I try not to let fandom alone sway my thoughts on a character too often, since I prefer to judge a character through… well, the character, and their showing in the actual product(s).

That said, there have been exceptions that are too overwhelming for me to ignore. Usually this relates to characters I already hated in the first place, like Surge, so it's no major loss. But for a more regrettable example… Amy.

Now let me make it clear that "hate" is MUCH too strong a word in this case, since I wouldn't say she's a straight up bad character or wish she'd be removed. I still like the basic concept of her character, and I still appreciate her good portrayals and what she's able to bring to the table.

But for a multitude of reasons - most notably, the one-two fuck you punch of Frontiers and Prime making me realise that the amount of times where I think she's been portrayed legitimately well pale significantly in comparison to how many times they've dropped the ball with her, even compared to other characters - she's unfortunately been losing me all over again. And the fandom's current attitude with her, such as their tendency to defend everything she does when they'd eviscerate her if it were any other character, their tendency to break their own rules in order to give Amy preferential treatment ("Respect the ordinary girl!… but plz let her go Super and be more powerful than Knuckles and Tails combined and one-shot Eggman's strongest robot and beat the entire cast in a fight tee hee"), their tendency to spark #Rally4Sally-style hysteria every single time she's not in something, and rabid Sonamy fans… acting like rabid Sonamy fans, has only amplified this.

Maybe the tide will turn yet again if she gets a string of better, less eyeroll-worthy portrayals in the future. But for now, when taking her overall history into account, I've come to the regretful conclusion that she's arguably the most overrated of the recurring game cast at this point in time, and ultimately the fanatic sides of her fandom are no different to that of Sally's.

There's also Silver. Like with Amy, "hate" is an exaggeration, but it's no secret that I've never found him that interesting, whether in his canon game form or the flanderized penis hour mood that Evan Stanley loves to turn him into. But in the distant past, I had frequent encounters with fans who would lash out at me if I said so much as a single negative thing about him. Needless to say, this did not raise my enthusiasm for the character.

Finally, the Freedom Fighters. On their own, they're probably not the worst conceptually, even if Sonic being a member himself doesn't work and goes against his character. But they are so hyped up the ass and touted as being infinitely superior to the game cast that I can't muster any goodwill for them anymore. This only increased after I was reminded of just how often they made massive dick moves in Archie, and how they rarely got called out on it in any meaningful capacity. So even putting their fandom aside, they're kinda hard for me to like anymore.

Obligatory mention of Black Doom for being the Best Shit Villain, compared to Mephiles and all the other ones who are inexplicably popular. Black Doom was the key to all this, so I'm glad they got him working, cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had. He's stylistically designed to be that way. (Jokes aside, how sad is it that even with my unironic goggles on, there have been so many shit villains in this franchise that Doom isn't even in the top ten worst at this point?)

For a more sincere example, we have Marine. Everyone had a hateboner for her at the time, and some people still do (one of them being Flynn apparently), but I never found her annoying. I understood the development they intended for her, and I thought it was handled decently for the most part. I also scratched my head at the flack she received for her Australian accent and lingo, since I never saw anyone complain about Bunnie and Antoine's stereotypical Texan-ness and French-ness respectively… oh, right, they're Freedom Fighters, so they can get away with it. -_-

Then there's Elise, who was just underdeveloped at worst (that and having a realistic human design, but that wasn't exclusive to her), and did not deserve the vitriol that she ended up getting. As far as non-Blaze princesses go, I actually prefer her over Sally at this point, because Elise doesn't have an extended history of being an unreasonable prick to Sonic for bullshit reasons, and never tried to change him either. That Elise was the one in '06 who got labeled as the worst character of all time, when a literal recolor was standing right there, was one of the early indications to me that this fandom might not always have the most agreeable takes.

She's not outright hated like Elise is (was?), but since she has a similar dynamic with Sonic, I'll mention Shahra as well. I used to think she was a bit bland outside of her relationship with Majin Ganondorf, and I expressed that opinion even quite recently. But in the past month or so, in light of how much I've grown to either hate or be disillusioned with certain other characters, I'm beginning to appreciate her non-abusive partner-related traits a lot more now, and her bond with Sonic is admittedly sweet. The Sonic Likes Tall Girls meme we have going on may have also contributed. Secret Rings is still by no means a game I care much for outside of its villain and some level aesthetics, but Shahra is a good character in retrospect IMO.

And I share your appreciation for Infinite and Zor. I approve of the intent with Infinite's character and think it was handled well despite some rushed aspects, and fail to understand why people single him out for being one-note when this franchise is stacked with one-note villains, and Zor's lines are genuinely hilarious and I will die on that hill. The latter's transformation into Unironic Generic Edgy Guy #6 in IDW was devastating for me. :(

Rouge being more than who she is at first glance. As in, someone who is deceptively intelligent, more caring than she lets on, and will ultimately do the right thing despite her jewel thievery hijinks. AKA, not a villain.

The Hard-Boiled Heavies. They were rightly beloved come their debut, but ever since Mania came and went (and not counting their appearance in Seasons of Chaos that I'd prefer to forget), it's like fans collectively forgot about them. I'll say it till the cows come home: they had more personality in a game without dialogue than Sage did in a game with it.

Darkspine Sonic. It does have its fans, but it tends to get overshadowed by the lame as fuck Dark Super Sonic from X, and the equally lame as fuck Fleetway Super Sonic. I may not love Darkspine per say, but as far as dark forms go, I can recognize the thought that was put into it, and I appreciate that it allows Sonic to utilize his feelings in a positive way via keeping his rage focused on the guy who deserves it. This is much more in-tune with Sonic's character than a generic evil form would be, and it also avoids the unhealthy and unrealistic implications that anger, sadness, etc is inherently a bad thing that must be dismissed or concealed at all costs.

The Advance trilogy's soundtracks. Yeah, they get their kudos, but still not enough. >:[ I consider these compressed GBA ditties to be among Sonic's best, and find them more memorable and impactful than many a generic orchestral soundtrack you hear in plenty of games nowadays.

In light of Grass Simulator 2022, Sonic having an actual aesthetic of any sort. Other games did this so well, including CD, the Genesis and Advance trilogies, Mania, SA1, Heroes, Colours, Secret Rings, the Riders games, some of SA2, some of ShtH, even 3D Blast of all games. You can have all the technical graphic detail you want, but in the end, a plain grassy field does not fill me with inspired wonder in the same way as environments like Studiopolis, Night Palace, Red Mountain, Quartz Quadrant, or Twinkle Snow.

lmao the funniest part is, sun mostly gets to decorate for the puppet shows because small things are the easiest to make, but most kids aren’t into them half the time bc they want to play or w/e so he doesn’t get to do them as often as he’d like. so having cress and flare around would be a great way for him to get out that creative spirit for once! (plus they’re super stoked by the attention so it’s a positive feedback loop of affection lmao)

sun’s a big fan of bouncy, high-intensity music, but he’s especially fond of electropop and hyperpop! he’s not as fond of slow music, and he doesn’t like anything with crude language or super negative lyrics

moon’s super into anything with strong lyrics because he likes to sing along and make a whole production out of it, so he gets bored easily during heavy instrumental music but has a lot of fun with fast-paced, lyric-heavy things like rap and story albums.

eclipse doesn’t really “get” music, so he doesn’t really have much of a preference! mostly he just gravitates towards whatever his siblings like lmao

alex is a bit of a wild card cuz they also don’t have strong opinions for or against most things, so their playlists tend to be pretty eclectic! emo rock and dark metal are their guilty pleasures, tho.

Now, there are legitimate reasons for some kids being unable to go home. Abuse being major reason, but the largest factor for children being put into the system is the various effects of poverty.

People having kids that they do not have the money to care for. There are a lot of reasons for there being so many people who cannot afford to have chidren, but namely that if production kept pace with inflation, minim wage should be somewhere in the range of $20 per hour and regrettably it's currently $7.25.

As a country we do already have those resources ($$) available. We just give them to the people that get the kids after the state removes them, not to the parents.

Why?

Again, a complicated issue but also, the bootstraps mentality baked unto the very fabric of American culture means that the idea of just giving poor people money must not even be considered.

To them it's better to give the kids to strangers who have money so they are good so they can care for the kids than to help the kids actual parents out of poverty because poor people are poor because they are bad.

That is fucked up. The way we handle foster care is fucked up. The way we think about poor people and poverty is fucked up.

As a country we need to work on things that are fucked up, like this.

Whether I ship it or not

After a fashion! I like it well enough that I had it as an aspect of the fic I was writing a while back, but it's not, like, a main draw for me or even the focus of that fic.

Why I ship it or not

I say 'after a fashion' because I'm not really invested in relationships between teenagers anymore, like, I can't relate to that (not that I could relate to much romance when I was a teenager, honestly). But I think the relationship between them is a major aspect of both the anime and the manga that it's easy to focus on it when writing about or for Akira, whether you interpret that romantically or platonically.

My opinion on their canon potential

Like most media I have hyperfixated on in the past it is regrettably heterosexual, but I think they have that potential to fit the friends to enemies to boyfriends pattern with way, way more violence. And some gays do like fucked up and complicated kinds of relationships, which I think they have by nature of them just being who they are and their surrounding circumstances. There's potential, I think, even for a better friendship between them, but part of the tragedy of the narrative is the ways that they fail to reach a better understanding of one another regardless of that potential. I think the ways in which Tetsuo greatly misunderstood their friendship is what makes the ending such a big gut punch for me. In another world - or even in an alternate course of events - they could have avoided all this conflicted or mitigated it, but the problem is that they come to these conclusions too late to change anything.

My opinion on the fanon interpretations

I haven't delved into the fandom in a long time so I'm not really sure what fanon is saying at the moment or what's popular, but I am glad I haven't seen nearly as much, uh... woobification? uwu-ing? the characters. They're both very much bastard and products of their environment. Though I will say that the last time I did look on the AO3 page there was just a real lack of fic in general and I've yet to be in a fandom that didn't have at least some form of Alternate Universe for levity's sake. But then I also stay away from fandom sometimes when I have strong opinions and I want to keep my cool about things, so there's that!

Ethics Hinder My Writing

    Five years ago, I created a report at Sundstrand and uncovered issues with our product. My boss asked me to change the conclusions, and I refused. He was fantastic, and upper management goals directed his choices. What about my coworkers? They said, “It’s what the boss wants. Just do it.”

    The incident conflicted me. It was a minor lie, but my core personality hated lying. Before choosing to have a coworker submit the report, I considered quitting. Looking back, the whole thing was a minor fudge because of unrealistic requirements, and I should have been less rigid. Yet, the incident still simmers in the back of my bonkers mind.

    I recently discussed the incident with a friend, which inspired me to think about my ethics. I came to an unexpected conclusion: I am a deeply ethical person. I thought my ethics were ordinary or perhaps a little below average. Sure, I do not steal or abuse people, but that is the baseline. I am not a saint, and there are people I know with higher ethics. However, my self-evaluation revealed that I have a higher sense of ethics than my peers.

    I think it is a good thing to have high ethics. Society needs responsible people, and I am a trusted friend. Yet, high ethics presents a problem with my writing.

    My good characters have strong morals, and the bad ones, meaning that even the bad ones have distinct ethical lines they never cross. A child abuser? Not in my book. Why? I feel it is essential for readers to connect with the bad characters as if they could be bad people in their own lives. The core of my problem is that I cannot make the bad character too bad, and the good character must be outstanding. For example, no character would ever use a racial slur. Yet, I know such terms are essential for authors to rouse the reader. They show ignorance and a lack of respect. And let’s not forget that a character/real person can use racial slurs and learn they are wrong. While true, I will never use such terms in life or writings.

    Such ethical choices limit the story’s dynamic range and prevent me from ever creating an anti-hero. So, how do I write within my ethics? I mentally set a plotline and subject limit. This choice excludes horror stories where characters are poorly treated for the sake of being mistreated. My evil characters need a reason to be awful; they cannot simply be appalling. So, my villains never benefit from poor behavior.

    Can I tell myself that writing is just fantasy? Go ahead, write a raw, gritty, and unsavory story. Readers will understand; they know the definition of fiction. The “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” author has killed; they only wrote a fictional story. This kind of story is a bridge too far for somebody like me. However, I appreciate stories that break ethical grounds, such as the Deadpool and Mad Max franchises.

    Does this mean that my books will always be limited? Regrettably, yes. A large portion of literature and character types will be off-limits to me. Is this bad? Skilled writers challenge themselves to develop fantastic plots. They apply shock value and add excessive aggression to get readers out of their comfort zone. I know what my writing could be, but I have to live with myself. Mid-September is the strange time of year when we’re stuck with a quite limited sample where each has dramatically less of an effect.  We get one comfortably sweet result to accompany that rather bitter one.  The example poll will be down to one-third during the next game and so forth.

An upward trend brings value even if the wins are worth the same.  Students hope professors recognize progress over the semester’s course and weighs recent grades more heavily than when you were clueless at the semester’s opening.

There’s a tradeoff to time advancing that it turns out is unavoidable by current understandings of physics.  Each game played of course means fewer chances left to influence the overall makeup.  Followers are trying not to fret too much after experiencing two tries.  At the same time, you may have heard how few teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-2 during the 14-team tournament era, namely one team.

An infinitely more welcome result offers distractions from other hassles, including getting to the stadium itself.  The short-term aggravation of having nowhere to store cars is part of the tradeoff with forcing taxpayers forced to fund another stadium in a remote location.  Well, that’s not a super deal.

Realizing in reality what a horrid decision repeating the stadium mistake has become was just the week’s unpleasant start.  A Bills-employed reporter thought this would be the perfect week to criticize the team’s best and most sensitive receiver.  The team worker has disappeared like Kelvin Benjamin. But at least there was a good result on the field to cancel out off-the-field drama.  Football is about the people within the stadium, whether they’re competing or enjoying.  It’d be nice to have a closer place paid for by the owner.  But methodical domination after a shaky start is welcome occurrence no matter what’s around.

Soulmates: Chapter IV

AN: Some parts are small. This is one of them. I’m finding it helps to keep the story moving fast-paced. The majority of updates are 1-1.5K words, or around 10-15 minutes of reading time.

One in the morning.

Kara tossed and turned just like she always did.

Her phone rang. She picked it up without thinking, half-assuming it was her sister. Kara was a few hours ahead. Alex would have been finishing her on-call shift and just seeing the onslaught of text messages. It made sense.  

“Mhm?” She rubbed bleary eyes.

“Tomorrow evening, seven o’clock.” Cat was nondescript. “Turns out John lost his life savings on the LexCorp IPO last year. It regrettably influenced his line of questioning. Well. To make a long story short, John has now lost his job too.” It was never a long story with Catherine Grant. “I smoothed things as much as they can be smoothed. She was understandably upset but Lena Luthor was quite clear that she would only redo the interview with you. Seven o‘clock, tomorrow evening.”

“Oh.” Kara blinked and sat up straight out of bed. “I…still have a job?”

“Better than a job, Kara, you now have two”—It didn’t go amiss on Kara that she had finally earned her name—“Assuming you’re interested and you do a good job tomorrow. You can expect more reporting assignments while John’s position is being filled. You have...the right amenable, Labrador-ish demeanour for fielding. It will be good experience for you. I imagine such assignments might even lend opportunities for those darling, fanciful social media updates that give some illusion of a very… Anna Delvey existence for your cowboy friends back home.”

“Miss Grant, thank you. I promise, I give you my word, I will not let you down.”

“Get some rest.” There was a softness in her voice, almost. “You should work from home tomorrow, Kara, it’s no small feat for a journalist’s first job to be an interview with Lena Luthor.”

“Wait.” Kara blinked. “I’m…asking her the questions?”

All of a sudden, Kara felt that warm sensation spread on the proximate part of her hip again, right where her birthmark sat on top.

“Kara, all you do is ask questions. It’s actually rather tedious. Please for both our sakes, figure a way to make it productive and mutually beneficial. I’m hanging up the phone now, goodbye.”
