What Is: Finding Avalon

Alice is a deserter from a war between two countries that has ravaged over half a continent for a decade. She has no real name and identity due to her army resorting to memory wipes to retain soldiers - the reason why she deserted. Now she and her trusty battlesteed are in search of a rumoured haven called Avalon for deserters like her where she can recover and find peace.

If only it were that easy.

Finding Avalon takes place in a world that was once occupied by the Ryven Dominion, an ancient peaceful civilisation that was so advanced they decided one day to mysteriously up and leave the planet for the stars. For years generations of people after them have been confused by what exactly what these ancient people were.

As a result the world is in a mishmash of varying levels of technology, and somewhere along the way the micro-monarchy nations Arzon and Retrozia decided to genetically engineer dragons, a formerly extinct socially intelligent species, as weapons in an arms race. The culminating result of what ultimately boils down to a sibling rivalry erupted into the decade-long Dragon War, which has continuously escalated and consumed much of the land between them as well as innocent towns, villages and lives caught in the crossfire.

To prevent their soldiers from deserting from the horrors of their deeds, they mandated compulsory memory wiping for the soldiers, the Riders. This is due to the fact that the new 'dragons' are neurally controlled by Riders; an unstable Rider leads to an unstable dragon. Once it was only for serious battles and selective memories; now it's for nearly everything, including as a punishment.

While the common public was shielded from this information by way of carefully produced national propaganda, the scientists involved had a different opinion. Many of them defected, creating the Sky Rogues organisation - a group of people who would design the counter to dragons in the form of airships powered by magitech. But even then inventing weapons to counter dragons - a famous saying among Riders is "the only way to defeat a dragon is another" - is coming along slow. The Council of Nations, which Arzon and Retrozia were part of until their childish spat-turned war, gave up on them except for the Republic of Eredan. Even then the good republic could only spare resources to grant asylum to refugees and deserter Riders alike, and nothing more.

Deserter Riders are not necessarily free even when they desert. The nations send their own bounty hunters to capture them, and very often the sheer overwhelming 'freedom' and most of society treating them as criminals force them to return to their countries to be re-educated (read: memory wiped) because that's all they know. Then the rumour of the deserter Rider haven reached ears of disillusioned soldiers, called Avalon - a place where there is space for everyone and their dragons, where they can rest and heal from the wounds of war.

Thus motivates the soul of an Arzonian Rider called Alice, but after all that you've read above - she has a long way to go before she can find her respite.

Main cast:

Alice Her real name is not Alice, but there's no way she can ever find out due to mandatory memory wipes when she was in the Rider army. Now she wanders across the Silent Wastes with her dragon Sorya in search for clues to point her in the right direction of the Rider refugee haven Avalon. Though she hopes for the rumour to be true, the continent hates Riders universally and the chance of it is so slim she's become pretty jaded because of that.

Rolf (not his full name) A jail warden from a innocent town thought lost to a crossfire in an infamous incident during the war. Though he wakes at night from dreams of sinister shadows overhead and corridors of blazing flames, he holds no ill will towards Alice and ultimately ends up helping her. A young man whose only knowledge of the war is limited to the destruction of his town, but keeps his head up and hopes high despite whatever happens.

Zach Like Alice that's not his real name, and knowing that - and that his fellow soldiers will never have an identity of their own that anyone remembers - caused him to defect. A fresh deserter who nearly got thrown out an airlock for being a Rider, he comes off as grumpy and moody, and extremely nationalist especially towards Alice, who's from the nation opposing his. He struggles to come to terms with being alone and free in a society that hates anyone of his former job.

Jariina Segatta The captain of a experimental Sky Rogues airship, coming off as a no-nonsense, incredibly stern woman. Having lost her town, family and arm to a dragon bombing, she now commandeers the airship and its crew in search of neutralising Riders. Despite having the motivation to hate Riders, she still treats them as people rather than things, which has led to her being the only Sky Rogues captain to have deployed non-lethal ammunition against the Riders.

Varsaraad The Varsaraad is not a person. Nor is it a country, or a creature, or an organisation. It is a giant magitech airship of unknown origin, unknown pilot, unknown allegiances, unknown machinations, unknown motives, that travels across the Silent Wastes, the ravaged land left behind by the War. It travels at ridiculous speeds for any airship of its time, and has a large cannon that obliterates everything it fires upon. No airship of current technology can beat it. Perhaps only a dragon can...
