RE: MASH: I keep hearing about The Hauntolgy and the Time Loop Theory, and I wanna torture myself a little by reading more but I can’t seem to find any tags or anything on the blogs I’m following, and we all know search is broken.
Any ideas? I know these are pretty popular AUs/concepts.
oooo yea these are both pretty big within the fandom here. ill be the first to admit I havent looked at a ton of the time loop theory stuff, but I do think its a fascinating concept. my personal favourites are the ones that involve Henry being the one who's conscious of the time loop, or the ones with it being Radar
Henry's is really just a beautiful and painful tragedy with the idea of him trying to escape his death but he cant. the idea of him trying to go home so many different ways but it always ends the same, and when he wakes up right back where he started. @thebreakfastgenie has a post about it thats great, I know ive reblogged it at least once so ill see if I cant find it quick and reblog it for ya anon
in terms of Radar's I dont remember any specific post but I think its an interesting take on his more clairvoyant-like moments. being able to predict what people are saying, apparently being able to read minds to some extent, etc. its a fun gag in the show, but putting him in a time loop setting and having it be that he seems to have clairvoyant abilities because he's already done all of this before... its a fun take and also it hurts <3 im not sure what id have Radar's time loop be centred around, what he would be trying to escape or change, but its definitely interesting to think about
then there's the haunting which I have looked at quite a bit more and have talked about here a couple times, though thats usually in tags. there's a lot I could say about hauntings and MASH because the show itself is just... haunted. everybody's haunted by something, the entire narrative is haunted. the ghosts of the deceased, ghosts of the loved ones they left behind, ghosts of the ones who left, ghosts of their failures, etc. my personal favourite way to look at it is through how each character's loved ones back home float around them, influence them, haunt them in their waking moments and in their dreams. theyre not dead, but theyre not there. they exist only in pictures and letters, maybe the very rare phone call just so you can remember the sound of their voice
I remember there was a post listing the best haunted episodes of MASH with like, explanations as to why each episode was haunted and by what. I dont remember who OP was unfortunately- it might have been @variousqueerthings but I could be mistaken. I think Follies of the Living is my favourite episode for this, the episode's take on ghosts is fantastic, and that last shot just really stuck with me. its one of my favourite episodes in general tbh, this desperation and then this quiet sadness of a ghost hanging around camp, watching but unseen, listening but unheard. makes me wonder how many other ghosts sometimes hang around

AWESOME SHIT IVE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY HAVE A PEEP ! ! ! !! !
LONG POST COMING UP UH OH
too lazy to make that 2023 retrospective just yet so instead i'll talk about some of the albums i heard for the first time recently
MEET THE RESIDENTS
(by The Residents)
youtube
got sent this album by a moot and it's honestly one of the most fucking interesting things i've ever heard, it has this kind of silly but nicely off putting sound with the first half being this mish mash of some really odd (and enjoyable) songs that all kinda join up together with some really nice transitions and the second one having longer more ""conventional"" (for this album at least) separate songs, my favorite of which being the one i linked
some seriously good shit i'd recommend anyone reading to give it a listen even if it's not your cup of tea (it definitely is mine)
discovering this kinda stuff is one of the reasons i use tumblr in the first place
CHILDREN OF GOD
(By SWANS)
youtube
on the replies to one of my previous posts i was told this was one of SWANS' peaks and i can't say i disagree, this album is so FUCKING good every single song on it is brimming with atmosphere and there are so many highlights it's hard to choose just one, considering this album came right after Holy Money (the next album on this list, since i listened to both) it's insane how different this album sounds to their earlier stuff, but it's seriously great. haunting album and extensively memorable, definitely one of my favorite SWANS albums.
on the other side of the coin though...
HOLY MONEY
(By SWANS)
youtube
...was probably my least favorite SWANS record! (or maybe Cop)
Mind you, Greed is actually one of my favorites, and i love the way it sounds and how fucking brutal some of the songs on it are, but there's something about Holy Money that really just didn't catch me as much, and i felt the new versions of Greed songs (Fool and Money is Flesh) just really weren't that interesting, and Fool especially kind of diminished the spaciousness i loved so much about the original version.
It's still a very good album (it's SWANS, come on) but it definitely felt like a bit of an afterthought, like leftovers from the previous album that should have just been in it. The live versions of these songs go hard as fuck though listen to PUBLIC CASTRATION IS A GOOD IDEA (yeah) if you want to hear them in their fullest potential. brutal stuff.
and finally..
1000 HURTS
(By Shellac)
youtube
I fucking love Shellac's debut (At ACTION PARK), but never explored much of their work aside from it until i saw this album in a moot's top albums list, and got to thinking damn maybe i should listen to more of their stuff, and boy am i glad i did.
It was very very weird hearing Steve Albini sing after being used to Big Black and the first Shellac album, but i think he did a really solid job and i found myself enjoying his vocals a lot throughout the album
the songs were all really mean and noisy and immaculately produced like any proper Steve Albini project (them god damn drums!!!) and i've been compelled to give it a listen every time i scroll past it on my files. good shit. give it a listen

Nothing To Wear
Tumblr media
Pairings: Sam Winchester X Reader (she/her), side destiel (blink and you'll miss it)
Requested by: anon
Warnings: panic attacks, body image issues, allusions to an eating disorder, hurt/comfort
Word Count: 1,243
Summary: Sam noticed some oddities in Y/N's behaviour. As the good boyfriend he was, he helped her with her problems
A/N: one day I will learn how to write interesting summaries. Today is not that day
Tumblr media
Something was off. Sam knew that much.
Y/N wasn't as smiley as she usually was, even Dean's meltdown about Dr Sexy being cancelled ("Why would they do such thing? Sam, please tell me that you didn't piss off Gabriel again." "I guarantee you, I did not." "Then why did they stop Dr Sexy??") didn't get her to laugh. And Cas had been on the ground at that point.
So Sam kept an eye on her.
What he found worried him. Y/N was constantly tugging at her shirt as if it was sticking to her skin though it was one of his and consequently at least three sizes bigger than necessary. Usually, she would sit across from him at the library, curled up in a chair while they were doing research but today Y/N kept moving around.
It was as if she wasn't feeling comfortable in her own skin. Sam suspected briefly that she was getting sick.
Another clue showed itself when Dean gathered them for a rare self made lunch. It was a damn good lunch too.
Salad for the healthy ones among them, a steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli as main course and pudding for dessert. If Sam didn't know better, he would think that Dean was up to something. Truth was, his brother was just happy. And that a certain angel was suddenly even more up in his personal space and smiling all the time surely had absolutely nothing to do with it.
But as happy as Sam was for Dean, Y/N was his bigger concern. While she was taking part in the conversation, her plate never seemed to empty.
"His giant feet apparently make it hard to walk," Dean was currently telling the story of how Sam had slipped on a perfectly normal slippery piece of sidewalk and nearly dragged their suspect down with him. Under tears of laughter.
Y/N was chuckling along with Cas and Dean but she merely pushed the food around. Now that Sam was paying attention to it, he wasn't sure if she had taken a single bite so far.
Yeah, something was off. But starting that conversation now would not help. So instead, Sam put on his best grumpy face and defended himself. "The ground was frozen! I don't know how you didn't fall."
"It's called balance," Cas supplied helpfully. His expression was a tad too innocent to be convincing though.
But Y/N was smiling. And a forkful of mashed potatoes found its way into her mouth so Sam was far from complaining.
Later that day, they were getting ready for a night out. Though they were doing it under the pretence of collecting info about a potential haunting, Sam was pretty sure that his brother had just instigated a double date. Not that he was ever going to admit that.
Tumblr media
What Sam did not expect when he walked into their room, was to find his girlfriend surrounded by clothes on the ground, shaking and tears streaming down her face.
"Y/N?" Sam crouched down next to her, hand outstretched.
She kept crying, her sobs becoming more shallow with each hurried breath she took. It seemed like she wasn't getting enough air into her lungs.
That was when Sam realised what was going on. "Y/N, listen to me. Focus on my voice, Baby. You're fine, no one will hurt you, I'm here. Breathe slowly. Like this."
With his arms outstretched but not touching, Sam settled down in front of her and took a few slowed breaths. He did that long enough until Y/N's breathing fitted itself to his rhythm.
Only then, he dared to get closer. Y/N followed. She was still crying but the shaking had stopped and she was leaning into him rather than curling in on herself.
Without having to think about it, Sam wrapped his arms around her and allowed her to press herself into him. He could feel her choking on her own sobs against his neck and it broke his heart.
Sam kissed the top of her head, his mind reeling. There had to be something that had caused this.
His eyes drifted over the clothes again, over Y/N herself who was wearing the baggiest hoodie that either of them owned. And then, Sam remembered her weariness towards the food earlier.
Oh no. His poor beautiful girl.
Sam wanted to kiss every part of her, every stretch mark, every patch of skin she thought to be imperfect - to show her that she was perfect exactly as she was.
Y/N was holding onto his shirt now, as if she was afraid that he would leave her. Yeah no. Not happening. In like ever.
"I'm not going anywhere," Sam whispered and pressed his lips against her temple.
Another quiet sob.
For a while, neither of them moved.
Eventually, Y/N calmed down slowly and her breathing evened. Soon, the tears stopped as well.
Only then, Sam dared to speak up. "Love, you know that you're perfect as you are, right?"
"'m not."
"You are," Sam insisted. He put a finger under her chin and softly pushed her head upwards.
Now that they were eye to eye, he could clearly see the doubts on her face. So he leaned forward and kissed her nose.
The soft touch startled a wet laugh out of Y/N. "What was that for?"
"I wanted to see you laugh." Sam cupped her cheek then, the edge of his thumb resting on her lip.
The honesty in his words had Y/N turn her head away but Sam could see the smile she was trying to hide.
And that was all he wanted. For the first time since he had entered the room, Sam allowed himself to relax. His shoulders slumped and the death grip he accidentally had on her hip loosened.
"Sorry," Y/N mumbled, her eyes skittering over the floor.
And there was the tension back. Sam all but pressed her back into his body, as if he could suffocate the bad thoughts out of her mind. "There's nothing to be sorry for, Y/N."
"But-"
"Nope," Sam interrupted her again, hands on her back protectively while his chin rested on top of her head, "I'm not letting you go until you're feeling better. And then, we'll find you a great outfit that you're comfortable in and go on our double date with Cas and Dean."
"He looked so happy when he said we'll go out," Y/N said and looked up.
Her eyes were swollen from crying and her face was blotchy but the smile on her lips made her the most gorgeous person Sam had ever met. The statement had caught him a little off guard though so Sam took a moment to answer.
"He is happy." Sam stated and squeezed her hip, "and so am I."
And because he could, Sam leaned down once more and kissed her. It was just a short peck but it made the blood rush into Y/N's cheeks all the same.
"Stop being so sweet," she scolded gently.
Sam chuckled. "Or what?"
"Or I might fall even more for you."
"I'm good with that." he grinned and ruffled her hair.
Y/N huffed and ducked away from his hand. Then, she pushed away completely and started recollecting her clothes. "Do you think it would be okay if I wore jeans and a sweater?"
"Of course, Love," Sam said and got up along with her to help fold up the various dresses and shirts.

i am currently made of jello but most of my drowsiness from meds i slept off and mom says it's my turn to make a rec list of Other TTRPGS To Play
skipping over some stuff i've seen recced several times (like bitd) bcos everyone knows that already, gotta do other stuff
Familiars Of Terra - play as a human hero and their magical animal companion, traveling across a post-post-apocalyptic world and bringing healing in your wake. genuinely hopeful game, can take a turn for the dark fairly easily but generally cathartic, absolutely astounding amount of lore & worldbuilding. mechanics on the crunchier side, enough to provide interesting character building & good structure for gameplay, but not too-too crunchy, u kno? card-based.
Dwindle - magical cyberpunk in a virtual city that is slowly fading away. focus on community and fighting back against the big corporations leeching away at your city, because maybe you can't stop it dying, but you can damn well try. fairly rules-light and allows a lot of room for interpretation, has unusual dice mechanics that get really very fun when you get into them.
The Dark Below - you want a spooky dungeon crawl? we got a spooky dungeon crawl! exiled from the city above for crimes most arbitrary (as the rules up there are... subject to change), you must make your way through the strange and twisted tunnels of the dark below. those who make it through and find the exit have their exiles ended and can return to their lives, but first they must survive the darkness...... (also if u die/fall to the dark u can elect to join the gm's side and get spooky with it. wanna haunt the narrative? fuck yeah.)
Trophy - speaking of spooky! trophy dark is all about treasure hunters heading unwittingly for their own doom. put yourself at risk, lean into the darkness, betray your companions, and gradually change to suit the whims of the dark forest. trophy gold is adjusted to be a little less doom and a little more adventure. there are also many many MANY trophy dark incursions out there (modules/hacks ppl have made all ready for u to play)
Bubblegum Wizards 2 - in a mixed-up interdimensional sprawl of a city, an infinite number of worlds are mashed together. out of all of them, you are wizards, casting spells with bubblegum and trading cards, hanging out at the magical corner store, and surviving in a sometimes hostile, sometimes beautiful, always deeply weird city.
Godeater - the gods are dead and dying. they are also enormous quantum-magical places sprawled across the world; within them are worlds all their own, also dead and dying, and releasing all kinds of fucked-up dangers as they do so. most people survive in the spaces between them, just barely; you are godeaters, people who venture into these twisted worlds to bring back the magic necessary for survival and growth--bits of the gods themselves. (godeater 2 now out!)
this is now so so long so a few others:
Spindlewheel - tarot-based storytelling
Songs for the Dusk - hopepunk forged in the dark
Glitter Hearts - magical girls time
Songbirds - knights help dragons deal with their feelings~
See You, Space Cowboy - cowboy bebop the game
Dark Designs in Verdigris - adventure through a fallen oz
Weasel Overdrive - be a magical noir sorta person in an uncaring cyberpunk metropolis
Weird Weird West - the wild west, but weird. c'mon.
have i got more games than this? you betcha!!! this was just a skim through some of the games i could think of off the top of my head. y'all there are so many. so many.

The British actor, who broke out in Netflix’s spooky anthology series from Mike Flanagan, speaks to Tom Murray about his thrilling new movie ‘Jackdaw’, his pride at appearing in ‘Hollyoaks’, and why he thinks he’s ‘too emotional’ to play 007.
Ihave this thing in my head,” Oliver Jackson-Cohen is telling me. “I don’t know where it comes from, but I am always convinced that everything I do is going to be s***. So I’m always pleasantly surprised that it’s not as s***ty as I think.”
The London-born actor really doesn’t need to be so anxious. Since landing his breakout role of heroin addict Luke Crain in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix anthology series The Haunting of Hill House in 2018, Jackson-Cohen has proven time and again his skill at playing damaged goods. Whether it’s his sociopathic turn as businessman Peter Quint in Flanagan’s sequel series The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), or as Dakota Johnson’s terrifying boyfriend in The Lost Daughter (2021), or as Elisabeth Moss’s see-through ex in The Invisible Man (2020), Jackson-Cohen has cemented himself as one of Hollywood’s go-to baddies.
But in his latest film, the 37-year-old is taking a stab at being the hero... sort of. Jackdaw is set against a bleak, wintry North East of England, with Jackson-Cohen playing an ex-motocross champion and army veteran who commits a crime in the hopes of starting a new life for his family.
The actor is the first to admit that the Jackdaw script was “fairly straightforward” for the action-thriller genre: a criminal job goes awry, family member gets kidnapped, man must save kidnapped family member. But he says that the film’s director, first-timer Jamie Childs, wanted to prove that genre films like these don’t have to be the preserve of the US. “He wanted to make movies that would be made in America in the Nineties, but set in the North East,” Jackson-Cohen explains. “He wanted to really showcase that and show that we can make these sorts of high-concept movies on small budgets in the UK.”
There are blatant American influences on the film – it’s all synths, rain and neon, like it’s been put under an Instagram filter named “Blade Runner”. I tell Jackson-Cohen that his character in the film, Jack Dawson, feels like a mash-up of Ryan Gosling’s criminal characters in Drive (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) – brooding, morally questionable types with good hearts at their core. “Yeah, like a Northern, poor man’s Ryan Gosling,” he jokes. “Listen, I’ll happily be a poor man’s Ryan Gosling for the rest of my life.”
Jackson-Cohen has a face that looks like it’s been carved by Bernini, so it’s no surprise to learn he originally found success as a model. On the day of our conversation, he’s wearing a frame-fitting black jumper; his stubble is grown out but perfectly manicured, as is his thick brown hair, which is styled into a messy quiff. A 2012 Harper’s Bazaar interview conducted at a London hotel noted a “perceptible thrill” that “rippled through the female staff” upon his arrival. His looks, accent and 6ft 3in height have also made him a perennial fixture in predictions for the next James Bond. But Jackson-Cohen is worried he’d be “too emotional” to play the part. “It’s such an iconic character, isn’t it?” he says. So if 007 producer Barbara Broccoli were to call, he’d send her to voicemail? “Of course not! No one’s gonna say no to Babs are they?”
If he does end up firing guns and sipping martinis for a few years, Jackson-Cohen would be the first Bond to have appeared in Hollyoaks, the teen soap infamous for its annual Hunks and Babes cast calendars. He booked a single-episode role on the show when he was 15 – his first acting gig. “I remember getting the phone call and being like: ‘This. Is. It,’” he says, grinning. “Walking into school the next day I was so full of myself.”
After training at London’s Youngblood Theatre Company and then the famed Lee Strasberg Institute in New York, he began booking supporting roles in a number of American films you probably don’t remember: the Dwayne Johnson clanger Faster (2010), Anna Faris’s What’s Your Number? (2011), or Going the Distance (2010), one of Drew Barrymore’s lesser romcoms. He’s spoken previously about the grand expectations he placed on his early film work, assuming they’d propel him into the big leagues. He was shattered when they didn’t, leading him to take a nine-month break from acting.
The Haunting of Hill House, in 2018, proved to be a turning point. It was a smash hit, earned him a rabid fanbase, and helped launch him into a particular kind of recognition – something he describes as “Netflix famous”. “It’s quite an interesting thing,” he says. “You’re the most famous person in the world for a while and then the next show comes along and that completely takes over.”
Regardless, the role was not without catharsis for him. He has spoken about how his own experience with childhood sexual abuse and PTSD influenced his take on the character. He first discussed it in 2017, during the #MeToo movement, writing on Instagram: “[I] have spent most of my life living with PTSD, pretending it didn’t happen, and now, trying to rebuild what was shattered. The thing about sexual abuse is that the moment it is done, however brief or however long, it changes the course of your life permanently.”
I ask him how the part impacted him, and for the first time in our conversation, the actor’s geniality falters and his face takes on a visible strain. “I think, if you speak to any of us from that cast, those characters meant so much to us because we put so much of ourselves into them,” he says. Flanagan, he says, was “incredibly collaborative” and “allowed me to just take the reins with it and left me alone to do that.” He also knows the part struck a chord with audiences. He remembers being approached by strangers in public who’d share their stories of addiction. “I think ultimately all of us feel incredibly proud that it hit a note with people and it allowed people to open up a discussion, to feel like they could talk about this stuff.”
As soon as Hill House was released, Jackson-Cohen says he was sent “a slew of horror scripts” that were “all the same thing, just a watered-down, less good versions [of the show]”. He names Ira Sachs’s raunchy gay drama Passages, Jonathan Glazer’s new Holocaust film Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s awards season darling Anatomy of a Fall as films he’s admired from afar this past year. “I don’t think there’s a formula of: you work with this director and this writer and then, success. But I do think you reach a point where you’re like, ‘Oh I do actually want more out of this.’”
He knows, for instance, that he’s seen a certain way by casting directors. “I’ve played quite a lot of toxic men. But I’ve become fascinated with the question of, ‘how do we humanise these morally corrupt characters?’ There’s a challenge in that, which I think is quite fun. But, like anything, you go through periods where you like to play a certain thing and then it’s time to move on.”
So no more baddies? He weighs it up.
“I think I’ve played my fair share now.”
‘Jackdaw’ is in cinemas now.

sry i love the idea of survivor bti rebecca so much cuz just imagine for a sec some drabble that starts off similar to a springtrap x reader fic like frighteningly intriguing or smthn but instead of romance its like “the fuck thats my dad” it would be so hilarious
Ohoho. Hoh. Y’all really just like my shit mashed together with other people’s universes huh? This definitely got me thinking though because @glitchysquidd’s notebook pages are quite compelling… After reading what I could of it to get an idea, this is going to be far from hilarious. It is going to be god awful, especially since poor Rebecca in this blurry fnaf timeline is still technically a minor. I hope the original creator of Frighteningly Intriguing does get a kick out of this though. Your stuff is a very fun read and I worked hard to make this even remotely comparable.
No read more because tumblr is glitching my text when I use it. Trigger warnings for autism meltdowns, flashbacks, trauma, and the obvious mentions of death. Let’s go…
It All Comes Back to Haunt You
“Ugh…”
A teenage girl groaned as she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket again. Micheal would not leave her the hell alone. She had spoken with Tim and Samantha already. They seemed more excited about her “past experience” with the animatronics than anything else. Her brother was supposed to take the job, but after a horrible amount of hallucinations he got just entering the building, she volunteered. He was not happy about it, but Henry wouldn’t let him go back until he recovered.
She had one night to actually be able to do something besides sit at home and hope the rest of her loved ones didn’t die horribly. This was her chance to prove herself in a sense. The Afton name followed her even after witness protection tried to erase it from her records. Her classmates knew who her father was. Of course they did. There was a whole fanbase of people who idolized him. Others stuck to throwing cafeteria food at her and telling her she should’ve died by her father’s hand and joined the rest of them.
She couldn’t say she disagreed…
Looking over the note left for her, she wandered around the empty horror attraction, searching for the other employee she was meeting up with. A couple of her peers wanted to trick her into coming to this place on halloween to cause her to have flashbacks. She heard their plans while eating lunch one day. What’s weird is she didn’t feel like she was reliving past trauma at all. The animatronics she just stumbled upon, the old models… Those were her friends… Hell, one of them was her own brother. They saved her life that night…
The teen didn’t flinch when Freddy’s head moved a bit, dead eyes sparking in recognition. Instead she just mumbled awkwardly, “H-hi, Gabe… I uh… hope everyone’s been doing alright… I’ll come see you later, o-okay…?”
“Let us sleep…” A ghostly child’s voice grumbled tiredly.
“S-sorry, guys…”
She didn’t argue, slowly shutting the door and continuing her search, soon overhearing faint conversation. Rebecca felt Micheal blowing up her phone again, and finally looked.
“Is his workshop still there? Henry wants to know if you could snap some pictures of blueprints.”
That was a good question, and she just stumbled upon the answer. Why was it wide open? Maybe her employers found it? Yeah, she’d go with that. The room was like a time capsule, mesmerizing her in an encompassing nostalgia. She remembered playing in this room so much as a little girl… Her father used to sit right here with her on his lap and she’d scribble on his scrap paper—
No. No no no. No diving into the past. Pulling out her phone, she snapped a few pics and tried to leave. The familiar head of a yellow rabbit lying against the wall froze her solid. Maybe she had underestimated the amount of trauma this task would bring back… Oh God… Was that her brother’s picture, and the address written after the bite? Her heart was starting to hurt more than her head…
“Who’s there?!”
A voice made her jump, putting down papers she was sifting through. A slightly beat up figure approached.
“Listen, don’t make me call the police, kid—“
Rebecca handed over the note, noticing the other person squint tiredly.
“You’re the one they hired to shadow me? You’re a little young.”
She nodded, “I-I’m Rebecca. My uh… my brother couldn’t make it…”
“Fine…” Her new coworker didn’t seem too thrilled for some reason, “Come on. I guess you gotta meet Dave.”
“Dave?” Rebecca echoed in bewilderment, “I thought they said we were the only two employees he—“
“Dave’s not an employee. He’s kinda scary. Smells awful. Walking biohazard. Still, he’s pretty cool.”
What the fuck were they talking about? If this “Dave” wasn’t a staff member then— Did they mean an animatronic they named Dave for comedic effect?
Then she saw it. The head peeking from around the distant corner down the hall… The head of the other Spring Bonnie suit. The same one she watched springlock her father when she was six, while she was on the ground with a knife in her body. She froze, feeling her heart drop to her feet.
“W-what the hell is that?!”
“That’s Dave...” Her mysterious coworker shrugged, “No need to actually be scared of him. He’s…relatively harmless…”
Rebecca knew for a fact his name wasn’t Dave. Her dad was just as bad at coming up with fake names to hide his identity as Micheal was. God, if she ever made it home, Henry and Mikey would not be happy to hear William Afton was back. This poor innocent person had no idea who they were dealing with! What should she say? Could she say something?!
Nope… She was in full meltdown mode now, totally mute. The teen felt her mind leave the current moment and rewind back years in the past. Her mother had convinced her she made up her family outside of herself and Micheal… She didn’t even recognize William as her father until he forced her to look at the suit that jogged her memory. He held her and told her he loved her, before a sharp pain pierced her back. She recalled seeing the ghosts of the children and the puppet standing between them… Then the springlocks went off. His screams haunted her as she passed out.
After that… It was a long stay at the hospital, which made her remember the siblings she was told she made up all the more… Loads of therapy later, she was staying with Micheal and Henry trying to repair her life to some form of normalcy without her mother… The best thing her father did was set her free from her mother, but that was besides the point. All the while the traumatic experience became the talk of the world, it seemed. True crime podcasts, news reports, so many fans of the franchise trying to find her and ask her about her experiences…
This was all some spooky story to the rest of the world, and this hooky horror attraction all but proved it. It was all fun and games until your siblings died and your father comforted you as he stabbed you in the back both figuratively and literally. Of course…
When she finally grounded herself, she nearly lost all the air in her lungs as she realized he was now a foot away from her.
“Dave! Personal space! Can’t you see she’s freaked out?!” Her coworker was starting to get concerned.
The animatronic rabbit rolled his eyes, all but confirming to Rebecca this was definitely still her dad. He was the type to scoff at anyone giving him advice in such a situation. His dead eyes almost seemed concerned when he shifted his gaze to her. That terrified her further. The last time he looked concerned for her was when she got stabbed.
“Hey hey…” The other employee spoke slightly softer, “Dude all the color is gone from your face… Here, sit down… Try to breathe… I’m gonna grab you some water…”
WAIT.
NO.
DON’T LEAVE HER ALONE WITH—
Her phone was buzzing like crazy. She didn’t dare take it out. She couldn’t. Trying to breathe, she gasped and choked on air as “Dave” sat down next to her, far too casually. This was painful. Was he trying to give her cardiac arrest?!
He was totally silent, besides the sounds of his joints ticking and popping unnaturally with his movements. It occurred to her with the stench that his body was still in there, making her gag. Her attempts to catch her breath were the loudest sounds for a few moments. It was almost calm… until she felt a hand on her back.
She would have screamed if she had any voice to scream with. Instead, the teen stiffened at the feeling of his hand feeling over her shirt, clearly noticing the slight bump of the scar she had down her back from his own actions. His eyes almost lit up at that, whether in a positive or negative way she had no idea. It seemed he was surprised she didn’t pull away. It was because she couldn’t due to paralyzing terror.
“S-stop pretending already…” She stammered, “I-if you want to finish it… J-just—“
His ears drooped slightly, and he almost sighed…?
What was up with him?! He wouldn’t even say a single word to her after all of what he put her through?! Wait… Could he even talk?
Footsteps made Rebecca relax a bit as her coworker had returned with water. She grabbed their arm to be helped up, and eagerly created space between herself and the figure sitting next to her. She pulled out her phone and with trembling hands found herself not texting her brother or Henry for help. She just left them on read. As much as she wanted to believe her own father was safe, it could seal her doom like it did before. She knew not to underestimate him, but she didn’t want to be a coward…
She was also worried about this other person who had no idea what they were up against. This was no time to fear the results of her actions. This was potentially another life on the line. She typed on the notes app on her phone and showed it to her coworker.
“I can’t talk right now, but please listen to me. Dave isn’t his name. He’s lying.”
“What? How would you know his name? You just got here.” They scoffed, almost playfully, obviously not taking her seriously, “I think you’re still in shock, dude…”
She could feel her father’s eyes on her even without looking up from the screen. As much therapy as she went through and as much as she knew her father did terrible things, she couldn’t help but feel guilty for doing anything to harm him. It was still her father, after all… Is it bad she missed him? After remembering all the things her mother told her were her imagination filling in loneliness from her autism… Was it bad she wanted her whole family back?
She was jolted out of her feelings when Henry tried calling her, but she pressed decline. This happened about three more times with Micheal’s number within the next two minutes.
“Yeesh…” Her new acquaintance commented jokingly, “Family won’t get off your back, huh? I don’t miss being your age, that’s for sure. Nobody thinks you’re capable of anything.”
Finally, a text from Mikey sealed her fate for the night and any future nights.
“That’s it. I’m coming to get you.”
She spat out the water she sipped, confused at why she was upset Micheal was coming to save her… Well… Rebecca still felt like she didn’t deserve to be saved the first time, so… Maybe it was that with her dad still here, she was finally hoping for this nightmare to end how it should have back then? She should’ve died. That was all she ever heard from doctors and police and kids at school… Yet she continued on living… She couldn’t count how many times people who knew who she was related to expected her to “snap” just like her parents.
As much as she loved Micheal and Henry for supporting her, she felt like she dragged them down by not being able to hate her father’s guts like they did. She was so young when it happened. Her mind was so cloudy on whether he actually cared in those moments or not. It was so confusing… Her mother’s gaslighting made it difficult enough without finding out her father was real and a serial killer. Then there was the matter of how just before she was born this whole mess started…
What did she do wrong to make her happy family fall apart before her very eyes…? Should she have been born at all…? Was she the one to blame for all of this? Of course. Who else would it be…? All those kids who died… Her mother being killed while baking her birthday cake because she just had to go see the animatronics she was banned from seeing that day with Mr. Emily… This all wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been what he was after… It was all her fault. She knew it deep down, too…
“Shit… A-Are you crying…?” The voice of the adult beside her sounded worried, “Was it something I said— DAVE! YOU ARE NOT FUCKING HELPING!”
The rabbit stiffened at being screamed at, but still stood up and approached. Before anyone could stop him, he hugged this seemingly random teenager in a manner uncharacteristic to his entire personality.
“What the hell’s gotten into y—“
Rebecca’s eyes shot open wide, as she began shivering and losing strength in her feet. She was prepared for the pain of the knife…a springlock mechanism… something to impale her and leave her bleeding out on the grimy floors, like just another prop in this haunted house built around her trauma.
…Yet nothing came. No stabbing, no blood coughed out of her mouth... This wasn’t like before. This was…just a hug? A…real one? From him?! She finally looked up at the masked face, silently demanding some sort of answer behind the whirlwind of emotion she was trapped in. He didn’t say a word, looking down at her and daintily moving some hair out of her eyes. His hold on her was careful, but also possessive. He wanted to keep her close to him for as long as he could…
Eventually the third figure pried her out of the rabbit’s steel grip, much to his upset as he stomped his foot to make a loud thud echo down the hallway. Her phone vibrated. Rebecca knew her brother was waiting outside, and would rather not have him break in to see this. She slowly turned to the door, shaken and shocked by what had unfolded. She almost wanted to go back to hug him one last time. No way she would be allowed back once Micheal and Henry found out…
“My rides here… They want me to come home. My brother is gonna come instead. He just needed someone else to cover for one night…”
She showed the phone mainly to the other person, but her father did see what it said and nodded solemnly, much to her surprise.
Springtrap followed them to the doorway as much as he could without being seen, and watched as his more recently met friend sent off the teen, who ended up running straight to a hooded figure. Micheal was taking care of her at least… He could overhear the conversation.
“She had a panic attack or something when she saw one of the animatronics in the attraction.” The employee’s voice sounded confused, but also slightly dismissive, “Probably just a little spook.”
“Thanks for looking out for her.” Micheal replied, “Can I ask which one of them it was?”
“J-just Bonnie.” Rebecca piped up suddenly.
Wait. Did his daughter just cover for him… or was she scared of Micheal’s reaction to finding out he was still here…?
William felt like it was both, but that included the former, and that nearly melted his dead metal heart. God, of course she still cared about him. She was too young to actually have the capacity to hate him for what he’d done to her back then. She was the youngest child he ever attempted killing. This wasn’t supposed to end like this for her… It stung seeing her still impacted by it after all these years. This wasn’t supposed to be her fate.
He wished he had gotten the job done on the night of her sixth birthday, if only to spare her from this haunting her for the rest of her life.
After the pair of siblings left, the only words that came next were:
“Dave, what the flying fuck was that?”

re: the tv tropes page it is SO bad. full on fanon being included in the character page (not even the ymmv page), like y'all. have your headcanons but please stop forcing them on everyone else
yeah in most cases i’m skeptical that ‘forcing headcanons’ on people is actually a thing that happens because 99% of the time that grievance could be sufficiently addressed if people would only curate their feeds so they see the content they wanna see, but this might be a legitimate example of such a thing.
it is annoying because tvtropes is a great tool for understanding the technical aspects of storytelling and getting a general overview of a show and how content-making techniques can help deliver messaging (e.g. lighting, sound, sfx, camera angles). i’ve been using it for that purpose for years and i’ve found only recently that i’ve been encountering this problem more and more.
it’s been a while since i looked at the MASH page because i’ve basically written it off, but if memory serves the character pages were pretty unreliable. it could be that people have are projecting their personal interpretations/feelings on the show (any reading will have some amount of this) but some of the reaches on there are dishonest about the text.
MASH is a show that lacks continuity and is full of gags. it is also a show from another completely different era of television and the world. without some knowledge of that time, your interpretation might be lacking. many episode titles are puns or a play on an existing piece of media from the first half of the 20th century - but you rarely see that addressed nowadays in the fandom because we’re (mostly) a different generation. there’s a difference between saying ‘radar is psychic’ and ‘a running gag on the show is that radar is psychic’ - does that mean MASH has a canonical magical realism aspect to it? no, of course not. but i sure as hell could find a way to make it seem that way to a person who has never seen it just by being a bit creative, telling half-truths and remixing things i know to be true about the show - aka, writing an AU. it’s like that “mash is haunted” post floating around on tumblr - it’s great in the format that it’s in, but on tvtropes, production flubs need to be called what they are - flubs - and not “trapper is haunting the OR” - those are the rules of engagement on TV tropes.
the rest under a this cut because i talk specifically about one of my most be-loathed myths that the MASH tv tropes page seems to want me to believe: hawkeye the “canonical” CSA/rape survivor
i say ‘let me leave shipping out of this’ a lot because i do get the sense that if i don’t give non-shippy examples of this happening that it’s valid for people to think i’m projecting a shipping bias onto my argument because a lot of fandom discourse is frankly, about shipping. so here: something I remember really rubbing me the wrong way about the MASH tv tropes page was how much it seemed to insist that Hawkeye was a CSA survivor.
i am not saying that this is not viable or that it is a bad reading or even that i disagree with it as an interpretation of the source material, but framing it like it’s an undeniable part of his character that other characters acknowledge is just - it’s not there! and if canonical portrayals of survivors are important to you, I don’t see how pretending that Hawkeye is a CSA survivor and trying to convince other people of that before they’ve even watched the show is “good representation”.
it gives way for all sorts of other misunderstandings of the show, for example, his “loose morals” around sexuality which are first and foremost about his being anti-establishment, that is something which is key to his character and tbh if you subscribe to the HC that hawkeye is a survivor of abuse then his being a scrappy, unconventional male lead who turns his nose up to traditional masculinity only enriches that HC in my opinion.

The Tree of Whimsy stood tall and proud in the surrounding forest of birch trees. Scar, a tree connoisseur, had finally found some time to come see it, and was delighted.
“Amazing! I mean, it’s not as good as my tree, but it’s a close second.” Scar gave Bdubs a winning smile and a wink.
“Ha ha. Very funny, elf man.” Bdubs chuckled. He was back from one of his long treks across the lands, looking for places for his puzzles, and had found Scar just standing at the base of the Tree of Whimsy. “So, what are you doing here anyway? Looking for inspiration?”
“Oh, no, little man, don’t you worry, I’m not here to plagiarize.” Scar reached out and touched the bark of the tree. “I was just curious about it, is all. Seems to have popped up out of nowhere. Very mysterious, you have to admit.”
“First of all, I’m not short I’m average height. Second of all, uh yeah, it’s a magical tree, whimsy and all that. Listen, I just do what I’m told, and I was told to plant a seed. You know, I’ve never told anyone, but I have a lot of questions about it all. I found a secret room under my house, and I have to wonder if it was the right choice to plant this tree. It haunts me.”
“You know what I wonder?” Scar, ignoring Bdubs completely, mused. “You see, I have an elven bed that makes you sleepy just by looking at it. I can’t tell you the amount of times I have stumbled upon someone who had been looking for me fast asleep on that bed. I’m wondering what would happen if you put the bed under this tree you have here. Clearly, they’re both full of mystical powers. It’s science, mashing two magical items together.”
“Maybe you’re just tired all the time from constantly building and being annoying, you ever consider that?” Bdubs, a bit miffed that Scar wasn’t listening to him.
“I think we need to test this. I’ll go get the bed and reconstruct it here.” Scar, not listening to him, went off to fetch the bed.
——
Scar wasn’t wrong though- Bdubs couldn’t stand to look at the bed while Scar constructed it or he would feel immense tiredness wash over him like a wave. He even had to go wake Scar up a few times while building it, with a hand over his eyes for safety.
“It’s just so comfy cozy, don’t you just wanna…” Scar let out a huge yawn. He nailed in a few more bits, and then it was done. “Oh, and look at that! Just in time for sunset! Come on, Bdubs, time for sleepy time!”
“What?” Bdubs turned around, holding out a hand to block the bed from his view. “I am not getting into bed with you!”
“Oh, come on.” Scar was already climbing onto the cozy mattress. “Don’t be such a prude. You’ll be asleep in like three seconds.”
The bed was calling to him. Oh, the king of sleep, how could he refuse such a comfy looking bed? He sighed and clambered in next to Scar. “If anyone sees us from the sky, we’ll be the laughing stock of the town for months.” His eyes were already fluttering closed.
“Two bros, chillin’ on a big bed, five feet apart-” Scar began to sing, but they both fell asleep before he could finish.
There is something to be said about the tree of whimsey, the way it whispers in the wind. And it’s something else to have Scar’s bed under it, built from a cursed wood. The hermits like to play with forces bigger then themselves, over and over until one of them breaks. Little fucked up experiments that make you wonder just how they have kept their minds over the years.
Bdubs dreamed of the tree. It was made of tiny intricate mazes and puzzles, and it leered over him. He dreamed of moss, soft to the touch, and yet the tree almost doubled to grab at him. He dreamed of a wooden throne, one that was made of the tree and had every limb tied down to it. But he was king. And the little ants played his games. But they weren’t really his games.
Scar dreamed of something just out of reach. It was in the mist, and he could hear it, hear the screams he hoped were happy, the thunder of the ride tracks. He could almost smell the perfume of the trees and flowers, and the laughter of his friends. If only he could see the joy. But he couldn’t, and something inside him told him he never would.
The two woke in the morning as the sun rose. xB was standing over them, communicator out, taking a picture.
“I’m sending this to the hermit groupchat. You can’t stop me.” xB told them with a wicked grin, and took off.
“Damn him.” Bdubs muttered, getting out of the bed, taking off his sleeping cap and running his fingers through his hair, messing it up even more. He always had the worst bed head.
Scar yawned and stretched, looking as perfect and put together as when he went to sleep. Not a single hair was out of place.
“How did you sleep?” Bdubs asked, sitting down on a bench facing away from the bed.
“Good, good, how about you?” Scar wheeled himself over.
“Good… any, uh, stuff happen?” Bdubs picked at a fingernail.
“Nope.” Scar was lying.
“Same here.” Bdubs was also lying.
They both knew the other was lying. But the uneasy feelings they both had were too dark to express out loud. Their dreams clung to them like some kind of muddy pond water, something that can’t be cleaned out or forgotten about.

Regina spektor anon with further thoughts clogging up your inbox. Im still really in my feelings about Goodbye Radar. I loved how how bittersweet and cruel the turn of fate that allowed him to return home is- the loss that kicks off his homecoming. he came of age overseas at war and hes coming back home as a different person and whats more his home is changed. The loss of uncle ed is such a good writing choice- its the death of radar's first and dearest father figure and its a death that takes him away from a camp full of father figures he had filling in for uncle ed while they were seperated by distance. I think the reason for that is that its sort of a coming of age milestone- in the absence of all possible male rolemodels he is now definitively his own. Youre so proud of him for growing to be his own person but you feel so heartsick hes had to do it like this. I liked how the episodes really focused in on radars strengths and his persepctive and also the love that the camp has for him. I was really taken with Klinger's guilt at being the inciting reason why Radar felt he had to stay- its not the main focus of the ep but i found myself rlly interested in it. Klinger doesnt usually get caught up in feeling responsible for stuff cus he never consented to being assigned them in the first place, but this clearly got to him I also like how the ep shows that radar's job is rlly hard and klinger's not really up to it yet, but it lays out how he might come to fill radar's absence with a new, very different approach that promises to be just as effective albiet more chaotic.
Also this ep really hammered home something that i think might be one of my absolute favorite elements of mash, which is its capacity to create really significant moments in the heat of wartime chaos, the moments you know the character witnessing it will revisit over and over in their mind's eye long after they've gone from the war. Often they're very surreal and haunting visuals, like a fully decked out bride conducting wounded from choppers to the operating table, or klinger made up in finery doing military gruntwork, or hawkeyes bizarre antics, or the empty camp decked out with Radar's goodbye party decorations promising a warm sendoff that never happens, or the outdoor surgery that happens by the light of a circle of jeeps. But just as often they are just. Wartime slice of life tableaus that just *stick* with you. Deluge and the interview is full of that, but these two episodes, esp the very end, is full of them too margaret hurriedly running backwards with a gurney, trying to have a meaningful goodbye but lacking the time to even physically stop to say goodbye or to come up with anything better than "you're alright". Hawkeye's silent salute in the operating room. Radars hourlong conversation at the airport with that nurse from missouri, patty. Potter's goodbye, bj's kisses on the cheek. All these truncated emotional moments that try to fit so much into so little time because the chaos of the moment steals your ability to process events let alone feelings. Idk im talking a lot but i just love it so much all these moments in time feel so true to life. Im so curious how it goes from here, radars character was something special. Ok rant over.
yeah i feel like mash does goodbyes particularly well!! like most shows would be tempted to give big, dramatic send offs to their characters but with mash it's like. sometimes you just don't have the time to say all you want to say. sometimes people are in your life - and the next second they' gone. mash's exits aren't very neat even when they do take the time to pay tribute to the characters and i really appreciate that because it just feels. real
(and yeah, sometimes its serendipitous - i imagine trapper would've had a different goodbye if they'd known wayne rogers wouldn't stay)
hawkeye's salute in the operating room legit made me cry when i first watched the episode though. that man NEVER gets to have a proper goodbye my god
very very interested how you're gonna react to period of adjustment anon! mostly because it deals with what you talked about vis a vis klinger but also because its one of the beej episodes of all time

takes a small break from writing long rambles about characters to write down some episodes I felt were very good as specifically later-series entries (there were other episodes that I enjoyed A Lot, and honestly none that I disliked, this is just in relation to the feeling I was having throughout the season that I was gravitating towards wanting explorations of characters/themes/narratives that aligned with where they were at this point in the story)
that’s show biz: yeah, yeah I know people think this one is too long, but to be honest I kind of appreciated just existing in the 4077th for an extended time at this juncture, so it’s hard for me to gauge with an objective eye towards pacing within the episode itself
follies of the living - concerns of the dead: we all knew MASH was haunted, and then s10 was like... yeah but what if MASH is haunted and that forces you to re-evaluate every season that’s come before!
pressure points: this is mainly as a Potter episode, rather than what’s happening in the swamp. we’ve seen him have doubts related to age before, but this one acts (in my opinion) well with the feeling of exhaustion that seeps through the latter parts of a story like this and as an interaction with those previous episodes. and of course, single Sidney episode of the season
where there’s a will, there’s a war: I mean, obviously I’m a sap for upset Hawkeye (when it’s done right), and the little vignettes to the other main characters felt right -- they know each other so well at this point, it feels right that Hawkeye would want to amend his will (while in a tense situation) to include his family at the 4077th
promotion commotion: not much to say (although I said much more in the post about Klinger), simply a great culmination of Klinger’s trajectory, we love to see it happening!
picture this: I wish that the argument created for this episode wasn’t so centred on Hawkeye, and also not mainly about BJ, Charles, and Hawkeye, because the best part of it really was Potter being like “these are my kids... they are all... so stupid...” and the loving picture he painted of them
OVERALL: I wonder if this feels very different if you’ve watched it as syndication first/watch them out of order -- because I’ve been going through this show for the very first time entirely in the order that it aired + have had barely any notions about how people engage with it, I think I have gotten to see it from a slightly different angle than is (currently) overall more common
that + the way I keep mentally comparing it to ds9 for various reasons + growing up with mainly overarching tv-show narratives + the state of mind I’m currently in as I watch it.... lot of factors

👻🕯Selfshiptober- Day 6: Haunted
October 6, Day 6, Haunted
"No."
"Whattttt!? Come on babe. Honey-" Gonzo exclaimed. They attempted to lean on their wife. "My catapult, my dynamite, my raging bull-"
"I don't like haunted houses Gonzo!" She sighed, rather playfully. Hitting the table she was sitting at in the process.
"You know what happened last time. You saw a ghost version of me and you had to confront your fears of being alone it was a whole movie special."
He groaned, leaning against the table. "Liciiiiii... this one different! This one isn't free and I gotta pay for it and also there isnt a suspicious magican with a pet fish."
She stared them down. He blinked, holding his hands. "Fine. When is it."
"Tonight! Get your coat on!"
God this man was a nuisance.
She got changed, got her coat, and met him outside. Where he was starting the car and heating it up. A new button up. Pumpkins all over it, along with a red skirt and dark red boots.
"Nice outfit," she winked, grabbing the driver side door and pulling it open.
"Not to bad yourself," he replied, almost more charming than she had before.
Thr two got into the car, drove an hour to a haunted house.... and waited in a very long parking line.
The guy who gave them a ticket for their car and took their parking money recognized them immediately too.
"Oh my god.... the great gonzo!"
They leaned over their wife to pose. "Yup that's me! Me n my lovely daredevil are gonna visit this place! Give it a try!"
"Wow! Well I hope you have fun!!"
The girl drove off before he could even start rambling. Of course a usual, 'wow what a nice guy' and little bits were said.
The...
The haunted house was something!!!
The entire them it was. Yeah it happened and both of them left unsatisfied.
Money lost to a mediocre house that didn't even scare them.
"You would think they'd put a bit more effort in!!!!" Gonzo exclaimed leaving the place.
"I'm not gonna lie babe, I had like 0 confidence the moment we pulled into a crammed parking lot."
They huffed, crossing their arms. "I guess...."
She put a hand to their shoulder. "At least you didn't almost die!"
"That's where the fun is!!! You know I love a good thrill and I wasn't expecting DEATH from this place, but I was expecting at least a jump!"
"Well how about we JUMP to Kermits place and play halloween just dance with the gang. Invite them over."
"Monster mash?" He raised an eyebrow.
She gave him a big ol kiss. "And time warp."
"Woo. Boy. Sold," he smirked up at her.

So what is your fnaf au like? Does it take place in fnaf 1? Is michael scooped? Is purple guy and the dead kids in the afterlife?
Man, I haven't really put much thought into it uhh. I'd like to think it's post pizza sim? The location is like an upgrade of the fnaf 1 and 2 location mashed up into 1.
For the dead kids? I'd like to think they did go to heaven. Since I said it's post pizza sim. Meaning Michael didn't die in the fire with his haunted wacky family, since uh I'd like to think Henry did have an exit for Michael, and hc he does think of Michael as his own son. And yeah Michael is scooped, but he made a major recovery. He was put out of commission for like a year since uhh he recovered from being all lean.
As for Henry, he uh yeah chose to stay in the place with his daughter and go 🔥🔥🔥. Michael made it out, although with a burn scar to the right side of his body. In this (technically happier au), most of the nightguards are still alive and the robots can still kill you? They just look at you real creepily and might 'malfunction' from time to time. Oh right there is SB, I'd like to imagine that Vanessa has a twin (Vanny)+ (Inspo from quiet tomato) who's just batshit insane and a William stan. Who works in the uh new pizzeria? Somewhere as like a nightguard too, along with her sister. Vanny messes with the ai of the robots when no one knows she's in the premises. AAA this is too long for me to explain now that I remember SB, Gregory and etc. But yeah feel free to ask about it!

[theme park review] universal’s halloween horror nights 31 (2022)
we made our triumphant return to halloween horror nights! honestly i’m pretty sure we’re gonna try to do this basically every year if we can.
so, yeah! they opened the gates for halloween horror nights about half an hour early (my understanding is they open it basically as soon as they’re ready, so they oftentimes end up being a little early) and it took us a while to get through the line. the lines for the halloween haunted house and the weekend haunted house (more on that later) immediately exploded to over an hour wait for both, so we headed for universal monsters: legends collide.
we passed through some of the scarezones on the way there, but didn’t really stop to enjoy them because we figured we were better off getting in a line as soon as possible after opening, but i still got to be adorably (and kinda flirtily) shy & scared when some of the scare actors jumped at me, so that was cool.
while we were queuing up for the universal monsters haunted house, the sky just absolutely opened up. a few people in line whipped out ponchos, we were equipped with umbrellas. the rain honestly did kinda suck in the sense that it sometimes limited how much we could interact in line, but we also knew it would likely drive some people away and make some of the lines shorter, so that kind of changed our strategy for the rest of the night honestly.
in spite of the umbrellas i did get pretty soaked waiting in line for this one, but eventually we put away our umbrellas and put on our masks (the pandemic is still a pandemic no matter what certain presidents who shall remain nameless have said, y’all) and made our way inside.
this mashup of three monsters didn’t have an obvious, epic story like last year’s bride of frankenstein house, but it didn’t do anything to dissuade me from the belief that the universal monsters house is just always going to be a must-see house every year. and honestly the story that it did have wasn’t half-bad, it might’ve even made a better monster mash movie than house of frankenstein or house of dracula? dracula basically preys on wolf man’s strange desire not to be a werewolf by sending him an anonymous letter about an amulet that can control the power of the sun while the mummy is woken by a high priest to protect said amulet. dracula is hoping to exploit the confusion to steal the amulet for himself to give himself the power to prey in the day as well as at night.
as always the scenery and costumes were just phenomenal. in addition to the just generally great production values of the setting, there were specifically some really cool anubis statues. i’ve mentioned before that usually my strategy in these haunted houses is to hide behind my partner to encourage the scare actors to see me as a weaker target and bully me, but since the universal monster houses are less about the spooks and more about the awesome scenery and attention to detail, i ended up deciding to take the lead for this one.
and yeah, even though he’s hardly one of the hotter werewolves out there, i still totally shyly waved or threw heart emojis at some of the wolf man scare actors we came across. no shame here.
by the time we got out it was just pouring rain, and in spite of our umbrellas we got pretty soaked, but we also saw that all of the haunted houses had unbelievably short waits, so we decided to rush over to the halloween one. i think the wait was something like 35 minutes, when it has pretty consistently been averaging over an hour even on slow nights. what a seriously charmed couple of days at theme parks. our original plan had been to do one of the licensed haunted houses (which ended up being universal monsters) at the beginning of the night and then save our longest line (probably halloween) for the end of the night. instead, here we were just over an hour into our night and already about to knock out two of what should have been the longer waits.
i’m going to be honest, even though i love halloween and i was sure they were going to do a good job, i wasn’t actually super excited for this haunted house? it kind of mirrored my experience with the beetlejuice house last year. like, again, i knew it would be very impressive and i would like it, but my thinking with these always ends up being more or less “they’re just going to recreate some of the best scenes from the movie, right?” and my inclination is always to think that i’m going to get more out of the houses that aren’t based on licensed properties or the universal monsters house where it’s based on a licensed property but they’re explicitly telling their own story, right?
there is certainly a lot of truth to that, but wow were my expectations for this house not nearly high enough. they just nailed this one. which makes sense because they for sure threw a ton of resources at it, but i’m still just beyond impressed with how they not only recreated a lot of the best scenes from the movie but just really, truly made you feel like you were there, like you were a part of them and actually experiencing them. the scare actors were on point. seriously, this was just incredible.
also after the recreation of the opening scene where a clown-masked michael kills his older sister, they had a title card??? like, there was this pitch black room with the actual freaking title card from the movie brightly illuminated and it was conceptually adorable but also just damn impressively moody and i actually just cannot believe how effectively they translated this movie into a theme park attraction. i’m actually in awe. i know they do this with at least one of these movies every year, but it’s still hard not to feel like “how did they do that???” every single time.
it was still raining when we got out but wait times were nevertheless starting to go up. but the last licensed house we wanted to do still had about a half hour wait so we decided to jump on that before it got longer. and then all we would have left for the rest of the night was original concept houses, which would be a huge, unexpected load off.
the horrors of blumhouse was much more the kind of experience i expect to have in the haunted houses based on licensed properties. it did a great job of recreating scenes from both movies it’s based on, sometimes in pretty clever ways. mashing both movies up into one house was a pretty good way to get mileage out of both of them, because i don’t think either one could have carried a house on its own honestly. but as much as i appreciate the effort that went into this one, it just wasn’t that scary? and unlike the universal monsters houses, it doesn’t really offer anything else to make up for its lack of scariness?
i don’t know. probably the fact that we did it right after the fucking incredible halloween house didn’t do it any favors, but at the end of the day this one just really didn’t leave much of an impression on me. it was fine.
the only licensed property haunted house i haven’t mentioned yet was the weekend: after hours nightmare, and i’m sure it’s great because they probably put a lot of resources & effort into it but it was nevertheless a pretty easy skip. neither of us listen to the band, the overall concept of having a haunted house based on an album seems kinda weird tbh, and word of mouth had this as one of the longest lines every day so it was basically the same situation as stranger things in 2019 or that other netflix series neither of us watched last year.
so that just leaves the always-awesome original houses! of those, we only missed out on dead man’s pier: winter’s wake and descendants of destruction. both of them sounded pretty up my alley (especially dead man’s pier), but we only had time for so many!
the ones we made it to kicked ass as always, though. the first one we made it to, as the rain was starting to truly calm down, was fiesta de chupacabras. the story here is basically that a village is luring clueless tourists in so they can kidnap them, kill them, and feed them to the chupacabras to avoid being preyed on themselves. there’s some fantastic bondage & murder imagery going on throughout, which if you’ve been following me for long you know i’m hella into because i’m that kind of a weirdo. i kinda wish the villagers had more explicitly threatened us with the same fate, but it was pretty heavily implied! also the chupacabra animatronics were fantastic.
next up was spirits of the coven, which it will likely shock no one is the one i was the most insistent upon not missing. the general idea is that it’s the 1920s and a bunch of witches are running a speakeasy that lured in men to be kidnapped & murdered to be used as ingredients in their “witches’ brew.” obviously i don’t love the heteronormativity there, but whatever! the setting was awesome, the costumes were awesome, and as long as they also accept enby victims i love the implied peril of the whole thing. and there’s even some great bondage imagery towards the end with some of their victims’ eyes & mouths sewed shut! gnarly.
after this the rain basically stopped and they finally started to run the scarezones again, so as we were making our way through the last few haunted houses we started taking our time going through all the scarezones because honestly they’re just as fun as the haunted houses in their own way? i don’t have any specific notes on any of them, but yeah they were all on point as always seems to be the case!
we were both running out of steam when we made it to our penultimate haunted house, bugs: eaten alive. i find bugs genuinely gross & creepy irl, while i oftentimes find giant & monstrous bugs super hot, so i knew one way or another this house would probably be quite a bit of fun and i’d probably feel some kinda way about it. it ended up being weighed more heavily towards the latter, especially with the last few stretches of the haunted house taking place in this absolutely awesome set with this huge honeycomb and some badass web effects.
last but very much not least was hellblock horror, which as its name implies is a house whose concept is that a bunch of monsters are locked up in cages and, rude oversight!, i’m not locked up with them??? okay this is a rather silly & dumb quibble, but i would’ve liked a lot more restraint imagery given the theme of this one!! but oh well. on a positive note, one of the last rooms is dominated by a single huge cage with a swamp yeti inside of it and despite there being plenty of other people in the room the monster made sustained eye contact with me while i cowered cutely, so yeah i think i won halloween horror nights?
seriously, though, i had a blast as always. well, to the extent that a sample size of three can be described with words like “always.” i’m so profoundly glad this has become a tradition for my partner & i, and i’m already excited for the next time we go!

Soulsborne asks: 8, 9, 16, 23?
this became rambly so under read more it goes
8. Do you have any fond coop memories? Does a specific moment stand out to you?
yeah you know from high-level dungeons in bb come all kinds of things. so on my platinum character ive also farmed all kinds of gems and shit, and 99% of coop i do happens in the chalice dungeons with people just as insanely overleveled as me.
...that's until hunters of hunters roll in and you realise that whoever invaded your ass is probably just as high a level as you or more (which is around 300) and you're just. well that'll be a fun fight huh.
i have a vivid memory of a crow wannabe showing up and pulling out a tonitrus, the Most Okayest Weapon Ever. they chased me around ihyll and died to a fireball trap. fuxking lmao.
another one is from ds3 and it's about a greatbow user who fucking soloed midir, the big bad fuckoff huge dragon for me on my dark character run. i was doing like 20 damage? and then this guy rolls in and puts the fear of god back right into my heart. oh it was amazing.
9. What are your three favourite weapons and why?
im not gonna list all of the games because i can't remember all weapons right now, so:
- the blade of mercy. it's so worth learning how to effectively use. it's fast, it does a respectable amount of damage on a good skill build and it encourages very high mobility and less of R1 mashing.
- the onyx blade. everything about it is immaculate, from the caduceus aesthetic to the black flames, to its speed. i love how light it feels to wield too, as if its barely holding together from everything its original wielder been through.
- morgott's cursed curved greatsword. it's very satisfying to use and to land the skill attack in succession, also i absolutely love curved greatswords in elden ring. the design of the blade and the introduction of it, as the wood falls off it from the sheer force of morgott's grip? hhoh. i want this thing in my house not gonna lie.
- honorable mention of estoc, the weapon i use in every souls game until i find something i like for my specific build. also it fucking carried me through my first ds2 run, what a great weapon.
16. What are your favourite areas?
ds1: new londo and anor londo. all of the headcanons aside, i can't help but wonder what they were like when they were alive. and in their current states they're much like yourself, undead and long hollow, having forgotten what it is to be a home.
ds2: THE GUTTER. lighting up all the sconces is something i look forward to every run. and with the heartbeat... the place is so unsettling and beautiful in the dark, i just spend a lot of time wandering around and looking at the edges of structures peeking out from the dark. the runner up is shulva. i would love to live there before it went to shit.
ds3: i like carthus catacombs, sue me. mainly because invasions in there are very fun (for me). irithyll is okay. the ringed city is more okayer but it takes longer to get there, and the only reason i like two of those is their aesthetics. idk ds3 lore.
bloodborne: ...the hunter's nightmare. the ruined and warped city of yharnam in sickly daylight, drowned in blood and knowing nobody but those who spill it. to be fair i like most of all bloodborne locations with one petty exclusion (fuck you hemwick). i wish the castle cainhurst was bigger on the inside as well as the outside, but i guess i will have to do with the castle sol </3
elden ring: fuck all of you, caelid is beautiful and haunting, a festering and living grave of a land. i like it a moderate amount. i have not spent hours obsessively taking pictures of various plants and creatures there. i am normal about caelid. ...on another note, i think leyndell is the best area fromsoft ever made as a dungeon and aesthetics wise.
23. What is your favourite fashion souls?
oh man im kind of tired of listing every game, so I'll go with top three outfits i have on some of my characters:
- nights cavalry set and nox monk headpiece.
- tomb prospector set and yharnam hunter hat (or maria's hat).
- loyce set.

“Carter... wait.”
Six — Artemis — saw him standing there, silhouetted against the mouth of the tunnel, a shadow against shadows backlit by the setting sun. His head cocked to one side, and as she watched the motion, she again felt that deep sense of foreboding that had haunted her since she woke up that morning. She quashed the feeling, and stepped up to him, noting that like her, his helmet was carried loose in one hand.
When had that happened? We all had our helmets on in that lab.
And why can’t I shake this feeling of finality? No matter how much I push it down, shove it to one side, it comes back. Insistent upon something.
Maybe it was just the urgency of the mission. That was all.
She crowded against him, forcing herself to stop thinking, and pressed her lips to his. His eyes closed, shutting out that beautiful blue, and his free hand reached out to rest upon her armoured hip.
When she finally, reluctantly parted from him, she saw that Carter had opened his eyes again, that there was a question in their depths. “What was that for?” he murmured, a furrow in his brow.
She found herself saying the first thing that came to mind. “Luck.”
It looked like he was about to laugh, then, to brush her off, or to voice some snarky comment in response— but he must have seen something in her face that stopped him. His expression softened, instead, and the hand that rested at her waist found her hand and squeezed reassuringly. “Hey,” he said softly, “We’ll get the job done. We’ll win.”
Artemis tried to ignore the sinking feeling in her gut. “Promise?” It wasn’t fair, to hold him to something like that. But she needed it. She needed something tangible, something to hold onto.
“Yeah. I promise.” He bumped his forehead against hers, turned, and began to walk toward the exit, sliding his helmet on as he did so. She mashed her own helmet into place in time to hear a TEAMCOM channel click open, “NOBLE, let’s get movin’,” and not for the first time wished she could switch herself back on just as easily as he did.
She lingered, then, watched him striding towards Jun and Emile, seeing them, but not really feeling like she was there with them. It felt like a scene from another time, a time that didn’t exist, like she was watching a movie through someone else’s eyes.
You wanna know if we’re losing?
I know we’re losing. I want to know if we’ve lost.
Noble Six forced herself to stir, and strode out to join them.

Current Top 3 songs: 1. seven- Taylor Swift: I've been thinking a lot about child soldiers in YA dystopian novels a lot lately because I'm hyper-fixating on Lockwood & Co. I have the bridge "And I've been meaning to tell you/I think your house is haunted..." constantly stuck in brain.
2. Medley of Rihanna songs from her half-time show performance: The transitions between mash-ups is so good!
3. Work- Rihanna: Makes me all nostalgic-it feels like I'm back in school again when this song first came out. It's catchy enough for me to vibe to while working but still chill enough to fade into the background when I get into a good flow. Only downside is that I have to hear Drake.
I love Taylor, and yeah that line goes fucking hard. I haven't seen Lockwood & Co but I definitely should.
And yeah, Rihanna?? Reminds me of high school, but always always so good. Love on the brain is always gonna be my fav
