i love books with traumatized character who don’t suddenly “get better” by the end, the ones who still suffer despite the story being over and needing to continue living their life with the trauma they hold
bc a happy ending doesn’t mean that you are suddenly healed of all your trauma and history

Monthly post with some of Austins best sounds. ABVA members feel free to message me with more suggestions.
I strongly suggest you listen to Carve The Mark which he co-narrated in 2017. Austin also narrated in the follow up The Fates Divide. Those books were written by Veronica Roth who also wrote the Divergent series.
You'll get a lot of Austins voice (pre Elvis) that to me feels extremely soothing.
See pinned post on my blog if you wanna join ABVA.

Very unpopular opinion: Carve the mark is better than Divergent.

“Wow, you weren’t kidding,” the brother said. “Cyra fucking Noavek is with you.”
“How did you know my middle name?” I said.

The way it takes me forever to get through one of those Veronica Roth audiobooks because when it comes around to a chapter Austin reads, I’m out like a light in about 3 minutes. 😂
@slowsweetlove I know you relate to this 😏

Haaaaaaaappy STS!
Which works (books, shows, movies, games, etc.) are the biggest influences on your current WIP, and do those influences shine through or are they more subtle?
Hey, Gem! Thanks for the ask, love!
Only because it's the easiest to think of, I'm gonna talk about The Animatronic Saga:
The biggest influence-- media-wise-- is The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. I was reading the series for the first time around when I started writing my series, so it was bound to seep in. The dead giveaway is the cyborg/automaton appearance.
I really liked how Meyer set up how her world reacted to cyborgs, too. It was a definite jumping off point for setting up my own world.
Eventually, I started reading darker stories, whether in content or ending. Those really helped me shape my major rewrite into the story that I love today. (Think: Red Queen, Carve The Mark, The Young Elites, The Cruel Prince, etc.) Those influences are infinitely more subtle; the biggest shine through is probably the introduction of grey morality.

" We've got to regroup and figure out what's happening in Voa", said Teka.
" I have a guess," Akos said, crossing his arms. " Chaos."
"And then more chaos," Teka said with a sage nod. " With a short break in between. For chaos, ofcourse."

to be honest the carve the mark duology by veronica roth is SUCH a whump masterpiece. i always wondered why i loved that series sm besides the a little above average storytelling but great worldbuilding and now it makes sense (spoiler; it has whump.) but mind you it may be triggering for anyone who struggles/struggled with self-harm due to the fact that a common practice in the book is to carve a mark on the arm once a kill is performed.
although it does have some very valid criticisms surrounding it and issues of POC, if you're solely looking for a whumpy literary ride, i recommend this.
the female lead is a represent of chronic pain, living with a gift that causes her constant distress;
and the male lead goes thru a series of whump events, both physical & emotional. applies for the female lead too. for example.
spoilers ahead;
- is kidnapped by people from another planet, watches his father die in front of his own eyes
- gets beaten to shit a multitude of times (probably)
- has to watch his brother be stripped of identity slowly
so on.
don't wanna spoil too much so i'll stop here. a lot of people don't like the book due to the seemingly slow-paced storyline. but i liked it when i read it, and to be honest it's still one of my favorites.

stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go listen to the Carve the Mark audiobook and let Austin literally bless your ears with his narration for 15 hours

Carve the Mark audio book
I don't know if anyone else has found this recording of Austin doing an audio book called Carve the Mark. His voice is absolutely amazing and to all of those who say his voice has changed since Elvis, I believe this shows it hasn't. His voice may be a little deeper now, but not much. It is a beautiful thing!
