Mario’s Lil Sis has 120+ hits and 20+ kudos, so I’d like to give you a bit more lore behind the series or AU it belongs to. These are more random ramblings so I’ll put a READ MORE here.
Yes, Lucia is part of the new and refurbished Mario Magus AU. It’s a series more magic-oriented, kinda like the Owl House in a sense. It has a real world/“Mario” world separation like the movie and old tv shows but it’s easier to go back and forth.
In the AU, Mario and Lucia are real people and have a licensing deal with Nintendo to have “mascots” retelling their stories for younger audiences. It helps me have an excuse to cherry pick what is and isn’t canon when talking about the media; it’s like the “Mario is a stage play” theory but more comfortable for me.
Things like Lucia being brainwashed by Natasha and Dimentio are canon, Mr. L, a lot of M&L and Paper Mario content up to Sticker Star are canon. Things like the Blorbs and baby characters are vastly censored incidents and story beats by Nintendo to make it more “child friendly” or more entertaining.
Lucia has Chaos Heart scars along her chest that basically looks like if you told a drunk guy to give you a heart tattoo. She doesn’t like to talk about it at all, but she’ll be forced to confront it mentally and physically later on…
Bowser Jr is real, but at least 95% of Sunshine isn’t canon because he was just a newborn when it came out. IRL Junior is vastly different than game Junior, and the Koopalings are adopted IRL while they’re just sidekicks in the game.
Bowser is not only ftm, but not as big of a villain as the games make him out to be. It was just like the inciting incident when Mario and Lucia first came to the Mushroom Kingdom, some battles here and there until the events that led to the Superstar Saga game came to be. (Which in universe is right before Bowser has Junior)
Bowser, not only with a new baby but after teaming up with his enemy, brainwashed, amnesia’d and possessed by “Cackletta”, he has a change of heart and actually reaches out to Mario during a breakdown after many sleepless nights dealing with a newborn Junior. I might make a fic out of this but in universe this was where the animosity between Mario and Bowser ended, leading to a peace treaty and later ally-ship between him and Peach’s kingdoms. The whole rivalry initially broke out because their parents basically killed each other in a war during their babyhood and they carried it with them cuz it’s not easy to forget that kind of thing, but they at least know that it was their parents rather than each others faults.
Lucia, Peasley and Daisy are in a poly relationship. What started out as jealous feelings of each other quickly became “oh they’re actually hot tho”. Lucia developed feelings first, because she and pretty much her entire family are to type to fall for people VERY FAST. (And her type is strong men and women) Peasley second because the moment he got knocked out outta his Dragohoho form and woke up in Lucia’s arms? Yeah no he fell for her and later Daisy in a similar fashion. Daisy? What started out as a silent rivalry turned into her actually finding him attractive and then collective panic until the idea of polyamory came up. I call them the Flower Throuple.
Polterpup is named Pesto and he’s the ghost of Lucia’s childhood puppy who died after being hit by a car. Because his death was so sudden he harbors no I’ll will and only just wants to continue the game of fetch that the car so rudely interrupted. Lucia only finds this out much later after she meets him and the obvious happens. She cries and holds him because he waited so long to find her again. Because he’s happiest with her, the idea of “passing on” isn’t a thing because all he wants is to be with her, essentially making him immortal until Lucia’s luck runs out.
There are certain creatures called Mimicks, basically imperfect copies of people made out of pure magic, like the fake Bowsers or Bowser Jr’s Mario disguise. They either have to possess other beings or steal their original’s soul, but rare moments they can be their own thing, but it doesn’t last for long before they need to find a host or another body, lest they want to die.
Okay that’s all I have rn. I’m glad you like my Lucia fic so much, I had no idea it would blow up like it did and it means a lot to me. Expect more fics in the near future; now with AO3 I more motivation and more flexibility. Make sure to check out my other works if you liked my Lucia fic, too!

I think it's about time to actually do a little focus piece on the titular characters of the franchise themselves, no? >:] Finally and officially introducing Mario and Luigi for the Super Mario AU! owo SO! Some lore about the brothers: The two are fraternal twins, born into the adoption system of this world. Since world peace is essentially achieved for the most part, the adoption system is generally worldwide and very well funded, focusing on quality of life for the children in the system and making sure they're placed into qualified, loving homes. A part of this system is The Special Stork Delivery service (or simply known as the SS delivery), which is a program of which people may sign up to when they’d like to have children. The service specifically deals with adoption, so the children aren’t blood related to the parents they’re shipped to, but they are wanted all the same! As such, the brothers are obviously adopted! The couple they were eventually brought to were toads who lived in a small island village, where the bros grew up in a happy community. The two eventually ventured out into the world when they were old enough, specifically around the time Bowser was crowned King of the Koopa Kingdom. This is important because, as a show of good will and as a means to be reintroduced into the world alliance, the Koopa Kingdom and the Mushroom Kingdom collaborated on a huge, elaborate event called the Super Star Saga. It's basically an expanded version of King of the Hill: all participating contestants go through a set amount of "worlds" to battle their way to the final world, where they must do combat with King Bowser himself in order to both win the grand prize and get to meet the ruler of Mushroom Kingdom. Basically the original Super Mario games, but with the clear twist of it all being literally that: a game show. :] Mario and Luigi are the ones who ended up winning the very first event, which is how they ended up meeting both Bowser and Peach at the same time, and ultimately started their friendship this way! owo FUNFACTS: -Mario and Luigi both started out as simple handymen in their village; whatever needed fixin', ya came to them! When they moved closer to the capitol of the kingdom they undertook new careers: Luigi started his own bakery, the Waffle Kingdom Bakery, while Mario went on to become an agent in network with CASO (Convention Alliance Special Operations), which is the organization responsible for keeping the world alliance safe and maintaining the peace. -Mario is selectively mute. It's common for him to say a word or two but generally he communicates through sign language. In this universe, sign language is universally taught in all kingdoms of the world alliance as a mandatory, so just about everyone, at the very least, understands it even if they may have a hard time using it. Luigi, while not mute, doesn't talk very much due to being rather shy, so ironically Mario is the more talkative of the two. owo -Peach, Bowser, Luigi, and Mario are all very good friends! A romance will eventually blossom between Luigi and Bowser, but how that occurs and whatnot is for another day. uwu -The brothers' adoptive parents' names are Salto and Lady! Salto is a humble plumber while Lady is an artist. Neither brother knows who their birth parents are, but it is of little concern to them. -Mario and Luigi were targets of an attempted kidnapping during a stork's delivery mission: the abduction was carried out by the pirate crew Wart and the 8Bits. Their failing to successfully nab Mario sets into motion the basic plot of Melon's Adventure, in which illustrates how Melon met Mario (and eventually Luigi) and began his journey to bring the brothers to their original destination: their new home and family. You can start on that story HERE! ---------- Aaaand that's all for now! I hope ya'll like the art, more to come soon! ^.^

This is not complete (as you can tell from the alt timeline post-Shroobs and also the childhood section), and it’s also probably blurry because the text is in uhhh size 4, but here’s my Mario timeline! It is very Bros centric because that’s the player viewpoint. I’ll try my best to explain what’s going on under the cut, but I’ll add a link to the google drawing (in a reblog) if it turns out super blurry.
The red indicators feature the main timeline events. The baby section is not to any scale because I have no idea how long they would have stayed with the incorrect parents, but anything after the thin line (marks 2 years) is to scale. That’s part of why it’s so cluttered down there.
Essentially, I use a system of 4 years to us is 1 year to them, where each year has a season assigned to it.
The events of Luigi’s Mansion, (present) Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Dream Team, and Odyssey all happened in the spring. Sunshine was a summer event. Superstar Saga, Super Paper Mario, Galaxy (and Galaxy 2. It’s a week-long festival now. It’s my timeline and I get to say that Mario is not a century old), Paper Jam, and LM3 all were in the fall (at least for the Mushroom Kingdom - I can’t say the same for other planets in other galaxies, or for other countries on the same planet), while TTYD happened in the winter.
Past Partners in Time is special because it’s 27 years in the past, around when the Bros were 18 months old, Peach was 11 months old, and Bowser was 3 or 4 years old.
This timeline uses the theory that the book from Paper Jam is an interpretation of real events (the less paper based games, which include PM64, TTYD, and SPM), where the magical nature of the book gave the characters sentience to create their own adventures (the papery ones, which include Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King).

So, @capribornio left a tag comment on this post I made earlier about how silly it is that disbelief in ghosts is so common in the Mushroom Kingdom and xe pointed out that it’s actually very probable that E. Gadd actually works for Woohoo Hooniversity in the Beanbean Kingdom rather than a university in the Mushroom Kingdom.
I’ve been mulling that over, and this theory would actually explain a lot about E. Gadd, even beyond answering the question of who the heck is paying this guy.
Firstly, while the tech level of the Mushroom Kingdom (from here MK) is extremely variable, E. Gadd's lab stands out as being well above almost everything that didn't come from outerspace. While some of this is the result of E. Gadd being a talented inventor who made a good deal of his equipment himself, it's also notable that the Hooniversity seems to be at a similarly much higher tech level than the MK as well.
If the Beanbean Kingdom (BK) has a culture more prone to believing in hard scientific evidence and/or ghosts that would explain how Gadd got any funding at all to study something that to most MK residents is just made up.
As for why he also needed money from that coffee shop, I figure that probably goes towards his inventions that don't have anything to do with ghosts. He might even just do stuff like the time machine and such in his free time.
I do still like the idea of the Toad assistants being grad students or maybe students hired by whatever department E. Gadd works for to help with research during field season. I also like the idea of them being from Little Fungitown in BK. "Isn't this great? We're gonna get paid, we're gonna get to see the homeland our parents keep talking about, we're gonna get to put this on our resume. This is so cool!" *immediately succumbs to MK bs and gets shoved in a painting by ghosts* "Ah, that's why my parents emigrated."
It would explain how E. Gadd somehow didn't know who the ultra-famous Mario was at first despite living in the country where he pulled off most of his greatest feats. If Professor Gadd grew up in the BK, and moved to a pretty sparsely populated (by the living at least) forest to conduct he research while all the living residents considered him a madman that was probably pretty isolating and information about Mario might just have never found it's way to him. Plus, he might not even live there year round, only for field work, before going back to the BK the rest of the year.
Same thing for giving Bowser Jr. that magic paintbrush. Still reckless (as is in character) to give something that dangerous to a little kid to use as a toy, but it's entirely possible he legitimately had no clue who Bowser was and why giving his son an artifact like that could be uniquely bad.
That kind of isolation could also add a little bit of depth to his reaction to suddenly having Luigi around in the Luigi's Mansion games. "A local who doesn't think I'm a crackpot for studying ghosts? I'm going to show him my lab, and insist on him staying for dinner, and infodump to him about my research, and-"
It could explain the strangeness of E. Gadd building Luigi's house really close to his lab but then sometimes having the 2 act like they haven't seen each other in awhile. If that's just his main MK lab for ghost field season, they reasonably could go months without running into each other.
It could even explain why he isn't that interested in the money in the first LM game but does take an interest in the later ones. The MK had a pretty abysmal exchange rate with the BK in Superstar Saga and on top of that it changed really fast. Maybe the MK's economy finally evened out enough to make MK money actually worth something in the BK.
If the diplomatic relations between the two countries leans in such a way that the MK doesn't really want to stir up trouble with the BK, it may have contributed to E. Gadd being able to get away with a lot of stuff that even in the MK is probably illegal. That, and spending most of the time you spend in a country being in remote areas filled primarily with the undead.
This does lead to the inevitable question of whether Gooigi is considered a citizen of the MK, BK, or has dual citizenship. Polterpup being around when he was created implies that he was at his main lab in the MK near Luigi's house at the time, though "birth" location might not be considered for MK or BK citizenship. While E. Gadd created him, he was made using the ectoplasm of a bunch of different ghosts and his shape was provided by Luigi's "biological data" so who knows who Gooigi's legal parent(s) is/are. This is why ethics boards exist you nutty ghostcatcher. I personally like the idea of dual citizenship for the gooey dude.
I’m definitely putting way too much thought into this but at least I’m having fun with it :)

HEADCANON POST #2:
Star Children
SECTION 1: Who And What Are The Star Children?
Star Children are, as the name implies, children of the stars. They are born of the 7 Star Spirits, benevolent celestial gods who reside over the Mushroom World and keep the balance of dreams and wishes intact. Star Children are often born of special wishes or to fulfill a purpose. They are born with an array of powers unique to their personalities or purposes, and these powers can range from control over the elements, to more superhuman abilities like strength, speed or intelligence. These powers are often dormant in the child until awoken by outside stimuli, be it self-discovery or forced awakening. This prevents the children, in their young age, from using the powers before they understand them, as the powers of a Star Child can be incredibly unstable if handled incorrectly.
Seven Star Children were born into the Mushroom Kingdom under guidance of the Star Spirit council. Two were born to royal families as future heirs, whereas others were born to fight or defend their homelands. These seven Star Children were as follows: Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Wario, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi. Bowser and Peach were born to be royals, and the rest were born to be, loosely speaking, ‘soldiers’.
Mario and Luigi were born to quell the sorrows of childless life within their parents, but also to protect the Mushroom Kingdom when they got older. When they were born, the king and queen of the Mushroom Kingdom were nearing old age, and the Star Spirits took note of this fact, as the Mushroom Kingdom had also been rivaling the kingdom of Darkland, Bowser’s domain, for decades. Things were beginning to heat up, with this rivalry becoming more and more apparent, and neither the king nor queen could continue to hold the upper hand for long.
Somewhere along the line, Kamek, a powerful Magikoopa wizard, young prince Bowser’s caretaker and the defacto king of Darkland at the time, found out about Mario and Luigi’s birth, and realized both were very powerful. He knew the babies would grow up to threaten Darkland’s rule, so he sent out a squadron to kidnap the babies and bring them back to Darkland, where he would raise them alongside Bowser and use their immense power to fell the Mushroom Kingdom once and for all.
Needless to say, this plan did not go through. Kamek managed to kidnap Luigi, but lost Mario along the way, who was then found by a tribe of Yoshis that set out to reunite the brothers and return them to their rightful parents, taking down Kamek and his crew in the process.
SECTION 2: How Does A Star Child Function?
Star Children are, to put it bluntly, hybrids. Born from the Star Spirits, they are stars buried within a vessel - this vessel can be human or otherwise. Bowser, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are non-human-hybrid Star Children, and Mario, Luigi, Peach and Wario are human-hybrid Star Children.
The star within a Star Child is considered their core, and the source of all the powers they inherit, whether elemental or superhuman. Within a lifetime, a Star Child may find themselves with one or two unique super abilities, whether they accidentally discovered it themselves or had it awakened by an outside force. These powers can be used for good or bad.
A Star Child is, more often than not, purehearted or full of light, as a result of their Star Spirit halves. However, this may not always be the case - with light, there is darkness, and given the right stimuli, this light can be corrupted. Depending on the stimuli, this can cause a number of outcomes - change of morals and attitude, development of new and dangerous powers, or in the worst outcome, physical deformity. Bowser is an example of this phenomena - born a Star Child, the twisted moral stances of Darkland and the royal family molded him into a bitter, egotistical, revenge-driven individual with an interest in the dark arts.
Physical deformity can happen through two things - forced deformation (brainwashing or possession that changes the physical form of a Star Child), or immense negative emotion. There has only been one case of a star becoming corrupt from intense negative emotion - that is, the Dark Star. The Dark Star used to be a Star Sprite, a celestial being below Star Spirits, but above all other beings. It became a being of hatred and destruction, and wreaked havoc on the Mushroom Kingdom before the birth of the Star Children, and was eventually sealed away deep below the ground by the other Star Sprites, where it would remain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Art by CometMedal.)
When a Star Child is corrupted by raw, negative powers, it can overtake the star within them and cause permanent scarring to their physical form, long after the corruption is reversed. The only way to reverse this scarring is to bring them to the Star Spirits or an otherwise celestially gifted being, where they can use their powers to ‘cure’ the star within, effectively reversing the scarring.
Tumblr media
(Art by CometMedal.)
Besides corruption, the star within a Star Child can be damaged or ‘stolen’. The physical form of a Star Child is upheld and powered by the star within, meaning if the star is taken or damaged in any way, it can wreak havoc on a Star Child’s physical form. Under these circumstances, a Star Child’s physical form may begin to crack and disintegrate. The reason for this, as stated, is that without the star powering the physical form, it begins to die, like a dying star shedding its gaseous layers. When a Star Child’s physical form starts to die, they may begin leaking or giving off dying stardust.
Tumblr media
(Art by CometMedal.)
Little can save a Star Child at this point. Without their star, they become incredibly weak, lethargic, and lose all powers they had as a result of their star. Once their physical form deteriorates, they’re gone for good. However, it is possible to save them if their star is healed by a powerful celestial being, or returned to their body via fusion if it was stolen. When the star is back, the physical form will begin to heal, and all powers will return to them - but this isn’t an instantaneous occurrence. Depending on how long they’ve been without their star, they could take hours to weeks to fully heal again, and they are often left under the surveillance and care of the Star Spirits during this time, to assure nothing goes awry.
As mentioned before, a star can be returned to a Star Child via fusion. What does this mean? Well, when a star is pulled from a Star Child’s body, it doesn’t merely take on the form of a star or glow. No, when a Star Child is born, their vessel half is created separate of their star half, and the star is “forced” into the vessel, where it then adapts to the vessel and becomes a permanent fixture.
As the star is separate from the vessel, when separated, it will try to take on the vessel’s form, but fail, as the vessel is separate from it. Depending on the Star Child’s physical appearance, the form a separated star takes may differ, but one thing is for sure - they will always look like a vaguely vessel-shaped space conglomerate, with a bright star shining from within.
Tumblr media
(Art by CometMedal.)
The position of the star within the formed space mass may change position based on the personality absorbed from the Star Child. The positions are as follows...
Star in the head: Analytical, intelligent, but maybe somewhat full of themselves. Star in the chest: Thinks with the heart, caring, firey, passionate. Star in the abdomen: Between passionate, but also sensitive. Shy, nurturing, but can be a real go-getter when needed. Star in the stomach: Loving, full of concern, sweet and compassionate, a healer.
FINAL SECTION: What Powers Do Star Children Possess?
The powers a Star Child possesses depends on their personality and life experiences. They are born with a myriad of powers from the start, but may only develop two or three of these powers within their lifetimes. Mario, as an example, has the power of Firebrand, as well as immense strength and resilience. These powers were present in him all along, but his strength and resilience developed naturally, whereas his Firebrand was awoken by Firebrand, the aptly named god of fire in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It was then strengthened through battles.
It is possible to awaken more powers in a Star Child through proper training - a fire-using Star Child could be taught to use ice, or a healing Star Child could be taught to use more destructive dark types of magic. It all depends on who is teaching, and how proficient they are with the magic they’re teaching.
When a power is awoken within a Star Child, they undergo side effects of the power ‘breaking free’ from the star and flooding through their forms, so to speak. Mario, in his early days of using Firebrand, began to experience very high and hot fevers that left him exhausted. Using Firebrand for the first time took a lot of energy out of him, and sometimes, he had to strain to form a stable fireball.
A Star Child’s powers are mainly tied to their emotions, and as such, particularly emotional Star Children may experience ‘blips’ in their powers. To use Mario as a fire user as another example, when he is embarrassed or incredibly angry, his power begins to flare, and his body will start to steam or in extreme cases, catch fire. When he is sick and otherwise unable to keep a clear mind, his Firebrand will flare up and cause him to sneeze embers, or his body will warm up to untouchable temperatures, making it impossible to touch him without getting burned.
Fire-using Star Children are unique in which their power also reacts to outside temperatures. When in a hot or otherwise dry environment, a fire-using Star Child may notice their fire powers are stronger and easier to use, due to absorbing the heat around them. When in the cold, if they don’t keep a consistently warm core temperature, their fire abilities may dwindle, or stop working entirely.
The effectiveness of a Star Child’s powers can be improved upon with training - a lightning-using Star Child may be able to jumpstart or work electronic devices with their electric powers, a fire-using Star Child will be able to use fire that is not their own (such as stealing flames off candles, or deriving heat from things from lit stoves), healing Star Children may learn to revive fallen or even dead people, and so on. When taught to use their power properly, Star Children can be immensely powerful.

In the 'recent' mario RPGs (Color Splash and the remakes of Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story) they decided to 'dumb down' Morton's dialogue, MAKING HIM TALK IN ALL CAPITALS AND REFER TO HIMSELF IN THIRD PERSON. What did you think about the change? Of course it is too late to incorporate it into your fic, but do you think Morton could have sat down and studied up on language a bit since those titles?
Short answer: sure, if it helps, Morton was told by his parents to do better and they forced him to go into more schooling, so he built brains.
Long answer, because I’m very opinionated about this topic, is below.
...
See, that has been grating on me for the longest: Morton’s inconsistent character development.
In his introduction back in Super Mario Bros. 3, the manual’s flavor text treated Morton as cautious and perceptive, assessing Mario’s skill and making sure that it was reported. He was strong, but careful.
Next was his appearance in the cartoon, where he was a blabbermouth, so that scrambled around what he might function well as.
This all changed on Morton’s return with the New Super Mario Bros. series, where he’s most definitely bulked up. He’s not just big, he’s definitely powerful with his more recent appearances. Nothing otherwise was suggested at the time.
His appearance in Paper Jam defined the interpretation that I have a stronger preference for: mostly strong, but enough wits about him to handle his opponents, and above all else, caring towards his family. He battles alongside Lemmy and Iggy, and gets furious when the Mario team defeats them. At the time, this interpretation best balanced Morton’s previous established traits and made him what I thought was a fully developed character in his own right, perhaps the most natural progression for his development.
Annnnnnd then Color Splash happened. I guess the writing team was so focused on other aspects that they just considered Morton would be best described as “dumb muscle.” I suppose that’s a viable approach, but given how he had been developed in the last game, and his various personalities previously, they could have picked anything more exciting. But no, he was made into mostly a witless fool.
Now, it could have been considered that Paper Morton was different from regular Morton, in which case this would have been fine. I guess someone on the writing team thought that Color Splash’s interpretations were the correct to follow, however, and no one else questioned that, so his return appearances in the Mario & Luigi remakes had him follow his, uh, Paper personality to a tee.
More personal stuff is below, but you can kind of see my point.
...
With my personal tastes, I can’t deny that I dislike characters being rigid in their development, and I do my best to make sure characters aren’t thrown in a rut with how they’re written. I don’t like them being shallow, especially if I intend on using them repeatedly. Even my lesser characters, I do my best to make sure they have SOME kind of development.
Most especially, I get rather annoyed at worn archetypal character tropes. For too long, I’ve always thought of muscular characters as unintelligent. And that’s predominantly because of how the media portrays them, more often than not. Even when I write characters, it’s rare that a powerhouse character is the smartest in the room. To play advocate, it is fair, since it allows characters with more intelligence focuses to shine, and balances character rosters.
Morton never needed that, however. Roy was also previously considered a strong character, even being known as the “bully” of the Koopaling bunch. There was no need for the dynamic to be thrust upon Morton. The way that Roy developed in later games does keep him as a strong Koopaling, but balances it with a certain “cooler” edge, which I also like for Roy. He’s mostly brawn, but can be surprising with a few lines. That’s a developed character.
The thing about that, though, is that Roy is fairly popular and can hold his own better among the Koopalings. Ludwig and Wendy tend to stand out the best, but Roy’s usually on their heels. Iggy, Lemmy, and Larry can duke it out below them, and who usually ends up on top between those three mostly varies by which fan you approach. Morton, on my assumed average, doesn’t really do well with popularity compared to his counterparts.
This is possibly because Morton has never really had a solid character interpretation prior to what Color Splash decided to establish for him, so people were never positive how to handle him. Now he will have a consistent personality, but it’s not exactly something that will really draw fans in, or at least, I don’t believe it should. If it does, well...simple approaches do work nicely at times, I suppose.
Personally, I’m elated that I had written my fanfic prior to Color Splash and Morton’s massive downgrade. Even I didn’t know how to approach him immediately, and I left him quieter early on, falling back more on his muscle more than his other traits.
But I refused to let that entirely define his character, and I think Paper Jam was really what pushed me into finalizing how I wanted Morton: mostly uses his strength, but arguably has the biggest heart among his siblings, and is entirely devoted to them above all else. THAT is a strong character, and that was his sharpest that he’s ever been. I have zero regrets following that, even as the future installments will continue to absolutely tarnish him repeatedly.
it’s mostly a non-issue to Mario fans on average, because most of them could care absolutely less about Morton as a whole, much less as anything memorable between the Koopalings. I think that’s precisely why I get so defensive of him, though, because he’s not even my favorite Koopaling, but I feel bad that no one really likes him much, and he deserves to be at least balanced out a lot better with his siblings than he ever is.
On average, I worry about him and Larry more than the others, but because Larry is usually the first fought Koopaling, fans remember and attend him better than Morton. So, that’s where I’ve started paying more attention.
Anyway, thank you for the ask! I’ve actually being holding this in for a while and wanted a good place to write such feelings on the least popular Koopaling. I do hope that he either gets another rewrite, or at least manages to gain more fans regardless of how he’s written.

a saga
Me, secretly delighted by the many promising gifs of Teenage Bounty Hunters while having no idea what the show is about except that it’s rated MA: What's the catch.
Wikipedia summary: After banging up their father's truck, high school students and fraternal twins Sterling and Blair Wesley fall into bounty hunting for a grizzled bounty hunter named Bowser Simmons in order to pay for the truck's damages, and without their parents knowing.
Me: Wait they’re TWIN SISTERS??? Heck yeah, this is the content I want to see! ...what's the catch.
Variety: Formerly titled Slutty Teenage Bounty Hunters, the sisters "dive into the world of bail skipping baddies while still navigating the high stakes of teenage love and sex."
Me: and there it is.
Me, still hopefully googling: Is it maybe not as bad as it sounds tho??
Televinita's Personal Guide To Appropriateness Counsel: Although the word teenage is in Teenage Bounty Hunters, it doesn’t mean this Netflix show is appropriate for teens. While witty and humorous at times, Teenage Bounty Hunters is rated TV-MA for language, nudity, and well, everything else you can think of.
Me: consarn it

So a couple of weeks back, @unicornrepublic asked me what my top ten games of 2017 are. When I sat down to write the list it occurred to me that, even though this has been an extremely good year for games... I’ve finished (and liked) approximately jack shit.
It’s weird. I was so hyped for Hey Pikmin!, Persona 5, and Maggie’s Apartment, and I just... never finished any of them. Bloody hell. Also there’s at least one game I haven’t included here despite thoroughly enjoying, because I think we’d all prefer it if that stupid discourse stayed dead and buried.
So! uh, here’s my Personal Top Seven Games of 2017 (That I Have Played Enough Of To Actually Get A Good Feel For), presented in no particular order!
Stories Untold (No Code Games)
A collection of short horror games, ranging from psychological horror text adventures to strange sci-fi puzzles. While the overarching story is nothing to write home about (i.e.; the fourth episode is pretty fuckin’ shit), what’s here is solid and spooky.
I’m also a real sucker for the game design in the first two episodes. It’s always refreshing to see people take cues from seemingly “dead” genres like text adventures!
If you’d like to give it a shot before you buy it, the first episode (The House Abandon) is available for free on the game’s website.
RUMU (Robot House Games)
It’s the not-too-distant future, and you’re a vacuum cleaner. You were designed by eccentric scientist lovebirds Dave and Cecily for two purposes: to feel love, and to clean up their messes when they’re not around. ...Which is pretty often, but hey, at least the house AI Sabrina is there to chat with you.
Rumu is a short game, and a pretty pricey one at that. And while the gameplay isn’t much more creative than your average point-and-click... goddamn. I really loved the story.
It’s never easy seeing good intentions end in disaster.
Night in the Woods (Infinite Fall)
A story-based game with a few light platforming elements. Mae the cat drops out of college for reasons she can’t articulate, and moves back in with her parents in an attempt to get back on her feet. Things slowly begin to go off the rails, however, when she finds a severed arm on her walk home.
I’d been following this project for several years before it came out (roughly around the time of Lost Constellation’s release?), so I was a little nervous to see if the final product would live up to my hype. But, thankfully, it did.
I might not have been raised in small town America or moved out of home for college, but somehow I managed to find something to relate to in nearly every character in the game. Stargazing with Angus and lying on the couch with Bea remain two of my favorite scenes out of anything, ever.
...Honestly, the whole stargazing motif is just so beautifully done. I could ramble about it for ages, but I won’t, because this is getting long enough as-is.
The pacing of the actual ‘plot’ is... pretty weak. Especially if you went into this game expecting heavy thriller or horror elements. But honestly? That doesn’t matter much to me. I just liked hanging out with these characters. And while I haven’t had a chance to check out the Weird Autumn content update, I’d still really recommend this game as-is.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo)
A pretty gorgeous remaster of the original Superstar Saga, with a brand new, side story focusing on one very ordinary Goomba and his pals.
Superstar Saga was one of the very first roleplaying games I ever played as a kid, so this one is totally just a nostalgia pick on my part. The combat system is so goddamn interesting, it’s leaked into a number of my own projects.
Not all of the changes made to the game were for the better (such as the boring equipment screen and the inability to swap Bros. at will), but... goddamn. The animation is gorgeous. The music is gorgeous. And while Bowser’s Minions might be a totally brainless minigame, it is pretty hilarious.
West of Loathing (Asymmetric Games)
You know the saying “I could do this ‘til the cows come home”? Well. The cows have come home to the wild west, from Hell. Someone’s gotta beat them up, and that someone’s you.
Despite the game’s graphics being nothing but black-and-white stick figures, West of Loathing somehow manages to be one of the best open-world sandbox games I have ever played. Seriously. It’s hilarious when it wants to be, serious when it needs to be, provides players with alternate solutions to nearly every problem... And dare I say it, but the NPCs in WoL are really goddamn interesting and I’m attached to each and every one of them.
It’s just a really, really good way to unwind after a long day. Plus, unlike Kingdom of Loathing, I can play this without feeling the burning urge to be 100% efficient all the time.
The Sexy Brutale (Cavalier Games Studios)
All your friends at the Sexy Brutale casino are being violently murdered. That alone would be bad enough, but to make things worse, the day just won’t stop repeating. It’s up to you to do your priestly duties, figure out how to foil each and every murder, and finally end the day.
TSB is far from the perfect game that critics make it out to be, with really basic puzzles and an ending that didn’t really appeal to me. ...But if there’s two things I’m a slut for, it’s murder mysteries and time loops. It’s about goddamn time someone tried mashing the genres together!
Regardless on my opinion of the overall story, there’s so much symbolism and subtle foreshadowing going on, it’s a little hard for me not to be impressed. And the characters themselves are all varied and interesting and I love revisiting them (...even if it is just to watch them nearly die?). Worth checking out if you like jazzy soundtracks, showy casino aesthetics, weird murders, or experimental game mechanics.
Cuphead (Studio MDHR)
WELL CUPHEAD AND HIS PAL MUGMAN AND HIS PAL MUGMAN AND HIS PAL MUGMAN-- ahem
Look, chances are you already know what this game is about, but trust me, the hype is well-deserved.
I adore the set design. I adore the character animation. I adore the soundtrack. ...I do not adore certain RNG moves ([cough] expert cala maria [cough]), or the fact that prolonged play periods are probably a contributing factor in me gettin’ carpel tunnel. But hey! It’s a good game! I’ll live.

Inktober Day 11: Fawful and Cackletta
“Don’t talk to me or my apprentice ever again.”
SO UM?????
NOBODY TOLD ME SUPERSTAR SAGA JUST GOT REDONE and came out this week??? Until my brother gave me a copy of the new game for my birthday yesterday??? I didn’t even know this game was even a thing and I just-
MY CHILD CAN WATCH HIS MOTHER FIGURE DIE IN HIGH QUALITY
Eeeeee! Super excited! So of course I had to draw these two today. They are my absolute faves from the Mario series in general. Lightning-wielding old bat and her tagalong little apprentice who is obsessed with sandwiches and making bizarre food similes, has a super signature speech pattern, and has no talent when it comes to magic and fiddles around with technology instead. I mentioned SelanPike once before on this blog, but I want to talk about her again.
SelanPike’s fanart and fanfics for these two are really what brought them to my attention in the first place seven years ago, and I’ve been all over them ever since. She has some really adorable fanfics for them on her FFN, as well as art and comics on her dA. I totally recommend checking her out.
Selan is the one who introduced me to my absolute favorite trope of “Distant parental figure struggling to raise the absolutely adoring child who believes they can do no wrong”. I think what irreversibly sold me on these two was her one-shot, “Breathe Again”, which is very short and yet totally adorable. Seriously it’s super tiny but I’ve never forgotten it and I think it had a huge influence on young me being fascinated with interesting character dynamics and motivations. It always floated in the back of my mind as I worked on my own Cackletta and Fawful fanwork, and I still think about it often even now that I’ve migrated into the FOP fandom and turned my energy towards the relationship between Sanderson and H.P. instead.
One reason I may have been drawn to Selan is that she, like me, has a fondness for the quirky background characters (Cackletta, Fawful, Doopliss) even though they were never the most popular. And yet... she loved them. She dedicated a lot of energy into crafting beautiful things not for the attention, but because she honestly just loved quirky background characters. She cared deeply about exploring Fawful’s and Cackletta’s relationship, and I think what was so amazing about this to me was that my first introduction to her Cackletta came through her fanfic, “Until Tomorrow”, which is a story about the distraught Fawful struggling to bring her back to life following her death at the end of “Superstar Saga”. Yes she legitimately dies in a Mario game and not only that she dies in the freaking MIDDLE of the game too and Fawful sucks the soul out of her body and desperately throws himself into finding her a new host and she possesses Boswer and then of course you go beat up her soul and she freaking dies again and he spends "Partners In Time” living alone in the castle sewers until he finally comes back as the main villain in “Bower’s Inside Story” and I just-
It just stunned me how obvious it was that Cackletta was Fawful’s entire world and how well Selan portrayed what their relationship was like even though she was dead throughout the fanfic, but you could just see how much he cared by watching how far he would go to drag Kamek into helping him bring her back to life. Yeah, I have mad respect for Selan. And Kamek is another of Selan’s background favorites and it’s very possible some of her take on him crept into my Anti-Cosmo too... She’s got lots of cool stuff and you should really just take check her out. Also her take on Mario is precious. Seriously I love her and it’s such a shame that she left the world of fanfiction behind years ago...
... If someone ever comes along years down the road when I’ve potentially moved on myself and finds themselves adoring my writings about background characters like I’ve adored Selan’s, that would be a nice thing, I think.
Although I haven’t been drawing them proper fanart anymore, Cackletta and Fawful still hold a very dear place in my heart for being a huge reason why I started writing fanfics and sharing my fanart online in the first place, and of course they’re technically the reason why Origin of the Pixies exists and the relationship dynamics within it are the way they are.
I still have tons of unfinished fanfic scraps about these two sitting somewhere in my files... along with a surprising number of doodles of Cackletta and H.P. meeting up to talk about their evil plans, minions, or just bicker at each other like an old married couple. It’s only like five doodles, which I think is a very surprising number and is a problem that should be rectified with more doodles.
“Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions”, here I come!

Why Aquamarine is what got me back into Steven Universe
Ok, so let’s talk Steven Universe.
Tumblr media
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the show at this point. You’re most likely either a fan of it, or one of the people who think the show is grossly overrated. Honestly I only ever see two people in those categories. You either love the show to death or think people should stop talking about it. Me, however, I was always in the middle. I liked the show and it’s humble beginnings, it was a nice show with amazing art direction, wonderful use of colors, a cast of amazing character that are mostly female, and some really interesting plot points...
That’s what I used to think of the show. As time went on I felt like things started to slow down too much. The pace went from steady and interesting to something of a crawl. Characters were starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel for character interaction, things started getting less interesting and dare I bring up the inconsistent character proportions? I didn’t start hating the show, I just thought it was loosing my interest. I still think of the show fondly, even during that slow period but I just kinda stopped. I felt the show lost something of an edge that it had, some real conflict to give way to some good character interactions. Not that the show was bad, I don’t think I can really ever say the show reached a point where I can say it’s poorly made (even baring the Finger Cats in mind).
Than, Aquamarine showed up.
Tumblr media
Oh boy, Aquamarine. Where do I begin? Well, let me just say this for clarification. I stopped watching Steven Universe but I knew very well what was going on in the plot. I knew about Blue Diamond, The Zoo, The thing with the one Ruby, etc. So when I watched the two episodes with Aquamarine I wasn’t clueless and knew enough to continue watching. When I first saw her I thought “Daw, that’s a cute character design. I’m guessing that seeing as she’s asking for her dad, maybe we’ll see our first male gem? Or maybe younger gems see their Kindergartens as parental figures, or they have Male father figure gems in Kindergartens?” And watched these episodes to see what this cutie was going to do.
And than she showed up in I am My Mom and...holy fuck.
Tumblr media
Aquamarine is a cold hearted bitch. She’s such a volatile, destructive, commanding, vindictive little fairy bitch...
And I love it.
This is the sort of conflict I was WAITING for. Sure, there was enough conflict before to keep the story going but I still felt that the show was going too slow for me to want to keep watching. This however, kicked things into high gear and I love it. Aquamarine reminds me a lot of how people saw Peridot back when she first showed up, but honestly, I think Aqua’s introduction to the show FAR surpasses Peridot’s. Not to say I don’t like Peridot (even though I personally think the writers of the show have been making her a bit...less interesting. I prefer the sassy smack talking gremlin we had, so hopefully this conflict will help bring that back)
But with Aquamarine, she was shown to be so cold. Remember when Peridot showed up and she just destroyed one of the orb robots with her foot? That was pretty intimidating. Although Aqua takes it to a whole new level by threatening Jamie with death. This is an important moment in the show because, well, think about it.
With most of the antagonists we’ve had their main mission is the destruction of Earth. Of course, that’s a bad thing. Although this is the first time the steaks are personal. We’re not dealing with a huge, cosmic destruction that will harm millions. This is a personal, hostage situation. Aquamarine is threatening to kill not just Jamie, but everyone she has captured if she doesn’t get her way. And considering the tone of the show before this, that’s a big deal.
Another one of my favorite things is when she says this line:
Tumblr media
“But the Diamonds needed me, that’s the burden of being the best.”
Notice the wording of that sentence. Before this, all the gems working under the Diamonds have talked about them like the Diamonds are gods. People to be worshiped and feared, to the point where those gems felt The Diamonds completed them. This is completely different. Aqua is talking about The Diamonds like they need her. Like if Aqua wasn’t around, The Diamonds wouldn’t know what to do with themselves. Meaning that in a way, Aqua thinks of herself more highly than The Diamonds.
Let that sink in.
Aqua thinks more highly of herself THAN THE DIAMONDS.
That is a big deal to me because it goes to show how far Aqua might go for whatever sick goals she has in store. Something tells me there’s more to Aqua than her allegiance to The Diamonds. Honestly Aqua reminds me a lot of Fawful from the Mario & Luigi series.
Tumblr media
Fawful, from the games he comes from, was an underling to the antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. At first he seems like something of a ratty underling to a higher power, until his resurgence in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story where he becomes one of the strongest antagonists in the Mario Universe, and comes the closest in all of Mario History to destroy everything.
By the way, if you haven’t played the Mario & Luigi series, do yourself a favor and change that. You’re really missing out. There’s some rumors going around that a remake of Superstar Saga is coming soon so if that’s true, than snag that as soon as it comes out.
Back on Aqua though, I really look forward to more of her, and hope she’s truly as diabolical as I hope she is.

Five Nintendo Switch Games I’d Like to See Announced at E3 2017
Tumblr media
As a gamer, E3 has become a second Christmas. It’s an event lasting a few days where I get to see what new games, or updates on previously announced games, my favorite developers are working on. But, Nintendo is always the focal point of my viewership as I look forward to what new sequel, spin-off, or original titles they’ll reveal. This is the Nintendo Switch’s first E3, and with the date quickly approaching, I thought it’d make a list of five Nintendo Switch games (in no particular order) I’d like to see announced at this year’s E3.
Tumblr media
I was first exposed to the fun and frantic gameplay of WarioWare on the GameCube, when WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$! was released in 2004. Since then, I’ve tried every iteration of the microgame madness, from GBA to Wii U, the latter being a more scaled down version of the series. The Joy-Con controllers would be a perfect way to experiment with the series, as they could take advantage of HD Rumble, and with the versatility of the Nintendo Switch, portability would add ease of multiplayer on the go. It would be great to allow up to 8 players to sit around and enjoy the absurdity of the mircrogames. Honestly, I’d choose WarioWare over Mario Party, especially with the way Mario Party is going … Here’s to WarioWare: Switch !
Tumblr media
The year was 2003. The GameCube had been out for two years, and after begging my parents and working hard in the third grade, I convinced the omnipotent beings to buy me the system. When I saw the green wonder staring right at me, terror-stricken, I knew I had to pick up Luigi’s Mansion. The game is hands down, my favorite video game of all time, it has the charm and lovable aspects of a Nintendo game with an eerie atmosphere that no other Nintendo game has made me feel. Of course I would want a sequel! I know, I know, we had one Four years ago called Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and trust me, I was very excited when I found out it was coming, but seeing it was for 3DS broke my spirit. I did play the game and i liked it, however, a full-blown HD console version would be a dream come true. Especially if they go back to exploring one big mansion instead of multiple smaller ones. I’d say keep the multiplayer aspect of the 3DS game (again take advantage of the Joy-Con), but give me a bigger mansion and more creative ghosts to catch, like in the original. C’mon, Nintendo, give me Luigi’s Mansion 3! I would be so happy.
Tumblr media
Mr. Miyamoto, don’t do this to me. I saw that interview a couple years back. You said Pikmin 4 was almost ready, so where is it? I understand game development takes time, but I know the newly announced Hey! Pikmin can’t be the sequel you teased. It just can’t be! Ok, breathe. Relax. All right I’m back. Pikmin has seen three games in its lifetime as a Nintendo IP, with Hey! Pikmin being the fourth. Pikmin 1 and 2 were released on GameCube in 2001 and 2004 respectively (wow another GameCube game) and about a decade later given New Play Control releases on Wii, and Pikmin 3 was released on Wii U in 2013. I believe there’s room for a true sequel on Nintendo Switch. Pikmin 4 could see a return of Olimar and Louie, maybe even the cast of Pikmin 3–Alph, Brittany, and Charlie–can return. I would love to explore new environments and Pikmin species alone or with a friend. Also, there’s no denying these things are downright cute. Please, more Pikmin!
Tumblr media
Masahiro Sakurai. You know him as the creator of Kirby, and the Super Smash Bros. series, but in 2013 his team, Project Sora, released Kid Icarus: Uprising, which served as a reboot for what many thought was a long-forgotten Nintendo IP. The game has some of the funniest and wittiest dialogue in a video game I’ve ever experienced, as well as being the chattiest game Nintendo has to offer. The back and forth playfulness between Pit and Palutena is great, and watching Pit interact with other characters makes for a fun play through. The soundtrack was amazing and offered composition from many video game composers outside Nintendo. Now that development on Super Smash Bros. is far from done, it would be great if Sakurai gathered his team to work on a sequel to this game. I’d be more than glad to take down Hades and his minions once again. I just want to say: I loved Pit’s opening line “Sorry to keep you waiting” it sent chills down my entire body. Sakurai, don’t keep us waiting!
Tumblr media
For my final entry, I’d like to show my desire for a console entry in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. I’m a huge Paper Mario fan. I’m also a huge Super Mario RPG fan, and that was the last Mario role playing game we got that didn’t take place in paper-thin worlds. With a total of five Mario and Luigi titles exclusive to handhelds, a console version would be a step in the right direction, since the last two entries on 3DS Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam were a little stale compared to the DS’s Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story or my personal favorite Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. There has been rumors regarding Ubisoft working on a cross-over between Mario & Luigi and their Rabbids franchise, but I, like all of you, am praying it is not true. Another rumor that has surfaced is a remake of Superstar Saga for 3DS, which I would be more in favor of, but until then, let’s hope we get a massive Mario & Luigi RPG for Switch with Co-op, larger worlds to explore, and new interesting characters that aren’t based in the mushroom kingdom.
So these are five games I’d love to see announced at this year’s E3, and shouldn’t be confused with my predictions. That’s a whole other entry. Here’s hoping Nintendo Switch could keep the momentum it has got going, maybe with one or all of these games being announced. Hey, one can dream. Right?
