Gai loves using pet names. He calls Kakashi all manner of things when they’re in private together (if you’ve read my fics - among his favorites are “dear heart” and “precious thing.”) He also knows that Kakashi likes them, but gets a little embarrassed when he is called them in public, so he sticks to “rival,” which he considers to be their first pet name anyway.

Kakashi seldom uses pet names for Gai. When he does, he’ll keep it simple and usually just call him “love,” or sometimes if he’s feeling romantic, “darling man.” He saves “rival” for special occasions or when he wants to get a rise out of Gai - he loves how red his face gets when he whispers it to him in bed or even out in public after a sly innuendo. (He particularly likes to use it during a challenge to throw him off guard, which Gai insists is cheating).

Gai sometimes gets really awful phantom pains in his body, especially in the winter months. He’ll wake up in the middle of the night immobilized by these episodes, unable to speak or ask for help, unable to soothe himself, unable to move, while Kakashi sleeps next to him unaware. Gai is terrified by this, because it often feels like he’s going to die and he’s afraid he will one day and won’t be able to say goodbye to Kakashi (this is a big fear of his, anyway). But he doesn’t tell Kakashi when this happens. In the morning he’s groggy and sore and will chalk it up to “a bad night,” but he fears if he says anything about it, Kakashi will worry. It’s the only thing he hides from him.

Kakashi witnessed Gai’s phantom pain only once, when they were early in his recovery and still learning to navigate his healing. His entire body seized, he gasped in little hiccuped breaths, his body trembled and tensed so hard Kakashi was worried he’d pop blood vessels or rip his tendons. He didn’t know what to do, nothing seemed to work. Gai had told him afterward that there was nothing he could do, that really he could only wait until it passed. Kakashi had been terrified; Gai looked horrible, trapped in his body he once trusted now betraying him at will. He’d felt so useless to that horror, wounded that he couldn’t take his pain away. They cried long and hard together afterward, and though he’d never witnessed another episode again, Kakashi knows it happens. He feels guilty for this, but part of him is glad Gai doesn’t seem to have them in his presence. He hates to feel this way, but seeing him in so much pain is more than he can bear.

Kakashi and Gai still keep their own apartments all the way up until after Gai awakens from the aftermath of the eight gates. It’s Kakashi’s idea that they live together - he was admittedly fearful of not having his own space, so used to living alone for so long, and being so particular with his space and his things. He also felt a little skittish around the kind of commitment it took to live with someone. But he realizes quickly these things are trivial - almost losing Gai makes him realize Kakashi doesn’t care about anything as much as being with him.

Gai and Kakashi disagree on when they became “official.” Kakashi has a specific time in mind - shortly after he is dispatched from ANBU, when he kissed Gai for the first time with intention. Gai considers their relationship to be “transcendent” of any time frame - he insists he and Kakashi were always destined to be together, and as such, they always have been. There is no start date for him, he doesn’t pin it down. For him, Kakashi has always had his heart. Kakashi won’t admit this very readily but he can’t think of this without getting a little choked up. And he won’t argue the point either, because secretly, he knows Gai’s right.

Ngl I'm just beyond disappointed that anyone in that dev team thought cutting this was a good idea. Especially when we know they went out of their way to add in a someone who wasn't put in this game as a companion and wasn't intended to be one initially, while Ketheric was, even more so because of how half baked it was. I'm baffled and gutted that this was worth keeping to them, while Ketheric, who is far more plot significant, was not.

You can still play up to getting to persuade him which was where he was meant to join you and idk why the fuck they left that in then.

I honestly wish they would stop fucking talking about what they cut now that they've abandoned the game.

Another strange thing happened today. I'm not sure if I, uh, imagined it?

So like... I have villagers around now, is the thing, maybe I should start with that. You know how villagers are. I rescued them from the vault, and at first, besides the fact they let me carry them, I thought, uh. Well. Villagers, right? Probably - but they aren't... right. I don't know. I'll uh... get back to you all on that. There's just something...

Anyway, that means I have iron production, and food, and also enchantments, which is good, because I wasn't entirely certain I could get an enchanting table out, uh. Easily. They aren't uncommon, I guess? Like, uh, they're around gilded chests a lot. In fact they're a good way to spot... anyway, the enchantments mean that I have stuff that doesn't break as easily, which is good, because...

So like... uh, after. I didn't meant to attach - you know, last time. I'm feeling better since last time. My island is noisier now. More crowded. You know, what with the village. But - I mean, I didn't - I know I can attach images now, though, so I can... I have a bunch of strange gear. It is far stronger than any armor I have ever worn, and the shield is strange and slows down my enemies. It makes me feel safer in vaults, though.

I'm dying a lot less. That's not the strange - okay. I said I'd explain the strange thing, right?

I saw a cat.

I mean, uh. I guess that's not that weird, right? Especially since I panicked, went to go try to figure out how to get fish in the middle of the void, and by the time I got back, it was gone. But uh... I mean... I don't know, man. I keep on thinking about the cat. I keep on thinking maybe, if a cat showed up, uh, something... something else might? Not just a cat. But even just another cat.

I, uh - I mean, cats don't always, uh... they sense something off about me. I guess, haha, the way I sense something off about... but cats don't always like me, but that doesn't mean -

If I see a cat again I'm naming it Boots, I think. I might not see a cat again. I don't know. It left.

But honestly, between the coconut - uh, that'll make more sense with the picture, I don't - I mean it makes sense to call it a coconut but - you know. Between the coconut and seeing a cat for a moment, I feel more at-ease. More like I know what I'm doing. And it's odd, right? Because I lost the cat. I didn't get to keep it.

I saw it though.

And I mean, uh. Outside of villagers, falling squid, and the box of glow squid I made, most of the things I've seen for a while have been trying to kill me?

Not the cat though.

...you know, there are four types of altars in the vaults. I wonder which one I should thank for the cat, or which one I can ask to try to get me another one. It was cute, you know! I uh... I wouldn't mind...

it's funny bc, i was thinking about that letter baby peter capaldi wrote about wanting to be an actor to help the doctor when he got older, and how when he was the doctor they dug it up again.

Then I thought how, it's unlikely anybody born somewhere between like 85-95 would ever have that happen to them bc said sentiments would probably have been posted online when tweens or teens, and people born between said years were taught the dangers of the internet and would have been conscious of anonymity.

Then i thought how, people born after that in the years of facebook's normalisation campaign to have you put your whole name and face and personal details online means that we've probably sprung right back round to being able to dig up stuff said as children or teenagers and say it on tv.

I know i, on one of my 'you'd never know it was me bc i practiced internet safety' accounts, when i was 14, spoke about loving doctor who on the internet. Was probably obnoxiously 14 and sappy about it. Would bother me if it got out. Account still exists. I could become the next doctor and you'd never know, though.
