I have a theory that the laser in Tron, and Tron Legacy, can only re-materialize people from the digital world if there's already organic material stored in it. Meaning that once Kevin and Sam were both on the Grid, it would only be possible to bring two people out again. It's possible that Kevin knew this, and was prepared to stay behind all along. It would also mean that the Real World-Quorra is made out of Kevin's organic material, moving her a step farther from just being his metaphorical, adopted daughter.
What's really interesting about this theory is that it would mean that Clu's plan for invading the Real World with a huge army was doomed to failure from the beginning. At most, he could get two people out. This lead me to imagine some different "what if Clu won" scenarios:
One creepy scenario would be that Clu would hide out in the arcade basement and send out a lackey (presumably Rinzler) to kidnap people, who are then digitized to get more organic material to materialize more of his soldiers, slowly growing his army beneath the arcade. This would probably not work in the long run, since sooner or later someone would notice that people keep disappearing in the vicinity of Flynn's Arcade, so Clu would probably never get all his thousands of soldiers out.
An alternative to this scenario would be that Clu pretends to be Flynn, and makes Flynn's followers in the Flynn Lives movement his own computer-obsessed cult, which he grows into a huge organization, until he eventually digitizes them all in some big ceremony, replacing them with his soldiers. Again, pretty creepy.
Then there's the comedy option where Clu and Rinzler try to pretend that they're Flynn and Alan (kidnapping and digitizing the real Alan, of course), but are really bad at it. Especially the mindwiped, emotionless killer Rinzler, doing a really poor, Terminator-esque attempt at pretending to be human. Just imagine them having dinner with Lora, for example:
Clu: "Mmm, isn't this food good, Ri... I mean, Alan?"
Rinzler: "Yes, Flynn. I am delighted to consume this organic matter to replenish my energy reserves."
Clu (laughing nervously): "Oh, that Alan, what a kidder!"
Rinzler: "Yes. I enjoy saying unusual things to elicit an amused response from my fellow Users."
Clu (sweating): "Humans, Alan, you mean humans."

He manifested, like a newborn star. Daniel wasn't really, really from anywhere. The conditions were right, and he came into being. For months I've dreamed of the perfect son. He found me here and showed me the purest form of love. Profoundly naive; unimaginably wise. He is truly spectacular. Everything I'd hope to find by cloning the real Danny; control, power, perfection. None of it meant a thing. I've been living a lie. Daniel's existence shattered it, the possibilities of his root code, his digital D N A. Perfection? He already is! The love, fatherhood, every dream I've have ever had about being part of a family up for grabs. My perfect son, he's here, he exists and I will protect him with my life.
I posted the original quote from Tron Legacy before in a video clip, but I felt like making a fan-made version for my Danny Program AU. Sadly Vlad can’t say some words but eh, not all technology can be as advanced as the stuff in Tron!
Original: ...They manifested, like a flame. They weren't really, really from anywhere. The conditions were right, and they came into being. For centuries we dreamed of gods, spirits, aliens, and intelligence beyond our own. I found them in here, like flowers in a wasteland. Profoundly naive; unimaginably wise. They were spectacular. Everything I'd hope to find in the system; control, order, perfection. None of it meant a thing. Been living in a hall of mirrors. The ISOs shattered it, the possibilities of their root code, their digital DNA. Disease? History! Science, philosophy, every idea man has ever had about the Universe up for grabs. Biodigital jazz, man. The ISOs, they were going to be my gift to the world.

reasons i love tron legacy, the best movie ever <3
daft punk is my favorite band and they did the entire score. as i said - the mixture of traditional instruments and synth - the blending of classic soundtrack techniques and the slow building/repetition of house - incredible truly
everything is neon
technically it’s about video games
BIODIGITAL JAZZ, MAN
had a lil crush on the guy who plays sam flynn <3 we cast him as jesse for @cambionverse - also had a minor crush on olivia wilde who plays quorra
i saw the first tron but i wasn’t really moved and i forgot everything that happened in it. luckily you don’t really need to know much about it to understand the second tron!
it was the first movie i ever saw in 3D in theaters <3 one of my bucket list items is finding someone with one of those fancy 3D TVs so i can watch it in 3D just one more time before i die
it’s about a guy looking for his missing dad. you might say he went on a coding trip and hasn’t been home in a few decades
introduced the phrase “radical” into my regular vocabulary
the HILARIOUSLY persistent security guard who insists on following sam flynn up to the roof and out onto this tiny narrow beam from which he could FALL and unlike sam flynn he has no parachute. i respect that guy so much
quorra’s asexual. she is because i said so aces can see other aces
if any of you bitches come at me talking about that born sexy yesterday video i will end you. the video is valid but it isn’t applicable to quorra because she’s not overtly sexualized and since they’re in her world she doesn’t rely on sam to teach her how to act normal, he relies on her for that!!! anyway.
the uncanny valley of the de-aged kevin flynn. it looks worse every year, god bless <3
MOTORCYCLES!
sam flynn jumping off a skyscraper bc he can
those little dudes with the voice filters who go “RECTIFY >:(”
the fact that sam flynn, Manly Man who rides motorcycles and jumps off skyscrapers and spends the night in jail, has the TINIEST cutest least manly little boston terrier. we said NO to toxic masculinity <3
the way everybody turns into pixels when they die. god i wish that was me
ok so at one point early in the movie sam goes back to his dad’s old arcade. they took INCREDIBLE pains to put the same game machines in the same spots. they did the same furniture, the same signs, the same tile floor. they rebuilt this set with 1-to-1 perfection and then they AGED it. tarps over everything. dust. cobwebs. scratches and chips in the tile and drywall. and sam flynn he goes in and he flips the breakers on and the place comes to life and IMMEDIATELY journey’s separate ways starts playing, signifying sam and his missing father going their separate ways, and how nobody has touched this place in decades. it’s 4.5 solid minutes of scenery porn. the absolute PANACHE
actually the entire movie is scenery porn but the arcade bit really stood out
the clicky clicky of the heels during the disc scene. apparently they put that together on set
lol also that the ENTIRE SCENE is so reminiscent of the harder better faster stronger section of interstella 5555
the absolute pandemonium of a free-for-all fight scene INSIDE a club was good enough, but god himself showing up to turn out the lights and have background characters kneel as he passes is even better
the whole winter soldier thing rinzler has going on. no i don’t want to talk about it. leave me alone this was 2010 rinzler walked so james barnes could run
the fact that quorra and sam DON’T kiss at the end despite clear romantic undertones. we love a good ace-coded romance <3
and that’s why tron legacy is the best movie ever. thank you for coming to my ted talk

A huge thank you to everyone for participating: You all did a fantastic job. If you see any errors on this spreadsheet (wrongly attributed works, missing links, wrongly named contributors, works not labeled NSFW, etc), please send in a message to let me know!
An extra round of thanks goes out to the pinch hitters this year: @skidblast, @error404-drawnotfound, @roolsilver, @perictione, ragingpika, @airwarrior, @biodigital-jazz, @carmarriage all did an absolutely fantastic job when they stepped in to create extra gifts.

One thing I've come to appreciate more about TRON Legacy in recent years is how different it is from the first film. Specifically, I've begun to appreciate it after I've seen how Disney has handled the Star Wars films.
The plot and themes of Legacy are very different from the first TRON. Where the original is an allegory for real-life, then-current technology with a strange and fascinating religious subtext, Legacy goes in a more sci-fi direction with emerging AIs and biodigital jazz, man. Compare this with the new Star Wars films mostly being "hey, remember the original trilogy?" to various degrees.
Visually, Legacy takes the basic designs and concepts of the original but gives it a complete overhaul. Many of the vehicles and other technology is definitely recognizable (heh) as TRON stuff, but with its own distinct look. It actually reminds me somewhat of the visuals in The Phantom Menace, which were often distinctly different from the original trilogy, while still being recognizably "Star Wars" (The Naboo starfighters were shiny and chrome, but R2-D2 could still slot in behind the cockpit). Again, the new Star Wars films feels far more conservative with trying new things, the new ships and other tech are mostly only slight variations on stuff from the original trilogy, when they're not just throwing in old ships whole cloth.
And the music, man, the music. It's actually amazing to realize that Legacy doesn't use a single melody from Wendy Carlos' groundbreaking, memorable and just plain wonderful original score. But even when the songs and the way they sound are all new, they are still made with the basic concept of the original soundtrack in mind: Fusing modern electronic music with classic orchestral film music. It might not be as groundbreaking now as when Wendy did it, but it's definitely memorable. Meanwhile, over in the new Star Wars films, we get some new songs with basically the same sound as the original trilogy, interspersed with plenty of John William's Greatest Hits.
TRON Legacy might have been part of Disney throwing stuff at the wall in search of their own live action blockbuster franchise, before they decided to simply buy some of those franchises instead and playing it safe with them, but I think this flailing "anything goes" attitude in many ways makes it a far more interesting film than, say, The Rise of Skywalker. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVED Rogue One, and all its fan-service and thick layers of "remember this?" But I think it would have been somewhat more impactful if all the other Disney Star Wars films weren't trying to do the same thing.
I'm actually slightly worried that the third TRON film, if it ever does materialize, will be going the way of Star Wars. It might be heretical to say, but from this perspective I'm actually happy that Daft Punk won't return to make the music. I would probably be content with visual fan-service and riffs on the Legacy soundtrack and Carlos's tunes, but I would be really excited if the film is something completely different from its predecessors, while still retaining their basic themes, doing cool and interesting new stuff with them. Because that's what Legacy did.

WWTD 233 - TRON: Legacy: Biodigital Jazz, Man
The first Tron was a one-of-a-kind visual odyssey into a digital world the likes of which had never been rendered. TRON: LEGACY would could be described the same way, but since technically the first Tron exists, it can't be. There are a lot of points of comparison between the two Disney films, obviously - both are visually arresting, both make even the most tech-savvy viewer feel like a grandparent trying to figure out which remote turns on the TV, both have multiple Jeff Bridges. This movie may be best enjoyed with your brain switched off so you can just enjoy the pretty lights and sounds, but unfortunately that's just not the business we're in on We Want The D.

I think he’s there still. I think I’d know if he wasn’t around anymore. I love Flynn and like, it’s all just code, isn’t it? Biodigital jazz... so, I think he’d come back. I think the Grid (the source code. the land) loves him as much as I love him

TRON: Legacy
Tumblr media
2010’s TRON: Legacy brought the technological world of The Grid back to the big screen for the first time since the original TRON back in 1982. Released on December 17th, 2010, the modern adaptation of the story of the journey of a son trying to save his father from the video game world he created stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde and was directed by Joseph Kosinski. A year after it’s release, the film had made over $400 million worldwide and had also won an Oscar for achievement in sound editing, Saturn awards for best music, costume, actor, and special effects. (IMDb)
TRON: Legacy is a visually stunning film with excellent effects and world creation. For the most part, it’s a CGI film, but, much to this author’s surprise, scenes like Kevin Flynn’s apartment and the End of Line Club were done on a real set. The costumes were created to look futuristic and techy with specially-made light strips to illuminate and perfectly fit the environment they’re in. When it comes down to it though, the soundtrack takes center stage as much as the CGI does. Daft Punk, French electronic music duo, was hired to compose all the music in a style that they’re truly masters in. There are orchestral-style tracks that bring out the emotion behind the scene and then they add just enough “biodigital jazz” to remind you who you’re really listening to when you hear the music. On occasion, Daft Punk goes beyond the cinematic song and delivers a track that not only fits the film but adds some more action to the scene. A perfect example of this is “Derezzed” during the End of Line Club attack. It has a solid beat which adds to the action of the scene and has the techno style of the film amped up just right.
At first glance, this film seems like it would be kind of odd and not really fit for the general audience due to the video game-like nature of the CGI but it had enough Walt Disney Pictures’ love to allow it to resonate with audiences even when the story isn’t like most films they’re used to. If you come for a good story, this one is easy to follow and rally behind. If you come for awesome uses of CGI, TRON if filled to the brim. If you come for the music, Daft Punk outdid themselves. If you come for all the above, well then, you’ll certainly love it. It’s honestly one of my favorite films for the above reasons and more and I can’t understate my opinion that I think it’s a must-see for any movie fan.

Middle of the Row – The Podcast: 130 – We Upload TRON: Legacy
We are flashing back to the futuristic TRON: Legacy! An almost great reboot that wanted to make a new series, but never quite got there. The score! The action! The effects! There is a lot to like, but what got in the way? Generic story? Generic characters? Where was the creative muscle put into the look when it comes to the story? At least we all agree Olivia Wilde is a blast and watching The Dude (Jeff Bridges) perform biodigital jazz is a lot of fun!
