Ruffed grouse. Or maybe small dinosaur. Or ferrel forest chicken. . Grouse have startled me more often than any other animal. They can be hard to spot and a bunch of times I've walked right up on one hiding behind a bush and it only flies off when I'm within a few feet. Since they're pretty big, it's pretty loud when they take flight. Big flapping ruckus jump scares are their specialty. Also, they often make weird monster-like sounds and especially when I was younger and didn't associate the sound with these silly sasquatch chickens, I'd get nervous hearing them. . I guess that's about all I have to say about grouse. How about this heat!? Hope wherever you live doesn't catch (or hasn't already caught) fire. I personally am like, mid-combustion. Can't sleep, can't work, just sweat and watch birds. . Oh, also, I took these pictures near a cool meadow where two endangered plants grow. It's protected, for good reason, but unfortunately that meant that I couldn't find an accessible spot to take a pretty picture. And the endangered flower I was after didn't seem to be blooming. . . . #grouse #ruffedgrouse #audubonsociety #coolbird #coolbirds #bestbirdshots #birdzoid #birdboy #birdnerd #birding #birders #leavenworth (at Camas Land) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQei3fgASux/?utm_medium=tumblr

Here I'm thinking about a pun involving George Bush and Dan Quayle because of how Quayle's are in and around bushes. However I feel that I am at least a decade too late and although I've never heard a good bush/quail pun, I am sure they've all been made, so I will leave that pun to the version of myself in the alternative dimension where quails reign supreme over the galaxy and Dan Quayle is actually the only surviving human having fully embraced quail culture and becoming accepted as one of their own. However, given that quails don't really understand English the potential puns were all lost on them. I'm not sure what becomes of me in this dimension, but I'm pretty sure in most alternative dimensions, I'm a bird so maybe I would have survived the quail revolution. Anyway, despite the extinction of all humans (except Dan) things are going pretty well and the quails are generally gentle and kind. They didn't actually murder the humans and only rose to power in the void left by the absence of humans and most other species (except Dan) which was totally the humans'' own responsibility. . So anyway, quails are ok. . . . #quail #quails #danquayle #californiaquail #bird #birds #birdzoid #birdphotography (at Leavenworth, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTDXSRwvbun/?utm_medium=tumblr

Duck! . It's back to being about the regular amount of hot here. . I took the afternoon off work and went for a relatively short 2 mile hike up to a waterfall yesterday. Between getting pretty out of shape the last few months, the heat, and hardly sleeping the past few days, it kind of kicked my butt. . It was nice and cool by the waterfall, but I actually didn't take any pictures. I couldn't find a good composition and I think it would take an ultrawide lens or some pretty dangerous climbing to get the whole waterfall in the frame. I did post a dumb selfie in my story, though. . On other news, I made another $0.99 selling stock photography today! I'm on my way to having earned enough at stock photography to buy a cabbage. I can't really recall how much a cabbage costs, but they're pretty cheap, right? I could buy a few and take weird photos of them and sell those photos as stock photography and then buy even more cabbages, drive up cabbage stocks and then sell them on ebay at a huge profit. #cabbagelife #cabbagetycoon . . . #duck #ducks #birdzoid #merganser #commonmerganser #mergansers (at Wenatchee, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ1WAELL5AQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

What's that bird, sir? He answered, Merganser. . These are a bunch of young mergansers that are nearly fully grown, but the boys will change outfits soon. You especially notice that they're immature when the one spreads it's wings and their like awkward little underdeveloped wings. So by human terms, they're smelly middle schoolers who are starting to look like adults but most certainly are not. However, most human adults quickly learn to control their new body odors by using deodorant and improving their hygiene, but most ducks never do that. However, they don't seem to smell. I guess they basically live in the bath. . Mergansers, like all ducks are anarchists so that explains why they don't use deodorant. Or wear pants. Both essentially mechanisms to subjugate the human body and coerce individuals into the the capitalist exchange of trading their labor for currency and currency for superfluous items like pants and deodorant. . Anyway, Mergansers do steal sometime. Like a handful of other duck species, they've been caught stealing nests. Ducks accept theft as a part of life, though. In fact, duck consider it a right to take what they need for survival. You may say, yah, well abolition of the state and personal property would bring chaos to the human world. But that's just because we're not well evolved for risk assessment. The costs of the protections you wrongly believe are gifts of the state include countless genocides and the destruction of the entire planet. . Among ducks, there's no large-scale conflict and violence which only really becomes common through the invention of the state. Ducks mostly congregate freely with one another for mutual benefit and to improve their chances against predators. They don't care much what species of duck or goose they associate with and there's very little need for competition among them. . . . #ducks #duck #merganser #mergansers #commonmerganser #commonmergansers #duckphotography #birdzoid #ducklings #flock #naturephotography #nature #outdoors #animals #wildlifeplanet #wildlife #duckduckgo #kropotkin (at Wenatchee, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQmqUGIADhG/?utm_medium=tumblr

More bird. All there is is bird. Bird, bird, bird. . Bird bird, bird bird bird. Bird, bird, bird bird. Bird bird, bird, bird bird. . This is an osprey. If you didn't know and wanted to know. Like your fancy backpack, but it carries itself. Next version will carry you. . After several months of frustration, I also figured out how to get my lens to focus a little better. So that's pretty cool. Basically, my lens doesn't really work with my camera, but there seems to be one shutter mode and lens stabilization setting combo that doesn't cause so much commotion.... literally, for some reason the shutter drops like a hammer and the lens stabilization shoots around like a rubber band. Also, bird. . I sort of like these photos, but the light is bad and I had to take in some color in the sky because the osprey was really dark and I way overexposed to try to get some detail on it. Still had to max out the highlights and shadow sliders, though. . I finally saw a moose today, but didn't get a photo. Finally, I went back to the eagle nest and took the same photos over again, but better. Better light, sharper, etc. . I need a new laptop with a color accurate display. These photos look way different between my laptop and phone and idk which is correct. Need to start a gobirdme. Jk. Probably starting a boring new consulting job next week. But also, but all my photos so I don't have to work. Work sucks. Rock pigeons. Pigeons rock. I prefer to see them in nature than in a city, but I also thought the bridge made an interesting background. . If there are more than two pigeons in the world and pigeons are always either in a city or not in a city, then there must be at least two pigeons in either the city or not in the cite because they have nowhere else to go. So maybe I shouldn't complain about pegeons in the city. . Oh boy, he's doing another one of those nonsensical rants again. Nope! This is actually an important concept in mathematics called the pigeonhole principal. It's useful for matching socks, too. Say you have n different styles of socks and they're all mixed up in the laundry. You're digging through frustrated my the fact that you even have to wear socks in the first place when no other animal does, but you wonder if you'll ever find a match. Set all the socks in a pile and in the very worst case scenario the (n+1)st sick has to match the others in the pile. Or if you have 10 pigeons clucking around and only 9 holes for the pigeons to go in, you'll have to put two pigeons in one hole. And that's ACTUALLY why it's called the pigeon hole principal. But you think I'm the weird one?? You dont see me stuffing pigeons in holes and if I were, I think I'd at least make enough holes that they could choose if they want a hole to themselves or to share. That's really none of my business. As long as it's consensual and no one is getting hurt, how many pigeons go in a hole is their own business. Isn't math a rollercoaster? . Anyway, even though pigeon hole principal isn't exclusively for placing pigeons and is actually kind of obvious its pretty important to prove other stuff. . Crow was making a funny sound, so I took a picture of the funny sound it made. If only there was another type of media that could better capture sound... Till then, you'll just have to use your imagination. Or maybe you heard a crow making a sound. Or maybe you can ask your the Goog. . Crows are cool but I don't really take pictures of them usually. Partly because it's hard to get a very good exposure of a black bird with a bright sky. In the full sized images, you can see some pretty good detail of its face and the sky is still blue so I figured these were worth sharing. . . . #crow #crows #corvidsofinstagram #corvid #corvids #corvidae #corvid21 #birdzoid #birdworld #birdwatchingphotography #birdwatchers_daily #birdwatchersofinstagram #birdzoid (at Montana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNAcPiGg927/?igshid=1tisxief0sl15

Maybe a Western Wood-Pewee There are a bunch of little flycatchers that all look the same to a neophyte birdzoid such as myself. . Anyway, bird bird, blah blah. I was highly restrained and only shared 9 photos of the same bird instead of 10. It's critical that you observe it looking in various different directions with a couple slightly differing backgrounds. If not, it could alter the timeline in unforseeable ways leading to a catastrophic season finale event. For example, maybe in the alternative timeline, I shared only 8 photos and having not seen the one where the bird looks slightly down and to the right, you saw the same bird and desperately wanted to see it look down and to the right. So much so that you leaned too far over the bridge and fell in the water. Don't worry, you're ok, but you never ended up taking your grandchild to that spot because you'd had that unpleasant incident. So long story short, your grandchild never ends up curing the 2070 bird flu that wipes out all birds on earth and most humans. Don't even ask what happens in the alternative timeline when I post 10 photos of this bird. Just trust me and thank your bird-god that I posted 9 and life as we know it remains intact. . . . #flycatcher #flycatchers #westernwoodpewee #woodpewee #pewee #willowflycatcher #tyrantflycatcher #tyrantflycatchers #tyrannidae #birdzoid #birdwatchingphotography #washingtonaudubon #washingtonstate #birdwatching #birding (at Icicle Gorge, Leavenworth, Wa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQMUAQCAgVk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Been a little sicky and a little busy lately but here's an eastern kingbird. . What's this, then? Miein bird-kin, Pine siskin. . Strange dumb rhyme, by strange dumb man. Bird not liable. . You probably can't see on phone screen, but birdo has seeds in mouth. After watching them a while, I had this absurd thought that maybe I should buy some sunflower seeds for them... They have practically an infinite seed supply supplied by nature right now. . Anyway, I sort of like this concept of looking through stuff at stuff lately. Like rather than always trying to get the clearest and closest close-up, I have been trying to sort of place the critters in the frame into the nature into a photo. Ok, if anyone is actually trying to follow my nonsense, I just mean trying to have something in the foreground of wildlife pictures. . I had been trying that with my duck photos a few weeks ago, but didn't like how they turned out. I like that dark deer photo I posted and this one quite a bit, though. I don't have a good duck spot in Washington yet. . It might be cool in some cases to try to get more of the foreground in focus, too. Maybe that means challenging myself to try shooting wider. Idk, I just like taking pictures of the critters. I just do what I want, ok? I'm usually happy just to get any picture of any wildlife and haven't really had any superb wildlife experiences lately. Better skip work today and try to fix that. . Also, TBH, I'm starting to sort of like my job and there are no fixed hours, so I take a day off whenever I feel like it, but also pretty often work 15 hours straight. I don't know if I like that I sort of like it. I've never really been able to let these waring parts of myself coexist. The robot man in my brain that likes math and programming kills the little baby man in my brain that has at least a capacity to develop some creativity and humanity. Then there's this little bird flapping around in there. More GBH. I guess everyone following me is used to me posting tons of very slightly different photos of the same thing. Whatever. Call it my style or something. Like, imagine some guy with a thin moustache and french accent who reeks of wine standing way too close to you talking a bunch of modern art mumbojumbo and how ze Boredin illustrated the nuance and complexity of intersubjectivity between man and bird through his series of very many very similar but slightly different frames of the same bird thus drawing the viewer into his own internal world and personal struggled with birdzoid personality disorder. . During this whole conversation, you keep subtly taking steps back because the close-talking wino is totally invading your personal space, but at this point you've backed yourself up against a wall and feel completely stuck and you're starting to have an anxiety attack. All the while some pack of gross old yachties wearing all white outfits that are so old and stained that it looks like if you even breathed too hard on them, they'd crack and crumble into a pile of sand exposing more of their already criminally overexposed gross shriveled-up-old-football skin and they're lucky talking about how they have original Andy Warhol paintings in their yacht but they're terribly water damaged. It's all just too much. Why do such wealthy people live like castaway rats? Why do they try to constantly tell people they're wealthy and cultured but show up lurk around marinas like skeletor. Terrible insufferable bunch of leaches who epitomize everything you see wrong with society. And then one puts their horrible boney hands on your shoulder and it feels like it pierces your skin and you just can't bear the anxiety anymore. An art show is literally the last place in the world you'd ever willing to go. You don't even know how you wound up here and this anxiety feels like your heart might explode and your head shoot off like a rocket. But the thought of all these terrible scumbags applauding your spontaneous combustion as some performance art and pretending to 'get it' is just enough for you to hold it together. You shove the wino on the floor, elbow the Yachty and run for it. (at Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSQf9i-LgdX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Seagull narrowly escapes death in harrowing escape as local wildfires cause rare sky combustion event, local lunatic reports. . As wildfires rage across the western US and smoke chokes out humans all across the nation, local bird lunatic claims to have captured this rare sky-combustion event while cavorting with a family of otters. When asked for comment, the birdzoid man only made a series of squawks and chirps and hopped around flapping his arms. Unclear whether the man was simply imitating a bird or believed himself to be one, the interviewer was unable to solicit any cogent response from the man before he disappeared into the sea. While no further details about the source of the sky fire incident are available at this time, local experts investigating the matter say we're definitely all fcked. . . . #sunset #seagull #travel #beach #nature #photography #ocean #bird #photooftheday #love #california #beautiful #birds #travelphotography #naturephotography #landscape #instagood #sky #sea #sanfrancisco #summer #picoftheday #seagulls #adventure #sunrise #wanderlust #birdsofinstagram #sun #travelgram #waves, I'm using application (at Port Angeles, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSNo0cmFSjy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Couple landscapes. . I really like the 1st one. Anyway, I took these where sitting around a beaver den, but they never came out. As hard as I try to get wildlife photos, people usually like landscapes more, anyway. . IDK. I think I had something on my mind while I was out hiking that I was gonna tell instagram about, but now I forgot. . Oh yeah, it was this idea of "making" photos rather than taking photos. People say ansel adams said you don't take photos, you make them. I bet that quote is also made up. And when I hear people say it, I think it sounds a little pompous. I never cared one bit about ansel adams, but to his credit when (if) he said that the process of taking and developing photos was a lot more involved and I guess he had some complex system of doing it to make his pictures. . Taking pictures can be more or less involved today. Pretty much anyone can take a quick snapshot with their phone that looks pretty good. Ones approach can certainly can be more artistic and/or technical and maybe at the height of fine art photography it's right to say the photographer entirely made the photo. Obviously not every aspect, but they probably did enough with the composition that it's beyond what anyone would ever observe. . But whatever I do is not at all that. Something like that is fun to try once in a while but not very interesting to me. The best I figure is that I just love nature and try to curate unique images of the parts that catch my attention. Maybe that sounds pretentious, too. As I'm typing this I realize I really don't care and it doesn't matter. I just like to take pictures and I like that other people like to look at them. I guess as a birdzoid, that sort of visual communication creates as much human connection as I need or want and anything much more or less would stress me out. It's also a way of feeling like I'm at least producing something in my hermitage. . . . #landscapes #landscape_lover #landscape_perfection #kootenai #kootenainationalwildliferefuge #bonnersferry #northernidaho #visitidaho #landscapecaptures #landscapephotographer #landscapephotography #landscape_photography (at Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CN6G8ZygaOq/?igshid=uy0gpgkc77dg

Yeah, seagulls are common but so are you and probably you post pictures of yourself sometimes and no one wants to make you feel bad about yourself, well maybe some people do, but forget about them. Well, unless you're a terrible person or something who needs to do some serious introspection about what kind of people you are. But people like that probably don't feel insecure about photos of themselves and would easily dismiss any negative comment. . Anyway, my point here is that assuming these seagulls are decent people, we shouldn't even raise the question about whether their photos are worth sharing. That kind of thing could lead to a lifetime of self doubt and insecurity. And yes, maybe that would help them develop as an artist and intellectual and that crippling doubt and anxiety would wind up being the motivation for all the accomplishments they're most proud of. Maybe they'd even look back on their miserable life and decide they wouldn't change a thing. . Still, happy, confident and generally well adjusted seagulls are also capable of brilliance. Even if we grow through suffering, that doesn't validate the suffering or justify our roles in causing others to suffer. I think we should all just try to help each other be ok and not worry that the world will run out of sources of struggle that breed important thought and art. . We can appreciate these photos and that seagull can become whoever it wants. No seagull should be condemned to be the Camus of seagulls. Probably someone always will be, but we don't have to push them down that miserable lonely path. . Just like the dang photo and move on. Don't screw up these seagulls lives. . Plus, these are probably higher quality photos than your linkedin headshot or whatever. . Ok, gotta go set up LinkedIn accounts for these birds.
