We flew from Cairo to Luxor on January 24. The flight took us over the eastern desert between the Nile and the Red Sea (just visible in the background). While it is bleak and barren now, 10,000 years ago the area was lush and green with many complex river systems. All that is left of them now are the river beds, filled with sand.

The rear of Temple A, completely overgrown with a spiky plant with shallow roots known as camel thorn. Controlling encroaching vegetation is a constant challenge in Luxor as the plants and their roots can damage the monuments. Before we can begin any work the grasses and camel thorn have to be removed, which is a challenge. This photograph and those that follow were taken by our foreman, Abdel Aziz Farouk Sharid, whom you will meet next week. 

Halfa grass is a very tough, hardy plant with an extensive root system that can grow through cracks in stone and cause severe damage. Before we can even begin to work, the halfa and camel thorn have to be cleared, which takes about 10 days – it’s a big site! Fortunately, Abdel Aziz got started well before we arrived so that we may begin work on Saturday.

Camel thorn is a real pain to deal with! The spikes are very sharp.

The halfa grass can simply be bundled up and removed. Camel thorn is another matter. It has to be raked carefully onto a sheet of canvas so it can be removed without cutting the workers. We are most grateful to them all for undertaking this annoying and sometimes painful work.

Our first night in Luxor on January 24 we sat on our balcony and watched as the Theban cliffs were illuminated. Day or night, the view across the Nile is spectacular.

Secret Life was great because every perspective on it is so fresh, you can watch just about everybody without even getting bored. Even in the finale, where everybody had the same secret, the plot unfolds like a flower, where you understand more of what actually happened the more you watch.

I just happened to watch Scar's episode first, which was a great place to start obviously because I got the basic story of the finale from beginning to end, and of course it was a wild ride! But there was so much left unknown, so many friends and enemies fallen without knowing what happened to them, so many plots unspooling outside of Scar's POV. In the end we were left with the same question he had: How did the guy with no friends win the game?

Part of the answer, of course, was obvious. Scar was absolutely on fire in Session 9, scoring an astonishing number of permakills and racking up the hearts to offset his recklessness. I'm not sure he quite realized the banger strategy he fell into by rushing in and just soaking damage while bashing his opponent to death, then using the ten hearts to repair the damage over and over again, but boy was it effective!

Beyond Scar himself, though, was a massive plot throughline that was only partially visible from his POV, and that was the loyalty the previous winners had to their teams above themselves. With the exception of Martyn, whose partner was lost two sessions ago, each previous Games winner had their own alliance and eventually their own favored player that they wanted to win.

Scott's loyalty to the Cherry Blossoms made their home into a fortress and Gem into a powerhouse partially fueled by his own life energy. She's a hell of a player on her own merits and tore a wide swath through the server in a brilliant first outing, but without Scott convincing Impulse to give her both their yellow lives, she would not have survived the combined effects of Grian's two ambushes to make her way into the final three. Along the way, the Cherry Blossoms took out both Bdubs and Joel, the two players who were Pearl's and who would otherwise have had her loyalty to the end of the line.

Grian's loyalty to the Roomies alliance was always more questionable than Scott's, because he is who he is, but he came through in the end and sent Cleo out of the portal cave while remaining behind to take on the near-suicidal task of triggering the explosion. And when he was discovered, he attempted to 1v3 the Cherry Blossoms to give his teammate more time to escape. (And it probably would've worked, if the remaining Mounders and Scar had not found Cleo and run her to ground at the same time.) Grian's last stand was perhaps the most pivotal moment in the late game because it changed the whole balance of power on the server. Scar never knew why Scott, Gem and Impulse were so much weaker than they were supposed to be at the end of the game, but we the audience know.

And of course Pearl's loyalty is unquestionable, even if by the end of the game, all the original targets for it were gone. Pearl proved herself a Mounder, bred and buttered (as they said in my neck of the woods.) She was quite wary of letting Scar into the alliance at all, but she is loyal and more interested in helping her team to victory than in taking a second crown for herself. Scott and Gem killed her guys before the end of the line, but she still had Scar, and she was still loyal to the end.

And thus the man with no friends wound up on the other side of a fight he'd already lived through four games ago, fighting an ally who didn't want to win for a victory he wasn't sure he deserved. But there's an important difference that I'm sure we'll be spending the entire rest of the series downtime dissecting: this time the victor _lived._

So this was caused by the absolute brain rot my love for the series has given me, 40% of the text I got it from the transcript of the first episode Overture, and Michael's text was brought by Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light, shoutout to the creator. It's a one time thing as to bring this sort of prologue.

As always, the characters mostly belong to Vivienne Medrano, and it is a fanfiction with no intention of offending anyone.

Prologue

At the beginning, Heaven rose from the light of creation, it´s golden glow soon was to be known though out existence. It was ruled by beings of pure light, Angels that worshiped good and shielded the world from all evil.

Samael was one of the first angels. He was a dreamer with delusional ideas for all of creation, for this, he was seen as a menace. The elders of Heaven were brought to the conclusion that his way of thinking was dangerous to the order of their world.

The straw that broke the camel's back was when its creation, the forbidden fruit was placed in the hands of a mortal woman, this made the high command make the decision to banish Samael from heaven, causing the creation of the demonic place known years later as Hell.

The word 'Hell' was derived from an Anglo-Saxon word hellia, that meant wicked or evil.

Samael’s wife, the first human woman ever created, Lilith, thrived with the decision. After being banished along with her husband, she empowered demon-kind with her voice and her songs. And as the numbers of Hell grew, so did its power.

To say Heaven was threatened by that fact was an understatement, according to the paperwork Adam - the first human man and soul to enter heaven – left, I was able to discover that the overpopulation was being handled through an extermination, a massive genocide is a correct termination. What I found interesting, was that the procedure ruled out hell-born beings, no exceptions, and no precedents of any contract with Samael or any form of power known to rule in hell.

To think Adam’s heart was so big that he decided to condemn only human souls, sparing “innocent” hell-born beings, is moronic. But as soon as I started to leave my obligations unattended to uncover the mystery of the excess of blood in the hands of the high command, my actions were noticed by Michael, the archangel of light.

“Demons... It seems as if I can never catch them all and destroy them, and their numbers continue to expand, corrupting the minds of mortals” he scoffed, picking up his cup of tea, “That’s no reason to go down and take their lives, if you’re so concerned about them corrupting mortals, shut down their access to portals-“ he interrupted me hitting the table hard, breaking the saucer on which he placed the cup, his voice became distorted and his eyes widened around his head, trying to intimidate me.

“They are sinful beasts who rejected our light so we help remove them from it and keep them in the shadows of Hell. We allow them to live, an example of the angel's merciful will, but their population must be... controlled, until they cease being an annoying, persistent thorn in the side of our family” he hissed.

“Our family, was pushed down a hole and since then, no one, not even you, has tried to establish any contact, don’t you think it’s almost an insult that Adam saw Samael before us? Because I do”

“You seem to have a clouded judgement” he adjusted his glasses with a stern movement.

“It’s as clear as ever, I go to earth, I see the souls go either up or dragged down, you’re the one that is clouded because you haven’t witnessed any of their pain”  my blood boiled causing my aura to manifest around me.

“Watch your words” he warned, his eyes flaring in a blue from of flame.

“I can't wait for him to find out, and what will be worse for you, is that everyone will know that you agreed to this from the beginning” I snickered, it was wrong to provoked him, but I felt as if I had the upper hand on him.

I wish someone had warned me of how wrong I was.

“You were the only “no” that day, you were the only one to try to defend his ideas” he thought out loud.

“So?” I asked confused, reaching for the door.

There was a shrill sound, the next thing I knew, I felt a horrible pain in my back, also heat, the air was humid and hot, a smell of blood between fresh and thousands of years old. I don't know how long I was face down in the dirt, I was only able to get up when the pain stopped enough and I was able to move to dry my tears. The dry, arid land under my hands and the sign in front of me confirmed my suspicions.

Son of a bitch had thrown me into Hell.

Probably the best mom in the whole series, well definitely the first arc. My favorite scene in book 5 is when Sunny and Thorn are reunited. It's adorable and it's nice to have a good parent for once. I also really can't figure out how I want SandWings to look. I know big ears for sure. But I can't figure out anything else. I've seen some camel-faced SandWings which are really cool, but I've also seen some with like leopard gecko tails to store water/food. And I've seen some really cool face/horn shapes. I am going to keep reworking them I think. Also, going to keep reworking my Sunny design because she's the dod I draw the least. I know I want a color point Sunny but not exactly how to do that.

Hello! I recently moved to Chicago for a job. As a local, do you have any recommendations for which museums and/or attractions to check out, and which to skip or leave for later? I’ve only been to the art institute so far, but I had a really nice time! Also, your resume tips helped me out a lot, so thanks for that!

Sorry for the delay in reply to this! I definitely wanted to respond sooner but some answers take longer than others :D

I did a bit of a writeup here recently so that's some starter reading, but let me just do a quick rundown of the big museums...

Art Institute -- you've already been so you know it's world-class! Make sure that when you're in the modern wing (as you enter) you look left, there's a whole bunch of galleries to the left that often go unexplored. Also in the original wing, at the main staircase, make sure you go downstairs to explore, the Thorne rooms are down there and so is the paperweight collection if they ever open it again.

Museum of Science and Industry -- always a great time, still has lots of weird old exhibits, but it's also easy to get lost in, so don't plan to see everything your first time out. This is especially fun to take visiting guests to. Don't miss the daily chick-hatching!

Field Museum -- even older and weirder than the MSI, but you can get a little trapped in exhibits (sometimes the only way in or out is to walk a long ways) so conserve your energy. The new Sue exhibit is kind of tucked back on an upper floor but DO NOT miss it, the light show is super fun.

Chicago History Museum -- you know I still haven't been? They have a great cafeteria, I've eaten there :) I'm given to understand it's a really fun museum.

Shedd Aquarium -- I like the Shedd but eh, it's an aquarium. The tickets on the website are pricey but if you buy in person there's a "just the fishes" option for like $8, problem is you usually have to stand in line for a while to get it.

Adler Planetarium -- it's fun, but unless you're a nut for outer space, the highlight is the planetarium show; I'd save this one for a rainy weekend when you just want to wander somewhere.

I truly love the dumb little Money Museum at the Fed, but I think it's still closed. If it isn't, it's a great way to spend an afternoon, lots of fun money to look at, but you will need legal ID and you have to go through a metal detector on your way in, so be prepared for that.

The Garfield Park Conservatory is a fantastic botanical garden; go in summer so you can enjoy the large outdoors space. If you go in the morning, they sometimes let you help feed the koi fish in the indoor ponds.

Lincoln Park Zoo is a lovely mainly-outdoor zoo, and has a lot of events, even in the colder months (zoolights, for example, and they have a summer 5K where I personally almost died from running but refused to let the camels witness that).

As you settle into the city you'll become more aware of what there is to see and do; you pick up a kind of rhythm of the place, so I do think just getting out and looking around the city is a good way to find fun activities. Chinatown (red line Chinatown stop) is fun to shop and eat in, and a great way to learn about the parks is to attend some movies in the parks this summer.

You know, because it's hard to give a massive amount of character in one post, I'm gonna list stuff about alternate rusted knights here

Repentant Thief: Emerald Sustrai, desperate for company used her semblance to hallucinate her friends/allies. Over time as her memory of them began failing, the illusions became flatter, more generic in their kindness and support, and at some points she truly believes that's what RWBY and Co. were like, while at others she can't stand the sight of them, the inaccuracies making her sick to her stomach.

She waits for her Heroes. The ones that saved her before.

She wears leather armor with a Leather helm that covers the lower portion of her face, with a large cloak and hood over all of it. her pants are very similar to previoupairs, simply plainer and sturdier. She has traded heels in for full hiking boots.

Fathomless Angler: Clover Ebi, now an old man, has grown tired, very, very tired. So tired he no longer cares to find a way out, and lets time slip by - He never read The Girl that fell Through the World, his knowledge of it's tale being minimal. He figures this is some twisted afterlife, that he'd done wrong fighting Qrow and has to let himself be punished for fighting his friend.

He Waits, as catching a fish is mostly waiting for it to take the bait. He's still trying to figure out his fish.

Clover wears a faded, dusty Atlesian coat, meant to have water and snow slide right off, with a large scarf and slick bucket hat. due to lack of care, his beard has grown long and scraggly, a veritable bush of salt and pepper. He wears Waders in place of his old Military boots.

The Cobalt Knight (Oxidized Cobalt): Alyx, upon deciding to amend her mistakes in the Ever After was assaulted by The Curious Cat. Jaune Arc, the Rusted Knight, still sick from the poison rushed to her aid. In the end, Alyx was saved, and the cat slinked away to lick it's wounds.

Jaune's didn't make it, and was swallowed by the tree.

Alyx, unable to heal him, to fix this mistake took up his weapons and trained. She was smart - out maneuvering and outsmarting the cat for years until she was able to fight it directly. Then they stayed apart, the Cat not wanting to risk themself, and Alyx not wanting to her own life in revenge.

Alyx waits for the same reasons Jaune did - Guilt, anger, self-loathing, and a need to help RWBY, with all the same weapons he fought with; Mind, Sword, and Shield.

She wears armor like Jaune's only simpler, and lighter, and in FAR better condition - only a little dirty and scuffed.

The Frosted Empress (Lonely): Weiss Schnee, Knowing all she had to do was wait, did just that. She waited. and Waited. And waited. She did her best to stay stable, she practiced arts, she kept up her training, she began to speak to herself in off moments, she never got along with people too much liker herself so Alyx was a handful to deal with.

She oscillates between a very sweet, matronly figure, and an Icy, bitchy Vol-1-esque personality, with moments of lucidity being not too uncommon.

This Weiss wears very simply constructed outfits - basic chain mail and dresses, with immense ornamentation, and a veil, like one would wear at a funeral. She has many different trinkets - leaves, feathers, jewelry and what not.

The Wilted Rose: Ruby Rose fell into the Ever After, and Suffered. She fought as much as she always had, but with no support, no clear goal and the weight of her failings crushing her, Alyx and Lewis were the Straws that broke the Camel's back.

She Ascended into the one person she knew could do anything.

Summer rose.

As motherly and sweet as ever, this rose has thorns only for The Curious Cat - even if she can't remember why.

She looks like an older Summer. With like, very graying hair. It's just Summer Rose.

About Thorn being so mad at the scavengers for hurting her jungle that she lost it and attacked them. About how Sonic got so mad at Eggman insulting Tails that he was shaking, how that was the straw that broke the camel's back and drove Sonic to attack Eggman and fall for his trap. About how he caused the blackout in episode 1 after he saw what happened to Rusty and Nine being electrocuted, about how that was the moment Nine and the council discovered he had the same energy as the prism, about how Sonic stopped listening to Shadow the moment he told Sonic Nine wasn't trust worthy.

About how Sonic went ahead on his own despite Amy just saying they should stick together. About how he rolled his eyes at Tails warnings, about how he got himself and Nine captured after he warned Sonic to keep a low profile. About how Dread ignored his first crew's warnings about the rocks, about that time he submerged the Kraken before the crew could go inside. About how their recklessness continuously puts the people around them in danger.

About how Sonic and Nine kept talking over each other instead of listening to what the other one said they wanted, about how Sonic assumed Nine would go to Green Hill with him despite Nine telling him that he wanted to live in the Grim, about Nine thinking Sonic would go to the Grim despite him rejecting it before. About how they each assumed the other one had changed their mind about their goals.

(Disclaimer: I'm not saying that Sonic is nearly as bad Thorn or Dread, like with the traits they represent for Sonic's friends this are exaggerated, plus this characters have their own defects aside from Sonic's, for example Sonic puts his friends in danger cause he doesn't think about the consequences of his actions and/or because he believes that he and his friends will always come out on top no matter what, meanwhile Dread, as Captain Jack so wisely puts it, does not care. He will get his treasure, no matter the risks he has to take. Also i don't think they are made partly from Sonic's flaws in-universe, more like there are parallels).

He got betrayed by tango and then he just spleefed tango like that. He was such a good hunter of Skizz; especially that underwater bow shot. Giving skizz worse than death. Trader Scar’s one last trade. Ugly stepson LOL. Bigb’s back rooms really creeping people out as intended. That pearl and kill on etho was beautiful. HE KILLED ETHO YET AGAIN LOL. HE HAS OVER 40 HEARTS!! Him getting impulse was CLEVER!!! Scar is so on fire this series and this episode. That pvp with gem was pretty good! They traded roughly equally but he has better hearts and armor and Pearl lol. HE DIDNT KNOW HE WON BECAUSE HE DIDNT GET THE HEARTS OR THE KILL MESSAGE AGAHAHA. CLASSIC. and he hit the succeed button!! What an ending.

Sandwings use makeup, like eyeliner, lip liner and eyeshadow. They are usually very bright and colorful

Sandwings have dyes, where they dye their frills, wings, ears and talons

they have large ears like fennec foxes (so cute)

They are the smallest pyrrhian tribe

On rare cases some Sandwings have rattlesnake rattles at the end of their tails, these Sandwings have venom that must be transferred from a bite

HEADACHE: - Headache is a means of forgiveness and reward.

Abu Said al-Khudri (Radiy'Allahu'anhu) that the Prophet (Sallahu'alayhi'wa'salam) said:

“The headache that afflicts the believer, or a thorn that pricks him/her, or anything that harms him/her, Allah will raise him/her a degree on the day of resurrection and expiate his/her sins due to it” [Saheeh Targheeb no. 3434]

Also, not having headaches is a bad sign because the people destined to go to the Hell-fire do not have headaches:

Abu Hurairah (Radiy'Allahu'anhu) said: The Prophet (Sallahu'alayhi'wa'salam) said:

“…Have you ever felt a headache? The man said: What is a headache? He (Sallau'alayhi'wa'salam) said: A vein that beats in the head of a person. The man said: No I have not experienced that ever! The Prophet (Sallahu'alahyhi'wa'salam) said: Whoever would like to see a man from the people of the Hell-fire, then look at this man!”

Having headaches are a sign of the People of Imaan and the People of Jannah.

Hafidh Ibn Rajab (Rahimahullah) said:

“…And headaches are from the signs of the People of Imaan and the People of Jannah..” [Lataaif al-Maa’rif pg. 153]

Then he brings the above Hadith and others.

On the authority of Abu Zayyaat al-Qushairi (Rahimahullah) said: “We entered upon Abu Darda (Radiy'Allahu'anhu) to visit him, when a Bedouin entered upon him. So he said: Where is your Ameer? And Abu Darda was the ameer then. So we said: He is complaining of some pain. The man said: I have not complained of anything or he said: I did not experience a headache ever! Abu Darda (Radiy'Allahu'anhu said: Remove him from me, so he dies from his sins. I do not love that for every pain/sickness that I feel that I am given red camels. For verily, the pain/illness of a believer is an expiation for his sins”

Wings of Fire Dragon Guide, Part One: MudWings and SandWings

This is the MudWing, or mud dragon. They have brown, amber, and/or gold scales, can breathe fire if warm enough, and if born from a blood reg egg, are immune to burns/burns heal fast, have a flat nose on the top of their snout, and can hold their breath for up to an hour.. They live in groups of siblings mostly, and the oldest or first hatched us called the big wings, who will become their leader. MudWings live in the swampy Mud Kingdom, which has prey such as crocodilians, snakes, pigs, cows, chickens, etc. . They will eat almost anything, and are very loyal to their siblings. They can have names such as:

Bodies of Mud/Water: Swamp, Marsh, Bog...

Swamp Plants: Reed, Cattail, Sawgrass

Wetland animals: Copperhead, Egret, Crocodile...

Shades of brown: Taupe, Olive, Sepia...

This is the SandWing, or sand dragon. They are pale gold, off-white, or tan, and live in the desert Kingdom of Sand. They can breathe fire and have a venomous barb, like a scorpion's, at the end of their tail, radiate heat from their scales,, and have forked black tongues. They eat lightly, preferring lizards or camel, and have eaten kebabs and camel milk. Have had animus dragons in the past (animus dragons are rare dragons born with magic that can do almost anything, but can't bring back the dead. Further limitations unknown). They can have names such as:

Desert animals: Scorpion, Vulture, Rattlesnake, Camel...

Desert winds: Sandstorm, Qibli, Sirocco...

Heat: Arid, Blister, Burn, Blaze, Char, Smolder...

Desert plants: Agave, Palm...

Sharp plants: Thorn, Prickle...
