BNHA Rewatch: Episode 34 “Gear up for Final Exams”

I always break this one out around Finals week.

Pictured: Deku and Kacchan in 10 years. (Of course episode 34 opens with the Mineta bit).

Kaminari is constantly frying his brain with his own quirk, and Mina is used to just kinda coasting on her quirk and athletic skills, so they’re both last.

An approximation of my initial response to learning that the next arc would be about pairs of students fighting their teachers: YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BAKUDEKU VS ALL MIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG BEST PREMISE EVER (Or so I thought at the time, not to know that it could be topped. That’s MHA, always topping itself). Can I also just say that the design of the Final Exam arc is brilliant. I noticed this a lot in comparing it with the PL Exam later on, but I personally think of it as Hori’s own License to Print Character Development, and I absolutely approve.

This is probably the arc that changed the most from adaptation in manga to anime - and although I adored this arc in the anime the first time I saw it, there are a few changes in it that I think are actually not for the better. That’s to say, they make for more entertaining television, but they also change the characters.

Firstly, changing it so the tests happen one after another, instead of simultaneously like the manga, means that the characters have different amounts of time to strategize ahead of time. This puts a certain light on the big character moments in the arc, particularly Momo, Shoto, Deku and Kacchan. 4 of the top 5 smartest kids in class, and they don’t even try and strategize beforehand? Made sense in the manga where they had no shot, but in the anime, not so much.

Second, also, Uraraka isn’t really the type to do this, she’s too laid back and Type B, so the anime having her strategize with Deku...I guess it’s a way to throw in some ship tease, but other than that it does nothing for her character arc, or any of the other seemingly random characters they throw into the strategy room along with them. Basically, it’s anime filler, so I don’t really care about any of it except Deku’s observations, since those are from the manga (he observes the others after he and Kacchan pass).

For the record: Manga Order: Todoroki and Momo vs Aizawa, intercut with Midoriya and Bakugo vs All Might; Todomomo first, BKDK second. Deku then observes the other teams for a few chapters as they all pass, with Mineta being last.

So Fight #1 in the anime: Kiri and Sato vs Cementoss. There’s this lady on Youtube who did these really great analyses of the first four fights of the FE arc (never got around to doing the rest) so I’ll put links to her (Excellent!) analyses of those four fights. I’ve noticed that Kirishima is often the first one thrown under the bus in school exercises. This, the Joint Training Arc, the training camp...maybe that’s where his insecurity issues stem from. And with a little tease of Tsuyu and Tokoyami vs Ectoplasm, we leave off.

So yeah, another episode I really enjoy. I gotta tell you guys, the Final Exam arc is definitely a favorite of mine. I actually like it even more in the manga than in the anime, for the reasons I’ve outlined above, but it’s still a blast and I was so happy to see it as the next arc. i wasn’t ready for a new villain-based arc yet, and the sheer premise of BKDK Vs All Might is so amazing, I’m hyped as hell just remembering Episode 37. Oh, speaking of...

BKDK CORNER

We focus in on Deku, contemplating his Great Destiny, as Mina and Kaminari talk about how complacent they are in their chances of success. Cue Kacchan, like an embodiment of Deku’s subconscious, telling them off.

I’ll stop the world and melt with you.

This line has a bunch of different translations, all basically meaning ‘I’ll beat you’. The Shippiest is the English Dub, where he says “I’ll show you how much better I am.” Which plays into his Notice Me Senpai hidden attitude towards Deku. I think it’s a mix of both “I want to beat you” and “I want to impress you”. Deku is quiet here. He’s very quiet about his feelings for Kacchan throughout all of Season 2, but he still quietly demonstrates the importance of that dynamic through his actions in the Sports Fest (inspired by Bakugo) and his Full Cowling (also inspired by Bakugo).

Aw they were already standing together.

I’ll talk more on the symbolism of BKDK fighting All Might in Episode 37, but oh man, this is the best. Like, THE BEST. I love this fight. To Sum: They both want to be All Might, each is half of the whole, and they both have to expel that perfect-imperfect image of him they have to make it. Also, I totally think Aizawa and All Might ship it. “I went with relationships” Yup. You sure did, Aizawa.

RANKER: Final Exam Arc Fights

10: MINETA AND SERO VS MIDNIGHT

This one is really dull because Midnight just doesn’t do very much to win the fight. You need the teacher putting up more of an effort!

9. URARAKA AND AOYAMA VS 13

They just...kinda fluked their way into winning.

8. SHOJI AND HAGAKURE VS SNIPE

Poor Snipe, There’s not a lot he can really do in this situation

7. KIRI AND SATO VS CEMENTOSS

Short and quick and to the point.

6. MINA AND KAMINARI VS NEZU

Poor dopes never stood a chance.

5. IIDA AND OJIRO VS POWER LOADER

Short but kinetic and exciting.

4. TSUYU AND TOKOYAMI VS ECTOPLASM

Some good strategy here and Tsuyu did really great.

3. KODA AND JIROU VS PRESENT MIC

Jiro is underrated best girl.

2. TODOROKI AND MOMO VS AIZAWA

A brilliant fight of strategy and character development.

Review: Get On My Level

“Get On My Level” is a 16 chapter BKDK work by Mikacrispy. (Forewarned, there’s an age gap and underage at the very end) It’s the first of a series also called “Get on My Level.” Bakugou Katsuki is a 24-year-old Pro Hero and is forced to take on an intern, due to regulations, in order to not lose his hero license. Enter Midoriya Izuko, 16, a second year UA student. (I like how Mikacrispy split the roster where about half of canon class 1-A are current UA students and the other half are Pros.) Katsuki doesn’t think much of Izuko upon seeing him even knowing his class’ history with the League of Villains.“If Bakugou was a lesser man, he would think the kid was cute as a button and maybe should give up hero work in favor of being a nice trophy husband.“ Katsuki puts him through the ringer testing out his abilities and surreptitiously trying to make Izuko quit as his intern. But Izuko keeps coming back for more. Even tricking his brain into thinking good things about the torture that Katuski subjects to his “slave.” And Katuski actually starts growing fond of him. (His interns and sidekicks usually only last a week before they’re scared off.)

That fondness takes a turn when Katsuki learns that Izuku nicknamed him “Kacchan” in his head to calm his anxiety. I laughed so hard at the chase scene with Katsuki running after poor Izuku. LOL “THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU RUNNING FROM ME, SHITTY NERD?” “BECAUSE YOU ARE RUNNING AFTER ME!”

Izuku slowly develops a crush on his tutor/boss while Katsuki is impressed at his growth and ability to fight back at times. “It’s very cute when the boy gets angry with him and lashes out before realizing what he did, it reminds Bakugou of those little kittens that try attacking you.”

Katsuki figures out Izuku’s crush and decides that the best reaction is to just ignore it. Even though we start seeing some possessive tendencies when he mentally calls him “my Deku.” When Isuku goes missing and is being chased by nomus that possessiveness/worry SPIKES! “All that Bakugou knows is that he took the wheel in a huge Jeep and ran the thing as if the hounds of hell were on his heels.” The imagery of Katsuki behind the wheel of a huge vehicle with the pedal to the floor flying through the streets of Mustafa had me excited comparing it to a movie. Katsuki was out for blood to make sure that Izuku was rescued.

Katsuki eventually decides that he will date Izuku, after a heart-to-heart talk with his best friend Eijiro. Katsuki is not good with FEELINGS! LOL “Katsuki really felt like he was losing his street cred with this whole being in love shit.” He’s very concerned, rightfully so, about the age difference and the fact that Izuku is only 17 but Eijiro tells him as long as he follows his heart and keeps his dick in his pants he should be fine. They start dating, and Katsuki takes Izuku on cute little dates: bento snacks at the end of patrol, to a festival for his birthday, a picnic to celebrate his sports festival win, etc. All is lovey dovey until Mina puts two and two together and goes for his neck! They have a falling out and Katsuki decides that if it’s Izuku or his friends the choice is an easy Izuku. The friendship is preserved after a talk between Mina and Katsuki and it looks like we’re moving towards a happy, fluffy ending but NOPE!

Izuku is presented with an opportunity of a lifetime. A 2-year overseas opportunity that would expose him to training he wouldn’t get anywhere else. He’s not sure what to do about it and fears how Katsuki will react so he hides the news and mulls it over for weeks. Katsuki finds out from Hawks a few days after Valentine’s Day (VDay was a smutty day for them. Izuku is a big flirt LOL) and Katsuki reacts how he always does when he isn’t sure how to process his feelings. He lashes out in anger. He thinks that Izuku was purposefully hiding the information from him to trick him but when he finally sees Izuku he realizes that he was just scared to talk to him about it. Kasuki does what HE thinks is best for Izuku (without asking Izuku’s opinion *sigh*) and tells him that he has to go, what they have between them means nothing and he can’t miss this opportunity. While, yes this opportunity would be great for Izuku and develop his skills in unknown ways that was a decision that he and Izuku should have discussed. In Katsuki thinking that he knew best what Izuku needed he treated him like a child which he had never done before. In not wanting to hold Izuku back from greatness, he completely discounted Izuku’s feelings and essentially broke up with him.

20 days. TWENTY DAYS. Almost 3 weeks and neither one of them had seen each other. Katsuki was so heartbroken that he skipped Izuku’s graduation, settling for watching it on tv. He didn’t even send him the graduation gift that he had specially made. :( He wanted one final night to mope knowing that Izuku would be on a plane the next morning heading to the US. Surprise of surprises, Izuku showed on his doorstep and confronted him. He had every intention of leaving the next day but for that night he wanted his “going away gift.” He wanted to have sex with Katsuki before he left the country. He wanted Katsuki to be his first. They beautifully make love. Katsuki soaks up every movement to his memory. Even watching Izuku as he sleeps. Katsuki has settled in his heart that this will be their only time together. That when Izuku returns to Japan he will be in another relationship, Katsuki just a blip in his past. These poor babies!!!! :( They admit to loving each other and Katsuki throws out a tiny bit of hope that when Izuku returns in 2 years that Katsuki will still be available if he wants to try again. “So when you come back, if you still want this old man then, just ask me out for coffee.”

The final chapter happens three years later. Poor Katsuki had held onto the hope that Izuku would return like he said in two years but he didn’t. His heart broke all over again and his friends tried to help by getting him back into the dating scene. But Katsuki had loved and lost and never wanted to go there again. He threw himself into work and anything that would keep his mind occupied. He needed to focus on his work taking down gangs and saving money for own agency. That was all that was important now nightmares about Izuku be damned. And then it happens. Katsuki’s life is upended as Hero Deku shows up at a morning meeting introduced as a new hero at the agency. Katsuki tries to escape the meeting to get out of Izuku’s proximity and he loses sight of him. “He vanished again. Apparently that is his new quirk, disappearing from Katsuki's life!” He runs to his office to get away, only to find Izuku there who asks the question, “Hi Kacchan, would you like to go out for a coffee?” ALL THE FEELS, RIGHT??!!!

Ohhhhhh what an interesting ask, I’ve been thinking about how to answer since I got it and?? I’m not sure, so let’s put it like this: generally, if the art is obviously meant as platonic I’d prefer it if you didn’t use the ship tag on it, but as a general rule I don’t actually mind people tagging ships anyway? I know how this site works so if I’m really uncomfortable with the idea of it being misinterpreted as romantic I’m just not gonna post anything with those characters in it from the start

That said, sometimes people tagging ships confuses me a lot??? For example the majority of people who’ve reblogged my latest bnha comic have tagged it with the bkdk tag and? There’s nothing romantic about it?? Bakugou is literally off to kill Deku why is that romantic we just don’t know, bkdk shippers seem to have an understanding of romance completely different from mine haha

Ah, also I’ve been having people tagging my bokuro and akaken arts with the ot4 tag, even if I rarely ever draw all of them in the same place. Please don’t do that. Like. Seriously.

As for the general tags, there’s a lot of tags I don’t understand, but from there to saying I’m uncomfortable with them is a bit of a huge step... the one thing that comes to mind is people trigger-tagging Bakugou’s mom. That’s. Hm. I happen to really like that woman and my drawings depict her in a positive light always, so if people could stop that it would be very nice? That’s about it tho~

Ah, I’m sure in the future Bakugou and Izuku will be on civil terms, but here’s the thing anon. Deku was a name with a negative connotation given to Izuku the degrade him - someone Izuku holds dear changed the meaning for him, made it something positive, and Izuku took the name back and made it his own, like a phoenix reborn from its ashes. It was a positive thing because it used to be a negative one, you follow me? It also didn’t have anything to do with Bakugou. Izuku took that name away from him, he didn’t accept Deku as a name to show some sort of positive change in his relationship with Bakugou, it was more about him cutting Bakugou of a source of power he had over him. It was distancing himself from Bakugou, not growing closer

Kacchan doesn’t have anything like that tied to it, it’s just a childish name Izuku has been using since he was four, most probably because everyone used to call Bakugou that - Bakugou doesn’t actually care for the name, or else he would have found a way to make Izuku stop using it. He doesn’t like it, but he doesn’t actively dislike it either, he just does not care, right? So there’s no way him accepting it as the way the whole world knows him as would be some sort of positive change for him, imho

What I meant when I said that I really hope it doesn’t happen is that all it would be for Bakugou is just yet another smack on the growing list of things gone wrong for him - there’s no way Bakugou would willingly accept such a childish name as his hero name just for the hell of it, one thing is growing up and a whole other thing is him making a 180° on his personality like that. So, like, I really don’t want it to happen because I want Bakugou for once to have things go as he wishes, but considering the amount of times the narrative has punished Bakugou and how often his plans have gone on the opposite direction compared to what he was working for, would I be surprised if that choice too were to be taken from him? Absolutely not

As for Todoroki, as I said I have never spent time thinking about his hero name? I kind of assumed he actually wanted to be known as Shouto, but you really never know with him! His character is always going in directions I don’t expect one bit, so his hero name too, if it comes, is probably gonna be something I hadn’t seen coming at all haha

They were on the same team during the cavalry battle! And!! That’s about it!!! Horikoshi has doodled them together now and again in his twitter sketches but as far as canon goes that should be the only significant interaction they’ve had. I don’t mind the ship? They could be cute, but I don’t exactly ship it. Then again I lowkey ship Todoroki with Sero so who am I to talk
