Does Anyone Else Remember that Meredith-Anne Pierce Series
With the murder unicorns. The first one is Birth of the Firebringer and it’s literally three pencil thin kids books-- but because they’re old there’s violence and a whole OH NO IT’S INCEST plotline with UNICORNS.

About a month ago, I lent a colleague Birth of the Firebringer, which is my favorite book in the whole world. You read that book and like it and we will find a way to be friends, that book is like the core of my personality.
Yesterday she walked in with it and told me how much she loved it and wanted to sit down and talk about the world and the characters and how much she loved Tek and Tek's mom. And she asked for me to please bring the other two books because she has more time and she can't wait to read them.
Friendship level 3 just insta-unlocked.

2022 in review, part 5: novel first reads
my top ten favorite first reads of this year! more or less! idk it’s harder for me to rank books than other kinds of media sometimes, i feel like. i did my best.
1. wolfsong by t.j. klune (2015)
i already wrote a very long review of this so i’m not gonna rehash it here, but yeah this is a gay werewolf book with a very unique/artistic writing style and i’m pretty sure the main character is literally otherkin. (they don’t use the word “otherkin” but his experiences line up so well it’s kind of scary.) obviously i’m a fan.
2. wolf-speaker by tamora pierce (1994)
omfg i need to get back to this series i love tamora pierce’s writing style so much. i keep alternating between kicking myself that i didn’t read these as a kid & celebrating the fact that i get to read them all now. but, yeah, i need to get back to this series. and her stuff in general.
3. any way the wind blows by rainbow rowell (2021)
this is far & away the best book of the simon snow series. it’s just such a godsdamned satisfying ending.
i mean, okay, i do find it a little off-putting that i’m meant to believe that penny is heterosexual, but we can’t win ‘em all. but also we get to see her rules lawyer a fucking demon??? and be a stone cold badass in the process? so i can’t really complain about how that went.
the writing of simon & baz’s intimacy with each other was fucking sublime. it was so heartful & honest, i just ached for them.
i’m a little disappointed that this was such a definitive ending because i could’ve kept following these characters for like a dozen more books, but honestly it was such a perfect ending it’s kind of hard to argue with it.
4. birth of the firebringer by meredith ann pierce (1985)
yeah i can’t imagine what i found appealing about the unicorn book with narration from what feels like an awfully authentic animal headspace whose culture is SUPER pagan and where the main perils are 1) vore, 2) mind control, 3) literally a tornado. just truly drawing a blank here.
5. wayward son by rainbow rowell (2019)
i’m so glad the harry potter books never did an american roadtrip because holy shit it would have been insufferable. this, on the other hand, is brilliant.
everyone at ren fairs is apparently actually a witch or supernatural creature? vampires run las vegas? techbros are trying to contract vampirism for incredibly dumb reasons? yes, yes, yes. perfect.
6. star trek: discovery: dead endless by dave galanter (2019)
we gays are so powerful, you guys. i mean, the fucking butterfly effect of the awful season 1 of discovery unironically employing the bury your gays trope resulting in us ending up with this profic au where culber’s ghost finds his way onto a discovery commanded by a michael burnham who never mutineed and has family dinners with fleet captain georgiou & surrogate sibling saru, and he just immediately starts making out with au stamets who starts working on bending the laws of physics to the will of his multiverse gay love story.
sometimes profic is just fanfic with resources & a stamp of legitimacy, and when it is it’s glorious.
7. star trek: discovery: fear itself by james swallow (2018)
the discovery novels are shockingly good. like, this one is so action packed while also being such a great character study of saru. it honestly surpasses what the show was doing contemporaneously. i’d really like to see more comics or novels set on the shenzhou.
8. murder on the orient express by agatha christie (1934)
this was almost certainly hindered by the fact that i had seen so many adaptations of it by the time i read it that i felt like i had already read it, but i nevertheless enjoyed it quite a bit and am eager to read more mystery novels (and christie novels specifically.)
9. lunatic fringe by allison moon (2011)
patient worldbuilding, imperfect but well-meaning characters having mostly (mostly) good-faith conflicts over strategy, and L E S B I A N   W E R E W O L V E S. yeah, that’ll work.
10. blood and chocolate by annette curtis klause (1997)
this book’s picture is in the dictionary under “problematic fave,” but this really is delightful if you can get past all the ways in which it’s awful. and i can, clearly.

What's your favourite fictional character (any or all media)?
God, I just don't know, because it changes as I grow and change.
Bigwig, Tailchaser, Molly Grue, Quentin Sollys, Mildmay Foxe, Antonio Banderas, Ezio, Tek (Birth of the Firebringer), Murderbot, Jack Wolcott, Lucian (Underworld), Aaravos, Boromir, there's so many. Endlessly. So many I'm not remembering. Our books and DVDs are packed up, I can't go looking. But they spring to mind. There isn't really anything that unites them. Just what I needed or wanted or found very dear at the time.

Dream Starkid Jangle Ball Tour: Villain Song Setlist
So, I'm super excited about the Jangle Ball. Even if they don't play where I am, I'm just so happy they're going to tour again after all these years!
I've been randomly pondering what my dream set list for the 'Villain Song" section of the tour would be. If digital tickets are released and I see they have completely different songs, then that's totally awesome and pretty likely! I'd enjoy it a wild amount either way. This is just a little fun thing for me to think about and basically, me listing y personal favourite Starkid villain songs.
I tried to include mostly villain songs, but some are a stretch, some are Starkid tour classics and some are songs I just really want to see a live version of. I know they've said in livestreams that any song can be twisted (ha!) into a villain song, and they want to perform some songs in ways that they haven't been performed before, maybe with different performers than the originals. And they said they wanted to change up the set list a bit for different locations. That sounds very fun! And yep, my list is far too long for half a concert but I can't control myself.
My Dream Jangle Ball Setlist:
Twisted - Twisted
Let it Out - TGWDLM
Do you want to play? - Black Friday
The Web I Spin for You - NMT1
Into the Night - Firebringer
Different as Can Be - AVPM (Omg if AJ sang for Voldemort I would be so happy because all I want in life is an AJ Holmes and Brian Rosenthal duet)
Tumblr media
Axe Man - NMT2
Not Your Seed - TGWDLM
Change in the Climate - Firebringer
Virginity Rocks - NMT2
Tumblr media
Listen to Your Heart - MAMD (If the choice rested in my hands, I would list every MAMD song for this tour. Every single one xD)
Tumblr media
Join Us (And Die) - TGWDLM (I cannot stress how important it is that this song goes right before Kick it Up a Notch! I need Jaime to belt "It's time to diiiiiiiiie" at the beginning and I need "all you gotta do is-" to transition straight into 'Kick it Up a Notch'. It is essential to everyone's well-being that this happens!!)
Kick it Up a Notch - Starship
Rogues Are We - HMB
Granger Danger - AVPM
Guys Like Potter - AVPS (If Tyler Brunsman doesn't join the cast, then Brian Rosenthal as Lucius and if Joe Moses doesn't join, then Brian Holden for Snape!)
The Way I Do - Starship
Tumblr media
Wagon on Fire - TTO
Tumblr media
Missing You - AVPM (I'm guessing it's unlikely Darren will join them (but you never know!), so James for Harry!)
Wizard of the Year (Gilderoy) - AVPSY
Big T's Temptation - MAMD (please, it's all I've wanted since birth. No one will ever understand how much I love Big T and this song *cries*)
Tumblr media
It's Not Over Yet - AVPS (If Tyler Brunsman doesn't reprise the role, then Brian Holden as Lucius!)
Tumblr media
Going Back to Hogwarts - AVPM (The Villain is the old, majestic owl who lost my letter to Starkid's Hogwarts, gave it to that infamous Hogwarts Jaguar, who, with his soft adorable paws that he trips over when he's running too fast, took out a knife and put it in the shredder all those years ago. That rat bastard!)
Tumblr media
What would be your dream Jangle Ball Tour 'Villain Song' setlist? If you can twist it into a villain song, then pretty much any song is fair game!

Le Comfort Tags
this is going to be long
these tags are brought to you by @burntotears
Comfort Movie(s): 2005 Pride & Prejudice, Jurassic Park, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, and Under the Tuscan Sun. Can't remember how well some of those aged...
Comfort Food (s): (okay so for about 9 months I had long covid before we had vaccines, which means, weirdly, my body developed allergies to a lot of foods I could tolerate previously. Old faves have *)
Cheese, big glass of Milk*, Pizza*, Tortellini Alfredo*, Miso Soup, Diet Coke*, Oat Milk Ice Cream, Teriyaki Salmon, Petit Fours*, Pastry Cream*.
Comfort Clothing: A very oversized T Shirt and nothing else or baggy pants and a velvet crop top. Very specific but it's my favorite thing to wear when I'm being cozy. I do like big sweaters but if I get overheated the feeling is ruined immediately.
Comfort Song(s): I apologize in advance but there's no way to make this short. Daydreaming means I'm always switching between a line up of songs that transport my brain to other places or set off specific feelings. Some probably don't sound comfortable per se but the familiarity is what gets me. A few have been my go-to escapism songs for well over a decade. And of course the line up is always in flux. Also, like, fanfic mood music is a must yo.
BZY-The Earth Laughs In Flowers Jean Dawson - Pirate Radio The 1975 - Happiness Great Heart - Johnny Clegg & Savuka the verve - bittersweet symphony Deco - bittersweet symphony New Radicals - You Get What You Give Tracy Chapman - Crossroads Temple of the Dog(aka soundgarden and pearl jam) - Hunger Strike ODESZA - Line Of Sight Steve Conte - Call Me Call Me The Midnight - We Move Forward Savage Garden - I Want You Stewart Copeland (yes from the police) - Misty Bog (spyro the dragon) Angels & Airwaves - The Adventure Broke for Free - A Beautiful Life Cressida- 6am (Kyau & Albert Remix) Niklas Harding & Arcane- Ice Beach Michael Cassette - Wateresque Nitrous Oxide - North Pole Fire Flowerz - Sugar
Technically you could probably put any intro and outro from the og toonami line up on this list. I stg it's like getting smacked in the face with nostalgia to hear anything from that time.
*if a song is like 8 minutes jump ahead 2. That usually gets you past the warm up.
Comfort Book(s): The Birth of the Firebringer, Vol 1. of the Sailor Moon manga, Pride and Prejudice (specifically the audio version by the sleepy bookshelf) which is also on spotify, and probably ACOMAF (the rest can rot but I still love that ONE book.)
Comfort Game(s): Spyro the Dragon (I know this game too well), Tomba 1 & 2, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon DS Cute, Dewprism/Threads of Fate.
Comfort Streamers:
Tbh although I check in with a handful of streamers from time to time Ray is probably who I watch the most. Quick wit, sarcasm, and snark are my favorite things, so Ray is my go-to. (yes, that Ray. He escaped RT a long time ago. It's a whole thing that's been talked about by him. He's a safe one, don't worry.)
RayNarvaezJr.
dude plays pretty much anything and everything but if I had to rec somewhere to start go with either pokemon or stardew if you want chill vibes, or watch his plays of any of the resident evil or yakuza games for fuckery.
Comfort Youtube Channels:
I'm adding this because I use a few when I'm overwhelmed and need something familiar or gentle to watch. Separate from gaming stuff.
Kennie JD - Bad movies and a beat playlist (kennie is just hysterical anyway but omg these reviews. The Twilight ones in particular get me every time.
Anti-Chef - Watch Jamie attempt to cook through Julia Child's cookbooks. It's very charming and you're always rooting for him. He's very real about the process which is nice.
Dominic Noble - Lost in Adaptation. Exactly what it sounds like. Books vs Film and TV but he's also not an ass about it so it's a pleasant experience.
nigiricco - Bento videos like every three days it's wild but imo soothing to watch.
Sophia Phan - Movie Commentaries. She's adorable.
Imamu room - MORE BENTO
Joconde's baking - Really soothing baking videos imo as long as you don't mind the sound of it. Like almost asmr if that helps.
Chocolate Cacao - The master of baking chocolate I stg
José - Video essays and damn good retrospectives including scrubs, that 70s show, boy meets world, the golden girls, cheers, the fresh prince etc.
The Movie Budz - More great film commentary
PBS Idea Channel - Okay so this channel has been dead for 6 years now but it's STILL full of amazing videos that I have yet to see matched in their depth and scope. Plus it's nearly all pop culture which keeps it fun an accessible. If you aren't familiar with PBSID I highly suggest sifting through the archive. There are videos on everything from The Pokemon War Theory to How Does Night Vale Confront Us With the Unknown?
Hbomberguy - The dude with the Pathologic video. His other stuff is really good too.
Folding Ideas - Video essays and commentary plus some really good deep dives into other subjects like NFTs, Flat Earthers, and the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings uh adaptation?
Primitive Technology - Okay, you know those videos YT recs where it looks like two guys built a hotel out of bamboo or something but it's clearly fake? This is the guy they're mimicking.
Peaceful Cuisine - Mostly vegan and/or gluten free cooking. Most videos have an asmr version and a version with soft music playing.
Tumblr media
Was all of that necessary? Probably not. I am now tired. To think I trimmed down what I was going to add.
Tagging folks but like everyone feel free to do it, and no you don't have to do all the categories I did. I added the youtube videos and went kinda wild with music.
Going by my activity page again otherwise this will be too long

Mr zipper the collection obsession

Mr zipper the collection obsession series#
I have a vase, some Christmas ornaments, and a couple of hand crafted neat piggy banks, and a painting my great aunt did of a pig. Just here and there if we see cute figurines, or paintings. I COLLECT pigs, but they are not an obsession. I have a lot of health related books, which is good I suppose since I'm going into the health professions. I have countless books of poetry from before 1900. I have a signed copy of the children's book No Jumping on the Bed. I have a first edition of a children's book about an Arabian horse by Walter Farley (wrote the Black Stallion). I have a first edition of Birth of the Firebringer.
Mr zipper the collection obsession series#
I have all of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series in first edition. I try to get fine literature as my only fiction, and then lots of informative books. I have a small book shelf (three shelves ) dedicated to cookbooks. I have actually reduced my library by about 60% and still have two tall shelves and two small shelves. When the dolls come in, and she opens the box the husband records her as she is in "labor, giving birth." The due date is the date the doll is delivered. She takes the 5 year old doll out shopping too, such as for shoes. She takes care of them over three hours a day. She also says her ultimate reborn doll is one that looks like it its breathing. She also says she likes flaws on her 'babies' because it makes them more real. She says that she loves how they're so creepy.the daughter likes the dolls too because they each have a "different" personality. The husband says its no different than a mom that takes care of a real child. She has one named "Tina" which is a living dead doll that has horns that moves and talks. She sits them down to dinner and everything. The one that is one right now collects those porcelain dolls.the creepy realistic ones, reborns. Hahahahahahahah.one kid was just on it that was a collector of vacuums.he services them and stuff. My Ranking of the Starkid Musicals including spies are forever, even though it's tcb, because it's amazing and underrated. (I don't dislike any of their musicals I think they're amazing and this is my personal opinion so I hope this doesn't offend anyone.) Enjoy <3
13. Me and my dick
Tumblr media
I mean technically this is the oldest Starkid musical so it's the worst quality but also it's kind of uncomfortable to watch. Although it's still got some great music, memes and comedy. And AJ Holmes as Joey's heart is just fantastic.
12. Black Friday
Tumblr media
Black Friday had a much higher budget than their other musicals that I feel they were biting off more than they could chew. It just wasn't up to usual Starkid standards. The plot and storyline was hard to follow, I wasn't fond of the songs or the characters except for Linda Monroe, she carried the whole thing.
11. A Very Potter Senior Year
Tumblr media
"IT'S A VERY POTTER SENIOR YEAR, SENIOR YEAR. WE'RE NOT JUST KIDS ANYMOOOORRRREEEEE!" Sorry that's stuck in my head on repeat. Obviously this wasn't as great as it could of been cuz they had very little time to rehearse, but I do appreciate the casting. Like AJ and Darren and Evanna Lynch?? Like hello?? Anyway yeah the acting wasn't up to usual standard but the way they improvised created some hilarious moments. Also it has very good music. Like sidekick cmon.
10. Holy musical b@tman
Tumblr media
I do give credit to this musical cuz I don't like DC superhero stuff at all, but I still really enjoyed this. Even though I only recognized some characters and probably didn't understand any Batman references I still think this show is great. It's funny, well directed and has some great songs. Also Brolden had an amazing performance.
9. Ani: A parody
Tumblr media
Ani is extremely underrated and, in my opinion, for no reason. People complain that there's not the 'classic' casting, but I think everyone were amazing and it was casted really well. Also the thing about the actors not singing. Like we got Clark and Peirce. They KILLED it. I think Ani has some of the best songs and is arguably one of the funniest starkid musicals. The jokes are delivered brilliantly and even made me (who btw hates star wars) laugh. I mean Nick Lang is absolutely brilliant aswell. It deserves more recognition so if you haven't seen it, please go watch it.
8. A very potter musical
Tumblr media
I'm gonna get flamed for not ranking it higher. I mean this is the classic. It's my and probably most people's introduction to Starkid, so that's why it's special. This also has birthed so many memes and jokes, I could reference it all day. The songs are classic, the acting (especially lauren) is on point, it's hilarious and you can always go back to it. It's just so rewatchable. And quirrelmort. That's all.
7. Trail to Oregon
Tumblr media
This is so brilliantly written, Jeff Blim did such a good job. It's absolutely hilarious. The fact the musical is made from improv and breaking the forth wall is honestly genius. It's got amazing acting despite the whole point of the musical, the songs are great and it's probably the one Starkid musical I would most wanted to see live.
6. A very potter sequel
Tumblr media
In my opinion this is the best of the very potter trilogy. The characters are better, like Lucius, Umbridge, Remus. The songs are funny, classic and great. There isn't really much to say about it, it's a classic Starkid show.
5. Spies are forever
Tumblr media
This show is so well written. The comedy is so raw and natural, like there aren't any cringey or over exaggerated bits, just subtle yet effective humor. Also Tatiana and Curt's relationship is one of my favourites ever. I love how they took the mick out of cliche heteronormality and instead created an openly gay main character without the main focus being their sexuality. And the soundtrack is AMAZING like it's so good.
4. Firebringer
Tumblr media
I really don't understand the hate for Firebringer. I think it's a really interesting and fun concept and it works really well as a comedy musical. And speaking of which it's a comedy and it definitely achieves that. I do think this movie is funny, with the general jokes, the forth wall breaking and schoopsie is honestly comedy gold. I also love how realistically they portayed art in this with comments like 'I can't draw feet' and 'well this one sucks'. I just thought the whole thing was very clever. Starkid really said Bisexual rights.
3. Starship
Reached the 10 photo limit :'(( I HATE TUMBLR.
Is it possible to have a comfort musical? Because this is mine. It's just so authentic to watch. There are good villains without loads of motif and trauma just a bug who likes to kill people and a person who like to kill bugs. The protagonist is lovable with good passion and a dream. In fact all the characters are memorable and interesting. It's not the funniest StarKid production I've seen but some jokes really hit like especially the one with Commander Up and Bug. And I love the songs too. It's just a well rounded, overall great show.
2. The guy who didn't like musicals
I know this might be basic but this musical is great. The whole thing is very clever with all of Paul's comments about 'never being in a musical' is brilliant. Also we have a few new cast members like Jon and Maria which was really nice and refreshing. All the characters are interesting and lovable in some way, with very fun and well portrayed interactions. The songs aren't my favorite but they are VERY catchy with a few amazing exceptions like Show stoppin number and Not your seed. The humour is really good and the acting is astounding like they don't get enough credit. Lauren, Corey, Jon and many others had such a great performance and they did a great job with the choreography. If you haven't seen it I would definitely recommend.
1. Twisted
Welp we all saw this one coming. Where do I even begin with Twisted? It's phenomenal. Lots of StarKid shows are still very good quality but I usually just watch them for the humour which is the main focus of the plays but Twisted is the whole package. It's so good I would rank it in my favourite musicals ever, not just StarKid. For a start the characters are amazing. Jafar is definitely my favourite, Dylan does such a good job. He creates a humorous character yet still evokes so much emotion he's such a deep character it's amazing. Also oh my god, Dylan's voice in this musical is phenomenal. And where is his oscar? Which leads me into the music. StarKid usually comes up solid with their music, they have amazing lyricists but Twisted's songs are on a new level. They range from absolutely hilarious and catchy like No one Remembers Achmed, to charmingly beautiful like A Thousand and One Nights to brilliantly deep and meaningful bangers like If I Believed. They really knocked it out of the park, the songs can be extremely funny like Take off your clothes which is litterly a re-written version of A whole new world to highlight Disney's sexual undertones. (Like that's genius). But can also be powerfully emotional like The power in me which lead me to tears. Wow I've been rambling which just shows how good this musical is so go watch it. Today. Thank you <3.
That was my ranking thank you for reading, if you can't tell I adore everything about this silly yet amazing group of people. Make sure to look for more rankings and other StarKid content from me. Satan is a real man goodbye <3

My favourite book of all time is Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce. It’s about a tribe of warrior unicorns and I think I’ve read it approximately 88 thousand times. The copy I have is from the original printing in 1985 and is very worn and water damaged but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. This book has influenced my writing style, but for some reason I have never looked up other books by this author.
On my birthday a few years ago, my mother bought me two more books and it turns out my favourite book of all time was the first in a trilogy. Holy fuck how did I not know that?? So I read them and they weren’t as good as my favourite book of all time, but still pretty great.
Why am I telling you this? Because I was looking for them to re-read (again) and couldn’t find them anywhere BUT I still have my original copy of that first book. I was reminded of how long I’ve owned it and how much joy it has brought me. It was my happy thought today - just an old book full of old memories.

I have adored unicorns ever since I was old enough to read—and considering I taught myself to read board books in preschool, that’s a long time!  So, suffice to say, I have consumed a lot of unicorn books in my time.  There was a time as a young elementary school student that I had read every single book in the local library about unicorns, and was ordering further books through interlibrary loan and buying copies from bookstores to sate my desire.  I was the kid who bought blank books, threw them in a bag with a pencil and a camera, and went out into the woods to search for signs of unicorns, taking notes on suspicious deer beds or footprints that might actually belong to the forest unicorn that I was convinced was there somewhere (to be honest, I’m still not convinced it’s not there).
If you yourself like unicorns, or you know a child who does, then this is just the recommendation post for you!
Uni the Unicorn by Amy Rouse Rosenthal and Brigette Barrager [preschool] – an adorable picture book, Uni the Unicorn is convinced that little girls are a made up creature, but dreams of becoming friends with one.  With adorable artwork and a sugar sweet story of friendship, this is a great first unicorn book for younger kids.
The Unicorn’s Secret series by Kathleen Duey [for elementary age] – this was one of my first series about unicorns, and you better believe I was waiting excitedly for every book that came out!  The story is about a young orphaned girl who finds a horse about to give birth: and when the baby turns out to be a unicorn, she just knows that she has to protect it.  A great introductory elementary school series for young kids who want to get into fantasy!
Unicorns of Balinor series by Mary Stanton [elementary age] – I almost hesitated to add this one to the list because well…the series never finished. (I know, one of my childhood’s BIGGEST disappointments EVER). However, considering how important it was to me as a kid, I can’t just leave it out.  Ari lives on a farm with her dear friend, the horse Chase, until the pair of them fall through a magic tunnel and end up in another world—a world where supposedly, she’s actually Princess Arianna with amnesia, and her horse is a unicorn prince called Sunchaser! This was a beautifully woven world of beautiful, gem-colored unicorns and epic battles with the creature that killed Arianna’s family, and although the series was never completed, it’s honestly a must-read for unicorn lovers.
Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce [middle – high school] – the first in an epic trilogy, Jan, the prince of the unicorns, gets himself into trouble with his arrogance and ends up on a massive quest in which the mysterious prophecy of the Firebringer looms over his head. It’s been ages since I’ve read this book and I desperately want to read it again, but this is a unicorn story in the tradition of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern, with an epic unicorn society that is a treat to read.
Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville [middle school]  Cara jumps from the belltower to reach the magical land of Luster, a land of magic and unicorns, and goes on a journey to fight against the mysterious Beloved, who wants to kill the unicorns.  This was one of my favorite stories as a child, and I think it has one of the most fascinating takes on the way that unicorn magic functions.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle [middle – high school] what would this list be without the ultimate unicorn book?  A whimsical and beautifully written tale full of story-telling prose, this tells the tale of a unicorn who believes she may be the last of her kind,  and goes on a quest to find out what happened to her fellows.  I also HIGHLY recommend the graphic novelization!  The art is an absolute treasure, and really adds that haunting flavor to the book’s almost melancholy mood.
Avalon: Web of Magic series by Rachel Roberts [middle school] while not technically a book just about unicorns, unicorns play a major role in this epic middle school fantasy series, and I can’t ever pass up a chance to talk about one of my favorite childhood series!  Emily, Adriane, and Kara, three very different girls, all find that the mysterious Ravenswood Preserve in town is home to some very old magic connected to another magical world by the magic web. Together with their magical animal friends, they must combine their new magical powers to protect the web from the dark sorceress who wants to steal the magic of all animals for  herself
The Secret World of Unicorns by Pat Perrin [elementary – middle school] This book was absolutely my bible as a child!  A field guide to the kinds of unicorns across the world, it not only tells you exactly what signs to look for to know that a unicorn is in the area, but it boasts beautiful images of so many different unicorns—it even comes with little unicorn figurines!  I got so excited when I finally remembered the title of this book again that I ordered it off of Amazon to replace my lost copy almost immediately!
There are so many more unicorn books out there now that even I haven’t heard of until I started making this list!  I can’t make any cases for those until I read them, but I think this is probably a good start.  Who knows, maybe I’ll make a new list once I have more unicorn books to talk about!
