CROMWELL UPDATE: We apologize for the delay in updating you all about Cromwell; it has been a very busy week researching and contacting dozens of veterinarians, surgeons, specialists, and sanctuaries with similar cases, and we had no concrete plan to share… until today. Cromwell will be going on a road trip with @nosh.on.plants and @_mother_of_chickens all the way to Purdue University to be placed under the care of Dr. Jan Hawkins, an expert large animal surgeon who is likeminded in regards to the ethics of our organization in to trying inventive procedures to give traditionally “farmed” animals a fair shot at successful recovery. Dr. Hawkins is confident he will be able to help Cromwell and may start by changing antibiotics and adding a supportive brace to treat the infection, followed by surgery and a bone graft if needed. If those are unsuccessful, he will amputate the toe to halt the spread of infection to try to save his life. We’re extremely grateful for him and the wonderful team at @bionicpets who has accepted Cromwell’s case should he need a prosthesis. Depending on where the amputation occurs, they will design a brace or prosthetic limb for him! Do we know if any of this will work? Not at all. Do we owe it to Cromwell to find out? Absolutely. If anything, our journey will hopefully inspire new learning and advancements in the care of these large “production” animals who most people don’t think twice about. If humans have selectively bred these individuals to become so large that they suffer health consequences as a result, then surely we can use our extensive resources, teamwork, and ingenuity to help save them from the mess we have created. If all goes according to plan, we leave the middle of this week, and will take you all along for the ride with frequent social media livestreams! P.S. We visited Crommy today and he’s doing well on his pain meds, just bored.
