Embroidery Challenge - November ‘22
This little book cover was inspired by a friend who asked me to design a panel for her featuring Australian native plants. The Waratah on the front cover was inspired by one embroidered on my sewing group’s banner. I chose red blooms in honour of my sewing group’s 40th (Ruby) anniversary. Each of the plants featured - Waratah, wattle, kangaroo paw, bottlebrush and grevillea - can be found on my property. There is, of course, a bee!

Bottlebrush, a bit past its best
The grass verges of the old Auckland city fringe suburbs are planted with all kinds of flowering trees. They are variously native, Australian (like this one), Asian and European – all they seem to have in common is that they flower conspicuously. There will be several trees of one species, then a switch to another. It’s like a botanic garden strung out along the roadsides, and it makes for great walking at the price of some hayfever.
