no but the moment shardul (Rajkumar Rao's character) puts on the rainbow mask at the end of the movie is such an instrumental moment of just growth and acceptance within and of himself,,, because since the beginning of the movie it's easy to see how hard it is for him to even define/identify himself as a homosexual man and throughout the movie there's a constant conflict of him wanting to live as his most authentic self vs vying for social acceptance both in the contexts of family and career. As a cop he often comes across queer people who are ridiculed and punished and forced to run away,,, but he has to stay there and watch what could happen to him if he ever comes out through the words of the people he's surrounded by and even feels kinship with,,,
the first time he meets guru then,, guru is wearing a rainbow mask at a gay wedding and creating a "ruckus" and "disturbing peace". Shardul on the other hand is there in a professional capacity with his colleagues and is tasked with stopping him from making more of a nuisance out if himself,,, In their first interaction with each other shardul asks him about his masks and whether he's ashamed of himself and that's the reason he's wearing it, to hide which is then followed by him removing his mask.
This marks the way we're supposed to see the mask as not hiding away but accepting a part of oneself and being proud and just accepting of whoever and whatever you identify as,,, moving to the last part of the movie when invited shardul instead chooses to wear the mask as an acknowledgement of himself and his identity and just as a callback to the idea of not being ashamed and just,,, it marks such a big change and growth arc for his character who's seen to be so repressed when concerning his sexuality among family and colleagues
and the fact that he then chooses to click pictures with the aforementioned colleagues is just- cherry on top 🫶🏽🤌🏼 and i just love how he goes from being unable to voice it out loud, to coming out to his family (willingly mind you), to accepting and acknowledging it infront of the people he craves acceptance and respect from (his colleagues but also the society as a whole) and yeah.

Badhaai Do (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Harshavardhan Kulkarni
Stars: Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Gulshan Devaiah...
Language: Hindi
Length: 2h 27m
Shardul Thakur Flaglot and Suman Singh enter into a marriage of convenience but chaos ensues when her unhinged girlfriend comes to stay with them.
Don’t get scared by the movie’s length, it actually passes really fast as it’s pretty dynamic so there’s always something going on. It’s really colourful, I liked the whole culture experience you get while watching the movie, so it’s not only an interesting story, but you get more than that and there’s music involved and the acting was good to me. And should I mention the main actor is so handsome? :P The girl is also a sweetheart, very likeable IMO.
I didn’t like how the family kept meddling into their marriage and forcing the tradition on them. There wasn’t too much homophobia, but it was there in a couple of scenes. Despite the comedic approach, it’s still pretty evident the hardships they have to go through in order to live their lives, but it’s not depressing, as it has a happy ending which is much appreciated. I also didn’t like how Shardul expected Suman to clean after him and serve him in the house, but Suman knew how to stand up for herself and Shardul later changed so it got better.
Rating: 4/5

10 Favourite Series/Movies I watched in 2022 (Fave Movie for @asianlgbtnetwork 2022 Recap)
Badhaai Do (dir. Harshavardhan Kulkarni) Genre: Comedy,  Drama Starring:  Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Chum Darang Language: Hindi
Shardul Thakur is a police officer, who is under constant pressure from his family to get married, but he isn't too keen on the idea because he's gay. Sumi works as a PE teacher and is also being pressured by her family to get married but she is lesbian. She goes to the police to make a harrassment case and meets Shardul. When he guesses that Sumi is lesbian, he proposes a plan: they will get married to get their families off their back. Problems arise, though, when their families continue to meddle in their lives and pressure them to have children.
I love a movie that talks about acceptance and realisation and the whole journey that comes with a queer character. So having not 1 but multiple such characters, especially in a desi setting, was really fun to watch. As with bollywood, this had a mix of everything; drama, humour, annoyingly invasive family members and a happy ending. It made me laugh so much, it also made me cry. It was perfect. Enjoyed watching this so much.

Review: Badhaai Do (2022)
Saw "Badhaai Do" (2022) last night. It was fantastic!
It's an Indian film about a gay cop and a lesbian PE teacher who get sham married to appease their intrusive families. And then have to navigate their relationships with each other, their families, and their real lovers. It's a great examination of the closet from a country where it's often still very necessary for survival. And also about the resiliency of queer people and our determination to be true to ourselves.
It's very funny, but it's also poignant and will break your heart and put the pieces back together. Parts of it are painful and scary. But it's also courageous. It has a lot of fierceness and hope and love. It's a deep cultural examination challenging the absurdity of norms.
The ending is very beautiful and not what I was expecting. It fully earns it in a very heartwarming way. That character growth right at the end was genuinely one of the most beautiful things I've seen in film because it was so unexpected.
Content Warnings: this film deals extensively with homophobia both personal and systemic including fear of police. It also centers family pressure for marriage and children. It depicts corporal punishment by police, a stalker using blackmail, misogyny, and a forced outing.

badhaai do is genuinely such a good fucking film because all of the characters feel real and lived rather than caricatures or imitations of people. The queerness of the main characters is central to their identity and the conflict they have within themselves due to the environment they are placed in and it feels right because while they're queer that's not all they're limited to. Not everything in their life can be attributed to their queerness which is something that I feel most queer media are unable to portray well.
There's something about the inherent sweetness and innocence in their queerness which is not because they're not shown having sex or kissing or doing anything vulgar,, rather because they're just normal people living their normal lives and trying to survive in their environments
there is something really cool about all the queer relationships having started "ugly" in a manner of speaking (because spitting, talking and joking about poop, or in a work environment talking with an "inebriated" disturber/trespasser with the intention of running them off or punishing them are not really considered respectable) and evolving into something rather sweet and strong and persisting. It's a reflection of queer experiences that take place even in the ugliest of circumstances to create something so beautiful because it's inherent and being queer is not really a choice. There's also the idea of all of the relationships having occurred in daily life without it being a conscious chasing of that experience which again reflects on the inherent normality of queerness.
This is perhaps the first time I've felt so enriched and nurtured and held by a queer portrayal in Bollywood and I think it should be talked about so much more than it is

I can’t sleep. Let’s talk about the four sacred top fives of 2022 as in top 5 gay movies, top 5 gay tv ships (or shows as whole), top 5 short gay movies and for the next one, let’s change it up a little bit and I’ll provide you with top 5 upcoming gay movies (2023) I’m looking forward to and are currently in the process of pre-production, production or post-production.
Tumblr media
Top 5 Gay Movies of 2022
Tumblr media
5. La Santa Piccola - very different from your usual gay movies, but the scenery is gorgerous and the story made me feel things 4. Badhaai Do - amazing queer representation in Indian Cinema, "gay guy and a lesbian woman enter into holy matrimony to appease their families”... just pure comedy and romance and the friendship is beautiful 3. Fire Island - a classic rom-com, must-see 2. In from the Side - rugby gays, affair, romance... all of that 1. Sublime - since it’s finally available on VoD, I had a chance to watch it this weekend and the soundtrack and story got me... Mi mejor amigo vibes but actually gay
Top 5 Gay Ships/TV Shows of 2022
Tumblr media
5. Heartstopper - a classic, it was honestly hard to rate the shows because they’re all equally brilliant in my eyes 4. Heartbreak High - australian Sex Education, obsessed 3. The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself - magic, witches, gays... c’mon 2. Prisma - very important show 1. Patrick/Iván in Élite - they’re literally everything to me, if you get it you get it, if you don’t you don’t, if you know you know and if you don’t know I honestly feel bad for you like I literally cannot explain it, I don’t have the vocabulary to sit here and explain like either you get the vibe or you don’t
Top 5 Gay Shorts of 2022
Tumblr media
5. Catalina - a queer man and his two childhood best friends reunite for a weekend camping trip on Catalina Island... could there be sumn more? 4. Too Rough - Nick wakes up next to his boyfriend Charlie and must conceal him from his own homophobic and dysfunctional family... very sad 3. Jean est tombé amoureux - two football players of opposite teams falling in love... mm very good! 2. Swim - two swimmers develop a strong friendship during their weekly sessions, but their relationship is tested outside the pool, when true identities are revealed... this one fawked me up good 1. Hard - Mikey experiences awkwardness and struggles to navigate the uncertainties of his sexuality after his first time with a girl doesn't go as expected, forcing him to confront his feelings of desire for his best friend... this was so much fun to watch
Top 5 Upcoming Gay Movies in 2023
Tumblr media
5. The History of Sound - Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor in a gay romance period drama? We’re looking forward to that actually! Anyways, they were supposed to film it this year, but they had busy schedules. Current plan is next year. Also Paul was hanging out with the director last month, so maybe something’s cooking. 4. Glitter & Doom - described as a summer romance musical feature told with the iconic tunes of folk duo Indigo Girls. Film follows a musician who wears charisma as camouflage and a carefree guy about to run away with the circus as they fall in love at first sight. Sounds fun. 3. Nuovo Olimpo - any Ferzan Özpetek fans? Any Manuel from Un professore fans? Well, looks like we won. Period drama set in Italy, following two men who have a chance encounter and then fall deeply in love, and then are torn apart. The film then follows them both over the next decades as they attempt to find each other again. 2. Strangers - yes, another one with Paul Mescal... yes, I’m crazy. And hi Andrew Scott. Directed by Andrew Haigh (Weekend, HBO’s Looking). Word on the street is that their characters will be romantically involved since Mescal's character corresponds to a woman who has a romance with the protagonist (Scott) in the original novel. We will be tuning in. 1. Bonus Track - film set in 2006, follows a small-town boy with dreams of being a gifted musician. When the son of an iconic musical duo enrols at his school, a powerful bond between the boys begins to grow. Based on an original story by Josh O'Connor (yes, him) and Michael Gilbert.
Anyways, that is it. There are a lot of movies that weren’t released THIS year yet, and I’m looking forward to them (Punch, Aristotle and Dante, Spoiler Alert,...). But I would be just repeating myself, so I’m not gonna talk about that.
