one piece made me realize how good the found family trope is,,there r so many found families in op that ican’t even fit them all if i wanted to.liek the way one piece masters the concept of “you can find your family anywhere”. if u love the found family trope and havent watched one piece literaly what are u doing

one piece shows that you can still find your family even when you lose yours,, you arent forced to consider biological family your real family.sanji abandoning his terrible abusive biological family and finding zeff, and later joining the straw hats,, robin watching her mother and her community dying in front of her, having sauls parting words be that she will one day find friends who truly care about her,,years later meeting the straw hats, who literally declared war on the world to save her and would do it again,, law also saw his family and community die before his eyes and became consumed with hate ,,doflamingo found him and spent 3 years manipulating him and trying to mold him into a monster ,which then corazon takes law after hearing that law carries the will of d,,law and cora grow a bond , cora doing anything to save the terminally ill boy and protecting him from the hands of doflamingo,,when cora dies, law is determined to avenge his death, and he commemorates him through every single thing he does,, law learns that there was never a reason corazon loved him,and that you cant stick a reason to why somebody loves you

found family in one piece is important cuz it shows that a family can be anything. theres no such thing as to what a family is supposed to look like,, it represents many of the reasons why found family comes to be. loss, abuse, bonds,,your family is just people that genuinely respect and care about you

the lesson here is that the found family trope solos and one piece is goated

Because it wasn't an official adoption, the family was not recorded as such in the village records. This would have been very helpful when Arlong came to extort "tribute" based on a household's population, however she 1-failed to kill him and 2-would not deny she had two daughters when confronted about the discrepancy. Thus either her or the two girls were covered by the savings... I think you can guess what happened.”

Shark Genitals & World Building

So, I've seen this Q&A a few times now and it really got me thinking about Fish-man biology.

Now, to be clear, I think it's pretty clear Oda isn't being entirely serious. When you look at how he designs his characters he goes for whatever is fun. He's not doing extensive research on whatever aquatic species he slaps on his fish-men or Merfolk characters. This is why for a lot of them, if you look up what they are mixed with they rarely share much if anything with the animal he's picked.

Saying a character has two dicks is funny, so Hody has two dicks--that's all.

But taking the answer more seriously the idea that at least some (because they do vary so widely from fish-person to fish-person) have changed genitals because of their added fish anatomy is interesting from a world-building perspective.

As someone who has a special interest in animal biology and has watched a lot of documentaries I can say that fish have really diverse breeding strategies. So, I guess, if Hody can have two dicks because he's a shark, I wonder if this could be true for any other fish-people and merfolk.

We see that at least some fish-people do have children the same way regular humans do, but to my knowledge we don't see any pregnant mermaids. Given how much larger Neptune is then his wife, and how massive Shirahoshi is, I think it makes sense that perhaps like many fish, Otohime laid eggs that were fertilized separately (this is actually how goldfish mate).

It could be possible that the way mermaids or even fish-women have children depends on the father. If they are not compatible in size they can reproduce Ovuliparity (the way I imagine Otohime did), or if they are of similar size they either go the more human route or, after copulation they lay fertilized eggs (like the skate cases often called mermaid purses you find washed up on the beach).

There's also something to be said for the variations fish have with gender. Some fish are capable of changing gender. It's more common that female fish become male (protandry), usually the largest of a group replacing the dominate male in the group. This happens mostly with coral reef fish like wrasses, groupers and parrot-fish.

Meanwhile, anemone fish, like clown fish change from male to female. When the one female dies the remaining male will become female, while an outside male will become that new female's mate.

Then there are Black Helmet fish which are both simultaneously and take turns releasing eggs and sperm when they spawn.

So, if fish-people and merfolk had similarly diverse genders and ways of reproducing I think that'd just be really neat. It could also lead to some fun misunderstandings between fish-people, merfolk and humans.

Of course, I don't think Oda ever put that much thought into it. He just does whatever he finds fun character design wise. I mean, it's not like Arlong has barrels like Sawsharks do, and Jinbe looks nothing like a whale shark. On top of that the story isn't really focused on that type of world building. Nor do I think he could really showcase something that deals so much with sex--even if it is fish sex.

Still, makes for some really great head-canons.

Ratings: Teen and Up Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence Relationships: Rosinante/Bell-mere Characters: Donquixote "Corazon" Rosinante, Bell-mere, Nami, Nojiko, Arlong, Donquixote Doflamingo, Trafalgar D. Water Law Summary: There was once a very, very happy family. It consisted of two little girls, a woman, and a man. A pretty, picture-perfect little family. But nothing's ever as good as it seems on the surface. Word Count: 20k, 15/15 chapters.

Chapter 15

It was a mere few minutes later when Bell-mère reappeared, something in her arms. Whatever it was wrapped in a thin, gray-ish blanket, large enough to be a small child or something of a similar size.

What the hell?

Before he could ask, Bell-mère launched into an explanation on her own, though Rosinante missed the first few words, still observing. “—he’s been stuck here for a long time. I don’t know what Doflamingo was doing to him, or why he wanted him—but I promised we’d help him.”

Well, this was going to make everything more difficult, but Rosinante wouldn’t say a word about it. Bell-mère was carrying him, so it was likely the kid couldn’t walk—though why, exactly, he couldn’t say. He was glad once more, however, that Kaido seemed to have business to sort out with his brother.

Bell-mère wouldn’t be able to support his weight anymore, not with a kid in her arms—but it was only a few more steps back into the casino, where they could get help—Rosinante was sure he could make it on his own.

He didn’t have too much dignity to keep from dragging himself there, either. Anything to get the hell out of that creepy-ass hallway.

A large crash from the left had them a bit more hurried, though. Bell-mère punched in the code and the door slid open, sounds and bright lights from the casino floor flooding in.

Rosinante forced himself to his feet, slowly moving forward. Nojiko plastered herself to his uninjured side, helping him walk. As much as he wished otherwise, she was probably the only reason he made it out, in the end. That gut wound was really doing more of a number on him than he expected. He’d need treatment—soon, preferably—but he wouldn’t die. 

…Probably.

Reading the Arlong Park battle scenes while cooking salmon in the oven feels fitting, somehow

#I am slowly approaching 10%?? #maybe I will catch up on this someday #fight scene chapters go REALLY fast. I read most of vol 10 today when I'm usually 1-2 chapters/day #I really appreciated OPLA at the time but the manga really wrote Zoro and Usopp much better in this arc #the whole thing with Nami's village 🥺 they're so sweet. Bellmere was a fucking badass. #Luffy continues to have no thoughts and I love him #this battle is MUCH more legible than the Don Krieg battle. Oda's art definitely improved in between #one piece
