This Evening, in UK Politics - What Even is Happening?!

Suella Braverman, somehow an even more vile person than Priti Patel, has resigned because she sent an email from her personal account and also governments should be held accountable for their mistakes. Agreeing with Suella Braverman makes me feel dirty all over. Still, a stopped clock is right twice a day.

The fracking vote is being framed as a confidence vote.

There is a three-line whip. Any Tory MP not voting in line with the party will be removed from the parliamentary party and have to sit as an Independent MP.

The Chief Whip has resigned maybe.

It is no longer a confidence vote.

The deputy Chief Whips have also resigned?!

Jacob Rees Mogg and Thérèse Coffey are manhandling MPs into the lobby to vote?! There's an account of at least one MP crying as they did so.

Liz Truss was too busy arguing with Wendy Morton, the possibly-former Chief Whip to vote. On a vote with a three-line whip.

No Votes were recorded for 40 Tories, including not just the actual Prime Minister but also Boris Johnson (who has more important things to do than represent his constituents in parliament apparently), Nadine Dorries (no doubt wherever Boris is, hoping he notices her or something), David Davis, Greg Clark, Sir Iain Duncan Smith, Kwasi Kwarteng, Theresa May, Wendy Morton, Alok Sharma, Priti Patel, and Ben Wallace (who's actually in Washington D.C. on government business, so he gets a let). These are all party grandees, former Prime Minsters, former leaders of the party, and Nadine Dorries.

I mean, I'm assuming they're not going to withdraw the whip from the Prime Minister and members of her own cabinet (Alok Sharma in this case since Mr Wallace is abroad), although I'm willing to bet there are several Tories darkly hoping that someone will. That's one way to get rid of her!

Wendy Morton apparently has resigned.

Wouldn't it be amazing if she said, "No, I didn't resign and I've withdrawn the whip from Liz Truss!"

According to various sources and polls, if there was an election tomorrow, come Friday the SNP would be the official opposition, because the Tories would have fewer seats than the Scottish National Party and Labour would, obviously, be in power.

If Liz Truss had become Prime Minister and then done nothing whatsoever she would be doing better than she is now.

Let's have a look at some quotes!

“It’s a shambles and a disgrace. I think it is utterly appalling. I am livid,” veteran Tory MP Charles Walker told the BBC. “I hope all those people that put Liz Truss in Number 10, I hope it was worth it. I hope it was worth it for the ministerial red box, I hope it was worth it to sit around the Cabinet table, because the damage they have done to our party is extraordinary.”

Asked if the government can survive the night, one Tory MP replied: “I hope not.”

Labour MP, the shadow Scottish secretary Ian Murray, tweeted that he had "never seen scenes like it" in the voting lobby. He said he'd seen Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg shouting at his colleagues, whips "screaming at Tories", and "dragging people in".

Alexander Stafford tweeted -  "Lots of rumours flying around tonight. This vote was never about fracking but about Labour trying to destabilise the country, and take control of Parliament." This is my favourite, because he's trying to blame the Opposition for this!

Bengiyo's Queer Media Syllabus

For those who are not aware, I have decided to run the gauntlet of @bengiyo’s Queer Cinema Syllabus and have officially started Unit 1: Coming of Age Post Moonlight. The films in Unit 1 are Pariah (2011), Get Real (1998), Edge of Seventeen (1998), My Own Private Idaho (1991), and Mysterious Skin (2004)

Today I will be writing about:

Edge of Seventeen (1998) dir. David Moreton

Summary: A teenager copes with his sexuality on the last day of school in 1984. It shows him coping with being gay and being with friends. (from IMDB)

Cast: Chris Stafford as Eric, the main character  Tina Holmes as Maggie, Eric’s best friend/girlfriend-ish? Anderson Gabrych as Rod, Eric’s gay awakening Lea DeLaria as Angie, former work supervisor of Eric, Maggie, and Rod at their summer job.

I had some firsts with this film. This was the first film in the syllabus that had identifiable tropes that carry through some of the BLs, which makes sense as this syllabus was designed as a progression in to BL. But most importantly, this was the first film in the syllabus that made me truly understand how important it was for me to work my way through these films, and that comes down to the surrounding conversation I had with @bengiyo and @shortpplfedup, when I expressed absolute shock and awe that a film from 1998 had two men shoving their tongues down each other’s throats, mouthing at penises through pants, massaging bare asses on screen, mentioning/simulating rimming, showing and actually using lube. 

I decided to work my way through this syllabus because growing up I a) didn’t know I was queer or at the very least b) did not admit to myself I was queer, c) did not have any out queer people in my family and d) did not have any our queer elders in my surrounding life. Therefore every single piece of queer cinema or television that I consumed was something that I just happened to stumble across, or that I had potentially seen someone post about on tumblr. Thus, there is a wealth of queer cinema that I never knew existed. 

In the past few years I have reflected a lot on how little history I know about my community. I have thought about lines in The Inheritance play where older gay men are discussing how baby gays just Simply Do Not Understand but also how they don’t know the names of important and influential people in the community, we may all know Stonewall, but honestly until a year or so ago I could not name a single other important moment in US queer history. I don’t like how much I am missing because I didn’t know myself and didn’t have anyone around to learn it from. 

All of this to say, I wanted to watch more queer cinema because I didn’t know what was out there, and in doing so I have realized how important it is to me to see these glimpses of history in what was allowed, acceptable, tolerated, made visible, and the level to which queer characters were humanized and treated with empathy and compassion. 

Anyway, I was watching this film and DMing Ben and Nini about it and when I expressed surprise that they were going this far in a film from over 20 years ago, they said the following (independent of each other): 

“I realize you came of age after 9/11, but you truly have no idea how hard this nation regressed” 

“Ah the halcyon days of the 90’s before the weird post-911 puritanical backlash” 

So, naturally a conversation begun around society, art, and culture and how it change between the 90s and 2000s (@shortpplfedup). How military service and gay marriage were compromises compared to what queer people were pushing for before 9-11 (@bengiyo). And that is when I was struck with the understanding that I needed to go through this syllabus. For the sake of understanding what art and culture and queerness was like before 9-11. For the sake of understanding just how far film and television have regressed in the US when it comes to queerness and how it is portrayed, how frequently, and in what contexts in film and television. 

And there are little moments in this film that I see nodding to queer history, the most visually striking one for me being the shot of the back of a record holder that had a pink triangle as its design. That feels extremely intentional to me. 

It is also the first film in the syllabus I’ve seen that contains trends/tropes utilized in BL. First being where a boy, left unattended, grabs the nearest article of his crush’s clothing and smells it. The way the enter the final sex scene in this film by focusing initially on the feet, which I have seen done a number of times in the BLs that I have watched (l just finished You’re My Sky today and they imply sex through foot position, you can see it in the trailer for Only Friends as well). But unlike most of the BLs, I’ve watched that utilize that imagery due to rating requirements or censorship, THE CAMERA KEEPS GOING and you’ve got bare, hairy asses, all the hip you could possibly want, and two men practically eating each other’s faces. I see so many echos of Teh and Tarn’s relationship to one another reflected in the dynamic between Eric and Maggie. 

I guess I don’t have much else say about the film itself except that it is very clearly created by people who are queer, who get it, who understand what Rod is saying when he says he likes Madonna, how you can immediately tell that Eric is going to a gay club when he pulls up to the parking lot of Universal Fruits and Nuts. The way the exterior of that building feels very different from what is inside, and made me think a bit about speakeasies. The shirt Eric wears when he comes out being a disassembled, abstracted face, his brother wearing a That’s The American Way t-shirt. You know what the film is trying to tell us about Eric’s identity based on which female musical artists he has on his wall. 

Like the other two films I have seen in Unit 1, the ending of the film is the most striking, lingering part for me. Eric comes out to his mother in the following exchange: 

Eric says “I’m gay” \\ in the quietest voice she has, his mother says “I know” Eric and his mother hug* and she asks him“What did I do wrong?” she lets go and moves to the other end of the living room \\ Eric looks devastated says* “I love you” \\ she turns to look at him and says “I don’t know how to handle this”. 

In that initial “I’m gay” \\ “I know” exchange be followed by a nice, warm hug, there was a spark of hope in me that this would be a coming out that his parent would handle gracefully (despite the other moments in the film where she starts to suspect and question him). I thought for the briefest of seconds that her question “What did I do wrong?” was her asking Eric how she had misstepped in ways that he was worried about coming out to her. But in about the same amount of time that it took for Eric to process the question, I realized a much deeper, more painful thread was being called to the surface: “What did I do wrong [to make you gay?]”

This feels like an admission a la Mol in 180 Degrees, telling Wang that she is, in fact, disappointed that he is gay. And you can see the way it impacts Eric. And silly me, I should never for a second thought that this coming out might go over flawlessly, because this story and parts of gay culture and gay sex that are included in this film indicate to me there are queer people behind the story. Which means the way that Eric’s mother handles the coming out is so much more likely to be realistic. Parent and child both confirming that they love each other, but their child still being hurt by their parent’s inability to understand and figure out how to handle new information like that spoke directly to how the conversation between me and my mother went when I came out. 

But even more important to me than that scene, than the complexity that comes from loving someone and not knowing how to reconcile love and homophobia, is that life goes on. Eric leaves the house, and ends up back at the gay club, surrounded by queer elders, seeing a boy he has a crush on, and smiling and enjoying himself with his community while he listens to his friend sing the words “nothing but blue skies from now on”. Which just feels…idk, so goddamn real? Carrying the pain of rejection with you but being determined to find joy in the people who accept you, despite how much the rejection may hurt. 

I place this film in the by, for, about category 

In general, I would have given this show an 8.5/10, but with the inclusion of poppers, blow jobs, rimming, use of condoms, and the first fucking inclusion of lube in any gay sex scenes I’ve ever seen on screen, I’m bumping it up to a 9.

Kana Headcanons

Or rather, Kana headcanons if she had been in the original series.

- Kana’s arrival to Sodor was rife with miscommunication. No one told her she was going to be in a railway museum, just that she was going to Sodor. She couldn’t talk to the earl about it, as he was away on business. And the castle engines knew about as much as she did.

- Thomas, Percy, and Nia took her out for late night runs to cheer her up. Twice a week, they’d sneak up to the castle and show her around the island. It was pretty fun, at least until the Fat Controller found out.

- Eventually, the earl came back and told her that even though she was part of the museum, she wasn’t going to be a static display. She was going to be bringing tourists to and from the castle with Connor and Caitlin.

- Kana isn’t a full bullet train. Instead of a pair of engines with a rake of coaches between them, it’s just Kana and two coaches. Although the earl has planned to get more for her.

- Like Stafford, Kana has a rechargable battery, albeit a much more powerful one. But unlike Stafford, Kana wasn’t built with hers. Hers was installed at the Dieselworks after the earl came back. There are charging ports at Ulfstead and Vicarstown for her.

- Kana initially had a habit of breaking the speed limit. But after an incredibly near miss with a cow and a stern talking to from the Fat Controller and the earl, she stuck to the limit.

- This girl collects psuedo grandparents like trading cards. She’s got Edward, Emily, Henry, Hiro, Stephen, Glynn, and even Gordon. She doesn’t even realize she’s doing it.

- Kana is a little gremlin. She’s not as mischevious as Bill and Ben, but she has been known to play tricks on other engines when she’s bored.

- She and James got off to a rocky start. James said that she and her coaches looked like a giant worm. Of course, Kana took offense to that, but Henry stopped her before she could fire back. And in typical Sodor fashion, James later crashed into a muddy field and became a bit of a worm himself.

- Kana is particularly fond of Bruno, a brakevan at the railway museum. Bruno tells the earl when her social battery is drained and she needs a break, and Kana will take Bruno to a quiet place when he gets overstimulated.

- She’s one of, if not the youngest engine on the island. Most of young engines are at least a few years old. Kana was just barely out of the workshops when she arrived on Sodor. This causes some of the older engines to talk down to her like a child, much to her chagrin.

- Kana has pulled trucks exactly once, and probably never will again. See, Henry was ill and a train needed to get to Vicarstown urgently. When Kana got to the end of the line, the trucks were begging for someone slower to take them.

- She’s not a fan of going backwards. When Gordon’s brake coach broke a brake pipe (Try saying that three times fast), Kana served as an emergency replacement. Something about watching everything whizz by her in reverse made her feel sick. She doesn’t think she’ll ever see what Bruno enjoys about it.

- She once dragged Rosie across the island, much like Gordon did with Thomas. Although in Kana’s case, it was an accident. Rosie is quite certain that she doesn’t want to go that fast ever again.

- She’s a little envious of the steam engines and they way they blow steam at each other when they’re annoyed. The best she can do is shout and blow her horn.

That's too easy, sadly. As fun as it is to bag on Sandy Petersen, there's a substantial chunk from Greg Stafford in the mix and it was a group effort to keep things that racist, and then the Guide and the Moon Design/nu-Chaosium doubled down.

I think instead, we can safely blame Kralorela on that motherfucker Doug Schaffer.

One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.

The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.

It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

I’m happy for them to be a full, half, step, or even adopted sibling as the family dynamic lends itself to any of these options. essentially, the Staffords are a well-to-do family and relatively well-known in the medical world (both parents sit on hospital boards and there are various wings sporting their names – think of the Avery’s if you’re familiar with the world of Grey’s Anatomy. It was always expected that Henry would follow in his parents’ footsteps and become a doctor; this sibling, though, had more leniency to choose their own path. Henry and his sibling are close – they more or less relied on each other throughout their younger years, and Henry still views his sibling as one of the only people in the world whom he truly loves. I imagine that the sibling may have tagged along for wedding shenanigans or just to get a vacation out of it.

Henry, known as Hal to friends and family members, had always been a determined sort of person. Limits and boundaries were not something that stopped him. If there was a limit, odds were Hal would find some way to defy it.

This mindset was something that served him well throughout life. That, and the fact that Hal genuinely believed himself to be a prodigy. He'd grown up in a household of doctors, and had always known that that would be his path in life. There was no question about it. The Stafford name held weight in the medical world, and Henry would simply have to continue that.

Medical school caused Henry to question the things he'd believed about himself -- that he was special, that he was a prodigy, that he was born for this -- but as always, he made it through.

Through it all, by his side, stood Yazmin. They'd met through a mutual friend, and Henry found himself dazzled by her. The magic didn't last for long, though. Amid the life questions that came with medical school came other things -- a new personality (an air of superiority that masked insecurities), and the affairs.

It was the death of their relationship, of course. Henry was no longer the person that Yaz had fallen for, no longer a person even he recognized. Yet, they found themselves a flight, begrudgingly playing the part of the still happy couple, for a wedding -- the mutual friend's who'd introduced them, to be specific.
