Thank you to everyone in the tags of that meme post saying that you don’t try to harm bugs despite your phobia. I genuinely appreciate you and want you to know this 💗💗💗

I truly believe that most animal fears can be lessened, if not eradicated almost entirely, through careful and controlled exposure. As such, social platforms which present often stigmatized arthropods in a positive light are invaluable resources. As with all the bug-focused accounts here, I hope to provide this positive exposure to insects and spiders through posts showing off their fascinating variety and behaviours. I also can’t recommend enough the following subreddits: r/spiderbro, r/spiders, r/weeviltime, r/awwnverts, and r/insects, all of which contain communities of passionate, knowledgable, and kind people who adore the bugs they post about. Offline, just keeping a careful eye for any arthropods around, and then maintaining a safe distance to merely observe them, perhaps with another person for support, can do a lot to aid the exaggerated perception of their harm.

What doesn’t and will never ever help is willful ignorance

As someone studying to be a biologist, understanding nature is my life’s passion, and I wish for nothing more than to see people express the same love and dedication and help others reach this point. Thus, I find it important to emphasize that we should work to examine our biases towards certain organisms, particularly arthropods like insects and spiders, when ecologically, it is not only unwarranted but is plain harmful. Any extended time spent around arthropods would reveal, at the very least, they can display behaviours only explainable by a level of cognitive prowess, even if in very different ways that we have yet to fully understand. Truly, it is clear that the tiny inhabit a world amongst themselves, and despite our continual attempts to separate our own world from natural influence, we still depend on their existences much like any other macro-species on Earth**. We are all fundamental parts of ecological systems, we all matter, and we all deserve respect, even if just for the fact we are here, alive, in a world with an infinitesimal chance of even existing with such astounding complexity.

In all, just from the bottom of my heart, I hope everyone will grow to appreciate all the incredible walks of life we co-exist with, especially the many who inhabit the unnoticed ground below our feet, the unremarkable cracks in walls and windows, and unattended corners of rooms and containers.
