Okay. this is something that’s been building in my head for a while. But monotremes are criminally underrated in media.

Yeah, we have Perry the Platypus and Knuckles the Echidna.

But excluding them and their associated characters how many monotreme characters can you think of?

I’ve looked around and so far I’ve only been able to find three shows for platypus and two for echidnas

on the platypus’ side they are the feature animal for an episode of octonauts, there’s Alice from the koala brothers and Flap from blinky bill

But for echidna we have Sammy from the koala brothers and a few minor ‘one episode’ type characters in blinky bill.

You’d think they’d be more common than that, but no. Even in Australian cartoons I’m struggling.

Who remembers the good ‘ol Blinky Bill? Probably the Aussies for sure! 🐨 Blinky Bill is a quintessential character in the Australians’ collective imagination, since the first book in 1933.

I’m very lucky that, as Canadian, discovered Blinky via the 1992 animated film adaptation. It was a deeply forgotten but fond childhood memories. When the 2020 Australian wildfire occurred, the memory of Blinky Bill came back so I watched all again, and by solidarity, I drew this set of drawings in my art style, along donating to an animal rescue team! ❤️

In my humble opinion, the furry community at large needs to know about Daisy Dingo as much as they do, for example, Krystal, Loona or Rouge.

…for your consideration, this scene from “Blinky and the Film Star” (Blinky Bill season 1, episode 16), where she puts on an accent and gets way too flirty for her own good.

…please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks this. Daisy deserves all the love she can get. 🩷

Is this based on a highly specific experience that most people on the internet wouldn't get? quite possibly.

So, foxes are pretty common in fiction and there are a few hedgehogs around.

But echidnas? you don't see them often.

So for a while Movie Knuckles is disappointed that he can't find any echidna in cartoons and movies.

And then he discovers two Australian cartoons. "Blinky Bill" and "The koala brothers"

Even though both shows star koalas echidna character do appear, and he's so happy.

The Blinky Bill theme song ends up being one of his favorites and he plays the song on loop. (me to bud.)
