working Open Studio in Design, inviting young visitors to develop their creative skills through performance, play and design. Alongside this, three workshop spaces dedicated to learning, and a reading room in the lower ground floor, will support a year-round programme from parenting courses and sessions for early years, curriculum-based provision for school learners in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and after school and holiday activity for families and young people.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility have been fundamental to the development including reuse of materials across the project from demolition rubble to repurposed elements of past V&A exhibitions. Free-standing display cases that could not be reused have been donated to museums and galleries across the country including the National Motor Museum and Poldark Tin Mine Heritage site, with the remainder to be reused within the new scheme, with all other display cases fully recycled.

Working in partnership with young people

Local schools and organisations in Tower Hamlets have worked closely with the Young V&A team since the project’s inception, with over 40 co-design workshops and two Kids Takeover Days organised to-date. Continuing this work, each gallery will house one co-creation project, bringing the voices of children and young people into the exhibits to explore ideas around community, sustainable fashion and family play.

A newly launched Young V&A Collective brings together groups of 11-14 year olds to build skills as they develop creative responses to the themes and collections of the new museum, supported by artist-mentors who will co-create new artworks with them. This autumn, artist Dan Mayfield of School of Noise is working with the Collective to make audio tracks and interpret the new exhibits.

During construction, the Young Collective is taking place in partnership with Poplar’s youth space, Spotlight, with termly opportunities for new groups of 11-14s to join. In-person activity resumed this summer as part of the museum’s ‘Summer of Play’ – taking Young V&A’s learning practitioners out across East London from Tower Hamlets to Walthamstow to reconnect with audiences and create shared spaces for play.

In the lead-up to reopening, and to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the V&A in Bethnal Green in 2022, the Young V&A team will be engaging every school in Tower Hamlets – offering creative assemblies, running workshops with students, teacher forums, and developing new activities for families with grassroots local organisations. These sessions will be designed to give young people the opportunity to generate hundreds of ideas inspired by the themes within the new galleries, particularly addressing challenges and opportunities for their generation, demonstrating the creative prowess of ‘Gen Alpha’ to harness their imaginations to make their world a better place for all.

The museum is also building its offer for creative professionals and will establish a Young V&A Designer in Residence in 2022. The resident designer will use the Young V&A collections and gallery themes to inspire their practice and to undertake research into child-centred, inclusive design processes, informing the museum’s thinking and future programmes. The call out for the Residency will go live on 6 October 2021.

Dr Helen Charman, V&A Director of Learning, National Programmes and Young V&A, said: “Reinvention is woven into the fabric of this incredible building, from the iconic ironwork structure, part of the original Great Exhibition in 1851 to its rebranding in 1974, in recognition of the museum’s popularity with local schools and families – and it has rightly won over a special place in the hearts of many east Londoners, many of whom have visited as children, then as parents and grandchildren. Today, we mark a momentous milestone in the evolution of its identity and underscore its core purpose – to champion, nurture, and inspire the innovators of tomorrow and build creative confidence in the young. We can’t wait to reopen the doors.”

There is SUCH an autism martyr complex behind some of these posts.

There’s also a lot of condescension.

When “autism parents,” bad organizations, and the like say that we are completely pure/innocent/naive/etc,. there is SO MUCH condescension behind it. To autistic people who know about this sort of thing, because I know there are autistic people who are still sort of learning about these things especially teens who are autistic, calling us those things is a stab in the back because it makes us feel like we’re not being taken seriously. It makes us feel incompetent.

Btw you noticed how I added miracles into that? I’m wondering what results pop up if I type in “autistic people are miracles” into Twitter.

A Movie Snob Predicts the Oscars - 2017 Edition

Hello again! Welcome to the 2017 edition of A Movie Snob Predicts the Oscars.

As I have been preparing to write this, I’ve been going back over the list of nominees and I noticed a few themes in the films across categories… from overcoming adversity in Hidden Figures and Hacksaw Ridge. to complicated families in Fences. Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea. But the theme I found the most compelling is that of refugees fleeing war torn countries to find a better life for their children in several documentaries, 4.1 Miles, The White Helmets, Fire at Sea and to some extent, Ennemis Interieurs. The Academy was certainly trying to shine a bright light on this global issue and I hope the nominations brought more viewers to hear these stories.

While many of the films were heavy in subject matter, there were a few bright spots as well with small movies like Captain Fantastic, A Man Called Ove, La Femme et la TGV and the not so small and much beloved La La Land.

I typically wrestle with the films I personally enjoyed the most vs those which I believe will actually win. … because, let’s face it, I like being right. This year, I feel like the Academy and I will be pretty well lined up in that regard.

And as the whitest white girl ever, I can’t claim that the diversity issue from past years has been resolved, but this year feels like a step in the right direction.

So, without further ado, here are my picks for the 89th Annual Academy Awards.

Best Picture

Arrival – A film about aliens who land on earth and the linguists who attempt to communicate with them. I found the concept to be interesting, but I could have done without the whole “special powers” thing that Amy Adams’ character experienced. Not a favorite.

Fences – Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, it was one of this year’s best. Solid performances all around and full of flawed characters and quick dialog.

Hacksaw Ridge – A lot of people who saw this one before I did raved about it. Maybe my expectations going in were too high but I personally did not love it. I agree that this man’s story is miraculous and he’s a true hero. I’m glad his story has been told, but this is not my choice for Best Picture. And who casts Vince Vaughn as a drill sergeant?? Seriously?

Hell or High Water – The Dude, Chris Pine, Ben Foster… some bank robberies and lots of dirt. Good flick, but not the best in this bunch. See it though. I liked it.

Hidden Figures – this is another story I’m glad was told. I had no idea that these women had a hand in getting our space program off the ground. I thoroughly enjoyed it but I don’t think it’s the best.

La La Land – Hands down my favorite movie I’ve seen in years. I’m not typically one for glossy romances, let alone musicals, but this movie is pure magic. It was shot in Cinemascope and from the opening sequence, it had me. This is a throwback to the old Hollywood that made me fall in love with movies. And yes, I actually loved the singing and dancing and even the mushy stuff. This year I will not agonize about my favorite vs. the critical darling because they are one in the same! With all the darkness out there, it was refreshing to have a little light. Anyway.. much more gushing over this one later.

Lion – The amazing true story of a little boy who gets separated from his family in India and adopted by an Australian family. I found this to be more interesting than I expected but it was probably my least favorite of this bunch.

Manchester by the Sea – This is a heartbreaking story of a man who is forced to confront a dark past to care for his nephew after his brother passes away unexpectedly. This is slow and sad and looks at how people deal with loss and grief. This is one I had to reflect upon a bit. Initially, I was not a fan, but it’s not meant to be the “feel good movie of the year” and it accomplishes what it sets out to do.

Moonlight – this is one I saw almost as soon as it came out, not knowing anything at all about it. I went in with no expectations and left pleasantly surprised. Again, not a “feel good” movie, but one that tells the story of a boy, growing up in a drug infested community with a mother who is an addict and a drug dealer as his role model. and father figure. It follows him through three stages in his life and the internal conflict he experiences as he learns who he is. See it.

Actress:

Isabelle Huppert – Elle – I wasn’t able to see this movie… it’s not available anywhere yet in the States, but she did win the Golden Globe so I think she has a shot.

Ruth Negga – Loving – Good movie… I’m surprised it didn’t get more nominations.

Natalie Portman – Jackie – I think she was good in this, but I found the character to be super annoying. I realize she was playing a real person… so maybe that means I would have found Jackie Kennedy to be super annoying? Anyway, not my favorite.

Emma Stone – La La Land – She’s my pick. Singing and dancing and being vulnerable in that way made me love her.

Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins – She can do no wrong… we all know this.

Supporting Actress:

Viola Davis – Fences – Hands down, no brainer, this is her night. She was AMAZING. She put Denzel in his place like her life depended on it. She will win and if she doesn’t it will be a travesty!

Naomi Harris – Moonlight – She was great as the crack addicted mother in this film. I also saw an interview with her later and realized she’s not American… accent was spot on. I would never had guessed!

Nicole Kidman – Lion – I’m not sure why she’s in this bunch. I like her, but I don’t get it this year.

Octavia Spenser – Hidden Figures – Another great performance from her, but Viola kicked her butt this go round.

Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea – I don’t think she got enough screen time to warrant a nomination. Sure, she was good when we saw her, but she didn’t make a huge impression for me.

Actor:

Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea – He gave a heart wrenching performance of an incredibly complicated character. It was more nuanced, less in your face than the other front runner and that is my reason for going with him. He gets my vote but I’ve read that there have been some recent harassment suits brought against him that may cause him to lose votes.

Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge – nope.

Ryan Gosling – La La Land – I don’t think he will win, but I need to say that he proved to be more than a pretty face (and perfect abs, etc, etc). He sang. He danced. And as I was leaving the theater, I immediately looked up whether or not he played his own piano to find that HE DID! I find that to be incredibly impressive. And can we talk about his speech at the Golden Globes where he thanked his lady for being home raising their daughters while he was making this movie? Love him.

Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic – I had no idea what this movie was until it was nominated and I really, really liked it. He plays a single father, living off the grid with his six children. I know that sounds riveting, but it was surprisingly sweet and funny and entertaining. I recommend it.

Denzel Washington – Fences – If Affleck doesn’t take it, it’s got to go to Denzel. He’s Denzel. And delivering those lines had to have been one hell of a challenge. Someone i feel it must be “easier” to be bold and boastful as he was in this performance vs quiet and subdued as Affleck was.

Supporting Actor:

Mahershala Ali – Moonlight – He’s my favorite to win. He’s that character you’re not supposed to like by the nature of what he does, but you find out that he’s a compassionate guy doing what he had to in order to survive.

Jeff Bridges – Hell of High Water – He’s THE DUDE! No other explanation necessary … you know that means he is, and always will be, awesome.

Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea – He’s the teenager dealing with the loss of his father and an uncertain future.

Dev Patel – Lion – He’s the lost Indian boy, all grown up and trying to find his family. I’m not sure who he was “supporting” though... he was the main guy in this movie...

Michael Shannon – Nocturnal Animals – He’s a cop with nothing to lose… (you know you want to read that in the “movie announcer voice”). Anyway, he is a great actor. Does great with creepy and/or crazy characters. This is not his year though. I wish this nomination had gone to his counterpart in this film, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, instead. He played a really good psychopath.

Animated Feature:

Kubo and the Two Strings

Moana – I loved this, and I think it would win if not for Zootopia

Director:

Damien Chazelle – La La Land – yes, yes, yes a thousand times, yes, he should win. He also directed Whiplash (which was amazing… you should see it) and is likely becoming my new favorite director! He’s brave and only 32 years old. I’m looking forward to his long, beautiful, brilliant career!

Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge – I’m just glad he wasn’t IN this movie. And I hold him responsible for the whole “Vince Vaughn as a drill sergeant” thing.

Barry Jenkins – Moonlight

Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea

Denis Villeneuve – Arrival

Documentary Feature:

Fire at Sea – about refugees fleeing the African coast for a small Italian island, and the people who rescue them

I am not your Negro

Life, Animated – this is about an autistic boy who grew up relating life to what he learned watching Disney movies. I liked it.

O.J:. Made in America – I think this will win due to its pure scope and scale. It literally goes on for days… (ok… 7 hours and 47 min but that felt like days..) and I did walk away having learned things I didn’t know about him and the murder trial.

The 13th – This is the one I secretly hope will win.

Documentary Short Film:

Extremis – about doctor’s helping terminally ill patients and their families make difficult end of life decisions

4.1 Miles – about Syrian refugee’s fleeing for a small Greek island

Joe’s Violin – about a 92 year old holocaust survivor’s violin which has been passed on to a young music student at a school for immigrant girls in the Bronx. As the one not about the refugee crisis, it stands out, which is why I think it will win.

Watani: My Homeland

The White Helmets - about a group of men, former builders, tailors, blacksmiths, etc, who risk their lives volunteering to save civilians (from either side of the fight) in Aleppo as bombs fall around them. Everyone who believes that we should not allow refugees in to our country should see this movie. I realize that things are more complicated than that, but there is nothing complicated about parents not wanting to have to teach their toddlers the difference between the sound of a regular plane and the sound of one carrying bombs or not wanting to have to dig them out of a pile of concrete that used to be their home or school. I’ve heard the “if it’s so bad, they should leave” argument… but they need a place to go.

City of Stars – La La Land – this is the one I’ve had stuck in my head since I saw the movie. I love it!

Ennemis Interieurs – this is about the interrogation of an Algerian man who has lived in France for years but is trying to gain official citizenship. I hope this doesn’t happen in real life but something tells me it is likely not far off from reality…

La Femme et la TGV-about a woman who lives alongside the tracks of a high speed train and strikes up a friendship with the train operator she’s never met.

Silent Nights – didn’t love it.

Sing – about a girl who wants to join her school choir and a teacher who is hell bent on them winning a competition. I really liked this one too.
