batgirl 2000 reread pt 2!!!
Back 2 batgirl..Cass has to have some of the worst daddy issues in the whole family and that's saying so much like between Bruce and Cain she deserves billions of dollars in compensation for all the all the way fucked up and over shit they put her through that she doesn't even have the capacity to work through yet
also this little interaction made me smile, average bat conversation
obsessed w how they integrate cass into the Bruce wayne: murderer storyline. We're operating fully from cass's perspective here and the whole thing is formatted like any other case she's taken on. we get exposition as cass investigates but there's a feeling of uneasiness as she paces the manor. she fully doesn't know who this guy is but we do. we do.
truly one of the most iconic ways anyones ever figured out his identity. she knows him so deeply that she's able to recognize the pure unbridled determination and fury in his eyes just from a picture
Cassandra cain truly stays unmatched, the "I'll kill you" "not tonight" panel hits just as hard as when I first read it. I need a physical copy of this shit NEOWWW. also cass's ability to recognize that Shiva is just as suicidal as she is, that in fighting each other their both fulfilling the others death wish..like we know she isn't going to kill her from the start but it makes the decision all the more powerful

srsly tho the whole alpha arc thing was sooo good especially when it came to cass's immovable belief that even people with the most diabolical histories are capable of change, are worth saving

THIS^^^^^^ is so, it's such a good way of broadcasting cass's insecurities and emotions to the audience. unlike a lot of characters cass rarely ever says what she's feeling, even when asked she'll often lie. it's either that or a lack of self awareness/means of communication when it comes to her own emotions. BUT this also shows that cass is aware of the complex interpersonal dynamics and drama around her. Usually these things are just implied like when Cass wordlessly punches the shit out of dick for making babs cry, but this is one of the first times in the comic where these things that cass had been feeling and hearing are told instead of shown [which is pretty 50/50 considering the kinda jarring writer switch but I think this specifically was a cool choice]
Cass has a tendency to avoid emotional topics centered around her all together but at the climax of this arc she's forced to confront very conflicting views of her identity, social pressures, and her own insecurities.
this part got to me BAD
Cass's pure and utter devastation in response to Bruce attempting to fire her (I say attempt bcs that shit barely lasted a day) is so gutwrenching. batgirl was the first name she ever had, the first identity as a human being she'd ever had. Not to mention her suicidal-perfectionism. For Batman of all people to say those things to her, not only does she not have anything outside of batgirl (partially BECAUSE of him) but she's literally as close to perfect as it gets, matter a fact bruce literally calls her perfect. To be accused of jeopardizing the mission, despite that she might be the only person who values it just as much as bruce does..No wonder she shatters into a billion pieces when he does that to her. she has nothing else to be if she's not batgirl.

M!ik anime season 3-1
It's so exciting that this season is finally here
The introduction was always funny to me because it was never subtle.
This time the narrator said, "Oh, what lies ahead for Iruma-kun?" meanwhile, the flashes of the demon king's throne passed by. I wonder what that means?
OP is....not so bad tbh. Not the best op of the three for sure. The song is good, if you don't like k or j-pop, it's not for you, but could be more k-pop-ish honestly. The first half is just meh, seems like the animated it w/o listening the song, the second half is more fire! (Tho I wish Kerori's part didn't look so comedy-like, she is the only girl w fighting abilities and her badass familiars are not there). For me the op works, it's not a banger and that is sad.

What is the ciclope-alien girl doing to Azz? that's SA miss, back off. I love how easy and calm Azz looks as he extracts her off his person. Always the gentleman. But still SA. Eiko never changes!

I went thru HELL to get here :D but i did it-! 🎉🎉🎉🎉💕💕💕💕💕💕
Tldr of what happened;
~2/11/21- “I wanna try dl genshin impact, it looks fun and I’m bored”
~1 week after(I struggled), managed to get to rank 16, got to co-op with friend once, it was fun, found out “if you make Mihoyo account you can use redeem codes”-> tried to do that, accidentally deleted(?) account. ‘_’ tbh even now I have no clue what happened...! It wouldn’t let me access my account tho, at all-! Refreshed all my progress back to the start! orz
A week(7 days) after contacting Mihoyo, still no word from them... “Oh no, at this rate I’ll miss the login bonus- free 10 pull!” So I made a new account; 6 days until event ends.
Hhhh grinded my ASS OFF on new account, getting almost no sleep included w... there was several points where I thought “Nope, can’t do it-! It’s impossible”. At one point I even rolled gacha to get a Fire card bc I believed Amber didn’t fit the criteria(SHES SINGLE TARGET!? ISNT SHE!??? Nope! orz)- later learnt otherwise -u-‘ Gacha wasn’t bad tho; I even got Fischl! She’s one of my top fav! 💕 incidentally; Qiqi and Venti are my others☺️💖
I finally reached lvl 23(event required lvl) thought I was safe and could easily do event to get 4*... oh how wrong I was! Event had SO many mini-events and prereqs to clear even after clearing lvl 23’s story(aka the one which on the LAST STAGE of puzzle I was “forced” to gacha)... One of the requests was “kill spiders” <- I’m severely arachnophobic, I CAN NOT go near a spider(even in a game! I did try but... nope) gkakvla luckily my amazing friend @mayumilica <- ((she’s been helping me thru out,, hhh so so grateful💕💕 )) agreed to do it for me and I managed to clear that stage. Another one of the requests involved flying thru goals- I suck at flying, I ALWAYS die/miss the goals GKAKVKAKF I had to repeat it so many times I just... ;;; hhh
I somehow managed to clear, last ~5 quests were pretty easy! Even with circumstances; my phone’s reception is NEVER higher than 3 bars, usually 2. Wifi drops easily, stuff doesn’t load, app lags and crashes ... mostly just today! Yanno.. the last day of event :,D SRSLY ITS BEEN HELL-!!! BUT I SURVIVED!! HELL YEAH!! 💪💪💪💪💪

hello friend!!
good news--it’s easy to make yr own shit to collage with, it’s how i do literally 100% of my work. i don’t use true found images anymore.
other good news--it’s easy to find shit to collage with!! i know for a fact my housemate gets all of her collage materials out of Little Free Libraries, the dumpster behind [REDACTED], and uses a lot of the security linings of junk mail envelopes and her stuff FUCKS. she uses a lot of stick-on letters from the craft store too--we both prefer Headline brand vinyl letters from the drafting section, but she also uses a lot of regular scrapbook sticker letters.
My stuff is generally way more specific/focused, so it’s basically impossible to find images already printed out in the wild unless I wanted to cut up magazines I paid good money for AND I DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT. So. I have a folder on my computer where I hoard zine images when I find cool things in my internet travels--my main “general” collage folder has ??? 4000 images in it ??? And I’ve been hoarding some of them since 2013. And then if I’m doing a project (like for example I just did a Rammstein themed zine) that needs specific images I’m unlikely to use again I’ll make a separate folder and hoard those specific images there (I saved like ~260 for that zine?? I’m thorough ok).
Then! Super easy!! You take the images you want to actually use and throw them in a program that prints--I mass-copy things to MS Word and then convert them to b&w and fix the contrast/brightness in there. You can turn page margins as low as .25″ on most printers which helps you fit more on a sheet. Then you size them on the sheet (like ah yes, I know I’m putting this figure here and it needs to be 3.5″ tall, ish, so I’ll set the size to 3.5″ tall then do a couple copies of it smaller and even smaller so I have options for the perfect fit) and print the sheet on a regular printer.
there u go, u have just created yr own things to collage with. gluesticks are cheap and good, tape is evil, rubber cement is god tier cuz it’s repositionable to a point, permanent when dry, and archivally solid.
if your scissors rub all the skin off your knuckles cuz you hold them bad (me), you can wrap your knuckles in band-aids when you sit down to work and it keeps yr skin on! :)))))))
**if you’re dealing with a ton of images, especially if this is something you’re gonna keep doing, I highly recommend sorting/tagging software. Lightroom is everybody’s obvious answer, but I use a program called FastStone that’s free to download and not as fiddly as Lightroom. We used FastStone at the photo lab I used to work at, I’ve been using it literally since 2010 so you know it fucks. I also have XnViewMP for actual metatagging images into categories so I can get like all the fire pictures or all the cemetery pictures or whatever without having to pick through thousands of images.
***if we want to get real super technical, I use Microsoft Word 2003 for my collage prints because the very next version of Word they changed something in the backend for how it handles images--03 & earlier they would automatically convert to a dot screen when in black & white mode, everything post-03 tries to keep it as a gradient which. Is cool I guess!! But dot screens reproduce better than gradients. If you were wondering why MY shit specifically looks so crispy, it’s because it’s contrast/brightness corrected, converted to b+w, and dot screened before I even cut it apart to glue. Then I micromanage the settings on the copier to get the look exact.
Also, my printer is a HP Laserjet 1150 my dad fished out of a dumpster. Even with as much full-coverage black saturation collages as I do and the amount of excess and reprints it takes to do them, I still only have to replace the toner every 3-5 years. It only does black and I like it that way. You can buy a cheap black and white laser printer for about $100 new, but srsly. Any printer. On an inkjet you might want to switch to “black ink only” mode in the settings so you don’t kill yr cartridges.

I do still hope that RotT gives us even more Mede characters or fleshes out the other ambassadors - Akretenesh and Melheret (though we we just see them through the eyes of people like Sophos who vehemently oppose them) still seem less unique/complex/human compared to other antagonist-types like Ambiades, Sejanus, reader’s choice of baron.)

badassfully, Blasto 6 is the best movie ever made accept no substitutes
tonight’s big headline is I GOT REFUND GUY HIS REFUND. I mean also EDI uploaded herself into Dr. Eva’s skellington to give herself a robot body (called it!) but honestly that pales in comparison to GIVING THIS MAN THE FIFTEEN CREDITS HE SO RICHLY DESERVES. IT’S BEEN THREE YEARS. CONGRATS DUDE JUST HAPPY TO HELP. in general I really like this little quick-resolve-conflict mechanic that’s set up for these Citadel arguments-- though it did mean Shepard was way nicer to those folks still arguing about little Jake than I would have been. I’m less a fan of the fact that I’m picking up most of my side quests via eavesdropping instead of conversing with people-- it makes me feel creepy. (I also like that when I go to talk to people on the Normandy I often walk in to interrupt little chats they’ve been having with other crew members! it makes everything feel much more well-rounded and lived-in.)
anyway. I’m mortified and delighted by every turn in the EDI/Jeff situation, though I am also like please let Tricia Helfer play any other note in the world, free her. I can’t believe Liara was like “:) go talk to Barla Von :)” just so HE could give be info ~from Shadow Broker instead of her telling me herself. like I get that she probably needs to give her agents homework so they can feel needed and useful or w/e but like I WAS RIGHT THERE LIARA COME ON.
love that the sad Battlestar Galactica wall of dead folks in the refugee ward is the exact same pictures from Allers’ murder board on the Normandy what are you hiding Allers did you kill these people
‘twas lovely to do one last mission with Kasumi, who is of course exactly the kind of criminal to also be pen pals with the Spectre hunting her. I will so miss her sarcastic little asides. but also I can’t believe Bau bought my OH NO SHE’S DEAD routine because like. she disappeared? what did he think, she became one with the force? it was also lovely to see Thane again, and it was very sweet of him to offer to protect Kaidan from any random assassins who might show up. it was a little rich for Kaidan to be like “okay but srsly Shepard, we good?” when HE WAS THE ONE WHO MADE IT WEIRD IN THE FIRST PLACE, and his suggestion that we just bury Horizon and pretend it never happened is uhhhh not great but I’m glad he’s feeling better. though I’m a little miffed he emailed specifically asking for my advice on the Spectre offer and then never asked me about it.
(speaking of emails: when Aria was like ‘hi I’m on Purgatory’ I was literally zero percent surprised that she would be arrested and then somehow email me from prison, but NO, Purgatory’s a Citadel club now. and like. there are already multiple Citadel clubs established, AND already a Purgatory! WHY DO THIS?)
also, finally: Allers told her her outfit was literally selected by a focus group for maximum attractiveness and EVERYONE IN THAT GROUP SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY IF NOT SOONER.

Yeah I'm aware, stop judging X___X
I feel the need to point this out. Apparently it's common practice for the Praetor to just, kill off their more troublesome charges. Interesting. But Jordan has a different work ethic which is a) apparently not usual for praetors and b) something at least Nick attributes to his past and not, idk, common decency. Just how savage is the Praetor exactly?? (Also let me add this to the list of things why 3x15 makes no sense at all.)
Okay, so they found another mundane dead by Heidi's hand...... why exactly don't they call the Shadowhunters? Aren't they obliged to? I mean?
True, but it sure as hell is her responsibility how she handles them. But we established already that she has a serious perception problem and always sees herself as the victim.
I mean, prime example, if she could have made that smooth exit through the vent where the werewolves couldn't follow, why didn't she just do that from the start instead of attacking Nick? Because she wants to cause trouble and not just “live her life in peace” as she's pretending to.
More like, he didn't have the guts to face Alec like that. Also does that mean he draped Izzy on the couch like that in that cliché sleeping pose with one hand under the head? At least he took off her boots like a sane person.

(Sidenote though: No wonder he got frustrated with the pretentious Shadowhunter Technology, I mean, look at it. There are only runes. Runes may be called runes, but they don't actually make up an alphabet. Why the heck is there a flexibility rune on the screen? It makes no sense.)
This whole scene (and Izzy's lipstick lol) is absolutely perfect. I love everything about it, especially Magnus and especially Izzy. I'd be really surprised if Magnus didn't find a way to get her that weird root thingy anyway, because he surely doesn't buy the “feeling a lot better now” line.
(Edit: Now thinking about it I realized two things, a) she probably didn't take him up on his offer to go to another warlock because she felt like that was unnecessarily rubbing in that he can't do it himself anymore* and b) with that line she probably meant she feels lighter already for sharing what happened and just <3<3<3<3<3)
*The only think that would have made this scene more perfect is if Izzy hadn't skimmed over his magic comment without acknowledging it in any way. Though with this thought in mind, that she rejected his offer to spare his feelings, I find myself placated.
Also I love how Magnus pretends he's going to look for pen and paper when really he's running straight to Alec to tell him all about this (and to prevent a repetition of 2x09 form happening.... and now I made myself sad again).

I mean, I have sympathy for her. But like, she's too smart for me to buy that she genuinely can't see any other course of action. She just does this because it's the least effort for her, not because she's truly clueless what alternatives are there for here (aka not running around, killing mundanes, starting a fight with everyone). She just thrives on chaos.
Also “Wolves don't just attack without cause. Not in New York” ? Seems like all Institute except the NY one do a shit job since supposedly keeping peace between the Downworld factions is part of their responsibility. Yes, I am still salty about 3x15.
(Also, if anyone's confused by this weird foreshadowing, I wrote notes for this reaction post while watching 3x13 when it first aired, but only got to finish it now after 3x19 aired and I can't keep my chronology-screwing bitterness to myself while finishing up the post. But mostly these are my thoughts from then.)
Yeah something tells me she's not gonna be totally uninvolved in that.
This and the fact that Russel wants to stop Bat from even leaving the Jade Wolf are the final proofs that all the werewolves actually live at the Jade Wolf and pile up in a giant snuggle pile in the kitchen at night. This is further cemented by the fact that Luke and Maia claim to have flats of their own but we never actually see them. Clearly they're both dirty liars that just wanted to mislead.

......didn't she just break up with him because pack reasons? Where is that not a Shadow World Reason? Please explain. (Also choosing an unflattering screen cap of Simon because he annoys me? Absolutely. I am petty like that.)
The easy way Simon accepts their break up really makes me wonder. If Maia hadn't said anything, would he have broken up with her? Since apparently things “changed” and they could “both” “feel” it. Honestly. He literally calls her his girlfriend at the start of the scene as if to draw attention to how ridiculous this is.
You know what, I don't even have the energy to rage about this. Their relationship was so great, they were so supportive of each other, they had great chemistry, great communication, they always stood by each other.
And just because Sizzy has to be endgame there were suddenly weird-ass tension between them for no real reason – none that 3A Saia wouldn't have worked through like pros anyway – just so this break up wouldn't come out of absolutely nowhere. It's shit treatment of both their characters and their relationship and I'm just so exasperated with it all. (Also not the way to endear me to Sizzy. But at this point I feel like a broken record.)
Discount? It was free. Which I'm still finding super hard to believe by the way, that a werewolf establishment would just give out free food to vampires who don't even work there. But what do I know, right, I mean it's not like they just mentioned a few minutes ago how werewolves and vampires hate each other? Right?? Hahaha.
Wow. This actually takes the time to highlight that this break up wasn't as amicable as Simon thought. Maybe he thought that they were breaking up for human reasons, but Maia clearly feels she threw her relationship away for the pack and it's hard for her. And Simon's tirade wasn't really encouraging her to let him know that. I really appreciate that detail.
Other things I want to say:
1) I didn't like that Maia just flat out broke up with him. She should have informed him that she was going to step up for the pack and would have to prioritize that over their relationship and then leave it up to him if he wants to put up with that or not. By breaking up she made the choice for him. Her course of action is ic, I'm not critizising that, but from like, a personal stand point I don't like it.
2) Foreshadowing: Since her whole pack gets slaughtered, if that would have been the only reason to break up with Simon she coulda just gotten back together with him lol. Haha sorry I'm trash. I know.
Wow he's really dumb. He knows Heidi's brand of crazy and still he doesn't realize this was a trap. He said himself that Heidi must have done something for the Preator to be after her, and when the Praetor tells him she's been leaving copses left and right he...... takes this as his cue to ally himself with Heidi??? Wtf?????? Does he not believe what Jordan said? Again, he suspected something like that himself and since the Praetor are playing at being the Downworlder Police they wouldn't just make something like that up with no proof. The heck. I don't get you, Boss Vampire Guy.
Also, thumbs down for the Praetor, if they'd just told them their source was Heidi herself (on the phone) this could have been prevented. But, ugh. With how things are I can at least kinda buy that no working communication between vampire clan and Praetor exists.
Still, if the Praetor wants to be accepted as some kind of Shadow World Institution they should really work on their manners.

To be honest I find it hard to believe that Maia acts like this. Scared out of her mind, yeah sure. But she acts helpless, and she's never been that. When she got that pipe thing I thought she'd use it as a stake. Using it to block the door is smart, too, but why didn't she get another to have a stake? Her whole posture, uselessly hangig over Jordan screams damsel in distress and I don't like it at all.
Edit: I had certain fears how this plotline would be developed in 3x14 which thankfully didn't come true, but my conflicted opinion on this ending scene remains.
Anyway let’s take a moment and appreciate Maia’s Killer Boots.

“We can’t change the future,” he reminded her. “We couldn’t then and we can’t now. But they did get one thing wrong.”
The real story of how and why Daisy Johnson broke apart the Earth.

Destroyer of Worlds
In the end, Daisy thought, she should have seen it coming.
She’d felt it for a while, somewhere deep inside herself.
The knowledge that she would bury her friends.

For a while they managed to stick together as the world collapsed into chaos around them. They clung to each other, looked after each other so well it almost felt like they were the last real people left on Earth. But of course, there was only so much that seven people could do against an alien dictatorship and soon enough, things started to spiral beyond their control.
Coulson was the first to go, in a fiery, guns-blazing, one-against-the-world sacrifice to buy time while Daisy and Elena escaped, and rescued a mob of Inhumans from the Kree cells.
A little while after that, Jemma’s mysterious immunity to one of the Kree’s favourite pathogens attracted the wrong sort of attention from their leaders. She was captured and – after flatly refusing to cooperate, whether willingly or under duress - experimented on, before finally being released. Delirious with her newly regained freedom, she had sprinted full-tilt for that shadowy corner of the world that the team now called home, until she’d realised - and stumbled and fallen and ploughed into the dirt with the shock of it – that the only reason they would have let her go was because they’d won. She’d contracted something. Something dangerous. Something that could wipe out the resistance.
So she’d run the opposite direction instead, and died alone.
May lasted a little longer than that. She was getting old by the time she went. Her eyes clouded with cataracts and she walked with a permanent limp, her legs and knees having been destroyed and re-knitted so many times. She remained a key strategist in their little band of resistance until the end, and died in as much peace as anyone could afford these days, surrounded by most of the remaining people that loved her.
It was funny, Daisy mused, the way that people used ‘funny’ for things that were not funny at all – like how she was sure that May would have preferred Coulson’s end, and he hers.
Still, the rest of them soldiered on.

And then there was Fitz.
His was a slow death, and one of the hardest as the dwindling resistance lost perhaps its truest believer. It started with a painful arthritis - in his hands at first, which was cruel enough, and then it spread to his shoulders, his back, his knees. Still, he refused to stop working; building panel after panel, machine after machine, engines and life support systems and generators and UV light-towers for growing food, and all manner of things that Daisy and even Mack did not fully recognise or understand. As per the policy they’d developed in case of capture, nobody had a clear idea of what all this was supposed to mean, not even the people working on it, until the day Fitz died.
That day, Daisy was curled up in a chair by his bedside as he slept, trying to resist the urge to chew on the sleeve of her jacket. She had asked not to be disturbed, feeling much less the hardy resistance leader their followers knew, and much more the lost girl about to watch one of her best friends disappear before her very eyes.
Fitz mumbled something, incoherent, and Daisy threw herself forward, falling to her knees at his bedside. He smiled – amused, apparently, by her dramatics, as if he wouldn’t have done exactly the same thing.
“It’s okay,” he assured her. “’s just what happens when you breathe in metal dust all day, ‘n don’t eat anything, and-“
He cut himself off, his words lost in a barrage of coughing, and Daisy poured him a glass of water. She couldn’t tell if her hands were shaking or if it was the water in the glass itself, but she got it to him eventually and the coughing calmed. She helped rearrange his pillow so that he could sit up, but Fitz batted her away, too tired for the effort. Almost too tired to keep his eyes open. His whole body ached, even as he smiled ruefully over at Daisy.
“Not long now,” he said, his voice croaking with an age he hadn’t lived yet.
She clutched his hand fiercely. “Mack – just wait for Mack. He’s coming in from scouting. He’ll be here soon.”
“That’ll be nice.”
His body shook – once, violently - as if it was about to launch into another coughing fit, but was too tired to manage it. The end was coming faster than he thought it would, and though it hurt to push her away, he had to claw past Daisy to pull open a nearby drawer. He pushed a notebook into her hands. Frowning in confusion, she pulled out more papers from the drawer. On one of them was an illustration of a massive space station. Daisy’s jaw slackened.
“This is what you’ve been building?”
“The Lighthouse,” Fitz confirmed. “That’s what it was called, right?”
“Yeah. The one in – the one in space, after I…” Daisy frowned, piecing things together slowly. “Wait. You don’t think –“
“It’s big enough for several thousand people. Mack’s been helping me make shuttles, too. We’ve been sending bits and pieces into space. It’s nearly ready.”
“Ready? For what? I don’t understand.”
“Yes, you do,” Fitz pointed out. He reached out again and Daisy gave him her hand. His squeeze was not as strong as it once had been, and his skin felt papery and odd, but it was still his hand. It still felt warm. With horror, she thought about how this might be the last time she’d ever feel that warmth. But Fitz needed to tell her something, so Daisy looked into his eyes, and saw in them why he had been such a believer. The wonder and the inevitability of the universe.
“We can’t change the future,” he reminded her, his voice soft but steady, and full of conviction. “We couldn’t then and we can’t now. We bought ourselves a little time, with a lot of lives, and here we are. But they did get one thing wrong.”
He smiled.
“You’re Daisy Johnson, and you’re going to save us all.”

Those words echoed in Daisy’s mind for hours. Days. They were a lot to live up to – as were the eyes of the gathering crowd, who had fled here from, as far as Daisy could tell, all over the world. Some of them still managed to have such hope that it almost broke her heart at the same time as filling it. Most of them, though, looked to her: the last hope, for humanity and Inhumanity alike.
“Don’t let me fail them,” she whispered. She was not sure to whom. Mack, standing a few feet away, directing refugees about their final missions on Earth? The ghost of Fitz or Jemma or Coulson or May, who she longed to guide her through this? Maybe herself. That’s all she had left, really.
Not long now.
The ground seemed to beat beneath her, as if it could feel the anticipation thrumming through her veins. The crowd buzzed, scared and hopeful, curious and heartbroken. The prospect of spending the next few days in tiny shuttles in the unknown vacuum of space was not an inviting one, but it was better than the alternative: the Kree were turning more and more Inhumans – there were even rumours of mind and blood control – and those pockets of resistance that had made it this far were being snuffed out one by one. As far as Daisy had managed to discover – and as Fitz had probably already known – this was the last one.
Before her sat the last shuttle of the 10-stage interstellar evacuation mission to save humanity.
The SS Hope, Fitz had called it.
That’s why they’d decided to launch it last: in case it pulled a Challenger and blasted itself out of the sky. Nothing killed a revolution like Hope literally going down in flames.
Fortunately - as could always be expected of Fitz and Mack’s work – the other shuttles had all taken off harmlessly and were well on their way up to the Lighthouse. The last of the remaining civilians were walking up the gangplank of the Hope when Elena appeared at Daisy’s side.
Daisy clenched her fist.
“They’re here,” Elena reported.
She’d seen this coming too. Felt it, in the vibrations on the ground: armies, marching. This being their last chance – life or death - they’d be coming after the dregs of the resistance with everything they had.
“We’re ready,” Mack announced, marching down from the gangplank with a determined expression. “Everyone’s strapped in, ready to go.”
“Yeah, but we’ve got company,” Daisy informed him grimly. He frowned, at her, then at Elena, who he knew had been out scouting before. The shotgun axe came down from his back, and he cocked it.
“Where?”
Elena nodded her head in the direction they would have to go, and Mack nodded with determination. To Daisy, he said –
“Get that bird off the ground,”
- and with that he was gone, following Elena to face the firing lines. Two of them against an army would never last long, but for them this had always been where it was going to end. Humanity’s last line of defence. Death so that others may live. Not the worst way to go, all things considered.
Which brings us back to Daisy.
It was with a heaviness in her heart that she signalled for the last pilot to take off. She received his solemn final salute with a stiff upper lip and turned her attention to the task ahead. It was all up to her now and these precious, last few seconds were where she would make her final stand. They were oh-so-close now, and she knew what she had to do.
Daisy lifted her head, proud, feeling the heat on her face and the rush of the air from the engines of the last shuttle lifting off. She reached out after it, feeling its vibrations in the air; feeling her blood sing with the frequency that would get humanity to freedom. A smile touched her lips as she farewelled the ship – after all, maybe she couldn’t literally change the future, but who would have thought that one day she, a scrappy orphan raised in a van, would become this?
Kneeling slowly, Daisy put her outstretched hand on the precious earth. She dug her fingers into its surface and reached down into it with her mind, feeling the frequencies of rock and magma and shifting plates. She reached further than she ever had before, pushing through the nosebleed and the headache, downward and outward until she could hear the running river; the grass crushed underfoot; the kickback of pistols and the falling of bodies in battle not far away. She felt – with a violence she had not expected; so powerful it was as if she could see it – Mack’s body crash to the ground as the immense odds finally overwhelmed him. She was hardly aware of her own self, her own heart breaking, the tears on her own face, with her consciousness spread so wide across the world, but she knew it hurt. And when she felt the hummingbird heartbeat that was Elena die it was if strings were being cut inside her.
Maybe they were.
The last strings holding Daisy to this world were gone. Overwhelmed with the pain and Elena’s scream when Mack was cut down and the dissonant screaming of the earth she screamed too and the world shifted. Rocks cracked and split, magma trembled and fissures broke open – not just at her feet but all across the country. Kree ships were blasted out of the sky. Cracks opened in the earth that swallowed trees and buildings. Her body hummed with all the frequencies of a dying world and Daisy watched herself be lifted into the air, pulling all the threads together into a reluctant, tumultuous harmony. She hit a note, somewhere in there, and all of a sudden it didn’t hurt. It felt like diving into a pool of water; slow and smooth, and she could watch the world collapse around her in slow motion, untouched.
Drifting above the apocalypse, Daisy remembered that once the Asgardian, Sif, had claimed she would be transformed into a Kree weapon; a drone, marching at their beck and call – or worse, a believer in their empire. The Kree themselves had been pretty excited about that too. And Deke, and the others on the Lighthouse fifty-odd years from now, had believed it too, or some version of it anyway. That she’d destroyed their world. Only she knew… she, and the ones who had come before her… that it was not so simple.
She was Quake. Destroyer of Worlds.
Yet, even as the tectonic plates of the Earth cracked and burst by her will, like a glass still in the motion of breaking, she had crushed that name into the dust. There was hardly anything left to destroy. Only enough for one hell of a scorched-earth campaign as the Hope escaped the atmosphere, sailing humanity onto their next sanctuary – and their next challenge.
Those few Kree who had somehow managed to cross the burning, exploding Earth approached Daisy. They looked small, and greedy, and far too confident for the likes of her. Could they not see what she had become?
She was Daisy Johnson. Saviour of Humanity.
And like an opera singer breaking a glass, she waited until the perfect moment to let go the note she’d been holding onto. The harmony shattered, and all the discord of this dying world unleashed at once. It ripped through her fragile human-esque body, and through the Kree, and through the Earth, and the whole planet finally splintered around them.
Daisy died with a bloody, victorious smile upon her face.
