This is hilarious to me actually
Belle Movie (Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime): uses direct homages and parallels to beauty and the beast
Kingdom Hearts: uses disney’s beauty and the beast directly alongside many (many) parallels to it’s leads and both their personal and romantic arcs
Belle: smoothly flips the narrative assumption of these tropes with romance to platonic with some clever foreshadowing and masterful use of tone
Kingdom Hearts: layers the romantic parallels and imagery multiple times over (with both other disney movies and classical fairy tales) to emphasise a slowly building romance
Belle fandom: UGH this movie led me on, the lack of followup on the romantic subplot was SUCH a letdown >:( why didnt the girl and the boy get together >>:((
KH fandom: THE LEADS AREN’T IN LOVE BC THEY’RE BOTH BOYS SHUT UP YOU’RE DELUSIONAL THE ROSES AND HEARTS DONT MEAN ANYTHING

I can’t stop thinking about how perfectly Barbie portrays girlhood and growing up… How you’re born in a perfect pink world, where you make the rules and get to prioritise whimsies and friendship and beauty, and then you notice something has changed, you discover that something is wrong with you, and you’re offered an illusion of choice, but even if you’d rather keep wearing your heels and go home and be safe and comfortable, you have to choose the Birkenstock, you have to leave your home, you have to grow up. So you’re thrust into this gritty, unfeeling world, where you’re scrutinised and suppressed, where you want to disappear into yourself, because everything is harsh and big and you are tiny and fragile and inadequate. And as overwhelming and impossible as it seems, you survive it. You find truth in the things you believed in when you were young, the inherent good in humanity, connection and love; your friends who look at you while you are crying, and tell you that they cannot imagine what it is that you do not like about yourself.

I literally can't take your Belle criticism seriously if your main point about why it's a bad movie starts off by being upset that you weren't given an explicit romance between the Dragon and Belle when that literally wasn't the POINT of the film. Not to mention the people who obviously didn't grasp the fact that the reason the film didn't give Belle and the Dragon more screen time to form a PROPER relationship (even platonically) is because it was literally a parallel to Suzu's past and her inability to understand why her mom would risk so much for a stranger until she herself was put into a position where she desperately wanted to help someone she knew absolutely nothing about. If they had actually formed a closeness then it wouldn't have given her that understanding because it would be the same as helping someone she's already attached to like a friend or family member. But she had no connection to the Dragon and that's what makes it come full circle and helps her find peace and begin to heal now that she understands her mom's motivations better!! God. This movie absolutely has flaws but this is NOT one of them and I'm sick of seeing people say it is.

Just to emphasize how much of a left turn “Saw X” is for the franchise, you need to consider what “Saw” is to most people. Aside from the first movie which has been mostly re-evaluated as a decent thriller that was more focused on story than gore, the series has been criticized for being an excuse to show off people being mutilated in the worst ways possible. The series has been credited as a “pioneer” in the torture porn label, which you can’t really argue due to it being mostly true for the sequels. The series has also never been a critical darling (all the movies before X have all had negative Rotten Tomatoes scores), which I think contributed to the series’ image as low-grade torture porn.
As the story got more convoluted and frustrating, the more the series seemed to focus on killing people. For me, I started noticing this when the 4th movie featured a trap that didn’t really have a purpose in the story (the mausoleum trap with Art Blank). That trap felt more like the makers wanted to do a really brutal scene and didn’t care if it made sense.
Main characters would only last one movie. It was pretty much useless getting attached to any protagonist since they usually got axed off by the end of the movie. Because protagonists kept getting killed off, further sequels tended to focus on characters who played more minor roles. Rigg is probably the best example of this since I’m pretty sure no one was expecting this character to be a protagonist. Point I’m making here is that character development was essentially useless since protagonists were just glorified cannon fodder.
Then there’s the unfortunate existence of “Saw 3D”, which made the series look like it was just trend-chasing.
The series died for a few years. It then tried to come back with “Jigsaw” and “Spiral”, which the makers claimed to be a reinvention of the series that would renew interest in the franchise. Instead, they were both just sorta lackluster and didn’t really convince people that Saw was worth revisiting.
So, “Saw X” clearly had an uphill battle. But lo and behold, the movie gets released and ends up being:
1) A surprisingly good character piece centered around Jigsaw and Amanda. Yes, there are still death traps and gore, but the focus on story and character development is definitely felt more in this installment.
2) The only “Saw” movie with a positive Rotten Tomatoes score. In general, seeing positive critical reception about a “Saw” movie is crazy to me.
3) An actual, successful reinvention of the franchise since it’s centered around Jigsaw instead of having him be the mastermind in the background. Just by being a straightforward thriller instead of a convoluted horror-mystery is enough to distinguish this from the other 9 movies.
Kudos to “Saw”. This is why in one of my posts last night, I called it one of the greatest redemption arcs I’ve seen in horror. It’s the TENTH installment in a series that’s been critically savaged its entire lifetime, it shouldn’t have succeeded. But here we are.

Saw X Honest Review
spoiler warning
First of all I saw this movie opening night with a few friends. I was definitely a little confused that the movie didn’t open with a trap, but was pleasantly surprised at the transition into the eye vacuum trap. The cinematography in this trap (and the entire movie) is absolutely stunning! I was on the edge of my seat.
I thought the characters were dislikeable, yet in a good way? Was I rooting for these people? No. But we’re they entering to watch? Yes. All the cast members gave outstanding performances. I think one of the standout actors is Cecelia’s actress. She brings an amazing amount of emotion an maturity to her role, she embodied it perfectly.
My only problems with this movie was the twist. It was a little hard to follow (with a few plot holes) and overall a tad confusing. However I think it still holds up and the movie is still great. I was CRUSHED when Cecelia crushed Gabriella’s neck (haha get it… funny pun) like she did not deserve that at all.
Shawnee Smith and Tobin Bell’s history really shows in this film and it WORKS. Amanda and Johns feelings for each other and genuine care really comes off well on camera. I thought Costas Mandylor’s cameo was great too!
That’s all I have for now. Overall rating 8.5/10. Very solid movie for both new and old fans of Saw to follow. Great job Lionsgate.

Actually yknow now that I’m thinking about Belle, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen in media another situation where a character goes in for a kiss, realizes the other person is uncomfortable without that character overtly reacting or saying anything, and then backs off to go for a hug instead.
Honestly there’s a lot to love about Belle, but the way it reframes things, both in universe and out, are some of my favorites about it. I feel like those who felt as though the ‘romantic buildup’ led them on and were dissatisfied when it instead became platonic… kind of missed the point. It was never meant to be romantic, and it used those cues to make you question your assumptions- and moreover make you notice that something was off. honestly I think the movie and it’s themes work far better without it. It’s a really elegant demonstration of realizing the importance of someone without automatically assuming romance, that not being romantic does not mean lesser, and that, well, things aren’t always what they seem. Really what better tale to draw inspiration from for that kind of story?
As for my own experience watching it, honestly I can’t really quantify why I got the feeling early on that the whole romance thing wasn’t very romantic. I had nigglings of doubt as early as the beast crashing the concert (yes, actually. No, I really cannot tell you why. I didn’t think much of it at the time, assuming it would smooth out later) but by the time the dance rolled around all I could think was ‘this is either a horribly executed romance or it’s not supposed to be one at all’.
So of course when we got the twist I was delighted, because I’d been right. The pieces all slotted together in a wonderful harmony befitting a movie where music is such a central device.
I’m just gonna go ahead and blame kingdom hearts for this. It’s taught me too well to listen to my gut when it comes to the tone of a scene lol.
Belle took all these romantic tropes, the very direct homages to beauty and the beast, the roses and dances and imagery, and so smoothly shifted them from romantic potential to platonic ideal that I’m legitimately impressed. What’s more is that not for a second did that shift to platonic ever feel like a downgrade. The characters feelings did not lessen, only given new context and understanding both by the audience and the characters themselves, nor were they treated differently by the narrative. I don’t know if people understand how rare that is.

The shared look of love between Barbie and Gloria when they first saw each other was so beautiful. They recognised each other at once! They’ve been taking care of each other for years!

went back to watch that part of ep 88 and i can't get over how terrifying the vision of Imogen being attacked by the worm is. You and your friends are staying still in complete darkness. You can't see, can't make a sound or move a finger. You hear creatures, whatever they are, moving so very near you. You've seen them devour body parts before, like piranhas. No one knows exactly how close they are. Are they waiting for you to move, watching, just beyond reach? It's too scary to breathe. And then something goes wrong and you make a sound. The creature stops. You can feel it getting closer. Closer. It's here. Its mouth, teeth are on you. No escape, no way to ask for help. It bites, experimentally, tastes you. You don't move and let it happen. It's content with the prey. You are tasty. It takes a bigger bite. Your head is on fire, you can feel the blood dripping, you want to scream, cry, fight, plead, run, attack, kill, live. You stay still, praying to the gods you don't believe in, to your friends you do believe in, to Laudna who is the only one who can see, to anybody for help, for this terror to end. Laudna comes through, she gets it away for a moment, gives you a chance. You try to escape. Can't do so in time. You can hear the creature coming back for you. You are tasty. The creature opens its mouth more and it SNAPS over the front half of your body.

love how jigsaw wanted to save a child in saw x and appeared surprisingly sympathetic, but he has also forced people to play his games for crimes such as: recent suicide attempt, drug addiction, being the victim of domestic abuse etc. like yeah he’s capable of sympathy/mercy, but dude’s moral compass is a straight up labyrinth.
