Paving the path for future innovation, Vivienne Westwood’s AW90 “Portrait” ready-to-wear collection was a homage to her love for The Wallace Collection. Found near Regent’s Park, The Wallace Collection is an art museum in London that features a plethora of 18th and 19th century paintings. These paintings are typically of a Baroque and Rococo style, with artists such as Peter Paul Reubens and Frans Hals having their work displayed there.

Homogenous to most Westwood collections, the references found in this season were rich and decorated to the maximum. When we think about someone taking inspiration, it is usually associated with taking one prominent feature and putting your own twist on it. Westwood uniquely used practically every feature of the paintings she was inspired by. The colouring was particular, and the fabrics were selected in a calculated manner so they would be consistent with the luxurious feeling of the paintings.

This season saw Westwood’s first use of a painting on clothing, which is one of the many things that makes it so pivotal in her career. She printed the 1700’s painting “Daphnis and Chloe” by François Boucher (4th slide) on a series of garments, most notably on a corset (3rd slide). This concept was held in such a high regard by critics and fans that she continued to use and reinvent it in future seasons, this took effect in merely one season and was seen as soon as her SS91 collection!

Vivienne Westwood is one of the largest figures in fashion, whether it be through her work with Malcom McLaren, her work with tartan fabric, or her pretty and creative jewellery. She has never seized to amaze me with her creations, along with museums. Her work is comparable to that of Issey Miyake in collaboration with Aya Takano, in other words it’s arguably wearable art. Multiple pieces from this collection can be found online via the V&A museum, further proving the aesthetic value and cultural significance of her creations.
